Do you know what’s even less fun that Arizona in August? Arizona in August without a working air conditioner. And the repair guys have now completed their eighth visit and assured us, “Oh yeah, this time we got it!” Which, coincidentally, is exactly what they said the last seven times. And of course… it stopped working again. So I’m a baked Jew, and not in the good sense, though compared to the German version of this dish, I’m more of a sous vide.
Birthdays today include a guy who made a monkey out of William Jennings Bryan; another statist piece of shit who actually was a racist; one of my absolute favorite sci-fi writers, whose work was relentlessly American; one of my absolute favorite jazz singers; a woman who is actually quite fun in person– and was railroaded by a grandstanding prosecutor (as NY prosecutors tend to be); and a guy who got killed in Vietnam but never got the news.

OK, now we know what came out of the woodshed talk last week.
Speaking of baseball, this is a great story.
Old Guy Music is something of a curiosity- we’ve all heard Hendrix’s cover, I love Popa Chubby’s cover, but somehow we don’t often hear the original. Or maybe it’s not the original.… breakups are often messy.

Not much different from Colin Kaepernick.
It took me a second to get the Anne Frank joke.
I may have laughed.
Shame, shame on you
Needs more shame
Wow, Ted. Well done.
Here’s some far, far better shame.
More shame.
The worst thing about being Anne Frank was becoming an international bestseller and never getting a penny in royalties
It seems all Jew jokes are in the same spirit…tounge in cheek from people who like Jews and everyone knows they are just poking fun.
The real anti-semitism is unmistakable and there is no shortage of it. I don’t think anyone laughs at that.
Trump tries yet again to fuck up a good thing by increasing taxes. – you Jews always hated the working class
“Saikat has decided to leave the office of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez to work with New Consensus to further develop plans for a Green New Deal,” Trent said in a statement.
“We are extraordinarily grateful for his service to advance a bold agenda and improve the lives of the people in NY-14. From his co-founding of Justice Democrats to his work on the Ocasio-Cortez campaign and in her official office, Saikat’s goal has always been to do whatever he can to help the larger progressive movement, and we look forward to continuing working with him to do that.”
He’s an idea man. He can’t be bothered with piddly crap like “constituent service”. He’s got a nation to conquer.

(Chakrabarti) particularly targeted moderate Rep. Sharice Davids, a Democrat from a formerly red Kansas district who is one of the two Native American women serving in Congress.
Chakrabarti said Davids voted in a way that helped “enable a racist system” when she voted in favor of a bill that would provide southern border relief.
The tweet was deleted but the damage was done.
The remark was widely criticized and prompted a tweet from the @HouseDemocrats account: “Who is this guy and why is he explicitly singling out a Native American woman of color?”
He must be a white supremacist!
tag fail…
It’s racist for one Indian to criticize another?
We must end dot on feather violence!
Feather totally kicks dots ass on the intersectional grievance matrix.
Maybe the Indians (feather) learned the hard way that open borders aren’t a good idea.

The ‘stache puppy is adorable. Saw a cat at a Humane Society bennie who had a Groucho ‘stache spot on his lip. Thought of him as “Groucho” thereafter. If he’s still available when Mr. GT is ready for us to adopt again, he may come home with us. (It’s either him or the stray with two teeth that my BIL is nursing back to health. The stray has the benefit of being socialized by the BIL, who did a great job on our last kitteh, and of matching our carpet better than Groucho would.)
I had a cat named Fukui-san who had a Hitler mustache. That’s when I learned about the existence of the term “Kitler.”
Why have I never heard Kitler before? This made me laugh. I’m such a dummy for not thinking of it myself. I have one.

So it is a warmish afternoon here outside its 30 degrees, inside 23 with both ACs on full blast. So wha is everyone drinking. I am having a romanian Viognier and IT IS A PERFECTLY GOOD WINE OKAY.
Worked well with some pan seared tuna. salt, pepper, ponzu, 1 minute each side on high heat. tuna is expensive in this country, had to spend 10 of your american dollars for 350 grams
There is only one spot on Earth that produces great Viognier.
great schmreat it is good enough for this afternoon
“Good enough, is good enough.”
And Boris is Badenov.
tuna is expensive in this country, had to spend 10 of your american dollars for 350 grams
Buy the canned stuff. :-p
eeewww
That is a shame. Tuna is damned cheap here.
sushi grade?
It is a little higher but not too bad.
as i said i cook my tuna like 2 minutes it is mostly raw in the middle so i like good quality, although i am aware parasites can be present in the good stuff. this one was fished in Vietnam. hopefully without slave labor
Only America ever had slaves.
/SJW npc
Vietnam. Yikes. Raw sewage running directly into the sea. Are we gonna have to get into the ‘well done’ discussion again? Cuz if we are people are gonna start throwing rotten vegetables at me.
Do you want us to cook them first?
The fish or the Vietnamese?
I meant the veg…nevermind. Well done, Suthen.
*Kicks pebble and wanders off*
Sushi grade tuna costs more than $10 for 12 oz. around here.

Speaking of which, we have another Dragons game tonight. Just got the e-mail reminding us to reserve our playoff tickets. I just laughed and laughed.
Ill still take in a Dragons game any day over driving down to GABP, even if Cincinnati is winning.

And of course… it stopped working again.
Lemme guess, control board issue?
Nazi gremlins.
They replaced the control board to no good effect.
I diagnosed it from day one (this has been going on for a week and a half now) but the repair guys don’t want to hear it.
I assume it’s something you can’t fix yourself?
Not easily. It will involve digging into walls and I suspect the landlord would not be happy about that.
I won’t bother linking or quoting, but CNN has an anguished rumination about how Boris Johnson and his ill-considered quest for Brexit will be the end of Great Britain. Oh, woe.
How could anyone doubt the magnificent wisdom of a united Europe? Who could be so foolish as to reject the benevolent stewardship of the Wise Men of Brussels?
Great Britain should burn Washington down again to prove a point. Many Americans would not mind.

