As far as the store’s meat selection, it is quite nice. I will probably mostly buy meat (and anything I can freeze to keep longer) and non-perishables while doing other grocery shopping elsewhere. Before today I hadn’t been into one since I was in my teens. It seems like they do more these days. They have everything. It is like a buy-in-bulk Wal-mart combined with a Lowe’s.
If you are doing a lot of meat freezing get yourself a vacuum sealer if you don’t already have one.

Now that LA has become a sanctuary city I think all the new arrivals ought to be bused to LA and dropped off, after they have been initially processed, etc, with the instructions that if they leave and get caught out of the city limits they will be returned to country of origin, quickly. It’ll make the locals happy to be able to share and the rest of the folks can rest easier. Other sanctuary cities/states could also be included.

13 years ago, when I got out of the Marines, my wife and I for a time rented a condo in Orange Beach AL from her parents. The building was almost all vacation rentals. We were one of the only permanent residents. Being a beach community, there was an influx of out of town workers in the summer months, many of them foreign. One night, a weeknight, there was an incredibly loud party in the place above ours. Went upstairs to complain that it was 2 am and I needed to be at work in 5 hours, and come to find out the place was full of hot young Russian chicks. They all worked at a water park over in Gulf Shores, the owner of which had rented the condo and had like 10 of these girls living there. Sadly, while they frequently walked around not wearing much, they were never topless.
Chip, the wife is enamored of the OB/GS area for possible retirement. I love it myself, but don’t know that I want to relocate there, from Texas, when I’m no longer working.
Did you like living there, and, was it relatively cheap for beach living? IF….if we were to do that, I think we’d move further inland (North), and not be on the water, per se.
Still-interested in any anecdotes/whatnot you could share about living there.
We did like it there, and intended to stay in Baldwin County long term. Like you, further from the water though – couldn’t afford GS/OB, so we looked around Lillian, Elberta, Loxley. My job ended up getting transferred from Foley to Pensacola, so we ended up buying there instead to my regret- Baldwin County is so much nicer than the Pensacola area, most of which is kinda crappy and run down. Pensacola’s job market sucked with cutbacks on the Navy base, though, and after I was laid off I couldn’t find anything decent so we left. The biggest problem with the area is employment,but if you’re retiring there then it doesn’t matter.
The beaches are tremendous. Gentle surf, sugar sand, warm water. Can’t beat em. Summers can be a bitch with all of the vacationers clogging up the streets – traffic gets bad. There isn’t all that much to do besides the beach, although the amphitheater at The Wharf gets some big musical acts, mostly country/classic rock though. Wasn’t a problem for me, I’m a beach guy, but just saying.
Now, that’s based on 10+ years ago. We moved to Pcola in 2009 and out of the region in 2011. Gone back a couple of times to visit the in-laws, who still own that condo and spend half the year down there, and it’s gotten much more built up than when we moved there. My FiL was telling us recently that the Creek Indians are building this huge complex off Rt 59 with a hotel, condos, water park, and trying to get a casino approved.
If I were moving back there (and if I were ever offered a good job in Mobile, I would) my personal choice would be one of the Mobile Bay-side towns like Daphne, Fairhope, or Spanish Fort. Very nice, upscale towns, not touristy, although they are a little ways from the beach (20-30 mins). In the central part of the county are sleepy little country towns like Robertsdale, Summerdale, Magnolia Springs, Elberta. Foley used to be that way but Gulf Shores kinda of bled up 59 to the point that they are kind of the same place now. There are a couple of very wealthy little towns on the water of Wolf’s Bay like Perdido Beach which are lovely but very expensive.
Overall the cost of living is higher than, say, Pcola or Mobile but not too bad for a beach area. Housing away from the water, for a decent house in around 2000 sf you can probably find something in the $250k neighborhood. Food is a bit expensive. We used to try to buy our groceries across the line in Florida because there’s no sales tax on food. When we moved over to Florida we’d prefer to buy our gas in Alabama for the same logic, gas taxes were much lower there.

Thanks for that. I’ve told my wife of my concerns about a move like that, and, I think staying in Texas is what will probably happen. But, I plan on showing her this, so we can plan.
We were there back in ’16 for a day during an anniversary trip to Biloxi, and for a week in either ’13 or ’14. Not a trip we can make often, but she really fell for the place (I was convinced well before she came along). I had thought that Dapne/Fairhope would be a better choice, and, even Foley. But, I think I saw what you mean about GS spreading to them. I don’t remember the grocery tax in OB, et al, so that surprises Texan me (Really, ‘Bama?). In fact, no state income tax me is rather worried about the possibility of retiring to a tax state, which is part of the “stay here” thing.
