I’m in a bit of a food coma, having eaten about double my weekly cheese ration last night. With plenty of wine to wash it down. So I won’t dwell much on things and get right down to business; this way, I might get another chance to sleep it off.
Today’s birthdays include the electrifying Andre-Marie Ampere; blues pioneer Huddie Ledbetter aka Lead Belly; classical composer Walter Piston; half of a comedy team and sometimes God, George Burns; Mormon nutbag (but largely right about politics) Cleon Skousen; coiner of a thousand memes, DeForest Kelley; “I’m just a country yodeler” Slim Whitman; speaker of the most famous line in movie history, Patricia Neal; badass astronaut Buzz Aldrin; weird and fun filmmaker David Lynch; and best UN ambassador ever, Nikki Haley.
To the news!
Nutpunch from my new home state. What IS it about cops in Arizona? They’re as bad as Chicago.
And yet more “shutdown” kabuki.
Perforated pipelines? Omar Fayad? I blame the caravans. And Trump.
Assholes. It’s assholes all the way down.
“Heroic Mulatto to the white courtesy phone!”
Wasn’t this a Fredric Brown short story?
Well, it worked in Shawshank Redemption.
Obama’s wars, keeping America safe. And I don’t see Trump trying to end this shit.
Speaking of which, here’s a news flash: Lindsay Graham is still a murderous asshole.
Well, you have extra paid vacation. What do you do? Oh yeah, this.
The inevitable Old Guy music, today featuring the Birthday Boy. It’s a great piece, with Piston having feet in both Classical and Modern idioms. And this college ensemble plays their asses off.
I survived snowmaggedon !
I’m still in the tail end of it and awaiting the rain and snow to flash freeze. I have a 1-2 hour window to move a ton of H2O in its various forms.
We got more snow last weekend. We are getting the cold though.wind chill -13.
Found a tidbit while looking that up. Kelley died at this place.
That’s a pretty nice perk.
It’s a pretty big facility.
Another shutdown day and no one cares.
Time to RIF SES.
I’m curious how long Trump will keep the shutdown going. 6 months? A year? How long before the ‘non essential’ workers are just no longer considered employed?
Not soon enough, my dude.
Seems like the emphasis is the missing pay checks as opposed to any ‘missing services’ .
An excellent point. It’s interesting that Media chose that approach. It doesn’t seem to have even occurred to them to try the “these people offer a legitimate service” part. The National parks “people are dying” narrative was pretty funny.
After 30 days of shut-down they can start RIF-ing these employees. Then they would have something real to bitch about.
I don’t see it happening but will be interesting.
Whereas most of Pornhub’s traffic is from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m., post-midnight visits to the sit were also up almost 12 percent.
This should count as a stimulus package.
And here I thought that watching porn was all that government employees did when they were on the clock. Not counting TSA, since they are getting paid as participants.
Were the hookers in D.C. on shutdown too? Yeesh.
Meh, hookers aren’t cheap when you’re living paycheck to paycheck.
Considering a lot of the furloughed people are looking for jobs during the shutdown, I expect the supply of hookers to go up 🙂

The Syrians and the Russians seem to be handling it just fine now. Funny how the militants pretty much folded after we stopped our financial and material support to the “moderate rebels.”
We just handed out palates of creatine to ISIS. Now they want roids. That’s over the line.

“What is not being shown on the video is that the same youth and a few others became emotional because of the power, resilience and love we inherently carry in our DNA,” another organizer, Nathalie Farfan, said.
What also isn’t being shown in that video or mentioned by The NYT is that same group of Catholic boys mocking three black dudes that are screaming about all homos rotting in hell.
Hey, those black dudes aren’t intersectionally powerful like Catholic high school students.
Intersectionality

Thanks for the link of the extended version of all that btw.
Don’t know about you, but the video on that site takes forever to load. Still haven’t figured out why or how YouTube managed to get the videos of that scrubbed from their site.
It took forever for me to load it too. Had to just clean up most of the house in the meantime.
So what’s the final disposition of this story, did the schoolboys go looking for trouble or did they react to provocation by these loving activists?
Who knows at this point with everyone out there muddying the waters with their ideologically motivated versions swamping the interwebz. The boys claim the Chief charged into their circle and didn’t know what he wanted at first.
Here ya go. This shows exactly who engaged who. The kids were getting taunted relentlessly by the black Israelite dudes (whatever they’re called) and The Chief comes in and gets up in the kids’ grills. https://youtu.be/t3EC1_gcr34?t=4341
Jesus. Those kids are going to get hung out to dry and the media just doesn’t give a fuck.
And every time you hear the media go on about bullying, see how they’re fine with wrongthinkers getting bullied.
Doesn’t GAF? They are actively promoting an obviously untrue version of events.
CNN interview.
“Sometimes some MAGA hat wearing teenagers just need their ass kicked!!!!”
