I lived in LA for 2 years. Kinda loved it, also thought it was a giant insane asylum.
It seems like a place completely dedicated to getting progressively worse. I always wished I could visit old Los Angeles when there was literally orange groves and hollywood everywhere. I left there almost 25 years ago – when there was a Republican Mayor and Governor. Went back for a business a few times – they are trying really hard to make the place suck.

I’ve only visited, but it’s one of the ugliest cities I’ve ever been to. The drive up the coast was stellar, though, except for the two hours of stop and go traffic on the way back. Ugh. No wonder they think trains are so awesome, they’re at least moving most of the time.
I’ve had similar experiences. First visit we were in town the whole time (except for a very eye-opening visit to Venice Beach) and I thought it was an ugly, dirty town.
Second visit we took the PCH from LAX to Oxnard. That drive really drove home the reason why so many people live there. Beautiful.
There’s everything here. We have multitudes of canyons, deserts, a huge variety of beaches, big city stuff, you name it. One can literally surf, ski, rock climb and off road through the desert before lunch.
Yes – also the worst traffic, highest taxes, and most oppressive nanny-state liberals in country. It’s like for every pleasure the place provides, they have to inflect a pain.

Lived there (mostly Long Beach) for not quite two years. Loved it at first, grew to hate it more and more until I decided one day that I wasn’t going to live there anymore. Quit my job, packed up the car, and moved back to Virginia. Whole process took three days.

I finally caved and set my home setup / lifting cage up outside. It’s been raining more or less constantly ever since, and has made it impossible to get into a rhythm. When it’s not raining the NC pollen cloud of death does its best to choke the life out of me.
I need structure to keep myself motivated, so it’s pretty much just been a complete non-effort to get back into shape on my part 🙁
I drink a lot so my life requires structure and discipline. If my routine gets fucked with, things can go rapidly pear-shaped and not in the good egould way.
I’m not sure what qualifies as a lot around here, but I’m a 3-4 beers most evenings kind of guy, so if I let myself settle in when I get home, physical activity is probably right out the window. Basically I need a script where I find myself changed in front of the bar where I don’t think about it. Which means it needs to stop goddamn raining.
My work is my work out so I’ve got that going for me…

Yeah, that is my greatest problem there. Having led an, erm, lets call it “very active life”, I have a ton of broken bones, old injuries, and worn-out artificial parts, that now scream at me every time I try to push too hard, because of the craziness of my younger years. All that stuff I powered through back when, now is making sure I am reminded that I can no longer claim it is just a question of “Mind over matter” (meaning that if I don’t mind it, it won’t matter). It hurts.
I’ll be 55 come December but I’m still pretty fit. If it’s not one thing it’s another when it comes to aches and pains. I abused my body like a five buck whore when I was young and now I am dealing with the consequences.

Jumping out of planes, going to exotic places, and killing the commie locals sounded like to much fun for me to not do that, and I have the injuries, scars, and pain to remind me that sometimes what seems fun and cool when you are young, will not be so much fun later in life.

I had managed to keep myself in pretty decent shape for almost 60 years – consistent running and weights since high school. Then last year a foot injury and work schedule turned up to eleventy-thousand. Didn’t run for most of a year and hadn’t touched my ghetto gym on my rooftop for most of that time as well.
So now that I quit that job and have more time to devote to working out I am finding it really difficult getting back in the saddle. I’ve been looking at a lot of new techniques and exercises on U-toob, trying to motivate myself into a new routine.
Admitting to myself that I no longer can do what I used to do – even just 5 years ago – has gone a long way into preventing debilitating injury, a leading cause to losing this fight. That having been said, it is galling to realize you need to turn it down a notch cause otherwise things that used to make you stronger now make you a hurt bitch.
Foot injuries are the worst. That is all.
It’s a deceptively complicated part critical to posture and locomotion, and yet they don’t grow back continuously with wear. And while we’re on the subject, Mother Nature, whycome only beavers, crocodiles and sharks get endless teeth, wtf.

