OK, not sure what is going on…but before the riot starts…here are some links:

Over to you, commentariat.
Don’t worry, Swiss. I blame Brett and I’m sure everyone else will too.
When does Brett Season start, anyway?
Brett Saison is available year round.
I thought the whole point of Florida Brett was that he was in season all year round.

Duck season!

WABBIT SEASON!
You fucked up. You trusted [me].
More seriously, sorry folks. Got stuck in work meetings. Travel sucks balls and I am shitty at remembering to communicate with my Glibs colleagues.
“The Oscars stage this year strongly resembles Donald Trump’s hair”
WTF?
Those are some flowing locks.
It doesn’t, really, but it’s a funny take.
I blame…
Well, no one really.
Don’t worry. I saw your comment.
Which one, I tend to spam this site.
The one swiss obliterated with the gif above.
Funny, I didn’t comment on the afternoon links until the lack of blame…
He must have recycled the emergency links from when we had more than one.
Interesting. I browsed the links and scrolled down to see you as post #1. Then I refreshed and the gif was there.
I find your magnanimity suspicious.
Oh?!
*readies arsenal of gifs, cow and cat butts*
He really means everyone equally.
Blexit!
the muted responses to the Northam/Fairfax scandals have been rather hypocritical.
I haven’t even started drinking…yet.
Perhaps that’s the problem?
~~~autofaerie privilege~~~
I find the commonality of thought disturbing.
I thought this was a noncollective website.
Autofaerie sounds like something out of Final Fantasy VI.
Thar’s your problem.
*pours a drink*
Why are we rioting and where? I’ve been working and missed it.
Same here. People, can you save the drama for when I’m less busy?
Late links.
Oh. I probably wouldn’t have grabbed a torch and pitchfork until at least 4:15.
*Adds Drake to “suspiciously magnanimous” list*
I’ve been strangling kittens since 4:01.
Euphemism?
We got early links yesterday so there’s still a ton of time credit from then.
Phillies massively overpaid. I never thought Harper was all that good.
Salty!
I’m biased, but I’m excited as a Phillies fan.
@#$% *&%$
/White Sox Fan
You were probably excited by the Ryan Howard extension, too.
Every Phillies fan in the world recognized that was a bad idea the minute it was signed.
But Bryce is an all-star player who’s only 26 years old. They don’t come onto the FA market very often. Locked him up for the rest of his career at a sub-$30 million AAV, which isn’t bad.
Tigers fan points and Miguel Cabrera and sighs.
8 years of Harper’s contract are after his age 30 season, there is no team opt out, and he has a full no trade clause.
He’s the next Chris Davis!
Even Ryan Howard wasn’t that bad.
*sobs uncontrollably*
Spending money like Democrats.
FIGHT FOR $25M!
It’s ok. Baseball is a boring sport. And that’s if it even qualifies as a sport. *ducks*
Even when compared to Trudeau?
I for one am sick of hearing various sportzball people talk about “collusion” so I’m just happy Harper went somewhere.
I don’t get the collusion talk (especially when the solution is to STRIKE!). Maybe owners are starting to figure out that the data point they need to look at is how much the team brings in each year and not what the biggest contract signed so far is?
I guess I don’t blame the players union for trying to get their members the biggest contracts evah, but the talking jocks should be able to realize that you can’t pay more in salaries on your team than you bring in. Right?
Also, paying non-pitchers a shit ton of money seems crazy to me. Baseball is a sport where it seems very hard for non-pitchers be so influential to a game that you can justify that sort of money.
Indeed. I was shocked when they said he was an outfielder. Aren’t they typically the least impactful players?
Me: How much would a star who won playoff series be worth? I guess Marwin Gonzalez’s ridiculous contract is the answer.
I fully expect SugarFree to retain counsel and get on to suin’!
Now put it on this.
With civilian casualties hitting record levels last year and more than 3,800 people killed, Daudzai said the momentum for peace was fast building and he hoped direct negotiations with the Taliban could start within two to three months.
Record casualties means peace is right around the corner?
You run out of prospective serfs/subjects!
That doesn’t sound like a lot in a country of 31 million. The U.S. has ten times that number of traffic fatalities annually.
At least Zardoz protects us.
When you’ve run out of people to kill and things to break… things will get quieter.
Something something “desert”, something something “peace”.
“EXCLUSIVE: ‘I don’t want gays around, I don’t like f****ts.’ Nigerian brother in Jussie Smollett scandal ‘nearly came to blows in a screaming match with a gay extra on the set of Empire over his homophobic bashing'”
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6756191/Nigerian-brother-Jussie-Smollett-scandal-called-gay-extra-homophobic-slurs-set-Empire.html
Gotta save DA NARRATIVE!!!
I’ll take a guess at which of them backed down based on the photos.
