What is Smollett’s end-game?
They believe that victim-hood is the ultimate status.
I dunno, making 3/4’s of the public hate you seems like poor strategy when you don’t really have “Fuck You” money. Maybe his backers have deep pockets and after this has died down he’ll be off to the flesh-pots of Thailand?
Entertainment is so fragmented into niches anymore that you can piss off 95% of the public and still spend the rest of your life a multi-millionaire. Particularly when the demo you’re targeting is the one with all of the money and influence.
Babs Streisand comes to mind.
Jane Fonda did alright, too.

He sure as hell will be able to write one of those after this shit show.
The guy who wrote that, Toby Young, knows something about being an unemployable pariah… thanks in large part to anecdotes he tells in that book. Because the UK is run by socialist ninnies.
It’s pretty much been memory holed already. He’s as forgiven as he could ask to be.
Yeah, the one thing that will bite him is that liberal chicago machine is all about the money, which means if he doesn’t pay up, they will show him who is boss…
He was hoping to raise his profile and get better paying parts as a result of improved name recognition and virtue signalling by hollywood.

Since he is gay, I assumed that it was “Hide the salami”
Smollett’s attorneys did not immediately comment.
Really? She has been quite loquacious until now.
I think she had someone reach out to her and mention how she was starting to walk into an ethical minefield. the IL ARDC will suspend people if they get too far out over their skis.

Brexiteers have pledged to ‘go nuclear’ after Theresa May today wrote to the EU asking for permission to delay Brexit until June 30.
Has the EU commanded facebook and the rest of the internet platforms to remove this vile, terrifying hate speech? Will New Zealand fine them?
I hope the chain saw thief was headed to England to solve the Brexit problem. There’s a reason that politics shouldn’t be left to politicians. My teenaged daughter had better decisions making skills when she was 14.
The EU should be bombed into nothingness just for the new law for speed limiting cars.
Was that really the straw that broke the camel’s back for you? Cause I said the same the day they presented that bullshit laundry list of monopolistic asshattery they created and called their constitution.
No – just part of the long laundry list of EU stupidity.

I know I’m a sentimental slob, especially when it comes to my anglophile side. But to see a country – one that stood up to Hitler, Napoleon, held the seas, etc; and Dunkirk, Battle of Rorke’s Drift, St Nazaire Raid, D-Day, Waterloo, Trafalgar, etc – become this disturbs me.

One looks at Europe and wonders if they have bled all the bold blood away.
The people sure as hell might not like what is going on, but the leadership, which coincidentally has managed to remain immune from all the evils & ills they have inflicted on the disarmed sheeple, have seemingly adopted France’s military strategy of surrendering and bearing your belly to the enemy in the hopes they decide not to tear you a new ass.
Yeah, they’s daid.
They couldn’t even make that movie today, much less pull off that feat of arms.

The whole Brexit thing is so convoluted and confusing to me, I stay away from reading about any of it. I mean, I’m aware there was a vote for it, and now everyone is just fucking around with bullshit. But man, I can’t follow any of the story.

The elites hate the decision of the plebes, that should just have kept bending over and grabbing their ankles as the elites wanted them to, and have been grateful for that opportunity.
As far as I can tell, May is trying to split the baby in half and leave the diaper end with the UK.
I am pretty certain she doesn’t want it to work.
Well it’s simple.
The British People want to leave the EU.
The British Parliment doesn’t, but is pretending to keep the promise to follow the results of the referendum.
Never-Brexit and Democrats. Potato/potato.
It should be explicitly noted that the only reason the referendum was allowed was because it was expected to fail. Cameron wanted the leave votes, but didn’t want to leave. His plan was to promise a vote and then when it failed he could move on as if nothing happened.
As it turns out, the incorrect polling numbers we’ve seen recently was the only reason British might be able to escape
You know who else only acceded to an election because they were certain they’d win…?
Hillary?
Dear Leader Kim Jong Un?
Nigel Farage will have to return.
Picture what would happen in the US if the citizens voted to repeal Obamacare.
Sage advice from the peanut gallery
Although the public voted for Brexit in the abstract, all specific versions of it find little support. That’s because they all would, to varying degrees, reduce growth, harm businesses, diminish Britain’s standing in the world, and quite possibly impinge on its sovereignty by binding it to EU rules it will no longer have a say over. As ever in this misadventure, the choices are between bad and worse.
Even so, what should happen now isn’t in doubt: The government should seek a long extension of the Article 50 process that underpins Brexit, and plan for a second referendum — with Remain as an option on the ballot, alongside whatever deal May or her successor manages to devise. Britain’s citizens deserve a chance to decide whether the Brexit on offer bears any resemblance to what they thought they were voting for in 2016, and should be given the opportunity to think again.
Granted, further delay and indecision will be costly.
Bloomberg’s Wise Men of the editorial board say the people didn’t really mean it, when they voted to leave. It was Parliament’s duty to hamstring any attempt to carry out Brexit, in order to give the rubes time to come to their senses. Now that they have frittered away the time allotted, they should throw up their hands and call for a do-over. What’s a few more years, and a few billion more pounds, when a great experiment in supranational government is at stake?
“Bloomberg’s Wise Men of the editorial board say the people didn’t really mean it, when they voted to leave.”
Where have I heard this before? Oh yeah, when the proggies tell us “these people voted against their own interests because they are not smart enough to see that the proggie way is the only way”….
plan for a second referendum — with Remain as an option on the ballot, alongside whatever deal May or her successor manages to devise
So the new plan is to have a second referendum with 2 or 3 Exit options and a Remain option. Why do I suspect that when Remain gets 40% of the vote, and the other three options get around 20% each, they will declare Remain the winner?
Fine, if they want a second referendum, hold one about how to leave. Let the people chose between no-deal, May’s deal, and maybe a Labor deal option, since the Parliament is unwilling to make the decision. But holding a do-over when the results of the first referendum weren’t in anyway honored just makes a mockery of the referendum process and democracy in general.
So what have you shoplifted in your life? I’ll go first. A bottle of wine by mistake.
Sex lingerie for myself. /not really
*sexy – that 4 hours of sleep ain’t helping
Not really a shoplift but I got a mixed up order at Mc Donald’s once and drove away. I was eating a chicken sandwich and thought “What the hell is this?” I ordered a Big Mac. It was in OK on the interstate so I kept on driving. Made up for the chocolate shake I forgot in Tomah, WI and drove away.

