As is right and proper.
A week long shoulder problem has left me quite ornery – I am leaving work at mid-day to go to convenient care and get this @#$% fixed. But, personal whinging aside, the Links must flow…er, be posted. So, your linkings are as follows:
- While Illinois is doing the right thing – they are making sure they crony and exception their way forward. “The measure would also create a designation for “social equity applicants” hoping to obtain licenses and provide minority-owned businesses support by offering technical assistance, access to capital and loans and relief from fees that have posed a barrier to entry for those looking to crack into the state’s pot industry — which is currently dominated by a handful of predominantly-white medical marijuana companies.“
- This sure beats Uber… “On Sunday, the king was carried through the streets on a gilded palanquin for the royal procession.” It is good to be the king.
- I think this qualifies as “bad luck“.
- Is good Rooshian plane. But seriously, good on the stewardess for saving people. Of course, “planes will not be grounding. Am good flying!”
I hope you get some relief, Swiss. That amount of pain is a lot to shoulder.
Right out of the gate MikeS knocks the chip right off Swiss’s shoulder!
*grits teeth, strongly narrows gaze*
Sorry. I couldn’t help myself! It’s a disease. Yeah, that’s the ticket. A disease…it’s not my fault!
Who wants a kid with a social disease? Officer krupke?
So are you more ornery than normal?
What kind of shoulder problem can be fixed by an urgent care clinic and a visit to a PA ?
I sense a catbutt…
Or a skeletal cow.
I still want to understand why he needs his ass fixed to get his shoulder to stop bothering him….
You obviously do not have a chiropractory degree.
No I don’t but I often tell the pretty ladies that I have an injection that will give them 12 essential vitamins and minerals that will cure them of all sorts of things….
Sanity? Happiness? heterosexuality?
You must be doing it wrong then Jarflax, cause mine makes things better.
Swiss shrugged.
A topical music selection
It is not good to be king. Your life is dictated to you by everyone else’s wants, needs and mostly their fuck-ups. Who needs that shit?
Maybe that’s just me.
The assassination attempts are mere spice, Suthen.
The trick is to remain perfectly still, since the hunter-seeker targets on movement.
Yeah, I always felt it would be better to be the King’s younger brother. Pretty much all of the perks without most of the bullshit and responsibility.
At least until you marry an American social climber….
Well, I guess nothing makes you immune from bad decisions.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titles_of_Nobility_Amendment
Needs just 26 states to ratify it. And still closer to the law of the land than the ERA.
Ky was the 2nd state to ratify. I am okay with that. Good on us.
I think the reason KY didnt get around to ratifying the actual 13th until 1976 is that they had already ratified the original proposed 13th amendment in 1811.
Yeah, that is why.
There’s another zombie amendment that would require a strict ratio of population to members of Congress, floating since 1790’s
I would favor that amendment if they would add “and so forth” to the end.
After the first enumeration required by the first article of the Constitution, there shall be one Representative for every thirty thousand, until the number shall amount to one hundred, after which the proportion shall be so regulated by Congress, that there shall be not less than one hundred Representatives, nor less than one Representative for every forty thousand persons, until the number of Representatives shall amount to two hundred, after which the proportion shall be so regulated by Congress, that there shall not be less than two hundred Representatives, nor more than one Representative for every fifty thousand persons.
What does it use to count “population”?
Barcodes tattooed on your forearm.
We would have between 1600 and 1624 representatives after the 2010 census (At least 1600, no more than 1 per 190000 people).
Aye, There’s the rub.
Residents, just like the census always does. Excluding Indians not taxed and 40% of certain other people.
The census
“At least 1600, no more than 1 per 190000 people”
Still seems low to me. Get that closer to 1 per 50K and I’m all for it. Anything beyond 1 per 75K is still too ripe for corruption.
When you have something like 10,000 people in the House Of Representatives, there’s too many people for lobbyists to influence, too many arms to twist to horse trade, and too high a risk of filibuster to make legislation anything but terse. Illinois is the perfect example of what happens when you reduce the number of representatives – the state congress has become one man’s fiefdom because reducing the number of reps consolidated power.
That better be Murray Head….
[clicks link]
I would have accepted something like this too.
I didn’t know Yule Brenner was Asian?
This movie should be memory holed.
Don’t know about Yule Brenner, but Yul Brynner was born in Vladivostok, and so is as Asian as they come.
Really?
Who knew?
You of course.
But obviously not me.
Still it’s racist as fuck because reasons.
Does being born somewhere immediate assign one to the predominate genetics of that geography?
Asking for a friend.
Nope, but “Asian” can’t be an ethnicity due to the phenotypical variation across Asia.
“social equity applicants”
I don’t know how that could stand under current jurisprudence.
“The clause has no meaning and the statute should be read as though it were not there.”
I have a two word answer for that.
“Illinois Judges”
Please. Minnesoda has $35M (and it was recently given more) that is dedicated to grants for “social equity”. Which is way better than Illnoise. We don’t even ask that our minorities start a MJ business. We just give them a grant and then take their word that it was spent wisely.
That’s like 350,000 per person in Minnesota.
Government sponsored discrimination pure and simple.
Pffft my mayor gave his wife three-quarters of a billion dollars to piss away on that shit, and nobody know where any of it went.
“Bad Luck” or “Karma”?
That neighborhood is what passes for “reasonably nice” in Rochester. Luck had nothin’ to do with this.
Fuck the king of Thailand, and his laws against insulting the crown.
No googling. What the hell is a “palanquin”?
It’s a box carried by other humans, like a sedan chair, but larger and lower set. Requires a minimum of two operators
So, something like Hillary’s box?
EEEEUUUWWW!
Seriously, why would you need to google that?
My fantasies aren’t as spicy as yours.
Pimping ain’t easy but it is necessary….
The King has a strong pimp hand…
A king’s love is very different then that of a square.
And his love is not like those of squares…
You joke, but…
Here’s a leaked video of when he was just a prince. It’s his 3rd wife’s birthday and he kept her topless and just wearing a g-string as she doted on him. He is also smoking a pipe.
I guess it is truly good to be the king…
My first thought was wondering if the video leaker still had his or her head attached to their body.
Then as I watched the flashes go off and heard the shutters go off I realized the sick fuck wanted people to see.
Admit it Straff, you thought that a palanquin was Sheriff Brody, but you were a bit puzzled because you thought Brody and Hooper were the real pals.
I was hoping for this.
LO fucking L
Swiss goes to “convenient care”, says “Doc, my shoulder hurts when I do this”
Doc says, “Well, stop doing that”
…but I like living.
masturbation ain’t living Swiss.
It can be a lot safer and cheaper than dating however…
This is living
Are you admitting you “lived” to that back when too?
ITT: Pope Jimbo establishes a paper trail to back up his FSA expenses at the One Rub, One Tug massage parlor.
Wait, that stuff is tax deductible?
Trump could win over a lot of on-the-fence voters if he moved pot to Schedule V. Next best thing to full legalization and he doesn’t need Congress’ support.
Nevermind the fact that it would be the moral thing to do.
He’s a teetotaler. I never had and still have no hope he’ll reschedule anything during his time in office.
“A lot of people are drawing comparisons” between his killing and the 2015 shootings, Singletary said at a news conference. “Until you hear it from us in regards to what the motive is, everything else is just pure speculation.”
It’s a goddamn mystery.
Morning, gang! On vacation, so why the hell am I up so early?
Because the cycle has been hammered into your system.
Tru dat.
I’m one of those people who wakes up fifteen to twenty minutes before the alarm goes off and rarely wakes up after 8am on mondays off. I guess I should have had more than one beer last night.
* my days
I sleep a lot worse after boozing. Easy to fall asleep, but I almost invariably wake up ~3 hours later and can’t get back to sleep.
The trick is to slam about 64oz of water before you crash. If you’re going to wake up in the middle of the night it may as well be just to piss, not because you’re dehydrated and fell like warmed over death.
Yeah, I learned about that on this website last year. Basically, it take alcohol 3-4 hours to metabolize so not only do you wake up at that point, you wake up with a sugar buzz.
I no longer have a nightcap. Instead I start drinking around 6pm.
Have another drink. Then do it again 3 hours later.
One of the reasons I no longer drink .
That’s generally a sign of good sleep hygiene. I do the same thing.
“I and the Queen are very pleased and delighted to see all the citizens together to express goodwill for my coronation,”
“I and the Queen” is the sequel to “The King and I”.
No, Yul Brynner, not Orson Welles.
Are there also concubines involved or just one Queen?
“express goodwill for my coronation”
I mean what more evidence do you need of his right to rule. No one says anything against his rule.
So, the wife decided she wanted to watch the CBS Twilight Zone reboot because her friend at work said it was good. Well, three episodes in, and it is obvious that this reboot is actually Woke Twilight Zone. Holy shit, it was damn near unbearable.
Are they just taking reconstituted, triple-reprocessed original twilight zone paste and injecting woke into the slurry? I can’t see them writing anything new.
It seems like it’s new material, but the wokeness takes precedence and basically seems to be driving the stories. Obviously some episodes are better/worse than others, but the wokeness is always there. Episode 3 was all wokeness all the time. Episode 2 was primarily about the wokeness, but it was injected into the story repeatedly.
“Episode 2 was primarily notabout the wokeness,
That seems to be Hollywood’s MO: they’ve run out of ideas, so they just recycle stuff that was originally good, but put some horseshit woke spin on it.
I am glad I didn’t bother then.
Yeah, my wife was watching and I’m yelling at the TV “what a load of horseshit leftist propaganda!”
I find myself watching less and less TV because of this. These days I spend any time I watch TV looking at Science/History and at other channels with documentaries, and even these are going woke. Its bullshit leftist propaganda all the time.
Netflix is the worst. Their original content keeps sliding further and further into the woke wilderness. After “Knock Down the House” (which was outright agitprop) I’m considering dropping them.
I can honestly say I have watched near zero Netflix content. I have had the whole Jack Ryan thing on my someday list, but the more I hear about how Netflix has gone into woke stupid land, the more I think I can save myself a whole world of stupid by staying away from any content on it.
Oops sorry That Jack Ryan shit is on Amazon, which I hear is giving Netflix a run for their woke money. The show on Netflix I was told to watch was Lucifer. I used to watch it for laughs when it was on one of the regular TV channels.
Amazon is doing some good stuff. I liked Jack Ryan, and The Patriot is awesome. I can’t quite get into Bosch, but I think I just haven’t given it enough of a chance; there’s nothing about it I dislike, it just hasn’t really hooked me.
But yeah, Netflix originals have gone to pot. The stuff they either buy or co-produce with foreign companies is still pretty good, like Dark and The Last Kingdom, and I liked Marco Polo a lot–which, of course, they canceled. Stranger Things, Narcos, those are good, and if you mute Attenborough the various Planet shows are great. Besides that, it seems like they churn out a ton of in-house original stuff that’s utter tripe. It’s like they paid some company to research their key demographics and the answer was “woke urban Millenials”.
Put me in as a “Stranger Things” fan. Hope Season 3 doesn’t go all wokey.
“But yeah, Netflix originals have gone to pot.</em.,"
I wonder if that move to stupidity was a byproduct of the Obamas joining that enterprise, or the other way around.
Amazon also has Man in the High Castle and has picked up The Expanse.
‘The Last Kingdom’ and ‘Frontier’ are good.
Oh man, I can’t believe I forgot The Expanse! That’s an awesome show.
I just finished S03 of The Expanse. I hope Amazon gives it a little more room to breathe because man that felt rushed. Still excellent, though.
I Think You Should LeaveI Think You Should Leave was pretty good. Absurdist sketch comedy.
Letterkenny. ‘Nuff said.
I’ve noticed this trend on the local news. It used to be watchable but now it’s one woke story after the next.
I quit watching local news. Or for that matter any news on the woke channels, because it has not been anything but team blue propaganda for ever. At least the team red propaganda outlet doesn’t pretend to be neutral.
I’ve spent a lot of time in hotels this year because business. A lot of time.
I have yet to turn on a tv.
“I’m yelling at the TV “what a load of horseshit leftist propaganda!””
I know I’m old, but I caught myself doing that about 25 years ago. I watch live sports with the sound turned down and I stream a few shows some trusted people (including glibs) recommend and that’s it. Netflix will probably get cancelled when I complete a couple series I’m in the middle of (I go rather slow).
Wife loves hate watching…what the hell is the name of it….Special Victims something something. They have really jumped the woke shark. Really? Who is writing that shit? It is worse than awful. I have to deliberately ignore it or I start snarking and ranting. The last time I did that she didn’t say a word. She turned the TV off and went to the bedroom to watch.
That would be Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
They jumped the woke shark 20 years ago. L&O has always been the fictionprop wing of the Democrat party.
Oh, yeah, it’s real, real bad. On a whim and because I was three cocktails in I decided to do the 7-day trial of the CBS app to watch it. I loved the original series and I do like Jordan Peele. It’s utter shit. I lasted about ten minutes into the first episode before I checked out completely. And that’s a shame, because I’m also a Tracy Morgan fan.
Count yourself lucky you avoided episode 3 – it was basically all about the righteousness of Black Lives Matter and how white cops constantly target and persecute law-abiding black folks for no damn reason other than sadistic racism.
Ooh, another series of articles for Glibertarians.

