Another Saturday, another set of links. And I spent a delightful week dealing with regulatory issues, culminating in an audit finding that the typeface on one boilerplate warning was exactly 3/100″ too small. If I weren’t a libertarian before dealing with regulatory agencies (executive branch, I should mention), that would have made me one anyway. The highly-touted deregulation that Trump has supposedly been doing sure isn’t visible here in the trenches- and of course, all our material costs have jumped significantly because of the stupid tariffs. Which I’m sure is part of the 11 dimensional chess plan, right?
Whatever, I’m not a Team member anyway so I don’t have to rationalize their stupidity. I do, however, need to mention a few birthdays, starting with the monster saxophonist Gerry Mulligan; scientifically correct and politically incorrect biologist James Watson; brilliant comic writer and actor Phil Austin; and great American director (and my cousin) Barry Levinson.
Let’s get to the news.

“This textual analysis of Man Caves explores how former National Football League (NFL) star turned DIY Network host Tony “Goose” Siragusa uses Italian American stereotypes of the funny fatso, gangster, and unskilled worker, rooted in his life story, to “flex” hegemonic masculinity in ways that articulate what I call White diversity. This contradictory identity claims both victimhood and privilege for White ethnic masculinity. Analyzing Siragusa’s flexing of Italian American masculinity is especially timely in our present historical moment when White supremacists claim ethnic “diversity” to assert an aggrieved status without disavowing privilege. Siragusa’s flexing of Italian American masculinity reflects the wider historical moment in which White men, beyond White power movements, may claim an aggrieved but privileged status. The conclusion considers ways out of White diversity that feminist scholar-activists may pursue.”

Mike Golic is an idiot, but I liked his description of the Carson Palmer rule: No hitting the QB below the hemline.
Jack Lambert said something about no hit after the QB has thrown her hankerchief on the ground
Two words: Ben Davidson.
And the funny thing is, I can swear I remember a different play where Davidson sacked Dawson by picking him up, turning him head over heels and dumping him to the ground head first – but that isn’t “the play” that is most infamous (which was a late hit on a QB run).

The unknown civilian, identified in the press as a 64 year old man, was riding in a twin-seat Dassault Rafale-B fighter jet. As the jet was taking off the man’s ejection seat sequence was somehow triggered, sending him through the canopy.

I would argue the single biggest market distortion in terms of international trade is the US Navy being the world’s commerce protection force, and the US military being available to regime change the shit out of any country that nationalizes American factories.
If you got rid of the American Empire, a truly staggering amount of capital and industrial development would flood back into the continental United States. Not all of it, but a hell of a lot of it. Plus we could start paying off the national debt and release all the industrial capacity and human capital that’s serving the war machine to productive ends.
Oh wait, no, we need a dozen carrier battlegroups and bases in 163 countries because….uh….Putin?
In 1994 I was in Israel with a Jewish youth group. We got into a cab (note: Israeli cabbies, at least circa 1994, were the scariest drivers I have ever experienced before or since) to go to a shop one of the other people I was walking around Jerusalem with knew of. It happened to be in an ultra-orthodox neighborhood. The cabbie kicked the two girls we were with out of the car because they were wearing pants (!!!) and they ran the risk of being attacked by someone for not wearing a full length skirt.
Not the same thing, but this article just jogged the memory.

Must agree with your local crank on this one. We have some neighbours whom, though I like them fine, seem to believe that it takes a village. They haven’t taught their whiny little brats to respect their neighbours’ properties and privacy.
Your average glib
Sell your 0.1 acre postage stamp and go buy something in a neighborhood where kids can kick a ball and not cross 4 property lines. Yes it’s technically a rights violation. Yes, I think you knew what you were signing up for when you moved into the neighborhood.
I don’t mind them occasionally playing in the front yard. What finally made me snap was (a) beating our flowers to a pulp with sticks broken off of our tree, and (b) strewing candy wrappers and other trash all over the yard. Both of these happened numerous times after their being asked, then told, then yelled at, not to do that. Finally came the trespass warning.
Yeah, that’s more than accidentally kicking your ball over the fence. . .