I’d bring marshmallows.
They could try, but it would require marching through Baltimore, which would no human would want to do.
They already know this. They tried it once before.
It would also require a navy, and theirs can’t even handle the Iranians.
It’s all so predictable. They’ve had to ratchet up every single crisis and all of the doom to a fever pitch to cut through the noise. The world is going to be irreversibly heated by climate change in 18 months, Trump is a nazi, and brexit is the fall of the Roman empire.
Did the AC stop working completely? Or working but not strong enough? I cannot imagine spending 15 minutes without air conditioning in Arizona in August. Two weeks ago we had the temperature in the upper 90s and the police were asking criminals not to commit any crimes until it cools down.
Not working. The thermostat turns on the blower/air handler, but the compressor and its fan doesn’t start.
start/run capacitor ?
Thermostat. Where have you been?
*You are probably correct.
Nope, that was replaced as well. The real issue is that the control board turns on the blower (inside the house), but the signal to the compressor/fan (outside) isn’t reaching it. This screams “wiring fault” to me, but what the fuck do *I* know?
The repair guys have so far replaced the start and run caps, the outside blower motor, redid the wiring at the control board, and the wiring at the thermostat (which they don’t seem to understand is not the problem since the inside blower reliably turns on when the temp hits the set point).
Import Yufus to get on it.
Unfortunately, not our call since we’re mere tenants.
I get not wanting to go into the walls but couldn’t you run a temporary line from the control board the compressor/fan. It would at least tell you if you are correct and if you are it would fix the AC until you can have a pro fish a new line through the walls.
We’d either have to drill through an exterior wall or leave a door open for the wire. But yeah, that’s the kind of troubleshooting step that they should be doing.
The repair guys are very nice and are trying hard, but they just don’t seem to have the sort of logical mindset that troubleshooting and repair calls for. I’m no HVAC guy, but I understand how systems work, how to trace problems, and how to test hypotheses. They apparently don’t.
Shotgun troubleshooting.
Often ending up with more and varied trouble than when you started.
They’re playing swaptronics. Thst sucks.
Busted relay?
/IANAHVACT
Nope, relay (the outside one where the issue is) works fine when it sees the signal. The signal is just not getting to it.
Ah, OK. Ignore my post below then.
Yes, it does sound like a wiring problem.
Do you have squirrels in AZ?
We have gila monsters.
Are they merry?
My understanding (and, again, IANAHVACT) is that the primary reason the compressor won’t start is a bad relay; the low voltage wiring between your board and the outdoor unit is probably fine, but if the relay is bad, you won’t get the line voltage to start the compressor.
All I can think is that this is your HVAC guy – https://i.pinimg.com/originals/af/dd/15/afdd159dd787b1c9c386ca4691090fc6.gif

How’s things, E?
Things are good. Going through the closets right now, weeding out what will make the move to Seattle. Kind of liberating, but kind of sentimental too. I’m okay with it, but my wife has a harder time letting go. We’re just listening to tunes and packing moving boxes. I need to be drinking beer, though. Excuse me while I walk down to the liquor store.
How’s life treating you
Excellent. Just spent a fun week in Alberta with the family and now trying to see my kid before he heads back to CO.
I’m excited for you guys. Change is always stressful, but adventures are the best!

I’m drinking coffee. Black. I might have a Little Debbie cherry snack pie, in a while. They’re good for breakfast.

Coffee and dark chocolate (trader joe’s) here.
how dark? my sweet spot is between 85% and 90%

It’s 85%. Yes, they have a ton of dark chocolate goodies. Love the peanut butter /dark chocolate cups.
In the Lands of the Nether people they have no AC and apparently it is almost impossible to get government approval to install one. When there was a heat wave there my friend told me they had 34 degrees in the bedroom. I would not sleep a minute in that heat. I have trouble sleeping if it is above 24, let alone 34
Allow me to translate – 24C is about 75F and 34C is north of 93F
Thank you. I find celcius wholy inadequate at describing temperatures for the day to day life.
amazingly, I find the same thing of fahrenheit
Kelvin or GTFO
Speaking of.
What I can’t grasp is that despite having AC many of my Japanese friends don’t use it.
I realize electricity rates in Japan are quite high compared to the US, but once things get into the 30s I’d be paying the price.
OTH, at least they don’t believe that leaving a fan on causes death…
Lower body fat, smaller bodies, and conditioning for warm temperatures.
For the second week in a row, my japanese teacher was wearing a sweater. Outside temp was in the upper 80’s.
“…impossible to get government approval to install one (air conditioning)”
Yet ask nearly any one of the fuckwits and they will swear they live in a free country.
freedom means doing what is best for the collective
You are not truly free unless you need your community’s permission to install an appliance.
Government approval, normally something I loathe, may have a financially-protective effect in this case — electricity rates in The Netherlands are almost ten times higher per kilowatt-hour than here in Edmonton, due to all their “green” crap. The Man may unwittingly be doing the average Netherlander a favour.
i would rather pat for the 10 days of heat a year than not sleep
Antonio Brown is not going to practice until Hard Knocks is over. He also has massive blisters on his feet and was still destroying DBs and catching TDs.