Recent Firefox upgrade wiped out Monocle – but NoScript has a fix.
The fix I’ve been using doesn’t require giving the twerps at mozilla permission to run “studies” of pushed code on your box.
Under the profile (appdata/roaming/mozilla/firefox/profiles/[jumble of chars]/) find ‘extensions.json’, edit it, find/replace “appDisabled”:true with “appDisabled”:false and “signedState”:-1 with “signedState”:2 . restart firefox.
To be clear, my objection is to turning on permissions to run unrelated code rather than the fix for “We forgot the intermediate cert was going to expire, and we forced everyone to use signed extensions because we don’t want to let people manage their own needs”
Gracias – I just grabbed the first fix I saw.
The main drawback is that the changes in extensions.json will get undone by the program after a while. I’m hoping the normal, permanant fix will be in place before it gets too annoying.
Our great national nightmare is finally over:
Firefox pushes another update to fix its broken add-ons
I did have to re-install almost all of my add-ons. Not sure why they completely disappeared. Not sure if that is going to be the case for everyone or if my tinkering with work-arounds caused that.
The vocal “legacy” users are those who take umbrage with the capricious and demonstrably bad changes made by mozilla in pursuit of being more like chrome. If their users wanted a browser like chrome, they’d use chrome, stop breaking things chasing google.

