Today has just been.. meh. Maybe it will pick up later this afternoon as I take my kids to their first BJJ lesson. I can tell you that the almost 4 year old has a pretty decent idea of how to execute a rear choke, even if his technique could use a little brushup. Hopefully, they won’t practice on each other too much. Or, whatever. I’ve got an heir and a spare. Which one is which they can fight it out over.
Oh great, I was just at Quest for some bloodwork today. Glad I could also give the blackhats my credit card information as well. Also, I’m pretty sure I saw the tech type my CVV number into their payment system, which, I don’t believe the retailer is supposed to see, use, or maintain. So, I probably won’t even be able to dispute any charges. I didn’t say anything because she hadn’t stuck me yet. Be polite to the lady who is going to exanguinate you, right?
Why I would never take up motorcycle riding around here. Vehicle-motorcycle homicides in the Tampa Bay area have to rival Chicago murders.

The boys from that little band rock some Germans today in music.
Meh.
NNow I feel like I need oleo for my bunghole.
TP?
“first BJJ lesson”
WHAT KIND OF FATHER ARE YOU!?!?…. oh, there’s another “J” there.
Carry on.
I just figured the extra j stood for jizz.
I thought it was for Jr.
There is nothing in that paragraph that would make me think we are wrong for thinking it is some special BJ lesson. “rear choke”, “practice on each other”, Uffda Brett, this is how you get caught. You gotta keep that shit on the down low.
I drank for the first time in over a year on Saturday out watching the Champions League Final.
I *really* should not have done that. Alcohol does not mix well with anti-anxiety meds and antidepresants.

Yeah, but you feel great the next day.

IDK, they give amphetamines to hyper active kids and they seem okay.
Except for the stunted growth.
That’s a feature. The fit in in the mines more easily.
If Tottenham would have won, I’d have done the same thing.
Fif!
Well if they wanted stuff done right, they wouldn’t have laid off a bunch of us a couple of months ago.

That’s some fine editing there, Lou.
Union editor.
Ha!
No, it was a collective effort.
It was very important you got that part.
Isn’t Hicks the guy that lobbied hard for Cal to increase its minimum wage and immediately upon passage lobbied just as hard for unions to be exempt from the minimum wage laws he had just helped to pass?

But some left-leaning activists are worried that Hicks’ centrist pitch would chafe against their goals.
“I am deeply afraid that Rusty will shiv us in the back on climate,” said RL Miller, chairwoman of the party’s Environmental Caucus, who spent the weekend pressing presidential candidates to sign a pledge that they wouldn’t take campaign money from oil companies.

I got into China with none of this crap*. Ponder that one.
*Of course, it was almost 20 years ago.
I got into China with none of that ten years ago. Anyone more recent?

Eh. They probably already know.
Twenty years ago, there was no social media.

Hell, I could have told them that for free. It’s all the sugar people dump in coffee that is bad.
It can mess up you heart’s timing.
I had some PVCs at my last physical, and they told me to come back without caffeine.
Did it work?
Yup.
PVCs, or PACs?
Pre ventricular contractions.
Yeah, I’ll disagree with that. Too much caffiene trips my poor heart out.
I’m the same. A twenty once cup in the morning and that’s all. Anything more and I get weird heart rhythms and become clammy and anxious. Energy drinks are an absolute no go.

