You know what they call the guy who got the lowest passing score on the bar exam? A lawyer. You know what they call this guy who got the lowest passing score on a Microsoft certification exam? Certified. Thank god. Hopefully, I never have to do tech certs again. I’m getting too old for this shit.
I can’t imagine why this guy is going to prison for 47 years. Couldn’t have anything at all to do with his anger management issues.
Classic Florida (young) Man. I guess it is still too soon for “shoot up the school” jokes.
All these vegans and vegetarians bitching about global warming are aggressing against my Neanderthal DNA.
I dunno about the big boat, but I’m pretty sure any five random guys with fishing boats in Florida could take on “Iran’s elite Republican Guard” navy pictured here.
RIP Peter Tork
That big boat is a plywood mockup of an american carrier.
Seems like one helo flown off the deck of the carrier would make short work of those guys.
Even the plywood helo would defeat them…
You and your wood fetish again.
Welcome back!
I hope the remember to not use live explosives when they ram the plywood carrier. Otherwise they will lose their entire navy during training.
I think the Floridians would be more heavily armed than the Iranians.
I can understand being pissed if you get sentenced to 47 years because your lawyer did a piss poor job, but after pleading guilty? The mind boggles at how this man wasn’t already in prison.
Aggravated arson?
Is there a friendly version of arson?
Imma guess he told him if he plead guilty the court would grant some leniency…
domestic abuse, aggravated arson, felonious assault and cruelty against a companion animal
Maybe the judge was an animal lover?
Well, there’s arson for insurance fraud, Arson to watch the flames, and arson to kill people.
From a very quick look at Ohio’s law it looks like aggravated arson is if the arson causes harm to someone or the fire is set in an occupied building, regular arson is for unoccupied buildings with no further collateral damage.
Probably a lesser charge for attempted murder by arson.
Mrs. O’Leary?
I bet British arsonists have a more polite approach.
“Why excuse me, I say, I say, old chap, what would you think of me burning down your house? Not to be rude, of course, no, never rude. Just for a jolly fine fire? What do you say, old chum?”
Don’t you usually plead guilty as part of a deal with the Prosecutor with an agreed to penalty?
In a lot of cases, the judge can throw out the plea recommended sentence and impose another one consistent with the offenses plead guilty to.
Yeah, I’m gonna guess that the item left out of the story was that his lawyer told him he would get 5-8 years and be out in 3-4. (or some such). The sentence of essentially life in prison probably came as a bit of a shock after pleading guilty.
On a “media critique” note, the article says he “allegedly” struck his lawyer. And includes a link to the video of him doing exactly that.
So for this guy, on tape, with multiple eye witnesses, it is alleged that he hit someone.
But for Nick Sandmann, he “got in the face” of a “vietnam veteran tribal elder” and was disrespectful and mocking native culture.
Not even “alleged” to weasel around it, just straight up stating lies as facts. The major difference, of course, is a MAGA hat.
“Struck” is objective, you either did or didn’t, no weaseling with “Struck” thus They have to add in ‘allegedly’. Meanwhile, “Being disrespectful”, “mocking” even “got in the face of” are subjective they have the weaselliness built in, so to speak, no need to add them.
“Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard”
What part of elite don’t you understand?
I’ve never seen ‘elite’ used in that manner. Like ‘liberal’, it apparently means something much different than that old guy Webster thought.
The best turd in a pile of turds is still an “elite” turd.
That’s me. The rest of you are regular turds.
The shiniest turd under the Christmas Tree!
What’s the rating criteria? Volume, girth, length, smell, color? so many options.
Why not all of those? And objective scoring, none of this Westminster Dog Show fucknuttery.
If you flinch when I yank on your nuts, you’re not getting first prize.
Courics have already been established as an international standard.
I send photos of mine to Riven, and she gives me a 1 to 10 rating.
It’s a relative measure.
What it means is their cannon fodder is even worse.
Yeah, in this relative context it probably means that they know how to load and fire a gun, and can be active participants in small-unit spray-and-pray operations.
See Human Wave, Iran-Iraq War.
Serious answer: In the context of the Iranian Military, the Revolutionary Guard are considered ‘elite’ because you have to compete to get into those units. They’re better equipped and trained and expected to be more fanatical and disciplined.
The Iraqi version was the Republican Guard.
From the look of his client, it looks like that lawyer could have easily gotten the Chris Handsome treatment.
Dangerously dumb “Florida (young) Man”, glad there’s a place he can go.

