Sorry…not really feeling it this morning. So there will be a lack of witty banter, and you will have to supply the music links. Just pretend you are in a 1980s grocery store that stocks naught but Generics:
- Choo-hoo causes trouble in EU, not just California.
- “But what damage might he have caused my horses?” Replaying a Tale of Two Cities in the UK?
- HAHAHAHA. AAF dodges a bullet.
Do try and stay away from being banned today, mkay?
I seem to recall a generic Beer
I remember seeing it on the shelf at a SuperK back in the 90’s. But the real question, was it made with corn or rice? That’s a big deal now.
In the 90s? Corn syrup.
Tall Cans! already? Alright…
Yusef and Tres bait.
…
Wait, I do have some .5L Krombacher cans at home. Guess I am in the TALL CANS club now!
Yup. And there was generic “Lite Beer.”
If that’s not going to turn into a picture of a water bottle/can, I am disappoint.
Sorry, not sorry.
Haven’t seen cans that big since I clicked on Mrs. Splosive’s link.
They’re only twelve ounce cans. Wait, is the standard Japanese can smaller than 12 oz?
Cans and weiners are smaller in Japan is what they say
Dunno in oz, but the standard Japanese can is flat.
They outlawed carbonation too? Was it some sort of Green policy?
-2 daikon thighs
Funny you know that, NA.
I took a six-week Japanese class taught by a nun. I have been told that the little vocabulary I have is more suited to a child. I think she taught me that expression. But it might have been from one of either kenpo or kendo classes when someone was complaining about how painful seiza is for those of us that grew up with chairs.
So what does the expression mean?
Daikon radish. Means the gal has thick legs.
@Not Adahn
You took kenpo? What strain?
Shorin-ryu
Pixelated?
350ml. But there’s also a stubby can size too.
Those tiny cans make my hands look hyuuuge.
What I like is those Japanese ones still have the small openings, not the gaping wide mouths in the US.
Pedo
JAPANESE ONES NOT KNOW STEVE SMITH!!
Now that’s how you euphemism.
*Hi five*
Now that is fascinating. Both look like they are steel cans, but the one with the multiple fonts (why are they spending money on such frivolity?) has the old-style pull tab. The one on the right would have to have been and extremely limited production run.
My dad drank it sometimes.
I drank this occasionally in HS.
The (Vons or Albertson?) version I remember was a canned by the same company that made Pearl. It was pretty bad, but not as bad as Meister Brau or Black Label.
Th HS go-to beer was Lucky Lager, because they had puzzles under the bottle caps.
My FiL used to buy generic beer.
And when he came over to my house, he would rummage through the fridge for a beer or grab a bottle of booze and pour himself a large stiff drink.
Me: Ah, you know that fifth cost me $50
Him: …
The Scots are a thrifty bunch.
Here’s the *current years*’s version of generic beer:
Good Ass Beer
I remember Beer beer, but not as pictured above
I thought they made that stuff up for flicks like “Repo Man” – didn’t know they legit sold it that way.
I loved the “Food” cans in Repo Man.
“Put it on a plate, son, you’ll enjoy it more.”
“Can’t get any better than this, Mom.”
“HAHAHAHA. AAF dodges a bullet.”
I know you’re being snarky, but honestly Kap would have gotten at least a few more eyes on that league, which is what they need. I am sick of hearing about him though. He decided to piss off a huge chunk of the customer base and then bitches that his employer doesn’t want him to do that anymore. What an idiot.
Not $20M worth of eyes. He is old, out of game shape and hasn’t throw a pass in a game in years.
No one in the AAF has really played in years.
They have a lot of just finished college kids, UFAs and just have been cuts.
This will be what NFL Europe was, except people will probably watch it.
He wouldn’t get $20M if he was in the best shape of his life and had no PR baggage. Guy seems to be off his meds.
Well if you don’t really want to play, but want act like you want to. Make crazy demands, when they say no. You throw your hands up and say “I tried!”
I think this is accurate.
Besides, wasn’t his performance already prettt weak the last year before the Kneel?
Yes it was, and that’s what really pisses me off about all this hero promotion. Colin Kaepernick was riding the bench when he suddenly decided to take a brave stand for civil rights. He was heading straight towards being a perpetual back-up or placeholder, something like an RG3 or a Sam Bradford. As I recall the 49ers were about to cut him when he suddenly propelled himself into an important national conversation about race…kinda like someone in Chicago recently, come to think of it…
I mean, there’s also the part where he was so dumb he turned down a trade and a paycut from the Broncos. He was just so damn sure someone else would give him more.
He has Mark Gerragos representing him, running around shilling the conspiracy story to anyone who will put him on the air. They are working the public opinion angle really hard, hoping for a big settlement with the NFL.
I don’t see how it could happen, since he was already deep on the bench before any of this started. And it isn’t like he got benched for the next Tom Brady.
They already managed to parlay that fame into a fat Nike contract. This is just another publicity angle. They wouldn’t have wanted him to actually play – it would ruin the “he’s easily one of the 15 best quarterbacks” angle. He could have gone to Canada at any point and tried to make it. But flopping on a small stage would wreck his case.
He could come up here and pay for one of the Roughrider teams.
Hamilton or GTFO.
But Hamilton tickets are expensive and nearly impossible to get.
There should be a gaze narrowing here.
Masoli beat out Manziel for a job. And it wasn’t close.
I wonder if Kaepernick could play in the CFL with his style. You have to be pretty accurate with those three downs thing.
Well now you absolutely know what Kap is after. And it’s not playing football.
Kap wouldn’t have dodged a bullet with Che in Cuba
To be fair, maybe they can get the other driver treated at a real hospital, wince the NHS treatment for a broken wrist is “leave them on a waiting list until the bones knit on their own”
LOL, Kaepernick wants $20M to be a mediocre QB with a PR problem in a tiny league.
Good luck with that.
Maybe it was a ‘stop bothering me’ quote?
Either way, this works out best for everyone. He can continue to focus on his twitter profile and hopefully soon, we won’t ever see him in the news again.
In keeping with the generic theme, this is the official music link
See, I knew the commentariat would cover the music.
A commentariat cover band you say?
Hrmm…
Could have at least gone with this.

That was inspired!
I was thinking more like this.
First he bans someone. Now no banjos for morning links. Wake up sheeple!! The glibe have been taken over by the Swiss!!
You lost me at ‘sheeple’.
Unoriginal, but mandatory
You don’t know how unoriginal 😉
Swiss has the secret ultra-high-speed connection to the glibserver room.

I didn’t ban anyone. TPTB have to agree completely to do that. And only SP wields the mighty BANHAMMER…it is kind of like Mjölnir.

Are there TPS reports that need to be filled out?
Pbbt. You really think these guys are capable of putting a cover sheet on a report?
Yeah….cyto. I’m going to need you to come in this weekend and polish catbutts. Yeah, that’d be great.
It’s funny because we’ve all seen the same movie….
Great. Now Switzy is stuck as Gary Cole in my mind’s eye. I’m picturing Lumbergh giving narrowed gazes with a cup of coffee.
So SP is Beta Ray Bill? Or more like Jane Foster?
I envisioned the banhammer more along these lines:

That girl will have a hell of a time when she’s 60. Good thing we get to look at her when she’s 20.
Remember the “Vast, Right-Wing Conspiracy”?
Well, here’s some evidence of a cabal of a different bent:
ABC news ran a ton of stories about racists in MAGA hats shouting “this is MAGA country” while beating a gay black actor from TV, including use of a noose and bleach. They even have a long form sympathetic interview with the actor as he “speaks out for the first time”.
But they didn’t cover the story when their own affiliate has multiple sources within the Chicago PD saying it might be a hoax. Surprising, given that this is an ABC affiliate.
But that’s not the part I’m talking about.
This morning the ABC News website has Trump threatening to declare an emergency as their number one story. The number two story? Some random DUI suspect yells racist stuff while getting arrested.
Yup. That’s the second biggest story nationally this morning. Some random drunk yells something while getting arrested.
Go ahead and explain how this is anything other than propaganda that is designed to divide the country on racial lines. They have a story that fits a real narrative – one of their biggest stories of the last week or so is potentially yet another hoax racist attack – but they ignore it and scour the nation to find anything with a “white people are racist” angle that they can substitute.
This is a pretty deep dig – finding some random DUI from a week ago to promote to national prominence. There really isn’t anything beyond “Trump is a tyrant who is going to violate the constitution” that is more important. Trump #1, racist rant by drunk getting arrested #2.
Yeah…… vast right wing conspiracy…..
Trust, once lost, cannot easily be regained.
I’d say that most of the news media didn’t just abuse the public trust, they shot it in the head, burned it and salted the earth so it can never again grow back.
I was thinking exactly that last night. They lost the plot. Do they know? When you look at those anchors all pretty and suave, are they aware people are onto to their shtick and just play along? Either way, how can they regain any trust lost at this point? Judging by that idiotic WaPo ad, they seem to not care and are doubling down.
You WILL submit. The idea of if journalism disappears, so to democracy is arrogant and absurd.
Violent attackers might yell lots of somewhat common words that sorta sound like “MAGA”. “Maga” is probably the least common.
What’s the frequency, Kenneth?
Dis is Manga country!
Maybe those Nazi Nigerians actually yelled Dis is faggot country
MAGA, please.
Somebody had a few drinks after getting banhammered last night.
Guffaw…
Wow, talk about a location joke. That’s really, really local.
I just assumed it was Mel Gibson again.
The whole Smollett thing is like a really shitty episode of Law and Order. It’s so trite that even Dick Wolf wouldn’t touch it.
I dunno. They did a gamergate episode that was so cringy it ended up being hilarious.
The path that show has traveled is amazing. In one of the early episodes, Sam Waterson has a scene with a black lawyer where he tells her (paraphrasing) that if she wanted to know why racism was a problem she should look in the mirror.
Of course a random, racist drunk is indicative of all MAGA voters, but a Bernie-bro shooting up a Republican baseball practice is – wait – what was I talking about?