I’ve accidentally left stuff in the bottom of my cart and forgot to put it up on the conveyor belt more than once.
No shoplifting, but my Marine “coworkers” and I stole a hummer from the Army in Kuwait.
Did you end up selling it or dumping it?
Dumped it before getting back on the boats.

Nope. There weren’t any females out there.

If they were pleasant on the eyes, I tried a lot, but only got it to work once… I could have made my approach less direct, but that felt like extra work.
I could tell some stories about the summer I worked as an inspector for Orkin. Lots of bored housewives and recent divorcees on my residential inspections. I got laid on the job more than James Effin’ Bond.
Oh, nothing puts out more than bored housewives at home…
Twenty year-old Festus has some stories to tell about bored house wives. I worked as a maintenance/groundskeeper at a strata estate and used to wear shorty shorts (which were the style at the time). I rode my racing bike downhill for ten miles to get there and the same distance to get home. “Pool Boy” would have been a better description of my job. Stoned all the time and all the quim a feller could ask for and some he didn’t want or need. Don’t even ask about waiting tables at the Country Club. Those bitches be grabby!
You’re Danny Noonan?

I should say I also had to go to the store and apologize when my mom found them. I’m sure the adults worked out a deal, but my parents made out like I was at the mercy of the manager whether to press charges. I ended up on a payment plan to pay for them with money I earned doing extra chores since they were out of the box and couldn’t be returned. I was also grounded for a significant portion of time. Being summer, it was not fun…
My sister stole a stainless steel teapot from a Chinese restaurant because she liked the look of it. She had it stuffed precariously in her coat and the lid came off as she walked out the door. So now she owns a lidless teapot and the shame of that incident.
The most flagrant shoplifting I’ve seen that wasn’t some dude booking it out the door with two cases of beer involved a couple who bagged all their groceries as they pulled them off the shelves, then strolled out the store like they’d paid. They left the cart in the entrance as soon as a security guard approached them. Utterly shameless.
I’ve never shoplifted, but I did abscond with just loads of booze, a glass at a time over the course of many months, because our bartenders at one place liked my brother and me.
I believe that’s called “breakage”.
Uhh, I was a very different person when I was young. Got myself straightened out by the time I was 15 or so, but before then…
Long ago my wife worked as a cashier at M. Wards. Couple checking out, credit cards didn’t work. My wife took the merchandise off the counter,, went to the next customer. Turned around and the merchandise was missing, she saw the people out at their car. She locked her register, called for a supervisor, ran out the door and stood behind the car until the would be thieves gave her the merchandise back. She made Employee of the Month.
I forgot to mention she was 5′ tall and weighed a 100 lbs. She is a tough lady.
Some people are raised right.
Amen.
We were at the Apple store when a couple kids ran in, grabbed some stuff and ran out. No one did shit. Our salesguy just shook his head and said that company policy was just to let it go. They don’t grab the guys, call security, or anything.

Either they think their audience is so stupid or bought & paid for, that they will ignore reality in favor of the narrative, or they simply themselves live in la-la-land, and could care less about how fucking stupid they are since in their echo chamber they never get push-back. The fact that they want to label everything that challenges their lies as hate crime and shut it down, should make it obvious why they think they can get away with it too.
The media know their audience. I love my mom, but geez, she is one of those baby boomers with this strange faith in authority. She watched and believed the nightly network news and never challenged it, never looked for alternative perspectives, just like she does whatever her doctors tell her, her attorneys, etc.
My default position is everything is bullshit until confirmed. Hers and those like her is just the opposite.
You can also add something I have heard friends say, that Trump re Charlottesville said “Nazis are good people”.
I guaranfuckingtee that girl didn’t come up with that n her own.
Pretty sick. To hell with these people.
And what a responsible adult’s reply should be, is something like: “Oh sweetheart. The President likes you. He just has different ideas about how many people should be able to come to American than we do.”
But nope. Let’s use her to “prove” the President is a Nazi for the gazillionth time.
This song entertains me just for the unintended hilarity contained within (as it came out in 1998).
Beto O’Rourke Is Fauxbama
“Let us be clear: we will not be defined by our fears or the smallness of our differences; we will instead be known by our ambitions, our aspirations and the resolve, the creativity, the service and sacrifice by which we will have achieved them,” O’Rourke says on Twitter, delivering the kind of pre-chewed pablum Obama could have delivered, and probably did. It’s possible to get excited about this kind of thing, but it takes some doing.
“Whatever our differences — where you live, who you love, to whom you pray, for whom you voted in the last election, let those differences not define us or divide us at this moment,” O’Rourke said at his El Paso campaign kickoff. “Let’s agree going forward, before we are anything else, we are Americans first.” As if anyone was saying we were Hungarians first…
These platitudes aren’t as sonorous in O’Rourke’s mouth, though. His voice lacks the timbre of Obama’s cigarette-cured tones. He doesn’t have Obama’s posture. He rushes instead of orates. He seems less like a world-historical figure in waiting than a cute neophyte. Obama was, moreover, exceedingly careful. He avoided saying anything crazy like suggesting we tear down existing border fencing in Texas or contemplate reparations for slavery. O’Rourke seems to toss out jawdroppers on the fly. He is trying not to displease any Democratic voting bloc by committing to anything much, but he has already said lots of things that can be used to paint him as an extremist in the general election. Obama was more disciplined, more aware of the nuances of political blather.
To Beta: Walk the talk or STFU.
It is definitely an example from Obama’s playbook.

