Good morning my Glibs and Gliberinas! And what a glorious morning it is as Crazy Eyes is now attacking Pelosi implying she’s a racist. And also, in typical Millennial fashion, bitching about all the work assigned to her that she personally requested.

Mornin’ Banjos! Thanks for the links:)
New Orleans flooded.
Maybe don’t build in the swamp?
Good afternoon
Now you are talking crazy. Besides, half of the country of the Netherlands exists because of the dykes (not the ones that are into chicks) that hold out the North Sea, and they made it work. New Orleans’ problem is the people running it…
But should the Netherlands exists is the question. Actually what you could do is get rid of Belgium (pointless) and move Netherlands where Belgium is now
Careful there Pie… you’re threatening some of the oldest and best breweries in the world there.
there are good breweries in Belgium? Which ones?
Off the top of my head… Duvel Moortgat, St. Bernardus, Chimay, Cantillon, Fantome, Orval, Westvleteren, and Boon .
Do they not make the overly sweet and alcoholic Belgian beer styles?
Cantillon, Orval, and Boon specialize in sours.
Fantome does mildly sour saisons.
Duvel, Chimay, Westvleteren, and St. Bernardus do the traditional Belgian styles. But I’d hesitate to call a golden strong sweet, or any of the Wit beers they do sweet. They are known for the stronger beer styles though.
I’m having a hard time putting the words “overly” and “alcoholic” together in a way that makes sense…
Naptown Bill: Too much fusel alcohol in your beer will give it a solvent characteristic or make the beer feel/taste “hot”.
I know, I was being facetious. I’ve made overly “boozy” beers because I pitched too soon, usually in the summer when I was having trouble getting the wort down to temp in time.
That’s the point.
There are only two things in the world that I cannot tolerate. People who are intolerant of other people’s cultures… and the Dutch.
I went on a hiking trip in Europe last year. There were a lot of Belgians on the trail. They seemed almost Japanese in their neatness and orderliness*, and how nerdy the males were and beautiful the females were.
*One group of teens would pull over at a whistle from their leader to let us faster hikers through with the synchrony of a military unit.
There’s a STEVE SMITH joke somewhere in there.
Isn’t there always:)
And if there wasnt he’d force it in anyways.
get rid of Belgium (pointless)
A country that makes the world’s finest beers and chocolate? Not to mention gifting the world moules et frittes?
Shut your whore mouth!
belgian beer sucks !
I don’t know enough about the engineering involved in the Netherlands, but the problem with NOLA is that you are trying to prevent one of the biggest rivers in the world from doing what rivers do by using the always inept Army Corps of Engineers.
I took a couple classes at Memphis State from a prof who studied the Mississippi and the physics involved and NOLA was one of his pet peeves. Normally a giant river like the Mississippi’s delta gradually moves as silt is deposited. The problem is when you spend so much money on a place like NOLA, you don’t want the mouth to naturally move somewhere else, so you bring in the Army Corps of Engineers to try to keep everything just the way it is.
It is pretty much a losing battle, but that doesn’t mean people won’t squawk as the Mighty Mississippi slowly grinds down NOLA.
It’s
Bush’sTrump’s fault, no matter what happens.+1 Brownie
This little storm is going to push 3-5 feet of surge all the way up the big river to Baton Rouge. Shouldn’t be a big deal for properties for the most part, but I don’t think people really understand that nature really wants to do it’s own thing.

AOC. Like herpes, the gift that keeps on giving! Mornin’ Banjos!
I’ve wondered before if she isn’t actually a conservative engaging in one of history’s greatest pieces of performance art.
Ask yourself this, what would such a person do differently?
Pick a fake name with the initials MAO instead of AOC.
Michelle Obama, soooo close. Fucking “LaVaughn”, her parents just couldn’t pick “Ambrojya” or “Aimme”.
Be more subtle? The real thing strains credulity well past the breaking point.
You’d think. But, she’s got huge swaths of Democrats and the media actually defending her insanity. It should defy credulity. But, people are obviously buying into it.
She takes the mask off and its…. James Okeefe!

17 year old CA girl shot dead in CA by cops days ago, no explanation still has been provided. – do you really need a reason to shoot a teen?
They’re still waiting to see if there is any video or witnesses that would contradict their bullshit justification story.
Also remember that cops get a time-out before they have to testify, so that they can get their stories straight. A courtesy not extended to the “little people” who pay their salaries.
Regarding the music, my mom bought a single President’s of the USA album just for the Cleveland Rocks cover. I never did ask her if she listened to any of the other tracks.

Seize Him!
I cannot overstate how much joy I’m getting from the Dem upstarts in Congress labeling Pelosi/Biden/et al racists. They created this identity politics monster and its about to eat them. Wonderful.
It really is wonderful to see.
…and the minute a significant number of non-flagellant wypipo decide to take the identitarian viewpoint the Democratic party is toast.
Which would then be time to shatter the Republican party, but no doubt there’d be some sort of reshuffling resulting in two separately but equally bad parties.
I’m right there with you. #Delicious.
POTUSA is an underrated band.
“… suggesting that the speaker is “singling out” her and her colleagues based on their race.” I don’t know why AOC even needs to bother explaining it this much. The old broad is white as wonder bread. “Racist” is a given.
and Mornin’ Banjos!
I hope this identity politics shit has them all eating each other up until the whole thing is broken.
I fear that your hope is misplaced, Alex. They won’t stop because it’s all that they know. “Dog will hunt”.
And when said dog “gets” the 18 wheeler’s tire and is run over that dog will no longer be part of the problem. Maybe I am being naive in thinking that this stuff will end the practice as all of them go down because of this stupid shit, but one has to have dreams….
An election is coming and you can bet some run of the mill Dems in their districts are planning how to primary their asses and win with massive financial support. Two or three of these clowns will probably be one-term congresscritters. Lesser of two evils will replace them.
Fat Is Not the Problem—Fat Stigma Is
“Health experts” are sending incorrect and destructive messages about the relationship between weight and wellness
https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/fat-is-not-the-problem-fat-stigma-is/
When the culture and the medical world are constantly pushing the idea that “obesity” needs to be eliminated, it’s not the fat cells that are feeling that stigma—it’s the fat people. This hierarchy of bodies is nothing new, with roots in racism, slavery and every other attempt to rank bodies. We can no longer pretend that being less likely to be hired or get promotions, being paid less, receiving biased medical treatment, being socially excluded and bullied are attempts to help people “be healthier.” These are the direct consequences of living in a culture that vilifies and fears fat bodies and that treats the people living in them as morally lesser beings.