“raise old Glory there and cause an international incident”
Whether you mean that literally or euphemistically I think you’re good either way.
I read the the dead thread last night – most importantly I want to know your eggplant joke that got your wife in trouble.
I love dad gags. As gaijin trying to speak Japanese I can usually get an honest laugh out of them that a native speaker would be greeted with “samui”.
However, one thing I have been absolutely unable to explain to my Japanese friends is American sarcasm. And given how indirect it can be I would think that British wit would be even harder for them grasp.
Ugh. Ok. Before I took a bite of the eggplant, I said loudly, “Itadakinasu”.
Samui!
It works with pears, too.
Yes, yes it does…
“I have been absolutely unable to explain to my Japanese friends is American sarcasm. ”
Maybe they’re just being sarcastic?
They honestly just don’t get it.
Much the same way that insults in Japanese work by changing either the social status of the insulting person or the person being insulted.
Any time I ask my friends if I’m correctly making anything more than a 100% obvious (hypothetical) insult in Japanese I always fail.
“They honestly just don’t get it. ”
I think that was the reason for the second bomb.
Japanese use the word for “irony” when they are talking about sarcasm because the concept really doesn’t exist in Japanese culture.
YES! So much this. Sometimes irony and sarcasm intersect, but not always.
Japanese people usually can understand the intersection, but straight out sarcasm is really tough to explain.
I have a number of my original puns in Japanese – a couple that many Japanese actually think are funny. I tend to trot one or two of them out when somebody in a social setting insists on dumbing down their Japanese for me – kinda show that I actually do know the language.

War Crime?
An update on my previously mentioned German relative who fought and died in WWI. He may or may not have partaken in what may or may not have been a war crime at the time. On August 20th his regiment the 8th Bavarian Reserve was moving through Dalhain, France. The citizens provided them with water, however French soldiers provided them with gun fire from attics and second story windows. So the 8th encircled the village and bombarded the city with artillery. Apparently the citizens of the town are still pissed about it, given the picture on the town’s Wikipedia page is from the aftermath of shelling on that day. It’s unclear if that destruction in the picture was a result of the encirclement or of other fighting.
Side note I’ve found a lot of great material on the battles the 6th army partook in. I’m currently reading through “The First Battle of World War I Alsace Lorraine” by Karl Deuringer. He breaks down the battle to the micro level. That’s where I found the info above.
I am not surprised. Everybody thinks that Canadians are polite and fair-minded but our troops had a vicious reputation in both wars regarding treatment of prisoners that fell into their hands. I can believe it, I’ve been to many a pit party in my youth. Rural Canadians are not to be fucked with.
Everybody thinks that Canadians are polite and fair-minded…
“Everybody” must have never seen a hockey game.
“Everybody” seems to believe that that shit stays on the ice.
My national guard battalion’s predecessor regiment was nicknamed “Bloody Butchers” by the Japanese.
My BIL’s father fought in WWII for Italy. He said the Americans were wonderful soldiers. When asked about Canadians he invoked the ‘if you have nothing good to say’ adage.

Trump Is Making ‘Socialism’ Sound Pretty Good
And in any case, Democrats are not planning to seize the means of production anytime soon.
Making it sound good to whom? Campus activists and those who read the NYT opinion section are not representative of the nation as a whole.
Those Democrat policies are socialist though. Is telling the truth demonizing?
Of course.
Yertle’s response was pretty epic. “Let’s put it to a vote!”
I shake my damn head once more.
When you ask many of those kids who are open to socialism if they’re willing to pay more to make it happen they balk
Of course, like it says in the Communist Manifesto:
Or something like that, it’s like a hundred years old.
They don’t have anything to pay. They’ll be net takers until they get a little older, and then…
Had conservatives called these ideas “fascist” it wouldn’t have been demonization at all.
*facepalm*
These retard asshole opinionists in these shitty papers. You would think they would have learned having sided with Nazis and commies back in the day.
But nope.
Fucken nauseating how evil they are with their literary caca.
See, I would have said that our nouveau democratic (and Democrat) socialists are making Trump sound pretty good.
Specifically, in their vehement opposition to the Obama administration, conservatives narrowed “socialism” down to virtually any attempt to intervene in the economy on behalf of the broad public. The effort to save the American car industry? Socialist. Regulated markets to purchase health insurance? Socialist. Market-based measures for reducing carbon emissions? Also socialist.
Actually those types of market interventions are more fascistic in nature.
Libertarian moment?

short term or long term?
Long term, invest in British stocks, especially if they go with the 0 tariff plan.
I predict that over twenty years, it will be provide between a 4% and 10% rate of return.
Short term in the toilet though or no or little effect?
The only people that should care about that answer are people with a professional interest in it. People with a professional interest in it don’t (or shouldn’t) need rando’s on the internet providing their uninformed guess.
Playing the market short term is a fool errand. If you want to gamble, there are way more entertaining ways to do it. If you want to flush your money down the toilet, and least a hooker will jerky you off.
I’m well aware that trying to predict short term peaks and valleys is a crap shoot and that accepting financial advice from people on the internet is crazy. I’m just curious as to the short-term implications if anyone has any insight, that’s all.

Antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea is scary as fuck. Antibiotic-resistance in general.

This Smollett thing is kind of depressing even though I called it fairly accurately. All you have to do is assume the absolute worst motivations imaginable in people you don’t know and you’ll be right way more often than not.
What’s your angle?
Here’s mine. He got punched by his BF at the bar and fell into a self pity spiral and came up with this idiotic idea to claim he was attacked. Not really Munchhausen’s, more like Magahausen’s.
I’d say he had his associates muss him up a bit so he could concoct a sympathetic story to get his name out there and get roles. If it worked out right he’d be the brave downtrodden hero that fought back against racist thugs. Who wouldn’t want to give a part to that guy?
Sadly, I think you are on target.
His associates would need to continue to shut up, though, which is a hard thing to do.
Frankly, you don’t have to stop with people you know.

Thanks, 75 years and still no clue what it means!
To most people, it’s a pejorative (as Orwell notes), it needs no meaning any more than “fucker” or “asshole” need a meaning. When pressed, the casual user will retreat from the bailey of fascist = bad to the motte of fascist = Nazi but of course most do not know what the Falange was or that Mussolini wasn’t a Hitler clone (and came up with fascism first), nor could they identify much about the history of Japan pre-1945 apart from its alliance with the Nazis and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Don’t even attempt to bring up South America, as few enough know who Pinochet was, or could tell you what a right-Peronist was, etc.
Then there are certain elements which are common to many if not all fascist regimes, like the use of paramilitary forces, absorbing those forces into the state once in power, etc. which get lumped in with things like making popular appeals or talking about returning to traditions that are shared by many other kinds of political philosophies and practices as well.

Best punk band name, ever.
I was seated next to Zander Schloss on a flight from Tampa to LAX back in 1990(?). I had, 2 nights earlier, seen them at Janus Landing and he was kind enough to let me gush like a fanboy, sign my tour shirt, and give me some band swag. A right fine fellow.

I’ve seen Fear several times. The first time was at the now long-gone Foothill in Long Beach. My friends and I had nothing better to do so we went really early and were having beers at the bar when who should walk up and grab a beer than Lee Ving. That was fun.

This ‘secret plan’, as it has ironically been called throughout its extensive media coverage, is supposed to be considering the viability of numerous different policy directions intended to offset the economic armageddon which mainstream pundits so widely expect to result from a no-deal Brexit.
Now we’re getting somewhere.
We need more explicit recognition of the “Change is always and everywhere bad” news coverage we have come to expect from the legacy media.

