The new feature in the sky is Jupiter going retrograde. So government is going to be even worse — more incompetent and more abusive — than usual. Of course this is only temporary until *traces line with finger holds up ruler* Holy fuck, August 11? Well shit. This is another reason why less government is a good idea; it minimizes the effects of Jupiter Retrograde.
Jupiter Retrograde plays a part in this week’s alignments, being aligned with the Earth and the Moon yielding a nominal value of “disruptive misrule at home.” Unfortunately, this is also in a lunar resonance with a second alignment with Mercury and Venus. That secondary one ordinarily would mean a good chance for a random hookup, but in this case indicates that you are going to do something stupid and nookie will be withheld as a result. I hope your couch is comfortable.
Aries continues to be in the lead. The natural order is maintained, but nothing terribly special
Pisces, on the other hand, is having a surge rebound from the shitty month they had in March, with a particularly auspicious arrangement of Mercury and Venus. Yes, that same one as above, but in this context is leaning very heavily in the “short term interactions yield good results” direction.
Mars in Gemini continues the internecine strife.
The moon in Leo is not a terribly good sign. I mean it’s not bad, but there’s the whole fire/water conflict and whatnot. I think in this case, since it’s occurring during a time of Jupiter retrograde, it indicates a further undermining of leadership/authority.
If you’re a good person, this is bad; if you’re a bad person, this is good: Jupiter going retrograde in Sagittarius indicates that karma is going to miss its target. It also portends badly for my trip to the range.
This week’s card draw lead off with one with zodiacal symbols on it, indicating a particular accuracy for this week. Which is unfortunate.
Aries: 9 of Swords – Despair, grief, mourning.
Taurus: 7 of Coins, reversed – Anxiety about money
Gemini: 4 of Coins, reversed – Suspense, delay, opposition
Leo: Strength – Booya!
Virgo: King of Coins – Valor, realizing intelligence, success in mathematical and intellectual endeavors
Libra: 8 or Wands, reversed – Jealousy, quarrels, stingings of conscience.
Scorpio: The Hermit – Prudence, roguery, corruption, treason
Sagittarius: 9 of Coins, reversed – Roguery, deception, voided project, bad faith
Capricorn: The Moon – Hidden enemies, calumny, darkness, terror, deception, error
Aquarius: 5 of Swords – Degradation, dishonor, loss, infamy, destruction
Pisces: 2 of Wands, reversed – Surprise, emotion, fear, trouble
P.S. Cancer: Knight of Wands – Departure, absence, flight. A dark young man. Change of residence.
“Valor, realizing intelligence, success in mathematical and intellectual endeavors”
Can’t I just sleep instead?
Dude, you got one of the very few positive signs. Take advantage of it.
I’ll take what I can get
It works for me,
Sup Tres!
Hey YUFUS !
(tall cans in about 2 hours….)
I must say, whoever is doing the image/alt-text selection is really nailing it.
Agreed
Third. I love double entendres.
Good lord. Do I need to sober up for this?
That should never be a thing.
We have a horse race:
Molinari went in Ray’s Creek at 12
and now he Speithed himself on 15
Jason Day finding the water yesterday might have cost him the Green Jacket.
Day and Koeper have played tee to green better than the field, but that’s just half the game. We can go back and pick any two birdie putts that didn’t fall and call that the weekend for them.
True.
Tiger is in the lead through 15 although it is not over.
I saw a little of Tiger’s play on the TV this afternoon. Golf can still be an “old man’s” game.
Accuracy matters more than length in golf. Length in golf only matters in getting to the shorter clubs so the player can be more accurate.
STEVE SMITH LONG AND ACCURATE
Tiger drills 16.
Imagine being as capable as any of the younger competition, but having the confidence and muscle memory that playing the same hole a hundred time gives him. The others are playing in space; Tiger is playing in space and time: he knows where the planets should be. It’s like a gunfight where the youngsters stab for their holsters and fumble while the old pro slowly plugs everyone center-mass in turn (movie fantasy I know but more than a bit of truth in the ideal).
