Where there’s walls and Banjo’s kids, these’s cleanin’ to do. So while she does that, I’ll be the Linksmaster for the Day. Starting with birthdays, which today include my third-favorite US President (really, third and fourth) Grover “Where’s my Pa?” Cleveland; Oberlin’s finest graduate and surprising prankster, Edward Everett Horton; Austin-based country rocker James McMurtry; and a player to be named later.

It’s a conspiracy. There’s no other explanation.

Thank you for your service. You are a power-hungry asshat that was willing to sell everyone short so you could get a like from fake news people, so fuck you, I am happy you are gone.
I will always remember that fuckstick for voting down the repeal of the ACA in service of his own ego.
That is one of the many times he fucked over people just so he could play it up with the fucking cocktail party circuit asshats.
No. This was clearly spite. He was a dead man. Trump, his late life nemesis was elected, after he had been thouroughly rejected. The left was willing to shower him with accolades because he was never going to be a threat.
What really made me dislike the guy was that it should have been obvious to him that the ONLY time the left treated him nice when was when he was fucking over his constituents. He still went along with them, even after he became the literal Hitler when he ran against the left’s golden boy. After that you would figure he would have realized they were just using them and out of principle refused to let them use him. But he doubled down on fucking over his own to get meaningless platitudes and accolades from his political enemies. What a cunt.
“My father lives rent free in your head,” she added on Sunday in a tweet that was later deleted.
So you father did go to hell, eh?
Based on the shit he did, I wouldn’t be surprised.
She’s got 40 lbs of gravel living rent-free in her ass.
Imagine what the View of the View looks like from behind. Shudder.
I mean, he did visit him in Christmas Eve. Also, it seems to have been a mutual swap.
I’m going to have to go write some up before I can follow that instruction.
Markets are markets, dig? – peak hipster?
Please yes.
“Markets are markets, dig?”
Stupid hipster commies fail to understand the basics of economics and the law of supply & demand. News @ 11!
Re: conspiracy to kill people from the Ferguson “protests”. Weren’t those riots huge? I want to know the statistical chance of them dying before saying it was anything but random. The two in the car sounds like gang violence.
Young black men in a dangerous part of town dying? Hunh. Couldn’t have predicted that.
Next you’re gonna tell me that gangbangers in Chicago and Baltimore have a mysteriously shorter lifespan than average.
The fact that this sad reality gets ignored by the woke crowd so they can sell some myth is dispiriting. Either they are evil because they don’t care about these people, or worse, because they simply choose to ignore them because this can’t be made to serve the narrative/agenda.
Springsteen is a solid meh for me.
I don’t dislike him so much as hate his fans who think he’s some great rock n roll icon.
There’s a lot of bands like that. The fanbase makes me hate the band.
I tried to get into Springsteen but it never took. Wait – is that a STEVE SMITH quote? ::shrugs::
Nice. Some of Springsteen’s stuff is OK. Some is pure shit. The guy himself is an asshat. STEVE SMITH should totes drill his ass.
I like of his stuff, can’t stand some of it.
I have to play this on the first really nice day in May.
Granted, he’s no Mellencamp. Or was he?
I ilke Darkness on the Edge of Town. The other stuff is okay.
Same for me. I do kind of like the Seeger Sessions. And Born In The USA came out when I was 12 and just discovering “new” rock and roll (I grew up listening to 50’s-60’s rock), so I have a soft spot for that album.
Fuck Pete Seeger with Stalin’s petrified dick.
Yeah, I know…but not a single song on the album was written by Seeger. In fact, the majority are “traditional” or folk songs.
His early stuff was great.
Yes, I really liked everything up to and including The River. I still can listen to Greetings from Asbury Park over and over. But in 1984, when New Wave music was amazing, popular media was completely ignoring it in lieu of nonstop Madonna, Michael Jackson and Springsteen. And I never had much time for anything from Bruce from that point on.
There was a really great article/interview with his former producer before Springsteen made the jump, which is probably Born to Run. Anyhow, the guy said, “Bruce had a choice, he could be a really great songwriter with a good band if he kept me, or he could dump me and go with Landau and be a pop-superstar.
Markets are markets, dig?
Strangely the local farmer markets have things like pineapples and bananas, corn a month before the local season. Our local protectors have save us from the gardener trying to sell a few radishes out of the back of his truck by requiring a daily permit every day. Sad
Yep, I noticed this too (how could you not notice it?) The local supermarkets have, literally, the exact same food and they are open more than four hours a week.
Maybe its different in warmer areas with longer growing seasons, but if you want actual local-farm-produced food around here, you join a CSA and pay out the ass because shipping on a small scale 50 miles is more expensive than bulk shipping pineapples from Hawaii.
I’ll take Springsteen thank you very much. There’s something off about Beto.

There has to be racism somewhere in that statement.
Re the Aussie politician. That naval guy’s body language said it all. Imagine having to explain yourself to ignorant asshat. What more, they get all indignant and interrupt whenever someone schools them. I’ve seen Kamala Harris and Ilhan Omar do that. Arrogant twits.
It’s a thing with Western politicians. Call in the military brass and shit on them because you can. Partly to crap on people they hate and rub their supposedly higher status in the Generals’ faces. They also think this makes points with voters, maybe it does with really dumb ones.

+1 Call Me Senator
I’d love for someone in one of these hearings to refer to the congresscritters as “Mister Citizen” and “Madam Citizen”.
My favorite was when DiFi got pissed that the admiral called her Ma’am instead of Senator. It showed t we o things, she was ignorant of military customs (could be forgivable, though comes off bad), and she’s obsessed with title.
That was Boxer.

Many of my best hangovers in life were the result of a late drunken night of Euchre. Man, that’s a fun game to play while drinking.

I can’t tell. The phrasing of the request is civil, but grudgingly so, and vague as all hell about why they thought it was any of their business.
That brought a tear to my eye.

Married PE teacher, 25 had ‘sex with pupil while his mum wasn’t home’
The teacher is said to have had sex with the boy, 17, at least three times while tutoring him off-campus.
Tutoring him in PE? Well, actually, I guess…
Tutoring for PE? Sounds like a porno movie plot.
I think we should start contemplating changing the way educators are taught. It’s clear that women who are graduating from these institutons think they can have their way with these boys. This needs to stop. #NotYourMan
Those 17 year olds probably seem so mature compared to the 22 year old education majors they dated in college.
^^
Not just seems; are.
Why do you hate teenage dudes so much?
Yet another example of feminine toxicity in our matriarchal society.
She a solid English 10, tho.
Honestly, I get the whole power dynamic bit, but what possible leverage does a PE teacher have over a 17-year-old by virtue of her position in the school? And run past me again the context in which one might require an out-of-school PE tutor? Sorry, these are two young adults less than ten years apart in age. This sounds like consent was freely and eagerly given.
She’s a government agent with all the power and “FYTW” authority that comes with being in an authority position at a government institution.
Imagine that this was a 25 year old TSA agent screwing a 17 year old frequent flyer after another agent took her back into the back room for a strip search. The fact that the specific TSA agent wasn’t the one detaining her and didn’t have the power to release her doesn’t mean that she’s under any less duress than if it were, in fact, a TSA agent with power to alter her outcome.
That is how you write a porn script.
If she was a cop I’d cede the point in a heartbeat. I’m just not sure based on what I saw in the article that there was a “power imbalance” situation going on so much as a poorly-adjusted young woman and an impressionable, testosterone-drunk young man flooding a room with pheromones and making bad decisions.
I still can’t believe the US and Europe have done nothing about this:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ukraine-crisis-crimea-putin/putin-in-crimea-for-annexation-anniversary-launches-power-stations-idUSKCN1QZ1AI
Now might be a good time to hit them with sanctions, but I don’t believe this is a thing worth going to war over by any stretch. I don’t like it at all, but Putin knew Obama wasn’t going to take a real stand over it and the EU can’t and won’t really draw a line in the sand.