A bit of homophobia can still be squeezed from the incident. You thought we would be unable to start the conversation?
Thank God, we’re finally addressing the rampant homophobia among African Americans.
I think the Nigerian brothers would be Africans in America more than African Americans.
We need more Africans in Americans.
I bet I know what your xtube viewing history looks like.
My preferred site is called “Immoral”.
“Where da white wimmen at?”
amirite?
Unpossible. I’ve read all foreigners, except Europeans and Israelis, are good, pure, and correct in every way.
Most “progressives” I know are in awe of Europeans. They think that all Europeans are kind, intelligent, non-racist people who voted themselves gun control, government-run healthcare, and hate speech laws that actually land people in jail. They are under the impression that Europeans spend all their time listening to classical music and discussing new ideas for welfare programs and certainly never do anything lowbrow like getting drunk and watching sports on TV. Also, their countries don’t have a history of racism and oppression like America does.
Of course, you have to consult the intersectionality matrix to determine if someone is good or evil. Europeans lose some points for being white, but they’re still above white Americans.
But yea, they love to hate on Israelis.
The brothers were actually born in America. They are not immigrants.
Maybe people should call them Americans then.
Why the fuck do they keep getting referred to as Nigerian brothers in the media? I haven’t been following the case particularly closely, but based on what I’ve seen I would not have realized they were born in the US by the way they’re described in the basic reporting.
The racist press can’t spell?
I’ve been asking that for weeks. It’s almost like the news coverage has been duplicitous or something.
That’s indeed rather bizarre. They do look darker than most African Americans.
https://abcnews.go.com/US/brothers-police-empire-actor-jussie-smollett-paid-orchestrate/story?id=61136630
Unpossible. How can anybody be not-Anti-Trump and not racist?
To the best of my understanding: They are first generation Nigerian-American — children of immigrants — who apparently traveled to Nigeria around the time of the fraud.
Because it gives the story some panache. If they were just two run of the mill black guys, it’s just not as interesting?
Dunno, that’s the best I can come up with.
“I’ve been asking that for weeks. It’s almost like the news coverage has been duplicitous or something.”
I dunno. I was actually surprised by how many “even if this is not true, I *need* it to be true, so we’ll talk about it as metanarrative” articles/op-eds there were on this. If you’re already that in the bag, why bother sexing it up with a foreigner aspect
Which part of Africa is Jussie from?
I’m confused. I thought the bros were American born but I keep seeing Nigerian in the narratives. Is this another I missed by going to bed early?
Well, gosh, that was fun. It has been snowing off and on since Saturday night (more on than off). Today, we got a little bit of a break. For a while there, you could actually see your shadow. I decided it was the best chance I was going to get to clear the 24+ inches of snow off the deck and see if I could bash my way up and out of. the driveway. What a rodeo. I made it to the road and did a run to the grocery store. For the second time in fifteen years, I decided to leave the truck up at the end of the driveway by the road. Staggering through the knee deep snow with the groceries was no fun.
The punch line? My weather window slammed about about the time I was walking out of the grocery store, and now it’s snowing again.
Yay, springtime.
Staggering through the knee deep snow with the groceries was no fun.
How many times did you pass the kids’ sled sticking out of a snowbank?
I fully expect SugarFree to retain counsel and get on to suin’!
In this article, some lowly journo hits their daily word count by picking a tweet at random and writing about it.
So basically every OT post at glibs.
Ouch
I don’t know what you’re talking about.
I do think that this guy has it right, though. He’s definitely owning the libs today.
He has noticed me! Now I can resist even better.
In our defense, sometimes there’s boobs.
Sometimes, other options.
“Lake Erie first lake to be granted same rights as a human
Feb. 27 (UPI) — Voters in Toledo, Ohio, have become the first in the nation to grant a lake the same rights as a human being.
The Lake Erie Bill of Rights passed a special election vote Tuesday, giving the fourth largest of the Great Lakes “the right to exist, flourish and naturally evolve.”
The new law gives citizens of Toledo the right to sue any other person, farm or corporation violating the lake’s rights — such as a company, farm or government municipality that is polluting the lake.
By Wednesday morning, a nearby farm had filed suit in federal court challenging the constitutionality of the new law. The Drewes Farms Partnership claimed the bill puts its family farm at risk, creating liability if any fertilizer runoff from their farm enters Lake Erie.
The push to grant Lake Erie such rights began shortly after the Toledo Water Crisis in August 2014. At that time, toxic algae blooms in the lake, caused mainly by chemical fertilizer runoff from area farms, became so thick that Toledo’s drinking water was unsafe. Neither boiling nor filtering would make the water safe, the city said.”
Well it IS full of shit…
I fully expected the link to go to Babylon Bee.
Will it set itself on fire in protest?
