In related news, the CW Black Lightning TV show went that way with one of their characters this week. The replacement principal in the school (white, put up metal detectors, and went zero tolerance for misbehavior) told off the secret identity of Black Lightning for assuming that the principal was privileged. Paraphrasing here, but it went along the lines of: “You look at me and just see me as white, you’re the real racist. My parents were heroin addicts. My father watched my mother die of an overdose when I was a child. I had to grow up on the streets. You were the son of a wealthy journalist. Which one of us was privileged?”

No. In fact Jefferson Pierce (the Black Lightning’s secret identity, and the former principal at the same school) stood up for the principal and accepted that he might have a point. I was shocked as hell, especially because the setup for the meeting was that Jefferson could get his principal job back if he threw the new principal under the bus for handling a student protest in an insensitive manner. That earned the show a shit ton of respect for me. It almost makes up for the Supergirl wokeness this season, and Arrow’s terrible gun control episode.

This season they introduced a new character who is trans. That’s fine. She’s also an alien crossbreed from two alien parents… OK. The character’s mother has a special power called dreaming, which is passed on from mother to daughter, fine. The new character had a younger sister who had trained her whole life to get the dreaming power, but it went over to the trans character… because she had a daughter’s soul.
The fuck! Drop that it’s passed down to daughters, or say that it usually goes to the daughter, and it’s fine. Just call it magic, and it’s fine. Say it’s a genetic power passed down to daughters, that somehow survives being a hybrid with another alien and goes by the person’s soul? *sigh*

Pretty sure if you control for the whole “children born out of wedlock” thing, the racial difference in IQ and academic achievement metrics drops drastically. Possibly even to the point of not being statistically relevant, but I don’t have any stats knowledge.

Darkness at Noon is terribly underrated. I’ve read Animal Farm and 1984 as well, and liked them both, but found Darkness at Noon more powerful since it was rooted in actual history.

Well my son is home from school and suggested watching Tremors (the first one).
Bonus story: The first time that my lovely wife saw the movie, she was scared enough that she had to put her back against the wall and slink out of the room. I kept telling her it was a comedy but she didn’t believe me. Years later she can watch Tremors after we watched some old Hammer and Amicus horror movies.

The girlfriend has finally accepted that some comedy horror films are good (Cabin in the Woods, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Army of Darkness, Little Evil, The Babysitter), but still doesn’t like the so bad their good ones (Piranha [2010], Teeth, Tusk, Zombeavers). It was a struggle to get her to watch some of the classics, but she’s finally realized that most slasher films aren’t scary. They’re morality plays made for teens in the 80’s.