Somebody gives you a smug look, whoop their ass. Ah, tolerance.
I shouldn’t have read the comments.
And apparently, the school was going to take disciplinary action against the kids too, if I read the article correctly. This is awful and that BS media job only served once again to divide the people more.
Case in point, got into a nasty spat today cause I had to deal with assholes who were saying Catholics are all malicious bigoted rapists because of stuff like from the “video”.
It’s now en vogue on the Left. Rich whites are all on board with anti-Catholicism and other Christians are next.
Job done.
Next? Evangelicals have been targeted for decades.
The KKK has been targeting Catholics for decades. It’s it surprising that it’s decedents keep it up?
Shit. Progressives were going after Catholic schools a hundred years ago as well.
The media is complicit and have zero shame.
What a shitshow. I’d say they exercised a good bit of restraint. Try that with any number of the psycho leftist groups and see what happens.
British blogger David Thompson uses the word “psychodrama” for things like this, and points out how so much of SJW is just an excuse for acting like nasty, thuggish bullies.
Thompson’s Friday Ephemera threads are also a lot of fun.
Thompson, in the comments:
They’re getting even for past bullying by engaging in bullying against a proxy for that bully. Sounds plausible.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npX801xLSFY&feature=youtu.be
Considering that they were the ones confronted, this was purposely done by an activist (the guy beating the drum is a professional complainer) to tarnish the March for Life
Considering that they were the ones confronted
That’s the infuriating part of all this. It’s in the FUCKING VIDEO. “Suddenly he was surrounded by a group of teens…” This is just unreal, even by MSM standards.

It seems and feels like the thugs and bullies (like antifa) have the law on their side a little more than other groups.
I hope I’m wrong
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., tweeted, “What we didn’t hear from the President was any sympathy for the federal workers who face so much uncertainty because of the chaos of the #TrumpShutdown.”
Wont somebody think of the leaches?
Schumer, D-N.Y., concluded, “It was the President who single-handedly took away DACA and TPS protections in the first place – offering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking.”
The last thing that the D’s actually want is for the dreamers to get citizenship. The Ds want to keep them in legal status limbo forever so that they can be used as a political pawn to be moved when convenient.
Maybe it’s like all of this shit shouldn’t have been left up to executive orders and decisions. These assclowns will never learn though and it’s as you said, those people are just used as pawns.
If it’s enshrined in law as opposed to an executive order their status won’t be able to be changed on a whim. It’s a fair exchange in my view and the Dems should grab the opportunity before the DACAs begin realizing what you just said.
Goddammit, my hair hurts. Will SOMEBODY pick up that fucking phone, already? The ringing is driving me nuts.

-1F this morning – needless to say I was in no hurry to get up this morning. Extra pair of socks and long underwear, all to brush off the car before heading out to do some grocery shopping. Fighting off the urge to buy a big bag of cookies and plonk myself on the sofa. Instead I’ll learn a blues solo on guitar today and maybe work on the stairs project.
We’ve got freezing rain because the air aloft is warm. It’s only about 20F at the surface.
I don’t mind two feet of snow, but fuck freezing rain.
My freezing rain just went back to full on snow. Time to get that slop moving before it locks up solid.
Three day weekend, right? Enjoy.
Sure, 3 day weekend if you work for the Gov. Monday for the rest of us shlubs.
I _could_ take the three day weekend, as all the courthouses are closed. But I aminstead working tomorrow, because I spent too much time in court last week. So the mail piled up, and I am trying to prepare for a trial next week that may not happen.
No snow accumulation here, so I return us to the cold-humidity discussion. At 7am I found these:
MEM 27°F, 77%RH => 2,300ppm water, enthalpy = 3kJ/kg
MSP -4°F, 68%RH => 430 ppm water, enthalpy = -19kJ/kg
So, as I like to say, there’s no appreciable moisture in cold air, even down South.
The relative humidity discussion really misses the point and greatly misleads the general discourse.
Now, check out noon on the last Fourth of July (2018):
SAN 74°F, 57%RH => 10,200ppm water, enthalpy = 49kJ/kg (arguably a perfect day)
MEM 92°F, 54%RH => 17,500ppm water, enthalpy = 78kJ/kg (muggy but could be much worse)
MSP 74°F, 82%RH => 14,800ppm water, enthalpy = 61kJ/kg (almost muggy but comfy)
DFW 89°F, 57%RH => 16,800ppm water, enthalpy = 75kJ/kg (muggy but could be much worse)
LGA 88°F, 61%RH => 17,400ppm water, enthalpy = 76kJ/kg (muggy but could be worse)
TUS 98°F, 14%RH => 5,300ppm water, enthalpy = 50kJ/kg (dry heat is a real thing)
Humidity calculator here: http://www.michell.com/us/calculator/
Weather history here: https://www.wunderground.com
Think of enthalpy as the relative energy level in anything. San Diego feels perfect because, when there, our innards and our environment are at about the same enthalpy, so no heat flow is felt or needs to be supported by sweat, calories, or any other bodily effort.