lucky you, Brett. my kids never really took to grapple-in-pajama. you’d think they’d love it for all the fighting they do at home.
Labor leader Rusty Hicks was elected the next chairman of the California Democratic Party, a win cemented by support from many elected officials and most of the state’s major labor organizations, who hope he can steer the party out of an internal crisis in time for the 2020 elections.
Nothing steers you out of an internal crisis like a good purge of the unbelievers. Be resolute, Comrades!
What’s the internal crisis? Don’t they control the government, and have tweaked the election process to make sure that doesn’t change?
The “internal crisis” is they weren’t 110% in lockstep for a millisecond.
I’ll have to change my expression “fuck you with a rusty chainsaw” to “fuck you with a rusty hicks”.
OT: I’m usually a big fan of Quillette; but this is such a steaming pile of nanny state garbage that I’d think I was reading Salon.
https://quillette.com/2019/05/31/how-limbic-capitalism-preys-on-our-addicted-brains/
My favorite comment:
“The only thing that would happen if you got rid of the “nanny state” is that people would be “nannied” by their extended family instead, which is what always happened historically. You libertarians and your atomized individualist fantasy-land are always so exhausting.”
No. My family would never put up with that shit. And neither would I.
So, being influenced by people who care about you and have a vested interest in your well-being is somehow worse than being coerced by an omnipotent bureaucracy and thrown in a cage.
Got it.
My family’s nannying doesn’t come with a gun to my head.
Well la di dal. Look who has a normal family.
They’re doing it wrong.
If I sat around playing video games all day while my family paid for it, there might not be a gun to the head, but there would definitely be a boot to the ass.
Nannying comes in many forms.
They’re going to clean up his messes and take care of him just like a nanny would?
i want to completely like this comment but is it correct? does dependency have to include that the addicted will die if they go cold turkey?
…addiction is a real thing, not just “something you do and have difficulty finding the motivation to stop”. Opiates, alcohol, and certain other substances are addictive not only because they produce intense pleasure, but because if you try to stop taking them after having consumed them in sufficient quantity for long enough, you can become severely ill or even die. You need medical help to stop taking them safely. Also, merely taking them in those quantities can kill you in the meantime.
Playing too many video games and shopping or gambling too much can cause you severe financial or social problems, but all it takes to stop is some willpower; and once you stop you have stopped, there is no imminent danger of death. The improvement in your life is immediate. Everyone has bad habits, really.
Heroin withdrawal will not kill you, it’s just intensely painful.
Barbiturate and alcohol withdrawal, OTOH, can kill you.
Though I do tend to agree with his general point that “withdrawal” from video games is not on the same level as heroin withdrawal.
Severe alcohol and opioid withdrawal can cause death, but that’s very rare; usually when someone will overdose well before they get to a point of chemical dependency so severe that withdrawal becomes potentially fatal without medical intervention. Nicotine withdrawal, while a right proper bitch, is not medically significant. At least to the smoker trying to quit, but annoying bystanders could be at risk.
Does he think this is groundbreaking or something? Games are designed to be fun and addictive. News at 11.
I prefer Lambic Capitalism.
Rusty Hicks?
not only a white guy but with a name like that obviously a racisssssssss
Hicks’ election is considered a victory for many in the party establishment, particularly elected officials who had expressed reservations about Ellis’ platform. Her support of publicly financed elections raised concerns among leaders that she would further limit corporate donors or ban them altogether, a move that could handicap the party financially.
team infighting?
It was a deflating loss for supporters of Ellis, whose campaign had centered on driving a more progressive agenda to inspire women, people of color and younger voters.
By ONE letter he coulda been Rusty Dicks.
my mind jumped to Busty! damn you, Q, and your mental conditioning.
Unhealthy corrosion of a pristine mind by Q’stortion.

Husky Dicks means……..

I know a guy who was named Rusty (on his birth certificate and everything) by his redneck parents. He married a very proper English woman. All his in-laws refuse to call him Rusty. They call him Russel instead.
Sounds like a movie I may have seen.
Hicks: I don’t believe in me. I believe in we.
Reeeeee!!
Until some of we start objecting to what we are doing too strongly. Then we are taken out to a field by the other we and we are never seen again.
Hooray for we.
Must be opposite day because I’m guessing this fucker only believes in himself.
No, no, no. I’m sure Hicks will take his turn cleaning up the bathroom in the office because “we” all have to do our fair share and no one is more important than any other person.
The new visa application forms list a number of social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and require the applicant to provide any account names they may have had on them over the previous five years.

Somehow it’s considered completely normal to demand any and all sensitive information from foreign nationals who want to visit the U.S.A. legally.
That depends on how they arrive.
That was exactly the point I was trying to make.
Speaking to supporters at the W Hotel in downtown San Francisco, Hicks, a Texas native and Afghanistan war veteran, said he was “reporting for duty.”
Party of the little guy.
That guy Hicks seems to really have his head screwed on straight.

I’m confused, though, about the part where he can avoid paying legal fees by filing something with the court. Doesn’t his lawyer have anything to say about it?

Yeah, that dude isn’t missing a trick when it comes to trolling.
How long before women decide to fuck the trans movement right in the neck?
Some already have. They are derided as TERFs. Or as unwoke mothers who don’t want adults with penises using the same changing rooms as their young daughters.

