Things seem to be somewhat in order – as far as posts go. We can use more material (hint, hint). It is good to have SNP back, and you may have noticed that Ozymandias has given us a chance to run some late night material. So, let us see what is coming up this week.
Monday – Animal gives us some advice on country livin’ shootin’ irons. Straffinrun…well, just read it. You will see.
Tuesday – Tejicano will speak to us of Japanese swords. Ozymandias will continue his recounting of the Great Anthrax trial.
Wednesday – Hide. Run. But it won’t save you from the Hat and the Hair. Trshmnstr continues with part 2 of his tale of horror.
Thursday – Will the Secret Nazi President be more Nazi and even more secret? Yusef fills us in on life on the road.
Friday – Pie has a question for Scotland. Cryptid time, later on.
Weekends continue with OMWC, Mexican Sharpshooter, Spudalicious and Not Adhan.
Weekdays see linkings by me, OMWC, Banjos, Brett, Mex and a cast of…several. Some. Few? Whatever.
Enjoy the open comments.
Speaking of which, I just bought this.
Gorgeous! How old is it?
Serial number 934657 (1942)
Spring chicken.
Thanks. Need to read better.
Will you be using it, Animal?
I was curious also, 😉
Oh hell yeah. Taking it out to a Saturday morning trap shoot next time we’re home.
Guns were made to be shot, and Winchester’s great Black Diamond trap guns were made for the trap range. Who am I to argue with that?
Cool. I have a Model 50 autoloader that hasn’t been shot in a long time. Do you guys recommend taking it to a gunsmith to have it checked out?
Nope. It’s broken.
Send it to me for safe disposal.
Sure! Just email me your address and bank info and I’ll charge the shipping to you.
Sound good?
My best day at trap was Dec 1971-El Paso. 45 straight, missed 46, finished off the last 4. Damn it. I didn’t shoot much trap after that, I always like skeet better but haven’t did that for a long time either. I’m actually curious how much my reflexes have changed.
Beautiful gun, Animal, you’re gonna be a happy young man.
Very nice.
I’m thinking of buying myself this so I can practice at the range solo.
I have a regular ground mount trap like that, except without the foot pedal. I got mine around 1979 or so for five bucks, because the spring was missing. I went out to Denny’s Auto Salvage and got the hood spring off of a ’65 Ford. Boy howdy does that thing fling the birds.
I have a couple of friends with battery powered launchers with foot pedals. We’ll go out to BLM land and set up on a canyon and blast away.
Bought it.
That looks beautiful!
Noice.
amazing
and amazing price
I’ve fantasized about owning a 97 since I was twelve.
A 97 Black Diamond trap gun is next on my list of must-haves.
I respect that but my favorites are always banged up; my ideal 97 would be trench-worthy.
I’ve got a Martin HD28 that is near mint: I’m nearly nauseous with anxiety every time I take it out of the case.
My W94 is scratched, worn, and patches of the blueing are almost a brown from sweat: total joy to bang it around in the bush.
I would like a trench gun too. Also an Ithaca 37 DS Police.
First shotgun I ever shot. I was too small to hold it to my shoulder, held it under my arm, my dad had his hand on the butt. After a couple shots and it banged me pretty good I didn’t shoot another until I was able to hold the gun to my shoulder.
Very nice. My Grandfather had one.
Very, very nice.
I just re-bought a Savage Stevens 311.
Last year I was mentioning to my buddy that I wanted a carriage gun and he found this Savage side by side with 18″ barrels. A month or so ago I said to myself, “I need to get rid of some guns*” and sold it back to him. The day that I sold it I kept throwing it up to my shoulder saying “this gun fits me so well that I hate to get rid of it”. I’m getting it back on Wednesday.
*Yeah, I know: you can never be too thin, too rich, or have too many guns.
My problem is I always tell myself,’enough is enough, get proficient with the guns you have’…….and a couple months later I’m buying another having still not fired my ‘last’ gun.
Send some of your unshot guns to me for T&E purposes.
I envision that one day we’ll have Glibapalooza and there will be much Alcohol, tobacco and firearms. On that blessed day I will be brining the entire arsenal
/No euphemism
When that happens I will figure out how to travel by air with firearms. I don’t have very many that are even vaguely interesting, so I’d probably only need to bring a handful of pistols and maybe a shotgun (not because it’s good, just uncommon)