I have a handy spreadsheet that will do %RH and %moisture from a wet-bulb/dry-bulb, if you’re that fascinated
Oh: HVAC has been half my career; I “found” the weather data and translated it to help give it meaning. FWIW I did graduate work in HVAC and just threw out those sites because they’re easy to work and understand. There are a hundred psychometric models out there, and I jump to whichever one is the easiest to use depending on the area I’m working in; for that matter, I’m working in SI probably half the time.
I threw out today’s figures to show there’s literally no moisture in cold air; MSP is cold today strictly because it’s cold (dry bulb, as you point out). But on some day soon when it’s 45°F 75% here, I’ll make the comparisons again to show how bad that is. The July4 stuff was just a hat/tip to Glibs around the country and an anecdote about a moment when Memphis had about the ugliest weather of any.
When I was a young 20-something just entering the world of air testing, my then-boss once said, “look, room temperature air just can hold more than around 2% water”, and that’s always stuck with me as a reference point.
(moisture content is important to my business, since emissions are always reported in “dry” units, e.g. pounds(x)/dry-standard-cubic-foot (or g/dscm if you’re into metric))
Absolutely: air could get to 4%, which would double the enthalpy from the figures shown above. I like PPM because it’s universally understood, whereas grains/pound, for example, if hard to grasp. Same with enthalpy: it’s a high concept, but it captures total energy of water and air in one figure easily; if I compare any enthalpy to San Diego, the linear impression most folk can take away from that is both accurate and useful.
“There are only a few things that should go in your vagina and vegetables generally aren’t one of them.”

FAYUL
this belongs @ the bottom
I note Tucson and San Diego are very close on that metric. It’s the sun that gets you in the summer here; in the shade is usually not bad at all except on the very hottest days.
Thought you’d enjoy that: TUS was the obvious Glib dry-heat locale.
Sunload is huge: recorded temps are (only) drybulb in the shade. We design truck HVAC to accommodate about 1,000 W/m^2 sunload and test in your neighborhood (somewhere off I-10): just park the truck facing south on an August day and see if the A/C can keep up. Bad news: as trucks have become more aero, it’s easier for sun to hit and be absorbed into the dash; good news: glass is better at deflecting non-visible radiation than ever.
Don, always a blast at parties
Nutpunch from my new home state. What IS it about cops in Arizona? They’re as bad as Chicago.
Some fraction of AZ did keep electing Joe Arpaio and John McCain.
And lot’s of red light/speeding cameras. Rarely go to AZ, but got 2 speeding tickets in 2 separate piss-ant towns in the last 10 years.
When I lived there (1993) the Az cops were pigs just like the LAPD. Got like 5 tickets in a year, rousted over and over again. If you’re in your twenties, they will mess with you.

It’s amazing to see how fast a false narrative is just accepted as reality. Videos that were not edited by activists show the native American confront the boys and people near him shouting for the boys to go back to Europe. Tim Pool has shown this, but everyone has just accepted the narrative.
It’s really interesting that for a media that covered the March for Life exactly zero seconds, they certainly got video of this.
This was probably the most media exposed MoL I’ve ever heard of. Between the Ben Shapiro bit and this? Whew boy.
I’m reminded of Sam Gross’s An Elephant is Warm and Mushy: we make up our story based on our limited experience. The more narrow one’s perspective, the less accurate the story is.
Some folks are only interested in furthering their own narrative, of course. But I’d guess that most folks who have this story wrong are of the “best first” or “that’s gold” types: they’re rushing to publish with no further thinking at all.
I’ll give everyone a day to figure this out and then I’ll hold folks accountable if suitable retractions and updates don’t appear. Meanwhile, I’m back to attacking Catholics and private schools because of something I saw on twitter!
We see it repeatedly: People aren’t willing to dedicate enough time to watch the unedited video and are too ignorant to know they’re being lied to. It’s a big problem that will only get bigger.
I generally just don’t believe anything as a rule. Although in this situation there were plenty of smug punchable faces
Yes, best policy is just to be skeptical.
I remember when adults harassing kids was worse than kids not looking the way you want them to look.
This seems to be the common refrain from people intent on ruining the lives of kids. And just for reference, because a lot of people keep identifying the kids as “rich” because they attend private school, the vast majority of Catholic school students are anything but rich. Half of my high school class was receiving financial support.
The mass coverage on this is extremely skewed. The unedited videos clearly show the School kids waiting in a group and then this Indian drummer guy kind of charges into the middle of them. The kids literally provoked no one, nor were they trying to provoke anyone until someone walked right into their midst and started banging a drum. WTF people?!?!? Another fake news, Jump the shark media moment?