All the other bums were taking their free dumps.
When she started talking about naming the guys family I would have threatened to beat her ass.
That’s beyond the pale. These people want the safety of the mob on their side. They have to bear personal responsibility for their actions or it won’t stop.
Yeah, fuck her. I can also see why her employer fired her as a security risk for publicly going psycho and doxing and threatening a stranger. You don’t want that sort of person working for you for liability reasons. Speech is one thing, but she was trying to raise an internet mob.
Someone linked her photo in a past thread from a different story. Think overweight 45 year-old housewife with a towering mohawk and just the sort of attitude you’d expect.
A woman confronted and later doxxed an old man quietly drinking coffee in a Palo Alto Starbucks simply because he was wearing a MAGA hat, which resulted in her losing her job.
He was clearly fueling up to go on a hate-filled MAGA rampage.

It’s so obvious I am in no way obligated to explain it
President Donald Trump is now planning to nominate not one, but two obviously unqualified people for seats on the Federal Reserve Board. First it was conservative pundit Stephen Moore; now he’s adding former pizza-company executive Herman Cain. Few if any economists – even Republican economists – will support these choices. It’s just an awful idea, and pretty much everyone who follows the Fed knows it.
Back when Cain’s name was first floated for the position, I wrote about what this kind of selection says of Trump and his understanding of his job, so I’ll cut that part short this time.
Are those guys Ivy League academics? Where are their credentials?
The last thing in the world we would want on the Federal Reserve Board is a conservative black man with real world business experience. Who knows what he might vote for? He probably doesn’t even believe in Modern Monetary Theory.
From all-knowing Wiki:
Cain was chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Omaha Branch from 1989 to 1991.[10] He was deputy chairman, from 1992 to 1994, and chairman, from 1995 to 1996, of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.[10]
Completely lacking in qualifications. He obviously has no idea what the Federal Reserve even is or does. He probably thinks he can open a savings account and get a free toaster.
I had lunch one time with Steven Moore one time in late 2015. He told me to wait and see when I called Trump a flash in the pan candidate. Turns out he was right. I walked away from that meal with the impression that he was extremely intelligent.

I rode an elevator with Lionel Richie after we had attended his concert, and he invited my buddy and I to an after concert party at the hotel we were all staying at. That was one heck of an experience.
How long did you stay at the party?
All night long. All night.

I had dinner with Robert Gates in the later nineties.
He was not a big fan of Bill Clinton but was pretty tactful about it.
Also met Norm MacFonald when he visited my college for a show I helped organize. A few of us posed for a picture with him and he put his arm around me, managing to cop a bit of side boob (I had a nice contour-following turtleneck knit on). I wish I could find that picture!
Had drinks at the hotel bar with Marc Martel after his concert, My husband was taking a picture of us, when a voice behind him offered to take a pic of all three of us. Dumbass.
I wonder why Hubby spends all of his time at the country club? To quote the KITH “Who would screw you???!!!”
We never intended to fall in love with each other; we were just trying to ride out difficult patches in our marriages
Yeah right. Riding out a difficult patch would be just going through the motions or taking up a new hobby. Finding some else to fuck is waking away from that marriage without giving up any benefits.
She’s right that taking up with her fellow cheater wouldn’t work. Not because of balance or some bs, but because she’s a liar and would soon run to the arms of another man whenever her next relationship caused her difficulty.
OT – yesterday I jogged by this house
It’s got a certain suburban Satan worshipping cult vibe. You know, Saturday nights, Chardonnay and ritual sacrifice in the den.
^This. The marble floor doesn’t help. Nor the very long table with convenient tie-down holes.
Looks like the public toilet at a suburban park built by a flush city council in 1988.

Some serious narcissistic personality disorder going on there.
It’s not an AI when you have to rig it to produce results that please the woke crowd…
In fact, good AI will likely show these people complaining are morons.
How does AI tech flaws mostly affect trans people?
Cause it is not rooted in woke logic, but real logic/data. Reality is not woke.
Properly handling trans people is actually a very difficult technical problem, sneers about “woke logic” aside. It usually requires using only a subset of the features available to handling non-trans people, and trans people strategically alter many of the things those features are built off of.
Wokeness is the very definition of artificially intelligent.
… they pointed out that current AI technologies’ flaws mostly affect trans people, persons of color and immigrants, so James isn’t the best person for a council formed to guide the responsible development of AI
It takes some chutzpah to throw “persons of color” into your list of things a black lady can’t responsibly give input on.
I saw this headline on the train this morning:
Anti-Semitism Is Back, From the Left, Right and Islamist Extremes. Why?
Normally I don’t read the NYT and never would have seen it if not for another passenger. Since to me it seems that large chunks of recent antisemitism are coming from the left and not the right it would seem that, as usual, the NYT has gone into damage control mode for the left.
“Islamist Extremes”
So, finally calling out Farrahkhan?
The identitarian left and the identitarian right continue to find commonalities.
Two side of the same collectivist coin.
Oh, and here’s an interesting translation for Hanami season, Sensei.
I too enjoy good “Engrish”. Although I don’t like to use that word for anything other than signs. I feel like I’m making fun of a person’s accent if I use it for speech.
Signs, shirts, instruction manuals, any written material qualifies.
Okaaay… what were they actually trying to say?
Only got half the sign, but something like “No Loitering, people are trying to walk here!”.
Needs a “In principle,” appended in there somewhere.
“We’d have more room to walk if you’d remove this big fucking sign!”
The Japanese is cut off so I can’t tell on the first one. And the second one is both cut-off and has some characters that I still haven’t learned.
But it’s cherry blossom season so they don’t want people entering and I’m assuming “walking” in certain places.
During Hanami, people will plop a tarp down under any cherry tree in town unless expressly told not to.