In an interview with The New York Times out today, Pelosi said she held similar concerns about the midterms last year:
“If we win by four seats, by a thousand votes each, he’s not going to respect the election,” said Ms. Pelosi, recalling her thinking in the run-up to the 2018 elections.
“He would poison the public mind. He would challenge each of the races; he would say you can’t seat these people,” she added. “We had to win. Imagine if we hadn’t won — oh, don’t even imagine. So, as we go forward, we have to have the same approach.”
The Times reports Pelosi has told people around her that she doesn’t “automatically trust the president to respect the results of any election short of an overwhelming defeat.”
Could you imagine if he fabricated evidence that his opponent colluded with a foreign government to win the election, prompting an investigation into every aspect of his opponents life? And then could you imagine him proceeding to go around the country blaming everything and everyone except himself for the loss while continuing to push the faux collusion narrative attempting to undermine his opponent at every chance while also disparaging the voters and his opponents supporters?
It’s good that at least the Democrats respect the results of an election, right?
If they had not been trying to run a coup and have done nothing but spent the last 3 years sabotaging the country, I would have found this funny. But the constitutional crisis we find ourselves in while they fiddle away, just makes me wonder how much worse they plan to make things get. Shit, now I heard they are saying the good economy is because of Obama, and not Trump getting rid of the stupid shit Obama did to keep the bad economy he blamed on Bush going.
Plus 1 Stacy Adams.
“Poison the public mind.” Do these people own mirrors?
Would Pelosi even have a reflection in a mirror?
Yes, but the mirror wouldn’t survive the encounter.
“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the most deplorable Crone of all?” “There is but One, Fair Queen and her name is Hillary Rodham Clinton!” *Shrieks and busts mirror*
They’re unbelievable.
“He would poison the public mind.”
I imagine Trump saying something terrible such as, “I also heard those of you who didn’t vote.”
The epitome of not respecting the results was when they began stating publicly to remove the Electoral College. That wasn’t out of principle. It was because they lost.
That is a deliberate, calculated attempt to disenfranchise middle America (the deplorables).
And they’d flip on a dime if the situation ever changed and urban areas starting voting “wrong”.
Everything they do is about obtaining and maintaining power.
Stacey Abrams still does not concede. #she persisted!
#Resist!
These people ONLY think elections are fair and good when they win..
Remember how pissed they got at Trump for saying he wouldn’t just accept the election results on faith when Hillary thought they had rigged the election totally in their favor?
“Imagine if we hadn’t won — oh, don’t even imagine.”
R’s in control of both houses and the oval office? The result would be the same.
Southern go to human events.com and read an article named “Checkmate”.

Up here every single Government ad features POC. It’s not like us white-ish folk are still 80% of the population or anything crazy like that.
I don’t really care one way or another about the ethnic balance of Sutter Home commercials or whatever, but I have always found it funny in a stupid and blatantly disingenuous way that in order to meet acceptable standards for “diversity” you have to discriminate against a majority of the population, and then once you’ve established disproportionate representation you call that “equal” and feel good about yourself. In life, I find that it’s extremely rare to find populations that look anything like a Beneton ad. In my group of friends I’d say that the demographic makeup just about tracks the population patterns you see in central Maryland for a solidly middle-class area.
And like you say, there are a lot of white people. Obviously there are local concentrations of minority ethnicities for various reasons and the increase in interracial couples is changing this a little, but viewed as an entire population the US is still majority white, more or less depending on if you include Hispanic/Latino respondents who identify as white. Which, of course, points to the more ludicrous aspects of the concept of race, but still.
“Hispanic” is a cultural group, and there are plenty who are white.
Yeah, but it’s a question on the census and you see it in a lot of race radio button menus. For various regulations and government programs people who identify as Hispanic or Latino are categorized separately. Which, again, points to the sloppiness of the concept of race as well as to one of the reasons it’s such a prominent feature in society.
The more they tighten, the more opportunity there is for a competitor. Somebody will wise up to that fact.
“Multiculturalism” is another word that had most of its meaning bashed out of it. Like “diversity”. They now just mean something like “rightthink”. Eventually we can dispose with the superfluous words when one will do. Someone wrote a book about this process a few decades ago….

A quest, of sorts.
If not a quest, then maybe a game.
Welcome to the real world of cohabitation.
Prince charming doesn’t sleep in his work suit. Shocking ain’t it, Princess.
So she thought she was moving in this that 50 Shades guy and learned that was just fantasy?
She should just tell him she had this crazy hot dream the other night where he was wearing his work suit and she was giving him the greatest blowjob in the history of blowjobs. He’ll be dressing quite smart for the next decade.
If it’s a work suit and she misses taking it off, it sounds like she isn’t there to greet him with a martini and nothing but a frilly apron on when he gets home.
Run tracksuit, run!
In my house we call that “inside clothes” or “soft clothes”. This is the signal that the wearer is no longer interested in engaging with the public, and would appreciate nothing more than some time on the couch with a vodka and soda watching TV and not being bothered. My wife is a virulent Progressive in many respects and we disagree deeply and frequently on topics such as politics generally and things that matter very much to me, such as gun control. One might wonder how and why our relationship has worked, arguably successfully and largely happily, for pushing fifteen years now. It is because, ladies and gentlemen, we embrace the old t-shirt and gym shorts, the sweat pants, the flannel pajama pants that were on sale at Target.
The Daily Mail sure know how to pack an article with pictures and content.
They do seem to like visuals, eh?
Often the same photo three times. Kills my phone so I don’t bother unless I’m using my lap top.

Ugh. I gave up on them after 2016. If you thought TDR was bad at TOS you should have seen what happened to decent. thoughtful commentary after the Dark Lord won. That’s when I started sniffing around you guys and migrated here. No one could take a joke anymore.
I gave up on Slate when Hitchens passed away.

If it has the Chrome UI, I already don’t like it.
I think it’s actually closer to Firefox, at least on the surface. It’s based on Chromium and it has access to the Chrome app store, but I don’t think the plan is to track Google’s design choices.
by offering technical assistance, access to capital and loans and relief from fees that have posed a barrier to entry
Universal deregulation that would benefit anyone trying to start a business would be totes racist.
Well if government is not picking winners & losers, then it is unwoke and not socially just. You really want the consumer to decide what is good and what is not? The plebes can’t be trusted to do the right thing for the elite political class to stay in milk and honey….
Because white people are a majority any universal legislation or policy benefits the white population disproportionately more than minority populations. That’s white privilege. Seriously. If you’re a 60 year old former coal miner in Kentucky retired on disability and happen to be white the greater availability of access to technology is suburban, majority-white secondary schools since the, say, 90s, has, according to the theory, benefited you because of your race.

From the “That’s Problematic” department: If Marvel superheroes were real, they’d all have weight problems.
Once again the one question I wanted answered was not covered. That would be, “How much govt money was spent on this study?”
The Marine Corps would probably consider them overweight despite passing the PT test and having low body-fat. Lance Corporal Thor disagrees.
Uffda. Been there. You described me perfectly. DId great on the PT tests, but because I lifted a lot would always come in as overweight. The only upside was that the weight waiver was easy to get. The doc would measure my neck and then write up my waiver.
The worst part was getting teased for being a “fat body” by the other guys. Especially by guys who were 20 lb under the weight limit but were in horrible condition.
Fond memories of a 5’4″ Marine who could bench 500 lbs taking off his shirt in the First Seargant’s office and asking him to point to the fat.
I think someone is missing the point of the genre.
And the breasts of female superheroes are frequently larger than their heads
To be fair Suthen, they knew this was going on and didn’t make a big deal about it. But then they came out with Hydrocephalus Girl and they felt they had to say something.
That’s because BMI is bullshit.
I just finished reading “How to draw comics the Marvel way” by Stan Lee. (Great book by the way, even if you are not into drawing). He specifically states that you should exaggerate when drawing superheros. They should be taller and more muscular, the women should be curvier, the action poses should be more dramatic. It’s a style, a look, they were trying to achieve on purpose. They were NOT trying to be realistic.
People and their stupid myopic view of the world. I can’t even.
From Stan’s mouth to Bart Sears’ ears my man.
Wait until they get around to doing a study on Anime characters.
BMI is a shit metric because it incorporates fat-free and fatty mass, which have an inverse j-shaped and j-shaped curve on a mass/longevity scale. Given that most Marvel characters are heavy on the FFM and low on fatty mass, the inverse J-shape predominates, and BMI can’t be used as a proxy for longevity. BMI combined with one of waist circumference, DEXA, water-displacement, or caliper-based-fat-measurements have all been shown to be more accurate than BMI.
TLDR: This is a shit study designed to make headlines by attention whore researchers doing bad research.
It’s just woke BS tarted up with fake “science”.

