Good morning my Glibs and Gliberinas! And what a glorious morning it is for everyone except those living in Yuma. Not due to the state of emergency they had to declare over illegals, it is just an overall shithole.

Good Morning, Banjos!!!
Mornin’
Man posing as a deliveryman tries to assassinate a woman with a crossbow he hid behind a giant box.
It’s time to ban crossbows, large cardboard boxes, and home delivery.
And men?
At least you didn’t demand they also ban men….

No one needs a high-capacity assault crossbow. It’s time to get these dangerous weapons of war off of our streets.
Funnily enough, High capacity crossbows are less accurate and have shorter range than single shot crossbows.

“UVa students asks Beto why he gives so little in charity.”
Same reason most other team blue people do: they want to “do good” (in quotes because what they really are after is their own power) with other people’s money. Not their own ever.
No, it is just that individual charity is pointless and does not help, you need organized redistribution by government or else it is in vain
Especially when the goal is to generate a dependent voter base – with the same rights & functions as serfs or slaves used to have, but which nobody should ever tell that is what they have become – and to punish the entities you don’t like and lavish rewards on the ones you do (as long as they then turn around and put a large chunk of that cash in your campaign coffers or bank).
It ain’t charity if you boast about it.
It aint charity if your forced to do it.
As Grandpa Gulag responded, ‘I give what I give’. All he needed to add was ‘fuck you’.
For them, the calculus of what constitutes ‘compassion’ runs through the state thus freeing them of any responsibility.
Stripped agency.
Must be a miserable way to exist if you ask me.
I’ve always had the thought that people who believe in government solving the problems of the nation / world see their taxes as their contribution to the betterment of society.
Yep. The true believers really mean it when they say that citizens have a responsibility to contribute their “fair share” in taxes and that it should go to things like education and health care for everyone, parks, bike lanes, whatever. Basically, everybody pools their money and the government is in charge of spending it to provide everyone with their basic needs plus those things which are considered beneficial to society, like libraries, playgrounds, public transportation, etc. So paying taxes is a moral duty; it’s not heroic, like saving a kitten from a burning building, more like a combination of civic responsibility and personal charity. Like mowing your own lawn and then getting the strip by the sidewalk for the old lady who lives next door.
But wouldn’t it say more about a society if its citizens were not *forced* to do these things? If certain ideas were truly communally beneficial, wouldn’t people willingly contribute to achieve them?
Shouldn’t a liberal be concerned about the legitimacy of their philosophies if citizens must be coerced into enacting them? Is their system really rooted in beneficence, as they believe, if it depends on violence?
/rehtorical… things I ask progs when they present your arguments.
Of course, but the argument is usually something like government has the expertise and authority to organize “charity” in the most effective and efficient ways and is going to be free of any type of bias in the distribution of benefits. Fair, in other words. Funny how “fairness” comes up so often when they really mean “equal”, which isn’t remotely the same thing.
It shows you what their opinion of others is. They NEED to be coerced because they are fallen from grace.
Speaking of compassion….
Minnesoda nonprofit wages finally keep up with govt wages.
A real journalist would filter that data to exclude the low level semi-volunteers from the numbers so that we could see how lucrative it is to be an executive of a non-profit.
*EDIT FAIRY HALP YA!*
Is there a nonprofit out there to help spazzes who can’t close anchor tags?
nonprofit edit faeries are the bomb!!!
“Non-profits” should not have a separate tax status from for-profits if they pay anyone who works for them. You’re either a volunteer organization or you’re a company.
But then I wonder how you could deal with the “administrative services company” that immediately crops up and is hired by the nonprofit to do “back office functions”
Nonprofit employee wages are on pace with government wages in Minnesota for the first time — indicating that a sector long staffed by people expected to live on little pay while doing good has grown increasingly competitive with other industries.
In other words, the employees believe in for-profit work.
There are a bunch of nonprofits in the sector in which I work, and while most of them really do pay their employees a pittance–which, to be totally fair, is expected within these particular circles–there are a few that are obviously gaming the shit out of the system. The expectation is mostly that when you work for one of these groups you’re doing it because you believe in the mission and any salary is basically just enough to keep you in a position where you can keep doing the work. But there’s one that pays its management a pretty fair bit of change and does stuff like buy islands for “educational” use and then host parties on them.
Well he was dumb to release his returns.

At least the Iguana was okay. Those are more Floridian animals than Ohioan.
Its dorsal spikes are oddly bent, they ought to be pretty much vertical. A lot of times that comes from not being able to shed the skin covering them. They’ll shed all their skin except for on the spikes, and layers of the old skin can build up and cause them to be stunted or bent. When we had our iguana, we occasionally had to rub some baby oil onto the spikes to loosen up the old skin and get it off.
Wait, you meant it literally when you said you were “Oiling your Iguana”?
Maybe.