“We felt that steak should be kept for real steak with meat and come up with a new moniker for all these new products. There is a lot to be done in this front, a lot of creativity will be needed,” he said. “People need to know what they are eating. So people who want to eat less meat know what they are eating – people know what is on their plate.”
Because reading the actual ingredients before you buy a product is far too much of an imposition. What a colossal waste of time and energy.
Oh, tangentially related: https://www.africanews.com/2019/04/05/lab-grown-meat-could-be-on-shelves-in-5-years-scientists/
I know most vegetarians don’t go so far as to say that eating meat is immoral and cruel but some do so vehemently. I wonder, if this becomes a truly viable option will they still protest or indulge in joy of cooked flesh? Probably. Too much virtue signaling capital in that but who knows.
Won’t even be close to a good ribeye. Why bother?
Personally I wouldn’t but then again I’m not a vegetarian.
I do say that eating meat is immoral and cruel, but only if asked directly. If they get lab-grown meat to work well, I’ll be interested in trying it because the cruelty and immorality are eliminated. The one meat I wouldn’t even consider trying is chicken.
See, I don’t really understand why you’d feel that way. Is it because of the standards and practices of raising livestock for slaughter? The deaths in and of themselves? If it’s the living conditions I’d content their lives would probably be more harsh and short in the wild and if it’s the deaths, well, no human can continue living unless other animals die. Be it from slaughter, pesticides, loss of habitat due to farm land, ect. And why not chicken in particular?
The closest thing I have to a religion is a respect and awe regarding sentience. The “in the wild” argument doesn’t move me much because it isn’t like millions of cows or pigs would be roaming around if we didn’t deliberately breed and modify them specifically for the purpose of slaughter- for me, it’s immoral to create a sentient creature, then kill it. Or to kill a sentient creature that is not threatening me or others (I have no hesitation killing in self-defense or to protect my food supply). I stress “for me”- as a libertarian, I do NOT want to legally restrict the choices of others, preferring non-asshole persuasion.
The chicken thing is simple- whenever someone eats something disgusting like a rat or a lizard or an armadillo or whatever and they’re asked about it, the answer is always the same. “Tastes just like chicken.” Well, if chicken tastes like that shit, I don’t want it in my mouth.
I can respect that. I personally don’t hold sentience to be the standard for my dietary habits seeing as my evolutionary biology is to be omnivorous but I get it. While not a religious person myself(raised very literal-interpretation-of-the-bible evangelical protestant) I do value life and see no reason to be creal to a creature prior to slaughter but I’ll never hold another animals life with equal or greater value than that of a human being. I’m an unapologetic specist.
To be clear, I do not hold animal life as equal to or greater than human life in value, which is why I have no problems spraying for mosquitos or controlling rats to prevent disease. Likewise, I will protect my family’s food supply. But if an animal is not threatening me or other humans, I will not kill it. And I might not in the latter case, depending on the humans and why the animal is threatening them.
I hate to say this OMWC but mother nature is a mean-ass bitch. We just are where we are on the food chain. She is gonna kill you just like she kills every other critter. If it’s not a lion eating you from the ankles up, a fluke eating you from the inside out, a thug breaking into your house and cutting your throat then it will be cancer or diabetes. She is gonna kill you because fuck you. We can mitigate the cruelty somewhat but we cant change the nature of the world. You live in a society where you can afford to not take part in the most visible of the ugliness and if you choose to do so I wont discourage you, but make no mistake, the mass production of vegetable matter involves just as much cruelty and sacrifice of life as the raising of cattle.
We didn’t make the world. We are just trying to live in it. I would change the rules if I could. I really would, even at the cost of my life, but I cant.
I understand that argument, but as a creature with developed cognition and ability to reason morally, unlike a lion or a fluke, I can make a choice.
The burglar would not get past Wonder Dog and SP, so I wouldn’t have the chance to demonstrate my complete willingness to kill in self-defense.