Letters to the Local Rag: Well, Baltimore Is On the 39th Parallel, Close Enough For Me
Too bad you can only move the Colts from there once.
You can always move the Ravens from there.
The only thing keeping that city from taking Detroit’s title is Johns Hopkins.
As someone who lives in the county and works all over the city, I can say with out a shadow of a doubt the safest part of town is any Johns Hopkins campus, be it hospital or school. And the one baltimore rep who championed the hopkins police force’s somewhat questionable tactics of keeping their workers and students safe was none other than Elijah Cummings. He even went to the state house to promote their good deeds and expansion. Hopkins also does a good job of getting rid of vacant housing near their campuses. Thats pissing off a lot of council members off for some reason.
And I want to make clear when I say live in the county, I’m less than a mile north of the county line. City zipcode, but pay county taxes. Anyone who lives the city is either paying taxes at a subsidized rate or is Rich. There’s very few middle income areas, if any. Baltimore’s middle class Exodus due to high taxes should be a shining example for other american cities of what not to do, but that’s just not going to happen. There’s votes to be bought, dammit.
Andre Drummond was in my local courthouse yesterday. Small world.

I have a cat I named Hitler but my wife made me stop calling her that. Now we just call her Front Porch Cat.
Everyone has a right to express themselves but they don’t have a right to use someone else’s venue. It’s a damned ball game. No one cares about someone else’s political opinion. Throw them out on their ass…and the kneeling players with them.
96MPH? Impressive.
Porch … how quaint
On the AOC front…. the Green New Deal stuff got her named one of the year’s Great Thinkers. I heard someone vamping about this on the radio last night. I would provide a link, but there are so many articles with the phrase “not a great thinker” that whatever this new one is didn’t rise to the top, and I’m too lazy to waste more than 30 seconds on this topic.
On the bright side, the Green New Deal provided so many people with the opportunity to delegitimize themselves by offering their agreement. It’s a nice litmus test for morons,
I used to think Margaret Mead and her merry band of Malthusian Morons were behind the global crisis climate warming bullshit but now I see the truth. Douglas Adams is the guilty party.
Seriously.
But on the other hand, the numbers were so ridiculous that it has somehow given cover to what the main candidates are proposing. Stossel had Harris’ new spending at $4.8 trillion. Per year. That would put us over 9 trillion almost immediately, and well over 10 trillion within a year or two. And that’s only if the cost estimates are accurate. And when have they ever been accurate?
For context, the US has the world’s largest economy at $19 trillion per year. China is the only other economy even close to double digit trillions.
And so far nobody seems to have a problem with spending half (or more!) of GDP on government programs. Or, absent an absolutely impossible suite of tax increases that moves the take from 18% of GDP to 44% of GDP, an explanation as to what happens when the government attempts to borrow an additional 4.8 trillion dollars in a bond market that currently only supports around a trillion dollars.
Forget interest rate spikes attempting to attract investors to those bonds… are there even 6 trillion dollars available to invest anywhere in the world? Other than China, there are no economies of that size, let alone with surpluses of that size.
The elephant in the room is the end of the thirty year bond bull market.
Borrowing is not going to be getting easier for anyone over the next decade.
If the US government is sucking up a significant percentage of the entire bond market – each year – then I’d say so.
Currently the entire bond market (total outstanding debt) is about $100 trillion. US debt is currently $22 trillion, so nearly 1/4 of the entire bond market.
Stack an extra 6 trillion per year on that.
Now, how quickly does that completely distort the market?
(or more to the point, how much does 5 trillion in “quantitative easing” every year impact the currency markets)
Pfffft… everybody knows you just need to print more money.
**rolls eyes **
You don’t even need to do that. Herself told me “you just pay for it”. Sounds like every kid who’s parents have a credit card.
(no, that isn’t a joke. My 9 year old daughter had that exact discussion with me about buying a new car)
Letters To The Local Rag: I’ve Got Some Bad News For You About Jamestown
WTF are they talking about?
I’m just talkin’ ’bout Mitchell….
Joe Don Baker IS Mittens! He’s a cop!
I knew there were a few
old nerdscool people hanging out around here.Didn’t you know? Jamestown was a model collective where everyone got along and all races were equal.
Arizona in August without a working air conditioner? Wow. ?
You shoulda come with to Madison, OMWC!
I love Madison, lived there for a year in the 1980s. Have you tried that Laotian restaurant I told you about?
Also Pizza Brutta, fantastic place with the Real Deal. Wood-burning oven, excellent ingredients, ignore the hipsters.
So pizza that’s drier than pizza secca?
Ugly pizza?
I hope they didn’t do Brutta….figura.
Ok. I’ll stop.
worst thing is it probably is to hot to drink. Or do anything beside lie about with a big sombrero on your head
I have no concept for your expression “too hot to drink”. I know of no temperature when it is wrong to drink. A cold beer on a hot day is exquisite. A shot of spirits is great when it’s cold.
Or you can do it Wisconsin style and have a “beer and a bump”. Works in any weather, at any time. Seems to be traditional for trips to town for grocery shopping. Have a beer and a bump at the bar next to the supermarket, then stop about halfway home for another…
I like that the author of the article about the Trump banner at the Orioles game decided to provide context by calling Trump a racist.
I mean, sure, you might want to provide context for a political banner going up. But interesting that the only context the author chose is that people are calling him a racist.
Not that under his administration unemployment has dropped to record lows. Not that he has eliminated 12 regulations for every new regulation promulgated during his administration. Not that he championed a new criminal justice reform bill that helped minorities who were disproportionately affected by the Clinton era laws….
No… the only context that matters is that Trump is a racist. Because he said the same things Obama, the Mayor of Baltimore and even Rep. Cummings himself said about Baltimore.
That’s what ya call objective reporting, folks!
(in fairness, put in the context of the last 12 years, that actually is pretty straight and objective reporting.)
It’s obligatory now.
You can’t be a real journalist unless you use the required descriptors.
“You can’t be a real journalist unless you use the required descriptors.”, he asserted without evidence.
FTFY.
“Some people think he’s racist.” Yeah, that’s about 100% more even-handed than every other MSM outlet.
“Scientific” “American” is concerned
In March, the Food and Drug Administration approved esketamine, a drug that produces psychedelic effects, to treat depression—the first psychedelic ever to clear that bar. Meanwhile the FDA has granted “breakthrough therapy” status—a designation that enables fast-tracked research—to study MDMA (also called “ecstasy”) as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and psilocybin as a treatment for major depression.
While these and other psychedelic drugs show promise as treatments for specific illnesses, FDA approval means doctors could also prescribe them for other, “off-label” purposes—including enhancing the quality of life of people who do not suffer from any disorder.
——
Yet while the FDA generally does not regulate physicians’ prescribing practices, a federal law called the Controlled Substances Act bars them from writing prescriptions without a “legitimate medical purpose.” Although this prohibition aims to prevent doctors from acting as drug traffickers, the law does not explain which purposes qualify as “legitimate,” nor how to distinguish valid prescriptions from those that merely enable patients’ illicit drug abuse.
Would prescribing a psychedelic drug simply to promote empathy or increase “life satisfaction” fall within the scope of legitimate medicine—or would these practices render the physician a drug dealer?
What about the law? Won’t somebody think of the poor DEA agents?
I’m thinking of them.
I’m thinking they can all die of massive heart attacks immediately if not sooner. No woodchippers required, Preet.
Yeah, they already have this covered. All they have to do is start a moral panic and pretty soon any doctor prescribing it will be sitting in jail, and people who actually need it will have a really tough time getting their hands on it.
(says the guy who has experienced several episodes of “suck it up for a couple of days” when some narcotic painkillers would have been really helpful)