“The new law gives citizens of Toledo the right to sue…”
Surely they already had that right, or didn’t. What are they thinking?
Judge: You don’t have standing here.
Toledo: We, um, voted to give ourselves standing.
Judge: Oh, well, in that case, go right ahead.
A most likely scenario.
I read over the text briefly. They should have called the
Ohio attorney’s employment act.
Uffda. What is it with you Clevelanders (sure the byline says Columbus, but I know that the Chief Wahoo shitlords are really behind this)?
Can you not keep yourself from ripping off the noble Native Americans for even a day or so?
This is obviously you white eyes stealing legal theory from the proud Ojibwe of Minnesoda.
The only thing you did is swap a lake for wild rice. Joe Biden would be proud of you guys.
Meh, Toledo may as well be Michigan. Almost as non-Ohioan (and useless) as Cincinnati.
African American Minstrel Performers
Unlike the majority of white blackface performers in the 1800s who were born in Northern cities prior to the Civil War, most African American blackface minstrel performers were born after the Civil War and in Southern cities. However, the differences between white and African American minstrel performers do not stop there. Although the age of urban industrialization brought great opportunity for whites in America, according to Karen Sotiropoulos, “for black Americans, the 1890s ushered in a decade of shrinking possibilities, and artists and activists alike desperately sought any avenue for advancement.” African American artists saw their chance for advancement and financial security on the minstrel stage. These artists migrated out of the South and traveled to the West and New York City and formed minstrel groups who advertised their authentic blackness as a selling point to Northern audiences.
Like their white counterparts before them, they “blackened up,” sang, danced, and discussed provocative issues like sex in their shows. The structure of their performances and their removal of 19th century Victorian conventions was typical for all minstrel shows at the time. However, black minstrel performers felt the added responsibility to counter the stereotypes of black identity as laughable, primitive and overly sensual, leading them to develop a self-presentation on stage that balanced racist stereotypes and political commentary. African American blackface performers were also very aware of their off-stage public presentation and conducted themselves in a way to oppose the fictional representations of blacks they performed onstage. Their performances appealed to white audiences but also catered to the black middle class primarily because of the performers’ connection with activist organizations, publications and presentations. Black performers’ association with these groups and their popularization with white audiences.
I posted this because I got to thinking about shows on TV such as Braxton Family Values. These are black
folksperformers appealing to a white audience via some of the worst stereotypes of black folk. Just a thought.Maury Povich has been thriving on that for decades.
Wifey and I, just yesterday, watched a great documentary on the PBS about Sammy Davis Jr.. Very touching and fascinating; he performed in blackface as a young fellow and the fully horrible Harry Cohn threatened to kill him if he didn’t dump Kim Novak and marry a black lady within 48 hours.
Blackface related: Ralph Northam’s family owned at least 84 slaves
Much more plausible that they all sit around bemoaning the lack of “help” anymore.
That last paragraph seems familiar for some reason.
“PERIOD DRAMA Sex coach smears menstrual blood on her face to show that periods are ‘beautiful’ and ‘powerful’
Demetra, from California, has vowed to post photos of her blood every month”
This is why we can’t have nice things.
Your expertise needed: We pass the Temple regularly and it looks interesting. How much do I have to slip a bishop to get a recommend?
$20 is $20, right?
That’s what I figured, but your knowledge is more up to date than mine.
Will I need a clip-on foreskin?
We don’t screen for that.
He probably won’t even ask about your orphans.
Same as downtown.
You choke the bishop OMWC.
What’s her name? Demento?
Who hasn’t appeared in redface at least once in their lives?
To tie-in with the blackface comments above: Should we call this a menstrual show?
That deserves some kind of gif.
There is nothing funny about menstruation, period.
With ragtime music?
*changes ringtone*
Nope, I’m not going to go with the flow on this one.
You men seize every opportunity to make puns.
They just like padding the comments.
Well, it is that time of the month.
Hey now! Put a cork in it!
We wouldn’t want anybody to think that we were sloughing off.
Men’ll pause when the time comes.
This thread has to be a new low, even for this place.
Well done.
I’m going to go vomit for a while. Back in a bit.
Sex coach? I think she is doing this wrong.
She failed. What she actually did was to reinforce the image that they are gross and dirty and that women are f**kin crazy when they are on them
WTF, Canada?
Hey, hey, I’m sure Quebec is up in arms over this…thing.
Hmm, who do we know that is both Italian and Canadian?
That the ‘food pr0n” equivalent of a snuff film.
Wood.
Needs Canadian Bacon.
These are our betters and are the only people who should be allowed to carry guns.
lol that’s hilarious. but i thought they trained for this stuff? I mean if he cant even shoot a little fox safely without capping himself, how is he ever gonna murder someone’s dog?
Odds are the dog will be on a leash
And attempting to lick him.
