Its good to be Tim Tebow. Barcelona are out of the Copa del Rey. Tate Martell is considering a transfer. The (dreaded) Penguins are surging. And Andy Murray is going to retire after Wimbledon (if he can play that much longer). Which reminds me that the Australian Open is kicking off this weekend. I’d give my right arm if Venus Williams had one more slam in her, but I fear its gonna be the Serena show for a while again.
Today was the day Alexander Hamilton was born on. He shares it with: Canada’s first PM, John Macdonald, father of American psychology William James, suffragist Alice Paul, South African writer Alan Paton, auto racer and legendary car designer Carroll Shelby, actor Rod Taylor, rocker Tony Kaye, golf great Ben Crenshaw, singer Mary J Blige, and jazzman Lee Ritenour.
It was also the day the following took place: the first life insurance company in America incorporated, Samuel Morse gave the first public demonstration of the telegraph, Romania annexed Transylvania, the first use of insulin to treat diabeetus was given, Bangladesh became independent, the Pretenders released their debut album, Ric Flair won the WCW/NWA Championship, and Trump called several countries “shitholes” a year ago today.
Alright, now on to…the links!
Man, I always hate it when “unwanted house visitors” show up places. Although that’s not the term I would typically use for an armed intruder. But New York media gonna New York media.
Ok, this personal life shit is getting ridiculous. What’s next, Kamala Harris taking a dump and filling us in on global warming?
Well, this story is weird as shit. And by “weird as shit”, I mean its really weird as shit. I’m laying odds on a confession and claims of abuse in 48-72 hours.
Speaking of the aforementioned Kamala Harris, she seems pretty happy to admit she doesn’t pay much attention to current events. Especially, you know, when she’s in a position to effect them a great deal.
Gee, I have no idea how the Chicago government could be broke. I mean, having nearly 15,000 employees make over $100,000 a year seems perfectly reasonable, right? (Protip for Chicagoans: do not start randomly clicking names in the chart and looking at what municipal workers make. You will reflexively break something.)
I’m providing the link to this one without any commentary at all, Other than to ask your opinions of the litigation and the motives of those involved in the process.
Not sure what kind of childhood the writer of this piece had, but her definition of “teddy bear” and mine are wildly different. Cool stuff, though.
Here you go. And I got shit for not picking this once before. And I’m sure everyone knew this one was coming.
Have a great day and a better weekend, friends!
Ok, this personal life shit is getting ridiculous.
But look how folksy and down to earth Democrats are. See, they go run errands just like you and me, and still somehow find time to take on the crazy business of governing this unruly country.
Beta makes Obama look like a qualified professional with a life’s worth of experience by comparison. He’s a new low in empty suits.
Wait till the left finds out his wife is a billionaire real estate heiress who runs a charter school. They’ll turn on him faster than you can say “Irish-American”.
“Wait till the left finds out his wife is a billionaire real estate heiress who runs a charter school.”
Nah. That got aired here in Tejas during the Senate run. And he still came close to winning. People who voted for him didn’t care, because he was running against Evil Incarnate TM.
Like they did with John Kerry?
They’re perfectly fine with billionaires but she runs a charter school?! That’s problematic to be sure.
Oh, I love the “Beta” spin. For most English speakers it’s the opposite of Alpha. For Spanish speakers it’s (well, could be) the feminine version of Beto.
Maybe they watched Invader Zim and are just trying to show us how human they are.
Look at me! I’m filled with human organs!
He’ll be live-streaming the grad school class he’s taking at UTEP next.
There are roles even Buscemi would turn down.
Yeah: “guy in dentist’s office” is at the top of the list.
This guy made it work.
Tucker said something about him getting Bobby Kennedy implants
Ted Kennedy implants work as a flotation device.
Its good to be Tim Tebow.
I don’t know, I like my life of not performing circumcisions.
Today was the day Alexander Hamilton was born on
If only he dueled more often.
Once was enough for him.
He was just dying to give it a shot!
Racist!
I am going to link today’s daily mail Demi Rose pic before someone else does
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-6580721/Demi-Rose-showcases-famous-curves-eye-popping-bikini-enjoys-boozy-lunch.html
Who the fuck is Demi Rose?
No idea
Ten pounds of plastic/silicon in a five pound sack?
Some fat-ass.
Some thott with a weird butt. I think there’s a fund or something to help her and people like her so they can buy things to prop their cheeks up or something like that.
Nah, that’s not weird, that’s a pretty standard bubble butt for someone thicc like that.
Some thicc chicc who, on a slow day, might make my top three on Q’s daily lists of sexy women.
She lives about 4 blocks from my house.
well? did you hit that?
With a handle like blackjack he never hits anything over 16

I was thinking of this myself

Is that RealDoll famous anywhere besides the Daily Fail?
no idea
Trump called several countries “shitholes” a year ago today.
A day that will live in
infamyhilarity.I still haven’t seen proof he was wrong.
There’s not even proof he actually did.
Good point.
There’s not even proof he actually would be wrong if he did.
HE OPENED HIS MOUTH!

