Poor impulse control? In a jail cell? Say it ain’t so!
Joe, I think Trump is, in fact, a natural born citizen over 35 years old selected by the Electoral College, so its a bit of a lie to say he “fails the basic standard to be president”. Something about as ye sow, so shall ye reap, you coarse, lying moron.

Unless it is an unusually high one, I’ve heard rest and drinking plenty of fluids is the best way to treat a fever.
Oh, and more cowbell…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malignant_hyperthermia
Interesting. Florida Man, have you have had this happen on your table?
No. I’ve had people with a known personal history and family history. Avoid inhaled anesthetics and succinylcholine and they “shouldn’t” trigger. Dantrolene is the only treatment I’m aware of. A few years back a surgery center had a MH crisis, but no dantrolene on hand. I’m pretty sure that’s a lawsuit.
Whoops.
What would you even do in that situation? Ice in the armpits and send them by ambulance somewhere else?
Cold fluids, nasogastric tube irrigation with ice water, pack them in ice, discontinue trigger agents, hyperventilating, transfer ASAP or get dantrolene from closest source.
What is the purpose of the hyperventilation? Is it strictly for heat exchange, or does it drive some physiological response?
Because of the increased metabolism you get into a metabolic acidosis. If you hyperventilate you can mitigate the acidosis by blowing off CO2.

But it’s the worst thing ever when another politician won’t release his taxes.
Nothing to see here, just some tax and possibly immigration fraud by one of our elected representatives. It’s not like she married her brother or anything.
She really is a piece of shit. And also my congressperson. I haven’t voted since 2006 (the stolen Franken election), but I’m certainly reconsidering registering to vote again.
“Q: Is Omar now in trouble with the IRS?
A: That’s not clear. The IRS says federal privacy law prohibits it from commenting.”
RELEASE YOUR TAXES
Hopefully, it will inspire her to propose a bill to end taxation by the no-longer-federal government.
What? She released a statement that said she was exonerated!
That quote comes about 2/3 of the way through a story that says the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board fined her for spending campaign money on personal items and forced her to reimburse her campaign.
Funny how the local reporter didn’t follow up on that statement. “Your statement is at direct odds with every fact related to this story. Care to comment on that?”
That would be both racist and sexist.
You left out “Trumpian” and “Islamophobic”, but that is pretty much exactly what her initial response was.
That was the letter delivered by her lawyer.
Jesus, I thought I was making a joke.
Now you know how the onion feels.
Racist, sexist AND islamaphobic. Truly the trifecta of hatred.
“Crawford is serving a five-year state prison sentence term for robbery conspiracy. The other inmate is in Indiana County jail on a DUI-related charge.”
Well, the other inmate is going to win a fat settlement at taxpayer expense. And nothing else will happen.
Why? I can’t imagine anyone thinks that everyone in pre-trial detention is entitled to a private lock-up. There’s no indication that the county officials were particularly slow to respond, either.
I can’t speak for other states, but they don’t mix people who are serving a sentence with people who are pre-trial here. Often, the convicts have nothing to lose.
LA County has done it a few times, with totally expected results, and they paid a 7 figure settlement each time.
In Maryland pre-trial detention and short-term sentences for minor offenses are done in jail. Convicts go to actual prison, and the two don’t mix.
That’s what Rikers is for, too. Still… you don’t want to go to Rikers.
And yet, Manafort is in Rikers.
Yeah, this dude was pulled from prison for some other charge. Should have been in a different holding cell.
Normally, they wouldn’t even be in the same building.
CA allows jail for sentences up to 365 days. Beyond that, it’s state prison.
That used to be true. Then Prop 47 passed. Now there is a mix.
That was a detail I didn’t pick up on. Thanks.
“fails the basic standard to be president”
There are only two legal requirements, age and natural-born status.
As an aside, it is not any kind of “-ism” to request evidence of both when someone runs for president.