“they lead to changes that really destroy our economy”
A proposition that has almost no support in science. Say what you want about consensus, the consensus from economists is that the cost of global warming is far cheeper than trying to minimize it.
Those economists are not the experts. Experts are people that back up the cultist’s demand for a collectivist world order government that will save us through wealth redistribution schemes & scams that will enrich them people at the top while buying allegiance for the people at the way bottom that want free shit paid for by others. Anyone else is in it for nefarious purposes, and can’t be trusted…
His resume reads like a classic Democrat Ivy League dipshit with exemplary knowledge of politics and zero knowledge of the ecoomy. The closest he came was management consulting, which usually entails the exact opposite ideas necessary for a business to thrive.
He seems like a nice guy, but of course, being a modern democrat he was to basically sign on to full-blown socialism in order to compete.
The Overton window is being spread awful wide.
Is this Overton girl hot?
Yep. She’ll leave the window open.
He brought a rug? But she already has a rug! A blue one!
And again with this “poll shows Democrats and Republicans all support the Green New Deal” horseshit. That is how you fake news.
Or, perhaps, going from a business model of “cheaper than the grocery store because cutting out the middlemen” to “charging twice as much for an inconvenient location at sporadic times” might lead to everyone not into Whole Foods from shopping there?
Or that a huge amount of the ‘farmers’ there are just people reselling produce from wholesalers.
It’s like walking through Pike’s Place market, a lot of them are just hucksters selling someone their vanity.
Yup. Also, farmers markets need to achieve a certain size before they’re worth going to. The closest one to my house is 1 produce tent, 1 skincare tent, and 1 insurance tent. The prices at the produce tent are exorbitant, and the rest of the stuff is just a waste of time.
The one we usually go to are at least 5 produce tents and many more specialty food tents ( baked goods, coffee, cut flowers, gardening seedlings, etc.) the competition drives the prices down and makes it actually worth our time.
The VA Is Socialism in Action. We Must Defend It From Privatization.
The right is hell-bent on dismantling the most progressive agency in government.
I was visiting a VA hospital this weekend, and an exact quote regarding patient comfort was “Pillows are a luxury around here” meaning none would be provided and those brought in by family were liable to disappear.
“Veterans overwhelmingly approve of the care they receive in the VA.”
There are some dudes on wait list who may beg to differ. Oh wait, they died trying to get treated.
Dipshit.
I have purposefully avoided ever needing anything from the VA and have made sure to ALWAYS have my own private insurance, because the VA offering was so great I couldn’t stand it!
This infuriates me. Employer provided health coverage is a creation of government tax law and wage controls. The individual insurance market has been devastated by the Feds over a period of decades and now they bemoan that their medical care coverage is tied to their employer.
Nevermind that the FUCKING VA IS AN EMPLOYER PROVIDED HEALTH PLAN. Goddamn idiots.
Yeah. It’s super simple, spend at least 6 years in the active military and boom your done.
“Veterans overwhelmingly approve of the care they receive in the VA. ”
I mean technically it could be correct, you can’t count the ones who died on the waiting list.
Small sample size and an anectdote that might not generalize but in my experience this is a baldfaced lie.
My father and 3 of my Uncles were all in Vietnam and came back with service related disabilities (Agent Orange Exposure) and none of them had anything good to say about the VA.
At one point in time the VA literally lost my father for a week.
He was taken to a local non VA hospital for emergency care, my mother went home to get some supplies for him when it was decided that he was going to be admitted. While she was out the VA instructed the hospital to transfer him to a VA facility as he was their patient and they didn’t want to pay the other hospital’s rates. My mother gets back to the hospital and is told he was transferred the the VA, she calls the VA to find out which hospital he was at and they have no record of his being transferred.
My mother spends the next week battling the VA bureaucracy trying to find him and when she finally does he’s at a facility more than 50 miles away when there were 2 VA hospitals closer and they had not received any medical records on him and as such he was not getting any of the meds he had been on. He’s incoherent and running a fever over 103 and on the verge of being dead as a result.
I can’t say that the VA hospitals were what finally killed my father, but I can say that the only reason they didn’t is because my mother was such a formidable agent advocating for him to get the proper treatment
The VA misdiagnosed my dad for years, a private specialist finally figured out what was wrong–he got better for a year or two–and then the VA pretty much killed him with another misdiagnosis. Crazy stuff.
My dad had an appointment with the VA that they
couldn’twouldn’t do at the local location (an hr away), so I had to drive him down to Milwaukee (2 1/2 hr drive). We get there, ‘Oh, he’s not here today, come back tomorrow.’ Yeah, great service.Party like it is 1999
No. You can do it with $250 in supplies and volunteer painters.
You can do it for the cost of a sign: “Graffiti wall. Pictures of Prince only.”
Some of us voted no. Can I just deduct that percentage?
Sadly, the mural would probably be the best use of $250K from the Legacy Fund than any other stuff. I’d almost be for it if I thought that it meant that there would be 50 fewer grants of $5K for “oral histories” of various things.
Fair point. Still pissed about the whole fiasco.
Tundra, I’m must’ve listened to that Overkill link ten times today. Good stuff.
Excellent! It’s really good. He did a version on a radio station here that stuck with me a long time.
Novel concept: raise the money via GoFundMe, etc. There are plenty of Prince fans in the area who would probably donate.
Sending the right message to residents: “Better hope no other famous people are born here”.
I’d love to be the guy that says “Wait. You need a quarter-of-a-fucking-million-dollars for a mural?”
250,000! wow that’s some gonads there on that guy to ask for that.
But really when it’s brought down to 150,000 and passed that is still a lot of money to through back to the groups that help him get elected.
You know how long it takes a bunch of union hacks to paint a mural, and then the overtime, and the supervisors standing around watching them paint and their overtime? I predict half a mil at least.
That’s racist against Kirby Puckett.
Auction off the privilege of being the one chosen to paint the Prince mural.
Aren’t there already bridges with graffiti?
Hint for beta males: Alpha means never apologizing for joking, or for accurately describing the division of labor in your household. “My job as a politician means I’m away from the home a lot. My wife accepts that, and is a great mother who takes care of the kids in my absence — you know, like Michelle Obama did for Barack.”
I don’t know about you, but I long for a President who grovels to the press.
I long for a President who believes his job consists of vetoing virtually everything Congress does, mass firing anyone employed in a federal job not authorized in Article 1 Section 8, and fending off the impeachment attempts for adhering to his oath of office, from people violating their oaths.
I can vote for this individual…

Utrecht shooting: ‘One dead’ as man opens fire in tram
Damn Dutch Trump Lover!
Did the shooter shout anything during the incident?
Was there a Manifesto or video?
What do we actually know?
The Netherlands official state color is ORANGE. That is all you need to know.
They’re allied with the Irish Unionists?