This would’ve been so much more fun if McAfee were president.
Everything would have been so much more fun if McAfee were president…
Mixology classes livestreamed from The White House every morning while he’s wearing sunglasses. I’d almost be happy to pay taxes for that.
Those mixology things seemed rudimentary to me
Did you pay attention to the drinks, the shades, the bathrobes, or the security guards and their automatic weapons? If those are rudimentary mixology classes, I wonder what the wild ones are.
there was no liquid nitrogen. And the measurements did not seem precise
It’s art, not science.
Speaking of rudimentary…
LOL!
Remember when SHEP SMITH* said on air, off the cuff, “politics is weird…and creepy”? A Bernie Bro friend who constantly posts about politics called Pelosi a “gmilf”.
*Accidental capitalization, but why not.
Weird and Creepy
Your friend needs to put down the bong.
We had a dearly departed member who thought Kathleen Sebelius was a GILF. Oi vey!
Is your friend German?
Nah. His surname, Hughes, isn’t even German. I think he doesn’t see very well. Never takes off his glasses. His wife is very large.
The correct spelling is “gilf”. Unless you mean “General Manager I’d like to fuck.”
Pretty sure Gmilf was a Tolkien dwarf.
Pelosi a “gmilf”.
I think the term is Gilf. And gross.
Unless he’s claiming it because he wants to break her hip, I’d keep a little distance between him and you.
SHEP SMITH NO STEVE SMITH. SHEP WEIRD AND CREEPY. SHEP SOUND LIKE SHEEP.
I’m glad the people who answered their door are taking credit for finding her and providing 50 pictures of themselves for the story…
Actually. They didn’t even answer per the story. I bet they saw the lady and kid and didn’t want anything to do with them. The person who actually found the kid just opened their door after they didn’t answer and told them to call 911.
My dad lives about 20 minutes from her home, and I deer hunt about 10 minutes from where she was found. It’s been a pretty big deal in the area, obviously. I have no idea what happened, so I won’t comment on that, but I did find it interesting that in their statements the cops took credit for finding her. In fact, they even said they fulfilled their promise to the family to find her. Uh, no you didn’t. All the fancy police work and likely hundreds of thousands of dollars (multiple agencies at all three levels) and several weeks of investigation didn’t get it done. The articles mentioned there was essentially no forensic evidence found and the killer only stepped 5 feet into the house (how they know without evidence, I’m not sure) and was there less than 4 minutes. They had nothing. Even after hundreds of people combed the area for any sign. It still came down to the girl getting away somehow.
I was going to post those exact observations. Even their initial statement took credit for finding her. I suppose it is just a mindset.
Yeah, she found herself. Someone was good enough to help her get to the police and humble enough not to take credit for an act of decency that really would be inexcusable to avoid.
I remember when the story first broke thinking that it would be best if the girl was killed quickly, because the likely alternative was that she would be killed slowly. I’m glad that she was able to make it out alive and get help! Hopefully somebody like Elizabeth Smart can get close to her and show her that there is a path forward in life even though all that horror happened.
Some brief notes from the press conference today:
Suspect is a 21 year old with no criminal record, and was not on their radar. He is from Gordon, WI (town where she was found.) He was apprehended almost immediately after the 911 call yesterday, as the girl gave the suspect’s name plus a description of a car he was driving. Mugshot was distributed at press conference.
Two county Sheriffs, state AG, FBI agent in charge, County DA, school superintendent all spoke thanking the hard work of law enforcement but also giving a lot of credit to the community, saying their efforts in publicizing the abduction and not giving up kept the case fresh, probably helped the 3 strangers who helped the girl to safety after her escape.
Speakers gave a lot of credit to the girl for her bravery in escaping, and finding help so quickly. They expect her to be back in town this afternoon (still under evaluation/observation at Duluth/Superior area hospital.)
personally, I say no to Yes.
Within the ever-expansive taxidermy community, Kady Rose, a biology student at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, is what they call a “rogue taxidermist,” one in a growing contingent of artistic and subversive taxidermists who want to move beyond the traditional form of taxidermy — petrified animals mounted like trophies to a wall.
Instead, Rose’s animals are soft and arrangeable, like teddy bears. Most of them are sourced from people in her network of animal lovers around the U.S. — grieving pet owners who don’t want to say goodbye to their animals, veterinarians, petting-zoo employees, and the intrepid roadkill pundits in other states where it’s legal.
Intrepid Roadkill Pundits is a great band name, and it also seems like a good nickname for the Glibertariat.
Also, despite the werid, would.
Well, you’d be soft and poseable for your next of kin.
[golf clap]
I want my very own Rocket Raccoon!
Escape Velocity Trash Pandas
I have a buddy who does does taxidermy on the side and is pretty good at it.
I have been trying to talk him in to doing a bald eagle for me, but he says there is no market for the stuff he needs to buy to do it.
Seems like there is a market there not being served.
If he’s not a member of a tribe using so much as a bald eagle feather, he’s gonna end up in federal prison. That’s a big no-no.
I know sloop. That’s the point.
Too much ink.
That’s why Tebow washed out of the NFL like his cardboard sheets in an industrial laundry. 31 years of blue-balls and nocturnal emissions must play havoc with a man’s psyche but the pay-off seems fair enough. God Speed, Tim.
I really hope the gay rumors aren’t true. It would be such a waste.
He could still have kids even if gay.
And we’ve already got enough closeted, self-loathing homos.
Tebow should be Trump’s running mate in 2020.
Slogan: All we do is win!
I disagree. Tim didn’t have to remain pure to land this chick, and the prime time action available to him from the time he became aware of women until present would make the Sultan of Brunei jealous. All he did was miss out.
Miss Universe. That’s the long game! I couldn’t do it, I’d be like Kramer when I was twelve, “I’m Out!”
Samsung Unveils Massive 219 Inch TV Called ‘The Wall’

We have fish tanks. The only people that will ever buy this are paying someone to move it.
We don’t need no .. . education… We don’t need no thought control.

Do we need to call the firemen on you?
Dammit!
+1 Ray Bradbury
Looks like you need to adjust your timey-wimey stuff.
I was busy with my sonic screwdriver.
Now that’s a euphemism.
Projector costs have come down a ton lately for higher lumen units. Why is this necessary?
Why is anything necessary?
No one needs 2 types of TV?
How many inches does one person need?
More’n 8 and you’re reduced to not going all the way in. Unless you prone bone a woman with a phat ass.
I meant why is the development of this necessary, not whether people buy them or not. I just think they’re overdeveloping antiquated technology here, not making a statement directed at consumers.
I don’t think it’s directed at consumers. Maybe some sports bars might buy one, but I think Samsung is showing off they can build one big screen, rather than putting a bunch of smaller screens together. Which is what is currently done in stadiums and such.
The only reason I can imagine would be energy efficiency
Home theater projectors still tend to have an incandescent bulb.
Mini projectors use leds, but I’m not so sure they are bright enough to fulfill the home theater role.
I don’t know about newer models, but my projector has awful contrast. I’d never buy this TV, but if the contrast ratio of projectors is still shitty, I can see how some people would prefer this monstrosity
*Triggered*
Police say a New Jersey man fought off an unwanted house visitor by using the suspect’s own gun — ultimately killing him.
Police responded to a report of shots fire at a Bound Brook home around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The intruder allegedly arrived at the residence brandishing a semi-automatic handgun and a fight erupted with the man who lives at the home.
1) Pretty bad-ass
2) I wonder why they mention that…
I still can’t get past the story referring to him as an “unwanted house visitor” rather than “armed intruder”.
That’s a John-level hilarious understatement. “And TWA flight 800 isn’t going to be on time for arrival.”*
*I think I screwed that up somehow.
I loved that meme back at ToS.
Shoo them off with your lead projector.
It is a super-weird turn of phrase.
Later in the article they say that police report that the homeowner knew the other guy… so maybe that is why the “unwanted visitor” bizarreness is there. They seem to be trying to figure out if it was actually a home invasion or some sort of personal beef.
Are we gonna call rapist “unwanted vagina visitors” now too? If progtards get to redefine all language, we should force them to redefine it for rape as well. At a minimum it will kill the idiotic #metoo movement.
“Undocumented boyfriends”. And home invaders are “undocumented house guests”.
If they can say “unwanted house visitors” I suppose STEVE SMITH can say “unfavorable anatomical imposition”.
Yeah that was weird. That’s what we called the monthly visitor when we were trying to have a kid.
You mean, “Aunt Flo,” right?
Never trust a human that bleeds for 5 days out of every month and doesn’t die….

Probably a South American Undocumented visitor and they didn’t want to offend anyone with the “I” word.
Furloughed EPA Worker Says She’s Considering Selling Family Heirlooms Amid Shutdown
I wonder how many family heirlooms have been sold over the years to keep the IRS from destroying lives.
Or how many beloved family properties were rendered unusable for economic activity because of the EPA. Etc.
Hard applause..
Poor government workers are all living paycheck to paycheck. They need a massive raise soon.
They need to move to Chicago and work for the city.
OH.. well, boo..
and then…. hoo.
Wait, it’s only been going on about 2 weeks, have they even missed a paycheck yet?
From what I remember reading, Tuesday is the first missed paycheck.
Today would be their first missed paycheck…
Haven’t missed a paycheck or an interview opportunity, apparently.
As I said before, I have some sympathy for the poor schmuck at the Coast Guard who makes minimum wage. But when NPR broadcasts a sob story about the DC millenial who’s concerned that his two year old isn’t getting the social interaction that keeps her happy because her daycare is closed and he can’t take her to the Smithsonian either, I can only feel antipathy.
It’s as if there are no playgrounds, neighborhood playgroups, library story times, etc. She has the time. She has a phone. She is cynically using her child as a political prop.
That shit is for the riff-raff that is expected to also pick up the tab you loser!
/progtard
They can’t get social interaction with all the other furloughed workers?
Boo fucking hoo.
Do like everyone else on the world does when their employer quits paying them.
Find a new job.
That’s a light sentence for aiding and abetting.
There’s two options:
(1) She’s lying.
(2) She is such a shit money manager that she has zero savings, has maxed out every credit card, and can’t qualify for another one.
Why my tears are supposed to be jerked by these tales o’ woe, I have no clue. My response is somewhere between pointing and laughing, and sneering contemptuously.
Sure, sure, I’m a bad person, I do bad things. Whatever.
We were fortunate enough to have a little bit in savings, but once we bought the house, we pretty much drained that,
This may sound heartless but I have little sympathy. Two people on a federal salary and knowledge that, politics being what it is, we have periodic government “shutdowns” should plan in advance and live within their means. That, in part, means not draining your savings on a brand new house that I’d wager would have stretched you too thin regardless.
It’s common sense that you’re not supposed to blow your e-fund when you buy a house. You never know what is going to break after the house has been sitting unoccupied for X months.
Yup. Basic life skills 101 is to always have enough to cover 6 months expenses on hand. By the time you’ve been on your own for a couple of years that should be true, and remain so for the rest of your days, barring a major incident.