The climate changing warnings have me in a funk, along with Ex Prez Carter. During my lifetime I have been a major contributor of green house gases, as I drove here and there, going on rides in my car, taking unnecessary trips on vacations, etc. Now with my grand children are facing the certainty of global something or another the guilt has become insurmountable. I wish there was a way I could pay down some on my climate change debt, maybe making a distribution or contribution for all the harm I have unknowingly caused.
I see the wrath of the climate god is about to descend on me next week in the form of a major weather event (mega-blizzard predicted at this time) and perhaps I could stave off this catastrophe with an offering to those science experts that are all knowing, in the form of a personal grant (in cash). Any suggestions?

Why are these cases almost always women?
Men are supposed to be the violent sex that needs to be purged of its toxicity, yet in all these cases where a parent kills all their kids its a woman that does it.
Upon asking my wife, she just said that women are crazy.

I think because she claimed it was some black guy?
I have an adopted son who’s black and I am deeply disturbed by this. You went out of your way to take on these children. It’s fugging evil either way, but to collect up a half dozen kids the hard way and then not only fail at protecting them, but purposely harm them, well, I wish the hell story was real so I could know that’s where they are.

I found an old Rothbard interview in Reason.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/rothbard.com/2014/10/16/1973-reason-interview-with-leonard-liggio-and-murray-rothbard/amp/
He makes some interesting remarks about the Viet Cong and the IRA:
Blockquote>REASON: Murray, how do you account for the reports of civilian atrocities committed by the Viet Cong and by the I.R.A. in Northern Ireland?
ROTHBARD: Well, the Viet Cong wipes out government tribal chiefs—who are appointed by the Government in Saigon—but not innocent civilians. The reports of Viet Cong atrocities in Hue were false- first, not as many civilians were killed as was claimed by the “kept” press. And most of the civilians who died were killed by American naval bombardment when the Viet Cong took control of Hue. It wouldn’t make any sense for the Viet Cong to kill innocent civilians.
In Northern Ireland, the I.R.A. on the whole has tried to pinpoint its targets. While they may have gotten a little careless, what I said before is basically still correct for the I.R.A. in the Catholic areas in Northern Ireland. The I.R.A. ordinarily will attack, say, only a post office, where British troops are located. The British, of course, rely on mass sweeps and other counterrevolutionary tactics in Catholic areas to get the I.R.A. leaders. I think the I.R.A. tends to be more terroristic in places like Belfast—in Protestant areas, where they don’t have mass support.
What’s with you and Rothbard? Are we supposed to disavow him because he said some edgy stuff 40 years ago during the fog of war when the US certainly was spreading misinformation through the press? I don’t think there are that many Rothbardians around here anyways.
I used to be an avid reader of Rockwell and Raimondo so I read quite a bit of Rothbard as well. This is the sort of stuff that embodies the worst aspect of their foreign policy views that I always found very off-putting.
He tried reaching out to the anti war left in a bid to gain momentum for an adherents to his brand of libertarianism. That means he ended up saying stuff that sounds pretty bad in retrospect. To his credit, he gave up on the anti war left when he realized they were only anti “the correct” war. It ended up in failure and I don’t see the problem with at least making the attempt.
You are being a bit generous to Rothbard. He embraced a Leninistic revolutionary defeatism. The NVA victory was a cause for rejoicing in his mind which is quite different than questioning the media or appealing to the antiwar movement.
Also since war is bad America’s enemies can never be guilty of any atrocities since that means the warmongers are right about something.
Also he says “it wouldn’t make sense” to kill civilians since, the rest of the article makes clear, the Viet Cong are engaged in a people’s war that is libertarian so wouldn’t do that sort of thing.
I could also post again Rothbard finding the Khmer Rouge victory to be “exhilarating” and a cause for libertarians to “rejoice” which is a bit different then questioning US media spin.
Does make one wonder, given how obvious it is to us now that the left cannot be allied with, that maybe Rothbard should have seen that back then as well. But I wasnt alive then.

It seems like everything in our society these days is geared towards generating content for social media.
At least among my millennial cohort, everything people say (post) and do (photograph) is specifically curated toward getting the most likes on Facetwitgram. Very few people just do things anymore; its all fakery designed to create the best possible social post. As someone who only uses those services for work and professional purposes this is very frustrating.