Speaking of jail, did anyone listen to the last Fifth Column? Moynihan always has the best stories.
I probably haven’t listened in 2 years, when it became obvious that Moynihan and Welch were gonna take turns sneering at Trump for half the podcast each week whether he declared martial law or legalized pot.
I got fed up with Welch, in particular, and dropped it for a while but gave it another shot a few weeks ago, and it’s been enjoyable. Moynihan at least seems principled and has criticisms of all sides, but Welch is just a full-blown cosmo.
Kmele, of course, remains the best.
The highlights are almost always unrelated to politics – e.g., a drunken Moynihan ended up as a shabbos goy, Moynihan going to jail, etc.
I mean, Moynihan appears to have got the full Irish, meaning his only choices were: cop, firefighter, bartender, or journalist.
I could see him as an unhappy high school teacher, bolting for the bar as soon as the bell rings at 3.
That’s fair. But only if he had a couple of warmup drinks before first period and during lunch.
That goes without saying.
Is that the “Irish Curse” I hear the girls talk about?
Yeah. Sure.
I gave up on it when Welch yelled at Kmele something like “We won’t know if it’s a fishing expedition until Mueller is done with his investigation!”. This was in response to Kmele asking what evidence of a crime there was and what exactly would Mueller be investigating.
The other thing that annoyed the shit out of me was that they were bringing in guests that were even more annoying than Welch.
We have to pass it to find out what’s in it.
Here, pass this kidney stone.
I’d be fine if Welch dropped off the podcast. I don’t always agree with Moynihan but he’s pretty even handed.
I’ve turned it off with some of the more annoying guests but even ridiculous lefties like Ben Dreyfuss can still be entertaining.
Seems like a million years ago that I liked Welch.
Same; I like to think it was Welch that changed and not me (us), but maybe I’m wrong.
“We won’t know if it’s a fishing expedition until Mueller is done with his investigation!”
IOW, there can be no objection to any investigation until it is finished.
I stopped listening too. I agree with the criticisms listed and would like to add another to the list. Too much Anthony Fisher.
Yeah Anthony Fisher annoys me too. Last episode he was going on about how bad Dave Rubin is. Dave Rubin is pretty much on the shallow end of the intellectual pool, and all these people expect him to push back on concepts he doesn’t even begin to comprehend. They are just jealous he made a ton of money doing what they do but is far more successful at it. Being mad at Dave Rubin for being an idiot is counterproductive if you got a problem with the way he interviews certain people try to interview them yourself.
It took Fisher’s remarks very differently.
I listen regularly. Yes, Moynihan has great stories. Love him or hate him, he is a character.
I heard Uncle Joe was going to destroy Trump today. Looks like he pulled off what no one else could.
Hooo boy, this campaign is going to be something.
If Biden is the nominee, the debate will be fun. I recall how disrespectful Biden was to Paul Ryan. Ryan was too
much of a little bitchnice/passive to call Biden on his crap. Trump will not let that slide. That was one of those WTF moments. I watched and thought Biden embarrassed himself with his constant giggling and making faces, but the general reaction was “Whoa, Biden smoked him!”

The Myth of the ‘Lazy’ Father
Who Works More?
I’ll start with a fact that has been reported several times, yet mysteriously has never inspired think pieces in mainstream-media outlets. Combining housework, child care, and paid work, dads put in just as much time as moms do—in fact, a little more. The Pew Research Center found this in the 2011 American Time Use Survey (though a gap of just 54 vs. 53 hours per week) and again in the 2016 round (61 vs. 57), and a joint panel of the Brookings Institution and the American Enterprise Institute confirmed the results using the 2015 data. Combining the 2013 to 2017 ATUS,1and limiting the data to respondents married and living with their spouses to ensure the moms and dads represent similar households, I find a gap of about 40 minutes per day, or four and a half hours per week: about 59 for men and 55 for women.
I’ll share it here and not with my wife.
Am I allowed to double bill?
You mean I don’t spend 45 hours a week in the office having fun with friends?
Does being here count?
Sounds a bit familiar.
If you’re getting a bad deal in your partnership, renegotiate.
What am I going to do, withhold sex?
Stop going to work?
Self-immolation.
Yes, deny her your precious vital fluids
Zardoz nods.
Can confirm and it’s the main reason I’m single now. A 40 minute gap doesn’t come close.
I talked about this with my wife, and it was really good for our marrage. But my wife isn’t a cunt, and that helps.
We generally don’t have this problem. She has never accused me of being lazy and usually something like this only comes up when she bitches about being at home with the kids all day. She never takes me up on my offer for her to go back to work though.
Oh, my wife never accused me of being lazy (or, at least, she only made such an accuzation when she was well founded.) The issue was that I was being ground down to a fine powder between my work-more-hours-than-the-norm job, my volunteer-more-hours-than-the-norma volunteer work, and my housework-probably-about-the-norm. We both agreed that I should cut back on all three. I have. Its been very good for everything (she went back to work, which offset my reduced earnings.)
Same here. We’re about even. She does virtually no house work and leaves crap laying around, which pisses me off to no end, but she also does more child-rearing (child entertaining, really) and handles all the parent-school type stuff, doctor’s appointments, etc. She’s kind of like the nanny and social secretary where I’m the landscaper, hausfrau, and accountant. We both work, and that comes out more or less even, too.
My biggest source of inner rage is the kitchen. She’ll make dinner, but then take the baby after dinner for a bath and to lay down for bed.
I am left to clean up a disaster every night. It’s like she uses every utensil in the kitchen to make dinner and leaves out every ingredient used.
Then cook.
Oh, I do on the weekends and we have pizza on Friday.
My theory is that people really overestimate the amount of time they spend on chores that they really resent.
For example, my wife didn’t like having our dog and would moan about how she always had to feed and water him. In reality, she probably got stuck with that job one or two nights a week. But since it was a chore she resented, she was convinced she did it every day.
Vacuuming is the chore that I refuse to do. If I had to do it once a year, I’d complain the other 364.25 days.
My wife and I are pretty complimentary when it comes to chores, so this hasn’t been a huge problem for us.
Get an awesome vacuum. Then you’ll enjoy it.
Seeing what collects in my Dyson is oddly compelling. Not quite Dr. Pimple-popper, but a related emotion.
My theory is that people really overestimate the amount of time they spend on chores that they really resent.
This. I’m more tolerant to mess than my wife, but we’ll both get stressed out dreading cleaning up the living room after the toddler. 3.5 minutes later, the room is clean.
The part that drives me batty is that my wife treats cleaning as an event vs. an ongoing process.
That, and she’s a pack-rat; I haven’t even watched it, but I suspect I’d want to force my wife to watch Marie Kondo using the Ludovico technique.
I just watch Hoarders to feel better about myself, and then change exactly none of my behavior.
I watch 600 lb life when I bring Whataburger home.
wife treats cleaning as an event vs. an ongoing process
*nods vigorously*
My wife is an organized person, but deep cleaning isn’t her Forte. I try to deep clean on the weekends, but there’s just too many other chores that I don’t often get around to scrubbing floors and windexing.