My “lizard” or “iguana tail”, if you know what I mean, tends to be in my pants….
The thing isn’t called a trouser lizard by accident.
Now we know what happened to Mr Lizard!
I can neither deny or confirm that it is in my pants….
There’s a few “post – hours” bars in our area. They can stay open later than other bars, or open earlier. Some are open at 7am. So the third shifters can leave work, drive to the bar and get a drink on, then go home just like the 9-5ers.
There used to be a bunch of those in Cocoa Beach, back during the Apollo program when kennedy space center had third shifts. I remember the ABC Lounge in cape canaveral used to have a 7 am happy hour.
Ironic that the iguana named Copper had the cops called to his outing.
Unfortunately for irony’s sake, it was the cops themselves who named the iguana “Copper”. I’m assuming because the humane society people they gave it to asked what it’s name was, because why else would you take it upon yourself to name an animal that was just going to be in your custody for a short time?
Was his iguana overcooked?

diabetes? say what now?
Correlation fallacy.
Fat people tend to develop diabetes more.
Fat people alos tend to eat more of, well, everything.
Since they eat more red meat, you get this corelation spike between high levels of red meat consumption and diabetes due to a secondary factor (Obesity)
The obesity also covers the strokes and heart disease. Not 100% on the effects of weight on cancer rates.
USC – I meant to mention this to you in your PC build.
I had a very high quality, but old specification PSU that bit me rather hard when I built my new PC with it. When the demand on the 12V rail dropped to near nothing (i.e. low usage) it would randomly freeze the PC.
I found out the hard way that some of the low power CPU states don’t play nicely with older PSUs. It took me about 2 weeks to figure out and put in a modern PSU.

Considering some of the crap we are finding out went down, I wonder how this guy said this shit with a straight face….
Trashy,
I came back too late to reply yesterday to the conversation regarding traditions and antiquities, and I don’t want to belabor the point, but I thought it was actually an interesting topic and enjoyed hearing what you had to say so I wanted to respond briefly.
1) I never meant to suggest that tradition itself should be discarded, only that the material tokens thereof don’t necessarily deserve reverence – objects are objects, IMO. Ideas are of a whole other character. That said, I don’t really lament losing traditions rooted in nonsense either. There was ancient wisdom along with ancient foolishness.
2) While I agree with your point and the substance of the Chesterton quote, I still don’t think they can fully address the incongruity between a reverence for tradition and reverence for an age whose entire raison d’être was the discarding of tradition. Culminating naturally as it did with the Reign of Terror in France, I’d contend the Enlightenment is the prototypical example of having too hastily discarded tradition for progress. 300 years after the fact, our received traditions now are precisely those of the Enlightenment, and taking a precautionary principle approach to them is, at the very least, drenched in irony.
Culminating naturally as it did with the Reign of Terror in France, I’d contend the Enlightenment is the prototypical example of having too hastily discarded tradition for progress.
That’s a good point as to why I shouldn’t hang my banner fully on the Enlightenment. Every movement has its excesses, and the enlightenment was only good insofar as it addressed and remedied the excesses of the past.
For example, I’m not a pure individualist. I believe that families and (voluntary) communities have some rights in a societal context, too. To me, the individualism of the enlightenment was an overreaction.
I also agree that objects are objects, but as you mentioned yesterday, there’s a part of everybody that feels a twinge when a beautiful old building goes away. Is that twinge just irrational egoism wrapped up in nostalgia, or is there something more to it? I lean towards the latter.
Finally, before I make this an essay:
I think this was the whole point of the Chesterton quote. It’s very easy for one person, or even an entire society to label something as nonsense. Heck, we often fall into the trap of thinking that we’re the first enlightened generation and everybody before us were ignorant primitives. Chesterton encountered that belief acutely. The budding “planning” movement in the late 19th century threw out everything traditional as nonsense, and started from square one. Of course, all of the horrors of the first half of the 20th century sprung from that movement, as predicted by the traditionalists like Chesterton.
If you were to catch me in a particularly contrarian or argumentative mood, I’d defend the contention that the Enlightenment contained within it the philosophical seeds of Marx that sparked off the 20th century’s atrocities, and in that respect probably made humanity worse off than it would have been otherwise. So in that sense I’m pretty traditionalist. I do respect received wisdom. But not enough that I’m content to accept received error along with it rather than risk the consequences of change. So in that sense I’m less traditionalist. As a practical matter, I think modernity is shit and adapting to the pace of change since the loss of religion and family as primary institutions of social organization isn’t going all that well.
You Don’t Know Marx: Part II
well he’s got us there! much more derp inside the fold.
With the people selling this evil shit it is always a shell game. Why can’t they just fucking admit that they are lazy and inept, but envy of the success of others and the fact said success pays off, motivates them to fuck over all others?
oops… should have been some … marks after the first paragraph indicating I’m parsing through the article. It’s a long bit of tripe.
I somehow see a large gap in logic – in the jump from “probability that someone will be harmed…” to “therefore, governments have the right to enact gun control laws. . . ” You see, the gov’t only has that right if _we_ give it to them.
HERETIC!
Don’t you know government is the new god? The all powerful and only benevelont entity that fights against the evuls perpetrated by the satanic private sector?
Right. One could more simply conclude that as soon as one person on the island has a gun, everyone else has the right to own one to defend his/her self. Why add the complication of a third party, of a government?
Because with these fucks it is always about government picking the winners & losers. Control. Nothing but.
As soon as I seen UMass plus the headline all I could think of was this. I guess some things never change.
Imagine an island where no one has a penis. The probability that someone on that island is raped is zero. Now, someone moves to the island and brings a penis with them. Now the probability that someone could be raped is greater than zero. This thought experiment proves that penises inherently cause harm. In philosophy, an increase in the probability that someone will be harmed is considered itself a harm. Therefore, governments have the right to enact castration laws. However, the question of how governments should exercise this right, if they choose to do so at all, is unanswered.
I believe Zardoz has a plan…
ZARDOZ SPEAKS TO YOU, HIS CHOSEN PLAN OBSERVING ONE. YES, ZARDOZ HAS GIVEN THE GIFT OF THE GUN TO THE BRUTAL EXTERMINATORS AND INSTRUCTED THEM TO GO FORTH AND KILL. THIS MAY TAKE SOME TIME TO FINISH. ZARDOZ HAS SPOKEN.