From her twitter:
I don’t see it as an indictment of capitalism that the poor are fat.
If we had a good equitable culture like Venezuela it would solve the obesity problem. Tell me I am wrong
I got nothing….
Is rat like rabbit? Not enough fat to keep you alive?
It is true that many diseases are more commonly found in heavier people. However, that doesn’t mean that weight itself causes disease. Blaming fatness for heart disease is similar to blaming yellow teeth for lung cancer, rather than considering that smoking might play a role in both. And telling people they need to lose weight is a lot like telling someone with a cold to stop sneezing so much—it may not be possible and won’t make the cold go away.
Wut
Dude, it’s just science!
Jesus Christ, the stupid, it burns!
It’s because these people have been thought the truth is whatever they want it to be…
It’s always been a weird feeling – whenever my sister says something to blame her obesity on genetics I know it would be considered rude to point out that we have the same genes and are less than two years different in age but I have never been more than maybe 5 lbs over my ideal weight. I don’t even want to mention anything about when I hit some fitness goal on FB for fear that I would get pushback from my family.
Unless you are identical twins, you don’t have the game genes, and hunger signalling is pretty strongly influenced by genes. Non-identical siblings show behavior based phenotype expressions (IE how similar their behavior is) at about 80%. If you have a long time horizon, there’s a 20% chance she doesn’t. If you have high levels of spirituality, there’s a 20% chance she doesn’t. If she has a high level of hunger, there’s a 20% chance you don’t.
I have a pretty high hunger expression – I find it difficult to get through the afternoon without snacking. But I have always been obsessive about what I’m eating and exercise. I know this obsessiveness is tiresome to most people and that’s one of the reasons why I don’t care to broadcast that stuff in social media. But sometimes I wish I could broach the subject with people in my family so I might have a chance to help them – but I doubt it would have much impact in the way I intend it.
You’d be fun to take camping.
I’m a lot of fun camping. Here’s my story from last time I went camping with a few cub scout packs:
I’m what science refers to as a “burly man.” In the next campsite, there was a leader named Terry, who’s only 5’9″ or so, but he’s jacked as fuck. He threw shot in college and has been body building since then. I’m built more like a 6’4″, 320 lb Shrek.
First night, all the leaders were standing around in a few circles, and Terry and I were in one, shooting the shit since we’re friends. Unbeknownst to us, a couple of the other circles started a debate – who would win in a fight? Leap or Terry? No consensus came out. Terry is probably in better shape, but I apparently had a crazy look in my eye, and I didn’t have any gel in my hair and its entered full jew-afro phase.
Unbeknownst to me or Terry, this is like the talk of the camp all day Saturday. Saturday evening, I show up with my knife at the axe-yard and bust up a few arm-thick branches by hacking a notch in them, setting one end on a bench, and stomping on this.
This apparently swung the odds pretty hard in my favor.
last day of camp, and I go to the trading post and find the single 3XL shirt for sale and buy it. Just as I walk out, Terry shows up and finds out he won’t be getting a shirt. He just looks a little sad and says to his kid “Oh well, Leap got the last one.”
At this point, a bunch of the dads around us start busting out in laughter and making fun of the few hold outs that were adamant that Terry would beat me. They finally clue Terry and me in. I said “Terry and I are friends, we wouldn’t fight.” Terry says “Yeah, and if we did, he’d probably chew out my throat and throw my body into traffic.”
I kept that shirt.
We literally tell people with a cold to stop sneezing so much, because it spreads germs.
I tell them to go home, but that’s just me.
“telling people they need to lose weight”
The body will tell you in subtle ways, like a triple bypass, that it’s time to lose weight. See people start a walking regimen when the ticker reinforces what the doctor has been saying for years.
There were no triple bypasses before capitalism, therefore capitalism causes heart disease, QED.
I’m fat and I have no one to blame but myself – bacon.
This is so stupid. So, so stupid.
People are generally speaking attracted to people that seem like the best mates; in heterosexual relationships, this typically means men are attracted to women who look like they’ll be good at having babies, and women are attracted to men that look like they’ll be good protectors and providers. Both are attracted to people who look healthy and successful. The successful bit is what tends to vary, because while the attraction seems to happen at a subconscious level the indicators of success vary with culture. In western European culture, for instance, pale and chubby read as someone with enough money to be overweight and enough social standing to not have to work outside. In the modern era, thanks to a largely service-based economy and incredibly cheap and plentiful food, those same qualities are demonstrated by having a tan and being slim, i.e. having enough time and money to spend laying around in the sun, working out, and/or being wealthy enough to be able to afford to not eat or eat a lower-calorie diet, if that makes sense.
“At some point, the two vehicles made physical contact. An officer-involved shooting occurred and a replica Beretta 92 FS handgun was recovered at the scene next to the female.”
Paint was traded.
Justice was served.
Dude didn’t even have the courtesy to have a real throw down gun.
Try to imagine how fucked in the head you must be to murder a chubby 17 year-old girl on the freeway. “Ah feared for mah Life!”
I was thinking that to. As a cop you don’t even need a “real” plant gun. Just buy some toy guns from Amazon , snap off the orange part and presto! Instant “fear for my life”
Google up “when lawmen lie.” It’s a free book about a sheriff in LA in sixties who gets convicted and goes to prison for planting a gun after shooting a kid. Cool story.
Interesting. I’m assuming that they knew it was a replica 92FS because the replica 92G has a replica decocker-only?
That would indicate that the gun was not real (probably an airsoft pellet gun), but the DA’s statement seems to be deliberately confusing the issue by making it sound like it’s still a real gun. That’s a pretty good indicator that bad shit went down, and they’re in CYA mode while they decide if they want to hang this on the cop or not.
I loved AOC’s recent freak-out about people using the term “catfight”. Man, Imma just keep having this popcorn while watching her got at Pelosi’s throat. Classic left on left action.