No, that’s the color of the royal house dating back to the middle ages.
I don’t care what Mister of Orange says. He’s not shtealing thi this color from ush.

Last I experienced it, a lot of Dutch people like to get drunk (on Gin) and buttfuck each other too man.. Don’t just pick on the Irish, even thought I just saw documentaries where Warwick Davis played a Leprechaun that went into the hood and ruined it for them….
It was Trumps fault.
Did the shooter shout anything during the incident?

I Read this as “Utrecht shouting: ‘One dead’ as man opens fire in tram”
I’m trying to enjoy The Punisher Season 2, but the Russia / Socon / Corporate bad guys sub-plot is really annoying me.
I didn’t mind it. I was mildly annoyed by the “bad guy from last season survived after all!” But got over it. The guy playing the hitter for the second did an excellent job, I thought, and the las few episodes really had an interesting take on how the yearning for redemption brought our antagonists into conflict.
Just finished it last night, BTW.
It’s better than the Iron Fist (faint praise), but it seemed like they were trying a little too hard to be contemporary and hit the hipster go-buttons.
Spykids 7 was better than Iron Fist.
I enjoyed most of the 2nd season of Iron Fist.
I thought the Punisher was not enough of a psycho/prepper.
The Punisher survives in a super-hero world by being prepared and ruthless.
It wasn’t bad… I’d give it a mediocre at best. There was definitely some inner conflicts with the writers targeting particular groups and displaying them as bad guys. Now that I think about it, the racism is pretty flagrant.
Since Sloopy is back, I figure it is a good time to throw some shade on Texass. Minnesoda is clearly better than the Lone Star State because it loves its govt.
“Government is not some alien interloper constantly looking for ways to take a few more dollars out of your pocket.”
Citation needed.
Well he’s sort of right, it’s a familiar local protection racket constantly looking for ways to take a few more dollars out of your pocket.
He said NOT.
I was just being a wise ass drawing a distinction between an alien interloper tyrant vs. a familiar and local one.
BTW, that was written by some Texan. He was telling us all how lucky we were to have high taxes and a big state government. Maybe he can make you rubes in Texas come to your senses. A good start would be to pay $250K for a mural of Jerry Jones.
“Get a rope”
I believe that’s what you call psyops. “Y’all have it so good up there, with your taxes and your enormous bureaucracy! You should stay! No, seriously, you should stay there. Definitely don’t come down here.”
Since Sloopy is back
He is? Who knew?
Uffda. Sorry OMWC. I saw something about Banjos and just assumed that Sloopy was doing the links.
I guess I should have recognized your work. Apologies galore.
I hope someone steals your bicycle.
Revenge….
How many bikes do you and SP need?
Can’t the two of you leave me at least one?

You know who else had the community do things together?
Ferdinand Tönnies?
Dean Pelton?
>It’s just what we call it when the community does things together.
Yeah, like when they cut the buslines serving (low income, very black) north Minneapolis to improve the bus service to (upper middle income, very-not-black) northern suburbs. That’s just us doing things together.
Or when we lock up “patients” in ” mental health hospitals” when their jail term is over, and provide them with no due-process rights. That’s just us doing things together.
Or when the downtown police lock their front doors and ignore a woman begging for help on a Friday night because she’s being stalked by a vagrant, and she later gets attacked in the parking garage on her way to her car. That’s just us doing things together.
Or when we turn 33% of downtown driving lanes into bike lanes ON FUCKING HOTH which never get used, because, again, this is FUCKING HOTH. That’s just us doing things together.
My New Boyfriend Is So Good at Sex It Makes Me Feel Bad

There’s nothing wrong with being hung, but being hanged will put a real crimp in your day.
Have they really advanced that far in penis transplants?
Has anyone told Willie yet? I’m sure he wouldn’t complain.
I knew full well at least one of you would seize on that, but I refuse to butcher a good idiom by correcting its grammar.

Fox News reported that newly unsealed court filings showed that a McCain associate had shared the dossier with the FBI and several media outlets.
The dossier contains numerous allegations, including some salacious claims, about the president’s ties to Russia. Many of the allegations are unverified.
Sunday marked the second straight day Trump went after McCain, who died in August after a lengthy battle with brain cancer.
The president on Saturday quoted former independent counsel Ken Starr, who called it a “very dark stain” against McCain that he had helped spread the dossier.
“He had far worse ‘stains’ than this, including thumbs down on repeal and replace after years of campaigning to repeal and replace!” the president tweeted, referring to the Arizona lawmaker’s vote against the GOP Senate majority during the Republican attempt to repeal ObamaCare in 2017.
I am not seeing the problem here. The fact that McCain died is irrelevant to criticizing his actions. He may have served his country when he was in the military but he was a pos as a politician and he should be called on it. Of course, I am probably horribly biased against mainstream politicians and their media cohorts. But that is not without reason.
“Many of the allegations are unverified”
Like they were made up?
Can’t have all the resisters realize that was the case. Especially since then they might also find out that the people that peddled them to get the FISA court to allow them to spy on a political enemy knew the information was bullshit when they did so, and that that should result in some serious legal problems for everyone that did this shit.
He was pretty much also a POS as a military man. If his daddy hadn’t been an admiral, no way he would have ever made it past ensign.
Hey now, the man was a genuine flying ace (in reverse).
He took out five aircraft.
I’m over “serving your country” as a badge of honor. Obviously a ton of people go into the military for morally laudable reasons, and some of them sacrifice of themselves for their fellow citizens. But a hell of a lot also join up because it’s better than prison, or because it’s a career move, or because they know they’re going to be doing the equivalent of retail inventory audits for four years as a government employee. Shit, Mussolini was a veteran; so was another infamous contemporary who’s name I needn’t mention.