“I really like the approach of John Rawls, a philosopher who made a career analyzing justice and fairness. He said that all social systems should be set up to be fair, where social systems refer to the economics, law, family structure, culture, artistic expression, etc.”
Naturally he would like Rawls.
When I read some Rawls back in college, he creeped me out.
I am not familiar with him, but I’d guess his idea of “fair” is not the same as my idea of fair.
My idea of fair is I keep what I earn, you keep what you earn, and we hang thieves.
How do I get to virtue signal how marxistly woke I am in a system like that, huh?
/progtard
Imagine an island where no one owns a gun. The probability that someone on that island is shot is zero. Now, someone moves to the island and brings a gun with them. Now the probability that someone could be shot is greater than zero. This thought experiment proves that gun ownership inherently causes harm.
Imagine an island where there are no women. The probability for prostitution (with a woman) is zero. Now move a woman onto the island. The probability for prostitution is now greater than zero. This thought experiment proves women inherently cause harm.
Imagine an island where there are no transgender. The probability of someone being cut is zero. Now move a knife onto the island. The probability for cuts is now greater than zero. This thought experiment proves knives inherently cause harm. Government must intervene with common sense transgender control.
Imagine an island where there are no knives. The probability for cuts is zero. Now move a knife (say by ACME Imports who had connections with local officials) onto the island. The probability for cuts is now greater than zero. This thought experiment proves knives inherently cause harm. So find another way to cut that cantaloupe.
Imagine an island where no one owns a gun. The probability that someone on that island is shot is zero. Now, someone moves to the island and brings a gun with them. Now the probability that someone could be shot is greater than zero. This thought experiment proves that gun ownership inherently causes harm.
Keep moving those goal posts. Getting shot is not same as being harmed. Yes, it harms you to get shot, but getting shot isn’t the only way you can be harmed. In absence of firearms on fantasy island, he with the strongest biceps reigns. You’d think no murders or violence ever occurred in human history prior to inventing firearms if you listen to these people.
Also, lack of guns = patriarchal oppression. How can the womyn hope to stave off über-rapists without a force equalizer?
governments have the right
No, they don’t. Governments have power and authority. The US government and those of the several states are granted certain authorities. Incidentally they are expressly prohibited from arms regulation, thought they do it anyway because they have the power to. Either way, your thought experiment has a flawed premise.
I guess this guy has never heard of the dictatorship of the proletariat? Marxist communism is a totalitarian system, both in theory and practice. It’s also FAR more than just an “economic system.” It’s a socioeconomic system that covers almost every aspect of life.
Why did American politicians during the Cold War raise perfectly valid objections to totalitarianism, which is a political system, while claiming that they were criticizing communism, which is an economic system?
Perhaps because communism is an economic system that requires totalitarianism to function. You cannot take from each according to his ability without total control. Small scale voluntary communism (like on a commune) is the only communism that even can be voluntary, trying to scale it up to a wider system necessarily requires forcing people to submit against their will. People who want the whole economy to operate on communist principles are totalitarians.

Who are you, Pope Innocent II?
So, I’ve noticed that a lot of people (not here) are complaining about the money being donated for cathedral restoration when there are homeless in US and France, poor rural churches in Louisiana that still haven’t been rebuilt after latest hurricane, and of course the water in Flint, Michigan. “See, rich white men could solve the world’s problems if they wanted to.”
Fair enough up to a point, but the naïve do-gooders are, as always, being led by the grifters.
I WANT TO TELL YOU WHAT YOU SHOULD DO WITH YOUR MONEY!
/progtard
I mean, considering how much wealth is owned by the Catholic church I’d think they could pretty well afford to fix their own cathedral, but who am I to tell anybody what to do with their money?
I don’t think they guys in Rome are friendly with the ones in Paris.
I don’t think the guys in Rome are friendly with anyone else in the Church. *sighs and drinks in tired catholic*
Apparently the cathedral is actually owned by the government of France. And given the fungibility of money, these people are in effect making a big donation to the government of France.
But, yes, that’s an excellent point about the Church as a whole. Particularly the Vatican. We will never know how much they have in Swiss (sorry) bank accounts.
That figures. I’d still think it appropriate for the church to kick down for at least a big part of the restoration, given the iconic status of the building and the mountain of cash at their disposal. Considering the state of modern France though, It’s probably more appropriate that it be rebuilt by secular money.
” We will never know how much they have.”
It’s also none of our business.
It was absolutely my business when I was a parishioner.
Was the cathedral not insured? I am sure private entities are forced by frog law to have insurance, so why not property owned by the state, huh?
They self-insure their properties. In other words, no.
Most governments are self-insuring, particularly the sovereign ones. And had it been insured, there would have been a fire suppression system of some sort.
So one rule for the plebes and non for them, again?
Meh. Think it through, Alex. Would you as an insurer insure a sovereign entity that controlled the laws and courts, ie one that could decide that your denial of that entity’s claim was illegal.
I WILL PASS A LAW TO FORCE YOU TO ACCEPT IT!
/nanny state
Put the homeless to work moving stones. And the orphans.
It’s almost like people are still acting in their own interest even when they’re being charitable.
Why would you give any form of charity to something you didn’t believe in? Even the political class knows this…
So what they’re saying is rich white men should be in charge of everything.
…when there are homeless in US and France, poor rural churches in Louisiana that still haven’t been rebuilt after latest hurricane, and of course the water in Flint, Michigan…
The only part of this complaint that really has merit would be the rural churches (assuming they’re Catholic, since I’m assuming the Notre Dame donors have an affinity for Catholicism). There will always be homeless, no matter what you do, so it’s silly to say you shouldn’t donate to another cause before fixing an intractable problem. And the Flint fiasco was entirely self-inflicted, so they are in no way deserving of charity (if you want to help them out, that’s nice, but they don’t get to be on a list of “you should solve this first”). Ultimately people donate to what they care about, and no one can care about everything, so it is perfectly acceptable for people to donate to something they care about that other people might not.