The girlfriend and I are both older then her. She would have to go back to the church in order to volunteer. The really mind boggling part is she works as a pediatric nurse.
Science makes kids in your mid 40s eas…well, not easy, but possible. And Expensive.
Our pastor mentioned the “cost to raise a kid to 18” in a sermon shortly after ours was born. I joked to my wife that we had paid 20% down so we didn’t have to pay PMI.
I drove my daughter 10 miles to get a F’real milks shake. Cost me $4.
It never ends.
milk
One of the main reasons people in the more modern world are having fewer kids is the cost. It has become insane in the last 50 years. Coupled with the narcissism prevalent amongst the younger generation, and it is a recipe that should dissuade the people that believe a pyramid scheme (socialism in any form) is the answer to the world’s woes. And yet, we keep getting more of both,
The first time my daughter asks me where babies come from I am going to tell her the truth…you buy them from a lab in Nashville.
Watch out for the counterfeit babies from Chinese or Russian labs though. They may seem less expensive, but they break easier.
Some friends of ours were going to go to the Czech Republic for IVF but they got pregnant before the trip so didn’t have to do it.
It was going to be significantly cheaper to spend 3-6 months there than to do it locally.
They both worked season jobs (she is a realtor and he works construction) so they could take the time off.
My ex and I tried IVF some 25 years ago. I could afford it, but it cost me upwards of $100k because the insurance only covered the first attempt and not the other 3. After that we adopted. That was only $30K because I made so much money working 80hr weeks as a consultant. I knew I should have gone on the welfare rolls and then all that stuff would have been paid for by someone else.
Fortunately it only cost us about $30k.
We were down to our last egg though.
Insurance didn’t even cover our first attempt.
That could have gone much worse imo
I got more and more worried for you as I read this sentence.
Same here.
Ditto.
“My younger sister has gone baby crazy, and was trying to convince me to…
Name it Judge Judy if it’s a girl!
” She has three kids of her own”
By #3 they should be to the ,”don’t ever have kids stage”. She must hate you.
I suppose it could have been worse, she could have been trying to convince her daughter (early 20’s) to have a kid. I suppose grandma doesn’t sound as nice as aunt though.
I think that there is a bounce after the last kid gets to be around 5. The kids are starting school and the woman looks around and remembers how good it was to have a tiny baby and starts thinking that she should have another.
My wife briefly had that moment. Luckily I had gotten snipped and she moved on. Although she did tell me about friends of ours who didn’t let a mere snippage stop them.
The wife had two sons and the husband got snipped after the last kid. After a while she started thinking about how much she wanted a daughter. So she nagged her husband into agreeing to get his vasectomy reversed. But the procedure was vey expensive and she was very cheap. So she went out and found some outfit in Arkansas that did cut rate reversals. Since she wore the pants in the family she packed up hubby and sent him off to get the procedure.
At this point in my wife’s story, I was in tears laughing. At the pussitude of the husband, at the cheapness of the wife. At the whole thing. My wife did not enjoy my amusement. She said that it showed how much the husband loved the wife that he would do that for her.
The end of the story is that they thought it didn’t work because she never got pregnant. Then about 12 years later, she did get pregnant and now they got to have another son when they were in their 40’s.
“My wife briefly had that moment. Luckily I had gotten snipped and she moved on. Although she did tell me about friends of ours who didn’t let a mere snippage stop them.”
Mailman or pizza delivery guy that liked to watch?
Our daughter’s turning 4 in a month, my wife’s cousin has a one-year-old, and her sister is pregnant, so the pressure is back on. We’re–well, she–is in the “advanced maternal age” category–she’s 24, although her license implies that she’s 38, which is a disgusting lie–and trying for another. She was gung-ho bordering on obsessive for a few months. Now that’s waning as she realizes that if she’s pregnant now, she’s not going to be able to drink while she’s visiting her brother in San Diego during Memorial Day weekend, or at the annual family week at the beach, or on the patio of our local spot when it’s a nice, warm, sunny day…
I’m picturing that scene from Raising Arizona with the kid’s beating on Nick’s car.
“You know what I’m thinking about? I’m thinking about when we were in that downturn and President Obama came into office and he had to deal with that with the Congress to try to, one, right the financial industry and, two, get us on the road to recovery,” Klobuchar asserted during the interview. “I remember that the Republicans were giving him grief when he took any credit for that. So I think that we have had policies in place starting with President Obama that have aided that recovery.”
Booker then added a similar statement in his interview: “First of all, I love that Trump is taking credit for a recovery that started under Obama.”
Funny how it was stagnant until Barry left office and his policies were changed and in some cases reversed.
https://dailycaller.com/2019/05/05/klobuchar-booker-obama-credit-economy/
Remember when Obama was first president and would blame everything on Bush? He’s just trying to make up for it.
Now square this with Obama making statements that “3% growth is never coming back” and “this (stagnant) economy is the new normal” and “How does Trump think he can make the economy better? Does he have a magic wand?”
Just a pen to cross out the crap you threw on the page, Barry.
And that is what pisses them off the most. Trump proved that the shit the left did so they could control thew winners and losers (and fatten team blue campaign coffers) was counter productive and directly responsible for the bad economic situation that wouldn’t go away. But leftist would prefer a shitty economy over losing control of what choices people could make that resulted in financial growth.
Having my bursitis worked on was the most traumatic medical procedure I’ve had. The orthopedist says “we’re going to move your scapula a bit then insert this *shows holysweetdeityfuckoff needle* into your bursa.” Then five of the burliest orderlies ever enter and separate my shoulderblade from my ribs.
I had bursitis removed from my elbow. Wasn’t that bad
Christ, I’ll keep the bursitis, thanks.
“Yeah, that’s great and all. Now make with the putting me to sleep.”
Uffda. The climate just won’t change the way that the doomsayers keep telling us it will. Those poor people just can’t catch a break.
The latest: Water levels in Lake Superior are way up.
There have been a lot of stories over the last several years talking about how climate change was going to dry up Lake Superior. All of them were written during a few dry years and I’m sure the Believers all thought that pretty soon we’d be able to walk to Canada from Wisconsin. But then go figure, we got a few wet years and now things are a bit higher.
>> able to walk to Canada from Wisconsin
Ugh – we already have enough Canadians here.
Look. If it takes resettling a few Canadians in your neck of the woods, to get rid of Wisconsinites, then it is your patriotic duty to welcome those beaver lovers with open arms.
I like beaver as much as the next man but it’s the floppy head thing that puts me off.
What kind of “beaver loving” are we talking about here your holiness? I don’t need more competition…
Huh, see I would have thought the levels would go up because of climate change because of melting ice caps & glaciers.
I would have thought That is your problem right there. You don’t think. You just look at whatever condition is currently happening and then write a story blaming those conditions on climate change. I’m sure that those stories will get written this year. Now that the levels are up. But the lake levels were lower when those other stories were written.
Countdown to story proclaiming ‘OMG lake levels are up because climate change!’
I see a new Gordon Lightfoot song coming. Lotsa sunken stuff to be reclaimed when the Inland Sea dries.
The Rape of the Edmund Fitzgerald? /SUPERIOR SMITH