TEAR IT DOWN!
O’Rourke’s comments came in response to Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) asking him: “If you could snap your fingers and make El Paso’s border wall disappear, would you?”
“Because this DHS graph shows that when the wall was built, illegal crossings dropped significantly,” Crenshaw added.
O’Rourke made the comments on MSNBC’s “All In With Chris Hayes” on Thursday while on the border.
“If you could, would you take the wall down now?” Hayes asked. “Knock it down?”
“Yes, absolutely,” O’Rourke answered. “I would take the wall down.”
O’Rourke’s comments come after his rally on Monday night in El Paso where he claimed that walls kill people.
“With the eyes of the country upon us, all of us together are going to make our stand, here in one of the safest cities in the United States of America — safe not because of walls, but in spite of walls,” O’Rourke said. “We treat each other with dignity and respect. That is the way we make our community and our country safe.”
“Walls do not save lives,” O’Rourke added. “They end lives.”
That position of wanting to tear down existing barrier is at least logically consistent. The rest is just ignorant (walls kill people?) and hypocritical (i’d wager his billionaire wife’s estate(s?) is surrounded by a wall of some sort.
But he’s soooooo Dreamy!
He reminds me of those abused kids that used to be on the covers of my buddy’s sister’s Teen Beat magazines.

Hey! We’re perfectly serviceable gardeners as long as we don’t try to gro potatoes.
It’s actually kind of amazing to me that the media was able to write puff piece after puff piece about this guy while conveniently leaving that out every time.

Beto==McCain?
And Kerry.
I wonder when the last time was that he went over to Ciudad Juarez – day or night.
Even the people I grew up there in El Paso – almost all of Mexican heritage – either do not cross that border or do it only when there is no other choice (going to see relatives, etc.).
Growing up 40-50 years ago it was no big deal. Even 35 years ago I would walk across by myself on occasion.
My point is that Beto here is being entirely disingenuous and expects that 99% of those who read about this don’t have any idea how dangerous it is on the other side of that wall (not everywhere but definitely where he is talking about it).
That really hurts. In the late 1980s, while enjoying my time at Bliss, walking over was a regular occurrence. Juarez was often declared off-limits, for weeks at a time, to US service members because of various incidents but the crossing itself was fairly painless* and quite busy.
*Once upon a time, we were told by US CBP that we were far too drunk and being far too
combativeboisterous and boyishly charming to be allowed back into the USA and we had to sleep it off down Olde Mexico way.My neighbor has relatives in Juarez. They don’t go out at night at all.
“Yes, absolutely,” O’Rourke answered. “I would take the wall down.”
Its the only honest response for an Dem who has declared walls immoral.
Cocaine Mitch needs to call for a vote on a resolution to eliminate enforcement of the Southern border, including the elimination of ICE and the destruction of existing barriers.
Reactionary Rockism: The Dangerous Obsession with “Authenticity” in Indie Rock
uh… is the music any good?
Obviously not, or they wouldn’t have to shame people into listening to it.
Diet Cig – OK, but nothing That Dog and a few other bands did in the late-90s
Snail Mail – Alvvays cover band with a little bit more Pixies thrown in (aka tremulous vocals over quiet-LOUD-quiet)
Sheer Mag – terrible, just terrible, post-ironic blues metal
Vagabon – essentially a gimmick act, a black woman fronting a bog-standard late-2010s indie band. (Also, stop mis-spelling words for band names, people)
I like Alvvays but they have a cover band already?!
It was just a sarcastic jab. But the singer does have that sort of dream pop creaminess to her voice. And she stole Molly’s hair.
Ah, OK. TBH it wouldn’t surprise me, the way time keeps passing me by ever faster these days.
And, purely as a side note, I’ve always gotten the feeling that if you asked Molly out, when you got the restaurant, you’d find her blurry friend with the glasses waiting there for you instead.
(This literally happened to me once in 1986.)
Snail Mail got hyped to shit by the indie press because she’s gay and woke. I’m not sure if that proves or disproves the point the author of that load of drivel was trying to make.
I listen to the local college station and although there is a lot of good stuff there is a shit load of capable bands fronted by really bad singers. No tone, no pitch, no nothing. Singers used to be a dime a dozen.
I’ve noticed a lot of modern bands have the vocals buried low in the mix. Or whispery female singers with no dynamic range. The instrument playing can be fantastic but if I can’t hear the lyrics or get annoyed by the singer, it’s a no sale.
Also a lack of melodic hooks.

So what you’re saying is you’re ready for the shoegaze revival?
One of my favorite 90s groups – Moose – was called shoegaze. Never understood why.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auaHORc7ZIY
It became a buzzword in the ’90s, so every britpop band that played with a little extra reverb got called “shoegaze”. MBV and Slowdive are the genre prototypes, and literally embody everything you’ve just described as disliking.
I liked Slowdive for a few weeks… and then just stopped listening to the CDs. Boredom? Dunno.
Oddly enough I do like some “post-rock” which doesn’t even have any vocals but is more like orchestral rock music.

“A big part of the recent shift in indie has been toward the sincere collective action of movements like feminism”
So wuss rock then.
Back in the 70’s it was chicken-rock
I guess that’s why I don’t find any of the new stuff to be worth a shit.
Oh for crying out loud…..god forbid that actual rock still exists anywhere. No, we must crush the last vestiges of it in the cracks where it currently takes shelter until all music is shitty, vapid pop crap because white supremacy or something.
This is the most cringe worthy thing I’ve read in some time.

PS: Woke music is just as shitty as woke anything else. When you prioritize politics, artistic content takes a back seat.
It’s indistinguishable from the Contemporary Christian Music market, honestly (and I know whereof I speak). Like if you’re channel surfing in any given city you can instantly pick out the CCM station. Woke indie is exactly the same way.
*grumbles about the shittiness of contemporary Christian music and how it leaks into the rest of the church*
My wife listens to some of it. I can’t stand it, I find it completely devoid of musical value.
Hank Hill, laying down some truth.
Damn it man.
/kicks rock
The wisdom of Hank Hill lives on.
You both beat me to it, I just had the sense to refresh first.
I saw Casting Crowns in concert, my wife wanted tickets. They are good live.
Generally, I agree with you.
I see contemporary Christian as a discount version of pop music. There are a few good songs and artists, but they’re surrounded by a whole bunch of crap.
I met Lauren Daigle before she got big. Her agent(?) used to be the music director at our church before he move to Nashville. That girl has some pipes! However, most of her songs are an attempt to clone Adele (which she can do half decently) rather than make creative and genuinely good music.
It’s targeted for 14 year old girls. Why? Because 14 year old girls turn into 26 year old moms, and 26 year old moms are who motivate family to come to church.
Granted, more people wouldn’t have to be dragged to church if the music was half decent and the preaching wasn’t dumbed down to a middle school level.
Was having lunch with my pastor the other day, and he was talking about the “niche” other pastor’s were targeting. For one, he said their decibel level was driving everyone over 30 away.
Agreed. I can’t say I get a lot out of most sermons. I’m finishing the thoughts and coming up with the references on the spot. The first time goes through the stuff, the second time (as he likes to repeat himself) I might be coloring with my daughter.
I did have a pastor that did some high level thought preaching. There were less than 10 people in the church that were keeping pace with him.
So what’s a pastor to do? Have to go to where the people are, figuratively and dumb it down.
I’ve had a similar discussion with our worship pastor. He feels like he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. Cut back the contemporary songs and the core demographic (the 40 something soccer moms, of all people) start to complain. Cut back the hymns and other demographics start to complain.
We have the added complications of not having enough congregational musical talent to be able to do a decent contemporary service and being a tri-lingual church, we need songs that are translated in Spanish and mandarin.
So what’s a pastor to do? Have to go to where the people are, figuratively and dumb it down.
*nods solemnly*
If I were Sr. Pastor for the day, I’d structure the standard Sunday so that there was corporate worship, but no sermon. The entire church would split into groups of 15 or so and go study in a group appropriate to their level of understanding and their season of life. Then, after 45 minutes, reconvene for a quick (5 minute) summary and communion.
The early church did something similar. Churches were small, and new members were expected to go through catcechetical training before they were allowed in to the main group.
We have something kinda like that as an option now (there are classes during all but the earliest service), but its so easy to do the lazy thing and just go zone out during the sermon.
Our church just has a separate contemporary service. Traditional at 8 and 11, contemporary at 9:45. I much prefer traditional, so of course 9:45 is what the wife wants.

Hey now, the Low prices are a given. besides that, what has Amazon ever done for us.
I’m against special deals, but Amazon is one of the largest tax collection (if not the largest) organizations in the world.
If government had to collect its own sales taxes and withholding, it would rapidly go broke.
Thankfully SCOTUS turned every business in America into the tax collector for all 50 states.
I still can’t believe how little attention that utter fucking abortion of a ruling got.
It’s a largely ignored part (by the general public) of business in modern America.
Businesses collect sales taxes, collect withholding taxes, implement regulations, limit consumer choices per the government, all under the threat of fines and/or jail time.

I bet if we proposed a flat tax and framed in it a way to say fuck Amazon, the left would vote for it.
Isn’t the corporate tax already flat? (I really don’t know)
I have no idea. Maybe one day when LJW Inc. is well established I’ll find out.
It is a flat 21%. I assume LJW meant flat tax with limited deductions?