You have no idea. The previous tenant here was apparently going to build a shed. Which meant sort of kinda putting in some structure, burying some cinderblocks and just generally fucking up what was pretty much the only flat spot on the property. The amount of work I’d have to do to get all that out of there, then put down a foundation that’s level enough to lift on…yikes! All to the benefit of my landlord. No thanks. If I owned the place maybe.
I once built a fence in my backyard without a wheelbarrow. Doesn’t sound that bad until you realize I carried over 60 50-lb bags of concrete from the garage to where the post holes were.

I spent a lot of time in Italy and had an office just outside Venice. Venice was by far my least favorite place in that wonderful country. Smelly, dirty, horrible traffic, dangerous, and not all that pretty.

Did a trip to Bellagio (Lake Como), Venice, Florence & Rome a couple years ago. I’d love to re-visit all of those places – except Venice. It felt like Disneyworld – not a real place, with actual residents.

When I had my basement finished, I paid the contractor in cash (in increments). That kept him and his guys happy and the work speeding along nicely.
Yeah, I always tell them I will pay 1/3 up front (not the usual 50-75% they ask for regardless of their reasoning), 1/3 as I see they are coming to an end. And the last third once the job has been concluded to my satisfaction. If they won’t agree I look elsewhere for my work to be done. This approach keeps them engaged and interested in finishing quick and without doing a piss poor job, so they can collect.
I do roofs and don’t take any money until the roof is finished customer satisfied.

I’d run them off, but the guys I brought in might be the type who don’t show up on Monday, either.”

Instead he kept rolling on top of me, then rolling off, then sitting up, then rolling on top of me. At 5am I handed him my iPad and tried to crash on the couch. That one, who is 3, is not a great sleeper, so I get that every other week or so. But the older one never comes downstairs. He told me he had a really bad dream and he didn’t want to be in his own bed. From the way he was trying to choke me out once he got in our bed, I think it must have been a rough night.

Students at Georgetown University voted on Thursday in favor of a referendum approving a tuition fee, which would pay reparations to descendants of the enslaved people from the university’s past.
Maya Moretta, one of the students at Georgetown who advocated for the resolution’s passing, told Newsweek that after working as a research assistant at the Georgetown slavery archives, she realized the student body had a unique opportunity.
“We have so many records and the ability to really trace back descendants,” Moretta said. “I think it’s an amazing opportunity for Georgetown students to act on a form of reparative justice, which is a trend that’s being talked about across the country.”
The referendum is titled GU272 after the 272 enslaved people who were sold in 1838 from Jesuit plantations. It helped pay Georgetown’s debt. The referendum advocated adding a fee of $27.20 to each student’s tuition per semester, beginning in 2020. Hunter Estes, a senior at Georgetown, opposed the referendum, in part, because it didn’t specify where the money would go.
“You had students with an idealistic vision and what I’m sure is good intentions,” Estes told Newsweek. “But, good intentions can’t right policy. So, the problem that we have here is that right now, good intentions are writing policy. We have, ‘here’s the idea,’ but what do we do once the money is brought forward? I don’t think people have thought though that as much.”

Was making a left turn this morning. Two left turn lanes, two lanes to turn into. I turned into my lane just fine, but the person in the car next to me decided he wanted to turn into my lane too. Swerved to avoid him, and I did, but I hit the curb. Hard. Didn’t damage the car, but my front passenger tire hit hard and now there’s, for lack of a better word, a small “hole” on the side (can see the metal tread). It’s on the side of the tire, right next to the “Goodyear” lettering.
Went to an auto shop and was told to buy rubber cement there to try and fix the tire, which I did (though it’ll take a couple of applications to fill). Currently drying. Tire’s only 3k miles old, so I’d rather not have to replace it if I don’t have to. Is that gonna be enough?

The division of streaming platforms is collectively pushing towards cable pricing. It’s starting to become a pain to track all the accounts you’ll have to sign up for. It would be nice to see a centralizing billing and distribution platform so you don’t have to track each app. Roku does pretty well with the distribution part, but you still have to manage each individual account.
How about no. We rationally moved from pirating to paid streaming because paid streaming was better than free. Iger seems to have (willingly) forgotten this. Everything I watch on Netflix I could pirate to stream or donwnload. Its worth $12 to have access to basically everything without having to deal with the interface problems of pirated streaming interfaces or management of data downloads.
The further from “basically everything” a service gets, he less a rational customer has shown interest in it.