I’m going to say it, because in all the idiocy surrounding everything she does, I never saw it said: she looked super dooper hawt in that dancing video. My only dating dealbreakers are 1) crazy eyes and 2) Puerto Ricans, so 2019 AOC is a solid no for me.
I don’t think she’s going to age well.

Nancy Pelosi is tied into the old Baltimore Democratic machine. Her maiden name is D’Alessandro, and her dad was mayor of Baltimore as well as a state rep for several years. It’s, uh, not unlikely that he had some ties to, um, Italian-American civic clubs that, uh, made contributions to various political campaigns and so forth. Now, I don’t know what if any ties Pelosi has to those…organizations…but DC is maybe a 45 minute drive from Baltimore, and if you told me that AOC had a sudden change of heart and started meekly towing the party lion virtually overnight until she voluntarily resigned from office I wouldn’t be at all surprised.
Keeping it all in the Family?
I think she will get primaried next year and problem solved the easy way.
Bishop will take to the skies to exorcise entire Colombian city
Army to provide helicopter for sprinkling of holy water on area beset by violent crime
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jul/10/bishop-take-skies-exorcise-colombian-city-helicopter-buenaventura
A Colombian bishop is planning to exorcise an entire city this weekend, sprinkling holy water from a helicopter.
Monsignor Rubén Darío Jaramillo Montoya, the bishop of Buenaventura, will say a prayer intended to purge the area of demonic infestation.
The city is beset by violence, drug smuggling and poverty. Montoya disclosed the exorcism shortly after a 10-year-old girl was tortured and murdered.
He told local radio: “We have to drive the devil out of Buenaventura, to see if we can restore the peace and tranquility that our city has lost due to so many crimes, acts of corruption and with so much evil and drug trafficking that invades our port.
Sounds legit /most Catholics.

Nailed it. And as I noted yesterday she’d be bitching even louder had she been given fewer committee assignments than anyone else – “shut out of power.”
Morning!
I keep waiting for Pelosi to snap and use the powers of The Machine to grind up AOC.
Count Potato posted an apt video last night.
AOC’s loud ranting finally pushing AOC one step too far.
Unlike Napoleon, AOC’s problem isn’t that she’s too short. It’s that her ass is too skinny.
I like em’ short and skinny. I live in L.A.
No ass at all.
She’s built like a yardstick. When you’ve got a body like that you’ve gotta have a really striking face–she doesn’t–or you’ve got to be cool as hell–she’s not. That leaves cunning, and given her tangling with Boss Pelosi I don’t think she’s got much of that, either.
That second link is further evidence of my Conservation of Mediterranean Heightgression principle, which states that for each and every Mediterranian man, the sum of their height plus the sum of their aggression is a constant. I have yet to find a single counter example.
This hierarchy of bodies is nothing new, with roots in racism, slavery and every other attempt to rank bodies.
Yup.

Ooh, that’s some serious sciencing, there.
Ugh. That term “bodies” makes me want to chew tinfoil just to get the taste out my mouth. It was like when “woke” started trending and I had to huff paint to keep a level head.

The battle between California lawmakers and ridesharing companies such as Uber and Lyft heated up Wednesday as Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon offered harsh words laced with expletives for businesses in the gig economy.
“They use a lot of really cute words basically to describe the same old (expletive) that they’ve been doing for a really long time. People keep acting like they’ve invented new things — it’s the same old thing. It’s about corporations trying to oppress workers,” Rendon, a Democrat, said to cheers at a rally on the Capitol steps. “When you hear about folks talking about the new economy, the gig economy, the innovation economy, it’s (expletive) feudalism, all over again.”
That job sucks. I’d rather see you starve.
Because the drivers are forced at gunpoint to drive for these companies, under the stated terms? Or do they agree voluntarily?
The drivers are levied when surge pricing happens, didn’t you know that?
Fortunately I have not yet run into any of Lyft or Uber’s press gangs roaming the streets.
It is like temp agencies never existed.
When I was a broke student, any break in school had me at a temp agency picking up extra shifts to make money. It would have been awesome to be able to do stuff like drive for Uber and cut out the middle man.
Yeah, before I worked full time I would do Uber in between gigs at my main income skill thang. It was great. I could schedule it around seeing my son and work as little or as much as I pleased. Almost always had a pleasant chat with the riders.
He uses curse words! How edgy and cool!
Not that my vocabulary is free from profanity by any means, but it’s so tedious when politicians think that cursing in speeches makes them sound “authentic”

I knew a guy when I was living in Memphis who had been an undercover investigator for Yum brand stores. He would be sent to stores that corporate thought were up to something and figure out what was going on.
One time he went to a Taco Bell in Nashville to check them out. Corporate was suspicious because the store was reporting way higher profits than it historically had. This guy worked there a couple weeks and cracked the case.
The manager had signed up for a program with the county to employ guys who were in the county work house. The bus from the jail would pull up and a bunch of convicts would get off and clock in. Then after the bus left the convicts would leave and go do whatever they wanted for the day. They just needed to be back in 8 hours so they could get back on the bus. The convicts would sign over most of their checks to the manager in return.
The reason profits were up was because the manager didn’t want anything to fuck up his action, so he didn’t skim anything from the daily take.
i can’t remember if the law got involved afterwards or if Yum just canned the manager and hushed things up.
That seems like something from a movie
The one where Tom Hanks tells the clit flickers playing baseball that there is no crying in baseball?
Or the one where Paul Newman eats lots of eggs?
“Takin’ off, boss!”
“Shaking the bush boss” is my preferred quote from that movie.
I rather like “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.”
“Slidin my meat in this warm, pliable soft taco boss.”
+1 Callback!
That sounds like the equivalent of getting busted when your parents come back from vacation because the house is way too clean.
How were profits up by cutting checks for employees that didn’t contribute to generating revenue?
Because the manager wasn’t skimming (and there were less workers on a shift to skim their piece too). The old manager had been skimming his piece of the action before, so when all the money was being reported to corporate, it took a suspicious jump up.
One of the things I learned from working with restaurants is that everyone steals money. The hope is to limit it to an acceptable level.