Same way guns do, I guess.
If they work as advertised and keep poor people in shithole countries more of said poor people will be killed in said shithole countries.
Just let ’em all in!
I’m not saying that we should or shouldn’t let people in, only suggesting one answer to the ‘how do walls kill people’ question. I don’t actually personally buy it, but if you accept Trump’s premises it is one that can inferred..
I actually agree with what you’re saying about what they are saying in regards to what he is saying. Well said.
Or look into the kind of place where married-into-billions Bobby O’Rourke lives. Gated community with private security, perhaps?
I’m guessing it’s the old “this wall redirects migrants to the desert where there’s no wall” argument. Which could be seen as an argument for building more wall but Beto probably doesn’t think that many steps ahead.

So Florida is to blame for New York’s budget problems. All the tax-slaves jumped the fence and ran off.
https://hotair.com/archives/2019/02/12/new-york-governor-florida-stealing-population/
We were already stealing New York’s population long before federal tax reform. Nothing’s really changed. New York steals a ton of its’ residents money, Florida doesn’t (Or at least we steal a lot less).
No. People move to Florida just because of the weather. No one makes decisions about relocating based upon taxes and job opportunities. We are all stagnant actors.
This is the argument that is frequently made in Illinois
That’s the part where I just SMDH. If I ever moved to Florida it sure as hell wouldn’t be because of the weather.
I don’t think I ever stopped sweating for a minute during my time in that state. It was by far the worst of the lot on that trip, and my stays included Alabama, Mississippi and Texas, which aren’t known for being slackers in the horrible summers department.
What, you don’t like swamp heat only relieved by the occasional hurricane?
Seems like half of my mother’s family, all of whom were born in NYC or Long Island, live in south Florida.
They just need to pass a leaving for Florida tax and all will be set right.
We’re three election cycles away from prog states advocating for walls to keep people in. Book it.
No need to physically retain the people. Just make a non-removable tax obligation regardless of the current location/residence. Convenience of the employer logic is already a bullshit enough tax grab sonit wouldn’t be that much further down the rabbit hole.
Just make a non-removable tax obligation regardless of the current location/residence.
We’re already starting down that road with the removal of a requirement that a business have a physical presence in a state before the state can impose taxes on that business’s sales to residents of the state.
NJ did it. It didn’t really help.

“Kaepernick wanted $20 million or more to consider playing with the league”
Kaepernick did learn a very important lesson in economics. Maybe he can think about that as he sits on the couch during another football season.
Well he didn’t learn from opting out of a guaranteed contract.
“The Miseducation of Colin Kaepernick”
You are assuming that
a) he actually wants to play
and
b) that he does not make more by maintaining his status as a blacklisted player
Asking for $20 mil to play in a startup league was just a politically advantageous way of him saying “Thanks but no thanks”.
He’s now in the martyr business, not the QB business.
Ha! Kaepernick is such an arrogant douche.
What do people who play that silly hobby think about that golfer who allegedly stiffed his spick caddy?
Unsure. Seems to me that accepted mores call for the caddy to receive 10% of the player’s winnings + tips. Who was the purported asshole?
Matt Kuchar, and he and the temp caddy had worked out a pay scale ahead of time and then offered him a 15g bonus ( he made 5g for the week), caddy wanted 50g, not sure who is the asshole here.
“…and then Matt offered…”
if that wasn’t clear.
Huh. Kuchar is apparently one of the best guys on the tour. Smells like a shakedown, to me.
Exactly.
Kuchar had to offer the guy 5 grand out of desperation, basically. He needed a caddy on short notice. There are plenty of caddies who don’t make $5K at a tournament under the 10% cut of winnings – guys whose golfer miss the cut, for instance.
I heard the deal was $1000 no matter what, $2000 if he made the cut $3000 for top 20 and $4000 for top three, so he already gave the guy a 1 grand tip and offered 15 more, pretty sweet for a weeks work. That caddy can go fuck himself.
Didn’t know that. Makes the caddy look like even more of a weasel.
Kuchar didn’t stiff him. He paid him the $5000 they agreed on prior to the tourny, and then offered him another $15,000 as a bonus after winning which the guy refused so he could complain and pretend to be a martyr in an attempt to shame Kuchar into paying him the 10%. Here’s the thing though – Kuchar’s not a big star. He might not have won shit, in which case the guy wouldn’t have even gotten $5000. That’s why he had to offer the guy a flat fee in the first place, to get a guy on short notice.
All of the tetris locks into place.
Ah. Thanks all.
Because, as you know, sounds like the media (surprise!) are painting Kuchar as the bad guy. You made $45 million! Russo even said he should invest in the guy’s laundromat.
How’s that for socialism creeping in to people’s lives? It’s irrelevant how much he made. If they made a deal, honour it.

My marriage was on the fast track to divorce until we both sat down and looked at our finances. I’ve always been a “saver”, but my wife got on board with me immediately when I showed her a number starting with a 5 and having 6 digits as our total debt. She didn’t think it was a crisis until I found the right way to explain it to her. We have been budgeting to the penny(ish) ever since. We never want to be in the unknowing place ever again.
Know where you are, know where you want to end up. Then you can connect the dots.
Ours starts with a 2, in the middlish range, but it still seems insurmountable.
*nods in knowing agreement*
I don’t think that my total debt is quite into 5 figures but then we do not own a home and are living completely paycheck to paycheck and struggling to even do that
I think my personal debt starts with a 6 or 7 and is five digits. That’s a house and car partially paid for. By some calculations that means I have a positive net worth.
I never really worry about car or house debt because that won’t sink you — it’s the runaway stuff that snowballs on credit cards, etc that puts you in a bind. The house and car(s) are basically budgeted for. I looked at the tables and we are in the top 5% of earners (It doesn’t feel like that at all!). We have gotten our extra debt under control (401k loans suck, but are a decent choice to pay off larger amounts in 3 years.)
I never really worry about car or house debt because that won’t sink you
Assuming they’re budgeted for, yes. There’s a reason “house poor” is a thing. I’ve also met people who have rolled so many cars into the next loan that theyre $15k underwater on their $12k corolla.
Peak financial stupidity is hanging out somewhere in the ether with peak derp.

1k a month in car payments? How is that even possible?
2 cars? Maybe 3?
I have 0 debt but only because I haven’t spawned and I don’t own anything.
2 cars, one brand new with all the trimmings. $575/MO for that one, $400/mo for the other one. Just clicked submit 10 minutes ago to pay off the 2nd car, so no more car payments for us!
I remember that feeling Trashy.
Just don’t forget to take the lien paperwork to the DMV when the loan company sends it.
1k a month in car payments? How is that even possible?
If you include lease payments, not hard at all.
I had $1200 a month in car payments until a couple of months ago. 5 years ago I had a 2001 Ford Taurus with 200k miles on it and a 2003 Ford Freestar (which I bought used in 06) with over 250k miles on it. Both needed to be replaced between Spring of 2012 and Summer of 2013. One car had a $700 a month payment, the other had a $500 a month payment (technically a little less than that but we always rounded the payments up to those numbers).
Looked into buying a used car in each of the cases and because of the way the banks treat the loans differently for new vs used cars it was actually cheaper to buy the more expensive new car because the increased interest on the used car actually made it cost the same or more than the new car.
Thank you for that President Obama.
. 5 years ago I had a 2001 Ford Taurus with 200k miles on it and a 2003 Ford Freestar (which I bought used in 06) with over 250k miles on it.
Change freestar to escape and cut the mileage by 75k each, and thats what we had 5 years ago, too. Both had engine issues among other things, so we bought the 2 newer cars in 2015.

What worth the most in your life probably doesn’t show up in your bank account. In fact, I feel sorry for anyone who only finds value in their life based on their net worth.
My debts are $300K+, my financial net worth is very difficult to calculate because of the elaborate liability and tax avoidance schemes I have in place, and I really don’t care that I don’t actually know what my financial net worth is. Money and wealth exist only as a means to material security – the knowledge that you won’t miss any meals, won’t have to sleep in the open, etc. – for as long as possible.
Anyone who uses net worth as a way to keep score is playing the wrong game with money and wealth. They should stop doing that.