I’ve been drifting back toward ad-supported content as my main watching. If I think a series or movie is good enough that I will watch it again years later, I will consider buying it if the price is right, but that winds up being one series every two or three years and maybe one or two movies. As I get older, that will probably end too and a one-time rental (true a la carte) will make more sense for me.
I’m thinking of dropping Netflix and just subscribing for the winter months, for example. Sample/binge in January and February and if anything strikes me as must see/must watch again TV then I’ll just buy the series – $50 for a series is three months of Netflix which I don’t watch much during the summer anyway. There’s enough “decent enough to pass the time” TV and movies in the ad-supported realm that spending money to take out the ads isn’t worth it because the quality of the shows/films isn’t worth spending the money to take the ads out. And in the on-demand-with-ads streaming world there’s no time slot pressures so the shows and films don’t get cut and edited, which for me has always been the main draw rather than the ad-free experience. Some things are so good I don’t ads messing it up, but 98% of the stuff really isn’t that good.
We may switch off of Netflix to Disney. Netflix is getting more expensive and the content is getting spottier by the month. I’m not sure we’re getting our $13 out of it. Disney, OTOH, would definitely be worth $7 considering our almost-2 year old.
The wildcard for us is Prime. We don’t use the video part a lot, but it pays for itself in other perks.
So far, the best investment has been our Tablo DVR that is hooked up to our antenna.

– Bosch – pretty solid seasons
– Jack Ryan – decent first season; they had a chance to humanize the bad guy but they veered off; the best villains are, in some measure, sympathetic. Still enjoyable.
My biggest issue with Jack Ryan is that the Ryan books are about cutting edge technology, a “wow, they can really do that?” kind of thing. You didn’t get that from this show, it was just your typical overblown terrorist plot. Well made, but kind of boring overall.
I never read the books, but my biggest beef was Jack Ryan is such a dull Mary Sue type character who is good at everything. He’s badly written and uninteresting.
The Patriot season 1 was phenomenal. Haven’t watched season 2.
We have a comprehensive package and swear to God, I haven’t watched broadcast television for months. Wifey changed the contract so I lost all of my go-to falling asleep in the Lazyboy stuff. She watches whatever and I check into youtube for less then an hour a day. Time to cut that cord.
We’re getting there. We were on the verge, with a DirecTV streaming subscription (+ our current Prime and Netflix), and then DirecTV jacked the rates so its not really much of a savings. Before they raised their rates, we would have saved $80/month.
Plus, sports. Until we can get streaming NFL and NASCAR, every game and race, Mrs. Dean ain’t going anywhere. Although she’s getting kinda squishy on the NFL. And if somebody in NASCAR doesn’t figure out how to beat Kyle Fucking Busch, she may lose interest there as well.
We’ve got the Apple TV gizmo hooked up the spare TV in the kitchen. Its pretty slick, once you get used to the different ergonomics/interface, and the way streaming works (you don’t look at a schedule, you look at shows), which takes some mental gearshifting.
Too complex! I’m old school. Nudge the kid in the back to change the channel old school.
It changes the way you think about what to watch. Not really “scroll and see what’s on or whats stacked up in the DVR”. More “I’m partway through X and could do another couple episodes” or “What’s recommended, anything look good” or “What’s this app got that I might like”.
NFL is a real sticking point for streaming, unfortunately. They just make too much money from the networks and DirecTV for them to take live streaming seriously.
If they would just sell all-you-can-eat streaming direct to consumes for ~$200 a season, they’d make a killing. As it is, they are too tied up to their old distribution model while NFL game streams get easier and easier to find every year if you go looking.
I thought I would like MLB.TV for that reason, but I wound up dropping it. Yeah it’s great that I can watch any game, but I can only watch one a day, maybe two at most. So I couldn’t eat all that much for $20 a month. For $5 a month there’s one game on ESPN+ every day and a free game on MLB.TV every day, I don’t get to choose any game but I don’t feel like I’m paying for a convenience I can rarely use.
I have heard that the NFL is thinking of doing direct streaming purchase of Sunday Ticket or whatever, rather than through a provider, so be patient. Their blackout rules may be crazy, though.
Hulu Live is in bed with the networks, so you get live NFL through there. And if you’re lucky enough to be able to get DirectTV as an app, you can get Sunday Ticket. That’s what we did this past season. Blackouts are still a bitch because we’re about ten miles west of what they believe is the edge of Redskins territory, but we still got most games we wanted.
Season 2 was just as good.