I believe it was Friday that one of the commentators was talking about how Tiger might not be the player he was when he played his first Masters, but he’s played the course so often that he knows it well. There aren’t any surprises for him there. The younger players don’t have that edge.
Knowing what matters: at work I laugh about how I feel like an old QB for whom the game has just slowed down. All those things that don’t matter because it’s not the main issue, no one cares, we’ll never get caught, the competition won’t do X anyway.
Imagine knowing the greens so well that you know what the best aimpoint is so that even a moderate miss leaves you in good stead, usually a makeable two-putt, often a birdie go.
So government is going to be even worse — more incompetent and more abusive — than usual.
I don’t see a difference.
It’s Sunday. They haven’t gotten started yet.
Ammo/ballistics guys (and dames):
Yesterday I tested the 65 and 90 grain versions of both the standard and +P loadings of this.
Because I didn’t feel like dropping a thousand bucks on getting enough data, the T-test didn’t find any difference (95 confidence interval) between any of those and my practice ammo at 7 yards.
Since shot placement seems to be a wash, I’m guessing I should get the 65 grain +P for my home defense pistol?
link trouble or just me?
my fault.
https://www.underwoodammo.com/collections/handgun-ammo/cartridge_9mm-luger+product-line_xtreme-defender
By placement I take you to mean off-hand, tactical postures, not benched? If so, is there any distinction in risk between them in, say, jamming potential?
If the placement data are from the bench, then I think you choose based on recovery: which gives you the best double-tap spread.
But otherwise yes: the round with the higher muzzle energy.
Yes, off-hand.
I don’t expect any jamming issues, as CZs have a reputation for being omnivorous. And frankly this stuff is way too expensive for me to dump a thousand of them to try and see.
I didn’t notice and recovery difference (again, limited testing) between the standard and the +P, but then again, the gun is fairly huge so I wouldn’t expect too much. The guy next to me with passive earpro said they were louder though.
My take: The Leigh Defense Xtreme-* bullets are designed for looking good when shooting jello. I’d only use a load with them if I would otherwise use FMJ, but want to limit penetration to 18″ or so.
Interesting. How does that differ from any other self-defense projectile?
I mean, outside of model testing, do we really have data on effectiveness?
Yes, we do.
The stretching and tearing of gelatin is not analogous to what happens in actual flesh. Specifically, the temporary stretch cavity that these kind of rounds (Leigh Xtreme, ARX, NovX, etc) demonstrate in gelatin does not occur in actual flesh. This is why I say they are meant to look good in jello.
“Shock” wounding from stretching is only significant at much higher (2000+ fps) velocities. Actual wounding from handgun-speed projectiles is from the amount of tissue destroyed – that is the actual diameter of the round.
Handgun rounds stop the target through blood loss, mechanical damage, or hits on the CNS. These are non-expanding bullets with a nice, sharp meplat, nothing more. The fact that they torque themselves out and stop after relatively limited penetration compared to a FMJ is nice, but not as good as expanding and reaching that same penetration.
Well put, which is exactly how I end up with 230gr .45 JHP: .66 to .72″ expansion is going a long way towards stopping threat. I don’t expect to hear “thank you sir may I have another”
9MM defense ammo testing
https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/#9mm
I picked three of the best performers from this list (not necessarily “the best”) and ran them through our guns. Note the manufacturer does not recommend +P.
Federal 124 gr HST
Sig Saur 124 gr V Crown
Speer 124 gr Gold Dots
Had feeding problems with both Federal HST and Sig V Crown. The Speer Gold Dots feed great, not perfect, but great.
Both Federal HST and Speer Gold Dots are available in “law enforcement” packaging. The rounds are not shiny and polished, but their specs are identical to the “personal defense” rounds. The primary difference is 40 cents per round instead of a buck or more per round.