I saw the comments on the 737 Max in yesterday’s morning links and I didn’t want to comment on a dead thread. I work in the aerospace industry and am somewhat familiar with what goes on in the certification of airplanes.
My guess on what happened is that three supposedly rare events happened at the same time to cause the crash. The two crashes required AOA sensor (or the device that reads the AOA for the aircraft) to be bad, the autopilot to be off — that put MCAS into play, and finally the stabilizer to be in an extreme position. Boeing probably looked at the chances of this happening and decided it was so rare they didn’t need to do anything about it. Takeoff and landing aren’t large part of a flight so the chances of all three things happening during these flight conditions are probably pretty remote or at least they are supposed to be. How often do you work to make sure that when 3 rare (and I’m talking 1 in a 100,000 flight hours as rare) events happens, things go smoothly. Obviously Boeing was wrong but the assumptions they made may have been reasonable.
Pilot training is probably partly to blame as well and I’m not necessarily talking about MCAS. People use shortcuts or unapproved practices all the time and pilots are no different. My guess is the pilots at least tried one or two non-official methods before using the one Boeing told them to use in the flight manual. That delay contributed to the crash by delaying the time the electrical power to the stabilizers were cut off. That put the stabilizers in an extreme position and with the airspeed and the strength needed to manually bring the stabilizers back into near neutral made it next to impossible to correct.
The narrative has already been set but Boeing may have not have done much wrong. Maybe some incorrect assumptions is all they did wrong.
Be interested in your thoughts on this.
ET302 used the Cut-Out switches to stop MCAS
If this is accurate Boeing should have been able to see issues in simulation.
I’m thinking that is pretty accurate.
And I’m fairly certain Boeing has seen these in simulations. They just didn’t account for everything.
Takeoff and landing aren’t large part of a flight
I understand that you mean this as a percentage of time, but they are also the least steady-state times. And also, you’re closer to the ground by default.
Risk is measured on a per flight-hour basis. Take-off and landing are a fraction of an hour. It just part of the math in showing that the probability of a catastrophic event is less than 10-9.
Oh, like how chemical plants are totally safe except during startup and shutdown, so why worry we only do that once a year. I’m not necessarily faulting their metrics, but it seems like lumping non-steady state with steady-state is a good way to be wrong with statistics. As long as nothing goes wrong, you’re golden.
but it seems like lumping non-steady state with steady-state is a good way to be wrong with statistics.
That’s not how it works. First you identify potential failure cases. Then you identify the hazard posted by each failure case. Then you design a system to prevent/mitigate those hazards. Then you do the math to show that the probability of failure of the system meets the target based upon the hazard from each case. If the function is used throughout the flight, you calculate the numbers over the whole flight. If the function is used only as specific times, you calculate the number over that time frame. In this case, MCAS is always active. The numbers should have been calculated accordingly.
Can you plan for everything going wrong? A valve and its backup failing at the same time? You have to be realistic and sometimes what you think is realistic and what actually is are two different things.
“Can you plan for everything going wrong?”
Never. But unfortunately we do live in a litigious society that expects perfection. That we had 2 planes go down because of the same problem, tells me that someone botched up the statistics here.
We have a sequence of at least three failures:
1) the AOA vane broke (the latest report is birdstrike or foreign object damage on take off)
2) improper response by MCAS (could be a latent fault due to improper system requirements, but who knows as this point)
3) improper response by flight crew (either the emergency checklist is wrong, or the crew didn’t follow the list properly, or both)
It is likely, there will be other contributing factors discovered.
It’s way, way too fucking early to be making pronouncements about where the blame resides.
MCAS isn’t the issue, it merely exposed a latent issue in the plane (stabilizer trim runaway can become impossible to correct at certain speeds, especially when at low altitude)
If I understand correctly, the only way this problem happens is if:
1) AoA sensors malfunction into nose high attitude at low speed (which is more likely than at high speed)
2) flaps are retracted early in takeoff cycle (MCAS is disabled when flaps are deployed)
3) MCAS pushes stabilizer trim down to correct for perceived high AoA
4) pilots are late getting onto the runaway trim checklist
5) the speed of the descending plane reaches a point where, once the electric system is cut off, manual cranking on the trim wheel is ineffective due to aerodynamic forces
MCAS isn’t the issue,
Wrong
MCAS is the new part of the system. Runaway trim has been a potential failure case for as long as electro-mechanical systems have been used to move the horizontal stabilizer. The flight manuals have always provided instructions for dealing with runway trim.
The issue on the 737-Max is there is a new system that contributes to the failure case of runaway trim.
MCAS is the new part of the system.
Only relevant insofar as it helps identify the root cause, which is insufficient runaway stabilizer protection.
Back when I was squashing bugs in telecom systems, a common issue was that I’d get error logs with “execution path never goes here” as one of the final entries. Previous developers had coded up solutions that took into account the common execution paths at the time, but didn’t bother to code up anything for execution paths that new features were starting to use. Get enough uncommon things happening at the same time, and you end up in an empty branch of the software.
Is that the fault of the new feature? Not at all. The added code works just as it is supposed to. The bug was introduced 15 years before when some lazy developer decided to not fill in the 5 lines of code required to complete that execution path.
I see an analogous issue here. It’s a known issue with the 737 that at certain airspeed, the stabilizer trim cannot be manually adjusted. MCAS, for certain anticipated failure states (that are handled by the runaway trim checklist) can very rarely fall into this known issue, causing those crashes.
Perhaps they can fix the issue in MCAS, but at best the blame is shared between MCAS and the fact that the new operating procedures for the 737MAX cause the likelihood of encountering the latent runaway trim issue to rise.
depends on the criticality of failure and what the result could be. If it’s bad enough of a possible event, triple redundancy might be called for.
I’d like to get Chip’s reaction on this too, but as a punk kid working in Marine air traffic control unit, it was received wisdom that takeoff and landing were the most dangerous parts of any flight.
In the middle of your flight, you are all by yourself just humming along. Not much of a danger.
Takeoffs and landings include a lot of other planes crowded into the space you are in. Also, far more likely to hit a bird during those times.
I don’t think you can say that each hour of a flight has the same risks as each other.
I don’t think you can say that each hour of a flight has the same risks as each other.
And the safety process works that way. An autopilot failure in cruise does not have the same hazard level as the same failure at flare. So the numbers are crunched for the part of the flight separately.
This has all happened before and will happen again
When people attempt to quantify risks of unlikely events, they usually are just trying to fool themselves into feeling reassured.
Low risk != No risk.
Isn’t autopilot off during takeoff/landing? If so, one of your three is a given.
Twenty years ago, when I got out of the aerospace industry, the conventional wisdom was that it always takes 3 faults to drop a plane. My team was on QA, and really, its not the three faults that do it, its the interaction effects that do it.
Seems like not much has changed.
Critics of the Green New Deal rail against socialism. We’ve seen this before.
nationalizing forests…unregulated cutting had ravaged the nation’s forests
It’s done wonders for forest fire management.
Two wrongs don’t make a right.
The New Deal as an exercise in environmentalism might be the least plausible retcon of all time.
Um, TR created the national park system more than a generation before the Great Depression.
And the forests were nationalized more than a generation before that.
This isn’t really what he’s saying, but I agree that it’s not useful to call social democracy welfare-state garbage “socialism”. The S-word loses some of its opprobrium when it’s applied to things that aren’t state ownership of the means of production.
Also, don’t forget that Bismarck invented his welfare state partly to co-opt the commies and cut them off at the knees. It’s amusing to see today’s filthy communists praising the welfare state.
“This isn’t really what he’s saying, but I agree that it’s not useful to call social democracy welfare-state garbage “socialism”. The S-word loses some of its opprobrium when it’s applied to things that aren’t state ownership of the means of production.”
Fascism, a socialist system, is exactly what we have these people peddling now. The state purposefully avoids direct ownership, but uses its power to choose the winners & losers, and if in the process private sector entities go broke because of abusive and draconian regulation, its a bonus. They can both avoid the blame and then peddle government ownership as a solution. See Obamacare.
Its Socialism as interpreted by a pre-teen. “I don’t know where the money comes from, just give me free stuff because I want it.” Real Socialism TM is about the means of production. This bullshit is just about spoiled children who want a new mommy and daddy with a black credit card.
A lot of this.
I remember having a conversation with my ex about 1 year into our marriage because she was complaining we didn’t have the same living standards as our parents. You should have seen the look she gave me when I pointed out they had a 30 plus year headstart on us. Her parting comment was that she didn’t want to wait that long cause that was not right. And this was some 30 years ago. Things are even worse today, and too many of the younger people that have grown up in the “everyone gets a trophy” generation, feel they are owed.
I’m not saying I’m owed anything, but we’re about 20 years in to the effective 0% interest rate world, and it’s definitely making it harder to get off the ground. Perhaps oddly, my education loans are at like 6.5% interest or something like that despite this low interest environment. Probably because I’m subsidizing all the assholes who aren’t paying into theirs, but that alone is really pushing down my quality of life, never mind other factors like the growing Housing Bubble Electric Boogalloo 2.0.