Cool. I don’t watch a lot of traditionally-programmed television any more, but if I get the itch I’ll check it out.

Disney at $7 a month would be absolutely clutch for our daughter. She’s turning 4 in June, and I find increasingly that the Disney animation channel is the best in terms of something she can watch herself without there being anything objectionable pop up. Amazon has a bunch of good stuff, too, but the problem there is that their “curated” kids material is about 30% decent with 60% dross and 10% borderline creepy. Plus, strangely, they route a lot of their “kid-friendly” web stuff to effing YouTube, which is a deal-breaker.
Amazon baffles me, mainly in the way they have broken their apps (Kindle, Prime TV, and Amazon). It used to be you could order video and books directly from the apps, but now you have to go to their website (or from the Amazon video app on a smart TV). Why do they make it such a pain for me to give them my money?
I have no inside knowledge, but the word on the street is that Bezos takes a very heavy hand in the way the user experience on Amazon products work. The way the Amazon main page is, no modern UI/UX designer would make it that way.
This may or may not be true. And it may or may not be a good idea – AB testing and the like usually is oversensative to overreactions that produce measurable interactions but can’t tell if they are because a user loves a change or hates it. If these design choices “make it such a pain for [you] to give them [your] money” but never make you feel like you’ve been tricked into a purchase, maybe your lifetime satisfaction and purchases stay high. No idea, but its a possibility.

I still think this is what peak UI performance looks like, so I try not to give my opinion on UI too often.

You should play Europa Universalis III, you’d love the interface.
We use it as an example of what not to do with a website, actually. The device apps like R C Dean says are even worse. I bought my daughter a Kindle Fire with a subscription to the kids service, which basically gives a semi-walled garden that lets you set various parental controls. It’s atrocious, and worst of all it foregrounds shitty freebie copyright-infringing shows without giving you a way to sort or filter and having a search bar that seldom actually works.
It’s tied with the Fire TV interface, which offers you exactly one way to look at shows: in a carousel, ordered by God-knows-what followed by the ordered in which they were last viewed or when they were purchased, depending. You can’t just get a list of movies you own in alphabetical order. It’s unbelievable.
I just checked the video and kindle apps on my phone and they had the option to buy directly in the app. Maybe you turned it off somehow?
On my phone, there’s no option to buy, just “Add to List”. I have Apple devices, so maybe its an Apple thing. *checks* Yup, its an Apple thing – they are strict on in-app purchases.
On my actual Kindle though, I’m pretty sure its the same way – I’ll have to check when I get home.
If you have kids, it’s going to be a good deal at $6.99. Just don’t expect that price to last very long.

I’m going to watch, and when it’s over I’ll forget about the entire thing. At this point I just need to finish it.
It’s visually stunning but when the two Mary-Sues started fucking it kind of lost its heart.
I enjoy it because I’m a nerd and because I think it actually does a pretty good job as an allegory for the politics of the tail-end of feudalism, but I’m right at the edge of my attention span. My neighbors have a flag for one of the Houses, and I’m already at the point where all the names just sound the same to me.
If I tried to explain the show to anyone it’d just be like “Well, there’s a bunch of people and they fight, and it’s basically England and the Golden Horde, but there’s also dragons and zombies, but nobody believes there are zombies, and there’s a bad family who runs England but everyone else wants to run England instead, except the chick with the dragons. Except I think now she kinda does because she’s banging this one guy’s cousin who was one of the good guys who mostly got killed by the bad guys who run the one main country. Or something, I don’t know.”
I haven’t started. I think Mrs. Dean and I are going to start at the beginning and see if she likes it. If not, it may be my “After Mrs. Dean Goes to Bed” watching. I’m kind of in a show hole right now for that slot, since finishing the Punisher/