Reader’s View: Anti-Trump column was ‘pure hate’
Most reasonable letter to the editor ever?
Minnesota nice.
“a “Local View” column — by a writer from Wayzata, Minn”
Incredibly salient point, this.
Wayzata is chock full of totes woke suburban women. You could do worse than to listen to them for guidance in what is right.
Oh, I thought the paper was in Kansas and they published a local letter from Minnesota. My bad.
Well Wayzata is a fancy suburb of Minneapolis, so it doesn’t really count as a “local” letter for a newspaper published in Duluth either.
Your point still stands.
Duluth and Wayzata are a long ways apart both physically and culturally.
“A hate of our president.”
If it makes you feel any better, they hate you too.
Rear Admiral Schools Senator in Submarine Capabilities
They are long, hard, full of seamen and travel deep into dark, wet places?
No, that you’re supposed to close both the screen door and the hatch before submerging.
Late producer Debra Hill (Halloween) was trying to get a feature reboot of Sea Hunt going. I worked in her office (for another producer) and ended up designing posters and script covers to help sell it. She wanted it to have some sex appeal, so I designed some with the words DIVE DEEP. GET WET. on it, etc. That was fun. The project never ended up happening, though.
SEA SMITH ONLY TRUE ‘REAR’ ADMIRAL
Why more men than women die by suicide
Men get shit done.
The last engineering experiment.
Access to guns drives suicide rates? This island country begs to differ.
Look, not everyone has a suicide forest or death from overwork as a national passtime.
Women talk about the problem, men fix it.
Reminds me of the old joke:
Why in disaster situations do we let women and children go first?
So we can have some fucking quiet while we figure out what we’re going to do
Why do husbands die before their wives?
Because they want to.
So women don’t really wanna do it
All I am reading is that men are more competent.
firearms account for more than half of suicides.
This wording is strange. That a gun was present is not why someone killed themselves and the gun didn’t do it on its own volition.
It’s a stolen base they use a lot in anti-gun bits. They’re arguing that there are a significant number of people who sort of have a casual leaning towards suicide such that if they find a gun laying around they’ll likely kill themselves, but absent that they’ll hang in there another day and see what happens. It’s asinine.
Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke on Sunday said he doesn’t believe anyone can be “born” to hold political office, days after raising eyebrows for comments he made to Vanity Fair in which he suggested he was destined to run for president.

Jewish voters are furious at Dems’ defense of Ilhan Omar
Uh, better late than never, I guess.
Until it’s time to actually vote, then it’s hold your nose and vote Democrat again.
That’s the sad truth with way too many democrat supporters.
The Democrats can’t afford to alienate that 2% of America that is Muslim. Much better to piss of the backbone of their donor class.
Meh, where are the yids gonna go, huh? To those evul rethuglicans we tell them want to restart Hitler’s work? HAH!
/democrat party strategist
Also, unions – who are they going to vote for, Trump? Ha! like he could take ever the Midwestern rust belt states away from the Democrats.
Yes, but the Dems already out-raise the Reps by a significant enough amount they can afford to lose a few donors, and the voting calculus checks out. The Muslim pop is growing, while the Jewish pop is pretty much stagnant, with the only real growth coming from the sector that already leans Rep (the Orthodox). And in the end it is votes, not dollars, that wins elections.
“while the Jewish pop is pretty much stagnant”
I don’t see how that’s possible. The ones around here, every young couple have like 6-8 kids.
Certain sub-sets are growing like gangbusters, while others are shrinking, leading to overall stagnation. And in fairness, the stagnation may just be as a percentage base (holding steady at 2% of the pop), which would imply steady but not significant growth. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the stats.
“I’m homeless. I don’t think I can vote for Trump, even though he’s great for Israel,” said Jason, a start-up owner from Long Island who asked that his surname not be used. “But as a Jew, I can’t see a way to support the Democratic Party. It’s supporting your own destruction.”
That is, indeed, quite a kosher pickle. I am not saying you need to vote for anyone in particular, but an “Orange Man Bad” standard for reasoning is not going to serve you well in making voting decisions.
I say we recruit them and instruct them in the ways of the glib.

Women in tech: Success still hangs on relationships and privilege
Fuck off. If women want to succeed i tech and have the skillset, they have every advantage in the world right now.
When we had openings for a web dev intern, a UX researcher, and a Content Strategist, I want to say the percentage of female applicants was something like 0%, 85%, 100%, in that order. We’d hire a less experienced female web developer just because unicorns are amazing, but none, and I mean none, have applied for technical positions at my place in the five years I’ve been there. And this is a university position at an environmental science organization, so it’s not like there are a bunch of Type A Mad Men people running around.
Is there any industry where entry to leadership roles isn’t predicated more on networking and relationships?
Al Qaida #3?
Yeah, I’ll just leave this here.
“According to recent diversity reports, women are still underrepresented in most tech companies, especially in technical and leadership roles”
Your framework is all wrong. You are treating these jobs like a government grant that should be divided equally. Rather than an aggregation of market actors picking from sparse resources. Their aren’t a lot of women applying for tech jobs. Not in the same proportion as men.
Gee why would a tech company be short of women employees.

All the bad guy has to do is drive his evil petrol-powered vehicle for 350 miles or so.

Britain’s Top Spy…still needs a license to kill
In the final Bond film, James perishes in a blazing inferno after his e-car bursts into flames following a low-speed rear-end collision. For Britain.
In fairness, the electric sports cars tend to have better acceleration than the ICE sports cars, which could give an advantage in a (necessarily short) high speed chase. Plus the down time while the batteries recharge at a safe house is no problem if Bond is with a lady friend.
You know, come to think of it, I’ve never seen James Bond stop for gas. Although the cars don’t generally last more than a tank, so…

“You’re out of gas, 007.”
“How’d that happen?”
“You drove it too long.”
“You need to send someone to fix it.”
“Just walk to the nearest petrol station, get a can and pour it in the tank. Then you will be able to drive there and fill it up yourself.”
“…”
“You’ve never filled your own fuel tank before, have you?”
“The cars always wrecked before this.”