Progress!
Well, it’s about time. Can’t let those mouth breathers keep the title.
“Chakrabarti will head to New Consensus, a nonprofit climate change group that helps promote the Green New Deal.”
New consensus. These people and their weasel phrases. Why not neo-consensus?
Retards.
“Chakrabarti helped spark the rift between Ocasio-Cortez and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others when he likened moderate Democrats to “new southern Democrats” in a tweet — in effect calling them racists.
He particularly targeted moderate Rep. Sharice Davids, a Democrat from a formerly red Kansas district who is one of the two Native American women serving in Congress.”
He’s a peach. He exudes misplace pompous arrogance this one. Unity while sowing seeds of discord!
““Yo @RichValdes what in the actual f–k makes you think you’re entitled to a debate with AOC,” Trent tweeted. “Pro tip: stalking her at a parade ain’t gonna make it any more likely to happen.””
Pro tip. If you want to be taken seriously, don’t use ‘yo’.
In a nutshell, these guys are professional agitators and grifters.
Retards not really they will make a good living peddling bullshit. sometimes i wish i could think of a get rich scam
It’s actually very easy to do that. What stops you is integrity.
“I can just tell you that at practice, when he catches a quick slant and gets vertical and goes, it’s rare to see grown men in the NFL start looking at each other and start giggling and laughing. And it happens almost every day in practice,” Mayock said, per the Indiana Gazette. “I think what it also does is the young guys get to see what an All-Pro potential Hall of Famer actually practices on a daily basis. If you’re a young guy and you look at that, you’d better understand what it takes.”
But then he acts like a complete immature clown.
So. It evens out!
“Orioles team owner Peter Angelos is a prominent trial attorney and Democratic donor. In 2016, he gave more than $270,000 to a Super PAC to encourage former Vice President Joe Biden to make a White House bid, according to Business Insider.”
Now I have an actual reason to hope the Orioles get to 100 losses.
If you give to Hillary, I question your intelligence and morals. Simple as that.
Angelos has long been hated in Baltimore. He’s been a terrible owner, pretty much destroyed a franchise that for decades was an example of the Right Way to run a team.
Not hated as much as Irsay, but fans have been pleading for years for him to sell the team to someone who actually might bring back The Oriole Way.
Everyone thought Angelos was going to be such a great owner because he was “local”. Jacobs Didn’t really care about the team, but he didn’t meddle, either. He knew his place. I’ve been waiting for Angelos to die for quite a while. With the recent hirings his sons have made, it’s giving me some hope that they’re not their father.
Titillating journalism
It’s also essential to highlight how imperfect these technologies still are. Voice assistants aren’t supposed to record users without the user intentionally initiating recording through a wake word. However, anyone who’s used a voice assistant knows that it’s not uncommon for the computer to screw up and think it should be listening. This is how Siri accidentally recorded a couple having sex. The human review process is actually supposed to improve these technologies so that they screw up less. However, Apple, Google, and Amazon kept secret the possibility that a human could listen to users’ recordings until whistleblowers spoke out about the practice earlier this year. All of these companies say that only a very small number of recordings are reviewed by humans, but even the slightest chance that some random stranger will hear you having sex is unnerving, to say the least.
——-
Trading a little bit of privacy for a better product is an old but increasingly tough proposition. If you want to ask Alexa about the weather, Alexa needs to understand what you’re saying, and it needs to know where you are. You, the user, are also well within your rights to demand that Alexa only listen to you when you wake up the computer. It’s appalling that some voice assistants recording people having sex and then random humans listen to those recordings. Yet, here we are.
Yeah, that’s the real problem.
As I see it the real problem they have uncovered is that they are not collecting enough information. Sure, we know the location where the couple is having sex, but we really need the age and gender-sex of the participants, as well as some objective measure of hotness. Given all of that information and Alexa’s access to home security and device video….
Well, you get the picture…
Should be easy enough; just cross reference with online shopping history (size of clothes including bra and panties), menstrual products and OTC supplements should give a reasonable approximation of age and data from the smart fridge will give an idea of how health conscious the participants generally are. While a man likely wouldn’t buy condoms online, credit card records would easily reveal if he was purchasing Magnums (for the bratwurst-preferring Glibs).
Sounds like we have the pitch for an interesting e-commerce startup.