France plans to put an “ecotax” on nearly all airline flights starting in 2020, French Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne said Tuesday. The new tax could bring in some $200 million annually that would support modes of travel that pollute less — such as trains.
“With the eco-contribution, air transport will play its part in financing the daily transport of all our citizens,” Borne said via Twitter. She added, “It is a response to the ecological urgency and sense of injustice expressed by the French.”
Yeah, I don’t get it.
Go long on airlines servicing Belgium and Luxembourg.
Yup. This guy gets it…
You could wipe the nation of France from the face of the earth and as long as the Chinese stay the course it wouldn’t make a drop in the ocean’s worth of difference.

AOC: Back when I was in Marine Radio School we had this “Dark Green” Marine in our class who developed an attitude problem and eventually accused our Platoon Sergeant of racism. The other Black guys in the class had already tried to talk sense into him and failed.
The moment the accusation left that kid’s mouth, our Sgt. marched him down to the Sgt. Major’s office. The Sgt. Major was also Dark Green, a week away from retirement, a Chosin Reservoir Vet (making him a rockstar in the Corps), and the absolute last man you want to cross. We could hear him yelling from down the street. Our idiot classmate return a while later with a serious attitude adjustment.
Something like this certainly would cure the stupidity the civilian world endures because of having to deal with this identity politics shit from these people that always want to prtend the problem is other people and not them.
The sad thing is young black folks in America have a multitude of voices telling them all kinds of wrong and harmful stuff from a young age. Some shrug it off, some don’t. For example, I was at the park talking to a hot mom while our sons played, both under 5. Her kid yelled something at her about his “white friend”. I asked her how he even knew about stuff like that at his age. She said people in her family just drive it into him that he is different.
That’s a damn shame. I’m glad at least my sisters’ kids and her neighbor’s kids have been getting along perfectly and afaik, it doesn’t look like they’re being taught that crap.
So did she put out?
When my youngest was very little, we’d go to the community center indoor pool a lot during the winter. He’d swim while I talked to the milfs there. Then he’d finally get so cold he’d come out of the water and put on his towel/robe that had a hood that looked like and elephant’s head and shiver for a bit before going back in. He did look super cute while wearing his elephant cape.
I thought about how hard it would be to teach him the following phrases: “Daddy what is a widower, that kid over there called you that” and “Do you think Mommy can look down and see us now?”.
In the end, I think I could have trained him pretty easily, but he is such a chatty kid, I don’t think I could have kept him quiet at home. He would have blabbed for sure to my wife about our little “game”.
Yeah, good call on your part…
I have it on good authority that Asian women believe they are entitled to cut off your junk if they feel slighted…
Hah! That’s brilliant!
I remember the CC swimming lesson days when I would usually be the only dad in a class full of hot moms. Good times.
She excused herself to go watch a basketball game at the court nearby. I got the feeling she was already interested in one of the guys playing. Never bumped into her again.
You had a Frozen Chosin vet as your sgt maj? Damn, you’re OLD!!! haha
Yep. That was ’89. The base brass had a big to-do to send him off into retirement.

If you are nostalgic for the Communist past in Europe can’t you just read the latest EU diktat and enjoy the Communist present?
I think the fascists actually won in Europe. It is a softer fascism, where the death camps have been replaced with a bureaucracy that simply marginalizes those that piss it off and cuts their ability to make a living or suck at the government’s teat off, than the old one, but it is fascism nevertheless.
Yes. A techno-version of Kafka that uses process to crush any contrary idea.
But as long as one can visit scotish distileries soft fascism aint all that bad

Instagram is rolling out a feature that will urge users to think twice before posting hateful comments, in an effort to minimize cyberbullying on the massive social media platform.
The new feature uses artificial intelligence to screen content and notify users if their post may be harmful or offensive. Users will see a message: “Are you sure you want to post this?” They will then have the option to remove or change the comment before anyone else is able to see it.
—–
Other social media platforms have made attempts to monitor the type of content allowed on their platforms. Twitter has started to flag hateful or offensive tweets from politicians, and Facebook has banned some white supremacists and other accounts for hateful or offensive posts. But there is no hard-and-fast rule for what these platforms are expected to restrict.
Monitoring harmful content on social media is challenging. Justin Patchin, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center, says he works with different platforms that are trying to find a solution to this problem.
The Thought Police have their all-seeing eye on you.

Signs of the Apocalypse
The appearance of bowing to Mr. Trump’s wishes can’t be helped, and should not be avoided. Mr. Powell and his colleagues have said repeatedly that they are only concerned with doing the right thing. They can find their vindication in the performance of the economy. And in the long run, as records are disclosed and memoirs published, their motivations will become a part of the historical record. (If the Fed bends to the president’s will, that, too, would inevitably become a part of the public record. The Fed’s capitulation to President Richard Nixon in the early 1970s, hidden from the public at the time, is now a lasting stain on its history.)
Most of all, the argument for a rate cut is that the Fed should try to extend this economic expansion, which is now the longest period of uninterrupted growth in American history.
——
A rate cut of a quarter of a percentage point in July would be a small shift; it wouldn’t have much of a direct impact on economic conditions. It would, however, send a message that the Fed stands ready to do more to extend the economic expansion. Some argue that cutting now would limit the Fed’s ability to act if the economy weakens further. But the point of acting now is to forestall the need for stronger medicine.
It also would show that the Fed has learned from the past decade that the persistent weakness of inflation is a greater concern than the remote possibility that prices are about to blast off.
And it would demonstrate that Mr. Powell and his colleagues are serious when they talk about the importance of job growth and wage growth.
NYT editorial board agrees with Trump. To be sure, they throw in some caveats, but there it is.
Personally, I think rates are too low, and have been for a very long time. But what do I know?
When the NYT and Trump agree on something, I can pretty much guarantee that’s exactly what we shouldn’t do.
So, when do we get the “pay off the debt when the economy starts booming again” phase of Keynes?