NYC’s Museum of Natural History Expels Brazil Gala Honoring ‘Fascist’ Bolsonaro
I found this gem on twitter:
Well, I won’t ever be setting foot in that museum.
It’s a shame. We go there every time we’re in NY to visit my relatives. The kids love the dinosaur exhibits. Hope they file away the memories because I’ll never go there again.

Why Andrea Dworkin is the radical, visionary feminist we need in our terrible times
Her central theory is that the right exploits women’s fear and offers us a chivalrous protection.
“Hey, marry the guy you fuck so you don’t have to raise your kid by yourself” is oppressive. “Hey, mortgage your soul to the welfare state so you can raise your kid by yourself” is empowerment.
Unfortunately, logic has never been this demographic’s strong suit….
Feminism destroyed the essence and soul of women.
It’s more about trying to measure up or be equal to men.
It’s bound to be a downer for many women who buy into that misleading path.

[Obama] joked to the evening’s host Stephen Colbert that — like choosing to live with a divorced dad — the choice to elect Trump may initially have seemed appealing but quickly turned sour.
‘We [America] come from a broken family, we are a little unsettled. Sometimes you spend the weekend with divorced dad. That feels like fun but then you get sick. That is what America is going through. We are living with divorced dad.’
More like the fun, quirky uncle. But everyone knows divorced dads are deplorable.
>> may initially have seemed appealing
I wonder why that happened, Mr. Lightbringer. Real mystery there.
I can’t wait for the lot of them to be wearing orange jump suits while the orange man laughs at them.
I hated that joke so damn much. I love my dad and spending every Sunday with him and the grandparents were some of my best and brightest memories of childhood.
The bravery of taking shots at people who get fucked by the courts. So brave.
That’s a stellar source of comedy in a country with a 50% divorce rate.
I keep hearing that statistic, and it always makes me ask “Is the rate so high because the same people keep getting divorced and remarried over and over again?” Or is the statistic just inaccurate?
IIRC, remarriages and the proliferation of unmarried cohabitation both have contributed to the stat, which is possibly only apocryphal anyway. Still, the divorce rate is high and blended families are common. Trashing divorced dads might not be an especially smart move. Particularly as a black man.
According to these people the stats are bad. Most of the divorce rate is due to serial monogamists. They put the number for first marriages around 30%.
Anecdotally, this is my wife’s second marriage and my first.
Plus, couples that would have, in say 1910, gotten married then divorced are now more likely to never get married, which depresses the divorce rate in 2019 compared to 1919.
He’s such a fucken smart-alec dickhead.
Colbert is pathetic.
She’s.
So, what’s the over-under on how long until someone’s selling “Divorced Dad’s for Trump” paraphernalia?

The goof has raised $830K so far from her supporters. The only good news is that her fellow Dems may not want to take money from her because of her toxicity to sane voters.
Half a million alone came in an envelope with “Trump” stamped on the back.
She also has a quarter million dollar book deal, which I’m sure she’ll split with the poor.

Last December our new gov-elect was lauded for “snubbing” Trump.
On Monday, our Gov went hat in hand for a 20 minute meeting to plead for disaster relief funds (for spring flooding).
Give the man credit for knowing that Trump reads the papers and is vindictive enough that if he said anything too snide, the chances of getting that Fed money would be gone.