I had an organic prof that was always trying to beat it in our heads that the devil is in the details. Don’t try to get an overarching understanding. Study the details.
I disagree. There are times when stepping back and getting a wider perspective can be very helpful in seeing patterns. Then you go back to the details and see if A) your pattern is accurate, or B) if the pattern holds.
This was a very entertaining and informative way for me to spend half of an hour. I found it worth the time spent. There aren’t any great revelations but there is a very definite pattern that emerges. It is Saturday and y’all don’t work anyway. I would be very interested to see what y’all take away from it.

I agree about getting the story first and then filling in the details. That’s why I found biology and physics so much easier than chemistry. In biology you start with “bunny rabbit” and then get body parts, organs, cells, cell parts, molecular biology, biosynthetic pathways, etc. Start big, fill in details. Makes it really easy.
We started chemistry with “here’s the elements”…. Ok, so far so good… then we went to rate laws. WTF? How did we get from hydrogen and carbon and SP2 orbitals to some weird nomenclature and fractions?
It may not have helped that I had inorganic taught by some German dude a huge auditorium with 900 other freshmen.
I found organic to be much, much simpler – because it was in a smaller setting and it was taught based on “here’s how the orbitals are configured, so here’s how the reactions occur”. SN1, SN2… ok, that makes sense.
Careful. Don’t mention orbitals around here.

Salt, a little pepper, maybe some garlic. If it’s a steak you got on sale, then break out the Tony Chachere or the Montreal Steak Seasoning, maybe, but only then.
Bad Orange Man is devious
President Donald Trump is looking to woo black voters — if he can make them forget about his tweets.
The Trump 2020 campaign has been quietly reaching out to prominent African Americans about joining its latest coalition, intended to boost Republican support in the black community. The effort comes just as the president capped off a month filled with racially divisive language and Twitter taunts aimed at House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings and four freshman congresswomen of color.
——
The campaign’s pitch to African Americans is simple: Ignore the president’s words and instead focus on his policies, like the state of the economy and the low unemployment rate, the passage of criminal justice reform or the creation of Opportunity Zones, which are meant to bolster investment in underserved or poorer cities.
——-
“Do I think some of his verbal formulations are in artful? Yeah,” said Ken Blackwell, the former mayor of Cincinnati, former Ohio Secretary of State and a top Trump transition official. “But for me, as a domestic policy adviser during the Trump transition, it has been all about the agenda, a set of results and tomorrow. You have to believe his policy agenda flies in the face of the false narrative of the racist-in-charge.”
That bastard. How dare he? The Democrats own the black voter.
Still trying to figured out how most of the Orange Man’s tweets are racist. Rude or insulting – sure I’ll buy that, but my racist detector must be broken.
If it’s not obvious to you, then you are also a racist.
Well as a white person I’m not sure I’m actually allowed to learn and speak Japanese.
“as a white person”
No need to go any further, your racism is confirmed.
It depends; Asians are also white when the outrage of the moment demands it.
Well, de Blasio certainly feels that way. It’s making NYC large Chinese community rethink their loyalty to Team Blue. Problem is they come from a nanny state culture so the cognitive dissonance is really interesting.
You have to get your head right comrade. First. you construct a narrative then you hammer everything into a shape that fits it.
Maybe blacks living in places like Baltimore look around and think, “You know, he’s right”.
News that Glibs specifically can use.

Well, OMWC – it took 5 service calls to fix our leaking dishwasher. As I’ve fixed many of our appliances I spent $40 and an 4 hours of a precious day off diagnosing the issue and trying a new door seal. After that failure we called the service company.
They ripped the thing apart changed lots of unnecessary parts and replaced the same seal that I did and it still leaked. Fortunately they didn’t charge me for the unnecessary parts. They finally figured out it was the lower spray arm that was just leaking enough to shoot water where it wasn’t supposed to and leaking out the door.
That said I’ll take AC over hand washing dishes for a month any day of the week!
More:
The Trump campaign was criticized during the 2016 campaign for vying for the black vote but never taking the time to visit black churches, black colleges or African American groups. The purpose of coalitions like the African American one is to do a better job of outreach to specific communities.
Wait- the Trump campaign didn’t bother “reaching out” to DNC front groups? My god, the man is shameless.
You can only get to heaven through the church.