Not defending the injun, but charged seems a little dramatic, Also I’ve heard the kids saying “we weren’t being assholes, we’re just spirited and were chanting school cheers!” If tOSU fans are assholes for chanting O-H…I-O in random public spaces (and they are) the same hold true for these kids.
Watch the video. At no point does anyone say “build the wall”, but the kids are told to go back to Europe. It’s OK to not just accept the narrative, especially when it’s false.
You’re not playing “a pox on both their houses” when you accept a lie, you’re just showing your hand.
Did I say they were chanting Maga slogans? I said if they were doing exactly what they themselves claim, they were still being obnoxious assholes. Also slightly tongue in check*, also lighten up Francis.
*tOSU fans (and I’m an Alumnus) are assholes.
Privileged mostly-white boys will be privileged mostly-white boys.
What is it that they claimed? They were there for the March for Life. Their own protest. Left wing agitators decided to engage and disrupt.
You are as disingenuous and tiresome as Palin’s Buttplug.
They claimed they were chanting school chants in public (it’s in a letter by one of the boys explaining their side), that, In my book, makes them obnoxious assholes regardless if any of this other stuff ever happened, again slightly tongue in cheek, Also lighten up Francis.
Chanting at a demonstration makes you an asshole now?
Don’t worry about my mental state. I’m not more agitated by you than I was someone like Palin’s Buttplug. I’m just calling a spade a spade.
They weren’t chanting school cheers in a random public location. Nor did they claim that’s what happened. I welcome a link from you backing your position up, but I know full well that you put your typical little spin on the subject to play up your usual schtick They had participated in a protest, and were in fact confronted/engaged by Black Israelites who made it all about the gays. The MAGA hat wearing Catholics were responding to nut jobs who were ranting about how Americans are a bunch of evil sodomites.
Then a huckster Native American with a drum and backed by his own supporters decided to enter the group of teens.
Right. Hyperbole’s argument shifts just a tad from one comment to the next. It’s not atypical with him when he presents these bullshit arguments in some attempt at playing the contrarian.
Even if these kids were in some way assholes for chanting their school cheers at a protest or whatever the hell someone wants to argue, they are now at risk of discipline from their school and soon will have their names and faces dragged through the mud if the prog lynch mob has their way.
Chanting at a demonstration makes you an asshole now?
Right. The clash details don’t interest me because I’m not really interested in anyone’s motives and I’m unaware of any violence: people with strong feelings stood toe-to-toe for whatever reason and held forth.
A public debate arose; I support that; feelings will get hurt and some will come to appear as assholes. I’m good all the way around: wouldn’t want to live in a country where this can’t happen.
The law of “get the jerk” isn’t important to me; principles are. I’m unaware of any news that would affect my philosophy.
Even my favorite coverage is largely twisted. Reuters, it’s not front page news at BBC, NPR is carrying the MSM narrative but hiding behind “draws outrage,” which can be every lede anymore. Fox merely acknowledges a confrontation, which strikes me as weirdly fair for them.
But it is no more to me than if these same folk had met on a soccer pitch for 90 minutes.
Linky
As you can read they were not at a demonstration they were waiting for their bus to take them to the March, so at a public space, The Lincoln Memorial, they started chanting school chants, not demonstration chants, not protests. They were behaving like tOSU fans do with their ‘O-H…I-O” shit. I find both signs of obnoxious assholery.
Did you miss the part in your own link, consistent with several others already posted here, where it all started with the Black Israelites shouting homophobic rhetoric at the students? That this preceded Phillips and his drum?
I read the entire letter, what have I said that leads you to believe I dispute any of that?
“they started chanting school chants”
FFS. This is normal behavior for a bunch of kids on an outing. If it’s not school chants, it might be some song, or some stupid meme that’s been going around lately. It doesn’t make them “obnoxious assholes.”
It doesn’t make them “obnoxious assholes.”
Sure it does. New parents bring crying kids to restaurants, drunk college girl screech ear-piercingly at each other, aficionados of rap and death metal play their car stereos way too loud, all these things are normal behavior for said group and also make the perpetrators obnoxious assholes. Same with high school boys making a spectacle of themselves in public. ‘Have some couth people’, that’s all I’m saying, well that and ‘lighten up Francis’, I’m also saying that quite a bit today.
If being annoying makes a child an asshole, then all children are assholes.

I agree. I’ve gone from “that sounds plausible” to “Oh, fuck no”on UBI over the course of the last year. The incentives are all wrong. It would very quickly be used as a way to coerce the tax cattle into doing what they are told. As someone here already said, we already have a UBI; $0 as dictated by nature.
Yup. Requirements for being eligible would start accreting. It’s the fastest road to a complete totalitarian dystopia.
I don’t want green teeth.
What you did there- I saw that
Disrupter-in-Chief
“Disruption is the key word and that is very similar to how he managed all of his businesses. It’s a style and a process for him, it can oftentimes work and it can oftentimes be a problem,” Brabender said. “I don’t think there will ever be another Donald Trump in the White House and his style will never be duplicated.”