That means we could actually afford to run more than a thousand rounds through six different pistols. (so 150+ rounds through each of six pistols)
The specs for Speer 124 Gold Dot is the same as American Eagle 124 FMJs. And there is no difference in feel or accuracy. I get exactly the same results at any range shooting Am Eagle 124s and Speer 124 Gold Dots.
So I buy Gold Dots a thousand-round case at a time. We have about 800 in the house right now. We shoot with them about once per quarter.
Good info. You using compacts? federal now has a Micro HST that might feed better. Sounds like the Gold Dots are working for you though
Springfield 1911 EMP 4
Springfield 1911 EMP
Sig Saur p938
The gold dots work will in all three pistols.
Short-barrel 1911s are known for having feed problems with hollow points. The EMPs and the p938 are built for 9mm and experience far fewer problems. But they are still picky on which JHPs they will run. (in my limited experience)
I should point out that I have 2000+ FMJ rounds through the EMP4 and a 1000+ FMJ rounds through both the EMP and p938 without a single failure.
The issue with JHP is when the feed ramp is dirty. The JHPs want to dig into the dirt and jam up. The Gold Dots have a
rounder edge than the HSTs or V-Crowns, so they slide over the dirt a little better.
Oh yeah, I’ve had a Colt Officers Special for 25 years so I’m well used to that:)
I carry JHP, so this in .45
Expect .66 to .72″ expansion with similar energy to those 9 +P
Interesting Ballistics video I found the other day. Lucky Gunner has some great ballistics info for various defense ammo on their site. Unfortunately, they haven’t tested the Underwood yet. I have a box of the 90gr +P but haven’t shot it yet.
https://youtu.be/T6kUvi72s0Y
I might be concerned about penetration for such a light bullet with the 65gr. I’m sure it has more velocity, just not sure about the weight. Might see if you can find some ballistic gel testing on that. I might lean towards the 90gr actually just because of that. Sounds like your running a full-size barrel so may be ok with the lighter bullet.
The web site you linked to said penetration of 16″ which is perfect assuming tested with FBI calibrated ballistics gel and standard pistol barrel length.
https://www.sgammo.com/product/federal-ammo-sale/50-round-box-9mm-luger-p-federal-hst-124-grain-hp-hollow-point-le-ammo-p9h
???
This is my recommendation.
That’s actually what I have now.
no objection, your honor
Excellent choice
I’d go with that. HST or Speer Gold Dot.
Looks like even the standard load 65gr has adequate penetration even after two sheets of drywall. Don’t see any expansion though.
1:00 mark

Bigger, heavier bullets are better. Full stop.
Sunday afternoon.
Obligatory.
It’s still Sunday morning here for another 10 minutes.
A feature in the sky?
How about a waitress?
Thanks a lot, stupid stars.
I didn’t realize astrology was so sciencey.
Actually, the one on the left made me think this was going to be a House of Quality discussion.
Today: We don’t have time for that Quality bullshit. Just ram the Authorization for Expenditure through, and you can fill out your bullshit paperwork later.
Tomorrow: What do you mean we need another $13M and six months to fix something that was in the spec all along!!!!???!!1!11!?
Because I didn’t feel like dropping a thousand bucks on getting enough data, the T-test didn’t find any difference (95 confidence interval) between any of those and my practice ammo at 7 yards.
Go round up some bums and put vests on them (or not).
That’s pretty dark, even for here.
Well, he said to put vests on them.
If I can’t afford enough ammo to get sufficient data, how do you think I’ll be able to afford that many vests?
They aren’t that expensive
Pshaw! Those don’t have gridlines to measure groupings!
It’s not really bum season yet.
“Libra: 8 or Wands, reversed – Jealousy, quarrels, stingings of conscience.”
Looks like a week full of day drinking.
No women no problems.
Roguery, deception, voided project, bad faith
Is that what I’m supposed to *do*, or what I’m supposed to be watching out for? This is all so confusing.