My reaction to most of the article is like “no shit”, but I’ll give the author a good deal of credit for trying to break out the bubble.
“When I lived in Los Angeles, driving the 33 miles from Hollywood to Venice might as well have been driving to another state.”
If your route from Hollywood to Venice is 33 miles, you’re doing it wrong. Or you fabricated the story.
He sounds like a decent guy and not insufferable which made for easy reading but still….how can you not know that’s how life is in those places?
I grew up in the suburbs and it’s sort of like that and now I find myself wanting to go even smaller. I was stunned to hear a couple of my buddies say they want to leave the suburbs and head to the city to live! They want to live in a condo where the ‘action’ is and where there’s ‘life’. Not me
As for people helping others. Last night after leaving a restaurant after midnight I notice a guy with the hood of his Hummer open standing with the cables connected but no car on the other end. So I just drove up to him and asked if he needed a boost (I carry a NOCO battery in my car), he was genuinely happy someone stopped to ask but he told us he woke his father up and was on his way but thanked us while giving us a prayer salute.
‘while giving the prayer’
One too many ‘us’ in the sentence.
I know we have grammar Nazis around here.
My first thought was that the guy needs to learn to cook. Stop complaining about not being able to get restaurant food.
Oh, and the jelly bean counting regarding “diversity”.
From the article:
“The gun owners I met take the responsibility of owning a gun very seriously and approve of formal education and certification for operating weapons.”
First part: duh
Second part: WTF
The poor dear.
It’ll be interesting how The Idiot from the Bronx acts moving forward. It’s been theorized she was just a puppet for that guy who quit.
Yes. She has been brought into the tent.
How many years until she banks her first million ?
Descendants III premiered last night. 8 year old daughter, and consequently the rest of the house, are on viewing 3. It’s a cute franchise but this chapter is bittersweet due to the very recent death of one of the young principal actors (Cameron Boyce). Eagle-eyed viewers should notice both Sarah Jeffery (Maggie Vera on television’s Charmed) and Dylan Playfair (Reilly on television’s Letterkenny).
Yeah, with 2 daughters in the house, we actually had a watch party last night. Dead dude was a sorta bit player in the Disney world who was kind of everywhere. I always noticed him in the group numbers because he was by far the best dancer of the crew – which is saying something in a Disney cast filled with singer-dancer kids. He was apparently one of the nicest and most generous people you’d ever want to meet. Spent a ton of time and effort on his charity. Why do the early deaths seem to target the decent ones and skip over the douchebags?
As to the movie? Phew.. they really phoned this one in. Terrible writing, bad cinematography and cheap effects. They must have blown their entire budget on retaining the cast.
And what to my eyes was a thinly veiled commentary on immigration that was ill-thought-out and pretty facile. The conclusion to the film was “just let all the bad guys out of our magical exile prison”. Because some of the kids of the bad guys were nice. Or something.
I dunno. The writing was super-lazy, The conflict was sitcom-level fake and the conclusion was weak and really forced, so it coulda just been that. But I’m sure that anyone who spends their days on a political blog might see the parallels to immigration arguments in the US.
Reason has an interesting article about nanny-state from the right:
https://reason.com/2019/08/02/the-city-wants-to-force-this-familys-eviction-from-their-home-because-their-guest-committed-a-crime-they-didnt-know-about-somewhere-else/
Synopsis:
Couple has a rent-to-own lease agreement with a private individual. Their teenage son has a friend who is homeless. Nice couple lets him crash at their house periodically. Homeless kid breaks into a restaurant in town. Couple turns kid in when they find him hiding in the basement. Under a “crime free housing” ordinance, the city demands that landlord evict them and terminate their agreement – forfeiting their investment. Neither landlord nor tenants are happy with this development. IJ is on the case.
Meh. Too local.
Oooh. Inside joke!
I am thinking this shit wont fly. Punishing one for the crime of another? If you can punish them because the offender lives in the same house, why not the same block? Same town? How close a relationship do you need to have? Immediate family? Friends? Co-workers? Randomly pick someone?
This is a practice in China and has been for a long time. I am sure Thomas Friedman would shoot off in his pants over this one. The court system….not so much.
Heck, at least they didn’t use asset forfeiture to take the guy’s house…
Yet.
Turn in a criminal, lose your home. Nice incentives there, geniuses.
He was probably doing criminal stuff the whole time he stayed there!

Surprise!
Attempts to solve the climate crisis by cutting carbon emissions from only cars, factories and power plants are doomed to failure, scientists will warn this week.
A leaked draft of a report on climate change and land use, which is now being debated in Geneva by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), states that it will be impossible to keep global temperatures at safe levels unless there is also a transformation in the way the world produces food and manages land.
——
The new IPCC report emphasises that land will have to be managed more sustainably so that it releases much less carbon than at present. Peat lands will need to be restored by halting drainage schemes; meat consumption will have to be cut to reduce methane production; while food waste will have to be reduced.
Among the measures put forward by the report is the proposal of a major shift towards vegetarian and vegan diets. “The consumption of healthy and sustainable diets, such as those based on coarse grains, pulses and vegetables, and nuts and seeds … presents major opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” the report states.
There also needs to be a big change in how land is used, it adds. Policies need to include “improved access to markets, empowering women farmers, expanding access to agricultural services and strengthening land tenure security”, it states. “Early warning systems for weather, crop yields, and seasonal climate events are also critical.”
It’s for your own good.
We don’t want to impose a worldwide socialist dictatorship, but it’s the only way to save the planet.
Clean your plate! There are
children starving in Africapolar bears dying in the Arctic!“based on coarse grains, pulses and vegetables, ”
What is “pulses” and how do I prepare it?
Dal. And easy-peasy.
What is dal ?
My Google is broke.
Beans and peas.
Popular pulses include all varieties of dried beans, such as kidney beans, lima beans, butter beans and broad beans. Chick peas, cowpeas, black-eyed peas and pigeon peas are also pulses, as are all varieties of lentils.
Ok, thanks for something completely new.
I really don’t think I have ever heard that term before, which is really surprising.
And a Dal is a pulse split in half. Also something I didn’t know.
We
don’twant to impose a worldwide socialist dictatorship, and this global warming scheme is the best way we’ve figured out to make that happen.but it’s the only way to save the planet.FTFY
“…it will be impossible to keep global temperatures…”
No shit.
We have sinned. The gods are angry. Doom approaches. Sacrifices must be made to appease the Gods. Don’t worry, I will look after the sacrifices on behalf of the Gods.
Oldest fucking scam in the world. Everyone in on it needs to be punched in the throat and sent packing.
Seriously…y’all take a look at the video I linked to above.
empowering women farmers
Why not empower trans farmers and farmers of color too, bigot?!
Well, they’re not wrong. That is exactly what it would require.
But he is wrong when he says they don’t want to do it.
True.
This is not all that surprising to me.