It’s all so obviously manufactured and disingenuous.
eat this crap up
They do. I think people from all persuasions are susceptible to the cult of personality, but leftists are slaves to it. Prime example, Barack Obama. He was/is a total pos, especially if you actually listen to what he says. How he says it is nice sounding, but often what he says is everything from asinine/stupid to disingenuous to insulting. But people swoon nonetheless and act like he is just like them, except worthy of worship.
The more I become acquainted with Scaramucci , the more I want to party with him.

Samoan white supremacists?
Why not? Jason Momoa just got me tooed for something pretty innocuous.
They are going to demand he kow-tow or they will destroy him for this now…
He’s *The Rock*. I’m pretty sure he’s beyond giving a crap what people think at this point. He’s good at playing the game and being what he needs to be, but if push really comes to shove, he really, really doesn’t need them. He’s got more money than he can spend and seems to be a really, genuinely nice guy. There’s no way he doesn’t have a ton of real friends who are truly loyal.
They can’t touch him.
Plus, he’s gay. That shorts out the intersectional wiring in their dysfunctional heads.
Wut?
He’s got 3 kids with two different women. (1st wife & longtime girlfriend)
Mind you, that doesn’t mean he’s not gay, but that’s some dedication to keeping a beard otherwise.
Maybe bi, then. I don’t follow entertainment gossip, but I swear I thought he came out as gay.
*googles*
Nope, guess not. Never mind.
In Canada, it’s now a Brave New World.
It may sound unbelievable, but Canada’s revised laws on impaired driving could see police demand breath samples from people in bars, restaurants, or even at home. And if you say no, you could be arrested, face a criminal record, ordered to pay a fine, and subjected to a driving suspension.
You could be in violation of the impaired driving laws even two hours after you’ve been driving. Now, the onus is on drivers to prove they weren’t impaired when they were on the road.
…
Changes to Section 253 of the Criminal Code of Canada took effect in December giving police greater powers to seek breath samples from drivers who might be driving while impaired.
Under the new law, police officers no longer need to have a “reasonable suspicion” the driver had consumed alcohol. Now, an officer can demand a sample from drivers for any reason at any time.
While many Canadians have heard about that part of the new legislation, lawyers said the two-hour provision has gone unreported.
“The public has completely missed this one,” said Joseph Neuberger, a Toronto criminal defence lawyer.
He described a scenario in which someone has gone home and watches a hockey game, enjoys a few beers, and gets a knock on the door from police, who received a tip about someone in the house who was driving a vehicle suspiciously.
“The person answers the door and they say, ‘Sir, we’ve had a complaint about your driving, we need you to provide a sample,” said Neuberger, noting if the person failed to provide the sample it would likely lead to arrest.
The Safety Cult is taking a page from The No-Knock Raid Pimps; reasonable cause? Warrants? We don’t need none of that shit, you plebe.
Welcome to B.C. circa 2010. It’s “possible” that these scenarios arise but I’ve yet to hear of it ever getting to court. Civil rights attorneys would be all over this like stink on shit.
Well that’s part of the point. We shouldn’t be paying these goombas to make laws which are so fucking terrible that they would get thrown out in the first court case, which are really only being made at the behest of the Safety Uber Alles cultists.
I need no convincing on that score. The Gov did away with criminal convictions for impaired driving and turned it into regulatory violations to free up court space. Instead of having your day in court they just fine you and user fee you to the point wherein you want to just curl up in a ball and die. Initial fine, towing fee and compound, Installation and monthly fees for an interlock device, re-licencing, mandatory MAAD classes that are not cheap, de-installation of the device, another re-licence and just when you thought it was over, another bill from the Gov-owned insurance company on top of your regular rate because they deem you a “high risk” driver. Oh yeah, don’t fuck up again for five years because we’re watching you. This is all on the say-so of some random cop with who knows what piece of shit breathaylizer writing you a ticket. Dark fucking times are spreading nation-wide.
No wonder the media heaped so much scorn on Dean Clifford, and that the government basically crushed him.
The process is the punishment, Festus.
See above.
onus is on drivers to prove they weren’t impaired when they were on the road.
Something something innocent until proven guilty.
Most traffic laws are like this.
When I lived in Georgia the law only allowed a few conditions for contesting a radar speeding ticket.
Was the officer certified.
Was the equipment calibrated.
Was the officer the specified distance from a curve.
Was the hill less than 39 degrees. (only one such hill on public roads in GA at the time)
That was it.
A video backed up by satellite tracking and ten eyewitnesses would not be enough to get you out of a ticket. All of that is inadmissible. Go to court and you can ask those questions of the officer. That’s it.
I know because I got a ticket from a motorcycle cop who had his back turned to his motorcycle and traffic as a pickup truck passed me (over the yellow lines) in midtown Atlanta. The cop turned around at the beeping and looked up and saw me….. and for some random reason not the pickup in front of me in a long line of traffic. The guy in the pickup was probably DUI too…. since he passed on the double yellow in town in a long line of traffic to only gain one position…. sure, I wasn’t riding the guy’s bumper in front of me, but we were going to stop at the next light in a quarter mile.
Anyway, the judge informed me that those were my only permissible questions. (which I already knew). So I just told her that he made a mistake and left it up to her…. she offered traffic school to get out of the ticket. When I found out how much that would cost in time and cash, I just paid the stupid fine.
STRAUSS: Hitler a General in the Civil War?
This mongoloid forgets that the employee is free to only go to work for a wage he deems acceptable.
Well, he probably doesn’t forget it as much as he wants to ignore it.
If you don’t like marxism or fascism peddled by one party pretending to champion social justice you MUST be a fucking idiot inbred asshat!
Carla Marx can’t even identify the three branches of government and she was just hired to work at one!
Secret Nazi President’s got those soul pledges in hand, and he’s not afraid to use them!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Trump is so evil that the Devil turned over the “Soul Collection” part of business to him.
That notion that he’s got these loyal minions on the court is laughable.
The guy can’t even get his own cabinet members to be loyal minions. His own lawyer isn’t a loyal minion. He couldn’t even get his Attorney General to put some sort of scope limitations on the Mueller investigation.
“An employer should be allowed to pay an employee whatever the employer thinks the employee is worth” is an exact quote of “the Donald.”
I agree but I’d add that compensation is negotiated.
Of course, there are those employers who think that an employee is worth nothing.
Again, compensation is negotiated. No one has a gun to your head.
may soon no longer have our cherished and independent and separate Constitutional three branches of government.
?
With the appointment of Justices Kavanagh and Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court — who, no doubt, had to pledge their souls to Trump to get their jobs
Oh, I see…progjection.
Of course, there are those employers who think that an employee is worth nothing.
This is absolutely true, of course. Employers do sometimes conclude that an employee is worth nothing. That person is soon an ex-employee.
Or, if talking about additional employees, why, employers think nearly everybody in the country is worth nothing, to them. The business is only so big. It only needs so many employees. Every virtual/potential employee beyond what the business actually needs is worth nothing to the business.
is worth nothing to the business.
I’d suggest that they’re not worth nothing, but that they are worth less than they would cost. Theoretically you can get to a marginal value of zero, I guess. However, you could find work for somebody to do if their total cost to the company is a penny a day.
You couldn’t find work for every single adult in the country to do, even at a penny a day.
Sure you could. They only have to produce a few cents of value in a day to be worthwhile. You can probably get that just by having them gather stuff that looked interesting.
I just don’t see it. There are over 6mm people who are officially unemployed, and a hell of a lot more who don’t have jobs who aren’t counted. A penny a day for 6mm people is $60K a day, or $15,600,000 a year. There are many businesses who can’t afford to pay even a single day, and how you monetize “gathering stuff that looks interesting” (and doesn’t already belong to someone else) is a mystery to me.
Etsy? More seriously the logistics would be a serious struggle but I think you are looking at this statically. In other words assuming the business continues doing what it does not just with an extra 100 million or so employees. I am thinking that if you have 800 million man hours a day at a cost of 1 million dollars you could certainly find a way to make money from it. It would certainly not be all within one venture, but your outlay is so low, and that 100 million people includes enough bright ones that you could probably get it to work.
So, sounds like the only thing standing between us and full employment is the minimum wage?
I’ll concede the point.
Have them go out and pick up pennies and pay them a 50% commission on pennies turned in.