EVERYONE HAVE STEVE SMITH DNA
WHETHER THEY WANT TO OR NOT
According to the DNA test I did years ago when no one imagined the cops would go sorting through the database, I have more Neanderthal DNA than 85% of the population.
Well that explains a lot.
*nods massive forehead in solidarity*
Did the test just say “Florida Man”, or did it actually use the word Neanderthal?
You got me beat. I’m in the 84th percentile.
I was wearing shorts on a relatively warm winter day, and this little girl next to me in the grocery goes “Aren’t you cold?”
I smiled and said, “No, I have a very high percentage of Neanderthal DNA.” Her eyes widened and she began pulling her mother’s arm. Mom just told her I was kidding.
My oldest brother’s a pretty grizzled dude. A little kid in line in front of him stage whispered to his mom, “I THINK HE’S A PIRATE.” So my brother told him, “ARRR!”

I don’t understand two points:
1.) You shed DNA everywhere you go. It would be trivial for anyone to collect specimens if they chose to put in the labor.
2.) What could be in your DNA that one would like to keep private? Anything lurid or embarrassing has probably already been expressed phenotypically. Would you be so scandalized by all of us knowing that your genome contains rs17822931(C;C)?
You got a problem with sticky earwax?
Yeah. Why do you think I spend so much time in Asia?
But that earwax isn’t good for anything, you can’t even lube your bicycle chain with it.
It’s good enough for me to snort off an earlobe.