Council worker sacked for selling X-rated videos
This requires more research.
Do Argentinians go Brazilian?
Not since that Fist of God debacle.
Pics or it didn’t happen.
Got Dam, I’d be happy to help her out with the rent.
My local government workers do not look like that.
Day 6 of working in our new open office environment. It’s so noisy my ears ring after work. I feel like I’m being watched from all angles. There is no where you can go to hide unless you count the bathroom. This is supposed to encourage teamwork, but I’m the only person from my team in this office, everyone else is spread out over the country. I wish nothing but misery for the person who came up with the open office concept.
No headphones allowed?
That would “Interfere with collaboration”.
Also, I’m pretty sure you can feel the noise in an open office design without being able to hear it.
Ya I wear my headphones when I can still not enough.
Noise canceling?
The “in the ear” headphones don’t block enough ambient noise. Some rockin’ 1970s style big ear muff headphones would be a start, while modern noise canceling would be preferred.
I just got some Peltor sport 10’s from a sale and they are creepily effective. Moreso than any of my other earpro.
I have a pair of Audio Technica monitor headphones that block more sound than the actual noise cancelling headphones I owned.
I’m using some bottom-of-the-barrel Monoprice headphones. They do a pretty good job muffling the office noise. I went cheap because a few years ago there was a rash of headphone thefts going on – cleaning staff apparently.
Hrmm… there is an upside to having the cleaning staff working during the workday. (as a “cost cutting” measure, the state has the janitorial staff work during the same hours as everyone else, disrupting everyone as they come through emptying trash and vacuuming cubes. It’s batty)
No “white-noise” that makes it sound like you’re working under a waterfall?
Nope nothing but exposed ceiling to amplify the sound. I’m looking for a new job as I type this.
I suspect you are not alone, and some managers will wonder at the “Mysterious” jump in turnover over the next year.
I feel for you. I worked at a newspaper that had an open floor plan. Only senior editor & publisher had walls to their office. It made me paranoid, as everyone watched me do my job.
When I worked for State Street Bank, they had us at spare trading-floor workstations – one long desktop, shoulder to shoulder.
One of the many reasons that job sucked (though we moved to cubes a few months after I started).
When I was last in a seat in a high traffic location where everyone passing by could see what was on my screen, I became a nervous wreck, with anxiety ratcheting up every time someone walked past, regardless of what I was working on. It sounds silly, but I feel like anyone who can see my monitors is going to pass judgement, even if it’s just got my e-mail and a stack of ssh sessions open. So I was a complete wreck merely being in a high-traffic spot. I couldn’t take it any more, and when another unit kicked up from our cubes (happens a lot to my unit) I insisted on taking a more isolated spot that didn’t have as much foot traffic. My mental health improved dramatically within the first week.
I absolutely dread the thought of being in the middle of an open plan.
I’ve been set up in “intern alley” at a desk with a monitor facing one of the heavier trafficked corridors in the office. The paranoia is real.
Last place I worked, rear view mirrors on the (then tube) monitors were popular.
I have often found that the people that want the meat markets and the lack of privacy they cause are the asshats in private offices that feel superior to the plebes actually doing the work on the floor. Petty fucking douchebags.
I’d be happy just to have a door.
Apparently there’s a dire door shortage in New York State, and thye must be reserved for agency bigwigs.
Glossy black bevels.
I cannot work when people are watching me. Like I can’t type, can’t really think, the works. I can talk or give a presentation or whatever, but not actual work. I’ve taken to telling recruiters that if they want to submit me for a position check if they want me to do a live coding exercise during the interview. If they do, don’t bother. I’m happy to do a test project, or walk through sample code, or even do some whiteboarding pseudo-code type stuff, but I’m not typing for an audience.
What is the Work From Home policy for your office?
Every place I’ve been that has an open office layout ended up in a spike in people working from home. Eventually almost everyone is working from home.
My official “Works From Home” status started because it was so damn loud in the office – it’s a bad sign if you need to slap on the noise cancelling headphones as soon as you got there.
We weren’t even “open” – 5′ cubicles – but people are noisy; TBF, a lot of that was the networking guys next to us, shouting on the phone to people in noisy datacenters.
I can as needed, but my boss prefers me in the office as much as possible, since I work at HQ and can be the face of the group.
LOL. But your boss isn’t in the office and sitting in that new open pit of collaboration is he?
I imagine the open pit looking like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gHDEX-QfFI
That is way better than what poor LJW is enduring. I’m sure he’d find himself in HR lickety-split if he rammed the head of his coworker into a wall for sniffling the same gob of snot back up his nose for the 10,000th time that morning.
Amen.
You should ask him if your job is to shmooze and look pretty or get work done?
I’ve always felt my job is to make life easier for my boss. Being the token team member at a HQ location, it probably is a bit more schmooze than remote.
Good – it was meant to be.
Obama Took Hillary’s Loss as a “Personal Insult;”
“You mean I might actually face trial for the crimes I committed?”
Don’t be silly. Could you picture the shear meltdown the left would have, despite any and all evidence of malfeasance that could be provided?
All 54% of them (or whatever the election results were). I mean how much of a narcissist (fool) do you have to be to believe that the “American people” are on your side? At least something finally pierced that idiotic brain of his.
” was in safe hands” Then he should have told Biden to tell the voters that Beau wanted Dad to be president and together they should have told the DNC that it was Joe’s turn and not Hillary ‘s.
Good. Fuck that narcissist.
Didn’t the Mayor of L.A. recently unveil a street named in honor of Barry saying he’s among ‘the greatest Presidents in history’?
Even as it’s becoming more and more clear he did spy on Trump and the American people; that he used the full force of agencies against an elected official and citizens.
They haven’t shut up about McCarthy and Nixon but think this is nothing to see?
He spent 8 years doing everything he could to fuck the American people and is now shocked that they ‘turned on him’?
Huh. What a maroon.
This guy is a classical narcissist. The left is really angry at the world, because they loved Obama’s rule by the pen – violating the whole way government was supposed to work – but hate the fact that since they couldn’t keep the election they thought they had rigged for Hillary, Trump has undone all the Obama rule by the pen era shit with his pen. Fuck Obama and Clinton both.
And the thing that drives me into a blind rage is when some disingenuous Obama-appointee judge rules that Trump can’t undo an Obama executive order with his own executive order.
That is the type of ruling that should be ignored. Point to the Constitution and tell the judge to fuck off because anything done by executive order can be undone by executive order.
Are you ready for the Summer of Biden?
How the former Vice President’s talent for gaffes might help him win
I don’t think senile and oafish trumps mean and dumb.
Biden isnt going to win. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the useless R’s win back the house.
Seriously, I am looking at the stupid shit the team blue candidates say on a daily basis, and wonder how the fuck the people that would vote for them simply don’t go “Is this the best the religion of envy and woke shaming can produce?” These fuckers make Dan Quayle look like he was a super genius. If it was just dishonesty, I would get it, but it goes into the realm of “How much really dumb shit can I say without the people that will vote for me having to do a double take”.
“They seem nice”. There’s a lot of emotionally-driving voting, not that much listening to what anyone’s saying.
Slumbrew – Spurs survived epic pants-shitting…or will they come up with their biggest collapse yet?
As someone on Twitter pointed out ‘Spurs lose 0-4, Arsenal wins 5-0’ would be unprecedented but not unthinkable.
That’d be peak Spursy.
Which happened recently, they lost to Newcastle 5-1 on the last weekend and Arsenal won 4-0 that same day.
Arsenal just have to match the GD because then they would win on GF.
Although Everton away are averaging less than 1.5/game.
Burnley at home concede less than 2.
And, if Arsenal win on Thursday I suspect they’ll play a weaker squad on Sunday.
That’s the Joe “put you back in chains” Biden I know.
https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-joe-biden-south-carolina-democratic-presidential-candidates-20190504-story.html
The sad thing is that there are people who believe this because he said it. Despite knowing that it’s not true from experience.
Identity politics has to work if these fuckers keep doing more of it…
“You’ve got Jim Crow sneaking back in,” he said, referring to the era before the civil rights movement. “You know what happens when you have an equal right to vote? They lose.”
Fuck. Off. You senile twit.
So Mrs. Animal and I saw Avengers: Endgame yesterday. A fun movie and a decent wrap-up for the twenty-some films of the MCU to date; but the best part was the drive home, when we concocted and planned the alternate STEVE SMITH ending.
People in other cars at stoplights were probably wondering what the hell we were laughing about.
How far back into the series would I have to go to make sense of it? The last movies I saw were the first Avengers movie and GotG.
I doubt you’d need to see any – just read 40 years of comic books, then realize they’re not going to follow the original conclusion of the infinity gauntlet plotline because it involved characters never used in the movies, since those that were involved in the movies had all died by that point.
Hey! They kept Nebula as being important!
I haven’t watched a marvel movie since Iron Man, so I don’t know exactly who made an appearance, but some of the more… odd characters would have been remarked upon.
Warren Buffett says the US won’t ‘go into socialism in 2020, or 2040, or 2060’
Should be modified to “a card-carrying crony capitalist”
Fascism-light – a.k.a crony capitalism, where government picks the winners & losers – is not socialism accoring to this tool, I guess.
Proof that Nazis aren’t socialists?
Hang on a second.
THERE ARE CAPITALIST CARDS!??!
There is also a secret handshake.
Not available for Canadians.
I am leaving work at mid-day to go to convenient care and get this @#$% fixed.