Tom Friedman says England has lost its mind
Seriously, the United Kingdom, the world’s fifth-largest economy — a country whose elites created modern parliamentary democracy, modern banking and finance, the Industrial Revolution and the whole concept of globalization — seems dead-set on quitting the European Union, the world’s largest market for the free movement of goods, capital, services and labor, without a well-conceived plan, or maybe without any plan at all.
Both Conservative and Labour members of Parliament keep voting down one plan after another, looking for the perfect fix, the pain-free exit from the E.U. But there is none, because you can’t fix stupid.
The entire Brexit choice was presented to the public in 2016 with utterly misleading simplicity. It was sold with a pack of lies about both the size of the benefits and the ease of implementation, and it continues to be pushed by Conservative hard-liners who used to care about business but are now obsessed with restoring Britain’s “sovereignty” over any economic considerations.
Not because they have squandered their legacy of enlightenment values and freedoms, but because they don’t want to be subsumed by globalist fanatsists like Friedman. Why, without the clout of EU membership, England will have no more of a future in the world economy than Somalia.
Brexit will turn England into a hermit kingdom no different than North Korea. What else could possibly happen?
This is a big opportunity for England. They could become the Switzerland of the EU, the place everyone in the EU goes to get away from their Bullshit. Do I think that’s what’s going to happen? Hello no. England is going to continue it’s slide into socialist nanny state hell. England surprised everyone with it’s Brexit vote results. Maybe they could surprise us all and remind the world of why they were once so great.
In fact, Corbyn wants Brexit so the EU doesn’t hold back his Leninist dream.
They are at an actual “turning point”. Not the fake ones pols always BS about.
I seriously do not know what he’s worried about. The EU successfully installed their stooge, Teresa May, to kill Brexit. And if she ever leaves, they will install another EU stooge to replace her.
This is the guy who admires fascist China. Yeah, let’s listen to him.
“The life of an Orioles fan is not easy.”
I’m really getting sick of hearing about Davis and his inability to hit. I figured ownership would have had him cut by now, but that contract is still hanging around their neck and the Angelos kids would rather pay him to play and strike out looking 4 times a game instead of benching him. He’s got a good glove at first base and has even made some run saving plays this year, but he still doesn’t have a hit. It will be interesting to see what secret homeless manager Brandon Hyde does with him later. Or it will be interesting to see what the Angelos kids tell him to do with Davis. Either way, Davis is their worst siging since Albert Belle and prior to him it was the masterful fuckup that was the Glenn Davis deal. Dem O’s really got a knack for fucking up big contracts.
If they want someone to strike out I could do it far cheaper and would look pretty funny while doing it as well.
Belle and Davis were brutal mistakes, but I submit that the worst O’s signing ever was Alan Wiggins. The team never recovered from that.
Meh. Try dealing with the Red Sox and their -6 ERA. I’m old, I’ve seen this before – they have some lumber, and no pitching.
Meh, try dealing with not winning a pennant in 35 years. Most likely 36 after this year. What I wouldn’t give for one of the four rings Boston has won in the past 15 years. And I was born two years after the last ring the Orioles won in 83, so I never got to see the glory years of the O’s and revel in the times when the yankees and red sox sucked in the 60s, 70’s and 80’s. (Save for 77, 78, and I guess 86).