I have that same problem.
I got a 311, tennite stock, 16 gauge, for a high school grad gift. Sold it when I needed grocery money, I should have made the kids eat beans ’til payday.
I always thought that 16ga was a great compromise between 12 and 20. History seems to have proved me wrong as you can barely find 16ga anymore.
I wonder if 20 gauge 3″ mags led to the near demise of 16s. I think 16s are more popular in Europe
My great grandfather gave me his old 16 gauge side-by-side when I was in 5th grade. I still love shooting that gun. The rounds are expensive and hard to find so when I buy ammo for it I’ll get several hundred rounds at a time. Every quail season I will spend at least a couple days hunting with it versus my 12 or 20.
I have the Western Field version of that, also in 16ga. Best upland gun EVAH! Plus it was beat up when I got it, so I never cared if it got scratched.
I will be taking up Cowboy Action Shooting simply so I have an excuse to buy a coach gun. I honestly have no interest in SAAs (well, I think I don’t I’ve never shot one) but I’ll have to buy a pair of them to justify buying the cool short double-barrel.
Which seems kind of stupid now that I say it out loud.
I have an SAA in .45lc. it’s beautiful and fun, but I’d rather shoot my double action S&Ws. It does save on ammo, because it takes a while to reload.
There was a guy in my squad yesterday with a Colt Python (6″ barrel). He took literally triple the time to complete the stages.
I still wanted his gun though.
You want time between shots? Try shooting a blackpowder “mountain man” course. They can be great fun and a good test or marksmanship and primitive field skills.
Nice Animal! I have a Model 12 as well, not sure what sort it is though. Mine’s from 1920…
The best thing about making bourbon bbq sauce is one is required to drink bourbon while doing it.
Can confirm.
Plus; homemade BBQ sauce > syrupy store brand BBQ sauce. 10 times out of 10
Recipe? I hate most sugary sauces too.
I make a really simple Carolina style I love;
https://selfproclaimedfoodie.com/carolina-mustard-barbecue-sauce/
I use the base ingredients and experiment with the spices
Similar to [REDACTED].
Oooo mustard – that looks like a winner. Thanks
I haven’t played with mustard bbq sauces. I do like the vinegar finishing sauce for pulled pork.
For pork I am a fan of a vinegar/red pepper type of sauce from apparently the other part of S Carolina. Never tried the mustard version. For burnt ends I like a tomato bourbon concoction like SP posted some time ago. I combine her recipe and a cola bbq sauce recipe I saw once.
Three Bourbon Sauces
Sweet Baby Ray’s is pretty good.
I’ve had success with this by adding a bunch of minced garlic and ground cayenne.
Same with making bourbon caramel sauce.
I’m missing MLW’s Woke Charmed series. I think she should quit her writing job and dedicate herself here full time.
Seconded.
Thirded, it’s probably better for her liver to take a break.

Congratulations, Rhywun. :-p
Curious how the story doesn’t match the link.
But yeah. I hate that that pig won.
I’m always excited for Secret Nazi President. I feel the title is outdated though, the MSM moved on from him being a secret Nazi to an outright Nazi in mid-2018.
Yes, every mainstream news outlet now states as fact that he once officially said “Nazis are very fine people”.
I am drunk, half asleep, high, or all three.

I’m swilling on Yuengling Golden Pils and cooking Russian collusion burgers…..I should be packing for my work trip but…….F’ it. /Shrugs
I like Yuengling.
I have not had their Golden Pils yet.
Its ok and fine for a cheapish summer porch beer. Big Timber (I believe I sent you their Porter) just released an Octoberfest beer. I put it in the back of the fridge and am gong to do my best to not touch it until the first cool Sept day.
Side rant: I hate how they are putting out seasonal beers 2 months two early these days.
Fuck, the pumpkin beers are already hitting the shelves, and it’s August.
Good sign that IPAs everywhere all the time is coming to an end:) Plus football!
It’s also a sign that the wet hop and harvest IPA’s will be hitting the shelves soon. In football news, Baker Mayfield continues to endear himself to Cleveland fans.
Speaking of football.
Are we gonna have our fantasy league again.
If so I’m in.
I do my own fantasy league. It’s just the cheerleaders. I don’t fantasize about the players.