3.) people posting on this site, which means a permanent record out there that you are politically unorthodox, yet somehow congratulating themselves on their privacy/wisdom in not learning about their own DNA because that will somehow keep the government from getting it.
Newsflash Libertaria when you post here with your ‘anonymous’ handle, you set up a mask that would take any serious investigator whole minutes to pierce. All you are doing is keeping yourself from knowing your genome. The Feds can get it.
Even if it’s trivial, I’d rather they put in the effort than just give them everything.
Speak for yourself. I am behind 7 proxies and simultaneously employ 3 VPNs.
Ahh a tricky one. Agent Bigge prepare a list of scholars in philology and related fields, Agent Brouther prepare a list of people who watch 10 or more hours a month of twerking, large bottomed asian women, and really odd you tube videos. Compare lists.
My strategy hinges on them going to Daniel Everett’s house first.
I’d say that your strategy would be defeated by racial profiling, but they swear they don’t do that, and I am sure they never lie.
You do know that most of those proxy/vpn providers are actually the US or foreign governments, don’t you?
I am pretty sure my anonymous handle could be pierced in seconds. I didn’t think it thru too well.
I have a mutation in 18q11.2 — fortunately only 1, I would be long dead if I had it in both.
OKAY, I know *they* could easily get a specimen of me if they really wanted one.
My big fear, inadequately expressed, is that the government will mass subpoena all those DNA records and start doing pre-crime detention and similar dystopian bullshit on large groups of people. Or lifestyle monitoring and modification for people they deem health risks. Etc.
They already do all that stuff, but through your social media instead.
I’m not on social media, either…
Personally, I don’t have any particular fear of “them” getting a hold of my DNA. What I do have an aversion to is putting the data into the hands of those who don’t have contractual or social-norm requirements to handle that data in any particular way. When I give my data to a bank, there are both legal and social-norm mechanisms to keep them from using it in some ways. When I give my data to a doctor, same deal.
Once this technology matures, I’m sure we’ll, through a vaguely Cosean process, come up with rule set that allows me to be a net beneficiary from the use. But we ain’t there yet, and I don’t want to be an early adopter any more than I have to until then.
So I don’t go Gattica and scrub down in the shower with a wire brush every day. But I don’t volunteer the info to parties that don’t have any kind of constraints, either.
Again, all of this assumes the data has some utility other than curiosity.
Based on the way that analytics is used to drive business and legal decisions (ie often, recklessly, and against the interest of the data generators) lack of utility is not the reason that genetic information isn’t widely used. Its a just a problem of scale and infrastructure.
And, strictly speaking, its not about utility. Its about perceptions of utility. And the same dynamic as the losers curse is at play. Its not about ground truth utility. Its not about average perceived utility of all players in a marketplace. Its about the ground truth utility + error ranges of the most erroneous player in the market. In an infant market, those error ranges are big and get smaller over time.
Really? The shower incinerator options have gotten so cheap lately it seemed silly not to have one installed in the new place.
1. True. They *can* get anything. (Also, Gattaca is an underrated movie IMO.)
2. Uh….I don’t want to voluntarily give DNA to a database that can be cross-referenced….just in case I’m involved in something that could be deemed “against the law” and if my DNA were retrieved and identifiable, it would make it easier for LEOs and the judicial system to prosecute my ass?
I’m slightly terrified of my very unusual status in America as it is. I’m not going to gift them any additional ammunition.
They only need about 5% of the population on file to be able to extrapolate any retrieved DNA and identify the owner. It’s already happened, in one case some guy (a rapist so fuck him) was caught because of familial matches to DNA on file from his cousins.*
*I think, it’s been a while since I heard about it and I’m not up for googling it right now.
Is thisGolden State Killer the one you are thinking about?
… led by detective Paul Holes, uploaded the killer’s DNA profile from a Ventura County rape kit[156][157] to the personal genomics website GEDmatch.[158] The website identified 10 to 20 distant relatives of the Golden State Killer (sharing the same great-great-great grandparents), from whom a team of five investigators working with genealogist Barbara Rae-Venter[159] constructed a large family tree. They identified two suspects in the case (one of whom was ruled out by a relative’s DNA test), leaving DeAngelo the main suspect.[160] On April 18, a DNA sample was surreptitiously collected from the door handle of a car DeAngelo had been driving at the Roseville Hobby Lobby.[161] Soon after, a sample was collected from a tissue found in DeAngelo’s curbside garbage can.[162] Both samples were consistent with the Orange and Ventura County suspect profiles.[21] After DeAngelo’s arrest, some commentators raised concerns about the ethics of the secondary use of personally identifiable information.
As a naturalized citizen, I have no illusion of privacy left. So, I have no problem satisfying my curiosity:
So… your neanderthal ancestors got around, eh?
/Wink, wink, nudge, nudge
“You have fewer Neanderthal variants than 58% of 23andMe customers.”
But I’m 0.1% Broadly East Asian & Native American so maybe there’s some Denisovian up the tree!
If your ancestry isn’t 100% sub-Saharan African, you have ~2% Neanderthal DNA. Whether it’s 1% or 3% (or 5%) probably isn’t worth taking a test to find out.
I wonder how a WW2 carrier group would fare against the Iranian Navy.

XO: Helmsman did we run over something?
Helmsman: No, Sir.
*wreckage of Iranian navy seen in wake of carrier.*
The would need to re-fuse the 16″ shells since they won’t be penetrating armor.
Don’t waste the big ammo, turn the 20mm anti-air guns on them.
00 buck would be fine.
But the 20mms are already on the deck and you’d have to fetch the shotguns.
Why bother re-fusing? It’s not like their is any detectable difference between the results if the shell detonates when it hits the speedboat and those when it doesn’t. Hell the concussion from a 16″ shell whizzing by on a near miss probably shreds those boats.
Those shells cost more than the Iranian boats, don’t waste them.
Forward to 1:10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqfvYf5sMWA
Every 5th round was a tracer.
Well that depends, if the Iranians have read the blueprint – Millenium Challenge; and if they have a strategist like Van Riper.
Well, the US has already defeated the Iranian navy once before, with a single carrier group, so we basically already have our answer.
We lost… one helicopter.
That seems a bit high, what went wrong?
It was a reconnaissance helicopter and it is unknown whether it suffered mechanical failure or crashed while evading enemy fire.
I’m tempted to be uncharitable to the Iranians and say the machine broke. We have a lot of machines in the air with a lot of flight hours.

7 Scenarios for How the Mueller Probe Might ‘Wrap Up’
controversial FISA warrant that targeted him was renewed twice, in 2016 and 2017, meaning that investigators found evidence at the time that he was still being targeted by foreign agents.

meaning that investigators found evidence at the time that he was still being targeted by foreign agents.
That appears to be a lie, since the warrant was renewed by going to different judges each time (and it was 3 times not 2), which is against protocol. There is a reason Page is a forgotten man in the narrative these days.