Ejection seats have been pretty good about not firing accidentally. I’m assuming (they are in the US) the French military checks them pretty regularly. People who get a chance to fly in a jet with an ejection seat are supposed to get some training before they get in the airplane and I’m fairly certain that includes instructions on what not to grab (like the ejection seat handle) in the cockpit.
Also ejections are pretty violent events and it is not unusual for somebody to be injured doing so. It is better than dying in an airplane crash. Also, depending upon the problem, the force of the ejection will sometimes bring an airplane back into level flight. There is an F-102 (or F-106) in the National Museum of the United States Air Force where the aircraft was in a flat spin, the pilot ejected, and the aircraft recovered and landed in some farmer’s field still running. There was very little damage to the aircraft.
The early ejection seat were brutal and often resulted in back injury. The newer systems have a more controlled acceleration.
The ejection process ain’t easy. First you you have get rid of the canopy somehow. Dam’ed airstream wants it to stay where it is — and it reacts differently when blown at 100 knots than at 600 knots. Then after the canopy is blown you have to start the ejection seat process — two pilots are more complicated to do than one. And controlling the acceleration means the seat has to know various things — like how much the pilot weighs. One of the more recent issues the F-35 faced was they discovered the ejection seat was causing problems for the lighter (I’m think 100-125 lb) pilots. This was after they fixed the problem with the 250 lb pilot.
Seems like accidently being ejected would make the ride more fun. Great bar story as well.
Kowtowing to the identitarian overlords
Buttigieg could face some hurdles on his record on race issues. For example, a 2015 instance surfaced this week of Buttigieg saying “all lives matter,” a statement often seen as diminishing the Black Lives Matter movement.
Buttigieg made sure to emphasize a different message at the conference, using the phrase “black lives matter” in his speech.
He also addressed the incident when speaking to reporters after his speech.
“What I did not understand at that time was that that phrase just early into mid- especially 2015 was coming to be viewed as a sort of counterslogan to Black Lives Matter,” Buttigieg said. He later added, “Since learning about how that phrase was being used to push back on that activism, I stopped using it in that context.”
It’s like juggling chainsaws while riding a unicycle and playing the Star Spangled Banner on a kazoo.
As far as I am concerned, kissing that formerly-fat fuck’s ring is an automatic disqualification. That leaves… Biden? I think?
It looks they it’s been decided they don’t want Biden with all of the “#metoo” stuff.
I remain flummoxed how *anyone* outside of the most insane activists could take issue with the phrase “all lives matter”. That’s about as milquetoast of a statement as anyone can make, yet it’s somehow unwoke.
It’s a slippery slope. You start with “all lives matter” and then you end up saying “it’s okay to be white.” What’s next? A Trump supporter?
The most insane activists are the ones running the Party now.
A commie world, but first a commie Iowa
“Caroline Schoonover has two immediate goals. One of them is to systematically dismantle capitalism.” LOL
Someone should just mansplain this to her. Our public school system has doomed any hope of a decent future for humanity.
Someone else should mansplain to her that without capitalism, there IS no Vanderpump Rules.
Poor little confused thing.
The arrogance is pretty astounding
It could mean winning over skeptical voters like Francis Byrd, a financial analyst from Brooklyn. To him, Buttigieg is too inexperienced to be running.
“He’s leveraging his white male privilege. And I understand that he’s an openly gay man, but white openly gay men have privilege, too,” he said. “The point is that it gives him something additional to leverage that many of the other candidates in the race who have announced don’t have.”
What’s his plan? What does he believe? Who cares?
What matters is what box(es) he fits in.
In other words, your concerns are yoctometer deep.
This is special! We have to stop ORANGEMANBAD at any cost; doesn’t matter if the Dem nominee is the reanimated corpse of Pol Pot, Trump must not be allowed to win!
Like many Democratic voters, regardless of race, he just wants a win next year.
My shocked face! Why that is exactly what a Republican would say.
On topic: Wouldn’t call it science, but Baily threw out some interesting numbers on Climate Change the other day.

When I see absolutes tossed around (such as 810 T, 3.4%. 1.6 degrees, 81 years) I look at the weather forecast for a week in advance and still have no idea if I can wear a short sleeve shirt.
I can predict with a near certainty however, regardless as to which party gets elected, taxes will go up and freedom will go down.
Stolen for the Twitter. That’s a perfect summation.
The chick at the top of the pidgin article: would.
Also, the man cave article: I read that abstract three times and couldn’t make heads or tails of any of it. The words were English, but arranged in such a way as to make zero sense. It really is amazing what currently passes for scholarship.