I bet the real story is either he shot himself during drawing or was shot by the other officer.
What does the bodycam footage show?
Climbing over a fence with a glock in his hand and a finger on the trigger.
That I can see also. Jumping over a fence to avoid a fox while holding a firearm sounds ridiculous. Why wouldn’t he just shoot it instead of trying to flee?
Nunuvero’s gun went off as he landed
Could also be a Sig.
I warned you!
Why wouldn’t the response be – “Oh, a fox. On your way li’l fella.” Or perhaps the operator fielding the initial call could have chastised and shamed the caller for bothering the police about a fox.
They thought it might be rabid.
“suspected rabid” fox.
If it charged him, it probably was rabid.
Yeap, most likely.
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
over the lazy pig.
That’s the fact, Jack!
Make a new plan, Stan.
So he went up against a fox, with backup, ended up fleeing in terror, and shooting himself falling over a fence. A fox. Terror of mice and chickens. A fox. Apex predator my ass.
It was a rabid fox. Rabid.
Rabid animal call = someone saw an animal in town, and the heroic first responders need a reason to get their shoot on.
Had a coworker get attacked by a rabid raccoon, beat it to death, and carried its carcass to the house to make sure it got tested. But he’d been a pitcher on the Central American beisbol circuit, so rabid fans didn’t phase him.
FFS. A fox is like a cat. Hopefully bodycam will be released.
I’m happy he lived. So can you fire his sorry ass now? Is it REALLY asking too much of cops to require that they not be complete fucknuts?
This will be added to the list of “Hero Officers Injured in the Line of Duty”. You can’t fire a Hero Officer Injured in the Line of Duty.
It’ll also be a gun-related injury stat in the quest for more gun control.
Fuck it. Just burn it all down.
Maybe we should all vote D in 2020 and go full Venezuela.
WTF is Momo? My 8 year old came home from school today in a tizzy because they had an assembly to warn them of some thing called Momo which tells kids to do bad things on Youtube or it comes to their house and kills their parents. Why are they scaring the children like this? She would have never heard of such foolishness had the school not told her of it. Icing on the cake is our lady-cat, the only cat that tolerates the children, is named Morgana and answers to the diminutive – Momo.
Momo is Japanese for Streisand.
I bet she’s a peach of a girl.
Momo
Not sure why they are scary. The price?
But yeah, I guess it’s possible that they could kill parents, but usually it takes some irresponsible driving.
Stupid bullshit causes idiots to panic.
Swear to god, I thought when Boomers retired, people would be less retarded about the Internet. Not behave less retardedly on it, just less retarded about it.
Oh FFS, there was a post about this the other day here. It’s some character from some game that people are convinced is being used by ‘hackers’ to get little kids to hurt themselves/kill themselves.
If I were in your shoes I might already be at the school with a bat. What kind of demented idiot has an assembly to spread a thing like this? Even if you buy the fear mongering contact the parents, don’t scare the kids.
They feel it’s their job as In loco parentis (Latin for crazy parents).
“What kind of demented idiot”
…aspires to spend the rest of their life in school after have been forced to spend 12 years in one?
But Stockholm Syndrome is a thing.
Got a letter from my 5th graders school about the same thing today. The principal and councelor had a meeting with each class individually to discuss the momo challenge
Sounds like Slenderman version 2.0.
Except Slenderman is actually creepy, that think looks like a puppet from The Dark Crystal, or Fragglerock
How can you be so calm? IT’S LINKED TO 100 CHILD DEATHS ALREADY!!! PANIC PANIC PANIC!!!!
Oh, wait, it’s actually just the latest viral hoax. It’s as real as lipstick parties, vodka soaked tampons, and the tide pod eating epidemic.
*rainbow parties
TOS had an article about the Momo BS today.
And they also had Gillespie interviewing sorryass Weekly Standard refugees Charlie Sykes and Jim Swift for no apparent reason.
Ahhh. This explains why my wife was trying to remove YouTube from the kids’ Kindles last night. I was talking to her in the hotel and not following. The Breakfast Club was starting. John Hughes’s lesson was that poors can teach the rich important life lessons.
Beer, Bras and Brats
Sorry, paywalled, but really good and an excellent reminder that the market is a fickle (yet beautifully efficient) bitch.
So over under on when it comes for Facebook?
Thank god the Giants did not sign Harper to such a deal, although I don’t think they were really a serious consideration for him. He was just using them as leverage. I think the Phillies are going to regret that one a few years down the line. At least he isn’t going to the fucking Dodgers.
Wouldn’t you want the Dodgers to make a regrettable signing?
I don’t think it is horrible, just did not make sense at all for the Giants that need a whole lot more pieces. I do think they signed him for far too long, but no way did I want to see him on the Dodgers and getting them to a championship. I don’t think they will regret it in Philly for a few more years.