Anybody here familiar with Adult Somatic Disorder?
Does it involve anal?
Fortunately, not for me.
In other words, ask HM?
HM has a cute nickname for Spud. Peggy.
He told me yours is Toothy. You might want to work on your technique.
I LEARNED IT FROM YOU, DAD!
Holy fuck exactly how old is Spud?
Depends. In people years, 350.
Didn’t Jean Luc Picard have that?
He saw 5 lights!!!!
Whatever it is, I’m sure it’s Trump’s fault. I’ve been hearing all kinds of stories about his rabid anti-somatism from the CNN.
Often linked to anxiety and/or depression. My best friend was dealing with it for a while during post-partum depression.
And also apparently linked to the antidepressant I was on last summer. Triple whammy.
Damn. Sorry!

Will work for raclette.
I didn’t know what this is. but now I do. And I, too, like real cheese.
Raw milk, or GTFO.
At the creperie this morning, the special was crepe roquette. I misread it as crepe raclette, and was looking forwards to a crepe stuffed with potatoes, cheese and cornichons. What I got was bacon, arugula and cheese with a chili sauce, which was also delicious.
I wish I had a creperie:(
Mine is awesome, but I fear for its survival. The original owner was a Belgie but sold it to a couple who changed the focus to be more Quebecois. Honestly the new owners made it a better place, much more of the area. But the half of the couple that was the culinary driver ran off with one of the waitresses. The husband who stayed behind is doing a good job of keeping it financially solid but I disagree with some of his menu choices.
I went to my first one called Twisted Crepe in Asheville a few years ago and returned last fall on our second trip. I did not know how much I loved crepes until that first time. That’s still the best place I’ve been for crepes. You would think much of it from the looks of the place, order at counter type establishment but damn good.
I love crepes. I’ll have to check that place out on my next visit. I go to Asheville every December for the Xmas Jam.
My favorite restaurant in Asheville is Tupelo Honey Cafe. That’s a must stop on every visit.
There’s a decent place pretty close to me. If I’m going to that neighborhood, I’m usually biking, and taking the long route (~8-10 miles depending). I just wish the brewery in the neighborhood was better (the wing place is pretty good though).
If you do go there, hit Karen Donatelli’s across the street for dessert. Good stuff.
http://donatellicakedesigns.com/
That does look good!
I’ll have to check that place out also. I have a major sweet tooth!
There’s a hippy coffee shop close to my place that has great crepes. They also have a large craft beer selection and get some really good local and regional bands to play at their little place.
So jealous:)
My pets are determined to make the vet think I am insane. Oscar, the cat that thinks humans need to keep their hands to themselves, and will happily enforce that opinion with violence, is once again, the perfect patient. Babs, sweet, well-behaved Babs, is attempting to goose the vet and the vet tech while they examine Oscar, is trying to run circles around the examination table, peed on the floor and is whining because Oscar is getting attention and she isn’t. I look like a crazy woman as I explain that they don’t act like this at home.
My pets are determined to make the vet think I am insane.
Yours sound like a handful. My cats, despite being annoying in multiple ways, are pretty well behaved at the vet.
I look like a crazy woman as I explain that they don’t act like this at home.
Someday you may be saying the same thing about your offspring.
This is why I have no children and will never have children
Went the Banjos route, huh?
Heh I’m sure they’ve seen it all.
My cousin is a vet. There is no way Tulip’s critters even register!
One of our dogs has to be tranquilized before I take him to the vet and then he gets muzzled before they do any exam, or treatment. I don’t think they’re concerned about your nutty pups.
So I see you’ve met Jugsy’s boxer?
https://postimg.cc/Wt6WRYSR
I will note that Babs is a greyhound, aka needle nose. When she tries to stick her don’t up your butt, she really tries to get up there. To quote my neighbor, ‘do I look like Ned Beatty to you?’ Answer is , ‘well, kinda’
Don’t should be snoot
+1 squeal
My other dog is a nose hunter extraordinaire. He has no problem using his nose as a battering ram.
We had a giant maine coon that would go terminally ballistic at the vets. He ran across the ceiling a few times. We’d wrap him a towel, but he was crazy strong. Once the vet tech took control, he’d escape and go nuts. It was quite the sight. He used his ninth life a few years back. Still miss him. He purred louder than a lot of car mufflers.
Yeah, that’s why I like cats over dogs; cats are people.
And dogs are what people should aspire to be.
Cat’s are useless.
*scratches cat’s ear*
We had a Norwegian Elkhound that was a total sweethart. Small children couldn’t resist hugging him and he loved it. At the vets he was all Hounds of the Baskervilles. We’d tell them to muzzle him and they’d say “this sweet thing? Nah!” First attempt at examination and “Holy shit! Get the muzzle!”
Off the table and he was back to his usualy teddy bear self.