24, 25, and 26 are a trifecta.
Women’s Studies = Professional Bitches. See these 10 new ways to hate on white men! You won’t believe number 9. They’re just your basic idiot skanks who falsely believe that they’re witty and intelligent because they took a few college courses. I know something you don’t know. Nevermind that what I know is tripe.
WTF?
Three powerful House committee chairs asked Capital One for documents last month related to President Donald Trump’s business empire — and the financial giant said it was already preserving documents but needs a subpoena in order to comply, according to letters obtained by POLITICO.
The March 11 request from House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) comes amid intensifying congressional scrutiny of the president’s financial records and tax returns.
The lawmakers asked Capital One for all documents related to the president’s revocable trust, the Trump Organization and other subsidiaries of his financial empire. Notably, the Democrats asked for documents that might have been turned over to special counsel Robert Mueller.
In a March 21 response to the committee leaders, Capital One executive Brent M. Timberlake said the corporation is “preserving the documents and materials,” but could only turn over the information if the committees issue a subpoena.
“Given the confidentiality obligations we have as a financial institution, including under state and federal law, we respectfully request that any production of materials be made pursuant to a subpoena rather than an informal request,” Timberlake wrote.
I can’t help wondering what sort of legal justification there could possibly be for this sort of request.
I can’t help but think there is a double purpose to this;
1. Try to dig up dirt on ORANGEMANBAD
2. Chill any non-machine elites from considering running for office in the future
Make running for office/being in office such a miserable, intrusive and destructive process that normies won’t even consider getting involved. Same goes for locking up campaign workers for process crimes. Work for the wrong candidate and all of a sudden those 3 felonies a day become extremely important.
I just want team red to reciprocate. Investigate, don’t legislate. Castigate the retrobates.
In my head, I read that in Jackie Chiles’s voice.
Here’s the problem: Team Red does not oppose this. They don’t want upstarts intruding on their turf, either.
Team Red is the controlled opposition.
If every Senator and Representative was replaced by a randomly selected voter who cast a vote for them, you’d see a pretty damn sharp shift to the right. The most conservative Republican politicians are decidedly more leftist than their constituents.
Democratic politicians are elected to advance the leftist agenda, and Republican politicians “grow in office” and provide “the conservative means to accomplish leftist goals”.
Man, I’m torn on this. On the one hand, it just seems to be the next step for people who are convinced that Trump is unethical/dishonest, etc. and so I should oppose this completely.
OTOH: scorched earth…demand all financial records for everyone in Congress, the Executive Branch, federal judiciary, etc. Get all that shit out in public.
Except in the media it’s all going to devolve into populist wealth shaming.
Absent a Constitutional amendment making an unblemished financial history a requirement for the job, it’s nobody’s damn business beyond whatever legal framework already exists to stop fraud, a framework which I believe excludes obvious politicized fishing expeditions.
Yeah, you’re right.
Nick Lowe live on Todd-o-phonic Todd’s radio show today. 3-6pm EST on WFMU 91.1 fm in northern New Jersey/NYC. Or on the internet at wfmu.org. Or stream via the wfmu app.
I’m still happy you turned me on to that station. Its often my “filler music” on saturday afternoons
Thanks!
Tried getting it, but they wanted to put shit on my computer. Did Lowe have a lot of good songs besides “Cruel to be Kind”? Because I can watch a UTub cover vid of that with a hot chick that’s not Lowe’s actual wife: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QjT3u_m3a0
The stream? I’ve not had any issues.
And Lowe will be telling stories and spinning hot stacks of wax, if past shows are any indicator.
Only other one I can think of is ‘Heart of the City’.
Huh? There were lots!
Like this.
Or this.
And of course this.
This one is sublime
Okay, I’ll definitely give you that one.
That’s a Johnny Cash song
Never heard that one
Sorry, Tundra, I’ll go with Hyp’s rec on this one. I was aware of the song you noted. Not bad, but kind of meh. At least for me.
If it’s your groove, though…
Hey, there’s enough out there for everyone.
Lowe is clever and funny and writes good pop songs. The musicians he has influenced are legion. I’ll listen just for the funny stories.
I’m kind of ashamed to admit it, but I didn’t know Peace, Love and Understanding was a Nick Lowe song. I’ll give it up for that.
Also, TY for the info.
But now you have me searching Elvis Costello on YT.
I saw Elvis back in November. He is still fucking amazing. If you get the chance, go see him.
He closed the show with that tune and blew the roof off the place!