Mah Boi* Booker is working hard on his democratic nomination.
Cory Booker introduces bill to legalize marijuana nationwide
Take that, Kamala! This is how you get ahead of the pack.
*I don’t like him, I just had him pegged as the nominee six months ago on account of being most Obama-like, and a feeling that the “ethnic” part of the Dem base isn’t in the mood to listen to hectoring harridans with pale complexion. Also, I believe “boi”, unlike “boy”, is not a racist term but if I’m wrong, pls Edit Fairy, nuke my Canadian racism.
It be a true Spartacus move to adopt a signature issue that Trump can snatch away from him with an Executive Order moving the marihuanas as Schedule V (alongside Robitussin AC).
I don’t smoke but that would be the awesomest.
Trump ain’t doing it. He don’t like drugs, his base don’t like drugs, devil weed stays where it is.
He might sign the bill if it passes GOP Senate, but Booker is counting on it failing there. That way he can pitch the “Elect me and I EO the weeds!”
He don’t like drugs, his base don’t like drugs
Drugs = crack, meth, and heroin, you are right.
Drugs = pot, well, his base is not nearly as opposed.
He might sign the bill if it passes GOP Senate
Full legalization would require a bill.
Rescheduling can be done in a day by the AG (if memory serves).
Probably can, but he isn’t sticking The Hair over that parapet.
“Everything that exists has a specific nature, and possesses characteristics that are a part of what it is. A is A. And no matter what reality he calls home, Luthor is Luthor.”
Trump is Trump, a teetotaler progressive Boomer with a boner about Mexican border. He is not unilaterally changing 80-odd years of US drug policy to own libs.
You know, if he actually did push descheduling, all of that *excess* pot in CA would be exportable to all of the other states. And CA wouldn’t collect their stupid taxes on it because those are retail oriented.
I see a market opportunity for grey market reimporting of that untaxed weed back into CA.
The question is: Does he like being President more than he hates weed? If it helps him win, I could see him doing it.
I could be higher than a kite and I STILL ain’t voting Democrat.
There is a rather good bakery in Brooklyn called Cake Boi; I think you’re in the clear.
To those helping me withe the gun debate on the other thread it turns out only in NY, Ct, Hawaii, Mass and NJ can the cities change the gun laws so he kinda got me there.
NEVER APOLOGIZE
But not in CA and his website says CA has the bestest on gun laws. And they have a higher homicide rate than UT (one of them nasty ol’ red states).
I honestly don’t think gun laws have that much a relation to violent crime. Given comparative demographics and density (like we can compare Chicago and Houston) you might be able to draw some conclusions. Vermont and Mississippi have very similar gun laws, and very different crime rates, because they are very very different states in a lot of other ways. Race and racial diversity, education, poverty, culture, and even climate all affect crime rates.
I favor freedom because it’s freedom, not because it might juke the stats one way or another. I also think freedom provides the best results, in aggregate, but that’s not why I am in favor of it.
You’ll be shocked to learn that Massachusetts still has shootings, despite the strict gun laws.
Massachusetts has a higher per capita rate of violent crime of any New England state.
And they effectively outlaw self defense for the poor.
Gosh! It’s almost like the two things are related!
Too bad nobody wants to have an honest “conversation” about any of those things.
Even if localities can’t change the actual law, administration of the laws can vary widely, particularly aspects that leave it up to the discretion of the localities (may issue, etc).
Quick scan of earlier posts and I didn’t see it covered, so…
12-year-old New York boy arrested in connection with anti-Semitic graffiti at school: Police
“On Fri, 2-22-19, anti-Semitic graffiti was found throughout a Queens playground. The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force now have the suspect—a 12 year old male—in custody,” Shea tweeted Wednesday. “Great job @NYPDHateCrimes No matter the face of hate, the NYPD, partnered with the community, has ZERO tolerance.”
I wonder how many hours a day they blow on this stuff already. I got a steady diet of it forty years ago. But a few kids don’t get the message so the obvious solution is to ramp up the reeducation camps for everyone, I guess.
It’s not about the content, it’s about the indoctrination. Just like with laws, it’s not about laws, it’s about having them on the books so you can enforce them.
“There’s no place for hate in this country, and leaders have to show that it’s unacceptable.”
Needs moar education on hatred. How much boot stomping would it take to have “no place for hate in this country”? These people are insane.
But a few kids don’t get the message so the obvious solution is to ramp up the reeducation camps for everyone, I guess.
I’d hazard to guess that they create more hate crimes by making it a constant target for boring indoctrination than they cure through the boring indoctrination.
Yeah, and there’s also the inconvenient fact that kids still have parents, and parents teach things. Maybe ship them to the camps.
Oh, good. They’ve got the 6th grader armed with chalk in custody. I feel safer already.