Yet, Trump’s most notable policy actions have been unilateral in scope. Executive orders like the travel ban or the decision to leave the Paris climate agreement have been among the most highlighted aspects of his presidency. Trump has rolled back over a dozen environmental regulations set into motion by former President Barack Obama, but his successor is likely to do the same. Climate change has already become a leading issue for presidential candidates in 2020, with billionaire megadonor Michael Bloomberg saying that he’ll insist Democrats running for office have detailed climate change plans.
And so, to the dismay of his supporters and the delight of his opponents, much of what Trump has accomplished in the White House can be reversed under the next commander-in-chief.
“As it is now, all of these policies are policies that can be easily undone―which is not the hallmark of a strong presidency,” Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston, told Newsweek.
Last year, Rottinghaus conducted a survey of over 170 members of the American Political Science Association’s Presidents and Executive Politics section, which concluded that Trump is the worst president ever. As Rottinghaus said, Trump hasn’t done enough to be “etched into Mounth Rushmore.”
It’s nice to hear from an impartial observer. I couldn’t help noticing the “political science expert” neglected to mention Congress’ decades-long abdication of their duties and responsibilities.
It’s funny how they manage not to accuse President Penandphone of being an ineffectual schmuck.
Also in there:
the nomination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused by multiple women of sexual harassment and assault, gave the high court it’s first conservative majority in half a century.
They just can’t help themselves.
“Climate change has already become a leading issue for presidential candidates in 2020”
Maybe for Democrat candidates, but for the average voter it’s a non start.
Plus I’m told time is of the essence and that we’ve already past like our 9th point of no return. So Trumphitler’s actions weren’t entirely meaningless and reversible, right?
Ninth? How old are you? We passed nine thirty years ago.
Any other conclusion would have gotten them banned from most social media sites.
I’ve got a simple algorithm that would replace those presidents.
“`
def rank_president(i,presidents):
president = presidents[I]
If president.party == “GOP”:
return len(presidents)
return randint(1,5)
“`
Not disrupting = disrupting
Got it.
Climate change has already become a leading issue for presidential candidates in 2020, with billionaire megadonor Michael Bloomberg saying that he’ll insist Democrats running for office have detailed climate change plans.
Money in politics: bad.
Wealth disparity: bad.
Billionaire megadonor dictating presidential policy positions: good.
There was chatter here not long ago about some a version/vintage of Jeep Grand Cherokees being virtually bombproof. Saw some at Barrett-Jackson Friday that got us thinking. Can anybody remind me what I should be looking for?
I still haven’t found what I’m looking for…
Try searching where the streets have no name.
I can tell you this: the 4w drive on that vehicle was designed by Subaru. They tested it and figured out it was no good. Under strain it slips so they sold it to Chrysler. Chrysler put it into production. My son had one and sure as shit going up a steep hill in 4wd it started grinding and slipping. I dont know if they have changed the design or not since then.
I had a 1996 Cherokee Sport. I hated getting rid of that car.
WRT keto diet: I saw my doc last Thursday, after 5 months of eating (around) <50g-carb/day. Lab results compared to what I had done in June 2018 showed I knocked 31 points off my total cholesterol, 36 points off my glucose, and lowered my triglycerides…220 points. The latter likely being the 10 days of alcohol-abstinence I endured, pre-test.
I'm happy with the results.
Congrats!
Nice job, Tres! Always good to see real results. Most importantly, is Jugsy digging your lean and mean action?!?
After leaping from the wagon with aplomb (vacation and biz trip), it’s time to lock it down and get back to the program.
Jeep Grand Cherokees… Can anybody remind me what I should be looking for?
The older the better. Get the 360; lots and lots of torque. The one in my early ’70s J4000 pickup was impressive.
Then customize the hell out of it.
I had a 78′ Wagoneer, the Golden Eagle edition. 360 with qudra-track. It maybe got 10 mpg, and liked to grind tires down, but it was a beast.
The 4L I6 is bulett proof aside from a few exhaust manifold leaks from a crossover pipe.
Most will last for well over 200K
The early to mid 90’s Cherokees with the 4L fuel injected HO motor are still very well sought after. If you can find them without rust or modifications even better. Mine lasted for over 200K miles when I sold it for a car with better fuel economy for my commute. I know of others from friends that kept them for 350K of daily driver and mountain trail miles.
The NE salt rusting killed most before the engines died.
That straight six was great.
I honestly believe kids are being ruined by poor education standards. This is retarded:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m55yc98p4os
Pay those teachers more!
It’s a little like them saying: Hm. I made 9% last year and 8% prior to last years. But this year I made only 6%. Shouldn’t it be 23% bro? Are you stealing from me?
I try not to be a food snob, but this is up there with individual pudding cups as just WTF are people thinking buying that.