Good morning Glibs! This weekend I had my sled hockey league championships. It turned out to be a bit of a shit show. We lost our first game 2-0, but it was very close and they only scored in the last few minutes, then an empty net goal. So not a bad start. But then, right as we were gearing up for game 2, the league commissioner informed us that our best player could not play. He plays for both our A and B teams, and one of the other teams contested that he was not officially declared on our B team roster. Turns out he was not, even though he played with us all season and nobody complained or looked into it. So someone pulled a dick move and got him off our team. We ended up finishing 1-3 for the weekend, putting us in last place, and we only scored 3 goals.
Sorry, Kev. That’s a shitty way to lose.
No puck bunnies waiting outside the locker room, huh?
Kev, sorry to hear that. Stupid arguments like that are one of the reasons my fat old man hoops league isn’t really a league. About a dozen of us simply rent a gym every week and play a pickup game with each other. No set teams and we rarely bicker about anything.
I can’t play pickup games at the gym anymore. Even if all the other players are old and slow like me, the constant fighting and bitching are a total buzzkill.
We consider it a good week when there are no injuries and everyone shows up for the post game hydration session afterwards.
Yep. No more organized men’s league for me either. Fighting, bitching cheap shit. Just play, you fucking goobers. There aren’t any scouts in the stands.
In the late ’90s, the T-Wolves would practice in a gym located right below the Target Center. The court was 1 of 2 courts in a health club, so the practices were sort of semi-public.
My favorite day of the year was when the T-woof would start camp for the year and the other gym would be FULL of wannabee delusional people who were sure that someone from the T-woofs would see them lighting up the other players and give them a contract.
I’m not talking about D1 players who weren’t drafted. Those guys had agents and enough self-respect to know the NBA doesn’t work like that. No these where chuckleheads who were maybe something big in high school but are convinced that life screwed them out of a D1 scholarship and a path to the NBA.
Anyhow, the ridiculousness of those pickup games was astonishing.
Our league logo which shows you how dedicated we are to the craft of basketball.
*VBA used to stand for Van Cleve Basketball Assoc. (Van Cleve was the name of the gym we started playing at.) We have moved gyms and now we tell people that VBA stands for Very Bad Athletes.
When I was in men’s league, our team name was LGOP (Looked Good On Paper).
Our new gym is in Logan Park and I threatened one year to change the name to Logan’s Gentlemen’s Basketball Team and get t-shirts with the new initials on it.
The troglodytes I play with were not amused.
In college, for our dorm intramural basketball team name, we wanted something like Heat or Magic that wasn’t an obvious plural, BUT, we wanted it to end in an ‘S’. So we were The Glass. Which has a nice hoops connotation anyway.
My roommate spent the next summer in LA with his girlfriend who went to USC. Apparent GLASS is/was the name of the gay/lesbian association. He was amused by the responses his shirt got.
That is a great logo.
We have competent people in charge on our end. The national tournaments are run by USA hockey and they always do a great job. Having fewer people in charge seems to keep a lot the fighting and bitching to a minimum.
In this case, the team we suspect was behind it have always been assholes. Also, the woman in charge of the league has never done a great job. The rules seem to change every weekend, and she’s had a grudge against the player in question since last year, when he checked her daughter and sent her flying. Picture a 230 pound guy hitting a 100 pound girl. It was a clean, legal, and appropriate hit but her mom wasn’t happy.
There is a local league here that buys up ice time at a ton of local rinks and then organizes pickup games. Players sign up with an app and join games near them when they get a chance. The players have to assign themselves a skill level so the games all have players with a similar skill level.
The lady who runs this is called the Hockey Nazi because she keeps an eagle eye out for people who are trying to play with an incorrect skill level. Some guys will say they are level 4 instead of 3 so they can play with their buddies. She will find out and stop the guy from playing with his buddies.
I met her once about the possibility of helping her turn her web app into a generic app that could be used in other cities. I left the meeting knowing that even if she bit on the project I wouldn’t work on it because she was such a control freak.
*Sledge hockey
Eh it is not winning that counts …
No puck bunnies. Our hotel was nicer this time, but we didn’t see much of it. They gave us the last game Saturday, which started late, and the first game Sunday, so we got about 6 hours of sleep. Hopefully things will go better in Tampa.
The guy that runs our program was out of the country this weekend. This is not the first problem we’ve had with the league this year, so I’m curious to see how he handles it. There is talk of us forming our own league with teams like Nashville and Minnesota. That’s more driving but I’d be ok with that.
Btw, to Nephilium and wdalasio, I sampled the Tullamore for St. Paddys. It was pretty good, very smooth, albeit a little boring.
So I have this narrative in my head about my family history, I have sort of filled in the story based on research and family rumors to something that makes sense. My Great-Great-Grandfather C was the black sheep of the family (it took research to figure out his name, he was even left out of a family bible, even though his son and father are both in it). My theory, based on family gossip and such, was that he married an Indian woman and had my Great-Grandfather. She then died and married a “respectable white woman” and had other kids with her. He then died/left and she raised the kids, including my Great-Grandfather as her own. She is in that family bible, even though a step.
I have always joked about being the result of 7 generations of imbreeding in south central KY. This was a joke about my Mom’s side of the family tree, which has a few too many cases of marrying 2nd cousins and such.
So, that leads to interesting bit of this story, my Sister buying a bunch of ancestry.com test kits for Christmas. My Mom’s results validate my inbreeding joke.
Her results:
76% English
19% Irish/Scottish
5% assorted Nordic
That is it. Nothing from the continent (I know, technically Norway/Sweden/Finland are on the continent, but I figured that can be explained by random viking raids of the islands). Her family got to KY/TN in the late 1700s and they carefully selected who they bred with.
My Dad’s family is similar, but a little more open, so my results are slightly different:
75% English
9% Irish/Scottish (since my last name is Irish, I expected more here)
8% Nordic
4% German
3% French
and the kicker, 1% central Africa – Congo/Cameroon.
So I think I need to revise my story I started with. I don’t think she was Indian. To make the percentage work, she would have to be 1/4 or 1/8 black. My guess someone took a trip to the slave cottage about 1800-1820.
This leads to three questions:
1. Just how crap is ancestry.com — I don’t know how much I trust it on this stuff anyway.
2. Question for HM — is that enough to get me in the Mulatto club?
3. Where are my reparations?!?
Note: I am the whitest of white boys, if this is true, melanin is not one of the things I inherited.
Their data is not that reliable.
I figured as such, but it is “consistent” as a 2nd cousin on the C side of the family has the same 1% in his breakdown.
Especially the native American data.
Do you get your haplogroups with that?
Not with AncestryDNA. I think you can with 23 and Me or Family Tree DNA.
I got them with 23andme. Was curious about Ancestry
There isn’t enough data yet to make the tiny potions meaningful. Initially, I was as Russian as you are African. That dropped out completely. My breakdown has changed aver the past couple years as more people join the party.
I know they have almost no ability to report on Native American percentages, so that was kind of what I thought. Does it change automatically as they get more info?
Yes, you will be notified when there are updates. Interestingly, mine tracks way better now with known family history.
Mine tracks pretty well, that one spot was a weird gap – and indian or black both fit the narrative. Plus, my Mom found years back a birth record of a baby given up for adoption (by either her grandmother or her great-aunt) and the grandson of that adopted baby shows up properly on ancestry.com.
Knowing historical migration patterns helps. I’m 1/3 English yet no one in my family tree is English. So my guess is the English comes from a combination of my German Anglo Saxon and Irish relatives.
The last update changed my categories around a good bit. One oddity is that the Italian side is now categorized as French. I know for a fact my grandfather’s family is Italian – from their names to the language they spoke to where they came to the US from. I have a copy of my great-grandfather’s Italian birth certificate. Still, I went from 36% Italian and no French (for which I have no known ancestors) to no Italian and 11% French. The only thing I can think of is that, if you look at the region that gets shaded for France, there’s a chunk of northern Italy included which is the part of Italy my family came from (Parma).
Originally mine was 36% Italian, 25% English, 20% Irish, and small bits of Scandavian and Western Europe. Now it says 55% Irish/Scottish, 29% England/Wales/Northwestern Europe, 11% France, 2% European Jewish (I’m in the tribe now!), 2% Germanic Europe, 1% Norwegian.
Chip, here’s a fun fact about Italy – there is a sizable difference in the genetics of northern italians and southern italians. It is more probable than the Parmans have more blood ties to southern france than the Sicilians or other southern italians.
Oh, no doubt. I’ve heard many times how my great-grandfather hated Sicilians and Calabrians, and while I’ve never heard my grandfather say anything like that, I do know that he would get really angry when Mafia movies were said to be about Italians – “They aren’t movies about Italians, they’re movies about Sicilian criminals!” It was a minor family scandal when my dad’s cousin married an off-the-boat Sicilian in the ’60s.
I will see the data I have seen does validate my claim that I am a descendant of colonists, not of immigrants. I am sure one exists somewhere, but I have never been able to find an immigrant in my family tree. Every branch traces back to pre-1776 in the colonies.
“and the kicker, 1% central Africa – Congo/Cameroon.”
That’s what happens when they go back over 70,000 years, we all end up with that one. Does that mean we don’t have to pay those reparations?
You get a 1% rebate.