After all, we evolved living meal-to-meal and fasting pretty regularly. Eating around the clock is essentially a consequence of the rise of agriculture.
Yeah, unlike most dietary fads, this one actually has some decent logic behind it.
You know, I tried the intermittent fasting thing and it didn’t really do anything for me. It was a little more convenient in that it matched how I tend to eat normally, more or less. What screwed the pooch for me was that I had to either wait until way late at night to exercise, or I’d do it on an empty stomach and absolutely suck. I don’t mean like just get uncomfortably hungry, I mean like on running days I was gassed right out of the gate and had shitty times, and on lifting days I wouldn’t be able to finish some sets, like that feeling you get when you’re trying to lift a weight and there’s just no muscle left. Just totally fatigued.
There’s no reason you have to wait if you need food right away. Just finish eating early in the day.
I love being able to go 12-16b hours, especially when I’m traveling and there aren’t decent food options. I pretty much eat when I’m hungry and often only eat two larger meals a day.
Experiment.
Not being able to nail down the right schedule is what did it for me, but that’s the same challenge I have with maintaining an exercise routine.
They’re playing swaptronics. Thst sucks.
Same with cars. Just keep swapping out parts until either the problem or the customer goes away.

You get to a certain age and “younger than me and in shape” becomes “would”. Then another bump in age and that becomes “sorta in shape or young = would”. Then the final bump is “is it female?”
Yeah, what is that saying? Quantity is its own quality? For sure, youth is its own beauty once you hit, oh, 40 or so.
This really hit me at work the other day. I was thinking about how we have hired a string of quite attractive young women lately. Then I thought a little more about the chances of that happening. Tried to see them how 27 year old me would and realized that; while every one of them was above average, 27 year old me probably would’ve thought, “she’s OK”. 47 year old me unconsciously sees them as more attractive, just because they are young.
Purely hypothetical, if she wins does that mean social media has to unban her?
“EXCLUSIVE: Where HAS all the money gone? The truth is Baltimore can’t account for millions while poverty is rampant and drugs, danger and yes, rats lurk around every corner of the 7th District, a DailyMail.com investigation reveals”
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7315563/Baltimore-account-millions-drugs-danger-yes-rats-lurk-corner.html
Shocking.
Who knew the Daily Mail was a Nazi publication.
ehm acktchually during the 30s it was
So basically giving federal aid to Baltimore is like giving foreign aid to some third world dictatorship as far as how much money actually goes to help the inhabitants.
I suppose it’s telling that their “leaders” are grafting millions but let’s be honest here. Those millions were never going to “fix” the city.
Transgender agitprop, “celebration” of all body types (read: morbidly obese naked people) and soy lattes are exactly what this magazine needs!

Roll Left and die or get woke and go broke; pick your poison.
I don’t care what they publish… we have the internet now. They can’t touch the variety and reach of “the internet”. They are doomed.
PLayboy is still around? No shit. After Hefner died I thought his daughter took it over, got woke and the whole thing died. I guess it will just hasn’t yet.
A Playboy spokeswoman said the Hefner family no longer had a financial stake in the company.
Smart move.
“White folks: you know that your best Indian or Latinx or Black friend knows you’re racist. They don’t tell you but they tell each other – and everyone else. Know how you tell your boss they are awesome to their face but over beers w friends you tell the truth? Same same.”

So basically all the non-whites I know hate me because of my race? Isn’t there a term for that? Didn’t Chris rock make a joke about this 20 years ago? Something about old black men being racist as fuck about white people behind their back.
Yeah, Chris Rock is from an era when comedians could be honest and would use humor to make statements about society.
We don’t tolerate that crap any more.
+1 cracka-ass cracka
What a sad, sorry person. In the small hours of the night it must be a lonely, terrifying place in her head.
They always paint that as a one-way street. Morons. The largest number of straight-up racists I have met were black.
It’s okay. We know they’re racist, too — but we’re friends with them all the same. ;-)

Well, that’s one way to get money. Oh, “blown past”. Never mind.
If it wasn’t for the toxic mailing lists donating to a politician gets you on, I’d throw a few bucks her way just to keep her in the debates.
Her problem is with the polls. She needed 120,000 donors. Check.
But she also needs above 2% in 4 different approved polls. And as Yang recently demonstrated, the DNC establishment is willing to play games with which polls count.
I found this tidbit to be explanatory as to why the mainstream media was so obviously downplaying her performance in both the first debate and the second debate. For multiple reasons, they want to keep the number of candidates in the next debate low. I think they are at 7 right night now.
Tulsi would be pretty formidable in a solo battle against the old geezers. And the pro-war establisment doesn’t want any part of that. Hundreds of billions are spent on replenishing stocks of weapons, supply contracts, etc that are directly tied to these wars. No way they’ll let that be jeopardized. Heck, if SLS is enough to keep a suite of senators on board at only a billion or two per year, how much support does a hundred billion per year buy?
If I wasn’t Canadian, I’d do the same. Oh wait, soliciting and acquiring foreign donors never stopped Obama, did it?
“And from what I’ve seen, Gabbard’s support largely comes from GOP, Russia and tech Bros”
https://twitter.com/selectedwisdom/status/1157061796378882048
They actually did play the race card immediately. The first take I saw after the debate was that attacking Harris for her record as a prosecutor played on racist stereotypes.
Which stereotypes? Did they happen to mention?
Stereotypes. You know, racist ones. Quit being so racist.
“And from what I’ve seen, Gabbard’s support largely comes from GOP, Russia and tech Bros”
and underwire bras.
Is she only blowing “past” donors? ‘Cause I will send her money.
I cant believe none of you picked up on my obscure Douglas Adams reference.