Jokes aside, you’re right, there’s a practical limit on the number of people you can hire. However, there’s also a practical limit on how little a person can cost. They do more than a penny’s worth of wear and tear to your facilities by being there each day. Realistically, an employee would have to pay you in order to have a total cost of 1 penny per day.
Point is that they’re not literally zero value, but they’re value X>0 where X is less than some minimum cost required to employ a person.
Realistically, an employee would have to pay you in order to have a total cost of 1 penny per day.
Doesn’t this mean our hypothetical penny-a-day employee may actually have negative value?
Doesn’t this mean our hypothetical penny-a-day employee may actually have negative value?
My understanding is that in an economic context, value, by definition, cannot be negative. It’s a summation of all of the positive contributions to utility. The negative contributions go in the cost bucket.
Broadening out to the main point, the reason I made the clarification was that the author of the original article is doing something very obnoxious. They’re mixing economic concepts (trump’s recital of the basics of pricing) with malleable shorthand like “worth nothing”. We all know what “worth nothing” means outside of the economic context, but the author blends a colloquial definition of worth with a more rigorous economic definition of worth being used by Trump.

But despite reports the 18-year-old was heading to Australia, it appears she may be headed to Canada after the UNHCR withdrew its referral, The Australian reported.
Who needs a burqa when you have to wear a parka?
Give it another 10 years and Australia will be as repressive as where she fled from.
Especially if you work on a minesite somewhere in The Outback. They basically make you wear a yellow vest version of the burqa with a hard hat in 120 degree heat. The health and safety cultists in Oz make the Saudi Religious police look like hippies.

“REVEALED: Majority of the teens who posed in high school prom photo throwing up the Nazi salute have REFUSED to apologize – while many supporters believe THEY are the victims
After a prom photo of more than 60 high school boys throwing up a Nazi salute went viral, a Wisconsin town remains split on whether the teens should be held accountable for their actions or are victims of a social media attack.
The Baraboo High School teens sparked outrage in November after their class prom photo showed them in tuxedos smiling and laughing while raising one arm or giving the white power hand signal.
Meanwhile, photographer Peter Gust who took the photo in May but posted it to his website in November, defended the students by saying the gesture was taken out of context.
‘I said, ”OK boys, you’re going to say goodbye to your parents. So wave”’ Gust said. ‘For society to now turn it around and now blame these kids is absolutely wrong.'”
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6579975/Teens-posed-high-school-prom-photo-throwing-Nazi-salute-REFUSE-apologize.html
People are still saying an “OK” sign means “white power”?
Looks like those kids have learned the lesson a lot of celebrities seem to miss: never apologize.
I’m really impressed they picked up the rules of the “use your civility as a bludgeon against you” game at such a young age, and refuse to play.
You know who else made a lot of salutes…

speaking of the nazi salute, just saw this on Wikipedia:
That’s weird. I didn’t even see this comment before I posted.

“have REFUSED to apologize ”
This is worse than the act itself!!!!
Yes. the famous white power sign invented as a 4chan joke to troll idiot SJWs, which he’s holding on his thigh OH WAIT IT’S THE CIRCLE GAME, IDIOTS.
This is what it looks like from inside the moral panic bubble.
If it helps destroy a budding young Nazi’s life, yes!
Isn’t that a socialist hand signal too?
WTF? Even if it was a Nazi salute, it’s free speech.
Even debating whether it’s a fascist salute or a wave, or an OK sign or a super secret White Power gesture, yields ground to this ludicrous paranoia, I suppose. You’re right: who cares? Even assuming their argument, it’s merely tasteless and ignorant, not insidious. To be honest, the panic over this stuff is more insidious: since blatant Jew-hating fell out of fashion, the new hotness is freaking out over crypto White Supremacy. These people haven’t evolved from fearing the evil hook-nosed Jews (and I don’t think they’re any less anti-semitic, anyway), they just transferred their paranoias onto a different group.

Four B-cups…. FTW!
But what if the 12 inch pizzas are deep dish?
Oh you gotta go all 3D on this! Volume of a cylinder means we’re gonna need some depth in our data.
Yes, but if you are with a crazy person who wants fruit on their pizza, you have topping diversity.

and yet, they have never been in a fruit salad.

As much as eminent domain sucks to the property owner, we couldn’t have the modern world without eminent domain unless we also allowed companies to both collude with one another and deny service for any reason. In the old days an electric company could get a path across someone’s land by just threatening to cut off the electricity to the customer unless they gave in, but nowadays that’s not possible so the only path with a recalcitrant land owner is eminent domain. It’s either that, or certain properties will just not get utilities simply because their neighbors said FYTW. To say nothing of roads, the vast majority of which were built with eminent domain or its cousin re-platting restrictions.
It’s not the only way

I was playing the “mind-game” today at work (because my job is so vacuous) and focused on trying to remember being 16. That’s some chaotic shit right there. Mind-bending how things can change from one week to the next. My Thirties and Forties are mostly just a beige blur. I suppose all that drinkin’ didn’t help.

Snopes covered it in 2017. Real.
Hard to believe. It is way too “on the nose” to be real, but it was a real episode.
Not my headline:
White Sox Sign Shitty Player
The Chicago White Sox did their part to keep the hot stove warm enough that you could put an oven mitt on it, then come back 10 minutes later to find it mildly toasty and perhaps worthy of being ranked as a warmth, by announcing the signing of shitty outfielder Jon Jay today.
Jay, who will be making $4 million on a one-year deal, has hit .272/.340/.351 since 2015, good for an 86 OPS+; per Baseball Reference he’s been good for 2.8 wins above replacement over that time period. He is reportedly also a friend of Manny Machado, a good player the Sox are trying to sign to a free-agent deal; the signing follows up on the Sox’s trade for Machado’s brother-in-law Yonder Alonso, who also sucks ass.
Deadspin has been really angry lately that teams are not making 10 yr $1 Billion dollar contract offers to Machado and Harper. Also seem to be mad that the White Sox are trying to put players on the team that might entice Machado to sign there.
An above replacement level player IS above replacement level. As long as Jay is your 5th outfielder and not starting, he is the exact kind of guy you want as a 5th outfielder. It is better than a replacement level player, which is what you would expect to replace him with from AAA.
Who gives a shit about Deadspin’s spin?
$4m for a 2.8 war player? That’s pretty damn good. Why would someone bitch about it?
Because record revenues also means record income apparently.