I think we all knew this was coming. George Washington is done….

First president of the country just wasn’t woke enough.
He was a HONKEY, wore a WIG, and he had on shoes with HEELS!
Russian. Always with the Russians…
We all knew it was coming. It’ll be interesting to see what the final straw is and the events that follow.
I keep waiting for the backlash, but it never seems to come.
Probably because there is no organized conservative or libertarian movement to take action. For a brief moment, the Tea Party may have had enough coordination to take on this nonsense locally, but it appears to have atomized.
How do these assholes survive opening their wallets? Do they start literally shaking every time they pull out a dollar bill?
They, like, use plastic, duh.
Or,
“Like, what’s a dollar bill?”
/valley millenial.
So these tyrants will stay far away from the levers of power in Washington D.C., right?
A Kinder, Gentler Gulag
“Sunkara envisions a socialist America that decides, democratically”
So 51 wolves telling 49 sheep what is for dinner, right?
It blows my mind that they can’t see how evil this is.
The second they’d run a business they’d do precisely exactly the opposite of what they preach.
Because reality hits you like a bitch and you suddenly find yourself confronted and dealing with the endless and intricate and nuance calculus that is human virtues and vices.
What makes you think they cant see it?
“Imposing more democracy on people than they’d prefer is, among other drawbacks, undemocratic.”
Fantastic.
I wonder what a venn diagram of socialists and the people in corporations who schedule meetings just for the sake of having a meeting would be?
My gut tells me that it would be very high. Those assholes who think that meetings “help” are the exact same people who would think that the only reason everyone isn’t rich is because not enough information is being shared.
I dunno. Let’s start a task force to investigate. I added the a weekly meeting to your schedule for Fridays at 5:30am to accommodate our European participants.
Also, fuck Cisco’s follow the sun strategy so overnight support coverage is some French accented Belgie.
Gusty calling tech support
Europe is only 6 hours off and I’m a morning person, so those meetings didn’t bother me too much. Now dealing with India and the offshore teams there is another story.
The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality
They always hand-wave away the question of why inequality is inherently bad, in and of itself. Bill Gate’s billions have no impact on me.
It’s almost as if they’re driven by envy and greed.
I got a deeply offended look from somebody who was incredulous that I’d even ask that (but nonetheless couldn’t explain why). It’s absolutely an article of faith. Which is fine, we’re all beholden to beliefs we carry in our bones even if we can’t articulate the reasons why. But maybe don’t be so openly contemptuous of people who don’t share yours if you’re not ready to back them up with logic.
/still going to be openly contemptuous of people pining for socialism
I own a bunch of my former emplyeer’s stock – between the 401k and discounted employee stock purchase plan. But I doubt that’s what he’s talking about.
Maybe prohibit initial public offerings? So a start-up can’t ever go public? But that’s why there are start-ups, and most of them would stop growing without a cash infusion and some professional management.
What Sunkara seems to be trying to grapple with is the Socialist Calculation Problem. Good for him for at least acknowledging it, I guess. I don’t think his scheme still does much to resolve it, though. You still don’t have a means to evaluate the relative value of of a whole bunch of production inputs and outputs. So, unless the resulting price system reverts to something much more resembling mercantilism (not even capitalism, since the players are now in bed with the government) than any recognizable form of socialism, the economic actors still don’t have a means for evaluating different choices.
It’s all bullshit. Don’t waste your time trying to parse what they are saying or the schemes they come up with. They always do the same thing…destroy any checks on their power, use any means necessary to disempower and crush the people, set themselves up as a totalitarian dictator.
They do it every time and every time you hear someone talking social justice, equality, fairness etc the end goal is the same.
They are nothing if not mendacious.
Ah, but comrade, don’t you see? Those other times, it was just that the right apparatchiks weren’t in charge!
The problem is more fundamental than intentions. Even if a team of angels with the most noble intentions tried to run this, it still wouldn’t work.
You would think people would be able to overcome their own jealousy and realize this, but I guess human nature is so fucked up that so many people would accept to be made to live in misery themselves as long as that also happens to their neighbors.
“right apparatchiks weren’t in charge!”
They are, of course, correct. The “right apparatchiks” would have liquidated every last liberty loving person who refused to become a “new Soviet man.” All the commie/socialist countries never carried this out and ultimately failed and that’s why there’s never been a real socialist state.
The people who sweep floors and drive forklifts should be making business decisions, not the people who have training and experience in running a business. What could possibly go wrong?
C’mon Kev! Everyone knows that there really is no difference between the CEO and the night janitor. That CEO only got the job because of his unearned privilege.
But don’t get me started on forklift drivers though.
Stupid Nazi, forgot to put the forks through the pallet
The ideals of Socialism / Communism etc always suffer from the human component. Such a form of government will always have the freeloaders, the bloc that actively hates the system and will strive to overturn in, the incompetent, and, most importantly of all, cronyism.
“Democratic Socialism” is an attempt to water down the worst command economy aspects of it, a weak capitalism fused with worker ownership. But, like most plans or systems, it will fail with contact with reality. For example: Will Democratic Socialism really let an unsuccessful company fail? Or, more likely, will it be propped up with more government cash like GM? All to save worker jobs.
From Wikipedia:
“Sunkara credited his politicization to his reading as a teenager: from George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm he developed an interest in Leon Trotsky, reading his autobiography and Isaac Deutscher’s three-volume biography…”
He literally thought it was an instruction manual.
Just… wow.
That’s…neat. That’s like someone watching Schindler’s List and thinking, “It’s disgusting how someone could be so corrupt, making up jobs that don’t exist, falsifying reports.”
I wonder if they realize how problematic worker owned collectives are.
So I work for the collective, can I quit my job and go work somewhere else? What happens to my ownership stake? Do I just lose it or are they forced to refund it’s current value to me. How does my replacement acquire his stake in the company? Does he have to buy his way in or does he just get it for free? What about if I misbehave on the job? Can they fire me? I am an owner after all. What if I am popular with a large voting block in the company, does that mean I can get away with whatever I want without fear of repercussions?
This worker owned collective thing is no where near as democratic as they like to claim it is and it introduces as many or more problems as it solves.
IOW, fascism.
Goddammit woman, if you’re going to refuse to hire a dude because he’s black, don’t fucking say it out loud to other people!
SLD: Private companies should be able to do this (though we should have the right to shun them out of business for doing so). The government, however, can’t discriminate.
SLD2: There should be fewer government positions so the government has less of a chance of doing this.
If you brain really does have those thoughts, a really good filter between it and her mouth is required.
Is that the town that time forgot?!
WHY ARE YOU SUCH AN ELITIST?!?!?
Don’t be jelly.
The most charitable interpretation is she thinks those other racists in the town couldn’t handle having a black city administrator.
That doesn’t really help.
Holy shit, really?
Dude went on record with that?
Somebody hasn’t actually read the New Testament.
Or the old.
Yikes.
I didn’t read down that far.
That town seems nice.
It also seems like Dude hasn’t picked up a bible.
Interracial marriages are all over the place…the entire book of Ruth is dedicated to celebrating one.
Ruth was David’s great grandmother. Boaz her husband was the son of a prostitute with a heart of gold (and that was also an interracial marriage).
It’s the same with the constitution as well as the Bible – people just assume anything they dislike is prohibited, and anything they really like is required.
Numbers 12
The land of Kush is what is now known as Southern Egypt and Sudan. When Moses’s brother and sister gave him shit for marrying a black woman, God gave Miriam leprosy.
I don’t think God’s view on interracial marriage could be much clearer.
One of my favorite themes in the early books is God having to constantly remind the Israelites that they’re not in charge. I forget where and the exact phrasing, but there’s this bit where he says something kind of catty to the effect of, “If you want to go around deciding what’s right and wrong according to whatever you think at the time, fine, but don’t come cryin’ to me when the boils start.”
Jesus told slaves to obey their masters, so I guess…..
Uh….could you point us to the part of christianity that your belief is founded on? You know, just for fun.