Playground-to-prison pipeline!
Via telegraph from Cloud Cuckoo Land
America’s most productive cities are notoriously short of housing. High home prices make it hard for people who aren’t inherently wealthy to afford to live in cities like Boston, New York, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. This problem is costly. The barrier to urban newcomers reduces total U.S. economic growth by 36 percent, recent research shows.
High-speed rail could help. That is, if America were more willing to embrace that form of transportation. Just this month, both the California governor and the U.S. president poured cold water on plans for a fast train from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
————
Given the huge disparities in productivity across U.S. cities and the opposition to building significant quantities of new housing, fast rail transit is a feasible way to provide affordable access to jobs. Consider that the median home price in San Jose, California, is $631 per square foot, four times as high as that in Merced, which lies 100 miles away. If it were possible to commute at high speeds from Merced to San Jose, workers could have both good jobs and homes within their means.
A short high-speed rail line from Merced to San Jose would obviously be less expensive to build than one from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and the line could always be extended in the future. This would curtail costs while still triggering a construction boom that would create new opportunities, especially for relatively low-paid workers.
————-
To be sure, high-speed rail is expensive to build. But the economic payoff can also be great. Fast trains allow people to work and play in big cities and still live somewhere they can afford.
If only we had some really neat-o trains, this country could be something special.
He’s probably right, though. It could very well be true that building a 200mph train is more likely to happen than opening up the housing market in San Jose or San Francisco.
Mass transportation, particularly subway/trolley/interurbans/rail, help drive the first real wave of suburbification before autos. The sort of sprawl that modern planned living and transportation advocates would be aghast at. I can’t imagine commuting a 100 miles so those people can live in real houses instead of Soviet dormitories will pass muster beyond selling a worthless choochoo. The whole housing “crisis” is one giant government breaking legs and handing out crutches manufactured BS.
“Mass transportation, particularly subway/trolley/interurbans/rail, help drive the first real wave of suburbification before autos”
Eh, I grew up one of those 1920s streetcar suburbs. It was denser than a modern subdivision, with sidewalks, shade trees, nice quiet streets, no driveways, two nice little retail blocks with small shops that could be bought, sold, rented. Constantly churning. There was also two nice little apartment buildings on the retail streets. Absolutely fantastic neighborhood. We never lacked for either privacy or community.
Do you still live in the same type enviroment?
Since you say you grew up there but dont mention still living in such a utopia I suppose not.
I also have fond memories of growing up in the country on a 200 acre farm.
I don’t live there anymore because I can’t afford it. The neighborhood has like one house a month go on sale, and the people selling it get their asking price within 3 weeks.
There are tons of people that commute from outside Tokyo into the city everyday. 2, 3 hour commutes aren’t unusual and now housing prices in the burbs are getting close to those where I live in the city. Your high speed trains aren’t going to fix high rent prices. It’s just going to push people further and further into the sticks and then when they get to the sticks, some local government will impose regulations again. Never ending cycle.
The VSTIWCS (“vistywicks”) approach: Virtue Signaling To Idiots With Crazy Shite
Sounds like an opportunity for an enterprising billionaire to make a killing. Are there any of those in the San Jose area? Oh, they mean the taxpayers have to take on that risk? OK, then.
The problem is that the British have no sense of the actual size of the United States
I had a friend who wanted to come over for a week from London to visit. She wanted to go see Miami, New Orleans, Nashville, and the Blue Ridge mountains. I laughed, and pointed out that it would take about 4 hours just to get to the state line from Tampa. And not even an interesting state line. They really have no concept about how big this place is…
Met someone the other day who’s going to Australia for about a week. They “plan” to see Hobart, Sydney & Ayers Rock.
I visited Beijing, Shanghai, and Xian in a week. Airplanes helped.
Yes and I suppose there might even almost be some logic to such a thing. but if there was then it would be possible to run it at a profit and could be build by private industry.
No, no it could not. The only way that High Speed Rail would actually work for commuters is if it was dedicated point to point with no stops in between. Build a dedicated point to point high speed rail line from Merced to San Jose that can make the trip in say 40 minutes and you have a viable commuting model that can get someone from their home to their office in ~ 90 minutes each way, add just one stop in between and you make that train ride increase in time to over an hour and the full commute to 2 hours each way.
You have to make up your mind, is high speed rail competing with airplanes for a method of inter city traffic or cars for a method of commuting to work every day. The needs for each model are very different and you cannot use the same high speed rail for each.
Except Republikkkins. Every body hates them. And,, if you don’t hate them, you’d best start.
The WWII German sub that was lost due to a toilet malfunction:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfr0nsh0Ghc
The vid says it was due to an overcomplicated German design but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sea Smith, that Schweinhund, had something to do with it.
He needed a condom and the sub was a perfect fit.