LOL!
Who believes for a second that’s real? Sorry, nobody with brains gets in the front seat of an Uber and only someone live-streaming their trip would just happen to accidentally get in that situation.
In the US maybe. I always get in the front seat. Then again in Bucharest I get in the front seat of standard cabs which i assume is not allowed in many countries
I don’t know anywhere it’s not allowed – I just know it’s really weird.
I thought in New York you got in the back and there was something separating the cabbie from you but maybe I misremeber the movies
Yes but it’s allowed and perfectly normal to sit up front IF you can’t fit in the back. Also Ubers and limos (i.e. car services other than official taxis) don’t have those barriers.
I sit in the front seat all the time. No, I don’t want to cram in the back seat of your Hyundai Elantra next to your guitar and yesterdays lunch

Krugman almost gets us right-
But now Donald Trump is, in effect, implementing at least part of the drastic reduction in government’s role his party has long claimed to favor. If the shutdown drags on for months — which seems quite possible — we’ll get a chance to see what America looks like without a number of public programs the right has long insisted we don’t need. Never mind the wall; think of what’s going on as a big, beautiful libertarian experiment.
That said, the truth is that libertarian ideology isn’t a real force within the G.O.P.; it’s more of a cover story for the party’s actual agenda.
But then he totally blows it –
And if you have libertarian leanings yourself, you should ask whether you’re happy with what’s happening with government partially out of the picture. Knowing that the food you’re eating is now more likely than before to be contaminated, does that potential contamination smell to you like freedom?
Knowing that the food you’re eating is now more likely than before to be contaminated, does that potential contamination smell to you like freedom?
I neither ‘know’ this nor believe it to be in any way true.
And if you have libertarian leanings yourself, you should ask whether you’re happy with what’s happening with government partially out of the picture.
Seeing as it has had absolutely zero direct effect on my life, yet has provided me with some amusement, I have to say yes, yes I am happy.
#Metoo.
I have noticed zero difference. Nobody I work with or talk to has even mentioned it. It’s a complete non-issue in my life.
^^^This.
Every now and then I try and think of what the federal government does that I directly benefit from.
I have yet to come up with anything.
The only government body that does anything that directly benefits me is the Franklin county road dept. They drag a road grader across my road 3 or 4 times a year.
That’s all I can think of.
Rage reserves?
They are protecting you from Islamic extremists! Of course they also largely created those extremists and empowered them, but that was then this is now.
Truth be told-
Islamic extremists are way way way more interested in killing other Islamic extremists that they dont agree with than americans.
Americans fucking up their prime directive of doing so has turned their ire on us.
Backlash is a real thing.
Eh, I think it would be more accurate to say they are way more interested in killing non-Muslims, not sufficiently extremist Muslims, and extremist Muslims of a different sect (in that order) that are nearby than going after those that are far away. The Taliban and ISIS didn’t blow up pagan and Buddhist statues and ruins for nothing.
They protect the border and enforce a rational immigration system?
Oh wait…
I just looked up Franklin County, Arkansas, on Wikipedia. (Not stalking you, just interested in where people live.)
“To the north of the Arkansas River, which bisects Franklin County, the county is wet and alcohol is sold in liquor stores, bars and local vineyards. To the south of the Arkansas River, the county is dry. ”
“Initially, the county had a single courthouse at Ozark. Later, after complaints about how difficult it was to cross the river at times, a second courthouse was established at Charleston, sometime in the 1890s. ”
Is there some reason Franklin County is not two counties, with its two county seats and differing liquor policies in different sections?
Also dropped from 20,000 people in 1910 to 10,000 in 1960, but back up almost to 20,000. Speculation: Bedroom community for Bentonville?
The alcohol thing has to do with Catholics and baptists. The Catholics settled north of the river while baptists settled south.
Also, north of the river in altus (where I grew up) there is soil that acidic and amenable to the growing of grapes. In that small town of 800 people, there are three wineries that distribute to stores all across the south. (Weiderkehr, Post, and Mt. Bethel)
The population drop in the 1910’s had to do with coal. My understanding is that the coal mines dried up about that time.
And provide K-12 babysitting. Won’t someone think about the children?
Ah… another bit in his “stupid rubes vote against their own interest” series. That’s not hacky at all.
Knowing that the food you’re eating is now more likely than before to be contaminated, does that potential contamination smell to you like freedom?
Yep. I trust a quality corporation like Costco or Kroger to ensure food safety wayyy more than the USDA. I also don’t buy food from sketchy places, regardless of USDA inspection. The government’s seal of food approval is largely meaningless.
. I also don’t buy food from sketchy places- I do. keeps the immune system on its toes.
Exactly. When people ask me how it is that I have not missed a day of work in over ten years due to illness, I tell them my poor personal hygiene keeps my immune system fully weaponized.
Krugman can toss my salad. And I don’t mean all the romaine lettuce I had to throw out this year.
Well, I was totally for the shutdown until Krugabe made that scintillating point. Now I’m freaking out man, I’M FREAKING OUT.
“Knowing that the food you’re eating is now more likely than before to be contaminated, does that potential contamination smell to you like freedom?”
OK, Krugabe, I know it’s a foreign concept for you, but before you make an assertion like this, you need to provide EV-I-DENCE that food is more likely to be contaminated.
Companies don’t be like: “Finally! That FDA lackey is on a paid vacation! Now we can fulfill our plan of poisoning all our customers!”
When all of the customers are dead, then they can make some real money.
By going house to house and looting the dead?
RPG economy for the win.
It’s really sad that Krugman jumps to the lamest most played out argument for why we need the government. It sad that they always jump to the same tired canard.
They all grew up worshiping Upton Sinclair and Rachel Carson. Christians fall back on the Bible, Muslims on the Koran, Hindus on the Vedas, and progs on the crappy writings of 20th Century socialists.
Don’t forget John Dewey.
Those corporations have been just waiting for a chance to sicken their customers.
Just look how well Chipotle’s done since they did that!
I was killed yesterday from contaminated chicken.
That’s on top of being killed by net neutrality repeal and the tax cuts.
I’m super duper dead.
Doesn’t the USDA only actually inspect something like 10% of the food supply anyway?
That number seems way too high to me.
Like orders of magnitude too high
Knowing that the food you’re eating is now more likely than before to be contaminated, does that potential contamination smell to you like freedom?
Potential contamination, does that mean I can abort the contamination?
“Potential” contamination is not, by definition, actual contamination.
Ladies and gentlemen, a revered wordsmith at work.
LOL
Seeing as I can’t trust them to keep us safe from romaine lettuce when they are actually on the clock, why should I worry even a little more now? What a disingenuous fuck-wit!
Again I am confused. In this libertarian experiment are taxes much lower and regulations no loger apply? Can you start selling coke and cops don’t bother you? Can you open a liquor store or bar in all states with no license? Cause otherwise …
Knowing that the food you’re eating is now more likely than before to be contaminated

Civilization is collapsing before our very eyes.
Hundreds of furloughed federal employees took their frustrations and anger to the White House on Thursday, demanding an end to the three-week partial government shutdown.
Fired up on a cold, blustery day, they rallied in front of the AFL-CIO headquarters on 16th Street NW across Lafayette Square. The crowd was large enough for the police to close the block as Democratic members of Congress and union leaders praised feds and denounced President Trump. After the rally, the protesters marched through the square to within shouting distance from Trump’s front door.