Supporters of the ERA had hoped Virginia could become the 38th state to ratify it, and said doing so would have added it to the U.S. Constitution.
The proposed federal amendment says: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” It provides that Congress shall have the power to enforce its provisions “by appropriate legislation.”
Uh, no. They have to start the process all over again. There is no ERA waiting in the wings for one last heroic state to say “Yes”.
^This
Amendments have come with time limits since the early 20th century. There are several outstanding amendments that were sent to the states without a time limit, but the ERA is not one of them.
Amendments concerning child labor regulations and stripping citizenship from nobles are still on the table, so the activists are free to advocate for those if they want.

More fun with numbers. Long infuriating scare story about the pestilential invasion of humans in the Greater Yellowstone region.
tl;dr- People suck, and they shouldn’t be allowed to do things I don’t approve of.
The paradoxical challenge, Carpenter says, is that Greater Yellowstone’s own salvation depends upon it becoming the example other regions with wildlands in their backyards emulate. But it means achieving something that’s seldom been accomplished in the modern world—defying human nature.
——————-
There is today a palpable sense of social unrest welling up in Bozeman related to the multiplying impacts of growth. It is accompanied by a widespread perception that developers, especially speculators who made fortunes in real estate development in states like California, Utah and Colorado, have moved in for the kill, taking advantage of naive, provincial-minded planning staffs that are increasingly overwhelmed and codes that are lax compared to where the developers came from.
————–
Bozeman City Commissioner Chris Mehl, who is running for mayor in the fall, works as an analyst at Headwaters Economics and previously served as a Congressional aide.. He is frustrated by the knee-jerk anti-government sentiment that proliferates in the rural West—based on the trope that “big government” is trying to rob individuals of their freedoms.
But should the costs of an individual’s right to do business on private land be passed along to taxpayers and do individuals who are transforming landscapes have any responsibility to help protect assets valuable to the common good, such as wildlife? It is clear that the free-market and laissez-fair capitalism have never resulted in a wild ecosystem like Greater Yellowstone staying protected.
Lots of “projections” about rate of growth. Bozeman will be as big as Salt lake City in twenty years, or something, because people will just move here and build houses until there’s no more open land.
Why will they move here? Where will they work? Who knows? We plugged this growth number into the spreadsheet and projected it into infinity, and got a scary number. Now we’re going to shake this hobgoblin in your face until you agree to let us control every acre of land in the west, because this is more important than your dumb old freedom and property rights.
Fucking libertarians and laissez faire neoliberals will be the death of us.
Well that’s just looney-tunes.
Who knew trope was a synonym for truth?
Old, old friend used to define people thusly – a developer is a person who wants to build a cabin in the mountains, an environmentalist doesn’t want another cabin built near his own.
21st century update:
The environmentalist is jealous of your cabin, so you can’t have one.
Same-Sex married couple turned away from Christian tax preparer
I would turn them away just for the fugly factor

Heterosexual married couples aren’t having sex, I guess.
Duh
Even if they do, it’s natural.
Hey now, I’m married. Don’t other me.
Just the married ones.
Doh!
Heterosexual married couples aren’t having sex
That would explain all the DL married guys on Grindr…
Russiaville?
Obviously a Trump-town.
Turbotax ain’t got no time for the others, always asks is the marriage is as god says or is it some other non conforming apparition that TT will not process for reasons.
Got my fed refund back today! Better think about an upgrade snowblower or something. My friend, the Don is taking good care of us with the crumbs.
“Russiaville”
TRUMP!
Presumably the then-girlfriend was just there for moral support and not part of the tax filing. Asking the tax preparer to prepare a form for a same-sex couple filing jointly is asking the tax preparer to acknowledge the marriage and treat it like a real thing.
But I always find it interesting that these religious business folk can’t draw the distinction between civil marriage, which they are free to regard as counterfeit and not religiously binding, and the marriage traditions of their own faith. Rendering unto Caesar as HM said above but in a slightly different context.