OFFS. This is about how women are uncomfortable? What happened to the fundamental unfairness of letting men compete in women’s sports?
“transjacked”
You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.
Anyone here rant about this BS yet today?
https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/06/private-property-seizure-compensation-fifth-amendment/
Wow. That way lies insurrection.
“Love Terminal Partners”
…starring Sasha Grey and Lexington Steele.
This should be a 9-0 reversal.
But this clause was eviscerated by U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Love Terminal Partners v. United States, which held that any property not earning a current positive cash flow can be taken by the government without a dime of compensation.
So, they can take anyone’s house or any vacant land that isn’t rented out. Depending on what they mean by “property not earning a current positive cash flow”, they could take any owner-occupied business, as well. If this clause is meant to cover only cash flow generated by the property qua real estate (rent, etc.) then a business using the property to make money won’t have “property earning a current positive cash flow”, as the property isn’t earning the money, the business is.
Of course, this flies in the face of valuation principles, which encompass other kinds of valuation than discounted cash flow (such as replacement cost).
Insanely broad either way. Needs to get slapped down ASAP.
Oh, it would also allow any property that is making money on rent, etc. to be taken if the costs of the property (mortgage, taxes, overhead) exceed the revenue.
I’m a bad person and a little bit of me is sort of hoping for a major pipeline rupture on the old Pipeline 3 on one of the reservations it runs through, after a panel of judges found that the environmental impact of a replacement line was insufficient.
These activists sure seem to act like they think that if they block the new replacement line, the evil oil companies will just stop drilling and people will stop using oil. Or something. I’m not really sure what they think the end game will be.
In the real world, it means that oil will be shipped through old pipelines. What could go wrong?
Of course, I’m sure if there was a major spill the activists would scream bloody murder and use the spill as “proof” that they were right all along.
It’s actually quite a shrewd tactic… assuming they don’t give a shit about the environmental devastation caused by an oil spill (which they almost certainly don’t). Either outcome, they get closer to their true goal: power.
The ignorant think it’s stopping oil production and discouraging use. The leaders want the old pipeline to break so then they can argue for all pipelines to be shut down. Functional pipelines are soon forgotten, after all; you need a good disaster to keep the grift rolling, much like gun grabbers
“Why I would never take up motorcycle riding around here. Vehicle-motorcycle homicides in the Tampa Bay area have to rival Chicago murders.”
I’m 62. I used to motorcycle all across America. I quit riding 11 years ago because every time I saw there was another motorcycle death story in the paper, I opened it up to make note of their ages. It’s unscientific, but I’d estimate after doing this for more than a decade, 80% a people in their fifties.
My buddy’s dad rode from the time he was 16. No accidents until he was in his 60s when some twit pulled out of driveway in front of him. He lived, but it really fucked him up.
My theory is that it’s due to increase reaction time. If your buddy’s dad had that happen at 30, he might have reacted in time.
Yep. I think you are right.
Getting old sucks.
I love and look forward to getting old.
It’s the alternative that sucks. I guess.
Yep. I’m 72 and just started back mountain biking. It’s a bitch having to recalibrate to what trails I attempt. Stuff I used to laugh at are now life threatening.
Fuck it. Mountain biking at 72 automatically makes you a stud, regardless of the trails.
I had a bad crash when I was about 42, said “fuck, I’m too old for this!” Rarely been on a bike since then, and just easy stuff.
Go, mikey. You badass.
“Sorry, comrades, some of you will be eggs. Prepare to be broken for the greater good.”
Ask any Catholic Church sex abuse victim about how fun it is to be one of those eggs sacrificed for the good of the collective.
I was reading a story about the recent OUTRAGE at the art museum in Boston and one of the quotes made me do a double take.
The black students on this field trip made it all the way to 8th grade without experiencing racism first hand? Take a bow you glorious crackers. That is fucking awesome. Who would have thought that we could improve so much so quickly?
Yeah, I’ve lived in Boston. The first time being exposed to racism my ass.
Boston gives the southern cities of a progressive’s fever dreams a run for their money.
Boston is the most racist place I’ve ever been in the USA.
Even at that, Europe puts it to shame.
That’s been my observation. Back in the ’80s and ’90s, at least the contrast between the racial climate in Boston and Richmond, VA (former capital of the KKKonfederacy) was striking.
That may be true but it doesn’t make this story any more believable. I would put good money on it being complete BS.
This is the kind of racism we’re talking about:
Color me skeptical.
Color me skeptical
RACIST!!!!!
First time I heard this story the staff claimed they said, ‘no water bottles’. Which is a hell of a lot more plausible.
if you mumble it to yourself you could even see how someone might mis-hear ‘waterbottles’ as ‘watermelon’. Normally if you thought you heard this, then you’d ask for clarification from the speaker, you wouldn’t call the national media. But the chaperone got the international fame that was sought, I’m sure many are envious and waiting for their turn to be subjected to such awful treatment so they, too, can be on the TV.
I thought the “watermelon” thing was debunked. Enh, I don’t buy the rest of it, either.
Ah, beat me to it. That’s what I get for not scrolling down just a hair more.
Forget it Jake, it’s Boston.
“I don’t believe in the individual”
That reminds me of a story from high school. I worked in a golf club kitchen (best job ever). We had a guy there who, well, special needs and all that. Hell of a dishwasher, but he would say some funny things now and again. He told my boss one time that he “didn’t believe in masturbation.”
My boss looks at me and goes “Oh I do buddy, I do.”
For those who don’t believe in masturbation.