Negotiations with Democratic leaders quickly collapsed Wednesday when Trump walked out of a White House meeting after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) again refused to provide tax dollars for the wall.
The shutdown situation is bleak. All taxpayers should be outraged that much of the government is out of order.
———–
The rally in the District was one of several around the country, including Kentucky, Colorado, Massachusetts, California, Minnesota, West Virginia and Florida. “These rallies today illustrate not only how high the anxiety level has risen,” said NTEU President Tony Reardon, “but also how committed these employees are to serving their country.”
Those poor, poor people, locked out of their life’s dream of serving the nation. I think i’m going to cry.
they rallied in front of the AFL-CIO headquarters
Democratic members of Congress and union leaders praised feds and denounced President Trump
No, not a publicity stunt at all.
Shouldn’t all those furloughed workers be mopping floors or something to stave off the starvation we are told is so imminent?
demanding an end to the three-week partial government shutdown.
Fuck you. We pay your salary.
Trump should walk out on the lawn, look at the protesters and yell “Why aren’t you bums at work!” Then walk back inside.
He should pull out the ole mushroom and write his name in the snow before saying that.
Bonus points if he splashes a reporter.
After Months Of Complaints, Seattle Clears Homeless Encampment
https://hotair.com/archives/2019/01/10/months-complaints-seattle-clears-homeless-encampment/
Exactly one homeless person accepted the offer of staying in a shelter. The rest moved the party to other camps.
I drive by a church every day on the way to work that has two residents outside — one has a large blue tarp strung up in a doorway, and the other has a nice looking tent set up in another doorway. The blue tarp has been there for a year. I wonder why they put up with it.
The FBI Agents Association, however, urged Congress and the White House to quickly resolve the budget dispute before its members’ “financial insecurity compromises national security.” In a petition to the government’s elected leaders, the association said “missing payments on debts could create delays in securing or renewing security clearances.” In addition to undermining “the FBI’s ability to recruit and retain high-caliber professionals,” the shutdown and the “ongoing financial insecurity caused by the failure to fund the FBI could lead some FBI Agents to consider career options that provide more stability for their families.”
That’s ballsy. Claiming you’re going to quit your job working for the feds in order to find something “more stable”? Yeah, go out thyere in the private sector and see how stable life is when you actually have to provide a service sufficiently valuable that people eill *willingly* pay for it.
These people disgust me.
high-caliber professionals
Yeah, that asshole got 2 years probation. That’s it. And he can still carry.
Oh no! They might have to take Christopher Steele off retainer.
Shouldn’t all those furloughed workers be mopping floors or something to stave off the starvation we are told is so imminent?
Picking up cans and bottles for the deposit.
Sucking dick for their crack money!
RE: Those poor, poor federal workers getting a paid vaca….erhm…soul crushing furlough.
Everyone in the private sector knows he can be laid off at a moment’s notice for any reason or no reason at all. When my company once lost a recompete on a contract, I, along with everyone else, was out on my ass within the week through no fault of my own. This is why you fucking save money, keep your resume current and have a good feel for the market in your specialization. The arrogance of believing that because you are a Federal worker, you are entitled to lifetime, uninterrupted employment is part of the reason we don’t give a shit about your plight today.
TL;DR – WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD
A friend’s husband works for the SEC via a contractor (forensic accounting – cool job) – he’s not getting paid, but my wife claims he’s not going to be getting back-pay when the shutdown is over. I really need to confirm that with him, but I suppose it’s possible, him being a contractor (no hours worked, no pay).
That is certainly not the general case.
I would be very surprised if any contractors are going to get back pay.
An excellent argument for outsourcing more government “work”.
Generally speaking, it’s true that Federal contractors don’t get “back pay” for time not worked. Those working offsite on contracts that are already funded can work through a shutdown (until the money runs out), some may have enough PTO accrued to cover the time, and some contracting companies may pay of their own accord (but they’re usually not allowed to keep enough cash on hand to do this for very long), but otherwise no work = no pay.
I think I have figured out their real beef with the shutdown. Its not financial, because it will have no financial impact on them at all.
Its that, while furloughed, they can’t #RESIST.
Social Justice warriors feel their demands should only apply to the plebes and not themselves!
Gangsta rapCapitalism made me do it!So even the SJW are not immune to the evulz of capitalism?
Why should we trust them then to be able to render anything but bullshit justice?

Fate, yet still hilarious.
um, fake
I think I’ll go down to Mammoth Hot Springs and bag me a trophy elk, this weekend. And a grizzly; I always wanted one of them big old bear skin rugs. Why the hell not? Ranger Rick is on vacation. After that, maybe I’ll wash my truck in Old Faithful.
Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) today led a group of senators in introducing the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019, an updated bill to ban the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.
You can keep your guns, but when you die, the state gets them.
So now instead of naming the guns they are banning (and making it a name-changing game), they are naming the guns you have permission to own.
*buys stock in gun companies*
^^^ This
The bill exempts by name more than 2,200 guns for hunting, household defense or recreational purposes
The dems are playing the long game and trying to stop the signal.
You cant stop the signal.
The Second Amendment is the testing ground. They’ll move on to the First and others next. Defining what you can’t say is so much less woke than defining what you can.
Move on? Hell they are already there.
Seems you folk are the last bastion. Europe has fallen, Canada is teetering on the brink. Please don’t fail us.
They’re still at “these things are off-limits to say”. They haven’t quite gotten to “these are the only things you’re permitted to say”. Yet.
I hope Murphy and Blumenthal both end up getting fucked with a chainsaw.
*buzzers going off at multiple Alphabet Agencies*
They are all on furlough in Trump-Putin-Hitler’s government shutdown Wild Wild West America I thought…
Not to mention that they very likely already have me on record for telling that asshat Blumenthal he is a lying cunt and got a pass for lying about serving in Vietnam at my gym and having the entire crowd there laugh at him and heckle him when he tried to argue with me. Let’s just say he doesn’t come there ever during the hours I attend.
Why would Youtube care?
“You can keep your guns, but when you die, the state gets them.”
In my hometown the local hero’s in blue took it upon themselves to confiscate a guys guns immediately after they heard he died in the hospital. The extended family arrived to find the cops loading up his guns “for safe keeping”. They got them back but it shows you what scumbags cops can be. You know they were planning on the family not following up and keeping them for themselves or auctioning them off.
The extended family arrived to find the cops loading up his guns “for safe keeping”.
And naturally, the cops were charged with breaking and entering and felony theft. Because that’s what they did. A prosecutor willing to throw the book at them could almost certainly hang RICO charges on them as well.
Yup. Unfortunately it was handled the small town way. Cops eventually turned the guns over to the family and nothing else happened.