I mean, I can take the money and then not do the work. That’s a piece of cake. Anybody can do that.
Sounds like another day in court.

If my preconceived notions based on stereotypes are correct, you might actually be able to power a Montana town with windmills.
Great Falls definitely.
Take that, Trump!
Lol
We stopped for groceries at the IGA in Dillon a couple of weeks ago. 12-15 items on the belt after checkout. “You want a bag?” Naw, I’ll just gather up all my crap and cradle it in my arms. Of course I want a bag. The clerk put my goods in the first paper bag I’ve seen in years.
We use plastic shopping bags as litter bags when traveling. The paper sack didn’t work nearly as well.
I use them as cat litter and recycling bags at home. Starting next year I’ll have to buy bags for shopping, litter, and recycling. To heal the earth.
YES to all of that. I hate the question and I hate the paper sacks that I can’t use as garbage bags.
Missoula Commits to 100 Percent Clean, Renewable Electricity, Becomes First in Montana with Goal
Next on the agenda, a mascot change; from “Grizzlies” to “Pixies”.
Don’t mock ’em Brooks. This will make Bozoners feeling left behind and they’ll have to catch Missoula up and then some.
“Bobcats” become…. Too easy.
If my preconceived notions based on stereotypes are correct, you might actually be able to power a Montana town with windmills.
That’s if you can keep them from getting blown down.
Worst winds were in Wyoming for us. From Montana to Colorado the highway signs were proclaiming “40MPH+ gusts”.
A bit of ammo (or anything) math since the thread has slowed down. A rule of thumb I scratched out once goes something like this:
Shoot four rounds, measure the spread on centers, then double it to get a cheap estimate of spread for all rounds.
What about Cancer?
Sorry, got left out.
Cancer: Knight of Wands – Departure, absence, flight. A dark young man. Change of residence.
And thanks to the content edit fairy!
Well, so far I can vouch for the Leo bit. I’ve been pulling out old steel posts from the previous owner’s chain link fence. A hell of a lot of ivy is coming along with the fencing, too, which is nice. Between the allergies and the sore muscles tomorrow’s gonna be a bear, but it feels good to be out in the yard again.
Tiger drills it on 17. Just wow. 15 years, eight surgeries, a lost two years for being a douchebag and now at 43 he’s showing the kids how it’s done.
This is terrific. I watched the second half yesterday and started today at I believe 6. Not even a golf fan, but this is a good one!
Oh, and:
Leo: Strength – Booya!
Fuck yeah.
I’m having more fun watching the Islanders wipe the rink with the Penguins – again.
Holy shit! They’re gonna sweep!
Soon.
He has done it.
“eight surgeries” ???
Lenin, doing what Lenins do.
If Assange really is responsible for leaking the photo then he is an idiot. It was really clever when Elvis Costello sang,”I want to beat the hand that feeds me.”. For a politcal refugee it’s suicide.
Well, Assange isn’t going to Chelsea, so there’s that.
Maybe he’ll get the same cell as Chelsea, and turn it into a reality TV show.
I don’t want to go to Chelsea.
I’ll believe Lenin’s accusation when he furnishes proof.
The impression I got from Assange is that he really is that arrogant. That level of arrogance can help people do great things — see Steve Jobs — but it usually comes with a few draw backs such as biting the hand that feeds you and expecting no blowback.
It’s actually quite entertaining.
*Grabs popcorn*
“The image shows Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno in a gray t-shirt, smiling as he reclines in a luxury hotel bed with a large platter of lobster. The picture caused uproar in the South American country since it shows the president taking it easy as austerity measures were imposed on his people.”
He’s the President. How did they think he was going to live?
If Kinnath is out there, I just racked my raspberry mead for the second time. SP is .999, pretty much what it was three weeks ago. Very fine layer of sediment and the flavor is really starting to come together.
I just wandered in.