I’m born again! Hallelujah!
“Yea, verily, He is risen”?
Looks a lot in the face like my niece. She didn’t have that body, though. She’s also 32 now and has 3 kids so she ain’t got that body now.
Now this is a tweet. Take the extra 30 seconds to pick out a quality box of donuts. When you just go assorted it shows you don’t actually care.
I can expand the sentiment to those breakfast buffets that always show up at work/conference functions, where an organizer runs to, say, Panera and buys a bunch of weird breads, bran muffins, etc. Nobody wants that shit. Just buy donuts already.
Fuck Matt Walsh – jelly donuts are awesome.
You are a monster. I have never seen an assorted box of donuts where the jelly donut wasn’t sitting there in the last 2-3.
I’m with ya man! Love jelly donuts, and Bavarian cream too.
“Ich bin ein Berliner” JFK
Jelly and custard filled are my first choices.
frosted with chopped nuts on the frosting is always the first one taken from the box.
people should really just get 12 of those.
Jelly donuts go first in our household. Fuck off bullshit dry-ass cake donuts!
“Matt Walsh is a writer, speaker, author, and one of the religious Right’s most influential young voices. He is known for boldly tackling the tough subjects and speaking out on faith and culture in a way that connects with his generation and beyond.” — themattwalshblog.com
Today’s “tough subject:” “Why don’t we just abolish those donut flavors?” In other words, using force and/or threat of force of government to make “powdered and jelly donuts” illegal. https://twitter.com/MattWalshBlog/status/1135626490203267075
Even given the assumption of using government to enforce Judaeo-Christian morality, please cite Book, Chapter, and Verse.
Why do you think Jesus really flipped that table over?
“Bitch set me up!”
Because the only donuts they had left were deep fried jelly-filled donuts (sufganiyot)?
Enh, he’s right. That’s good enough for me.
Now I want a chocolate Boston/Bavarian cream….
Euphemism?
I thought that was directed at HM.
You could be right. It’s difficult to keep up…
the powdered and jelly donuts are always the last ones left
Bullshit. Its the cake donuts and the ones with funny-colored frosting on them. Maybe a powdered one, but never the jelly donuts.
Is that the plain one? Those are my favorite after the custard ones.
I’m not a fan of cake donuts, but weirdly, I think they go better with a cup of coffee than virtually any other donut you can name.
Er, “doughnut.” Gotta watch my Americanisms. ;-)
I’m on board with that.
The cake donuts are always the first taken unless there’s fingerprints on the icing.
I like jellly donuts but stopped eating the sugar and carbs. Just set out a table of bacon, eggs, and sausage. Some pork roll too if you want to be local.
Considering the reaction (black markets) to maximum cinnamon mg/kg for foods legally sold in EU, “if [powdered and jelly donuts] are outlawed, then only outlaws will have [powdered and jelly donuts] .” “That’s not cocaine. Powdered sugar. It’s a donut lab.” “MMM…Forbidden donut.”
BULLSHIT