Dear Zardoz,
I just got done running my weed eater [insert plug for Husqvarna brand pre-mix fuel: real gasoline, no ethanol. Even if it does cost about eight bucks per quart] and I (still) have an issue. In order to get it to run at full throttle, I have to close down the choke a little bit. This indicates to me it needs more fuel at WFO, but twiddling the adjustment screws seems to have no effect. It’s like they’re purely ornamental. What gives?
Have you considered global warming?
If not, second option is Donald J. Trump.
This is gonna sound crazy, but make sure your exhaust isn’t partially blocked with carbon deposits.

Double check the fuel filter even though that’s probably not it
Pull the spark arrestor out and throw it away.
As a last resort just put a new carb on it.
If you have to choke it a bit, perhaps an air leak?
Also this
This comment brought to you by David Carradine.
I have had that problem before. You probably need to replace the turboencabulator.
Is there an adjustment limiter? How old is the equipment? Adjust the low speed circuit first, then the high speed. In addition to the fuel filter, look for cracks in the fuel line (or replace it’s many years old). Could just be sucking in air at WOT.
Next would be rebuild or replace the carb.

When I was in Moscow in the 90s there were always protesters by the Kremlin with large portraits of Stalin. In the Kremlin wall the grave with the most flowers was Gagarin, but #2 was Stalin. And of course Lenin still has his mausoleum. Some people are still nostalgic for that stuff.
It runs fine when it’s choked down a bit, so I don’t think it’s a fuel supply issue. It’s a few years old, now, so it could have crap on the spark arrestor.
Completely glossing over the fact that the original purpose of abortion was to ethnically cleanse “unsavory” elements.

“And all these efforts by President Trump and other ultra-radical conservative judges and justices to impose their faith on Americans is contrary to our Constitution and that’s what this is.”
This is why the debate will never be settled. This is someone who either willfully, or through ignorance, is misrepresenting her opponents’ views. To people who are pro-life, it’s a matter of life and death. It’s no more imposing their faith than people who oppose the death penalty.
Erm..,what?

“I think there’s some issues that have such moral clarity that we have as a society decided that the other side is not acceptable. Imagine saying that it’s okay to appoint a judge who’s racist or anti-Semitic or homophobic. Asking someone to appoint someone who takes away basic human rights of any group of people in America—I don’t think that those are political issues anymore,” Gillibrand said.
“And we believe in this country in the separation of church and state, and I respect the rights of every American to hold their religious beliefs true to themselves, but our country and our Constitution has always demanded that we have a separation of church and state,” Gillibrand continued. “And all these efforts by President Trump and other ultra-radical conservative judges and justices to impose their faith on Americans is contrary to our Constitution and that’s what this is. And so I believe that for all of these issues, they are not issues that there is a fair other side. There is no moral equivalency when you come to racism, and I do not believe there is a moral equivalency when it comes to changing laws that deny women reproductive freedom.”
What. The. Fuck.
Literally.
Shorter Gillibrand: the unborn have no rights
When racism > murder….
She’s mixing up all sorts of thoughts that adds up to nothing more than sophistry.
How many bases can she steal?
FFS, Gillibrand, people who are anti-abortion believe that you’re taking away the basic human right to not be murdered when you perform an abortion. It’s not that they don’t like women, dumbass, it’s that they think you’re killing babies. This is why you’re not getting anywhere with your pathetic excuse for an argument, dipshit.
At least she’s honest about it. She basically stated the Democratic party platform. The rest of them will hem and haw if challenged on it.
“our Constitution has always demanded that we have a separation of church and state,”

Here is the culture war that you ordered. Would you like a glass of whine with it?
The only argument pro-life people have is that a fetus is a living baby. That’s it. Nobody thinks a fetus is a non-living blob of tissue, but is still anti-abortion because they hate women. Yet that’s the way pro-life people are portrayed.