Don’t ask why he needed it.
Here’s a shocker. Ilhan Omar is saying antisemitic things again!
I’m sure she just didn’t know that saying that Jews have allegiance to another country over their own is an even older antisemitic canard than the money thing.
Crikey, only a few days ago PETA were slandering the memory of the great Steve Irwin on what would have been his 57th birthday:
I don’t care what they say Steve, I still like you.
My kids loved him. Fuck off PETA.
If PETA doesn’t like it, I’m probably all for it.
It warms my cold, black libertarian heart to see how much *everyone* hates PETA.
And how many animals does PETA kill annually?
Martina Markota: Period facials will “end the stigma”!
I’d like to give the host a facial, if you take my meaning. ///subtlehotness ///notsosubtlejoke
I’m ashamed of my poop. Maybe that’s just social stigma.
That’d be too close to blackface. Unacceptable.
Could you imagine what it must have been like to pick cotton all day, boy? – Pam Northam
First lady of Virginia Pam Northam handed cotton to African-American children on a tour of the governor’s mansion and asked them to imagine being slaves in the fields, the mother of one of the children alleged.
Leah Dozier Walker, a state employee who is the director of the Office of Equity and Community Engagement at the Virginia Department of Education, wrote to Pam Northam’s office on Monday alleging that on a tour for state Senate pages, the first lady spoke in the mansion’s kitchen cottage — where slaves used to work — and gave black pages, including Walker’s eighth grade daughter, pieces of cotton. Walker’s daughter has said she did not take the cotton.
“During the tour of the Mansion Cottage, (Walker’s daughter) and two of her (fellow) pages were asked to hold cotton that the First Lady retrieved from a bowl on a nearby table,” Walker wrote in the letter. “Mrs. Northam then asked these three pages (the only African-American pages in the program) if they could imagine what it must have been like to pick cotton all day.”
See?! She is a total bigot that definitely was trying to be a total bigot to these kids and definitely was not simply trying to help the kids learn about and reflect on history and the people that lived it.
She did nothing wrong. The outraged kids and their mother need to grow thicker skins.
Did she give everyone cotton or just the black people?
All the kids apparently:
https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/virginia-lady-pam-northam-allegedly-gave-black-kids/story?id=61370441
Damn, I was hoping she gave the white kids whips and any Irish and Asians spike drivers.
They’re not actually offended.
It’s performative outrage for social credit.
Which means they’re just assholes.
^^
So the wife asks me to go grocery shopping with her yesterday. Being the dummy that I am, I say “OK”. We’re shopping and I put some cofffee in the cart while she’s off looking at a zucchini. She comes back, sees the coffee, takes it out of the cart and returns it to the shelf. I’m looking at her like “Oh no you didn’t just do that.” She puts a different, cheaper brand in the cart and goes back on her merry shopping ways. I’m fucking fuming as I’m pushing the goddamn cart around, but I don’t say anything cuz I don’t wanna start a scene in the store.
We get home and I lose my shit. How the fuck would you feel if I did that? That coffee you bought tastes like shit and you don’t drink it anyways! Blah, blah, blah. Screw it. I go in my home office, lock the door and listen to some White Snake as I play Risk against the computer. Ukraine is mine, MFer.
After a couple hours, I calm down and think I probably over reacted so I’ll apologize at least for that. Walk in the living room and she’s drinking my last beer, shit eating grin on her face. I was so pissed that I just laughed. Well played little lady. I’m still smiling at that move.
“So the wife asks me to go grocery shopping with her yesterday.”
You didn’t actually… never mind, I read on…
“she’s drinking my last beer”
At least it was the shitty beer she she got after putting your good beer back in the cooler, right?
That is the silver lining I missed. Thanks, I feel better already.
“while she’s off looking at a zucchini. ”
Must resist comment ?
Ukraine is mine, MFer
That took a while to sink in. Granted, I did take Manchuria first.
Do comfort women put coffee back on the shelf?
They prefer Chock Full of Nuts.
Been there.
Just go get what you want and put it in a separate cart. That made my point well enough that we avoided that conversation again.
My wife will buy the organic stuff, not everything but the leafy stuff. I show her the organic bananas and fruit and she turns up her nose. I’ve given up trying to steer her towards anything generic. Usually I get 1/2 the grocery list and I can zoom around the store in 1/3 of the time that’s she’s looking for the perfect piece of meat. How she can spend more time looking at a cabbage than it takes me to pick out a car, I dunno. Admittedly, I have spent some time on research though.
off looking at a zucchini
These euphemisms are getting a tad personal.
She was just looking
That’s some passive aggression dude. I hope you come home from the store next time with a case of that coffee. Maybe some condoms too just for good measure
So, has everyone been informed about the new most scariest drug sweeping the nation and turning the children into zombies? Well, it’s vanilla extract. That’s right, vanilla extract. Kids are getting drunk and turning into hard core alcoholics on it.