*looks at Costco ruby red grapefruit cups on counter, sticks tongue out at Tulip*
Turned on Meet the Idiots a few minutes ago. ROOSHUROOSHUROOSHU!
Now one of the idjits is talking about some kids being mean to somebody. Snooty, I think he said.

Seriously, the fact that he doesn’t realize that he is dehumanizing the kids with that language… And then has the gal to say that they “look” dangerous.
Massive lawsuits should be forthcoming, but we know they won’t.
At least now we know to only judge people based on how they look. I’ll act accordingly
This story was posted at 10:23 last night by CNN, well after full video was making the rounds online:
That shit is straight propaganda.
It’s also always entertaining to see how quickly leftists can go to the noble savage trope.
There is also never a point in the full video where anyone says “build the wall”. But there are a bunch of times where people tell them to go back to Europe
chanting things like “Build the wall” and “Trump 2020.”
See it was like it. They didn’t necessarily say those things. Just things like it.
“Go back to Europe” is priceless. That kid was born here as were his parents and probably great-great grandparents. He needs to go back to Europe but anchor babies are A-Ok. We’ve all said it many times about the left and double standards…..
So, I’d betcha a Coke that at some point before going on the trip, a very-well-meaning adult told the students that they may meet counter-protestors who’d get in their faces and be argumentative, and try to make them look angry and combative. And that they told the kids something like:
“If somebody does that, you just need to stand there quietly and smile, and take it, and not let them make you angry.”
“our young African-Americans, who’d been preaching about the Bible nearby,”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
They’re Black Israelites, dummies.
Oh man. I thought left was mocking the boys because they didn’t beat the snot out of the guy with a bike lock.
People see what they want to see. A bunch of boisterous white boys hopping up and down triggered the media. A kid simply standing where his is and smiling triggered the media. An old POC pounding a drum in the face of a teenager triggered the media. It’s not even Rashomon. It’s Racistomon.
People see what they want to see.
Yup. Confirmation bias is 80% of life. The rest is “get the jerk.” Laws and principles rarely enter into anything.
I got up this morning and learned a lot about how to run a snowblower. Then went out and discovered that my Sunday morning breakfast place was closed on account of the storm.
Went through a couple hours of sleet, and now the snow has started again. Got enough food and booze to hole up like a bear, but since work will be open tomorrow, won’t be able to.
I’m snowed in by less than one inch of snow. I hang my proud northern head in shame. My landlord did not have snow in mind when he blacktopped our bobsled run of a driveway. Normally I’d just make something yummy to eat and start drinking. Unfortunately I’m remodeling the kitchen so food-prep is out. I also gave up booze for the next couple months so alcohol is out. Can’t work on the kitchen until I get a few things from the hardware store. Hmmmm……
I hear heroin is fun…
I mean, if you wanna ride, you should ride the white horse .
“our bobsled run of a driveway.”
I fail to see a problem, frankly.
Salt. The answer is salt. Of course this kind of temps and salt doesn’t work so good, providing a little grit and texture to your death slide.
Denier-in-Chief
Trump and others who deny climate change have cited cold temperatures and winter storms to dismiss global warming, but experts have noted there is a difference between the climate and weather.
In the winter, anyway. Heat waves are a completely different issue.
I look forward to an honest discussion from both sides of “climate ch–“.
LOL, almost got it out.
The left will attempt to destroy the economy with this crap, lying through their teeth all the way about the cost (titanic) and the impact (not even measurable) and the right will roll over for a belly rub. The rest of us will watch our life savings disappear.
Now they’re talking about that Buzzfeed story about Trump. They are so desperate to believe this idiotic nonsense it’s scary.
BuzzFeed. One bad story away from becoming Gawker 2.0
Then went out and discovered that my Sunday morning breakfast place was closed on account of the storm.
In Saratoga? WTF?
I know! I was very disappointed. They have the best fries er, “Belgian Frites” around. They’re a highlight of the weekend.
Weirdness – on the way to the grocery store I got pulled over by two police cruisers, even though I was going 5 under the speed limit.
Officer claimed that my license plate was for a Nissan Cube – and did I ever own a Nissan? Handed over the paperwork, license, etc.
And then he came back and apologized – turned out he entered my plate in incorrectly. I have a vanity plate and he entered an “I” instead of an “E” for the second vowel.
Still weird that a cop would decided to enter in my plate, even though I wasn’t doing anything unlawful. Or was it a BS reason to pull me over? ::shrugs::
Well, you were driving without his phone number.
Dammit – EF switched logins on me – but it was nice to have the her, the “family” lawyer, in the back in case things got dumb.
Drive around with tags that can be misentered in the DMV database like a thug, get pulled over and questioned like a thug.
Kidding aside, the police look upon the general population as “the other” and are suspicious of everyone. If one is behind you on the roadway, assume that your tags are being run, because that’s what they do. They look for things to catch and fine us for.
Or the trifecta of catch, fine, and incarcerate.