Here it is, again. That infuriating ad about how electric cars are teh awesomez, sponsored by Volkswagen. “Are you a Fred Flintstone neanderthal, burning gas and killing the planet, or a wise George Jetson, driving the car of the future? They’re fun!”
They neglect to mention that those ads are part of the ransom agreement between VW and the EPA because VW (quite rightly) decided customers preferred better fuel mileage and performance from their diesel cars.
Grrrrrr
I thought George Jetson was supposed to be the epitome of privileged White Male patriarchy and outmoded 1960s right-wing values?
Tucker argues that The Jetsons is now.
The new VB bus commercial does mention the EPA issue right at the beginning. I thought it was pretty gutsy.
I just don’t want a battery to run my car. My little one I use to start it already does weird things in the cold.
They heat the lithium ion battery pack in the winter.
In cold temps below 10F or so you can cut range 40% or so especially with high use of the cabin heat.
Yeah, I saw that they were draining the battery to keep itself warm.
Seems less green every minute
They are more efficient, but not magic. For example in NJ we don’t have that kind of cold usually, maybe only 10 days a year.,
More efficient in using the energy they have stored? I am skeptical, but Consider how much energy is wasted getting that battery charged.
I can spin it multiple ways. Depends on which side you want to debate. Some have shown diesel is the way to go others electric.
The actual charging from AC to DC is fairly efficient. The generation itself much less so. The propulsion part is actually pretty efficient as well, but the batteries suffer in extreme temps.
The way I looked at it was my actual electric cost here, the required maintenance of the auto and expected use case and useful life.
Someone insisted I buy a battery powered weedeater. Two days later that piece of cheese was resting in the bushes at the bottom of the hill and I was buying a Stihl gasoline powered machine. I can edge my entire yard with only a few tablespoons of gas. I have no doubt that the battery powered joke gobbled up 100 times as much energy and did half of the work.
The only battery powered doodad I have is a phone and a flashlight. Everything else is powered with gasoline or gunpowder.