Because that’s what happened and this is in no way taken out of context.
This is believed by as many people who believe Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her house. Up until the Charlottesville death, there were respected Civil War historians who advocated that Confederate monuments remain in place on the public square. These “good people” on that side of the issue, had to shut up and retreat or lose their respectability.
Obamacare has done far more to try and kill people. So has the current actions by lefty politicians around things like abortion. But orange man is the bad guy? yeah.

Google’s Advanced Technology External Advisory Council was supposed to oversee its work on artificial intelligence and ensure it doesn’t cross any lines. Now, the council wouldn’t be able to do any of that, because the tech giant has officially cancelled it just a bit over a week after it was announced.
What are the odds Google “disbanded” that group because the members called them and said, “You people are all crazy, and I want nothing whatsoever to do with you.”?

Re: Smollett
At the risk of sounding all “poignant thing eight year old said in hipster coffee shop”, I’ll throw this out there anyway. I was waiting on a breakfast order at McDonald’s last week and passively eavesdropping on two black women waiting at the counter ahead of me. They were absolutely fuming about this whole thing. They held Smollett in very low regard, and they were angry about city funds being wasted. Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal, of course, but I have a suspicion that this is the general sentiment currently shared by much of the city. People here are pissed.
He used public sentiment about real injustice to self aggrandize thereby hurting a legitimate cause. I’d be pissed, too.
The spectrum of responses I’ve seen from AA’s runs from “He’s harming legitimate cases of hate crimes” to “I DGAF because wypipo have been getting away with murder for years”. Probably play out in the black community much like the OJ thing did.
Yep. Team first, ethics later.
I was living in Memphis when OJ was arrested and a huge amount of black people I knew were totally against OJ. Mostly because he married a white woman.
If only they were angry about any other wastes of city funds.
They were putting on a show for your benefit so you didn’t go into berserker mode at the sight of two black women breathing your MAGA air and eating your MAGAdonalds.

How stupid do you have to be to not know where the edge is???
It is worth closing the Grand Canyon to tourists, because even one death is just too much. Who cares if millions are deprived of the experience if it saves one life?
Does drunk and stupid count?
The Hong Kong tourist sounds like an idiot. The other 2 sound like suicides.
I used to hike the canyon regularly when I lived out west. We’d see people doing stupid shit every trip. See Dunning-Kruger effect. And it was a romanticized suicide location.
Anyone else read a headline like that and assume it’s Instagram related?
Only one of them was known to be “taking photos”. I would bet my own money it was a selfie, with his back to the canyon. One was in the woods away from the canyon, and the old guy, who knows.
Jumping seems a really bad way to commit suicide to me, especially when there are so money easier ways to do it. Wouldn’t be my choice, is all.

Teen-aged Festus says “Yes, yes it does!”
Googled “Flavor Aid” and in addition to finding out it’s some gross sugar powder, it’s also what was used in Jonestown. Talk about fake news.
I thought everyone knew that Kool-Aid got a bad rep from Jonestown, that is was actually Flavor Aid.
Bet you I’m not the only one with gaps in beverage knowledge.
No, some of my beer posts have made that very clear.
Haven’t you received your FlavorAid packet in the mail yet?
What? Flavor-Aid? I just got some dumb Away Team gear (cheap black t-shirt, sweats and Nike’s).
I prefer the studies that look at overall mortality rate instead of cherry picking individual diseases.
I am okay with a 10-15% increase in stroke rate if there is a 20% reduction in other deadly diseases rate.
And that is what most longitudinal studies have show, 1-2 drinks per day is the sweet spot for mortality rate.
I’d rather incur a massive stroke or heart attack than die of a lingering disease over a decade in my twilight years in any case. Drink up.
Pat gets it! If the drink don’t get me the smoking probably will. Last time I saw a Doctor he said my blood pressure was “optimal” and I’ve been drinking and smoking for over forty years.