Alien III An Audible Original Drama
oooh – that has to better than the weird WTF were they thinking Alien^3
And if its not, the price is right.
the penal colony dog Alien movie? i liked that one. gritty, raw, dark. but not the ending. the end was campy garbage. she should’ve just jumped like a normal person into the molten metal instead of the sacrificial mother pose.
Michael Biehn makes every movie better. Prove me wrong.
Why would I even try? Dude killed a Terminator while wearing no underwear!
He went commando on that terminator…
Can’t, because you’re right.
This is how you do woke. I am sure these “companies” will suddenly feel obligated to donate a whole fucking truckload of money to team blue campaign coffers, and especially Newsom’s personal funds….
It is to laugh.
Do you think revelations like this will disuade the people still peddling the “free shit for votes” crap?
No, buying votes works and they don’t care about actually improving lives.
On the fence about this. As stupid and illogical as I think drilling regs typically are, the more local control and decentralization on almost any issue, the better.
https://www.denverpost.com/2019/05/06/colorado-oil-and-gas-local-regulations-181/
Yeah, a patch work of nannies and nimbys will make doing business easier.
Does it matter if it will make business easier?
The right thing to do is not necessarily pro business

Right? I bet he found a nice little nasty-gram from Nancy on his phone after that. She’s the only one in that circus that seems to get that the jig is up and it’s time to STFU. And “move on”.
“He added, “Here’s what I say, we’re confronting a constitutional crisis as I speak to you. As I look the people of America in the eye, I’m telling you, we have a constitutional crisis. the chief executive office of the president of the United States refuses to comply with subpoenas and says he will order others to do so, this creates a constitutional crisis””
Constitutional Crisis is one they have said a lot, to rationalize their coup afternoon attempts.
That being said, I’m not familiar with subpoenas and Congress. I thought presidents snubbed Congress all the time.
I thought presidents snubbed Congress all the time.
Obama certainly did, but that was okay.
The crisis for them is that the Constitution ostensibly prevents their wannabe totalitarianism.
“We must impeach this president. If you don’t, it’s not the soul of the nation that will be at risk only, it is the soul of the Congress that’s at risk. Congress has a duty, a responsibility and obligation that only it can fulfill. No one else can no. No other entity can. It is Congress that will have to act. If we put people above party, we’ll act properly. But if we allow a party to be above principle, we will not. If we allow political expediency to trump moral imperative, we will have created a shameful situation that this Congress that will never live down, history won’t be kind to us. We must impeach him.”
My copy of the Constitution doesn’t say anything about impeaching the president just because you don’t like him and he might get re-elected.
“It’s not like we’ve been avoiding all responsibilities for the last few decades or anything.”

Top of the line mild. they knew how to drink in the 1860s.
60 IBUs is high, but in a 10.3% ABV beer that will still be leaning towards malty. Good balance.
Wow. That’s one hell of a mild.
Re: The Socialism Calculation Problem mentioned above.
Some, including Krugman, have claimed that with modern computing that isn’t a problem anymore.
I call bullshit.
I want someone to tell me how a computer would have determined the right time to start craft beer breweries?
Would it have told New Albion to start up in 1976? Maybe not, considered it failed 6 years later, but without it, we don’t get Sierra Nevada.
A computer has no better predictive capacity than the people who programmed it, and will never be able to decide “It’s time to innovate something outside the known parameters, and this is it”
>> The Socialism Calculation Problem
I’ve seen Amazon as being offered as the proof that the computational problem has been solved. Er…
Hell, just look at the breweries that are now pulling back from their gung ho expansion a couple of years ago. I’m thinking we’re going to have one of the national craft breweries go under (or sell to AB-InBev) in the next couple of years.
I will guess….Goose Island! Oh wait, that already happened.
Ummm…yeah, there will be another big one sell out.
If I was being forced to guess who, I’d lean towards Stone or New Belgium.
Some, including Krugman, have claimed that with modern computing that isn’t a problem anymore.
Then some, including Krugman, are fucking morons who have no fucking clue of what the Calculation Problem is.
The Calculation Problem isn’t about having the intelligence or the computational power to make optimal decisions. It was never about that. It’s about having the underlying data to compute with. Unless Paul Krugman is going to try to pretend that modern computing makes him Marvin the Mindreader, modern computing doesn’t do a damned thing to solve the information problem.
I’m not sure if Krugman really is that stupid or if he just understands that his audience is economic ignoramuses.
Correct, and well put. But even Marvin the Mindreader can’t solve the problem, because the data just doesn’t exist yet. Preference is a process, not a static thing. A person doesn’t know what they want until they have an offer in a specific context. (IE you don’t know if you want a Jeep until you know the price, know what a “jeep” is, and know if it fits into your current lifestyle – which is the synthesis of places you want to drive, the price of gas, parking, insurance, etc etc etc change any one of those things and your preferences change)
Fair point. But, I’d suggest that, in some magical world where you could read people’s minds, you could, adjust production schedules instantaneously to evolving preferences. Yeah, that’s absolute bullshit. But, then, so is reading people’s minds.
But its not *evolving* preferences that the market seeks out. It is the generation of *new ideas* that a capitol E Entrepreneur generates sui generis.
Steve Jobs was monomaniacal on slick animations in a smooth package, to the point of making the inside of a phone aesthetically pleasing. This was not a product of reaction to evolving preferences. He was convinced that if-he-built-it-you-will-want-it. And he was right. The focus on design aesthetics was a sea-change in the market driven by the irrational bet of one insanely focused monomaniac.
Mind reading was no only not necessary for this bet, it wouldn’t have even helped. Because, deep down, Steve Jobs knew *you were wrong* when you thought you didn’t care about a beautiful phone. And he was right and the consumer was wrong.
Which confuses me, because real phones have been harder and harder to come by as these glass-fronted spying tools keep getting ever more invasive in market share. I don’t know why people buy them.
FOMO. And I’m sure there are people who genuinely see some value and don’t care about the privacy. But I suspect most people buy new phones that do more of the same things they don’t use on their current phones because they feel like it’s just going to be somehow better and more fun and stuff like that.
A person doesn’t know what they want until they‘re edified by their vastly better-informed cultural and intellectual elites.
You nailed it. Data may show a new light transit line will attract 10,000 riders per day and only cost $2 million per mile to build but I wouldn’t count on even 5,000 showing up and $5 million per mile to build. People lie, contractors and unions rent seek, pols respond to contributions, etc. etc. How does “the data” factor this in?
Don Trump puts up an unneeded casino and it goes bust? Well he loses. Memphis pols put up a failing rail line and the pols get a victory parade because they”tried” even if most of the taxpayers got soaked.
To be fair, it was Hayeks fault for shifting to a computation/information problem
This is a man who idolizes the protagonist of the Foundation novels. Completely unsurprising.
There’s a hilarious video game called Tropico 6 that I have been messing around with.
Historically it’s a communism/banana republic simulator. Even with perfect data on everyone and perfect controls it’s difficult, btw. Really shows why central planning is impossible.
But it’s fun. And hilarious.
But there’s an allusion to this idea in one of the missions in the new game.
A computer determines what policies to enact and such. However, the computer — of course — sucks, goes haywire, and has to be shutdown. I enjoyed it.
I tried the prerelease demo, it was the same as Tropico 5, which was the same as Tropico 4, which was the same as Tropic 3…
I guess they’re consistant, but I didn’t actually buy 6. I guess it’s like the sports games where they do graphical updates and tweaks around the edges. How’s Penultimo doing?
I haven’t planned in awhile so it was fresh for me. Don’t know if I did Tropico 5.
Pretty good graphics, though.
played not planned.
Penultimo is the same as always.
I really don’t like the change of tone since Tropico 4. Tropico 1 played things straight – the humor came from the absurdity of the inherent corruption in 3rd World big man politics. After the change in studio, the message of Tropico 4+ is “Oh, these wacky personalities!” That is, socialism would work if it wasn’t for El Presidente’s ego.
Yeah there’s some truth to that.
Honestly, if I sheltered myself from all entertainment that thought that, way I wouldn’t be that entertained though. So pervasive.
It would be a lot of fun to get a bunch of glibs together and play Junta!