A Green New Deal is Technologically Possible. Its Political Prospects Are Another Question.
Derp overload. It’s not the fact that it’s politically unpopular. It’s the fact that the NGD would destroy the economy. These people live in a bubble.
A Green New Deal is Technologically Possible.
So is sending everyone to Mars.
Let me rephrase….
You know what else is technologically possible?
Rebuilding Steve Austin?
Splicing Hitler’s DNA into the DNA of a velociraptor?
Using a giant catapult.
that’s just an example of a market failure that is easily corrected by technocrat intervention.
Technologically possible? What Star Trek world do these people live in?
Look, after their policies kill off 90% of the population, the rest of the list becomes feasible.
Work off another 9% and it will take care of itself.
Sure, it’s technologically possible. You could build lots of solar arrays and wind farms and storage facilities. But it would be hugely expensive and completely degrade our standard of living.
Here’s the story I noted this morning about a Swiss-owned, Australia-based coal-mining company which is going to “freeze coal production at current levels, and instead focus on commodities including copper, cobalt, nickel, vanadium and zinc, as part of its “global response to the increasing risks posed by climate change”.”
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-02-20/glencore-moves-to-cap-global-coal-output-post-investor-pressure/10831154
“Investor pressure”? Call me skeptical.
Parts of Australia are over 3 billion years old and loaded with heavy metals, but I’m sure that has nothing to do with the decision.
global response to the increasing risks posed by climate change
Translation: Coal, gas and oil prices have been in the crapper since fracking was invented so we are dedicating our efforts to mining stuff that makes money, and we are greenwashing this decision to give us cover when someone notices that copper, nickel, and cobalt mining are quite possibly the most environmentally destructive mineral extractions around.
Hey progs, Oil comes out of neat little holes drilled into the ground, Copper and Cobalt come out of massive open pits that look like moon craters for decades after mining stops, and the process dumps huge quantities of really toxic crap into the groundwater. Oh and by the way, refining cobalt produces more radioactive waste than a nuke plant…
You’ll probably know this:
I remember a case study from…. a decade ago?
Island nation, possibly Indonesia or Papua New Guinea. They took the entire top of a mountain off to strip mine, with disastrous results. If that rings a bell, what were they mining for?
Ok Tedi?
That one was copper I think. I am not any sort of mining expert though, just irked by the whole No Fossil Fuels! and btw no nuclear, but batteries are a ok nonsense. Yes lets outlaw the super efficient energy source that made the world a thousand times better, and also the really clean modern source and double down on what is quite literally the most environmentally damaging alternative.
That might be it.
NGD would destroy the economy. These people live in a bubble.