Their aren’t a lot of women applying for tech jobs. Not in the same proportion as men.
That would be an interesting line of inquiry, if you could get the info. Job offers as a per cent of applications, maybe. Or even average time actively looking for a job.
I suspect it would show women (real women, qualified for the jobs) as having a much shorter job search than men.
Wasn’t there a story a little while ago about Google using an HR AI to weed out candidates rejecting 90% of female applicants, even though gender was not factored in to its formulas, so they tweaked the AI to give preferential treatment to women?
It was Amazon.
Blast, you beat me.
NM, it was Amazon.
That sounds pretty gender neutral to me. A gender neutral evaluation does not guarantee the outputs will reflect complete gender equality as, brace yourselves tech conglomerates, there are differences between the genders.

Man Falsely Accused Of Sexual Assault Awarded $1.8 Million In Damages
His ex-wife and the system put him through the ringer – now they all have to pay up.
I doubt he’ll ever get a cent of it, but it’s the principle. Glad to see him get the justice that’s due (though then again the justice that’s due would be the ex-wife and the nurse going to prison).
You have to wonder if the devastation he suffered will somehow magically go away because he got some money in the end. Depending on how long it took for him to get redress, it might just not even be of any value.
“Vladek Filler was accused 12 years ago of repeatedly sexually assaulting his wife, Ligia, as the couple was divorcing and bitterly fighting for custody of their children. When Vladek told Ligia he would take their two sons with him and move to Georgia to be near his mother, she began making accusations against him.”
That’s not at all suspicious.

When in doubt, blame Trump
After Trump’s latest threat, I reached out to several experts in democracy and authoritarianism to ask what they made of it. Their answers were consistent: No, the United States does not appear at risk of widespread political violence anytime soon. But Trump’s words are still corroding democracy and public safety.
His latest incitement fit a historical pattern, and one with “scary echoes,” as Daniel Ziblatt, who co-wrote the recent book “How Democracies Die,” told me. Trump combined lies about his political opponents — Democrats who need to be investigated (for made-up scandals) — with allusions to a patriotic, violent response by ordinary citizens. Latin American autocrats, including Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, have used this combination. So did European fascists in the 1930s.
The United States, thank goodness, does not have armed citizen militias carrying out regular attacks, as those other countries did. But our situation is still worrisome. “Violent talk can, at minimum, encourage lone-wolf violence,” Steven Levitsky, Ziblatt’s co-author and a Harvard political scientist, said. “It can also slowly normalize political violence, turning discourse and ideas that were once unsayable and even unthinkable into things that are sayable and thinkable.”
These risks are not just hypothetical. In 2017, a House candidate body-slammed a reporter who asked a probing question — behavior with no recent precedent. Trump praised the now-congressman, Greg Gianforte, for the assault. In the Bright Light Watch survey of political scientists late last year, only 49 percent said the United States did not tolerate political violence, a notable decline from earlier levels. Some respondents cited Gianforte.
Maybe Trump didn’t shoot those people in New Zealand. But it never would have happened if Hillary Clinton were President.
Prove me wrong.
it never would have happened if Hillary Clinton were President. – because of the nuclear holocaust?
Made up scandals. Uh huh.
Fireman Sam is putting women off joining the fire service because “most of the job is nothing like it is portrayed”, a female chief has said.
Senior fire officer Alex Johnson believes the CGI firefighting idol and images of men rushing into burning buildings does little to encourage gender equality.
“Children’s shows like Fireman Sam don’t help to break down stereotypes either. Most of the job is nothing like it is portrayed. We do community and youth engagement work, where we need to be seen to be representative of the population.
” Women and people from different ethnic backgrounds are simply not considering being a firefighter because they are not seeing themselves represented.”
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/03/17/fireman-sam-putting-women-joining-fire-service-job-nothing-like/
or the fact they can’t handle a large gushing hose?
I know many of women who can handle one masterfully.
We do community and youth engagement work, where we need to be seen to be representative of the population.
Maybe you should try putting out fires instead.
You mistake their intent for caring about whether the job is done right rather than stealing whatever respect or prestige the position has earned through the efforts of men.
I prefer Telegram Sam
He’s my main man!
Fireman Sam had arguably the most annoying children’s show character this side of Calliou, Norman Price. That screeching voice….
If they’d just let Norman die, they could sit around and get fat.
Wait, it’s been a while, but weren’t there multiple important female characters?
Or am I thinking of Bob the Builder? Those shows kind of run together.
Fireman Sam had one. Bob the Builder had more than one, but only one was a human, I think – the others were talking pieces of equipment with female names and voices.
I think. My kids last watched those shows 5 or so years ago.
Look, it doesn’t matter how many burly men you show as nurses or strong wymyn you show kicking in doors and arresting hulking drug lords who outweigh them by 200 pounds, those jobs are going to trend female and male respectively. They require traits that tend to align closely with sexual differences and thus they tend to appeal to one or the other sex.
Gee, I wonder who’s filling their heads with this nonsense that they need to “see themselves represented”.
I wonder who taught them that when they see another human, they need to treat it like an alien that is unlike them, instead of a fellow human that is generally the same.
My sister in-law is a Firefighter, she has been for over 10 years, 5 of those years she’s been riding a desk because of how jacked up her back is. Anyone want to guess how she got so injured?
Are 19 year old women watching Fireman Sam? Or are they accepting six year old applicants?
…where we need to be seen to be representative of the population.
I could see why you would want this for your police force, but for your firefighters this is in no way relevant. Do you have the strength to carry a person and man a hose, and the willingness to run into a burning building if need be? That’s it, let the chips fall where they may.
Statistics on hate crimes are notoriously unreliable, but the evidence strongly suggests that they’re rising. The F.B.I.’s data shows an increase. The Anti-Defamation League reports a 73 percent rise in “extremist-related killings” during the last four years.
Not all attacks come from people who identify with the political right, obviously: The 2017 attempted mass murder of House Republicans on a baseball field is one horrific example. But most politically motivated attacks do indeed come from the right. Last year, 39 of the 50 extremist killings tracked by the A.D.L. were committed by white supremacists, and another eight were committed by killers espousing anti-government views.
The best thing about “unreliable” statistics? You can manipulate them to fit your narrative.
“These statistics are unreliable, but if they weren’t they would confirm exactly what we already believe to be true”
This is why nobody should believe media reports which cite statistics to support political assertions. The data is almost without fail entirely unreliable, often by design. At least in this case they were up front about its unreliability.
Hell I’ve done consulting for orgs to help them gather data where it was obvious they wanted a predetermined result, data quality be damned.
They’d keep running everything past internal reviewers who’d request tweaks to the questions to nudge people towards the answers they wanted after the test runs didn’t give the sought after results. They dismissed my warnings about how their suggested changes would bias the data, then when I requested insights on why they insisted on doing it that way they took me off the project and had someone else do it that way who wouldn’t ask questions.
I’m thinking about dropping them as a client. It strains my ethics to work with people who insist on bad science legitimized by saying quality researchers contributed.
Whenever I see the phrase “on the rise” I quit reading.
“Hot air baloons on the rise.”
Again with the assumption that white supremacy is right wing.
Seriously, talk about a stolen base.