Are We Really Free?
Most restrictions on daily freedom are invisible to consumers because government implements them through businesses by limiting the options available or hiding the taxes.
conservative Christian libertarian
That’s an intriguing bundle of contradictions.
Most Americans think they live in a free society. They think that because they can find fifty varieties of salad dressing at the grocery store, choose from among a hundred types of wine at the liquor store, select a television channel from over 1,000 choices, download any movie or song they want from the Internet, and sit at home for hours playing the latest video game that they live in a free society. They are oblivious to the extent of government encroachment on their freedoms. They are complacent when it comes to government edicts. And they are ignorant as to what a free society really means.
Nick Gillespie to the white courtesy phone.
Not necessarily. You can be personally conservative and Christian and socially libertarian.
What you cannot be is personally progressive and libertarian, since progressivism requires society to comply with your demands.
>>That’s an intriguing bundle of contradictions.
but he doesn’t seem to be an ass about it:
It seems pretty close to my position.
I could definitely hang out with a libertarian nihilist.
I used to agree with that sentiment, but ultimately I think if that’s your outlook you’re probably better described as a paleoconservative. At the very least you aren’t going to fit in with very many people who describe themselves as libertarians. I never describe myself as such anymore. The old “republicans who smoke pot” trope has given way to “hippies who hate taxes”.
I think paleolibertarian fits better.
Of maybe just thin libertarian.
I’ve also come around to the position that Christianity and libertarianism, or even “classical liberalism” really aren’t compatible on any level and all attempts to reconcile them are cheap rationalizations because the pre-Enlightenment society that a fully consistent Christian ethics entails was mostly a piece of shit that nobody wants to live in anymore.
I am not sure what you think a fully consistent Christian ethic is, but I don’t think the enlightenment contradicts it in any way.
The Enlightenment was literally the total rejection of Christian religious authority in Europe, but Christ himself having rejected religious authority, I suppose it’s a manageable problem. However, the elevation of human reason to a position of self-sufficiency is the part that ultimately blows up the compatibility with Christianity. Which is why all of the Enlightenment thinkers who wished not to rock the boat too much compromised on deism. But deism is itself a rejection of Christianity and a bridge to a sort of pantheistic spiritualism, at best.
I agree with you on the rejection of religious authority (Priesthood of the Believer being one of the tenets of many protestant denominations) and that deism is a rejection of Christiantiy. But many enlightenment thinkers were Christian, they weren’t all deists.
There is nothing of the requirements of Christianity that are antithetical to reason or (thin) libertarianism.
In fact, Christ’s admonition of Peter for using the sword goes beyond even the NAP, as Peter was using it against the aggressor.
There is nothing of the requirements of Christianity that are antithetical to reason
It may depend on precisely how you define your terms, but I would argue that mysticism and gnosticism of any kind are essentially antithetical to reason, and they’re inseparable from Christianity (and most other religious practices as well). The very thing that defines most religious experience is some form of transcendent knowledge or revelation and belief in something which can’t be demonstrated on evidence.
I’ve never heard the Middle/Dark Ages described as fully consistent with Christian ethics, church ethics sure.
It’s not that the particulars of the middle ages were fully consistent with Christian ethics (and bear in mind that Christian ethics dates to 1700 years before the Enlightenment, not just to the couple of centuries immediately preceding it), but that a fully consistent Christian ethics necessarily entails foregoing a lot of the convenient parts of modernity that were only possible due to the rejection of religious authority generally and Christian dogma in particular.
I think you need to define “fully consistent Christian ethics”, but I have two small nits regardless of your definition.
1. No ethic can be fully consistent – I refer you to Goedel. It can be consistent or complete, but not both. So fully consistent is right out.
2. Ignoring that, one of the other tenets of all Christianity is that we are all imperfect, and will fall short of living that standard anyway. That doesn’t mean the standard doesn’t exist.
Fair enough, I’m throwing the term around more colloquially and obviously too broadly.
And, of course, by definition man is doomed to fail to meet the standard by Christ’s own teaching. But nevertheless man is admonished to strive for it, and not just to disregard it and beg forgiveness when the bill comes due.
As to a definition, I’d basically just say “in full compliance with the teachings of Christ articulated through the gospels”. Obviously it’s not quite that simple since the teachings of Christ weren’t transcribed until at least a half century after his death, and probably longer, and a substantial amount of early Christian orthodoxy was extrapolated by Paul. But the received teachings since the council of Nicaea I guess would be a good point of reference.
The ultra-Orthodox Lubavitch Jewish communities, for example, are sort of a case study in the same tension between tradition and modernity that I’m talking about. Living in full compliance with their faith is an arduous task in the modern world, and they aren’t very popular because of it. It’s a lot easier to sidestep the inconvenience parts of Judaism until such time as the diaspora is reunited and the temple re-established.
What part of “what you do in your house, I may not do in my house” is hard?

“When Democrats next have power, we should be bold and clear: We’re done with two sets of rules — one for the Republicans and one for the Democrats,” Warren plans to say. “And that means when Democrats have the White House again, if Mitch McConnell tries to do what he did to President Obama and puts small-minded partisanship ahead of solving the massive problems facing this country, then we should get rid of the filibuster.”
——–
Warren’s announcement appeared intended to send a clear message that if she were to become president she would aggressively pursue a liberal agenda and would hope to enact into law bills that likely would not have buy-in from Republicans. Her remarks are also likely to thrust the controversial issue of the filibuster in front of other 2020 Democratic presidential candidates.
Democracy is all well and good in theory, but we can’t let the representatives of a bunch of ignorant inbred hicks impede our march to the Promised Land.
Harry Reid must have been a sleeper agent. What a mendacious bitch.
Self awareness, she has none.
We’re done with two sets of rules…would hope to enact into law bills that likely would not have buy-in from Republicans
Yea it’s not like Team Blue already votes in lockstep to ram through unpopular legislation in the dead of night without a single opposition party vote.
How short-sighted can you be? It’s as if she’d never even heard of Harry Reid.
What’s really short-sighted about this is that removing the filibuster would (at least theoretically) help the Republicans far more than the Democrats. Since 1950 the Democrats have had 60+ seats (filibuster breaking numbers) for 8 sessions of Congress, while the Republicans have had this level of support for 0 sessions of Congress. But simple majorities, the Ds have had 22 sessions and the Rs 13 sessions in the same time frame.
I would be very surprised if either the Dems or the Reps ever see 60 Senators again, at least without some kind of major upheaval in our current parties.
Man dies after falling at Grand Canyon, third death in two weeks
What? I didn’t even know the government had shut down, gain.
That’s a rough two weeks for that guy.
Let’s see, dies first time, then three days, another death plus three days waiting and finally the third and final death and 3 days in a tomb. That is 9 days minimum. Yup. Math works out.
There’s an article that needs to be written “More people die in National Parks while government ISN’T shutdown!”
THIS IS ONE OF THE OCCASIONS THAT ZARDOZ WISHES HE COULD CONSUME POPCORN.
Can Zardoz consume things, or does he just vomit guns?