Well maybe our lawyers can instead then.
A happy story for once.

Gatekeepers
Apparently Trump went down to the place where they keep all the black Republicans—you know the place where Candace Whateverthefuckherlastnameis and Ray Lewis and post-CTE Jim Brown and that pastor with the conk and Isaiah Washington and the not-Don Lemon black guy that had the shaky chin the night “Trump became our president.”
Trump reportedly went down to that place and measured a few blacks before deciding on former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain. The move isn’t official but Trump is reportedly considering Cain for the Federal Reserve board and is awaiting his physical results and 40-yard-dash times.
According to USA Today, assuming that Cain posts good results in the bench press and clears a background check, the former Godfather’s Pizza CEO is going to become the senior most black in Trump’s brood.
Saying bad stuff about black people is unacceptable and racist. Unless you’re talking about those crazy Uncle Toms who don’t stay on the plantation.
*let the seething racist hatred flow*
“pastor with the conk”
LOL, haven’t seen that word in print for 60 years. With our privilege we used it all the time to describe a particular Johnny Mathis style ‘doo. My, how times change
How to turn that F into an A in 1 EZ step! ~ Teen Vouge.
#1 will surprise you!
Back from family trip to San Diego and a day trip to Tijuana. Being with the nephews was great. They’re both introverted but have finally latched on to me, which was my main goal coming home. I don’t want to be the weird uncle that my nephews don’t know or trust. Buying weed from a store was a fucking revelation. Padres lost 3-2 to the Giants in the game that I saw solo. Really enjoyed it.
I’m almost through an onboarding process with an online editing gig but I’m having trouble with software. Both Word and LibreOffice (which are my options) have really unintuitive controls for tracking changes and it’s pissing me off to no end. The work is done on pencil-and-paper; I just have to make it look right in the program. Which is not my strong suit. I have until Sunday night to finish my task, which is also when Lady is flying out to Chiang Mai. I’ll be meeting her on April 19th.
Got the youngest’s bday party today in a couple of hours and then I’m getting whisked off to see my dad’s play in IndyFringe. My mom’s newest play debuts next week. My retired parents have interesting hobbies. Mom’s is very well-written. Dad is a bit obsessed with his relatively newfound (to him) diagnosis with Asperger’s. So everything he has written in the last couple of years is hilariously focused on the topic. Which is fitting, but doesn’t help his output. He’s an odd man, and because of our similarities I have been deemed The Person who can talk and relate with him, with the constant urging of the rest of my family to try and talk him out of some of his zanier schemes.
I saw a psychiatrist and surprisingly he gave me meds, which I can say I can tell have had an immediate and positive effect.
The Cubs lost (AGAIN) last night 13-10. At least we’re hitting.
There is a bunch of shit going on in my life right now.
Wayyyy too late for me.
CNN navel-gazer ponders “ride sharing”
It’s easy to take for granted just how much on-demand services have changed our lives, starting with ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Lyft.
But every now and then, a jarring headline makes us wonder how it became so normal so quickly to jump into a stranger’s car.
——-
Other experts agree that for many users, the utility of ride-hailing outweighs any moral or ethical compunctions they elicit.
Ride-hailing companies benefited from a lack of oversight and regulation that allowed them to grow quickly, Waheed said. Now, cities and states are playing catch up to close some of the loopholes that gave the platforms a competitive edge over traditional taxi businesses.
Once upon a time, It was no big deal to stand on the side of the road with your thumb out, hoping some random stranger would stop and give you a ride. But the nannies had to put a stop to that. Now, we have the scourge of cell-phone-enabled hitchhiking. This, too must be dealt with.
“Moral and ethical compunctions”?
Won’t somebody think of the monopolists in the taxi cartel?
Like, a taxi?
Everything for the state, nothing against the state, nothing outside the state.
I am 100% dead serious that I would buy a book entitled “The Wisdom of Suthenboy”.