Just finished “Round-Uping” my driveway for what I assess will be the first of at least 2 times this summer. (I recall doing it at least 2x last year too – not too sure about their 12 month “guarantee”.
Of course [I AM NOT A CIVIL ENGINEER] I don’t think a driveway that was “freshly” paved (assess the summer before I moved in – 2016) should have stuff growing through it less than 2 years later. Cheap seal job? Glad it’s a rental.
Did anyone see the, I am tempted to call it “police worship,” on today’s The 700 Club? Their HQ allegedly is in Virginia Beach. They spent about a quarter of their one-hour show on the mass murder by firearm.
So does that imply the Evangelical Right are going to become gun grabbers?
I think the gun grabbers will win eventually. It seems to be human nature to knuckle under.
Well if they can create a culture when gun rights supporters are unacceptable in decent society then they will win.
Pretty much there.
http://www.businessinsider.com/2nd-amendment-countries-constitutional-right-bear-arms-2017-10
Yep the culture wars do in fact matter. And a culture that does not respect certain rights aren’t going to let you exercise them. Oh and demographic changes and social progress is supposed to be good but not change certain things for some reason.
Which is why gun owners need to not hide their ownership; it demonstrates to acquaintances who may not be die-hard progs that the lies about gun owners being racist psychopaths is incorrect.
It’s also why I have an NRA Life Member pin on my badge lanyard. People can ask me about it, or not, if they want. But I’m going to treat everyone around me with respect (assuming they deserve it) and act as if my membership is a non-issue.
The whole boat accident joke is a reason why I think the grabbers win. Most people will just hide their guns when outlawed and eventually they’ll die and because their kids couldn’t be exposed, they’ll turn the guns in when they clean out the house.
Yes.
I saw a group of five squirrels this morning. They were all fairly small, but more or less the same size running across my yard, so I don’t know if it was mom and four younglings, or five younglings in a squirrel gang. But the fifth one was definitely the “hey wait for me guys!” one of the group. I think I know which one the local coyote is gonna nab. I doubt Mother Nature is kind to squirrel nerds.
I noticed one of my roof vents had been chewed open. I suspect tree rats. Unfortunately I can’t hunt them where I live.
Gammo pellet gun. I shoot a dozen or so every year in my back yard without anyone being the wiser.
Well, not legally, at any rate.
I sat a cat trap for them. They’re too damn clever. I may set a rat trap.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5-d3rZZ-_M
Lol
I used a bug salt gun.
They aren’t so bold anymore. Seriously, they used to square off with me, 3 feet away. Not anymore.
If I find they are in the attic, they are going to meet rat shot.
We have a ridiculous squirrel problem here.
I got rid of 2 of them.
I’m escalating the trouble ticket on the other 2. They’re chewing on my solar panels, so maybe the problem will solve itself.
Oh goody.
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/03/apple-google-facebook-amazon-facing-potential-regulatory-scrutiny.html
Big tech may be a cancer, but I’m pretty sure breaking them up is not the answer.
Not to mention I don’t trust the regulators. And even if I did want a rightwing regulator I’m not sure we can find one.
How do you feel about encouraging people to use their counterparts on the other side? Examples: Atlasphere, The Babylon Bee, TheBlaze, Conservapedia, Conservative Fact Check, DuckDuckGo, Gab, The People’s Cube, Reagan Mail, Ritely, and Tea Party Community
I have no Facebook or Twitter and I’ve tried to extricate myself from Google as much as I possibly can. That’s about as far as I can personally go. The things that bother me the most about Big Tech are the cronyism with government and along with the collusion between them, ISPs, banks and payment processors to “deplatform” people. I’m not really sure how you deal with that without an appeal to regulators, but it is evil and a de facto conspiracy to prevent citizens from exercising their Constitutional Rights.
And that is the one thing these regulators absolutely won’t address.
But what would happen if enough people switched? Also, do you block googlesyndication, googletagmanager, etc.?
I block as many things as I can without wrecking my ability to browse.
As far as what would happen if enough people switched… I’m not sure what you mean by that. It’s like saying, what would happen if enough people switched from Chevy to Toyota? It did happen, and Chevy no longer enjoyed the dominance it once had.
However, Chevy did not have the ability to pressure importers, shipping companies and dealerships from carrying Toyota at all. I would imagine if any of those “alternatives” ever got big enough to actually affect Google’s market share, they’d pull some shenanigans and get them shut down. Gab is a great example; it still exists, but any momentum it had has been kneecapped by dirty tricks.
“Big enough” what I meant by “switched.” Like if POTUS and his followers went from Twitter to Gab.
Part of requiring that spending be paid for by voluntary money is that spending be paid for (deals with debt problem). The other part is that the money is voluntary rather than by taxes or the two-step of borrowing and then making the payments with taxes. But then the bar for getting the money is higher than persuading a bureaucrat or politician to spend tax money (waste problem). Voluntary money is more moral (morality problem). For the United States, the national government could even do farm subsidies, Social Security, etc. without violating the old white slavers’ document with voluntary donations instead of taxes or borrowing on the credit of the United States (constitutionality problem).
Brroksed it. Not meant for here.
Speaking of why we lose I am interested in John Ruskin whom Mises called one of the gravediggers of English Freedom:
Hmmm international trade….
Hmm foreign traveler
Used increased literacy and the emerging non-censored popular press to express his views. And said magazine was published by Thackeray…
Dammit
Hmmm international trade….
Goddamnit
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ruskin#Early_life_(1819–1846)
Please elaborate on how you get from reading about Ruskin to “why we lose.” Yes, cashless society. Unhealthy obsession with peacocks. Take out the alleged Christianity and the part about punishment as last resort, add “To each according to his ability. To each according to his need.” and you have Democratic Kampuchea or close to it.
The man benefited from the liberal society yet he loathed it and he used the liberal society to undermine itself.
Thank you for your prompt reply.
I’ll be the one to decide what me favorite new beer is thank you. I’m guessing it won’t be an IPL.