For crikey sake, this bullshit was making he local news when I was a little kid. Had to recycle that? Seriously, how many bottles of vanilla extract does it take to get drunk? 100? 1000? Never underestimate the power of the media to be totally stupid.
Stupid sells, they are competing for eyes, ears, and clicks. You go ahead and launch a ‘serious’ news channel. You’ll be out of buisness in 6 months. Don’t blame the media for giving people what they want. Might as well tell Budweiser to stop selling Bud Light because it’s shit beer.
Didn’t Ford say that if you asked people what they want, they’d say “faster horses”? Eventually this media meltdown will stop and someone will find a way to provide a semblance of reasonable content.
He’s making my point, People said they wanted “Faster Horses” but bought cars, today people say they want “Serious News” but they buy CNN, FOX, MSNBC, Breitbart, etc…Expressed verses revealed whatnot.
The current situation is: shitty, biased news. True, you can flip Ford’s saying to fit the position that revealed preferences are what matter. You could also say that it applies to a situation that is intolerable in its present form. Media is going to change and it’s hard to imagine it getting more vapid. Future is the future, so who knows?
Stupid sells
Meet “Dog Park Debbie“. I’m so glad that alliterative racist white people headlines are back!
PS. I didn’t read the story. I’m assuming it’s stupid.
To be fair, it’s the New York Post.
Hey now. We know someone who was published in their illustrious pages.
The NY Post reports on someone being unbelievably stupid. That one doesn’t bother me so much. Granted, not reporting on the civil war in Yemen at the expense of stories like that is not great.
How about the fact that it’s their top story?
Didn’t see that. Maybe nothing worse happened in all of NY on that day. Didja think of that?
It happened in Massachusetts.
*Taps out*
It’s about 35% alcohol so about four shots worth?
Wait til the media seizes on coumarin in Mexican vanilla extract.
Real Vanilla extract is not cheap. My guess is most people have imitation in their cabinets and the kids arent getting drunk at all.
“Seriously, how many bottles of vanilla extract does it take to get drunk? 100? 1000? ”
On the upside, drinking that much vanilla turns your shit into air freshener.
My wife uses 80 proof vodka to make ours.
“Dearest Ellen:
Perhaps no one has told you, but being a lesbian doesn’t grant you the right to be a total bitch free from criticism. Contrary to what it seems many in the militant LGBTQ club believe, your sexual friction preference doesn’t give you special rights. Including the right to prance through life without anyone mocking you, or calling you to the carpet for your errors.
Your most recent error was blaming Vice President Pence for the “hate crime” against Jussie Smollett. A hate crime as real as your grasp on accountability. You didn’t wait for facts. You didn’t hit pause before blaming the LGBTQ’s favorite boogieman for what turned out to be smoke, mirrors and a handwritten check. No, no, like all entitled leftists, you had an agenda to push and damn the consequences.
You had the chance to be the bigger person, to admit you’d rushed to judgment like a lesbian running to Orbitz, to take the high ground after slumming it in the hate blame game for a few weeks. But, you didn’t. In your Hollywood Reporter column, you wrote:
I had no reason to doubt Jussie. My work on Gaycation — the docuseries I produced to chronicle LGBTQ+ stories from around the world — introduced me to many survivors of hate violence. I know how prevalent and pernicious it can be. If this situation was staged, it could make victims even more reluctant to report these crimes. Very real crimes.
Emphasis mine. Not to be that grammar nazi or anything, but you misspelled “I apologize for my giant f*ckup.” May want to have a few more people proof your column next time, Ellen dearest.”
like a lesbian running to Orbitz
What? Is this metaphor (or simile, I can’t be arsed to remember the difference) some pop culture reference or does it make sense and I’m missing somthing?
I guess Orbitz is the U-Haul of travel websites.
I still don’t get why a lesbian would be running there.
They cater?
Ah, I thought you typo’d TSA:) lol
Maybe this will cause some people to reconsider their support for “emotional support animal” hooey.
I would like to see that but don’t have much faith that it will happen.
HooeyHooey!?
You know, I could fix that, and maybe even figure out why it happened, but I won’t.
I guess attention-seeking artists need emotional support, too.
So for her, emotional support means she needs help being an attention whore.
If only.
1) everybody knows it’s just an excuse to bring your pet on vacation with you
2) in the few legitimate cases, it strikes me that anybody who can’t make it through a flight without fido probably should take a car/boat/or train. Thats what people with crippling fear of flying used to do.
3) my personal experience with emotional support dogs is that they’re poorly trained, loud, and into everything. If the airlines allow them, they should at least force the owner to buy an entire row so that there’s nobody else for pookie to lunge at when he feels territorial.