So the legal drinking age in Japan is 11?
Shutdown could cost the economy $13Billion
I kinda doubt that.
If you are a federal worker, and didn’t learn this lesson the last time the government “shut down” and adjusted your finances accordingly…you are a moron.
If they lowered taxes to match the lowered expenditures, then there’d be more than $13 billion still in the economy.
#problemsolved
Sorry, I’ve run out of fucks to give. Not that I ever gave a fuck for the bloated Federal bureaucracy.
As a former federal worker…how did you not see the travel card is a scam? Pay in cash and get reimbursed from the travel voucher. You won’t get to spend taxpayer funds to stay at the Four Seasons…but you won’t have a balance on a government credit card. Dumbass.
Pay for things in cash. Can’t afford to pay for it in cash? Then you can’t afford it, moron.
Yeah. Being an adult is hard, you jackass.
Here comes the next big problem for furloughed workers
This reminds me of teachers striking for more pay when they’re already making more than their neighbors. It’s like a parade of unsympathetic people. Sadly, union negotiators decide pay and not voters.
Unfortunately you are now required to use the travel card for all official travel.
Not getting reimbursed by your employer for doing your job is certainly shitty, but… after 26 years you should have (a lot more than) $1000 in savings.
True, but the job I did before before quitting was very travel dependent, it was pretty typical to rack up several thousand dollars (flights, rentals, lodging, meals) before the reimbursement would come. It would be very difficult for me to cover a $5K bill while these overgrown children figure out who has a bigger dick.
I have little sympathy, but you have to admit the whole shutdown is a fucking joke. It’s political theater. Everyone knows the gov employees will get paid for their ‘time off’, and I personally think they should. If a private company shutdown for two weeks because of a pissing match between owners (unlikely of course, I have no allegory to this in the private sector), I doubt they would not provide some compensation to the workers, else they may lose the most skilled and important of the bunch to competitors. Maybe not full pay, or maybe a PTO reimbursement, IDK, but something.
Meh – during the last recession, the company made everyone take unpaid time off for a week – on top of a pay cut. A lot of people signed up for unemployment for that week.
I was too dang proud to do that.
I used it only on what was required at the time. Hotel, typically a cheap one, and flights. I never understood why people went and spent $100 on meals while traveling.
Of course, I was at the VA and my travel locations included exotic Big Spring, TX,
They are willing to let me skip my next minimum payment, but the interest will still accrue. Thanks a lot. I would have used the next paycheck to pay off the whole amount as usual.
(1) If you started with a zero balance because you pay off the whole amount out of every paycheck, just how much interest is that? Interest isn’t charged on amounts added to your bill since the last due date. You have a grace period, so he won’t be charged any interest at all until his next due date.
(2) The minimum payment is 2%. Even if you managed to put $3K on your card since your last paycheck (which paid it down to zero), your minimum payment would be $60 whole American dollars. You don’t have $60 in your checking account?
(3) Who calls when they are going to skip a “minimum payment”? Missing one has pretty much zero consequence. Maybe a small late fee.
Jeff Craven is either a complete fool who should in no way be trusted with any responsibility, or a (dare I say craven) liar.
Are we really pretending these aren’t some of the most excessively compensated people on the planet, relative to their private-sector counterparts? Sympathy for the contractors caught up in this, of course, but why do we imagine this is like furloughing Walmart lane jockeys?
Many in DC and regional offices at the SES or the the highest levels are overly compensated in my opinion. Do major corporations pay much less than $187K for senior executives (top pay at the Forest Service anyway)? All managers/executives seem overly compensated to me.
Forest Service top 100
I know regular joes out don’t make anywhere near that amount.
Quick aside: Before I left, I saw a regional breakdown of permanent employees by GS level and identity (race, gender, etc). The purpose of showing us supervisors was to highlight how little diversity we had in the region. What I saw was how bloated the top levels were and how lacking the field personnel was. Essentially, more chiefs then indians. One example of many why I left.
As a former federal worker…how did you not see the travel card is a scam? Pay in cash and get reimbursed from the travel voucher. You won’t get to spend taxpayer funds to stay at the Four Seasons…but you won’t have a balance on a government credit card. Dumbass.
I had a somewhat similar thing happen at my company. I had put a trip on the corporate card right before they switched expense systems. The switch didn’t go well, and there was no system in place for nearly 3 weeks. Y’know what I did? I paid the damn $1800 bill myself and went through the pain in the ass process to get personally reimbursed. It sucks when your employer doesn’t pay your expenses in a timely fashion. It is idiocy on your part to have no backup plan for when shit hits the fan.
Having $13 billion taken out of the economy in this fashion
How is this going to effect the economy at all? Every single furloughed worker is going to get back pay. Aside from a minor hiccup in their cash flow (assuming this ends in the next, say, month) their income, and spending, will be totally unaffected on any credible timeline.
Major defense contractors are still being paid, SS is funded, hospitals are being reimbursed for Medicaire. I can sort of see it if you happen to be a small business in the DC area, a restaurant for example…aside from that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Agreed MS. Count this FedGov as one who is doing just fine because my family isnt suffering.
Once again, the message is that the purpose of the federal government is providing jobs to people so they can go out and spend money.
I’m shocked—shocked!—to find Nazism in this socialism.
I like the one comment taking issue with the out of context “smears” of Shaw. He only meant execution for those who can’t be rehabilitated! Well, that’s grand, off to the gulag with you, peasant, be thankful we don’t just put one in the back of your head.
Does Hihn still blow up the FEE comment section? I need to spend more time over there, they put out some good articles.
I remember when the Fact Checking Industrial Complex shit its collective drawers when Glenn Bleck played the clip of Shaw discussing how people should have to justify their existence to a community board. As it turns out, he was totally j/k!
Tom Toles- more than just a shitty cartoonist
…[L]et’s look at Ocasio-Cortez. If nothing else, this New York Democrat conveys an American future. In politics, this is not nothing. In a dispirited, broken, spiraling-toward-apocalypse America, it is a lot. A Democrat party that has been in intellectual retreat for 40 years needs a fresh relaunch, and you don’t accomplish a relaunch with plodding incrementalism.
Orcasio-Cortez also displays, despite all the scary hang-wringing about her policy inclinations, an unmistakably vibrant version of American optimism. The only thing she seems interested in tearing down are obstacles that stand between real American people and better lives. And as for those scary policy inclinations of hers?
They happen to be about dead-center for the New Deal Era that was built by the much-revered Greatest Generation, when government was understood by both parties to be a necessary part of a thriving, cohesive nation. And they also happen to be in the exact direction the Democratic Party and the United States needs to start making some vigorous progress toward.
\By all means, let’s put the future of the American economy in the hands of an “enthusiastic” child who seems to have no real comprehension of how wealth is created or what drives an economy. She’s just like FDR, with a working set of legs.
Who in the fuck are these people? I’m wordless…
You know what would be great? If we brought back all those tired ideas that didn’t work the first time around and tried them again. Yeah, that would be great.
The “right” people have not been in charge of it, which is why it never has really been done…
That’s what I am told every time I point out that after some 120 million were killed and around 3 billion held hostage by marxism while fascism killed another 80 million and gave us the fucking government must pick winners & losers crony system we have today that is quickly destroying the world’s economies, we would be stupid to listen to anyone telling us that we should try more of this shit again.
They worked just fine. Command economies, pogroms and gulags do exactly what they are intended to do. They give those pulling the strings power, prestige and comfort without the pesky having to satisfy customers aspects of business. Is the society as a whole better off? No, but Stalin was a petty criminal before the revolution, Hitler was an unemployed artist, Lenin was a crappy lawyer.
By its nature, those with great wealth will garner power under a capitalist system, while it is by design that under collectivism, only those with power can ever garner wealth, and then do so in obscene ways.
There’s a reason the Democrats have been intellectually moribund for 40 years. The 1970s were the direct consequence of their “intellectual” policies. They haven’t been able to come up with an alternate solution which is why they are still stuck vilifying Reagan and Thatcher instead of learning from them, and they are dogmatically unable to accept that regulation, taxes, and welfare spending have limits.
I will say that my description above is not entirely fair. “New Labour” under Tony Blair and Bill Clinton Democrats had learned from it, but then their respective parties failed to adapt to the 2010s and are now going back to the 1950s.
“Orcasio”
Is she the kind that can come out in daylight or not?
I think that unlike Trolls that get turned to stone by sunlight, they only suffer a -2 penalty to their rolls or something…
The New Deal never went away. Like, this is the shit that drives me nuts. 70% of the 4 trillion dollar budget goes to either New Deal programs or Great Society programs.
I might be willing to have an argument about welfare spending if we lived in some pre New Deal reality where the feds only tax the richest Americans less than 10% of their income and there is no Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security.
But that’s not reality.
“They happen to be about dead-center for the New Deal Era that was built by the much-revered Greatest Generation…”
Well really, the “Greatest Generation” was ten years old when all of that bullshit was being cobbled together.
Also, “an unmistakably vibrant version of American optimism”? Hey, they may have a gun to your head demanding money and property, but at least they’re smiling and waving jazz hands!
government was understood by both parties to be a necessary part of a thriving, cohesive nation
I don’t think anybody really argues that strawman. The argument is over how much government.
an unmistakably vibrant version of American optimism
Since when is being optimistic about fundamentally transforming America into a socialist state a version of “American” optimism?
Okay, I thought this was funny.
You can’t parody this level of stupid.
The children shall lead the way.
*shudder*
heheheh, He’s Old!
I don’t think about you at all…
That was a line in Fountainhead. In fact, somebody quoted that at me years ago, which is what got me to re-read the book, which is when I realized it was a better book than Atlas Shrugged.
Nice. I started with Atlas Shrugged, then We The Living, and never got around to The Fountainhead.
Try Anthem. It’s a fable.
I’ve read it, forgot about that one. I think it fell between Atlas and We The Living in the timeline. It contains all the seeds of the rest of her fiction, but I found it embarrassingly corny.
found it embarrassingly corny
As fables are.
I suppose. Although I wouldn’t say she was exactly dropping Aesopian technique with Anthem.
I agree it seems like a prog rock song. Like a Rush song maybe. We the Living is Underrated. It explains how Ayn Rand was made.
We the Living is the best literarily speaking because it avoids the lectures and shows rather than tells the evils of collectivism. Anthem never gets mentioned, but is solid,
I couldn’t get through it. I got through Shrugged but I bailed on that final speech after about 6 pages – I think it went on for another 20.
I found she had interesting ideas, but subtle she ain’t. She keeps bashing you over the head with it.
Maybe I’ll give Foutainhead another shot.
Fountainhead is a little more subtle. It was the prototype for Atlas Shrugged.
For Shorter Ayn Rand, read Anthem.
Ok so you sandwich my post that Anthem never gets mentioned with mentions of Anthem. Don’t I look silly now lol.
Talented fingers.