What the hell was her fiance doing while she was getting groped multiple times? Must be one of those feminist male soyboys.
It reminds me of my wife’s cousin and her fiance at the time (now husband). He would sit separately at the bar and watch all night as men hit on the cousin, sat with her, and bought her drinks. Wasn’t a fetish thing, just too cheap to buy her drinks. She was smoking while he was not and a deadbeat to boot. We never understood it.
And why didn’t her fiance punch this guy? He groped her 3 times and her “man” didn’t do a thing about it?
Maybe he was unaware because it wasn’t obvious and she didn’t say anything?
Why didn’t she? My wife wouldn’t have hesitated to smack the shit out of the guy.
Very good point.
This was my thought too. Anyone doing that to my wife would get smacked in the mouth. I should know, she did it to me once early on when we were dating

Politicizing the Federal Reserve? It’s okay, when the right people do it.
And yet, the Fed’s policies attracted scant attention from the mainstream media or elected Democrats. An unthinking reverence for the central bank’s political independence kept the American public ignorant of — and unelected bureaucrats, unaccountable for — exercises of discretion that helped determine the availability of jobs, cost of credit, and distribution of wealth in the United States. Conservative Republicans may have been willing to threaten Fed governors with violence if they didn’t start fighting non-existent inflation — but liberal Democrats barely made a peep as Janet Yellen’s rate hikes needlessly jeopardized the job prospects of low-income workers (and Hillary Clinton).
——-
Tlaib and Ocasio-Cortez did not “politicize” the Fed in a partisan sense: AOC was effectively pressuring Powell to pursue an accommodative monetary policy that would improve Donald Trump’s chances of reelection (or so, Trump himself seems to think). But they did call attention to the fact that the Fed’s decisions are inescapably political, especially in the context of recessions. Among other things, the central bank has the power to prioritize the interests of creditors and corporations — or those of workers and city governments. And if elected officials who are accountable to the latter constituencies never apply political pressure on their behalf, experience suggests that the Fed may give the former’s interests undue precedence.
Blah blah blah, Gulag Barbie is so dreamy and brilliant, and stuff. She makes economics cool. And she’s, like, totally the smartest thing ever, and she should be Speaker of the House until she’s old enough to run for President.
And apparently that Tlaib person, wants the Fed to include municipal and state debt in their next go at Quantitative Easing- to Infinity and Beyond! I had not heard that.
Just give Soso’s Angels the reins and let it burn.

I am loving this move. When Obama did it and people warned that there would someday be someone from the other team that would get to do it, the cunts that loved Obama sticking it to their enemies told them to go pound sand. after all, they already knew Obama was weaponizing the bureaucracy – often using the pen to do so – and the other team was going to be toast. Now they are the ones getting it and they whine.

Re: AOC: Oh bitch. Ohhhhhh bitch. Did you just call Nancy Pelosi a racist? You better steal all the pens and notepads you can from your office because you’re gonna need them when you’re back waiting tables at Friday’s after Nancy wears your ass out.
AOC’s about to find out why Pelosi has the reputation she does.
Hell, that was probably dumber than going after Harry Reid when he was still around.
She made a serious blunder by not kissing Pelosi’s ass while she stockpiled allies. Now she is forcing the old witch to do something.
Pelosi’s as ruthless a political animal as you’ll find in DC and that’s no small feat.
Yep. I despise that woman, but only someone as dim-witted as Karla Marx would underestimate her in a political knife fight.
AOC is like that Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that barks at every dog it sees. She’s never been smacked down and she’s had so much smoke blown up her ass by party handlers that she has no sense of political self-preservation. This is either going to be a massive wake-up call for her or the end of her political career. I get the feeling that Nancy and Chuck are getting fed up with the kids mouthing off and are about ready to turn the car around.
I think this is about right. Add in the fact that we’re going into a presidential election year. And a bunch of anti-semitic kids screaming for socialism probably isn’t the image the party leadership wants for itself.
Every king needs a jester – as long as the jester knows better than to sit with the king’s court.
I feel like the PTB in the (D) party are giving them a bit of leash to get the people out of their seats and worked up. But the day will dawn (soon) when it will be time for the king’s court to take the stage. At that point the jester had best know where to sit.
OT: I spent the last three days in domestic mediator training . . . in the hope that – once I finish the class – I will get cases to mediate instead of litigating (which is getting me a bit burnt out).
So the class was 2/3 attorneys, the other was friend of the court people who are required to attend, and licensed social workers / people who mediate already but wanted extra training.
So of coursssse one of the FOC people tries to take over every topic – because she’s former law enforcement who couldn’t get a job otherwise. Her voice was fingernails on the chalkboard to me. It’s just been my experience that these situations call for “gunners” or bullies to try to show “I already know this, see?” / end rant.
One of my few skills is the ability to shut down the bullies in meetings. I love it.
She did get shut down a few times…. It was nice.
Is that why you are always shushing me?
No, I’m just trying to keep us from being kicked out of the watering hole.
Everything I know about mediation I learned from It’s Always Sunny. Hope the change works out for you.

“FBI find remains of missing mom-of-four Savannah Spurlock, 23, at a house she went to with three men she met at a bar days after giving birth – and the same address cops searched SIX MONTHS ago days after she vanished – as home-owner is arrested
David Sparks, 24, was arrested early Thursday morning after the remains were uncovered on the property in Garrard County where he lives with his parents.
He was charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence.
Sparks is believed to be one of the three men last seen with the 23-year-old mother-of-four when surveillance video showed her leaving a bar in Lexington on January 4.
Police said Spurlock – who had given birth to twins in December – was driven to the rural home some 40 miles away after leaving the bar.”