Hot take of the day: Miley Cyrus was groped and kissed by a stranger on the street, and that’s seriously not cool
Like, omigod.
Jeebus people are fragile.
Someone groped her?!
THE HORROR
When did she change her hair?
I don’t even recognize her.
Damn right that’s not cool.
I hope they guy got put on some heavy broad-spectrum antibiotics.

So individualism is racist. How to deal with that without engaging in culture war or being a reactionary I wonder?
Do they really want to go down the avenue of collectivist crime statistics…?
Black men committing crime is proof of white racism. White men committing crime is also proof of white racism. Fixed it for you.
How dare you hold them to the same standards that they hold towards the wrong thinkers?
That’s a lot of words to say heads I win, tails you lose.
Can’t free yourself from bias? True. But you can at least try. The author should give it a stab.
Only fools can’t see how beautiful the emperor’s new clothes are.
You really have to feel sorry for DiAngelo. He’s a sufferer from (dons sunglasses)
The Unbearable Whiteness of Being.
1. I’m pretty sure you just stereotyped white people as happy idiots who are unaware of the scourge of racism that is destroying this country every second of every day.
2. I don’t think anyone is stereotyped in a country where they are the ethnic majority.

“I thought she was trying to put me in a headlock,” explained Trump, referring to when the Queen went to pat him on the shoulder, “and no one gets the drop on Trump. So down she went. I guess it surprised her, but we had a good laugh about it.” Video of the incident shows only Trump laughing, though, as he stood over the unconscious 92-year-old woman after having just shouted, “Bow down! I’m the king now!”
Snopes sez “mostly true”.
Oddly, also mostly true:

Oh Illinois…you never fail to live down to my expectations: https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/illinois-legislature-prepares-to-pass-a-bill-deeming-abortion-a-fundamental-right/
This past Memorial Day Weekend, the state legislature and Governor Pritzker passed a bunch of bills, tax increases, and resolutions to continually rape the citizens of this state. The weed legalization one was probably the only one that made me somewhat happy, but knowing Illinois, they will find a way to fuck that up too.
Weed legalization and tax increases? Unpossible.
Everyone’s claiming that the legalization of cannabis will lead to increased revenues which will then solve our pension problems.
LOL
. . . increased revenues . . .
Sure. It’s been working so well here in Canada.
Yeah, in California too.
55% of the weed money goes to brand new programs, and 35% into the general fund. We’ll be lucky to break even.
Don’t disregard the suspiciously concerted drive to turn human trafficking into the next big panic so as to keep the money flowing to the local constabularies that they may play G.I. Joe. That’s gonna eat up tons of money.
55% of the grossly inflated projection of weed money goes to brand new programs, and 35% into the general fund.
Oh, yeah. You’re not even going to come close to breaking even.
“55% of the grossly inflated projection of weed money goes to brand new programs, ”
Like spending your bonus on a down payment on a Ferrari.
Yeah, in practice the *floor* for those programs will be 55% of the initial projection – which is certain to be wildly optimistic. They could easily soak up the whole take.
It’s a marvellous illustration of how raising fresh revenue rarely works to solve what is essentially a *spending* problem.
Don’t tell me casinos didn’t work.
Solve Illinois’ pension problems?
There isn’t that much pot in the world.
The solution is to let the checks bounce and let all the government-sector retirees starve.
It’s almost like the cartels have lobbyists to make sure there’s always plenty of room for the black market.
“Abortion Performance Refusal Act”
Terrible name for an act.
Inconceivable!
https://fee.org/articles/why-the-uk-suddenly-is-suffering-from-a-physician-shortage/
A law that forbids doctors from retiring for tax purposes would fix that up right well, aye guvner?
“In some cases, they end up paying the NHS to work.“
The article seems to use the phrase “unintended consequences “ a lot
Citizens may also have a private pension plan. But since deposits are tax-deferred, the government slashed the annual limit on contributions from £255,000 in 2010-2011 to £40,000 in 2014-2015. There is also a lifetime pension limit of £1,055,000.
Holy shit. Whether that limit is on the value of the pension (in which case, your private pension will pay no more than $7,000/month with no inflation adjustments) or on the total pension payments (in which case, you will either run out real early or get about $2600/month), that is a major ass-raping.
Also, perhaps, worth considering – user fees and subscription services.
Yes.
The Animal Planet network has a doc series about the Georgia Aquarium and it is wholly awesome.