Why, because those are all things that were done for my family growing up.
I’m surrounded by people who make more than me. And I don’t give two flying shits.
In my teen years I was the king of the strays. I was fairly autonomous from my parents but there were many a runaway that stayed in Mom and Dad’s house. Just a soft touch to be honest.
I’m terrible with money. The only concept I get is that if you have some, you can do fun things with it.
Yet, I’m doing very well. Better off than young me ever dreamed I’d do. Why? My wife. She is very smart with money, likes to save and has an iron will.
The only thing she has taught me is the concept of “How badly do I want to fight with my wife if I buy this?” In reality, it works pretty well. I don’t waste all my money on short term dumb things like I used to.
Yeah, there is a time in our lives where more isn’t necessarily better. The recognition of that time is important and by George, I think you’ve got it.
See, Unciv has what I think is the right attitude.
How about who gives a shit about how you came to be wealthy as long as you didn’t steal it.
You Didn’t Build That 2: Electric Boogaloo.
A bunch of people have more money that me, sure. I made my life and career choices and sure I’m not exactly Bezos or Musk, but I like what I do, I got enough money to feed myself, keep a roof over my head, and buy some video games. I hope to make myself better and work harder to get more money in the next job later this year, but I’m pretty okay and doing quite decently for a millennial.
Meant to add before I hit the damn enter key: I don’t feel the need to be envious of the other people and I know if I apply myself more and make solid choices, it’ll all be okay.
See my comment above to the Pope. Same applies to you
…and all the others here…
Why Does It Feel Like Everyone Has More Money Than You?
Because we stopped using credit to buy shiny things 2 years ago, and most other people live beyond their means?
trshmnstr has it correct.
All those new toys and fun stuff you see everyone else you know makes about the same as you is all being bought on credit. One appliance breaks or a major car problem and these people will be in dire straights both financially and their marriage.
Nothing puts a strain on your marriage quite like not having enough money for all the wild things you bought.
A recent study from Merrill Lynch and Age Wave reported that 79 percent of the parents surveyed are providing financial support to their adult children, at an average $7,000 a year
Dafuq? 79%?
Shit like this makes me want to buy 1000 acres in the middle of nowhere and live smack down in the middle of it.
*BATFE has joined the game*
This has got to be some sort of a new trend. I certainly don’t remember it when I was growing up. And my impression is that it isn’t even stuff like the adult children living at home while they save up for a down payment on their own place. It’s out-and-out subsidies.
Arrested development. What happens next generation when mommy and daddy stop getting allowance from grandma and grandpa. We’re gonna have a bunch of young adults running around with no work ethic and no allowance.
Which is why I think we’re seeing the increasing popularity of socialism. You’re seeing a generaton that is starting to look at the government as their substitute Mommy and Daddy.
Unfettered capitalism. What’re you gonna do?
People have a right to do what they want with their money. And I have a right to personally disapprove.
Name and shame the cultural influences creating this mess.
I have a ne’er do well cousin who sponges off my aunt a lot. The aunt has asked me to have a few chats with him (because his real dad is out of the picture).
Last time she was asking me to talk to him, I pointed out that a lot of his worthless behavior would end if she stopped giving him money. Her reply, “I don’t give him money any more. I pay a few bills for him, but no cash!”
Sigh.
She won’t cut him off and go tough love on his ass.
I was assured that money is not fungible.
“I love you too much to enable your self-destructive behavior.”
I’d have to see the study. Does it include college tuition? What’s the median? Does it include Christmas gifts?
Doing some quick math if I add college tuition and help with the down payment on my first house, my parents averaged $2500/year. It’s even higher if you count cash Christmas presents and help with my kids’ college funds.
Since when do parents help with any of those?
/born poor
You should have done a better job choosing your parents.
/born lucky
I tracked down the study about parents helping their kids. Here’s what they include for adults (18-34):
Food/Groceries
Cell Phone
Car Expenses
School
Vacations
Rent/Mortgage
Student Loans
So what the study really means is that if you have a kid in college, you are paying a lot.
Since I graduated from law school, the only financial aid I have gotten from my parents is a couple of short-term bridge loans to cover the gap between buying and selling a house.
This thing where adults are sponging off their parents for a lifestyle (and that includes a house) that is beyond their means is just baffling to me. Especially when those parents almost certainly do not have enough saved for retirement.
I was raised in a similar mindset to you. During undergrad, my dad paid for 2 of 10 semesters (I paid the rest), and I lived at home when I worked a co-op at my dad’s company. Oh, and for the month between graduation and starting my engineering job.
Haven’t received another penny from my parents that weren’t birthday/wedding/baby gifts.
It wasn’t even a question of asking for support. My dad would help out if it was between that and sleeping in your car, but short of that there was too much shame in asking.
Asking for help feels like an admission of failure. The last time I stooped to that was when it was physically impossible for me to move out of my apartment alone. Asking for money is out of the question.
There was a stretch after law school when I was living at the Y, selling plasma to pay for ramen.
There was another stretch, after my divorce, when I was living in my own basement and renting out the main house.
It literally never crossed my mind to ask my parents for money.
I crashed at my folks’ place for a couple weeks somewhere during undergrad which they were glad to let me do but most of that summer it was couch surfing and at one point a rooming house and living literally on peanuts. And all of it was my own damn fault for being a bit of a fuck-up that year.
My parents paid for my undergrad college. Because it was an expensive private school, I didn’t ask them to pay for my graduate degree. The help they gave me for my the down payment on a house was originally a loan. I wouldn’t have asked for it, but it’s the Bay Area, and even the small house we bought on the fringes was expensive. Anyway, that loan turned into a gift when I lost my job when the bubble burst in 2000. Actually, I held my job until 2003, but eventually my company succumbed. I asked him if I could delay payments until I found a new job and he said just make it a gift. As for the help with my kids’ college expenses, my dad says it’s his way to avoid the inheritance tax, and he believes that children should have an education. The children he’s related to anyway. If my parents weren’t set for retirement there’s no way I’d want to accept the money, but again, at this point it’s a way avoid the inheritance tax.
Why Does It Feel Like Everyone Has More Money Than You?
Because their assets are visible but their liabilities are not.
This is gold. Stealing.
That is God’s Truth right there.
I was appalled when I worked for a short stint at a consulting firm in Chicago. A lot of people making good money, and from what I could tell they burned every paycheck as soon as it came in on fancy cars, houses/apartments, restaurants, etc. People making six figures, often with spouses making good money also, who were paycheck-to-paycheck.
Neiman Marxist says those grapes were sour, and nobody I know wanted them, anyway.
“Anything is possible: today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world,” Ocasio-Cortez, whose district would have been impacted by Amazon’s new HQ, wrote on Twitter.
De Blasio says, “Hey, is that a parade? I’d better go try to jump in front of it!”
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio criticized Amazon for shelving HQ2.
“You have to be tough to make it in New York City,” de Blasio said in a statement.
“We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world. Instead of working with the community, Amazon threw away that opportunity.
“We have the best talent in the world and every day we are growing a stronger and fairer economy for everyone. If Amazon can’t recognize what that’s worth, its competitors will.”
Whatever you say.
-ef
Alright, I know its what big city folk do. But don’t you think that even they have to recognize it’s bulshit. “New York City” being the “Greatest City in the world”? Really? I mean every city has its own set of issues, but i wouldn’t put NYC at the “tippy tops”.
A buddy of mine lives in the city. I went to see him and when his girlfriend got a couple drinks in, she started going on and on about how “everyone in America wants to live where they get to live.”
I don’t get it but whatever floats their boat down there.
More like “everybody from the third world” – and that’s nothing new. And the 70s proved that even that’s conditional.
I would rather live here.
Oh wait… I do!
It’s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
Traffic sucks, everything is expensive, there are too damn many people, and the gun laws are terrible
Try Grand Rapids, MN, looks similar to MI but fewer folks and few care about guns, in the negative sense
I had a friend who moved out for 6 months, came back to us “Hicks in the Sticks” and couldn’t stop telling me about how much he loved it, and how much everyone “was on the bleeding edge”. I’m sure he’s right that you are much more in “The happening” because there are so many people there, but i’ll take my sleepy quite town and remote job over the busy city.
I don’t think I could associate with a person who said bleeding edge.
Back in my punk rock days, we would often go to Chicago to see a show. It seems that the scene there (at least back in those days) was a lot more splintered. ie, if you were into straight-edge music, or oi, or free form jazz odyssey then there was a show that night for you to go to.
On the other hand, in Grand Rapids, there was the one show to go to. So even if the music wasn’t quite your thing, you still went to hang out with your friends. It brought a lot of disparate people together – sometimes good, sometimes bad. Like the white power skinheads who would show up now ‘n’ then.
OMG. You were in the same place as a Nazi? did you perform the appropriate cleansing rituals afterwords? otherwise you may still be tainted by their blemish.
…today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world,
I think it’s save to say that Jeff Bezos wasn’t the one who lost out yesterday.
There’s been some murmors that the powers that be among the Dems might be inclined to crush Red Cortez over this.
At some point, maybe. But, at this point, they’re saddled with her for the next two years. And as far as I’m concerned, “Enjoy the ride, guys”.
I remember hearing the same thing in regards to the GOP and Trump.
I’m sure they were also inclined to crush him.
Karla Marx also represents an area where the national stage won’t be too surprised to hear of a random mugging where the victim was shot twice in the back of the head and nothing taken.
Trump is Preezy. Cortez is in the house. A difference.
Oh, for fuck’s sake.
Edit fairy? Pretty please?
One thing I miss about Reason was that sometimes when someone would screw up their HTML it would reformat the whole page. The commenting features were barebones to the max. There weren’t people crying for edit fairies. They just sucked it up and soldiered on.
He was just hoping for “Thicc” fairy.
Nobody called for an edit fairie because they knew, on that orange ground, no help was coming.
I know it’s not anything major, but the fact that TOS comments couldn’t handle failed tags scared me.
The whole site was shakey. The squirrels became a running gag for a reason.
For the life of me I could never understand why they were rolling their own instead of just going with one of the many CMS’s out there.
What is sad is how many of the ones used suck hard.
beeradvocate.com rolled their own and it is nice.
I also like sbnation’s.
You would’ve preferred disqus?
With disqus, I would never have seen any of the comments.
*shudder*
Only thing worse than disqus is the facebook based abomination that cafehayek uses.
Yeah, there should be a dark place in hell for the Facebook comment plugin.
So this week one of our contracted truckers dropped stone dead from a heart attack in the parking lot. That was something.
People just don’t respect contracts.
At least he didn’t do it behind the wheel.
A considerate man, to the very end.
All mirth aside, here was a random guy, going about his business. Lord knows how long he laid there seeing as it was 25 below and nobody would venture outside without good reason. It was just sad.
Ahh. That does suck. This recently happened in my neck of the woods. Very, very sad.
A kid who worked in the Call Center I used to support had an aneurysm in his driveway walking to his car one morning on his way into work. Early 20’s, nice kid.
A guy I used to work with did that. Croaked behind the wheel on his way to work. Jumped the median and hit some poor bastard on the other side.
The other guy lived, but was messed up pretty badly. It was a terrible story.
That’s a fear I have, that I may be the cause, one more thing to worry about.
That’s how my Dad checked out. I told the story some months ago.
Why doesn’t the government pass a law making dying while driving illegal??
When I was in college I worked one summer for Indiana department of transportation repainting the salt spreaders (that’s where I developed my hate for the color yellow) and a guy driving a tar truck had a heart attack and died. It hit the center divider and the tar filled the water drains. They pulled us away from the painting and I was on the side of the road cleaning tar out of the drains for two days. If you’re ever driving north bound on I 465 near I 70 you can still see black tar on the center wall. What was really creepy is the lunchbox of the guy that died sat on the side of the road for weeks.
Yeah, one job I’m under consideration for, the opening is to replace a guy who died. Accident in the home.
NPR Voice – Good times, Good Times…
Minnesoda Man may soon be in trademark dispute with STEVE SMITH
I wonder if the guy actually had an erection, or if he was rock hard simply because his pecker froze solid while running around in the woods naked?
I read a Darwin award of a couple getting some love under a tree during a storm. The tree was stuck by lightning, and the woman died instantly. The man however survived and when he came to… he was stuck.
“he came to”
Then how could he possible be stuck?
That couple had a bunch of electricity in their relationship
It must have been quite the shocking occasion for the guy.
The secret to a happy relationship is staying grounded.
Court and spark.
What you did there, I see it.
At least he made her curl her toes.
MN sounds like a horror movie
Its all just propaganda to prevent people from moving there.
If that was the end game, they’d just put Pope Jimbo in all the tourism ads.
What’s up, my NoDa?
Yah, heeeeyyy daaarrrrrrrrre!
Its rather nice for three months out of the year.
WI is where things get really wonky.
If you are ever in town, look me up and I’ll show you around. You can come check out my collection of plastic tarps, band saws, and duct tape that I keep right next to the floor drain in the basement. It’ll be great!
Don’t for get to put the disclaimer “if you like mosquitoes” in the fine print when you make wild claims about it being nice.
Meh. I’ve camped on Assateague Island for a week during mosquito season once. I don’t even notice normal volumes of mosquitoes after that.
PS – don’t camp on Assateague Island during mosquito season
Could be worse, you could be camping on Plum island during Greenhead season
Has anyone seen Tundra today?
Yep. I’m looking at it right now out my office window.
Right here, dude. Enjoying the sunny icebox.
And then when the SEC joins the game and kills every possible avenue for raising capital that might be accessible to the less wealthy, such as crowdfunding…
It’s for your own good, you ingrate.
Uffda. I guess the state bureaucrats didn’t schedule enough status meetings. A report was just released that says that the reason the new licensing system Minnesoda tried to build failed was because of a lack of oversight.
And therefore we couldn’t possibly fire a single person over it. It wouldn’t be fair.
Oh, come on, even New York managed to roll out a revamped licensing system without botching it. And ITS suck.
/ITS Employee
Is that the Driver’sLicensing and Light Rail Agency
many factors, rather than a single person or a single decision
Excellent bureaucratic misdirection. I’m sure the truth is that many people and many decisions are responsible for the failure and wasted money.
So you’re saying getting a cow butt is OK…
How else are ya gonna get rennet? What, you hate cheese?
You don’t get it out of that end. Too much intestine in the way.
You aren’t reaching in far enough, then. Put your shoulder into it!
Look, I went into IT so I wouldn’t have to shove my arm up a cow’s rectum. Even if there are fancy cow bum gloves.
/golf clap
That’s what you call rolling with the joke.
doing my taxes showed me how much money we are really making, and I had to examine where our money is really going.
Houses and kids are expensive, yo.
This is not in any way directed at you, Mojeaux, but the “where does the money go?” question reminded me of a story recently about Denver teachers and how broke they all are. And why they need a raise.
One of the teachers in the story said, “I have no idea where the money goes.”
I think i found your problem.
Step one: See if you have money
I don’t like looking at all those credit card bills and being reminded every day that we bought a money pit we cannot get out from under.
As Matt Paxton from Hoarders says, “We’re all 5 bad decisions away from shitting in a bucket.”
Oh, look at miss fancy over here. Has a bucket and everything. Much be nice living so high on the hog.
But seriously, shit in a hole and cover it back up.
But seriously, shit in a hole and cover it back up.
As the Lord intended