A quick thought on the #metoo hysteria business-
My wife is asleep in the chair with my 3 month old daughter right now. She is home everyday with our children in our house way in the sticks of bumfuck nowhere. Often by herself (and armed) but with me othereise when I’m not working.
There are few people on the face on this earth who are less likely to be raped/harassed/assaulted than her.
Just a thought for the #metoo crowd.
SO you are blaming the victim? I expected no less from someone who thinks women should be at home barefoot and pregnant
Barefoot, pregnant, minding the house and chillens AND churning out awesome T-shirt designs…
And armed too.
I mentioned minding the house, DEG.
According to a sizeable contingent of their ideologues, the fact that she has a child is proof positive she was raped at least once.
I just listened to the Jayme Closs press conference. Each of the officials got up and gave law enforcement a tongue-bath. The fucking heroes didn’t find her – she fucking escaped!!
Were they just minding their own bidness, eating a Big Mac?
“Did you hear the news?”
Dunkin’ Donuts empties out…Sound of sirens going to the press conference.
But they brought shoulder blankets and Coco!!!
LOL!
“And Some Still Call Him Pig…”
Keep your damn blanket that was probably last used to warm the louse infested vomit crusted drunk in the gutter.
Haven’t followed closely, but… odds on a Natural Born Killers scenario, minus Rodney?
That’s where my dark little mind went.
Creeper named
That guy looks very much like Himmler.
Sexy Himmler.
If you are unaffected by the shutdown, it’s important to be sympathetic toward those that are. Having $13 billion taken out of the economy in this fashion will tax non-profits trying to help, and many were struggling before this latest blow.
Let’s all shed a tear for the nonprofit parasites who get fat off their “special relationship” with the government.
Boo fucking hoo.
Everyone crying about this seems like someone I would struggle not to wish ill. So, while I recognize that my joy has an element of unpleasantness, I am reveling in it.
sympathetic toward those that are
Sorry, it takes more than a delayed paycheck to get sympathy from me.
I feel bad for the contractor I know, since that money is flat out gone, but otherwise I’m with you.
I might feel sorry for their plight. Unfortunately, my store of sympathy for them was all used up when they were reporting about their terrible hardships a week ago and they hadn’t actually missed a check yet.
Are government workers not eligible for unemployment benefits during a shut down? Or does the guarantee of back pay somehow negate eligibility?
I think, for the same reason the shutdown happens in the first place (the Anti-Deficiency Act), there is no actual guarantee of back pay. The government cannot spend money Congress has not appropriated, and if Congress had appropriated it, then it wouldn’t be a shutdown. Of course, they’ve never not included back pay in the spending bills that ended shutdowns before, so it is practically guaranteed.
I thought I read that Congress had already authorized back pay.
CNN to its San Diego affiliate: Have one of your reporters come on the air to tell us how terrible the wall is!
San Diego affiliate: Actually, everyone here thinks it works really well.
CNN: lolbye

[Note: I still think the wall as Trump wants to build it is unnecessary and pointless, but there are places where it makes sense (and most of those places already have a wall]
Cribbed, but: When will Democrats start advocating tearing down fences where they already exist? Seems like a natural follow-up for Acosta’s ridiculous border wall boast: “No problems here!”
Gated communities for them, but not for thee.
I actually once asked on of these open border advocates, a rich ass female lawyer and wife of another lawyer, whose only interaction with Latin Americans was the maid/nanny/gardener working for her, if she would let some of these people she advocated should be allowed over here move into her house. After all, she was demanding the rest of us allow this. You should have seen her reaction.
Most of these people telling us how evil we are for not accepting clearly stupid shit practically never will be made to deal with the consequences of their beliefs/demands, which is why they care very little for people that will be impacted and feel no compunction of telling those people they are racists/sexists/misogynists and so on for not just accepting the risks they themselves will never have to be exposed to.
I guarantee you that if there was a way to make them have to face the music themselves, they suddenly would have a problem with this shit. Just like these marxist are all for green energy until someone proposed putting the windmills in the same area they usually have their expensive houses and yachts. NIMBY.
Somewhere I saw a description of his actual proposal, which is a mix of upgrading existing walls, extending existing walls, and putting a new stretch in on the Texas border. Plus, more detention facilities, staff, and judges.
Before they built the wall in San Diego, they were catching around 600K illegals a year trying to cross there. After they built the wall, it dropped to 30K. Tell me again about how walls don’t work.
This, maybe?
Here’s the thing I can’t figure out. I hear people argue in the same argument that the proposed wall will be immoral and ineffective.
But, really, it’s simply not possible for it to be both. It can only be immoral if it is actually having an effect. If it isn’t stopping people from entering, what can be immoral about it?
It could be that they’re not arguing in good faith – crazy, I know.
Pisses me off to no end that I have a 50/50 chance (depending upon the mood of the thug at the border) of ever crossing it again in my lifetime. I’m just a regular working Joe that fucked up minimally in 1999 but I’ll be flagged. My Wife’s family is American, she’s a landed immigrant to our country and she still feels uncomfortable crossing to the States. I’ve missed weddings, graduations, funerals and whatever else I wanted to do or see south of the border. It’s bullshit that they see people like me as being worthy of the red-flag and let a bunch of sponges invade from the south. I don’t want anything from your country except an experience and then to go home again.
Excellent point!
I’m so glad that girl is alive. I didn’t expect that, but that’s great news. Lock that dude up for life.
That’s one of those deals that makes me question whether I’m against the death penalty or not. If he is found guilty of double murder and the kidnapping and almost guaranteed rape and torture of a child….hang ’em.
I’m with ya but I don’t think it’s going to happen in Wisconsin. Texas it would.
I am hungry. It took me to long to get the sous vide going and the meat was partially frozen. I have another hour to wait
[Note: I still think the wall as Trump wants to build it is unnecessary and pointless, but there are places where it makes sense (and most of those places already have a wall]
It depends on your definition of “wall”. Find/replace “wall” with “improved security”. There absolutely needs to be a physical barrier in places where towns adjoin along the border.
Disclaimer: More unionized Border Patrol agents is not an outcome I really want to see.
Just as in most debates (see, also: Obamacare), a tremendous amount of time and energy are is spent debating superficial details, as important underlying fundamental issues are ignored.
Are government workers not eligible for unemployment benefits during a shut down? Or does the guarantee of back pay somehow negate eligibility?
I suspect:
a) The expectation is that the process of applying for, and starting unemployment compensation will take longer than the shutdown
b) The unemployment payments would have to be given back if back pay is collected (I fucking hope so)
This fucking bullshit about how “not paying those govt workers will hurt GDP” really gets my goat.
If I stop spending 500 bucks a month on cocaine, is that going to have a “detrimental” effect on my household wealth?
It would be more analogous (although also more absurd) if you said,
Will my dealer be able to pay his bills if I don’t buy cocaine from him this month, even though I’ve already put the money in my cocaine escrow account?
Heh.
Of course, the real scam is that the government workers are going to be paid. Their pay is just delayed. Their income for the year will be exactly the same as it would have been without the shutdown.
But the starvin’ chillens down K-Street! Have you no heart? Beggar bowls abound, you monster!