Do you look like someone who might do drugs? Could just be fishing.
2014 Mustang? On a Sunday morning? With two passengers and everyone bundled up for 0 degree weather? I suppose so if you squint hard enough with little piggy eyes.
Mustang
January in Michigan
Snowy/icy road
“Yeah, they must be hopped-up on goofballs”
/cop
I do consider a sports car, even the lowest and slowest version, a cop magnet. Something I call the “Mustang” tax, since derpy people tend to drive them. But I wanted something newer with a manual transmission, and something with a decent engine, which limits the options to BMW. Audi. Suburu WRX, pony cars, and Hondas. Or ?
That’s why I bought my 13 GT. Drove it all winter with all seasons and cable chains in the trunk if needed.
Sold it last year for a few reasons, none related to tha great car other than the lack of more that one passenger capacity.
Yeah, I love the new muscle cars. Just not enough room for our road trips. With her outfits, my photography stuff, our hiking stuff. Plus the occasional family things.
“Or? ”
GTI or Focus ST
Sorry hear that. I wonder how often that cops make that ‘mistake.’ Did you thank him for his service?
I just said: “No problem!” And rolled up my window and drove away.
You didnt pull the “I DONT ANSWER QUESTIONS AND THATS A LAWYER IN THE BACK, PIG!” routine that I always see on youtube ?
No I put my TSA line face on? Pleasantly bored.
And being the IT guy I am, I suggested he entered the plate incorrectly into his system. Turned out I was correct!
Pleasantly bored
That’s a solid choice. A fair read interpretation of my ticket face is “no worries, pal: little shit like you is just overhead to me.”
It’s great that I can largely laugh off run-ins with the constabulary now as mere inconvenience, but our county jail is indeed a tower of shit where I should not much care to spend the weekend, so, even for me, there’s a limit to the snark.
Bored is my usual response as well. Do you know how fast you were going? No idea.
I got a felony stop the exact same way back in like ’92. The neighbors actually filmed it, in case I got beat down. Then They wrote me a completely bogus ticket which got ALL of the facts wrong. I fought it and won.
I hate cops – so dealing with them in any way makes me nervous to some degree. Though nothing happened I still felt angry afterwards. And was afraid of a situation like your developing.
I used to have a few cop friends. Yeah, when they are on traffic duty they randomly enter plates looking for people with warrants or records. Nissan cube my ass, the cube owner probably had a warrant out for them. Failure to appear or some such.
Harbinger of impending doom, or interesting astronomical event?

Uffda. Getting the last two sprockets off shortly (hopefully). Then remove water pump. Then some parts cleaning and reassembly with a ton of new parts. All new timing chains and sprockets.
The more I think about it, the more I realize I’ve got a long way to go.

NewWife is taking down her huge Christmas stuff collection. I took down the outdoor lights the first January weekend with dry weather. I can’t wait to get this stuff back up in the attic so that the garage isn’t half full of empty boxes.
Many Voters Think Trump’s a Self-Made Man. What Happens When You Tell Them Otherwise?
. . . Trump received more than $413 million in today’s dollars from his father. . .
I’m amused by my redneck relatives who voted for the very stable genius because <a href="http://
” target=”_blank” >a guy who went to Wharton will take back the country from the elites.
I don’t care who people vote for, but the rationalizations are tiresome.
Many voters have apparently been hiding under a rock for the last 40 years.
Hell, I’ve been killing it with my PhD from Trump U.
Pretty sure that $413 million is a bullshit number. His father mostly supported him with loans, with the biggest number being from loans his father guaranteed. I guess you can call a loan “received” by the debtor, but it’s kinda misleading if it’s not qualified. The guarantee isn’t money “received” at all.
I guess it also depends on how you define “elites”. By some measures, especially economic, he is. By others, especially social/cultural, I don’t think so, as evidenced by his enemies.
Rationalizations by anyone are pretty much by definition not entirely aligned with the facts. The notion he pulled himself up by his bootstraps is absurd, as is the idea that his father gave him almost half a billion dollars.
probably so
I didn’t pay any more attention to the $400M than his counter-arguement of $1M; it would be interesting to see what his ROI is but not important enough for me to find the numbers myself. It’s fair to say that I’m simply content with something along the lines of “Trump is lying most of the time” which I believe is also fair even when he accidentally does something I agree with.
My larger point is that my relatives would be offended by the number no matter how small it is and would still tie themselves in knots to vote a way which they normally assert would offend their sensibilities; that part is permanently, constantly true.
I just don’t care. Name a poor guy who became president. They are all rich
Did he cut my taxes? Did he remove unreasonable restrictions from me and others? Did he appoint decent ish justices and department heads?
Well, that’s all I care about. I didn’t even vote for the guy. I voted against the interests of Christian bakers. He might get me vote next time, though, despite my aversion to team sports.
I just don’t care.
We agree here and just about all the time; my beef above was not with the facts, it’s with the rationalizations.