They are fit for some purposes and less so for others. But they aren’t magical, they won’t save the planet and the power (mostly) doesn’t come out of thin air.
Yeah I wouldn’t mind a Tesla 3 or a Chevy Bolt just to go back ‘n’ forth to work. But the coldest days in Michigan would consume battery… and I really couldn’t get too far one one charge given the distances. But it would be a good commuter car; and more efficient than the gas-swilling Mustang.
We have a Model 3 and an Explorer. As a huge car guy, I appreciate the Tesla.
I have a hybrid and it’s the best of both worlds for commuting. 45mpg, runs on gas, and doesn’t look like an eco car.
I highly considered, but the car guy in me cringed and you have more complexity and the internal combustion engine maintenance still.
It hasn’t been too bad. Sure, the combustion engine is smaller, and there’s an electrical system that could fail, but most of the complexity is in the tranny, and I don’t mess with trannies.
Are we not doing phrasing?
Don’t mess with trannys? That’s not what I heard.
No, it doesn’t come out of thin air. Energy stored in hydrocarbons are changed to heat and light, most of which is lost, and transferred to water to make steam which is then changed to mechanical energy to generate electricity which is then transmitted down tens of miles of wire, losing a squillion shitloads along the way, to your battery which is then changed to mechanical energy to move your car. Look at each and every step and figure out how much energy is lost and how much you get out of the end of the process.
Compare that to the calories consumed at every step by skipping all of that and putting the hydrocarbons directly into your car.
It is the dumbest idea since the square wheel.
Powering an electric grid is very expensive and inefficient. The only reason we do it is because for lots of uses….lights, blenders, television, computers, refining of metals….electricity is essential. Cars aint on that list and probably never will be.
Quick search shows that coal fired electric has 35-45% energy efficiency, minus 5% in transmission losses. So 30-40% net. New gasification processes are in the 55-60% range, again with 5% transmission losses.
Internal combustion engines have 25-50% energy efficiency.
Subtract out the energy efficiency of the electric cars, and it’s all a wash.
The transmission loss alone is wildly off. I am not buying it.
I’ve been working on an article on electrical power transmission/distribution so I’ve got some insight on it.
Back o’ the envelope shows 1.75% loss every 100 miles for a 345kV line.
Whatever. If people want ‘lectrics, they can buy ‘lectrics. I only resent having choices eliminated because of some watermelon’s fantasy,
Besides, I would much rather have this sexy beast.
Would!
Stop it already!
Your fault, my friend. It’s become my someday car.
Beautiful.
Love the 3k
The subsidy is ridiculous. I got $3,750 from fedgov + no NJ sales tax.
Thanks Tundra!
You won’t believe what I’m getting for my Powerwalls.
Not as much as I’m getting for my power balls.
I heard they’re out of juice.
Please tell me it is coming from CA and not fedgov…
30% federal tax credit.
State subsidy is a direct payment. Right now, $.35/watthour.
Ouch… Right in my wallet.
What if government was not being paid by taxes or by the kind of borrowing with debt payments paid by taxes? It would eliminate the tax credit, however…
What if government was not being paid by taxes or by the kind of borrowing with debt payments paid by taxes? That would be a lot more than $3,750.
I have a pretty ’59 MGA that looks about the same at a fraction of the price of the Healey….and much easier to get parts. Both are a pretty sweet ride if you like go-carts.
Okay, maybe NOW Team USA can back off a bit.
Goddamn.
Have any of the goals been impressive? From the 8 (?) I have seen, about half could have been saved by a competent goalie.
Team USA hasn’t really been trying.
Also, two more goals since I typed that.
They’re playing down to their opponents – I’ve seen them look far better.
I guess to be fair, the goalie is also like 5′ 2″.
They know what they signed up for.
If FIFA cares about sportsmanship they kill GD and install a mercy rule.
Alex Morgan’s last – outside foot – was pretty slick.
Ask her how the Pride are doing.
*looks*
Ouch.
I’d prefer her inside thigh…
I think there’s some issues that have such moral clarity that we have as a society decided that the other side is not acceptable.
——–
And so I believe that for all of these issues, they are not issues that there is a fair other side. There is no moral equivalency when you come to racism, and I do not believe there is a moral equivalency when it comes to changing laws that deny women reproductive freedom.
Senator Sorority Girl is morally superior to you, and don’t try to pretend she’s not.
I wonder how she feels about people that are racist towards whites.
I bet she’s got some serious moral equivalency concerning that.
Abortion is the opposite of reproduction… Therefore no one is restricting reproductive freedom. You’re free to bang who you want. That’s reproductive freedom.
I’m not an asshole either!
http://amp.timeinc.net/fortune/2019/06/11/salesforce-marc-benioff-activism
Christ, what an asshole.
[cite fucking needed on both counts]
It’s no longer sufficient for businesses—and their leaders—to keep quiet on hot-button issues, Benioff sympathizers argue. Once staid, silent, and content myopically to chase profits, old-school corporate executives are finding themselves at sea amid a demographic shift. “What happened in the last decade is millennials have entered the workforce and companies like mine are far more active and involved in creating the culture,” Benioff said, noting that this responsibility is no longer “the lonely job of the HR exec.”
“Like Tableau,” Benioff said, referring to the data visualization software company he bought for nearly $16 billion in stock just a day prior, “I’m doing this because it’s customer-driven.”
“Investors are not crazy about” that deal, noted Alan Murray, Fortune’s CEO and the session’s moderator. Indeed, the price of Salesforce shares crm dipped as much as 5% on the news.
“They will see, as they’ve always seen, how amazing it will be,” Benioff replied with self-assurance. “It’s just a spectacular combination.”
If I let my customers and employees and their endless stream of beliefs govern and run my business, I wouldn’t be in business.
This can’t possibly work out well in the long run. Can it?
Not that I think ‘go woke, go broke’ is accurate or anything but it all seems to point towards alienating customers. Then again, maybe some people just don’t give a shit and will stick to their Gillette razors and Nike shoes.
Calling Heroic Mulatto
I just was just discussing with someone that I don’t give a shit that Sears is going out of business.
I was pointing out that you think it is stupid to stop “demographic change” while this guy is arguing that “demographic change” leads to woke businesses.
And?
Marketeers pander. That’s what they do.
Do you agree that “demographic change” is the cause of this? If so do you approve of this change? If not then doesn’t that mean you think there are some ““demographic changes” that are bad?
I’m just trying to figure out what means Winston wants to use to ‘intelligently’ stop demographic change. Bullets to the back of heads? Forcible sterilization? Subsidies to encourage good people having more babies? Zyklon B showers?
Forget it. I lied. I don’t really want to know what the little fascist is hinting at.
That’s overly harsh. I am more concerned about the notion of how everything evolves and changes yet the same basic values will remain unchanged. Those values being free speech, laissez-faire economics, freedom of association. How that is supposed to work is not explained.