Jennifer Rubin, the go to conservative for bashing conservatives.
Good. Now do CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, NPR and all the other ‘unbiased’ networks.
Think any of them would allow you to go on their programs and talk about how biased they are?
Speaking of Ruskin haven’t libertarians and their liberal predecessors seriously overestimated the libertarian bonafides of the artistic community? I mention the assumption was they would be hardcore libertarians since they hate censorship, hate socons, are urbanites, like to travel, like to mingle with different cultures, cultural appropriate, have bigger audiences and can make more money then ever before and no longer have to depend on an aristocratic patron.
However it didn’t work out that way. If you hate mainstream society then well what happens if the mainstream society is libertarian? The notion that one man change the world and defeat darkness and apathy can easily lead to TOP MAN worship.
A starving artist vs an artist without dental insurance. Which one do you think supports big government?
Both?
True. Do over: Which one is less likely to support moar government?
Not sure. A starving artist can not give a shit about the government and society and if he earns success he will be grateful that the free market allowed him to do so. One the other hand he could also blame his starving artist phase on the free-market and bemoan how it rewards trash rather true art.
Artist without dental insurance could be perfectly fine without and think it is unnecessary so big government is bad. Or he could blame his lack of it on the free-market.
My gut instinct tells me the one that’s gets a taste of govt largesse is going to lose the vision of life necessary to make truly inspired art.
You kinda are assuming that those starving artists in rejecting society aren’t rejecting laissez faire economics at the same time.
Also how many starving artists have come from truly poor backgrounds?
Depends on how strictly you’re defining “art”.
Are you talking about graffiti or internet memes?
Also, artists don’t have to reject society as a whole to make inspired art. Any occupation that requires creativity rewards people that ignore certain societal restraints. If an artist sees the state as oppressive, he can be libertarian. If he sees his lack of money as the fault of society, he won’t.
“Are you talking about graffiti or internet memes?”
Sure. Why not? I’d say what CPRM and SF are doing is “art”.
You have reminded me of an article a fw years back (before I even frequented ToS). In it, a French author was complaining about how everyone was buying translated foreign imports. No one bought the stuff he wrote, so he was agitating for measures to crack down on imports. He made his living by being paid from a government program supporting the arts, and he also wanted them to increase the amount of money the French government paid him to write books no one wanted to read.
True but they could reject the parts you like about society.
Again what if those societal restraints are the restrains you want?
True but he could also be a communist who blames the oppression on capitalism and the lack of Real TOP MEN.
Ehem, I am practitioner of the Fine Arts; got a fancy piece of paper and debt to show it.
This raises interesting questions about the flaws of nationalism. And how rejections of American imperialism, cultural or otherwise, can lead to unlibertarian behavior.
Trick question:
The artist who got an expensive degree from a small liberal arts college will be more likely to support big government.
The implication that wealth and college education leads to statism is yet another wrinkle in the libertarian/classical liberal theory not working out,
I’ll rephrase that: since going to college is supposed to be a good thing and so is being wealthy enough to afford to so then it leading to statism is rather ironic.
“If you hate mainstream society then well what happens if the mainstream society is libertarian?”
Guess we’ll find out after the libertarian moment. Any moment now…
“The notion that one man change the world and defeat darkness and apathy can easily lead to TOP MAN worship.”
A danger not exclusive to libertarians, and, I would argue, far less likely to apply to your typically skeptical libertarian than most.
Artists who hate having their own work censored, but love silencing anyone who criticizes it do not have a hate of censorship.
True> My point was that libertarians and their liberal predecessors did not seem to be aware of that possibility at all.
I mention the assumption was they would be hardcore libertarians since they hate censorship, hate socons, are urbanites, like to travel, like to mingle with different cultures, cultural appropriate, have bigger audiences…
I think that’s where your problem lies. It’s a mistake to conflate cultural traits with political principles. Just because artists tend to value those lifestyle features for themselves, doesn’t mean that they value those things as universals.
Sure artists hate censorship of their work. But, there’s no shortage of artists, not only willing, but eager to impose censorship on the wrong voices.
Sure, they hate socons. But, in a lot of cases, only because the socons are pushing the wrong particular social agenda. How many are willing and eager to see their cultural values imposed on the socons?
Sure, they’re urbanites who like to travel and experience other cultures. But, is that open-mindedness, or just oikophobia?
It strikes me that even the would-be totalitarian values freedom for himself. Those who value liberty make a mistake when they mistake that for genuine support for freedom.
Most artists are in practice actually libertarian but in ideology left-wing. They are blind to their own libertarianism.
For example, most movies have at their core libertarian messages (individuals triumph over conglomerates through self-will and determination) but most of the people making them would not admit that’s the political tone of the stories.
haven’t libertarians and their liberal predecessors seriously overestimated the libertarian bonafides of the artistic community
Not for at least 40 years.
Should have realized that much earlier what with Dickens, Shaw, Wilde, Ruskin, etc.
Also look at how libertarian watch the Wire and Chernobyl and see what they want to see but now what the authors want to see.
*grumble*
This hotel is a nice restoration and remodel of a classical art deco building… but the internet is only slightly more existant now than it was when the structure was new