Sounds like it is progressing well. You can help it clear up by cold-crashing it. Put it in the fridge and let it set there for a couple of days. Then take it back out. This will help the mead clear up.
Still three more weeks before bottling?
Bottle when it is clear. A couple more weeks should do it.
Did you say you were going to bottle condition for a dry sparkling product? I don’t remember.
Yes. This is going to be a great sip on a hot afternoon.
Ok. So cold crash it for a couple of days in the fridge. Then give it a week or two to clear up. Then you can bottle and condition. Should be awesome by summer time.
Song for the first pour.
Calumny?
Really?
Surely this is a hanging offense.

If he was hung, would he need pr0n?
Oh come on. HS maybe – college? BS.
That has to be BS. Who would buy porn, especially in person?
“Charlie says his parents told him that they destroyed the entire collection. A collection that consisted of over 12 moving boxes full of movies.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office was eventually called about the destroyed items. Charlie filed a police report estimating the value of his collection to be $28,940.72.”
Wow.
The Japanese contingent of Glibs should plan a high brow field trip to this new art exhibit.
I like the way that True Art can be tarted up as some wonderful thing, instead of “a bunch of pics of the thighs of hot Japanese gals”
But…they all have their knees together.

They’d just have to pixellate it.

Another brisket on the smoker. It was too nive a day here in Vegas to not be outside with a beer and the smell of hickory smoke.

Thinking of watching the hockey game tonight but Vegas fans are such a pain to be around. Hoping the Sharks dont do what the Sharks do best in the playoffs and fail to beat them so this town learns some true hockey fan pains.
The new expansion draft rules help a lot. Don’t worry – the Knights will disappoint eventually!
Nice team though…
Yeah and I will say their organization did an awesome job promoting within the city
HEY YUFUS !
I learned today that Ione Skye is Donovan’s daughter. I don’t think I can look at her the same way now.
Why?
This is fucking great!
How do I know?
Because these guys covered it.
Have another cover
(not Donovan tho’)
https://youtu.be/leI7sfmipuI
That’s my favorite Donovan song. It’s great to get a history lesson while you are enjoying the music.
I hope you’re not admiring her acting abilities.
TIL that Donovan is still alive. That’s a bar bet I would have lost.
Tundra – re: the scales book I rec’d for your daughter. I thought it actually had a lot more tablature vs. traditional musical staff notation. (This would make sense, since guitars are usually in E against pianos in C). Also, I used to be able to read music much better 35 years ago, so it wasn’t such an impediment when I first came across it. The book is full of good music theory, but after re-ordering it, I can see how it wouldn’t be nearly as useful to someone who doesn’t read music. It does have all the modes in tablature, though, so not a total washout in any case.
To sum up: sorry if that was a dud suggestion. If she actually wants to learn to read music, visuals like this might help.
Hey, BP. She reads music beautifully. It’s me that has to get up to speed!
Not a dud at all!
‘ It’s me that has to get up to speed!’
I know the feeling (Believe me, I know the feeling). Good to hear it’s not an issue. That book has a trove of info, and I remember playing the exotic scales at the end of the book, and thinking “oh, okay, that’s why Indian or Japanese or Klezmer music always has a recognizable sound.”
Best wishes for her (and you) on her journey. (the trip, not the band).
Here’s something I’ve always wondered about musical theory (and I guess culture as well):
When you listen to klezmer, Ukrainian, Russian, or other Eastern European music, it seems to have a lot more minor chords than Anglo-American music or even Western European. A lot more of it seems to conjure up a sad, mournful mood.
Do those cultures just listen to more sad music, or do they have a different perception of what sad music is? e.g. Is this considered a sad or happy song?
The film I’m Gonna Git You Sucka is so fucking stupid…I love it.
It is a shame when a young man dies of an OG

This? It’s my theme music.

My Bitch Better Have My Money
That movie was recommended around my grade/middle school when I was a kid. So you had all these white suburban kids quoting the lines from the movie until we all went to high school.