Following the Democratic debate on Tuesday night, Trump (again) attacked CNN host Don Lemon on Twitter as “the dumbest man on television, [who] insinuated last night while asking a debate ‘question’ that I was a racist, when in fact I am ‘the least racist person in the world.’ Perhaps someone should explain to Don that he is supposed to be neutral, unbiased & fair or is he too dumb (stupid} to understand that.”
Don Lemon is not dumb. But he is black, and Donald Trump believes that black people are less intelligent than white people.
Widespread condemnation of Trump’s racist and authoritarian behavior and beliefs is essential if America is to remain a democracy in the near present and future. But Trump’s racist attacks on the “Squad,” as well as on Cummings, Sharpton and Lemon, must also be understood not in isolation but instead as part of a much larger authoritarian project.
That question was retarded. Nobody but a retard would ask it.
Trump has devoted his entire life to creating a fascist dictatorship in America, with himself as absolute ruler. Truly, he is the smartest man ever to have lived.
Wait, I thought the latest was that Trump likes hamburgers and hamburgers are Russian? I get so confused.
He likes Coke right? Red can. Commies love red things. Pepsi is red, white and blue patriotic colors. Oh, wait, so is Russian flag. I can’t keep the conspiracy theories right.
Sure, Jan.

Shocking body cam footage shows Texas cop accidentally shooting dead a homeless woman, 30, while firing at her barking dog
No.
No prayers for that fuckhead.
I’ve said it before. 12 yo Tundra learned how to deal with dogs as a goddamn paper boy. These heroz make me sick.
They say “we were only trying to murder the dog, not a person” like it would have been perfectly ok to use deadly force to stop a dog from barking.
WTH, people?!??
I’m praying for that officer. Praying for a long, extended, and painful death.
Paramedics then rushed Brooks to City Medical Arlington, where she died from her injuries around 6pm, reported Arlington Voice. The woman’s cause of death has not yet been released.
‘Preliminary information leads investigators to believe the woman was struck by gunfire from the officer,’ the police statement said.
Nice detective work there, Lou.
Look, the sound of the gunfire may have caused her to have a heart attack or she may have died of natural causes moments before she was shot.
These things take time to determine. Procedures need to be followed so that it can be determined that while the incident is regrettable, procedures were followed.
‘And I ask for prayers, not only for the family but for the officer that was involved in this call.’
That poor man. How could that stupid bitch do such a horrible thing to him?
Quentin Tarantino’s movies are about the power of stories to mold reality. Especially in unexpected ways.
I pretty much agree.
then again he said he includes violence because he likes it and it is entertaining
Also i never knew is this Crusty Juggler the same as the Crusty Juggler on the Old Site or a different Crusty Juggler? I this known or not?
Different. It would be impossible to actually be the old Crusty Juggler, as he is currently on the run and was last seen selling drugs in Hyannisport.
Juggly Cruster?
Dude is a student of campy exploitation films. I used to see him at an after hours coffeehouse in Hollywood. 1-2 in the morning and he’d be reading old scripts. Everyone else is playing pool and socializing, but he’s studying. This was early nineties. So, yeah, he likes to pay tribute to old stuff. Duh.

No accounting for taste.
No wonder I’ve never heard of him, and who is Justice Beaver?
Tiny, handsome fella with a sweet dong married to a Baldwin.
Yeah, last year I was test driving a trash truck in downtown around 11 p.m. and I got stuck in some event traffic. Huge crowd gathering for a “concert.” I was wondering who’s playing in a parking lot in downtown. I finally get to the stage area and, because I was up high in a trash truck, I can see over the fence. There’s a guy with Bart Simpson hair, spinning and scratching records and bobbing his head. He’s pointing to the sky and bouncing his finger in time to the electronic music beat. And that’s it. No instruments, no singer, no nothing. This drew a massive crowd to downtown L.A. late on a Friday night. I felt really old as I thought, “damn kids and their wacky music nowadays.”
Yeah, those DJ’s make huge bank. I was reading about some of them getting $250k per night in Vegas.
Jeez, dude… that is a lot of cash for making a playlist.
I’m not going to say that electronic music is somehow not real music… But I just can’t get into music that contains no actual instruments.
Who?
A crime fighting beaver, evidently.

Metallica song saves woman and her dog from mountain lion attack
Since the video I linked earlier is too long I will give it to. you in a nutshell.
Over the last million years humans, from Heidelbergensis to ourselves have migrated into Britain. Successive waves of glaciation have driven them out over and over. After each period of glaciation they migrated back in. The video discusses the glaciation but what they don’t say is after each stage of glaciation there is a warming period, some of which were warm enough to support critters we normally associate with the tropics. Elephants, hippos, lions etc. There is a pretty clear pattern of cooling/warming and what we are experiencing today is perfectly consistent with that long term pattern as well as the short term ones we have experienced within recorded history, all of which took place prior to the use of fossil fuels.
Even in historical memory, there were African lions throughout the Middle East and even into India.
Grapes used to grow bountifully in England, and there used to be a helluva lot of rain in the Sahara.
Climate changes. Humans adapt to it; we are to puny to try to stop that, and too clueless to know what’s best for the planet anyway

’He’s done nothing wrong’ — Police union chief blasts recommendation to fire officer over the chokehold death of Eric Garner
Wait for it…
Can it get worse? Oh, it can.
Fine. Fire Lynch too.
“A police officer has no other choice but to enforce that law,” Lynch said.
I guess that means they will be vigorously lobbying against the criminalization-of-everything currently so popular with legislators all over the country.