I’m speaking of Jefferson’s Tree of Liberty and such.
And yes attempts to “conserve” these values have had serious flaws. The public school system for one was supposed to ensure the continence of those values and that didn’t work out. Mass indoctrination or slaughter of people have lead to terrible things so that is out of the picture.
Really so I am fascist now? Is this Vox?
*public school system for one was supposed to ensure the continuance*
Part of my problem is that I don’t trust the TOP MEN either.
I’ll expand a bit more on the Tree of Liberty: apparently all those future revolutionaries will agree that the future governments will be bad for the same reasons and that the new revolutionary government needs to support the same sorts of things.
So I’ve been called a Nazi and tried to defend myself but get no replies even when I reject the Nazi and eugenicists and well liberal (baby bonus) things I supposedly support.
Also when I think “demographic change” I thought that means more than just immigration? Urban vs. rural, class and old vs. young? Those other 3 categories included plenty of white people in it and I have plenty of issues with them too.
And no I don’t think the rightist immigration restrictionists of today, the neo-Nazis, the old rural yokels or the upper-class WASP Urban Elites of the past have the answers either today or yesterday and all have had some pretty terrible ideas.
“demographic change” isn’t so much the issue but how it changes society. And yes I am aware that society is made up of individuals. Will these changes not change the basic classical liberal values? If so what can be done? Public School was one such solution but that didn’t work out. Genocide, Eugenicism or free shit to the right people is not liberal (despite the rather questionable behavior of “liberal” European colonialists but whatever) and inhumane not to mention TOP MEN so that is out of the picture. Spencerian pessimism?
I see this escalated while I enjoyed my evening repast followed by my postprandial perambulation.
Demographic changes cause marketing itself? No. But the aggregate aesthetic preferences of a certain cohort cause certain marketing trends, yes.
Bad in what way and to whom? It’s like saying ‘the weather is bad’. I don’t think you can phrase that so it is a universal for all people for all time.
I believe there is a short term and a long term answer. The long term answer is that nothing can be done. I am a Buddhist: everything changes, nothing is eternal. Think about the concept of mappo. As for the short term, all cultures have some sort of process of socialization in which the norms and expectations of the society transmitted to the next generation or to newcomers to the culture. Are you familiar with the arguments of Lave and Wenger? You are correct that public schooling failed at this task, and failed miserably. The question remains, though, was it the tool or the user that was at fault? Nevertheless, humans seem to have a natural inclination to accommodate the behaviors, attitudes, and values of people they interact with. Without heavy-handed social engineering to get in the way, I posit that a community founded on classically liberal values would be resilient enough to socialize newcomers into the value system by way of natural human interaction.
tarran pretty much called me a Nazi. No big deal..oh wait. Then again maybe “demographic change” has certain sinister connotations especially to him but I was speaking more of general overarching values rather than immigration or race or ethnicity themselves though those 3 do play a part.
Well let’s say that these changes result in people thinking that free speech and freedom of association are an out of date value of racists who only used them self-servingly.
I think the tool is more at fault. First some TOP MAN appointed by someone has to decide whatever values “society” needs to have which is inherently troublesome as there are always going to be people who don’t like certain values of “society” let alone what those values are and why we should agree with them that those values are good.
Then you have the fact that why wouldn’t said TOP MAN define those values are support for him and his ideology? And for liberalism well government employees teaching kids to distrust government is rather problematic and eventually lead to government employees teaching kids to love Big Government.
Of course this means that you will need enough people who oppose that “heavy-handed social engineering” and support those “classically liberal values” for that to not happen.
This does seem to suggest immigrate should assimilate somewhat and there is something about the “native” culture worth preserving.
Also do you think it possible for too many immigrants to “overwhelm society” and make the “natives” assimilate with them instead?
It’s nonsense. Even if you take him at face-value (“I’m not an activist!”), what he’s doing is letting the inmates run the asylum. He doesn’t seem to notice that he’s become one of the inmates himself.
Oh, he knows it. He also knows that most investors are not woke, though
And he knows the law favors entrenched woke management over investors.
To paraphrase John Derbyshire: “Remember when you used to go to work to well… work?”
This was the same guy who, after gay marriage was made legal, insisted that now the “survivors need to be shot”.
So, this guy will probably get the Bastiat Award from Reason, considering that neocons even get that award now.
“They will see, as they’ve always seen, how amazing it will be,” Benioff replied with self-assurance. “It’s just a spectacular combination.”
“And even if they don’t. Hell, even if they’re proven absolutely right and we completely screw the pooch with this merger, I’m still going to get an outsized salary. And I’ve rigged the laws so utterly in my favor versus investors that, even if I give away their profits to the social justice cadres for the next ten years, their only practical option will be to sell the stock at a loss and let me continue to do so.”
Dear Baptists,
Help us!
Love, The Bootleggers
The legal marijuana industry urged Los Angeles City Hall on Monday to get tougher with illegal shops that are gouging their businesses in open sight.
Illegal pot shops are widespread throughout Los Angeles and typically look like the real thing. And they’re thriving — they sell cheaper products than their legal rivals because they don’t charge hefty state and local taxes.
In a letter Monday, the industry group Southern California Coalition recommended the city consider seizing cannabis inventory and cash from illegal shops that are found to be selling tainted products.
In the legal market, marijuana, concentrates, cookies and other products must be tested by independent labs for consumer safety — a requirement that illegal shops can ignore.
The group said that the failure to seize cash and pot products from illegal shops after raids allows the business to quickly reopen.
I like how they skip merrily from the “No test certificate” base to the “MUH TAINTED PRODUX!” base.
And the ump calls, “SAFE!”
Also, profit disgorgement is your friend.
This product is tainted with marijuana!
Did you hear about the guy who had marijuana fall out of his taint, then shot himself in the nuts? Lemme see if I can find a link…
Whispers: Marijuana has not been legalized, a new cartel took over the operations.
If government was not being paid by taxes or by the kind of borrowing with debt payments paid by taxes, then the illegal shops would not have an unfair tax advantage.