Panic attack
More than a dozen school districts in Colorado are closed Wednesday after the FBI and local law enforcement warned of an 18-year-old white woman who is “armed and dangerous” in the Denver metropolitan area.
Sol Pais flew from Miami to Denver on Monday and “immediately” bought a pump action shotgun and ammunition, FBI Denver Special Agent In Charge Dean Phillips told reporters Tuesday evening.
Pais had “made some concerning comments in the past” and had an “infatuation” with the 1999 Columbine High School shooting and its perpetrators, Phillips said at the press conference. She was last seen in the foothills of Jefferson County, in the metro Denver area.
————
Phillips said law enforcement had no specific information about a threat to any one particular school, but they thought it was a “credible threat certainly to the community and potentially to schools.”
————-
Pais had not been charged with a crime as of Tuesday evening, Phillips told reporters. Phillips said the FBI was working with federal prosecutors and local authorities were working with local prosecutors to bring charges against Pais.
As of now, if Pais were found immediately, “we will certainly hold her for as long as we can legally,” Phillips said.
At least they got that red flag law passed.
I don’t even know what to think about stuff like this, other than to say I am highly suspicious of anybody who wants to “stop something before it happens” by denying rights to people who may or may not just be half a bubble off plumb.
I’m curious as to what credible evidence they have? Is hearsay considered credible?
She probably posted something on Facebook, and after MSD they have to assume every Facebook post is credible?
Love how they raided her home in Florida without any charges or warrants, shut down all the schools without any idea what she’s doing in Colorado, and intend to detain her as long as they can get away with doing so even though no crime has been committed.
Similar MO to how they’ve treated Trump. (S)HE MUST BE GUILTY OF SOMETHING! Unleash all the power of the state on her until we find something!
“(S)HE MUST BE GUILTY OF SOMETHING! Unleash all the power of the state on her until we find something!”
This is pretty much the story of the human race.
+3 felonies a day
Such a brave new progressive world.
If they want to take precautions, that’s one thing. But if this, “federal prosecutors and local authorities were working with local prosecutors to bring charges against Pais” turns into some bullshit look-we-did-something photo/media op, that’s another thing entirely.
So, to be absolutely clear, she has done nothing even remotely illegal, right? I mean, if I decided I wanted to go check Colorado out and do some clay shooting while I was out there, this could be me. Hell, or my wife, who watches and reads “true crime” stuff like Serial and Discovery ID constantly. God knows we’ve both said some shit online that someone in the FBI might find concerning, for a given value of concerning.
Bingo
I can easily see myself heading to visit the in-laws this summer in Texas, going on an Academy trip, and picking up a shotgun or like a Ruger 10/22 to fool around with down there. And apparently getting the whole damn state shut down while a manhunt is conducted.
Also, this is suspicious as all hell. First, she looks 28 minimum, not 18. Second, there are no charges against her and she isn’t wanted for anything in particular, yet there’s a national manhunt for her. Third, there’s a nation-wide manhunt for a teenager who flew to Denver and bought a shotgun at what I’m guessing is like a Wal-Mart or a Bass Pro or something. They have pictures of her and they know enough about her to know that she bought a gun and ammo and they know enough about her to believe that she’s a threat to…something or someone, apparently, but they can’t find her in the Denver metro?
Supposedly authorities believe she’s on the west side of the Denver metro area, in the foothills. She’s from Miami. She’ll freeze her ass off tonight.
At least my kid got a day off from school.
I’d think if there were charges to be brought, there’d be a warrant. Right now they’re just “looking” for her.
With that much CYA going on, I wonder if someone slipped their FBI undercover agent leash and went rogue?
“Doh! The crazy didn’t show up to the sting meeting where we were going to arrest her! This is going to be another Las Vegas shit show.”

Trump vetoes the antiYemen war bill…
https://townhall.com/tipsheet/bethbaumann/2019/04/16/breaking-trump-vetoed-bill-to-pull-us-troops-from-yemen-n2544901
Yep, he talks a good game but in the end he sucks like all the rest.
Do we have troops in Yemen?
Who the hell really knows (although I’d guess yes, at least a few)? I think the resolution was actually to end our support of the Saudis in their endeavor so the wording of the headline is incorrect. This one’s more accurate:
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/04/trump-vetoes-measure-involvement-yemen-war-190416234815258.html
There’s a material difference between “Get our boots off the ground” and “stop aiding the Saudis” I’m disappointed in whoever wrote that headline.
The first one’s a conservative outlet and the thought of the bill dissing the troops would make Trump’s veto more palatable so I’d bet it was a conscious mistake.
No. We have provided logistical support to the Saudis, though.
Did we at least get paid for it? We shouldn’t give away our expertise and loan out our hardware for free. I mean, the Saudis have plenty of money and are adjacent to Yemen anyway. Send them an invoice.
We’re both kind of right: apparently we have a very limited number of troops in Yemen helping to locate missle launchers for airstrikes:
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/03/opinion/american-troops-yemen.html
I believe they were stationed on the border. Of course it’s possible that there have been secret missions into the country that haven’t been made public.
I was making the assumption that there have been off the books missions into Yemen but can’t find any proof of that. I think it’s a pretty safe bet though.
Yeah, I’d take the ‘over’ on that.
And we joined in the naval blockade of Yemen.

You know, the funny thing is I usually think blondes are more theoretically attractive, but in practice brunettes own me. Like I’ll ogle the blonde but then go fall in love with her brunette friend.
For me lighter hair draws the eye because of contrast. Blondes get an easier first look. But I’m generally more attracted to brunettes. And red hair is awful.
You have no taste.
Redheads are best.
I knew that was going to rankle someone, but I didn’t think it would be you.
I’ve noticed a lot of guys go for blondes – even if the faces and bods aren’t the best – as long as the long blonde hair is there.
I’m not that picky when it comes to hair color – but love long black or short-ish blonde hair the most.

After allegations of a toxic workplace culture that discriminates against women and people of color, the Southern Poverty Law Center is trying to emerge and chart a way forward. Turmoil in the civil rights organization last month resulted in the firing of its famous founder and the resignations of its longtime president and legal director.
Karen Baynes-Dunning, an African-American woman, was then appointed to run the organization as its interim president. She spoke publicly about the path forward this week, for the first time, with NPR.
Founded in 1971, the SPLC is known for its work tracking and suing hate groups and for waging legal battles over issues like same-sex marriage, immigrant rights and treatment of prisoners.
————
SPLC has also hired an outside consultant to analyze its workplace culture and make recommendations for reform.
Conversations with current and former SPLC employees reveal how the organization, which is focused on social justice, has wrestled internally with a lack of inclusion and a management structure that concentrated power.
“While there might have been increased diversity over the years, there was still not equity and there is still not inclusion,” said Dana Vickers Shelley. She was a director of public affairs at SPLC from November 2012 to March 2014 and is now executive director of the ACLU of Maryland. “You can hire faces. You can say, ‘Look, we’re diverse,’ but if the decisions are still being made by the white people in leadership, then you do not have inclusion.”
Shelley says the SPLC’s brand promise is broken.
That’s a convoluted way to say “grifters and shakedown artists get caught with hands in cookie jar.”
I guess they meant well.
“Karen Baynes-Dunning, an African-American woman, was then appointed to run the organization as its interim president. “
At least a minority will now get to profit from that shitpile of an organization. They should be happy.
Equity!