Antarctic: ‘No role’ for climate in Halley iceberg splitting
Well that’s a load off my mind.
I spend night after night worrying about icebergs and glaciers.
I worry about them while taking walks in the forest.

Is breastfeeding stigmatized?
Some dumb asshole donated money to make that happen.
Relevant
I’m sure many people’s minds were changed by this courageous and informative manoeuvre
In my experience there hasn’t really been any appreciable backlash against breast-feeding for forty years. This is just more “look at meeeeee!” syndrome than anything else.
Were the floating breasts launched right at sunup? Stealing the beauty from the Lord’s work? I’m sure Swiss will be catbutting those hooligans if so?
Re: Chicago PD trying to charge Jussie $100k for OT costs – he hasn’t been convicted of anything. Yeah, he’s an arsehole, but do we really want the precedent of the Chicago version of the Chicoms executing someone and then charging the family for the cost of the bullet.
Presumption of innocence, and burden of proof – applies to A-holes too.
Presumption of innocence, and burden of proof – applies to A-holes too.
Except this is a civil suit. And there will be a burden of proof (preponderance of the evidence) that the cops will need to meet to win the case. People who get cleared of murder charges do sometimes lose wrongful death suits.
Have some delusional jibberjabber
Warren’s background as a Republican-voting technocrat hasn’t stopped her from mobilizing populist anger at creeping plutocracy. But it did prevent her from assembling a decades-long record of decrying American imperialism, and defending left-wing governments the world over. Sanders’s socialist background, on the other hand, led him to do precisely this. And while that record of international leftist solidarity could be a liability with the American electorate, it’s a singular asset within the global left — and in an era when the survival of decent civilization likely depends on building a powerful, transnational left-wing movement, that is no small asset.
If the international socialist workers’ cadres could only vote, Bernie would be President. And the world would be saved.
Just when I start to think they can’t get any crazier…

I am pretty sure I have already seen this movie.

With the help of his foreign-policy adviser, the one-time left-wing foreign affairs blogger Matt Duss, Sanders has woven the Trump-Russia scandal — and the president’s broader affinity for foreign dictators — into a tale about the global struggle between the forces of democracy and the “authoritarian axis.” Plutocrats the world over are using their wealth — and the retrograde politics of right-wing nationalism — to insulate their privilege from the threat of genuine democracy, no matter the dire consequences for the poor, vulnerable minority groups, or even the planet’s survival.
That’s good enough for me.
*orders gross of Bernie 20 bumper stickers*
Triple-ply?
the Trump-Russia scandal
See, this is how you assume the conclusion.
And the notion that Bernie freakin’ Sanders is complaining about “affinity for foreign dictators” is, well, amusing.
insulate their privilege from the threat of genuine democracy
So now Brexit is a lefty thing, and the opposition to it is just a bunch rightwing plutocrats?

Communities across the country urgently need help to combat the looming threat of climate change, according to the authors of a report published by a panel of experts disbanded by President Donald Trump but which regrouped independently.
Recent devastating wildfires and heat waves, as well as less obvious changes to the climate such as higher nighttime temperatures “demonstrate the growing risks associated with climate change,” warned the Independent Advisory Committee on Applied Climate Assessment in its report. Despite this, “very little support exists” to implement policies to combat climate change, the panel said.
And while no part of the country will be untouched by the negative effects of climate change, the report warned there will be a “particular burden on the working poor (especially those whose livelihoods are directly tied to natural resources), indigenous nations, historically disadvantaged communities, the young and the elderly, and others who lack adequate resources to adapt.”
Taking advantage of citizen science and artificial intelligence were among its recommendations, as well as finding ways to incorporate scientific evidence into existing policies, and encouraging institutions to consider climate change as part of economic risk assessments. The findings were published in the journal Weather, Climate, and Society by the American Meteorological Society.
Coinciding with the release of the report is the establishment of the Science to Climate Action Network, an independent consortium of experts which aims to get civil society as a whole, as well as state, local, and tribal institutions involved in tackling global warming.
Speaking truth to power, in Trump’s America. Such brave.

looks like the month of April to me.
It’s already 115 degrees here 1/3 of the year, when it gets unbearable I’ll just move. See how easy?
“…the looming threat of climate change…”
It looms. It’s always looming. Right over your head. It’s almost here. Looming just around the next bend. Looming.
We’ve got, what, 11 1/2 years left?
The clock is ticking, dammit!
Someone posted the exact date of the 12 year announcement yesterday, I am working on something if anyone has that again.
I guess I can go look thru yesterday’s threads.
Only 4309 days left according to NPC daily.

“Denying the Neuroscience of Sex Differences
Since Simone de Beauvoir in the early 1950s famously asserted that “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman,” and John Money at Johns Hopkins shortly thereafter introduced the term “gender” (borrowed from linguistics) to avoid the biological implications of the word “sex,” a belief that no meaningful differences exist in the brains of women and men has dominated U.S. culture. And God help you if you suggest otherwise! Gloria Steinem once called sex differences research “anti-American crazy thinking.” Senior colleagues warned me as an untenured professor around the year 2000 that studying sex differences would be career suicide. This new book by Rippon marks the latest salvo by a very small but vocal group of anti-sex difference individuals determined to perpetuate this cultural myth.”