What? What’s wrong with China? Last I heard from CNN orange man bad for not befriending China.
Or for befriending China. Whatever he’s doing that day!
True.
“Trump is too chummy with dictators” is usually followed by “why is Trump so antagonistic with China?”
I saw the most unintentionally hilarious, Front Line episode ever called “Trump’s Trade War”. The entire episode featured people befuddled over why anyone would ever want to impose tariffs on China.
Right or wrong, the notion of instituting tariffs against China is not some new bizarre concept, but it’s funny to watch people pretend like orange man not normal when he is more normal than they want to admit
Even the anti-Trump “Liberal World Order” types seem to distrust China these days. How exactly one is supposed to deal with China is unclear especially since these types most certainly support foreign intervention.

And so did coal. And steel and iron. And trains. And cattle. etc etc
So might as well totally transform the entire economy to rid it of the stain of slavery/ SJW
I have a modest proposal – since slavery lead to the US being the unprecedented economic powerhouse it is today, the solution to ensure future growth is to reintroduce slavery.
What do you think progressives are trying to do, silly?
Anything contemporanious has “deep roots” in everything else. Ergo, since we can point to one thing that we all agree is bad, we can draw a directly line to literally everything else, including the NY Review of Books, and dismiss it as having “deep roots in the Southern slave economy.” Easy piesy lemon squeezy.
New York City was heavily connected with the Slave Economy so that would be easy…

Another well-formed, grammatical sentence as devoid of semantic meaning as ‘Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.’
Did that come from the Friedman Random Column Generator?
Noam Chomsky, actually.
Come to think of it, he used it as an example to falsify the argument that human grammar is stochastic.
Only Rothbardians like Chomsky, because of his foreign policy.

Give us more money or we’ll commit crime.
something government something Mafia
Well, it’s the logical proggy extension of the Dallas DA’s office officially making shoplifting “necessities” legal.
You know, I’m fine with that if they make it legal for the shop owners to shoot shoplifters
To be fair I think that was one of the reasons for justify giving politicians a salary in the first place.
That better be one fucking huge cost of living increase if it’s supposed to offset the “dark money loopholes”.
“Me taking money from you is good. It’s even, dare I say, woke. Now clap like seals, you tax cattle”
They would not be ‘tax cattle’ if government was not being paid by taxes or by the kind of borrowing with debt payments paid by taxes. Donation not taxation.
If you are trying to be tedious, you are succeeding.
Wasn’t the raise around $4300? I don’t think that’ll satiate the congressional moneylust. If they had any stones they’d just pass it and rely on the dismal memory of the American people to forget it happened.
Love the comments.
That $4000 extra in salary is the difference between honesty and a life of crime and corruption.
She could make that on chaturbate in a weekend.
go on…
How do you know she isn’t already?

Emotional manipulation for political and financial gain.
It’s the socialist way.
Is she implying that she will otherwise put that dark money in her pocket, or is she implying that she will now use her own money to fund her campaign?
I’m not sure what she’s implying but I’m inferring she doesn’t actually know what dark money is and/or how campaigns are financed. But it’s bad.
This girl gets it:
“@txtiger1
The truth is, you’ll vote yourself a pay raise AND be corrupt.