Bookmarked. I’m going to bring that up at sunday school with my 9 year old this week.
Now I want to see a Deut 23:13 sign guy to stand beside the John 3:16 sign guy at sporting events.
Would certainly be great if Kaepernick ever plays again. Or Jay Cutler.
Now I know why “Cats” has the Old Deuteronomy character.
*Stuffs Visa bill up his own ass*
And only 6 from shitting on the sidewalk.

He was just hoping for “Thicc” fairy.
Better than “unshaven bum” edit fairy.
I haven’t seen that one yet unless you are referring to me staring at my gimlet-eyed reflection of a ‘morn.
Is that the Asian one? I miss her.
I don’t shave my bum, nor have I ever been asked to.
Ultimately, after more than $100 million spent and nine years leading to the 2017 release, “many factors, rather than a single person or a single decision,” crippled the system’s release and “agency leadership did not take sufficient steps to ensure that this large and risky project would succeed,” the report said.
Fingers were pointed.
Excuses were made.
No one was fired. No one pointed out that the head of the states IT department was a career hack who used to be on the staff of Gov. Mumbles and had no background in IT.
Me: Hey maybe I can take the wife to the movies this weekend.
*looks at movies*
Nope
They Shall Not Grow Old is worth your time if you haven’t seen it.
I want to see that but it’s not exactly Valentine’s material
I’ve got a cheap ticket to Alita, I may give it a chance. I remember watching the animated movie years ago, in the before times.

It’s been a fucking wasteland for awhile now. I almost never even check these days.
This was a fun exchange, as highlighted at Insty:
Reminds me of the journalist who attacked Tulsi Gabbard about not saying Assad is our Enemy. “How dare you refuse to acknowledge that when we have troops in syria”. Someone had to point out that our troops are there to combat ISIS not Assad.
In other words, the U.S. is assisting Assad by fighting his enemies….
The U.S. military policy in the middle east is completely incoherent, yet those who want out of the quagmire are the morally depraved ones. 🙄
Look, if we’re not the ones bombing the kids over there, it’s gonna be either one of those militia groups, Assad, Iranians, or even the…Russians. It might as well be us doing the dirty work. /prog
I see you are familiar Ken Shultz’ argument for the necessity of the U.S. bombing Libya despite it contravening both international law and the U.S. War Powers Act.
I actually kind of liked Ken when he was around here. He was pro that debacle?
Yes. He and I debated it at TOS, and basically his argument boiled down to if the U.S. didn’t do it then the French would have gone in, and letting them get the ‘influence’ was bad.
It was an issue where Ken had come to an emotional position, and then was stuck with having to construct a post-facto rationalization to justify it. It didn’t go well for him.
Or as the FDD report put it, the Iranians, Turks and Russians all have interests in Syria – therefore it is somehow in OUR interest to be there, thwarting their interests.
Apparently you have to go to Harvard to understand that.
But he lied for all the right reasons.
I chuckled.
I work into the wee hours so Mr. Mojeaux gets the kids off to school. I had stopped making pumpkin pies for the kids’ breakfasts because I had a nasty cold, then I forgot. Mr. Mojeaux has always said it doesn’t help his routine get easier, so whatever. Last night, XX asks me if I’m going to start making pies again. “Eh, I don’t know. Doesn’t seem to make anything better for your dad.” Mr. Mojeaux says, “Well, akshually … ” I might say no to my kids, but I don’t say no when something makes his life easier.
You are a very kind and great lady. Mr. Mojeaux is one lucky dude I’ll tell you hwat.
Thank you, but it is easy to do things for such an awesome guy. I got lucky. I am difficult to live with, and he just rolls with it.
Thumbs up doubly for the Hank Hill!
Nazi Pelosi strikes again!
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said that Congress should declare gun violence a “national emergency” and pass new gun laws to address the “epidemic” in the country.
Pelosi was referencing President Trump’s desire to declare a “national emergency” to obtain extra funding to build a border wall.
Pelosi hopes H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, will pass out of the House by the end of this month. According to the text of the bill, “it shall be unlawful for any person who is not a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer to transfer a firearm to any other person who is not so licensed, unless a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer has first taken possession of the firearm for the purpose of complying with subsection.”
She said anyone who tries to block the legislation should keep in mind that gun-control activists aren’t going anywhere.
“We’re not going away. You might as well save yourself a lot of time by accepting that fact, that the law will be changed, that lives will be saved,” Pelosi said during an event Tuesday organized by MoCo Students for Change, a student-led anti-gun violence group, and Change the Ref.
“It’s an epidemic. It’s an emergency. We should declare it an emergency and take great action immediately. Are you ready to accept the success we are about to have?” she added.
Yes, yes. Gun-grabbers are relentless. Maybe you should stop advocating things that are in direct violation of your oath of office. Propose an amendment to the Constitution or gtfo with your illegal legislation.
The thing that i think is interesting is how readily they will point out the “We can do that too” but then continue on with things like trying to remove the president via 25th amendment.
How many licenses could a licensee license to a non-licensed?
I’m not going away either, bitch.
How about no, you mendacious shit-weasel?
Pelosi can thank her wrinkly neck that political violence in this is mostly confined to the left in this country. So far. But she and her friends and deranged associates keep trying to push and push and push.
Congress doesn’t need to declare a national emergency to pass legislation.
We should declare it an emergency and take great action immediately. Are you ready to accept the success we are about to have?
Is it just me, or does sound like something would come out of Trump’s mouth? He really is living rent-free in their heads.
Putin was taken down by a strong woman. Just not a Democrat or a feminist.
Also…would.
I was reading about the Kursk incident which occured only a few months after Putin was first elected president… in 2000.
Oh, would for sure. To be fair to Putin, if you can hang with an Olympic medalist in judo who’s half your age, you’re doing pretty well.
When even Obama advisors say Karla Marx has no idea what she’s talking about….