I’d say there’s a lesson to be learned here but that’d be victim blaming. RIP.
mother of four at age 23……leaving a bar with three men days after giving birth….you can call me whatever names you want, but I’d say that lass made some rather poor decisions.
If you’re 23 years old and have four children, how are you leaving a bar late at night with three strange men “days” after giving birth? I’m not trying to tell people how to live…but…that’s the wrong way to live. Obviously.

Right wing extremists
Some of the right-wing media universe’s biggest stars are set to descend on the White House Thursday for what has been billed as a “social media summit” and will likely become a forum for airing claims of anti-conservative social media bias.
In addition to inviting leaders from traditional conservative think tanks, such as the Heritage Foundation and Claremont Institute, the White House has requested the presence of far-right internet personalities and trolls, some of whom have pushed conspiracy theories, lies and misinformation.
It’s perhaps the clearest example yet of President Trump legitimizing fringe political allies.
——–
It’s unclear exactly what will take place at Thursday’s summit. The White House has declined to release any information about the event, including a general format of how it will be conducted or what is expected of attendees.
One person who plans to attend, who spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity, said, “We’re not sure what to expect. We’re not sure if it’s going to even be about policy.”
“All I know is there is going to be a bunch of people in a room talking about social media,” the person added. “It could be just more general, it could be vague. You know the president will be there so it could go in a number of different directions.”
While the summit will include right-wing media personalities and people from conservative think tanks, it will not include representatives from the major social media companies. As first reported by CNN, neither Twitter nor Facebook received invitations to the event.
Only in Trump’s America could such an outrage occur.

That sure as hell seems to be the desperate attempt at the rewrite.
That quote from Trump about Epstein being a nice guy who likes his women young strikes me as naive more than anything.
One thing Trump is not, is naive. I think that quote is from after he booted Epstein from his property.
He’s on the list of people who knew (hell, everybody knew). At least he cut off any association with Epstein (as far as I know) after kicking him out.
Trump does seem to have an odd moral conservative streak.
I suppose someone can also be a “nice guy” to a particular audience and still be a complete monster. I’m sure Jeffrey Dahmer helped an old lady across the street at some point.

If this thing gets legs and forces the Klinton Klan to retaliate it could break out in guerilla warfare at all levels of the DNC. That would be spectacular! The main downside would be if the GOP had the brains and balls to take the field in the absence of any worthy foe. Lucky for us they are worthy enough of a self-generated foe to themselves that they could out-suck any political vacuum encountered.
Libertarian moment?
Writing catty, entitled teenage girls is harder than it sounds. I’ve been stuck with this stub of a scene for a while now, and it’s holding up making progress on Junior Redemptioners.
Way too succinct. You need the characters to dredge up old transgressions and veer off into unrelated battles.
‘Tis the way of the teenage girl.
Yes, yes, let the hate flow through you.
I understand the theory, but, staring at this paragraph’s worth of text on the screen, I can’t seem to conjure up the content.
Teenage girls tend to frame everything in terms of who gets the most favor from those in power, real or imagined, and focus their hate on them.
Imagine a tribe where the chief has a harem and all the non-harem females hate the harem girls and the harem itself is split among those competing for favor.
The problem is, complete accuracy would derail the scene from the plot-relevent components before these three go off and wreak havoc suitable for a response from powered heroes.
Another complicating factor is that one of then recently got advice which would only work for a group of boys, not a group of girls.
Though if I do get the verbal squabbling down, it would explain why the three set off separately instead of as a group.
I get a log of my tweener daughter’s texts every day. I can probably help.
My advice is to take one character and have the others focus all of their spite on that one person. There can be no sympathy.
why? isn’t that like invasion of privacy
She knows I get the logs. It’s part of the deal with the phone.
i find that strange… i would either not give a phone or give it and leave it at that.