I was never a part of any government that sanctioned any of this.
and my ancestors came over in the 1910s, poor folks from the Netherlands.
Yeah but your meat-eating neanderthal relatives started it!
If the Native Americans get the casinos, what to the Blacks get? Marijuana concessions?
I am 100% in favor of reparations being paid to anyone who was a slave in the United States.
Paid by the people who held them.
There are a handful of convictions each decade, usually rich families from certain corners of the globe…
Why do you want to pay reparations to felons?
Does she really want to cast a light on all the possible factors that have undermined the ability of black families to build wealth in America for generations?
Daniel Moynihan already wrote that report. I think it would not happen today.
“A generation” and just barely. Black folk were free of Jim Crow about a decade before LBJ fucked them up royally.
Do the descendants of people killed fighting for the North get a pass?
What about people like me that have no slave-owning ancestors?
BTW, the fact that two of the most batshit crazy senators in the senate right now hail from MA, and are widely held as visionary geniuses in this state gives you a sense of the delusional thinking that dominates here.
What I write next is going to sound hyperbolic, but isn’t. It’s a concern I truly hold, arrived at by a year of increasingly hateful and aggressive behavior on the part of many of my high-school classmates towards political ‘enemies’. I believe that many of the people I went to high-school with would, given another six months of propagandizing by Rachel Maddow, willingly and without hesitation seize hold of me, my wife, and my kids, strip us naked, march us out into the woods, and put bullets into the backs of our heads. And they would be completely convinced it was an act of self-defense prompted by my attacks on society.
I’m moving out as soon as my daughter is old enough that the custody decree becomes inoperative.
And I’m not coming back.
Virginia is far down that road as well, and I feel the same way you do.
It’s easy to dismiss rants about whether billionaires are allowed to exist as just ‘one of those things’ but the problem is they really believe it.
What about people like me that have no slave-owning ancestors?
Technically everyone has a slave-owning ancestor, if you go back far enough, so they’ve got us all.
“And who was the gentleman when Adam delved and Eve span?”
About those batshit crazy senators – CA would like a word.
What’s missing from the story is a quote saying “I support reparations.” Maybe she was hinting at support, but she didn’t really come out and say it.
WIlly Kowalski – a poor white male whose family came from Poland in 1921 – had the honour of handing a reparation check to Lebron James.
Justice!
Government creates problem
Government needs my money to “fix” self-created problem.
Hmmm…
Think about the logic behind the reparations argument in simple, individualist, terms. Someone who kinda, sorta, maybe looks like me did bad things to someone who kinda, sorta, maybe looks like someone else. Therefore, that person who kinda, sorta, maybe looks like the person who was mistreated is owed a debt by me.
Kind of retarded, isn’t it?
Not only that, but the principal actors are all long dead.
These things fuck up the whole reparations narrative for me:
– Not all white people owned black slaves.
– Some white people were part of the African Slave Trade Patrol, the Union Army, or one of the various abolitionist organizations and lost their lives fighting to end slavery.
– Many white people in America today are descended from immigrants who came here after slavery was already over.
– Some black people owned black slaves.
– Not all black Americans are descended from slaves.
But no, these things are just ignored.
“Many white people in America today are descended from immigrants who came here after slavery was already over.”
I’m thinking it’s the majority of white people.
I think the argument goes something like this – Even you whitey-come-latelys benefited from the carry over racism that extended well beyond the ending of slavery. Likewise, blacks were disadvantaged well into the twentieth century whether they individually were slaves or not. Reparations are not individually assessed, it is not the individual who is guilty of nor the victim of slavery but society as a whole, thus we, the royal we owe us, the royal us, reparations. It’s still a very stupid argument just not for the “I didn’t own slaves and you weren’t a slave” one.
Not all white people owned black slaves.
Very few actually. It was mostly a rich, landowners game.
If you really believe that the “stain of slavery” is a genetic heritage that is passed on to the offspring and must be atoned for by those offspring, then a major chunk of African-Americans are also on the hook due to the “evils” of race-mixing.
I’m sure they have some pet theory about how it doesn’t count if you have some African-American overruling the whitey. But there are probably a lot of descendants of slave owners that have less slave-owner DNA than a lot of African-Americans, due to the vagaries of genetics and interbreeding with various immigrant populations.
TLDR; the collective guilt of race reparations is BS
To whom am I going to pay reparations? I haven’t oppressed anyone.
And as a native American lady, she may want to tread lightly on the ‘sins-of-the-father’ position. How many of her ancestors raided, killed and scalped members from other tribes?
Another myth perpetuated by white patriarchy.
Not so much of a myth, but uncomfortable for some current tribes. Those “peaceful” Hopi and Zuni, weren’t.

Reparations for those currently living? They should be paying. The average black Americans is better off than the average black African.

Also, as someone with a gay sister, why no outrage about the homophonic slurs? All to advance his career. Oiece of shit.
Um…no. Liar, fraud, convict and scum are enough.
I’m going to go with Swiss on this one.
Yeah… he’s just a dude.
The real problem lies with those who so gleefully seized upon his story and ran with it as indicative of everything that it means to be white, male and/or republican. The fact that there are so many of them and they were (are) so willing to vilify people they disagree with on politics is kind of scary. Scary in a Godwin’s law kind of way.
Alright, this is freakin’ hilarious.

People totally dressed the same in 1941 as they did in 1861, so the confusion is understandable.

To be fair there is no indication that is why they targeted the statue. Kids do dumb things. Could just be that.

Went to check out the Roger Stone Terrorist Instagram post, but I can’t find it since it’s been pulled. Thanks news, for letting me decide on my own.

Ugh.
Different genres. They’re both great in their own ways.
Wrong.
One great moment from Galaxy Quest is revealed in the extras.
In the scene at the end where Sigourney Weaver is going to push the button for the “save everyone” machine, she’s standing there with her jumper zipped up, and then in the middle of a sentence it suddenly is unzipped and there’s cleavage for days. No explanation offered.
In the extras there is a deleted scene where a short battle interrupts the button pushing and her top is opened during the fight. But the fight got cut and they just left the continuity error. Adds to the funny.