Most distressing was discovering that one branch of the family fought in a loyalist militia in South Carolina during the revolution.
Most distressing was discovering that one branch of the family fought in a loyalist militia in South Carolina during the revolution.
My mother did some genealogy research for her family to find ancestors who were around at the time of the American Revolution (since family lore said there were), and the first one she found happened to be an immigrant from Hesse. Which was rather suspicious.
There’s no shame in being a mercenary.
LOL, on my father’s side there was serious hillbilly action. Murders, snake handling, booze running, and definitely some race mixing and name changing to avoid state sponsored discrimination.
Even made the “families to watch out for” list by Walter Plecker.

For the record, this is what white supremacy in action looks like.
Mostly just petty criminals and unremarkable layabouts in my line. Nothing even exciting like moonshining or bucking the authorities. More like this.

not only racist but sexist!
Damn it accidentally hit post.
The family line traces back to the same region in Bohemia. My 5th great grandfather actually shares the same name as Jan. Problem I’m running into is Jan had one son who took on the surname Bohem rather than Žižka. My assumption was Jan was so loved that many people just took on his surname to honor him.
Attempted robbery at Bellagio casino in Las Vegas turns into shoot-out with police
We usually have a couple 2 or 3 of these a year, but they rarely ever make the national news. No sense scaring the punters…
You’ve got to be a special kind of stupid to try to rob the casino cage.
You’d be surprised how often its successful. They generally don’t want shit like this happening in the middle of a sea of tourists, so the usual procedure is to give it up smooth and let the cops try to find the perps afterwards.
Back in the early 90’s, the LA gangs had a couple of very successful heists in Las Vegas. Then they suddenly decided to stop robbing casinos. I assume the bodies are in the Pacific or buried deep in the desert.
Meh, they likely just finished watching one of those idiotic Ocean’s movies and while hitting the bong and munching on pizza decided they could totally do the same shit themselves and never had enough time to recover from their high and realize how stupid they were being. Live and learn.
You know what the stupidest part of that story is? An 85 word article written in 8 paragraphs. WTF?
This weekend I was at a McDonald’s that had CNN on the TV. The banner at the bottom had these two items (paraphrasing):
“Trump denies rise of white nationalism”
“New Zealand shooter used same rhetoric against immigration as Trump”
CNN really is the worst.
Lately CNN and MSNBC have been running with the FoxNews and Trump are coordinating with each other angle.
As if during the Obama years, MSNBC and CNN weren’t firmly parked up Obama’s butthole.
Chris Matthews literally said on the air “we are the Obama network.”
I try to not give any business to any establishments that put TV news on.
When I’m at my favorite watering hole, I’ll ask the bartender to change the channel if the television is turned to a news station. Bobsledding is a lot more interesting to watch.
NPR has consistently been referring to the shooter as a white supremacists only. No other traits. In fact, when blaming Trump for the shooting, they went so far as to call Trump’s claim that shooterboy was an eco-fascist “not true.”
We don’t know anything about what he actually “was”. Dozens of pages of copypasta shitposts prove nothing.
“Buttplug teaches us science.”

Poll: Half of Americans say Trump is victim of a ‘witch hunt’ as trust in Mueller erodes
Amid signs that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference may be near its conclusion, a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll finds that trust in Mueller has eroded and half of Americans now agree with President Trump’s contention that he has been the victim of a “witch hunt.”
Maybe the arrest and prosecution of some of Trump’s lackeys, but still nothing about their involvement in “Russian Meddling”, which is the supposed point of the investigation, may just – crazy talk! – have something to do with that.
Circling the wagon for real this time…
When this trope dies, things will get ugly for the people that peddled it and knew it was bullshit. I suspect most of them were people that had skin in the game and needed the distraction, but a lot of people went along with this shit for the #resist value and now have egg on their face.
I predict AOC will be considered too moderate in ~5 weeks
On the contrary, they showed politically diverse editor teams on Wikipedia put out better entries—articles with higher accuracy or completeness—than uniformly liberal or conservative or moderate teams. It’s a surprising result and so I caught up with Evans and Teplitskiy to offer their interpretations.
Only if you’re a fucking retarded partisan shill.

The Green New Deal Isn’t Global Enough
“The resources Democrats want Washington to appropriate and use domestically instead need to flow elsewhere in the world.”
Destroying the United States economy isn’t enough!
Indian activist wants redistribution of first world money to third world, film at eleven.
The Indians could have been a major economic power by now but they signed on early with the commies and will be paying for that for a very long time.
You want more nationalism? This is how you get more nationalism.
and this little gem:
“Yes, people in France and elsewhere will have to pay more for their petrol.”
Isn’t this how they got people rioting in the streets to start with?
This is exactly what the Paris accord is about. That thing that every Dem is going to promise to “sign on day 1”.
Apparently cities are ditching their recycling programs and dumping it in landfills instead.
I’ve always hated recycling because its a scheme where I pay a company to make money off my own labor. If a recycling company paid me to recycle, thus compensating me for the raw materials I’m providing them, I’d be more inclined to do it, but the fact that its an enactment of labor on my part for which I must pay for the privilege of conducting so a third party can make a profit, combined with the fact that even then its less economical than creating a brand new product with the exception of aluminum products, always put me off.
This fad was doomed from the start, because it was not financially viable and done only because of legal pressure. Sooner than later, people would realize the costs made it impossible to keep doing and started doing this shit. of course the fucks that forced it on everyone want to make sure the facts don’t end up in the public domain until after they are long gone so they can avoid the “I told you so” snark they deserve.
And here we have the real reason behind recycling. I wonder how many readers will be able to read between the lines of the flowery, heavily-biased prose and ask themselves WTF am I doing this for?
If they pay you to take it, its recycling.
If you pay them to take it, its trash removal.
(I believe I stole that from Mike Munger)
There’s lots of recycling going on. Ask any 2007 meth head breaking into foreclosed houses and pulling out the copper pipes.
I wouldn’t do it but it is incredibly easy on our end where we live. We have 2 big bins, one for trash and one for recycling.
We do too. Only thing is when the company that picks up the garbage comes around, they dump both into the same container on the truck…
Penn and Teller had a Bullshit! episode on recycling. IIRC the only recyclable that made money was the aluminum; all the others cost money. Also, all the country’s trash for something like 100 years would fit in a 3-mile square landfill – they show it as a dot on a map.
I get “free” recycling – a separate bin from the trash bin. I put easy recyclables in it (bottles, cans, cardboard, etc.) and figure it leaves more room in the trash bin.
NYT editorial board is risk averse
Never saw that coming, did you?
The United States increasingly stands apart from European nations in its approach to regulation. Europe is willing to constrain potentially harmful corporate behavior on a precautionary basis, while the United States requires stronger evidence of danger.
——–
The 1992 Maastricht Treaty, which started the project of creating a single set of European regulations, enshrined a “precautionary principle,” meaning that government can impose restrictions even when there is not clear evidence of harm. “Those in public office have a duty not to wait until their worst fears are realized,” Robert Coleman, then the European Commission’s director general for health and consumer protection, said in 2002.
The United States, meanwhile, has moved in the other direction. “As European policymakers have grown more willing to regulate risks on precautionary grounds, increasingly skeptical American policymakers have called for higher levels of scientific certainty before imposing additional regulatory controls on business,” David Vogel, a political scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, wrote in a 2012 book on the divide, “The Politics of Precaution.”
European nations initially lagged behind the United States in protecting the health and safety of their citizens, which created a popular backlash that gained strength after a series of disasters, including the meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in 1986. The political environment also has been more supportive in Europe. Right-wing parties in Europe generally are neither as skeptical of science nor as devoted to business as the Republican Party in the United States can be.
America’s finest minds, ladies and gentlemen.
Yes… certainly… a catastrophe created solely by government and government alone is completely a failure of regulation.
If only the Soviet Union had some type of central government with sufficient authority to protect the consumer…
Oh boy.
something something lemonade stand
Europe is willing to constrain potentially harmful corporate behavior on a precautionary basis, while the United States requires stronger evidence of danger.
And the EU GDP is $2T less than the US GDP, despite the EU having 200M more people. It’s almost like one system may be more efficient than the other.
But they have free healthcare and everyone there is happy all of the time.