I love it. The reactionaries aren’t some conservative cabal of old white male researchers with irretrievably sexist ideas—it’s the feminist dead-enders.
This is stuff that’s been gone over multiple times. The jury isn’t out. It’s come in, delivered its verdict, gone home, ate dinner, gone to sleep and gone to work the next morning. Psychological differences between men and women are real. And they’re biological. When you look at the countries with the most egalitarian “gender” policies, the differences between men and women actually increase.
You and your freaking facts. Why can’t you just accept the woke narrative already, huh?
DA PENIS IS EBIL!
Until the majority of women become total dick hounds who will lower their standards after a few drinks and decide it is better to bang an old fat dude like me than go home empty handed, I refuse to believe that women and men don’t have bone deep differences in the way they think.
Can you ping me with a message or something when this happens? I’m sort of out of the loop.
I’m betting that Brexit will never happen. They’ll keep voting until the top men get the result they want.
I won’t take that bet even at favourable odds. The fix has been in since the start. The previous government laid low odds on Brexit and got burned (Hat-tip to whomever above).
Either it won’t happen, or Brexit will take a form where Britain is part of the EU – laws, regulations – but not in name.
They should have bought a vowel when DeGaulle shivved them in the shower decades ago.
Chainsaw down pants.
I mean, who hasn’t done this.
Across pants? Surely. Down pants? Not my cuppa tea.
I’ll admit that after a weekend of drinking and kimchi consumption, it has sounded like I have had a chainsaw in my pants.
The shitlord kids that had dirt bikes would rev them up and then yell “Ruuuuun, nigger nigger nigger!” This was about the time that Roots was on everyone’s TV set. I swear that series did more harm than help so far as smart-assed teenagers were concerned.
“I swear that series did more harm than help”
Constantly harping about grievances, endlessly picking at scabs and shaming people that had nothing to do with what happened in the past doesnt help? That’s surprising.
I keep seeing ads for a new movie about some civil rights heroine that fought against the *gasp* KKK.
Most of them are just desperately seeking a dragon to slay so they pick a dragon that is just bones and dust. Safer that way. There is a giant red dragon right in their face and they either cant see it or are scared to death to pick up the lance. Fucking cowards.
These weren’t racist kids, they were just shit-lordin’. It was funny to us to push boundaries. *No Negroes were hurt in the reminiscences of this White Male*
I’m betting that Brexit will never happen. They’ll keep voting until the top men get the result they want.
You can’t stop progress. World government is the only way to make us free and equal.
Yes, and you can’t let the plebs determine their own future. They don’t what’s best for them.
Smollett vs Chicago.
I guess in the grand sceme of things, I hate Chicago more. Not that I’ll be buying Jesse a drink anytime soon.
Everyone in this case case is so ugly and immoral we need Hayeksplosives to sort them out.
Absolutely, destroy everything, just to be safe.
I think this is like one of those Old Testament situations where The Big Guy gives everyone boils and sends a bunch of heavies from the next town over to kill everything that moves.
Very tempting. But if you’re too crazy for Pitt. I mean that’s a high bar.

Sean Penn lost interest because of his depression about Venezuela.
She’s been using the same brag for 30 years. When she shot “Reindeer Games” in my hometown she complained about all the mill workers being so petrified of her beauty that they wouldn’t approach her.
Sad.
Probably untrue. I would have went full force and probably been shot down in screaming flames but at least I would have died trying. She’s either full of shit or so off-putting that she doesn’t realize what a cunt she is.
No way. I dont believe it.
Charlize, there’s a pretty simple rule. If you find that you’re consistently rejected as a long-term prospect, the problem probably isn’t with them.
What a shitlord! Why does she have to wait for a man to step up and ask her out? Why doesn’t she just engage in some Montana foreplay (“get in the truck bitch”) and pick the man she wants?
So sad to see her stuck in dead end woman’s way of thinking.

That’s a lot of pressure. How to you commit to a hot chick that you can time your orgasms together?
She’s definitely a smokeshow, but she also looks like she’s had a lot of work done. That doesn’t bode well down the line; people who get a lot of face work done start looking rough as hell ten years down the road. Plus, she doesn’t strike me as someone who would be easy to hang out with. Like I envision a date with Charlize Theron involving a lot of effort on my part: a sommelier would probably be required, I’d probably need to take the day off to get ready, maybe contact a tailor a few weeks beforehand to tighten up the ol’ suit jacket. I mean, I’m just not reading her as a person who’s gonna be into meeting me for a few beers and a basket of calamari.
Probably right, but no harm in asking her if she’d like to hit your favorite dive bar for a few beers and laughs.
My guess: nobody hits on her because she has security, or a gaggle of sycophants.
Or she is batshit and five sentences into your first conversation she starts belittling you. I am guessing from what she said that every man she meets says “Yeah, ok. Thanks but no thanks” inside of five minutes.
Some friend of a friend took me and my buddies to one of those hoity-toity bars in Manhattan of the kind I would never choose myself, and within five minutes some female approached me, looked me up and down, and said “What are you doing here?”
I bet she is like that female.
What are you doing here?
“Hoping to pick up some skank for monkey-sex. Looks like I picked the right bar.”
Good question! Do you know any place around here with attractive women?
That’s a good point. Odds are you aren’t going to run into Charlize Theron sitting by herself at the bar. Odds are you’re not going to run into her anywhere at all, as she probably has a small town’s worth of security and hired assistants to shop for her.
What happened to the fat guy from Modern Family?
Followup to asshole who didn’t pay his bill after he was told about the money owed and picked up the account statement two months ago.
Ignored two months of phone calls, statement mailed to his house, never came back in, so we charged his card on file. He then immediately called, of course.
“I was in the hospital! I needed to talk to my bank first! How can you just charge my card! This is totally unethical!”
Some minor research shows he’s had about six addresses in the last two years, so I’m assuming he doesn’t pay his rent either.
Aw c’mon…. He’s good people!

“Ladies and Gentlemen, our next President of The United States – A Sack of Pertaters!” Crowd goes wild…
This is what cost her the election. You don’t vote for someone who shows this kind of frailty.
The majority of the people around her seemed completely unfazed by it. Like maybe it happened a whole lot more than we know.