Roger Stone remains on the outside
U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson tore into Stone during the proceeding, saying she simply didn’t believe his explanation that an unnamed “volunteer” was to blame.
“I have serious doubts about whether you learned anything at all,” Jackson said. “From this moment on, the defendant may not speak publicly about this case — period. No statements about the case on TV, radio, print reporters, or Internet. No posts on social media. [You] may not comment on the case through surrogates. You may send out emails about donating to the Roger Stone defense fund.”
Jackson added an apparent threat to revoke Stone’s bail and send him to jail: “This is not baseball. There will be no third chance. If you cannot abide by this, I will be forced to change your surroundings so you have no temptations.”
———–
The government is asking for additional restrictions on Stone’s ability to talk about this case, while Stone’s attorneys are requesting a more detailed court order that still allows Stone to be able to retain his ability to speak publicly about the case, citing his First Amendment rights. A final ruling from Jackson could come within minutes.
“I am under enormous pressure,” Stone testified. “I now have TV people saying I will be raped if I go to jail. I’m having trouble putting food on the table and paying the rent.” (Indeed, CNN senior political analyst David Gergen pondered on air Monday if Stone — whom he called a “dandy” — would be raped in prison.)
Die in a fire, Gergen.
I mean, the government wouldn’t be investigating him if he weren’t guilty, and my gosh, the way he dresses…
I agree. But on the other hand, purposefully pissing off the judge that’s deciding your case is about as dumb as you can get. His attorneys were probably either crying, drinking out of the flask they keep in their desk drawer, or both.
Yup.
But a judge saying he can’t comment about a case that has been gleefully talked about by those who would put him in jail is a bit weird.
Nothing to see, here
Federal prosecutors have charged an analyst with the Internal Revenue Service with illegally disclosing confidential reports about Michael Cohen’s bank records that revealed that President Donald Trump’s former lawyer had sought to profit from his proximity to the White House, according to a complaint unsealed on Thursday.
The analyst, John C. Fry, was charged with the unauthorized disclosure of a document called a suspicious activity report, which banks file when they review transactions that raise red flags.

“Lesbians more likely to be overweight than straight women: study
In a report published in the Journal of Public Health, researchers at University College London and University of East Anglia in the UK say that lesbian and bisexual women are more likely to be overweight than their heterosexual female counterparts. Conversely, they also found that gay men are less likely to be overweight than straight men.”
https://nypost.com/2019/02/21/lesbians-more-likely-to-be-overweight-than-straight-women-study/
So dick helps you lose weight?
I like to think (this is purely anecdotal of course) that a lot of those ladies were rejected by every man they were ever attracted to, so they switched teams. I would not be surprised if we see a big uptick in the number of lesbians in the near future too. For some reason (again, anecdotal) women seem to have an easier time switching sides.
could also be hormonal.
A subset of lesbians who have a mix of hormones that is more masculine and leads to other consequences, including weight gain.
No scientific knowledge behind this – just anecdotal experience. I used to have a roommate who had ovarian cysts that made her start growing a beard. She became bi as the condition progressed. And gained quite a bit of weight.
I have had other lesbian friends who were in to fitness and were not at all in this category. Therefore my supposition of subset.
Damn, Florida Man.

Absolutely. I actually thought Stone was
smarterCannier than that. But- who knows? The charge against him, I believe, is “obstruction of justice” or some such catch-all. You’d think he would focus on that.