People defending it….not so much. You gotta do better than ‘D.C. is expensive’ and ‘they two residences!” What the frick?
Gladly most seem to call her out.
In NY they agreed to a huge raise + strict limits on outside income “because it’s a full-time job”. Now they’re working to eliminate the limits on outside income.
At what point are they making enough money to ignore this “dark money”? $1 million per year? $10 million? $20 million?
I think we should increase their chocolate ration immediately.
Give us more money or we’ll commit crime.
Someone with the photoshop skills should make a riff on that famous National Lampoon “or we’ll shoot this dog” cover for AOC’s comment here.
Libertarians think exploiting loopholes is criminal?
Must be that new brand of libertarianism that thinks not talking to the FBI is obstruction of justice
Who’s saying that?
No one. I was agreeing
“The Russia investigation was totally legitimate. We can trust the FBI. What do you have against the CIA, bigot? A legislature voting for a pay raise is not stealing, because government is the only thing we do together.”

Electric vehicles for local fleets in mild climates probably make sense, depending on the circumstances (like overall cost of ownership). But they’re not going to save the planet.
Of course the power doesn’t come out of thin air, dummy. It comes out of the wall.
I saw a youtube video that said it comes from the wires. As in the powerlines create the electricity and all the power plants are a ruse so people won’t figure out all it takes is to hang wire in the air the get electricity. Science!
To be fair, you do get electricity from the wire. Albeit in exceedingly large doses at unpredictable intervals.
It comes out of ‘the holes’.

That’s quite a conclusion based on that sample.

A: They have to get home before dark.
I once knew a woman who would explain at great length and detail about all of the things wrong in the world, the root cause of which is imbalance. The world is out of balance. All we have to do is get everyone to walk to one side of the world to get it back in balance and all of our problems will be gone.

90° F / 32° C and 27% RH on my back deck right now. The A/C’s on and it’s wonderful. The house packers arrive tomorrow, which is supposed to be hotter than today, so I hope they appreciate it.
Chomping at the bit.
My son ran back to his apartment in Long Beach to avoid the heat wave. It’s 102 at our house now.
He drove 6 hours to get away from your heat wave??
That, and he was bored at home and his friends were down there.
We’re in the high 80s this week with teenage level humidity. Glorious weather.

So I’m pretty much fully into production now, which means staring at sheets and sheets of construction documents and trying to work out wth the engineer’s red marks mean. And someday, if I’m a good boy, I’ll get paid a real wage for it.
Waaaaay-OT for the medicos on here: both my wife and I have recently had a bout of some cold/virus thingie which is incredibly slow to resolve (two months later and we’re still coughing lightly and infrequently). As part of a recent physical we both got our blood-work done and we both scored low enough on white blood cell count that our GP’s a bit alarmed.
Now, mine’s never been high — an earlier report from 2.5 years ago shows me just barely in the low part of the “normal” range (around 4.3), and I wasn’t having any issues then. Now it’s at 3.8 x 10*9/L, and anything below 4.0 gives ’em pause.
I’m of the opinion that this is just no big deal, but the wife’s a bit worried. ???
Being sick that long could deplete your immune system. I wouldn’t worry about it unless subsequent testing continues with those types of results.
I had a light cough for a very long time. Every morning, I woke up very stuffed up and had to clear it up in a steamy shower.
I went to an allergy specialist. Nothing on the tests.
On a hunch, the guy tested me for an immune deficiency to certain bacteria. Apparently, my immune system doesn’t recognize certain strains of pneumococcal bacteria very well. And my bloodwork did come back with the low end of normal on WBC.
The fix was a PPSV vaccine booster every so often, and now even better since it came out, the Prevnar 13 vaccine.
If I’m congested for more than a week, I know it’s not the virus.
Ask your doc about your risk factors before blowing money on the tests.
Interesting. Thanks!
Don’t listen to any of these idiots.
You have GRID.

But I’m not related to any gays! (Well, that I know of, anyways . . . )
OK, now I remember us talking about Hawaii.
Maybe you are slightly immunodeficient.
Also, swim in the pool.
Er, pool? Must be the G&T I’m drinking, I’m not tracking that comment very well.
You got sick in Hawaii, iirc.
I thought it would have been a pathogen from a poorly chlorinated pool (some of the resorts have fresh water, un-chlorinated pools).
Then you dropped the bomb. You haven’t been swimming in years.
Then you dropped the bomb. You haven’t been swimming in years.
Correct. (More like decades, actually.) I believe I got the infection from some “homemade” Poha Berry jam I bought in a little gas-station-cum-trading-post place near Volcano Village on the Big Island — I didn’t partake of the jam until after I’d returned home. The doctor who saw me afterwards probably misdiagnosed me as having beaver fever when it was much more likely to be something like Crypto.
And that, ladies and germs, is how you get a lifelong case of IBS. :-/

Based on the Gen Z’ers I know, possibly not even that.

My brother is now in touch with his 1/2 brother. The brother has been looking for my brother for 30 years. This all happened over the weekend with and Ancestry DNA result and some messaging back & forth.

Write it up!
Very cool!

Is your brother your full brother (same parents)? If so, wouldn’t that make the 1/2 brother your 1/2 brother also?
I haz confuse.
Regardless, congrats!