So the officers lied and a couple of people are dead. I can only assume manslaughter charges will be filed shortly and that one fellow’s pension will be pulled.
Manslaughter? Isn’t death that occurs during the commission of a crime, or by the criminal’s associates, considered murder?
Hey, I agree, I’m just trying to be realistic. Then again manslaughter probably isn’t realistic here so why not aim big?
Lies were told, people formerly alive are no longer so.
You gotta toss a “totality of the circumstances” in there on this one, just to be sure…

OT – I’m really enjoying the Absolute Mad Lads series from Count Dankula.

That is a good series. Who doesn’t love a good story about incestuous Scottish cannibals?
Ditto, and I like that he’s branching out.
I watched the “Ice Cream Truck Wars” one last night.
Tell me it’s a show where people shoot those obnoxious things using rocket launchers.
Well, one got a shotgun blast through the windshield.
In 1980’s Scotland gangs figured out that “ice cream trucks” would be a good vehicle for dealing drugs. But they had to drive off competition, so the junkies would know where to go. Things go downhill from there.
That episode was bananas. I’m watching the one about Aum Shinrikio right now. Wow!
I’ll have to catch that one. The only problem is, I catch maybe about 60% of what’s spoken. I need to learn Scottish.
I love non-US television and the Scots stuff is, far and away, the hardest for me to grok at times. Mushmouthed Irish and Bumpkin Strine has nothing on them painted savages from the far north.

They have been doing a bang up job on covering the Noor trial though. Even they are not reflexively sucking cop dick for once. Great write up about the prosecution hammering the cop who was in charge of the on scene investigation.
Get ready to be shocked, for some reason the cop’s body cam was turned off when she talked with Noor, but then turned on again later. The prosecution made her look bad by repeatedly asking why it was turned off.
From what I’ve been reading, there are quite a few cops that deserve to lose their jobs for their actions during this investigation.
Thanks. The NPR link is worth a read as well.

What’s the matter with California?
For thousands of Californians, President Donald Trump’s near-constant attacks on their home state have not caused offense. In fact, they’re kicking in millions of dollars so that he can do it for another four years.
The president’s reelection campaign raised $1.7 million from California donors giving $200 or more in the first three months of 2019 — and no doubt even more from small-dollar donors in the state whose information does not have to be disclosed.
———-
The president has a devoted core of fans in California, many of whom are willing to contribute significant sums of money to his reelection campaign despite appearing to lack the kind of wealth that California’s donor class typically possesses.
While leading Democratic candidates like Harris and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker swept up big checks from Silicon Valley tech executives, Hollywood A-listers and high-powered attorneys and investors, the majority of Californians who donated $200 or more to Trump’s reelection campaign identified either as retirees, self-employed or in blue collar professions, including security guard, window cleaner, auto mechanic and secretary.
The president received more contributions from carpenters — $1,590 — than from actors — $805.
Stupid ungrateful hicks. Don’t they know Trump is destroying this nation?
But wait, I thought raising campaign funds from small donors was noble and proletarian?
The president received more contributions from carpenters — $1,590 — than from actors — $805.
And I’m sure the president is quite happy about that. The talking points write themselves.
Ok, off into the weird. I jumped over to Jezebel to see if anything is cooking there. They seem nearly dead. But I did find this gem in a book review:

My daughter is pissed that the city forces the residents to shovel the cities sidewalks (we aren’t blessed with one). It’s awesome.
I just need to make sure she isn’t ready to force people to do what she wants them to.
You mean, like, paying someone to do it for you? Cuz I’m told paying someone to do something is literal slavery.
“…and then the whole restaurant clapped!”
*crickets*
“…please clap.”
That clip makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Moderns can’t even do dynasties properly.
Sigh… my 5yo just quotes The Simpsons; to the never ending consternation of his Hasidic school staff.
At one time (I am out of practice), I was convinced I could go a whole day only quoting the Simpsons and be totally on topic at all times.
He’s been completely obsessed with monsters and Halloween for 3 years now (also dinosaurs, sharks, etc. but not as fiercely). Discovering the Treehouse Of Horror episodes has him positively gleeful.
the reaction from his teachers is funny and reminds me of girl I knew who was majoring in Early Childhood Ed. at FSU. It was the early 1990s and she hated the show because “…it celebrates that little yellow boy sassing authority figures.”
In the early years of the Simpsons (late 80s) there was a Bart Simpson shirt that said “Bart Simpson: Underachiever and proud of it”. Some schools banned it. I owned one and wore it to school but they never said anything to me about it.
And now look at you.
When I was in grade school in the early eighties, I wore that shirt that said “Kill ’em all, let God sort ’em out” with a picture of a skull wearing a green beret all the time to school. No one gave a crap. That would warrant a school lockdown today.
I had that same t-shirt. And a Dead Kennedys.
I did have a homemade t-shirt for some obscure punk band where I wrote “Piss on the World”. English teacher, during class, put black tape over the Piss word. Which I promptly took off when I got out of class.
My Budweiser shirt and Budman Gilligan hat were perfectly cromulent in 10th grade but resulted in one having to wear one’s shirt inside out after a visit to the principal’s office in 11th grade.
My t-shirt with Nancy Reagan smoking a joint, saying “Just say yes!” was also OK.
I hope she debunked properly and taught that taxes and spending went up during the Reagan regime.
Weren’t FedGov employees forced into Social Security during his tenure, or am I remembering incorrectly?
Another little tidbit from that LA Times article:
Just as the president has appealed to marginalized voters around the country, many of Trump’s donors in California are likely to have been hurt by the state’s soaring cost of living, left behind by an economic boom that has created immense wealth but also deepening inequality.
They are spread across the state. People living in the greater Bay Area, a noted bastion of liberalism, gave more to Trump’s reelection than those from Republicans’ traditional epicenter, Orange County — $267,000 to $213,000. Donors from the Sacramento metropolitan area donated $112,000, while other Central Valley donors contributed $126,000.
Huh. Something something lying eyes.
The Wife says, Trump always says stupid shit,