Well yeah… that way they get to keep all of their government bennies.
Exploiting the unemployed is nobler.

*Special disposition being defined as removal from the faculty and dissillusion of the programs which produced such useless people.
The smirk heard ’round the world
“although campus officials denounced the posters”
Why?
Because they’re threatened by any sign of ideological nonconformity with their dogma. If the students were to be exposed to other sidea, the weaknesses in progressive orthodixy and its unveiled marxist underpinnings would become more obvious, along with the devillificiation of the ‘other’ views.
^This. The crux of their strategy is to attack the legitimacy of other ideas rather than the superiority of their own. IOW it’s not that the Progressive position is a better answer to a given question among a collection of peer contenders, it’s that the Progressive position is the only correct position, and any others are immoral or result from ignorance. Progressives aren’t the only ones who do this, but it does seem to be a popular strategy among self-labeled Progressives.
I’m glad the intent of my statment made it through, because that is one horribly typed comment I made.
Contra UCS, I think it’s fear. They’re afraid of the students. Not all of them, of course, but the activist ones. And probably some of the parents, too. Even though the schools weathered things like anti-abortion protests with gory imagery just fine no more than 10 years ago, now the administrators cower. The program of Federal student aid has been so thoroughly ingrained into the culture of college that the universities do not need to compete on erstwhile notions of merit (scholastics, research, connections, even athletics) but instead compete on the “experience” a student will have. To the coddled children entering college today, the experience would be diminished by unpleasant speech, words, or images.
We may both give them too much credit. To assume that they think big and are not just small, easily outraged people who think no further than the initial emotive flush through their minds.
Perhaps. I also think the tail is wagging the dog at many of these places, where the most emotive and most vocal members of the administration, faculty, and student body are driving these actions. But I do think it’s fear that keeps the rest from speaking out or keeping a lid on it.
Yes, a lot of the administration are young indoctrinated recently graduated mushheads who at the least are sympathetic to the student idiots, if not actively engaged in egging them on.

Something kept looking off about This house. Took me forever to figure it out.
It’s not symmetrical.
Needs more overhang for the murderholes
The big windows on one side and tiny on the other makes my head twitch.
In a former life I was a architectural drafter. I was working with a client on his new house and he wanted a situation like this (but not as glaring). He said he didn’t want a window on the one wall because since the kids’ bunk bed would be going there anyway, he could save the money of the window. I reminded him that there wouldn’t always be a bunk bed there and mentioned the lack of symmetry from the outside. All to no avail.
It drove me bonkers that this guys was spending ~ $150K on a brand new house and was ignoring aesthetics in favor of saving $200. SMDH The customer is always right.
My brother, one of the top civil engineers in the country, has never said the word ‘architect’ without preceding it with the word ‘faggyass’.
Thank you for that. Although, coming from a nerdyass engineer, I don’t think it carries much weight.

I have to wonder who or what placed that hair across her ass. (full disclosure, I was banned from the local paper’s comment section for asking the same question)

One of the things ‘feminists’ don’t seem to get is that the price of equality is that it is no longer the job of random men who don’t know them to make their life easier or to put their health and well-being on the line to defend them. You want equality? That means if a guy is being an ass to you, you better handle yo’ business your own damn self.
That’s why feminism is not about equality, it’s about whatever suits the needs of university-educated white women.
Sometimes that means publicly flogging a smirking high schooler because he reminds you of an ex, sometimes it means putting a couple black athletes through the legal wringer because a little white cheerleader cried to her boyfriend that their threesome hookup the night before wasn’t consensual. Sometimes it means being raped on a rooftop in Haiti and apologizing for your rapist, sometimes it means tearing into dissident feminists for being exclusionary. Whatever the case, the cause is surely evil white men.
Well that was fucking dark.
Someone may have said “Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman”…

Part of the budget deal that Trump just signed designates the Indiana Dunes as a national park, which is what Indiana congressfolks have been wanting for decades. Trump truly is a monster.
He probably thinks that there is spice in those dunes.
The spice must flow.
I read that in the Hair’s voice, God help me.
Bill Weld has entered the Republican primary. I guess we’ll have a choice between a person who upholds libertarianish values and Bill Weld.
Haha! It’s funny because it’s true!
If you thought the Jeb Bush campaign had too much grass roots support, this dumb fucker will be right up your ally.
Bill Weld’s narcissism may match Trumps. Like, no one cares about you, Bill.
Also, it’s laughable that there were “libertarians” who thought Weld was genuinely interested in expanding the LP and not simply an establishment plant to try and fuck over Trump.
Doesn’t this guy have a slot-car race to attend?
I can’t wait for his listening tour!
Trump’s going to eat that alcoholic uncle looking fuck alive.
Yikes, right?! Have another one, rummy.

QueenPresident of the country.Peepul still beleeeve!
I can’t wait for Bill Weld It’s Happening gif!
Weld’s announcement is likely to trigger
angeruncontrollable laughter among President Trump and his supporters“We need the opposite of socialism,” he said. “In the federal budget, the two most important tasks are to cut spending and to cut taxes — and spending comes first.”
Weld laid out his positions on other issues, calling for less government intervention in health care and for more intervention to prevent climate change.
And Weld shits his own bed on the way out. Cut spending…by spending limitless amounts on a phantom problem and wrecking the economy & society in the process.
The fawning local media to sure trying to prop goober boy as a credible candidate? What’s his position on gun control these days? Oh right, that would sink him in the primaries right there.
He’s pro gun control?
He’s a Massachusetts Republican. Of course he’s for gun control and nationalized health care.

The five-shot rifle, that’s a standard military rifle. The problem is if you attach a clip to it so it can fire more shells and if you remove the pin so that it becomes an automatic weapon. And those are independent criminal offenses. That’s when they become essentially a weapon of mass destruction.
Weld’s common sense legislation when he was MA gov:

The five-shot rifle, that’s a standard military rifle.
Umm, a hundred years ago, maybe.
if you remove the pin so that it becomes an automatic weapon
I think if you remove the pin it becomes a decorative accessory.
There’s quite a bit wrong there.