straff is right though.
Love that movie.
Oh, what parts of Milwaukee are best avoided for actual crime/safety reasons as opposed to just because it’s Milwaukee?
Milwaukee’s getting to be quite the hip spot for Illinois expats to relocate to.
I have three nieces who all live there now after growing up in the Chicago suburbs.
And they’re going to turn Wisconsin from purple to blue.
No idea, but I’m sure you’ll be able to tell.
I’d like to know before someone has broken my face and made off with my wallet and car.
I’m surprised you can’t just query the Intertoobz on something like that.
Given how unreliably spotty the internet sources are on that very point, It’s still better to get the word from someone familiar with the area.
If that’s the one downtown, I know it. Spent a couple weeks doing a gig, living out of there. I seem to recall using my hotspot for internet.

oh that’s swell, some moron tried to shoot someone in the food court at the Torrance mall, not far from me. Described as a ‘long gun’ supposedly (though we’ll see what that actually means). And there are already pious tweets about ‘gun violence’. Was anybody carrying at the mall to pop the guy? of course not, not in CA.
Disgruntled Honda customer?
That’s a few miles away. But, we have them and Toyota to thank for high end sushi around here.
well, we HAD Toyota. Thanks, Sacramento and other associated dumbasses.

Serena Williams, classless bitch, part infinity+1.
Something about Federer always bugged me. Over the years, he’s starting to grow on me. He’s completely right in this case.
I can’t stand that smug prick. The last straw was when he created a tournament and pocketed a cool quarter million dollars each of the first two years. As I was watching it the first year, I assumed it was some sort of charity event. Silly me.
I’m sure he hates you too.
I think the Laver Cup is pointless, but it’s not much different from all the other exhibitions in the off season that players play for the paycheck and then complain about the length of the season.
Not many players are able to crony like that, though.
I dunno. I hear she was willing to go to another room and do it. This *may* be a case of everyone around her being overly star-struck – a frequent occurrence that drives me fucking nuts with tennis. (“Let’s cut away to watch Roger brushing his teeth!”)
Her unwillingness to wait was part of the problem.
True.
There’s a much more important sports story linked on that page: Pakistan beat England in the second game of the cricket World Cup.
Ahahahahahahaha
Does England ever win anything in cricket? Seems like the colonies have cornered that market.
It goes in cycles. England is actually one of the favorites to win the World Cup this year.
On another sports note: Carlton sacked their coach this morning.
Heh, I take it the Essendon/Carlton match still on my DVR didn’t go so well for them.
No. No it didn’t.
Another question: portable generator mounted on the tongue of a trailer and used as the main supply of power. Do I need to return a ground from the ground busbar in the breaker panel or not?
Do I need to attach the ground of the generator to the frame of the trailer?
I searched the interwebs and it was split on this.
run the ground to the dog tub, sell the revitalizing affects.
First things first:
Did you check the thermostat?
I’m not sure I get the difference here. Even if the generator doesn’t require grounding, what could it hurt?
Generator should be stand alone. Leave it be.
Wrong, wrong, wrongiity wrong wrong.
Absolutely the ground needs to be connected to the load. The ground provides an alternate return path in the event of a failure in the neutral.
A very good idea to ground the trailer (assuming that the generator is grounded to the trailer; vital). Depending upon the length of the run, the voltage at the far end can float up to 120V.
Grounds are your friend.
I could steal so many credit card numbers at my job if I wanted to. Not that I would, but it’s just how my mind works – I try to think “if I were going to break the rules of this system, how would I do it?”… It’s one of the reasons I considered working in fraud investigation.
I guess as long as a company offers the option to pay over the phone, there’s going to be the risk of employees stealing the card numbers. We don’t actually use the CVV code to run our payments, but half the time they read it off to us anyway out of habit.
My husband had a card skimmed at Brooks Brothers Outlet, of all places. There was a skimmer at the gas station by me. And that’s just the physical device, not even employees just copying the numbers or whole databases. It’s every
*everywhere.
oops. that wasn’t meant to be ‘hit post’.
SparkFun has released an app for Android devices that can detect some skimmers using the cellphones’ built-in Bluetooth capability. I used it successfully in Spain and France last fall.
First card fraud we had was when my wife gave the card to the doofus at the full-serve gas station (our town actually still had a couple). On here way home the card company called: “Did you just charge a bunch of video games?” “Uh, no.”
CVV numbers can be typed into a payment system, they just can’t be stored. It has no bearing on whether a charge can be disputed.