This time Simple-Joe get spotlight and keep pretty-boy in background.
Advisers to former Vice President Joe Biden, who is considering a White House run of his own, said in December that they’d approached O’Rourke’s camp about his being a vice presidential candidate. O’Rourke said then that he’d not spoken to Biden, and his camp hasn’t dismissed the idea since.
O’Rourke, who was a superdelegate for Hillary Clinton at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, applauded Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ announcement on Tuesday that he was joining the crowded field of 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls. But, he added, “I’m not going to consider other candidates” when deciding for himself.
O’Rourke said he’s still weighing what effect any national campaign would have on his wife and three small children.
“I want to make sure that I think that through. I won’t be limited by the end of this month, but I expect to be able to get to a decision by the end of this month,” he said.
More thoughtful, rational political analysis from Teen Vogue
For me, Trump’s presidency requires daily reminders that the power he exploits was already laid out for him. It is the combination of a terrible man and terrible power that seems to make every week the setting for a new scandal, embarrassment, travesty, or horror. We cannot simply replace one part and hope the other is never exploited this way again.
So often it feels as though Trump is not a mastermind arch-villain, but a con man who has been allowed to get too close to the levers of real power. As he teases the world about which lever he’s going to pull, I am left to watch and wonder how our situation got this bad, how long it’s been this bad, and what hope we have for bettering it.
That Trump, he totally pulled the rug out from under Congress. Power has been ceded to the Presidency over the course of the past century, but it was okay, because we only elected responsible people like Obama.
Now, we’ve got a sideshow huckster who probably doesn’t even own a copy of the Social Contract. There’s no telling what he might do.
I seriously do not understand what is so awful right now that Trump has brought to bear outside of a futile attempt to build a wall.
“It’s HER turn. “
Tacitly admitting they don’t believe in democracy whatsoever.
That’s the interesting thing – they can’t actually point to anything bad that he has done. They almost always bring up something that has been going on at least as far back as the Obama administration.
Oh yeah? Well what about ripping children away from their parents and putting them in cages?
Also, he banned all Muslims and tried to erase transsexuals.
Don’t forget, he caused that Charlottesville massacre.
I’ve never been a teenage girl but do they really sit around and talk about this stuff?
No.
My teenage nieces biggest problem with Trump is this – “If he’s so rich why does he have such a bad fake tan?”
Of course, my teenage nephew thinks Trump is great because – “He’s a Boss!”
My sister has a lot to answer for.
“If he’s so rich why does he have such a bad fake tan?”
I….
I never thought of it and now I can’t keep it out of my mind. She might actually have a future in the media industry.
They also don’t read Teen Vogue. The median age of their readership is around 29 years-old.
“According to data from ComScore, TeenVogue.com had 8,341,000 unique visitors in May 2017. One year later, they had barely half that, at 4,476,000. Most damningly, just 1.7 percent of their May 2018 audience was 17 or younger. Only 2.6 percent were 18 to 24 years old. At the absolute most generous estimate, in Teen Vogue’s digital audience — the only audience they still have after they shelved their print edition with a final copy featuring Hillary Clinton on the cover — 1 in 20 readers is an actual teenager. As it would turn out, 15 year old girls want to read “7 signs he’s into you” rather than guides to using butt plugs and ending capitalism.”

In the days after Superstorm Sandy soaked the East Coast, New York City Department of Transportation workers cataloged the damage to the agency’s fleet of vehicles. That information was handed over to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which would give the city enough money to replace the damaged vehicles with new ones.
Only one problem: Many of those vehicles were damaged before Sandy hit. Some hadn’t been operational in years and had been marked for salvage long before the storm.
The city has agreed to reimburse the federal government $5.3 million for its false claims, according to the settlement proposed Wednesday.
One government defrauding another? Inconceivable!
One would think a professional courtesy among thieves…
In examining the fleet, city employees “considered only whether a vehicle had sustained any damage during the storm, without regard to the condition of the vehicle prior to Sandy,” the complaint said. As a result, “many of the vehicles that Fleet Services included on its ‘final’ list of Sandy-damaged vehicles had been non-operational — and some had even been marked for salvage — years before Sandy.”
Sounds like a lot of pointless niggling over nothing.
$5.3M is the lint on the pennies found in the couch cushions.
Re reparations. Turns out my wife is the descendent of at least one slave owner. She’s got a copy of his will in which in addition the the house, land, livestock and farm equipment he says who gets his half-dozen slaves.
It felt weird AF reading it.
I think that was the peak of the family’s privilege – it’s more of double-wide kinda group now (her words).
My fiancee is descended from both slave owners and slaves. Turns out that sexual relations weren’t rigorously consensual in those circumstances.
Not sure how how these geniuses think reparations would work, since most people descended from former slaves also have some slaveowner ancestors.
EVERYONE is descended from slaves and slave owners. No exceptions unless you are a pure breed of some tribe in a remote jungle island.