“Imagine an island where no one owns a gun. The probability that someone on that island is shot is zero.”
We dont have to imagine it, we can just look at history. Or we can look at countries that prohibit guns today. Or we can look at cities/counties right here in our own country that prohibit guns today. They are/were ruled by the fist and the weak are brutalized and in chains. But then I think that is the point of gun control.
A wise man keeps telling me “Gun-grabbers lie. That’s what they do.” I’m pretty sure he’s right.
They are/were ruled by the fist and the weak are brutalized and in chains.
Exactly this. The idiot’s entire argument rests on the assumption that guns are the only means to harm people. If there are other ways people may be harmed that a gun can deter, then the introduction of guns can create a lower probability of harm. Tamarkin (the author) should have to learn that lesson physically by being locked in a room with STEVE SMITH for a week.
First, assume a can opener.
If I remember correctly, things didn’t work out so well for Piggy on that tropical island that was blessedly free of any evil guns.
Blasey Ford makes Time’s 100 most influential list
Many of us weren’t terribly happy with the selection of Kavanaugh, but considering what they did to try and derail his confirmation he absolutely had to get through.
It does make one wonder how things may have been different if Blasey Ford and the rest had never been part of it. If his past decisions and his views on the constitution had actually been discussed. Would some Republicans have actually voted no? I bet some Never-Trumpers would have liked to stick it to him…

Vox haz a sad
If economic forecasts are accurate, the IRS will end up collecting about $3.5 trillion from taxpayers to fund everything from the FBI and the US military to food stamps, Medicare, and Social Security. And if those forecasts are accurate, that’s about $1 trillion short of what Congress needs to fund the government.
Pundits will surely blame the ballooning budget gap on three factors: the GOP’s massive corporate tax cuts, rich Americans who hide money in offshore accounts, and the growing number of retiring baby boomers who are tapping into Social Security.
All three are responsible, but they’re not the only reasons the US government is short of money.
Millions of Americans are simply not paying their taxes. For about every 30 taxpayers who file their tax returns each year, there’s one business or household that doesn’t. The amount of money they collectively owe is not trivial — about 14 million taxpayers owed $131 billion in taxes and penalties to the federal government in 2017, according to the latest IRS data.
———-
Trump, whose family has been accused of tax evasion, has been all too willing to keep weakening the agency’s enforcement powers. His administration cut another 140 special agents from the IRS last year, and his proposed 2020 budget, for example, would cut funding for IRS enforcement by nearly $154 million.
That would make it even harder for the IRS to collect unpaid taxes, pushing the US government even further into debt.
Stealing from the government!
The real thrust of the article: failure to remit payroll taxes to the IRS, not individuals who make oodles of money and then don’t file. And those darn Rethuglitards keep hamstringing the IRS!
Not much in there about simplifying the tax code, oddly enough.
1.3 billion does not equal a trillion. Cut spending assholes.
Simplify the code. Eliminate withholdings. Everyone makes quarterly estimates or cuts a check on 4/15.
See how easy that is?
You’re not giving the
Mafiagovernment the money it needs!Even if they collected 100% of all the taxes owed, would that pay for all the spending in the current budget? My guess is a big fat NO.
They would increase spending by an amount equivalent to 150% of that extra collected taxes, justified by the magic multiplier effect
Fuck you, cut spending.
I particularly enjoyed “rich Americans who hide money in offshore accounts”. I mean, that’s probably most of the trillion dollar shortfall right there.
Yes, they need that much. No way this country could survive on a mere $3.5 trillion.
I periodically check, and typically you could balance the budget every year if you spent what was spent 6 – 8 years ago.
That’s right: Congress and Trump could balance the budget this year by just adopting the same spending as Obama’s first or second year as President.
Yet, cutting spending to that level would somehow be catastrophic.
I know a girl who doesn’t ever file her taxes, or even really pay them. She almost exclusively works for tips and so has basically no withholding, lives a lifestyle which won’t ever require her to present her 1040 for anything, and gets frequent cash infusions from random guys in her life. It pisses off my wife that she can get away with all that.
One day the IRS is gonna come knocking and the bill will come due. The thing that frustrates me is that, when that day does come, they’ll probably settle with her for some minute fraction of what she owes in back taxes and some dude will give her the cash to cover it. So basically she’ll get away with never paying taxes while the rest of us write annual checks to Uncle Sam.
Nothing’s stopping you from taking up a career in the exotic dance arts Subwoofer.
YES THERE IS!