BUT IT GOOD FOR KEEPING RESISTANCE LOW OTHER DAYS OF YEAR.
Precautionary regulation imposes real economic costs. In some cases, the more permissive stance of the United States may well be justified. The case of the Boeing 737 Max 8, however, should not have been a close call. Though the risk of another crash was unknown, the F.A.A. should have recognized that the potential for another loss of human life was an unbearable expense.
Just think how awesome the world would be now, if the NYT editorial board had been running things when McCormick invented the Reaper.
“Some poor farmer might get his arm ripped off by that thing! Ban it!”
If we would only listen to Gulag Barbie, we wouldn’t have any dangerous planes flying around.

Oh oh….
Clay had a short residency at Vinyl at Hard Rock in Las Vegas several years back. I was so tempted to go.
WOLF! No, seriously, this time it’s really here.
Last Thursday night I happened to be on Twitter when news of the New Zealand massacre hit. Not realizing the magnitude of the horror, I clicked on a link to a video of the shooter’s livestream. When I realized what I was seeing, I quickly clicked away, but I’m afraid I won’t ever be able to forget what I saw before I did. But the one thing I knew from the moment I saw the guns and heard the words, “Let’s get this party started” was that this was a white supremacist terrorist. That macho, pseudo-warrior, “white power” swagger is all too familiar these days.
———–
More importantly, Trump refused to acknowledge that in recent years, an international white identity movement has grown all over the world, including in the United States. In Europe, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia are the major motivating factor. American white supremacists take it to a whole other level, which is not unexpected considering our history of slavery and Jim Crow oppression. They are generally hostile to Muslims and Jews as well, of course, but they have equal antipathy toward African-Americans and Latinos. The American race war has a lot of diversity.
———–
There can be no doubt that there is a growing international white identity movement. And we can no longer ignore the fact that by failing even to admit that such a movement exists, the president of the United States is empowering and enabling it. In using the rhetoric of hate, he has aligned himself with it.
At this point, all I hear is dogs barking. One starts, then another, and pretty soon all the dogs in the neighborhood are going crazy.
You know maybe there is an increase of white supremacy… and just maybe there is a reason for it. A lot of dumb ideas don’t necessarily spring out of nowhere.
How long can you say white men are pieces of shit before some start saying fuck you back.
That’s my take. You can’t demonize people for their skin pigment and then be surprised when that is how some people start organizing themselves.
But the one thing I knew from the moment I saw the guns and heard the words, “Let’s get this party started” was that this was a white supremacist terrorist.
Well, duh. You’d have seen the guns and heard “allahu ackbar!” if it was like 99% of the rest of the terrorism videos on the internet, and you’d be on Twitter decrying Islamophobia before you even had time to ice the friction burns on your cock.
“But the one thing I knew from the moment I saw the guns and heard the words, “Let’s get this party started” was that this was a white supremacist terrorist.”
Otherwise, they would have yelled Allah Akbar or something like that, right? Then it would be like, whoa, that could have been a white dude, nothing to see here, move along…
Odds that this person thinks calling the words of Ilhan Omar anti-semitic is “islamophobic”?
How would the author describe #BLM?
Racism is stupid. All racism is always stupid, all the time, no exceptions. It’s a flaw in the logic even before it becomes a moral failing. I have very little patience for it. I have even less patience for people who either excuse racism against white people or redefine racism against white people to make it not just socially acceptable but almost a moral obligation.
You know maybe there is an increase of white supremacy… and just maybe there is a reason for it.
Only a Nazi would resent the sort of gentle constructive criticism and helpful pointers offered up by his magnanimous betters like Sugarfree’s role model, Heather Digby Parton.

Hey, remember when J.K. Rowling made a ton of money writing YA lit about a genetically-superior race of humans controlling the mass of humanity through magic?
Looks like more guns are from Indiana are exporting themselves to Europe. Trump to blame.
More white supremacists on the loose
That dude is so white he practically glows at night.
The Dutch are claiming it was terrorism related, so the guy HAS to be a white supremacist…
It was revenge against the white terrorists who were inspired by Trump. So, Trump’s fault.
Trump is so powerful he can arm a Turk in Holland and make him shoot up a train in the name of WHITE SUPREMACY! AND HE DOESN’T EVEN SPEAK THE LANGUAGE!!

“Hoyer has called for a lawmaker pay raise in the past to keep up with the cost of living, arguing that it would help ensure that people who aren’t wealthy can serve in Congress.”
Well, that’s why you go to Congress, Steny, to get wealthy. Can we see those tax returns?
Every time Steny Hoyer makes the news I feel like apologizing to everyone not from Maryland.
wAItammminnit – I thought Democrats were brave heroes who worked at food pantries and slept in rented lofts above the homeless shelter.
Hoyer has been in Congress since at least the 18th century. Which proves once and for all that Maryland is full of idiots.

Well of course, they’re in office and obstructing progress!

I have a very hard time believing that a 6-figure income being too low is what’s keeping “regular” people from running for congress. But I’m sure it has nothing to do with the enormous barriers to entry that favor incumbents (aka campaign finance laws).