Calls to boycott the retailer took off this week on social media as news spread that Marcus told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution late last month that he plans to support Trump’s bid for another term.
“If you plan on buying a hammer, wood, or ANY home improvement items from Home Depot, you may as well send donations DIRECTLY to trump’s 2020 campaign,” read one tweet under the hashtag #BoycottHomeDepot.
The twatter is a giant megaphone for village idiots.
Sorry bud, I don’t think you’re ever going to be normal.
This motherfucker has bought as many hammers and as much wood in his life as he has sent donations to Donald Trump’s election campaign. Maybe he should announce his boycott of Ruger and REP Fitness, too.
Hey! He built that crooked She Shed for his wife last year!
Trying to murder your wife via shed collapse isn’t very feminist, IMO.
If normalcy is a soft coup of law enforcement conspiring with apparatchiks with the aid and comfort of a propaganda-peddling media, you’re welcome to it.
I actually went to Home Depot yesterday and spend a small fortune to show my displeasure!
Hammer and wood?
Anybody who does real project involving wood knows you use screws and a cordless drill.
After I renovated my apartment I had a half-dozen batteries that had been charged so many time they wouldn’t hold a charge anymore. But my hammer still looked barely used.
Glue, peg, biscuit, mortise and tenon, and dovetail joints. Keep the metal out of the finished product.
In 1947, my Dad made a bedframe out of native wild cherry wood. The bed was a wedding present to my Mom when they married that year. They slept in that bed for 71 years, until Dad died last year. Mom still slept in it alone until she went into a nursing home a few months before she died.
I have the bed in storage now. I’ll probably set it up as a guest room bed.
And there isn’t a speck of metal in the bed. Everything in it is wood, pegged and glued together. Made with no power tools. Dad could make anything out of wood.
I love cherry wood, especially the way it ages and gets deeper and redder. We used to have a house with cherry cabinets; its the only thing I would change in our current house.
My kitchen cabinets (all cherry) were made by a childhood friend who had become a cabinetmaker cum contractor. Design was done via internet between Tokyo and PHX. I ended up driving ABQ to PHX to pick them up with a Ryder rental truck then put them in a 40 ft container and ship to Japan (with a couple tons of stuff – mostly Home Depot).
When I got to the point of installation my friend flew over to help.
Damn. That is impressive.
That is cool. I have a rope bed from probably the 1830s, and the frame posts screw together into the head and foot boards. All out of wood. I guess the maker would carve the threadings on a lathe?
And sorry to hear of the decline of your parents. They married a year before mine, who followed the same trajectory.
They slept in that bed for 71 years… I’ll probably set it up as a guest room bed.
Assuming with a mattress unstained by 71 years of AnimalParents Sex.
Yeah, nails, wood, and humidity are not super compatible. As my front porch demonstrates.
For home restoration/repair (think drywall) it’s screws, plywood, and 2X4’s. For carpentry it’s pegs or joints.
I’m trying to rack my brain for a correct use for a hammer and nail in this day and age but I don’t see it.
Temporary supports, if you don’t have the kind of screwjack/scaffolding rig they used to work on my back porch earlier this year.
Nailers and nailgun, maybe. That’s what we used for the addition last year.
Percussive maintenance and juvenile attitude modulation.
I call this one “The Persuader”
I’m trying to rack my brain for a correct use for a hammer and nail in this day and age
Worship.
Yeah, if there’s one thing that blue-voting urbanites are already doing, its spending a lot time using a hammer.
There’s a gigantic Home Depot plonked right in the middle of Manhattan that I used to live near and bought a shit-ton of tools at. Nothing serious, mind you, just stuff for small repairs. But that store is busy. I have a feeling that it’s not going to lose any business over these crybabies.
Interesting. Where the shoppers blue-voting Manhattanites, or the craftsmen and laborers working on their condos for them, then returning back to Long Island when the day is over?
I’d guess a mixture of both. Not everyone fits the stereotype.
Or eating chicken sandwiches from Chic-fil-a. Bitch, sit down. Nobody cares.
Marcus had a great response:
I like this guy.
Good for him.
Perfect. I wish more businesses would refuse to back down to the bullies.
IIRC, he has also claimed that he could never have founded HD in this anti-biz environment.
Thank you Fatty Bolger for posting that. Wonderful to hear from a truly successful man with respect to the mindless political zombies besieging him. May he live more years than he hopes for and continues his work.
Theory: the only reason these pathetic social media soycotts work is because the soy-brained wet farts in the marketing, legal, and PR departments are more sympathetic to the cause than to their employers. It’s like the EPA coordinating with watermelon pressure groups to bring legal action against the EPA to achieve what the EPA couldn’t do on its own.
Agreed.
It’s like government relations/lobbyists. They really don’t want government to get out of their employer’s business. They move from regulator to consultant to regulatee to trade association and back as the money flows.
And add Forest Service and a bunch of other agencies to that same model.
soycotts
Awesome.
Shit like this, is why I think donating to schools is a stupid idea. From the article;
“In the lawsuit filed in 2017, Hillsdale claims the university found the terms of the gift “distasteful” and was concerned MU and its Business School were being “held hostage by a particular ideology,” ultimately disputing that his gift resulted in a trust, according to the lawsuit.”
So guess why they found the requirements from the donation “distatful”?
“Hibbs, a 1926 graduate of Missouri, required the university to establish three separate chairs, funded at $1.1 million each, and another three distinguished professorships, with two funded at $567,000 and another at $566,000, according to the lawsuit.
The will required each appointee be a “dedicated and articulate disciple” of MU’s Ludwig von Mises Austrian School of Economics, which emphasizes free markets, private property and limited government, according to the lawsuit.”
Yeah, can’t have that shit when what you want to peddle is collectivism.
That’s awesome – MU would have to fork over the whole trust to Hillsdale if they don’t follow the terms of the gift. You know Hillsdale would be glad to hire more free-market Economists.
Look for some leftwing judge to rule that the terms of the gift are unenforceable, because reasons.
So I had my Plex server on random play of my television collection and it showed me an episode of the very short-lived That ’80s Show. I forgot that Glenn Howerton, Dennis from television’s It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, was the male protagonist. HOLY MACKEREL! That ’80s Show is a stinker.
Man, New Orleans really cannot get it right. They need to import them some Dutchies to get their dyke situation in order. In my garage I have a map of the NL from the 1950’s. Today they have a significant amount more country than they did then. I lived there for several years and in that time they added a whole new neighborhood in the east of Amsterdam by damming and dykiing the Het IJ. It was cool to bike through a whole new area that was all getting built up and stacked with apartment buildings and stores. Five years before it was under several feet of water.
Having lived in both cities, I tend to concur but with some reservations. IMO, the levees are, for the most part, well constructed for what they were intended to accomplish. There are sections under the jurisdiction of Levee Control Districts that are exemplars of Louisiana corruption/malfeasance; those sections (we found after Katrina) had been built using piled refuse rather than earthen berms. The major problem is the amount of water that is now reaching the city because the coastal mangroves that mitigate storm water have been perforated by a maze of access canals dredged out to better service the energy industry. There is also the issue of royalty payments. As I understand it, in 49 States mineral/resource royalties are split 50/50 between State and FedGov. In Louisiana however, because of a political pissing match between President Johnson and Plaquemines Parrish boss Leander Judge Perez, FedGov keeps 90% of the royalties while Louisiana gets 10%. This has resulted in billions of dollars being wasted by FedGov rather being wasted by the good people of LA.
I also must point out the pigheaded hubris of the Civil Works Section of the Corps of Engineers that I think is perfectly encapsulated by a statement from one of their reps when came to speak to our Intro to Civil Engineering – “Give us enough money and we will build a bridge to the moon.”
Interesting, thanks for the additional perspective.
My pleasure. In my experience, corruption in New Orleans is on a level that one would normally associate with some Third World kleptocracy. At every level, from tow truck drivers hooking up legally parked cars to extort a drop fee to a court system that sets very high bonds and trial dates very far out in the hopes that you return to your home state and forfeit your bond to a municipal water system that is so incompetent that residents are often under boil orders to safely consume their tap water. NOLA is forever in my heart and soul but I don’t know if I could live there again (certainly not now, with 2 young children).
My sister=in-law lives on Rokko Island which is a man made island next to Kobe. They got a “deal” on their house because no one really wanted to live on a man made island. Then the big Kobe earthquake hit and they did better than most of Kobe.
Great place to visit.
Color me surprised…
was this covered?
Workers should be in control of office air conditioning, not bosses.
https://twitter.com/jacobinmag/status/1148668139397193729
air conditioning is not a feminist issue it is a class issue
jacobin mag twitter feed is hard to beat, derp wise
Men don’t work? That’s stupid even by Jacobin standards.
The men here don’t, right Rufus?
Literal LOL. The cause really has fallen on hard times when the commies are having a snit over air conditioning. What have the Romans ever done for us!?
The actual issue is unimportant, so long as the complaining may continue unimpeded. What fun is contentment?
I have a window air conditioner in my own office. It’s gloriously cold in here.
That is the dumbest shit I think I’m going to hear this week. Air conditioning is a luxury, not a punishment.
Ask some workers in a non-conditioned office space in New Delhi how they feel about AC.
What about the actual workers on the 100 degree factory floor?
industrial electricians don’t count as real people
My startup was located in an old building that used to be a factory. The air circulation was designed for a giant open floorspace. Then they chopped it up into multiple offices and the circulation sucked because not every office had vents.
Our neighbors had the only thermostat for the floor. They set it very high because a) most of the vents were emptied into their office and they got a lot of cold air and b) the main unit was also in their space and it made “too much noise”.
After multiple attempts to reason with them, we finally paced off how far we thought the thermostat was in our shared wall with them and cut out some drywall. We found the back of the thermostat and took the wires off it and put it on a thermostat we bought. From then on we could control the temps from our thermostat.
Our neighbors put up a huge hissy fit with building management about how their thermostat didn’t work and they were being driven nuts by all the noise. Luckily building management was apathetic as hell, so all they would do is send up a guy who would jiggle the thermostat and then shrug his shoulders.
Grade A office war stuff there.
In my experience, its not unusual at all to put non-functioning thermostats into offices. Hell, I’ve got on in my office right now. Its like the close door button on elevators – it provides a pacifying placebo effect.
Yep. As I type this I’m looking at the wall opposite my desk where there is a thermostat. It does absolutely nothing.
Keep watching…
“The Pledge of Allegiance to our great Country, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, is under siege. That is why I am going to win the Great State of Minnesota in the 2020 Election. People are sick and tired of this stupidity and disloyalty to our wonderful USA!”