Not that it matters as a practical matter . . . except for the part where my toothless uncles start in on their narrative and their rationalizations. Much as Glibs enjoy pointing out every outrage in the MSM, which is fine, just understand that living in resist-the-#Resist world is also a constant buzzkill as well. . .
not that I’ve gone to more than two reunions in the past decade. And I hate statist SoCons, so I was already avoiding them. And I’m sure they don’t miss me much either other than: “wonder why the smart nephew never comes around?”

“Yelp Reviewers’ Authenticity Fetish Is White Supremacy in Action
According to a study of Yelp reviews for NYC restaurants, judging restaurants by “authenticity” tends to put non-white owners in a trap
I would know: I have read and studied 20,000 Yelp reviews — part of my thesis as a master’s student at New York University in the Food Studies program. I can tell you a lot about what I concluded about the depths of the internet, but I’ll start with this one: The word “authentic” in food reviews supports white supremacism, and Yelp reviews prove it. ”
https://ny.eater.com/2019/1/18/18183973/authenticity-yelp-reviews-white-supremacy-trap
Complete horseshit. Just one for example, there is expensive Chinese food anywhere you care to look in NYC. Apparently one thing she didn’t learn from her fancy education was to not do a study looking for the conclusions you’ve already drawn beforehand.
The problem with yelp is that all the grade profiles are the same normal (skewed high) distribution
because, no matter how horrible a joint is, there’s someone who thinks it’s good, more who won’t give anyone an F, and others who grade on a value curve; so that horrible meat-and-three in Homer Corner, SC still gets a 3.8 because 20 local retirees love the salisbury steak and salad bar for $7.99.
There’s no way for me to glean any real value from online reviews other than to read the pans and see if those folk were put off for the same sorts of reasons I’m put off.
A lot of restaurant pans – 1 star reviews – invariably start with the “I took my wedding party out to _restaurant or bar name_ and I didn’t get treated like a princess!”
Where a lot of men do the: “I didn’t get food poisoning? 4 or 5 stars!”
I review on yelp more than a little, and the scores I get consistently run 66% helpful, 33% funny. Proabably 100% of my “funny” are 1 or 2 star slams.
I would imagine you could use Yelp reviews to “prove” anything you wanted and it wouldn’t take dropping a few hundred thousand at Prog U to learn how to do it.
I quit at “Masters of Food Studies”.
But he’s a Master!
“I want my two dollars.”

Donald Trump: Master Troll
And the supposedly “smart set” falls for it again and again.
Há! I got that sext a few weeks back on a Sunday evening, it screamed “spam”. I didn’t text back.
I have read and studied 20,000 Yelp reviews — part of my thesis as a master’s student at New York University in the Food Studies program. Authentic frontier gibberish.
Regarding the beer naming discussion yesterday. I recall in the early 90s while visiting San Antonio – seeing a wide variety of T-shirts advertising Bear Whiz beer – which I was lead to believe was an actual beer (I was in middle school at the time, so I don’t recall investigating further). It’s hard to believe there are similar brands having issues 20+ years later.
Separate question for Lachowsky – I’ve mentioned before that I include “crane operator” on my list of future retraining options (thanks to the GI Bill). Would an employer look favorably at seeing this on a resume for a new hire: https://www.towercraneschoolphoenix.com/ or https://apcranetraining.com/ presuming you have the full certification and license? Or are they considered the equivalent of diploma mills without real practical value?
Thanks.
Bear Whiz was a creation of Firesign Theatre. Someone then ran with it.
“It’s in the water, son. That’s why it’s yellow.”
You’ll be back in chains, soon.
One is called the “child of the storm.” Another is “the crown jewel.” The third was dubbed “the voice of justice.”
They are the three great laws of the civil rights movement: the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act of 1968.
A new conservative bloc on the Supreme Court though may soon treat them as something else: outdated “racial entitlements” that need to be put back in their place.
That’s the dreaded future some experts envision for these landmark laws now that Justice Brett Kavanaugh has joined the Supreme Court. They warn that, for the first time, the high court has five firmly conservative judges who were groomed to dismantle the legal legacy of these laws, which have stood for 50 years.
“They will chip, chip away at these laws until there is nothing left,” says Carol Anderson, author of “One Person, No Vote: How Voter Suppression Is Destroying Our Democracy.”
“I could see the court tilting further and further to the right until we end up with a dystopian society.”
The sky is falling! We’re all gonna die!
“A new conservative bloc on the Supreme Court though may soon treat them as something else: outdated “racial entitlements” that need to be put back in their place.”
I’ll take “Things that are never going to happen for $800, Alex.”
Unfortunately.
Speaking of beer names…
Some female person got all snotty and bent out of shape over the “Fugly” beer tap at my local watering hole. (I can’t remember who brews it.)
“I’ll never come back.”
“Bye.”
Men can’t be Fugly?