“Men Have No Friends and Women Bear the Burden
Toxic masculinity—and the persistent idea that feelings are a “female thing”—has left a generation of straight men stranded on emotionally-stunted island, unable to forge intimate relationships with other men. It’s women who are paying the price. ”

https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/features/a27259689/toxic-masculinity-male-friendships-emotional-labor-men-rely-on-women/
Sure, let’s take all the things men have been doing together since the beginning of time (sports, outdoor stuff, drinking, etc.), label it “toxic masculinity”, do everything we can to discourage it, then wonder why men don’t have friends. (slaps forehead)
Has any wife not insisted on a purge of one’s pre-marital friends within the 1st year of marriage?
This is what I was coming here to say. I guarantee you that the same women mewling in the article about how put-upon they are because their husband/boyfriend has few friends also did everything they could to sabotage his friendships with men who they didn’t approve, and who would bitch if 95% of her waking hours weren’t spent with the husband/boyfriend.
If it wasn’t bitching about the friends, it was bitching about how “we’re losing our connection” or “you’re never home” or ” our relationship is so strained”.
You know you have a good friendship with a guy if your wife hates him and his wife hates you. Mostly because every time the two of you get together you both have gobs of fun.
Both women are worried that one of these times you might realize how much happier you’d be if we never went home. Just got a bachelor pad instead. Then only drop by the old homestead for booty calls.
Tough call, because mine knew most of my friends beforehand and her opinion hasn’t really changed of them. On the other hand, maybe it was a soft coup; she hung out all the time and systematically berated each of them for one thing or another until only the most resilient remained.
What an absolute crock.
1) men don’t need the same size of social network as women
2)many common men’s spaces have been gentrified and pushed out of the middle class budget
3) a large number of men’s social activities have been actively discouraged over the past 30 years
4) men are expected to work + care for children these days, reducing the time available to socialize. Men are often expected to be co-primary if not the primary caregiver during non-work hours.
5) many men socialize through group activities such as video games.
2 and 4 are the main reasons I don’t have many/any close friends.
Mostly this. But I think I disagree on 1) a little bit. Men need a wider, shallower social network, while women need a smaller, deeper social network, generally speaking. This leads to very different social organizations, and lately men have been taken out of the wide/shallow organizations and into smaller/deepers ones as they 1) have to tag along with the women 2) as society forms smaller/deeper interest groups
Also – ABRAK or Always Be Reading Arnold Kling.
Yep, I was a bit clumsy with 1). I meant that men don’t need as many deep, close friends, which shows in 5).
That’s interesting. I’d have argued for the original understanding of #1 based on my own experience. I have maybe two, three close friends and then several acquaintances. My social network has thinned out lately but even at its greatest extent I think it was safe to say I had two, maybe three friends who were close friends, along with a number of friends who…not that they weren’t friends, per se, but that the extent of our connection was hanging out in the same places and doing the same stuff.
Then again, and maybe this goes to your point, I’ve never been one to need a confidante, generally, so I think by that measure there are more people who count me as one of their close friends than vice versa. By that metric, I have many more people who I can call to get a beer than my wife, while the number of people I’d call to unload some deeply personal information (if I even felt the need) is much, much lower than hers.
You are thinking a little too narrowly if you are thinking of beer-drinking-buddies only.
Who would would you call if you needed someone to look at your plumbing but didn’t want to pay a plumber?
Who would would you call if you wanted to get in touch with your small-town mayor or city council member?
Who would would you call if you had to pick up a heavy piece of furniture from Craigslist but don’t have a truck?
Who would you call if you needed to find a family lawyer to help you with a living will or regular will.
There’s a good chance you have a different “guy” for each of those things. And there’s a good chance you haven’t hung out with them in the last year. But maybe you’ve seen them at work or church or a kid’s function or whatever.
Blamo, there’s your wide, shallow social network.
Funny, most of those people are in-laws for me. Going by those standards, then sure, I’ve got an enormous social network of acquaintances.
Wonder how far you could trace this back.
Not in absolute years, but in how far back in a kid’s development. For example, “play dates” now are supervised co-ed shit. Boys are thrown into co-ed groups and told to play together. That almost always means girl games.
No longer are kids thrown out the front door to go play on their own and in groups of their own choosing. And by that, I mean most kids will want to play with kids of the same sex. Boys will play war, cops & robbers, cowboys & indians, build forts, punch each other etc. Girls will play completely different games.
I guess we’ve licked that whole cooties thing.
The intro segment of The Patriot is two boys doing really typically boy stuff in the typically benignly homicidal way of boys free of immediate supervision and full of sugar. They’re doing donuts on dirtbikes, shooting rifles, breaking glass bottles with slingshots, running around like lunatics, all the usual stuff. And as I watched it I was a little surprised to find myself a little shocked, even put off by it. And I’m a kid who would blow his allowance at the local surplus store on camo, set traps around the yard for…I don’t know, whatever would be stupid enough to walk into them, and hide in a tree with a sharpened stick while I snorted pinches of snuff I’d stolen from the local drugstore until I got sick. I’m not advocating young boys be sent into the woods with a pack of cigarettes and a pocket knife until the streetlights come on…except, on the balance, maybe I am. I think for whatever risks I faced running around the neighborhood being a delinquent I learned a lot more about how to interact with the world without filtering everything through a parent.
Sounds a lot like my childhood – ran in packs with the neighbor kids and got into a bunch of trouble. We handled issues among ourselves without running to a parent. It was part Huck Finn and part Lord of the Flies.
Any given day in the late 80s would have horrified parents today, I think. I’d spend hours digging through my grandfather’s garage or shed looking for sharp, rusty tools or God knows what I thought looked interesting. We’d chase each other through the woods with BB guns and fireworks. We built forts and dug tunnels, skateboarded down huge hills past oncoming traffic, all kinds of stuff. It was a good childhood. And yeah, it was like a pack of boys who just happened to run into each other and then kept doing it every day. We had our own sort of rough justice to enforce standards within our group, and we’d unite to fend off the older kids. And nobody really taught us to do that or encouraged us to jump over stuff with our bikes or to not worry about skinned knees, it just was how we worked.
Now, with my daughter, again, through no influence from us that I can tell, she decided early on that she loved pink, purple, being a princess, and has panic attacks when she sees an ant. She’s obsessed with babies and loves to wear dresses. She does enjoy a good game of catch, though, and she’s a climber, but rough-and-tumble she ain’t.

A late OT: I saw my mom in the hospital yesterday and she seemed 90% back to normal. So I went home feeling good that the crisis was over.
And then, later that evening, she went right back into paranoid mode where my dad had to calm her down. Shouting and thinking that the staff is out to get her.
And then back to lucidity… and then back to paranoid mode… doctors saying withdrawal from the anxiety meds so they’re keeping her for another night again.
My mother went through the whole Alzheimer’s/dementia thing (I still don’t know the difference) for several years before she died last year. When my father died, it became evident that he had run the whole show for a while, and when we tried to move her from the four-bedroom home to assisted living, she raged. Then, while in assisted living, she cooked up all sorts of paranoid delusions about various of the siblings stealing stuff from her (cars she didn’t own, etc.), running international theft rings, you name it. When we moved her from one facility to another after a year or so, her delusions transitioned from angry ones to happy ones, and she became a pleasure to be around. She would talk as if she had to get off to a college class, but a few moments later would recall something from way-back-when with crystal clarity. That’s what you hope for. I hope it goes well for you and I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this. It’s probably wrecking your dad.