But public sentiment is unsympathetic to those who voluntarily left the West for Islamic State’s proto-state, however traumatized they are today. When Begum and her friends left four years ago, top U.K. police officials promised that if they returned, they would be treated as victims. This week, they made it clear that the offer has expired.
But the refusal to repatriate British citizens, even if legally pragmatic and emotionally satisfying, is irresponsible. Many of Islamic State’s European recruits are second-generation children of Arab or Asian immigrants. Abandoning them to their fate or stripping them of citizenship, which the U.K. government has done in some cases, implies that their status as Europeans is contingent. It highlights, for British kids of minority backgrounds, that their Europeanness is fragile; that if they make mistakes, they may not get a second chance.
A mistake? Sliding through an icy intersection and knocking over a mailbox is a mistake. Travelling to the middle east to provide material support and assistance to an entity which has declared itself to be at war with your country is… something different.
Well, the Brits abolished capital punishment, so the worst that treason can bring is a fine and a couple of years of living better than back in Syria b
So let people return who are both traitors and true potentially violent dangers. The author must be out of his damn mind.
Or she’s just on the other side.
I guess they found the terrorism forever loophole. *facepalm*
How, exactly, would telling people it is an irrevocable choice encourage more people to make that choice? It might not reduce the numbers, but I can’t see it incrasing the numbers.
You don’t think the number of homegrown radicalized terrorists will increase if they welcome them back home from training abroad with open arms? You’re more optimistic than I am.
I was responding to the notion that telling people who leave to go jihadi can’t come back will mean more people will leave to go jihadi. I hadn’t really thought about whether barring the door would also increase the number of people who go jihadi but don’t leave the country. But you are correct; letting battle-hardened jihadis back into the country is likely to increase jihadi recruiting.
Ah OK I misunderstood your comment.
Begum has even declared that “she has no regrets” about committing treason. But, I guess treason is just incidental in post-Britain Britain.
You made your bed, now lie in it.
The public understandably fears that returnees would pose a security threat, but there are legal ways, based on more recent legislation, to deal with that danger. Britain’s police and intelligence services are regarded as the finest in Europe, and have extensive protective measures used to monitor citizens who are not imprisoned but are deemed to pose security risks.
Oh, okay, then.
Traitor/Freedom-fighter, what’s the dif? Just ask Justin!
The two “persons of interest” that were questioned by the CPD in the Smollett case have now been arrested:
https://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/in-the-know/430230-police-arrest-two-suspects-in-jussie-smollett-attack
I almost feel bad for the guy at this point. This idiotic stunt very likely just caused his career arc to plummet into Randy Quaid territory.
I dunno. The story keeps changing so quickly. One thing for sure, Jussie is full of shit.
Damn white supremacist Nigerians!
You see the CPD come out however and walk back the report that they were now investigating this whole thing as a hoax? They were so freaked out by the possible lash back that they even cock blocked their own story at first.
There is no way this is not a hoax. And they will be under huge pressure to let the whole thing just die off so the people that use this as an example of how racist everyone else is be able to keep doing so.
I don’t think the CPD will cave under any such “pressure”. The department has been constantly pilloried (however rightly in certain cases) by the very same people that want the Smollett thing to die quietly, and I’m sure they’re eager to punch back in any way they can. Also, arrests wouldn’t be made in such a high profile case if formal charges weren’t to follow soon afterward, so I’m really curious how this will play out.
Yeah, we’re getting down to brass tacks now. Something’s brewing.
Probably using possible charges against the two to get movement. Either they are charged, in which case CPD takes credit for how quickly they wrapped it up. Or they roll over on Smollett, provide incontrovertible proof of a hoax, and CPD goes from there. CPD is covered whichever way it goes.
I’d feel sorry for him if he had picked a less pernicious lie.
Two arrested concerning that Jussie Smollett thinger…

Sometimes you grab the tar baby, sometimes the tar baby grabs you.
It’s official:
Trump declares national emergency at border
This is a really bad idea. Unless the Republicans plan on holding on to the presidency for eternity, I guess.
Honest question – do you seriously believe him not doing so would have made a future president any less likely to do so for something else?
I think the party who professes to only want to follow the constitution will have no leg to stand on when they shoe is on the other foot.
And that’s different from before how?
Past bad actions don’t make this bad action the right thing to do.
Which was a different point from the ‘hope for an eternal presidency’ remark.
The precedent on misuse of national emergencies was set decades ago. There are dozens of active ‘Emergencies’ that have been going on for years.
Should this sort of thing be corrected? Yes.
Will congress do so? No
Does the future inevitability of someone else winning the election matter to whether this current issue is being handled well? No.
I honestly didn’t know (or I’ve forgotten) the “Emergencies” declaration had been (ab)used to such an extent.
Who (and why) has used it on a similar level to this?
58 SoEs have been declared since 1979, 31 are still active. There is one from Carter, 6 from Clinton, 10 from W, 13 from Obama. How much they continue to affect life varies.
List here: http://time.com/5496270/presidents-history-national-emergency/

Correction: 11 from W
It goes back to Woodrow Wilson. And Congress codified it 40 years ago.
Haven’t past presidents done it already, anyway?
Obama did it, but then it was to save us all from the evil rethuglicans that were blocking his agenda…
They blocked his agenda but he should be credited with the economic recovery that started under his administration.
I’m in awe that there are sitting Democrats who, today, are crediting Obama with the good things that are happening to the economy.
He can get credit only if you count the repeal of the regulations he put in place that were stifling the economy.
When all you have is criminal activities, envy driven politics, and “we must resist orange man”, you are left with making up shit. A desperate need to hide the Obama administration weaponizing and then turning lose the US intelligence and Justice apparatus, turns into Trump Russia collusion. Trump’s congress rolling back a ton of brutally destructive regulation created by Obama’s pen and giving people a tax cut resulting in economic growth we were told was never gonna happen, turns into Obama’s economy. An energy sector that managed to nut just survive but thrive under the “we can’t drill ourselves out of this mess” Obama energy plan, turns into the US is killing Gaia. The list goes on and on.
All that is good is the work of the SJW morons. All that is bad is what they can’t take credit for.
Lawyers, start your engines!
Can they file a pre-emptory appeal to skip the 9th circus and put it in front of SCOTUS before the Hawai’ian judge files his injunction?
The volcanos demand a sacrifice!
There were many “National Emergencies”, most of them still in place but somehow I’d aver that Trump’s will become a lighting rod of discontent.
This is a bad idea. You know the next Democratic president is going to declare the climate change is an existential threat and therefore a national emergency. Not to mention gun violence, racism, and God know what else. This would take the power of the purse away from the House.
Too late. They’ll do it anyways now, like they did with the filibuster rules.
Die, Ginsberg, Die!
The Ginsborg, the?
No, https://youtu.be/gaXigSu72A4
You know the next Democratic president is going to declare the climate change is an existential threat and therefore a national emergency. Not to mention gun violence, racism, and God know what else.
And would do so regardless of anything Trump does.
Its a bad idea, but not for that reason.
^^^ This guy gets it. It doesn’t matter what that idiot does, when they regain the reins, all bets are off.
I suppose you are right.
Sometimes I’m not cynical enough.
I’m old and drunk enough to not really give a hoot.
Like I said yesterday, the majority of both TEAMs desire a monarch. The only limiting factor was the idea that the monarch had to be sympathetic to their causes; now that that’s been tossed in the porta-potty all bets are off.
Congress has been completely useless for a while now, so we’re stuck basically electing a monarch every 4 years whose only check on power is the whim of whichever Federal judge was shopped by the opposition. Packing the courts will eventually render them impotent… so… yeah. Here we are.
Representative Constitutional Republicanism was good while it lasted.
I’m okay with a monarch – if it’s me. Anyone else might get it wrong.
I’ve a spare clipboard, friend.
I’m not anti monarch. If the monarch turns into a tyrant, the people have much more incentive to kill him and appoint somebody less cruel. “government is us” prevents a lot of political violence.
It has come to this? A libertarian wishing for a monarchy? Dogs and cats fucking in the streets, I tells ya.
So Augustan Rome then only minus the killer orgies and the vomitorium.
*sigh* Look, the vomitorium was just the exit from an amphitheater, which had a great deal of throughput.

The academic laboratory of the Venezuelan coup has the highest academic pedigree of all — it’s housed at Harvard. Under the auspices of the university’s Center for International Development, the Venezuela project of the Harvard Growth Lab (there are growth labs for other countries as well, including India and Sri Lanka) is full of academic heavyweights, including Lawrence Summers (who once famously argued that Africa was underpolluted). Among the leaders of the growth lab is Ricardo Hausmann, now an adviser to Juan Guaido who has “already drafted a plan to rebuild the nation, from economy to energy.”
———–
The Growth Lab website provides some other ideas of what Hausmann’s plan likely includes: Chavez’s literacy, health care, and food subsidy “Missions,” a growth lab paper argues, have not reduced poverty (and, implicitly, should go). Another paper argues that the underperformance of the Venezuelan oil industry was due to the country’s lack of appeal to foreign investors (hence Venezuela should implicitly be made more appealing to this all-important group). A third paper argues that “weak property rights” and the “flawed functioning of markets” are harming the business environment — no doubt strengthening property rights and getting those markets functioning again will be in the plan. If this sounds like the same kind of neoliberal prescription that devastated Latin American countries for generations and was imposed and maintained through torture and dictatorship from Chile and Brazil to Venezuela itself, that is because the motivation is to bring back the “wonderful Venezuela of old.”
Obviously, a libertarian overthrow. Neoliberal economics is worse than slavery.
Salon is the perfect name for a platform for detached, haughty assholes who know what’s best for everyone else.
Um… I think Venezuela’s economy just jetted off to Turkey a few days ago. There’s nothing left to thieve.
Since it wouldn’t be a libertarian overthrow I would be cautious about the solutions of these top men as well. Certainly better than outright socialism but I’d be worried about assumptions made about successful economies in these plans which could backfire and give free markets a bad name by association.
Congress has been completely useless for a while now