What pisses me off is people who get “refunds” for the mere fact that they have children.
Well, that’s what you get for failing to contribute to the future industrial base of the union, comrade.
Ugh – one of EF’s earliest divorce cases was for a woman whose husband made all of his money “under the table”. And quite illegally too.
He started a charity to help “disadvantaged children”, made TV commercials for local businesses but had them pay the charity. Everything in his life, including his numerous personal shopping trips, were paid for by charity using its credit card. Time to buy a house? Well he couldn’t get a mortgage because he had no verifiable “income” so instead he did a land-contract. Need a car? Buy one – cash – from a car dealership he did work for.
“Stealing from the government!”
I had a progressive at work get furious on me when I told them I hoped Trump had done his best to pay the least amount of taxes possible. In fact, I pointed out if I ever was on a jury (good luck with that) where someone was being charged with tax evasion, I would very likely vote to acquit or hang the jury if said person was not a pro tax asshat. When asked why I would feel that way I pointed out I considered taxation theft, and that I would ONLY hold the people demanding everyone pay more taxes accountable for tax fraud of any kind. Man she was pissed at me…
The potburger.

Fucking gross, just smoke it and quit being stupid
Not really. But they’re sure marketing it as one.
*I mean, “Not really a potburger”
It certainly has a calming effect, I know…….
That’s THC. Hemp-based CBD has almost none.
No, that’s CBD, I take 5mg. Drops every morning, no high, just calm, helps me drive in traffic without killing people.
What’s the fun in that?
I don’t get high at work, too dangerous
Eliminate withholdings. Everyone makes quarterly estimates or cuts a check on 4/15.
If people had to write a monthly check to the govt for “services rendered” (har dee fucking har) just like they pay for the electric and gas and cable, they might pay a little closer attention.
We wouldn’t want that.
That’d be nice.
If nothing else, move Tax Day to the day before Election Day.
I think we all know that these decisions were deliberately made to shield the government from the taxpayers’ ire and have absolutely zero chance of being altered.
Christine Blasey Ford didn’t derail Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, but she at least has this consolation — she made Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world.
Lies, damned lies, and Time Magazine.
Horrific Spectre Looms
President Donald Trump suggested Monday that he will follow through on his threat to send migrants detained at the southern border to so-called sanctuary cities, a move he sees as a way to punish Democrats who disagree with his hard-line anti-immigration policies. The apparent executive-order-by-tweet came just days after he sent out a heinous propaganda video splicing images from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks into a speech by Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar. And that smear of one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress came about a week after Trump forced Kirstjen Nielsen out as secretary of homeland security, reportedly because she wasn’t cruel and lawless enough for his tastes.
Taken together, Trump’s actions are xenophobic, dangerous, and possibly illegal. They also offer a particularly grim preview of what the next two years of his reelection campaign will look like. This sort of demagoguery has long been Trump’s default posture, but coming from a president with a, um, limited attention span, the recent burst almost looks like message discipline.

there’s also no reason to doubt that racial resentment will be the motivating force of his reelection effort. It has been the unifying theme of his politics since well before he cannonballed into the GOP primary four years ago this summer. This is the guy who laid the groundwork for his run by repeatedly claiming that the nation’s first black president had no right to be in the Oval Office, then kicked off his campaign with a jeremiad against Mexicans, and followed that up by calling for a Muslim ban. It should not have been a surprise that his inaugural address was littered with racism. Or that he proposed one version of a Muslim ban after another. Or that now he’s trying to twist the memory of 9/11 into an Islamophobic weapon against the nation’s first hijab-clad congresswoman. Trump told us who he was then, and he’s telling us who is he now. On this at least, we can believe him.
He eats babies of color for breakfast.
Islam… hm, yep – still not a “race”.
Or that now he’s trying to twist the memory of 9/11 into an Islamophobic weapon against the nation’s first hijab-clad congresswoman.
I recall a retweet of the NY Post cover which juxtaposed her exact words with a picture of what she was referring to. Has Trump done anything else on Omar’s view that Islamists killing 3,000 Americans is no big deal, and her call for Muslims to accost anyone who they think is looking at them funny?
I have to admit that I have found it extremely funny to watch DiBlasio bitching about how Trump is acting illegally when he threatens to send illegals to NYC. A city that has taken the bold step of publicly declaring that it would thumb its nose at Federal law and offer sanctuary to illegal aliens.
“When we act illegally, it is because we are so pure and wonderful. But when the bad orange man does something illegal, he needs to be stopped!”
It’s not even illegal. Refugees are settled in specific cities all the time.
Bullshit. The Somalis chose the Twin Cities because of the climate similarities to their homeland.
Scratch a Norwegian or a Swede and you find a Somali.
“Where are…muh roads?!”
This broke my brain.
List of 20 top metro areas where illegal immigrants live.
List of sanctuary cities. (Wikipedia, and this is only ‘official’ stuff and not ‘we made no declaration but we really don’t bother’)
There is significant overlap between the two. Which makes sense because, unless you have a job lined up, where would you go? A place full of MAGA racists who want you gone or a place full of people like you where ICE is held at arm’s length.
So why are Democrats bitching?! He’s delivering next generation of constituents to them, he’s increasing their representation by census, and it’s more convenient for migrants than dodging the border patrol and making your way on your own. These people are not going to live in leafy, expensive and pale-faced areas where people like Pelosi or those who donate to her live. All it will do is add more pressure to increase spending (something they are in favor of), expand the government services (ditto) and lower the price of unskilled labor that the well-off benefit from the most.
This broke my brain.
Trump: “You know, I’ll take over for coyotes once we catch the migrants and deliver them to where they were probably going.”
“REEEEE” “MAGA OWNAGE!”
Total ownage. That’s why they’re mad. They don’t give a flying fuck about the refugee/migrants or they wouldn’t be agitating for dumping them into the streets of border towns to fend for themselves.