LOL I doubt that very much but I rate this trolling an A for Effort.
He came super close last time. If Amy “Special” K isn’t on the ticket, he might be able to put Minnesoda into play. Maybe not serious play, but enough to warrant a few visits from the Dem candidate.
A “too local” story.
The local “conservative” talk show has been railing about this for weeks. It helps to remind me why I dislike the Conservatives/GOP as much as I dislike the liberals (despite leaning more conservative personally).
If I was a calling a talk show type of person, I’d be sorely tempted to call in and rail about how un-American the Pledge of Allegiance is. No fucking real American who loves liberty should be pledging nothing to anything or anyone.
My feelings exactly.
“How Higher Education Became a Pawn in the Partisan Forever War
The quakes came in quick succession, first a 6.4 on the Richter scale, rattling nerves and door frames across Southern California, then a 7.1 just 34 hours later, knocking homes off foundations and sending families into the street. Days earlier and 3,000 miles north along the Ring of Fire, Alaska’s governor, Michael Dunleavy, had created a different kind of jolt, no less abrupt and jarring, by announcing a 41-percent cut in state funding to the Alaska public-university system.
Greater Los Angeles is still standing, as is the foundation of state financial support for college nationwide. But politics, like seismology, is an inexact science, full of hidden pressures and unexpected catastrophes. The question is whether Dunleavy’s actions are a foreshock of greater destruction to come.”

Some editors just need to be taken out and shot.
Higher Ed has been the Queen in the partisan forever war for quite a while.
Well now… the past few months I’ve been in a slump and realized I haven’t been working on any projects to keep my overactive mind busy.
So I went through my collection of books that I began but never finished and found a post-zombie apocalypse (some 200 years after the initial outbreak) piece that was only a few chapters long. I decided to take those few thousand words and converted it to a fantasy book. Now I’m up to 10 chapters and slowly slogging through.
And the Mustang mods – just loving the MPT ECU tune I got, which requires 93+ octane. Next are the rear gears.
And I finished the first monoblock of the E130L amplifiers.
and EF and I are starting a little business where I build wooden frames and we stretch vintage fabric over them, with the idea of selling ’em at an antique store.
So I have that going for me.
and to no great surprise, the “family” dog is really EF’s dog. To the dog, the rest of us are just members of the pack; not be be trusted completely.

A source of frustration when we had the AMG was how hard it was to get the good stuff. 93+ octane was simply not for sale in Tucson.

She’s the alpha. What did you expect?
But I’m the alpha!

Sure, bub.
I have a B-series APx555 on the way for me to spend a month playing with it.
Want to find out everything wrong with your monoblocks?
most likely everything – and some *particulars you hate. But I had the extra output transformers sitting around so why not? I’ll sell the amps soon enough to some “golden ear”. My gosh I’m getting cynical.
*pentode EF86 driver, pentode SE output with OD3 regulated g2, plate to cathode feedback, choke input power supply with an ahem rectifier tube and motor run caps. But no special majik parts – just the Mouser catalog and my tub of junk (do you want a few hundred .1 Wima caps?) left over from other projects.
“What’s your dirt doin’ in Boss’ ditch, Luke?”
Well, AOC does have at least one bill we could get behind. (Trigger warning: TOS)
…Too bad it died, apparently.
I hesitate to admit this, but I would say about once every couple weeks or so she says or does something I . . . don’t disagree with.
Federal funding for quack medical research? Pass.