I’m working LA this week, you know, that town on the coast? My boss doesn’t understand the scale, or the logistics involved.
I can never hear that town’s name without thinking of Bill and Ted.
Bella and I really like the red roof inn here, feral cats, close to the freeways I like to use, I grew up about 5 miles away so the bill and Ted thing stuck with us locals, 80s ya know….
I was surprised that Cali had Circle K’s.

Any strange things afoot?
In 1988, the company sent a letter to its over 8,000 employees announcing that it will cut off the medical coverage of those who become sick or injured as a result of AIDS, alcohol, drug abuse or self-inflicted wounds. The company stated that “There are certain lifestyle decisions that we are just not going to assure the results of.”

Not sure how I ended up here but damn, I like how there isn’t even a pretense of objectivity:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_genocide_conspiracy_theory
I didn’t read any of it but just came across this:
LOL
It’s interesting that they consider the Trump tweets about South African farmers to be a dog whistle to the idea of white genocide. Wikipedia is an unreliable source for just about anything that’s politically tinged.
I’m trying to understand how it doesn’t even show as disputed or lacking citation. It’s almost entirely unsupported assertions.
I could hardly come up with a topic of conversation that I would trust wikipedia to handle less fairly.
And then Akira does exactly that 🙂
Wiki is great for non controversial things. I wouldn’t trust it much for political topics.
Just don’t read the article about “Russian Collusion in the 2016 Election” unless you want to give yourself stress-induced hypertension.
But yea, “dog whistle” – I love that term. It’s so popular with the Left because it’s unfalsifiable. I could just as easily say that Lefties are using “dog whistle anti-Semitic terms” when they lambast the “ultra-wealthy”.
/Prove to us what he said wasn’t racist!!!
Strange how the media in general seems to have no issue with constantly demanding proof of a negative.
Doesn’t Wiki give people the opportunity to edit postings? I’ve corrected a number of Civil War topics over the years.
It is entirely user-generated. Anyone can sign up and write whatever they want.
You should look into WP:OWN
I don’t yet find an entry for “glibertarians”

Deep dish,
Make a few edits and you’ll have enough material for a Glib article. Wiki authors can get very testy.
There was a case where a guy couldn’t get his edits to stick on his own article (he was the sbject of the page.
Yeah. There was a guy who had absolute control over several articles who insisted that a large scavenging bird of South America and California was called a “condol,” because he had a picture of some Japanese ephemera stating so.
But he was an autist, so he had power on wikipedia. He had MANY other people who insisted he was wrong banned.
I can’t imagine getting myself tangled in that morass.

Bringing up the shootings again… I am really curious if the structure of K-12 schooling contributes to mental health issues, some of which result in the mindset of a mass shooter. Obviously there are multiple influences on a mass shooter, but I’d like someone to focus on what K-12 schooling does to kids mental health. Years of demanding compliance to a strict protocol, ridiculously stupid zero tolerance policy and a toxic social environment can’t be good for kids.
Zero tolerance in some ways and lord of the flies in others.
Yes. Especially the past 20 years. It seems to be becoming more and more tyrannical.
Was listening to a podcast (Dave Smith vs The Jacket I think) where the point was made that public schools are identical to medium security prisons. Isolate kids from their families and siblings, force them into an unnatural age-caste system, subject them to angry, lazy public employees who kill all love of learning, stifle creativity and individuality at every turn.
I’m surprised we don’t crank out more sociopaths.
Not to mention that you’re surrounded by bullies but you get in trouble if you defend yourself. Actually, when I briefly worked at a prison, the Rules Infraction Board would actually let you off if it were observed that you didn’t start the fight and acted in self-defense. Schools are even worse in that regard; the line I always heard was “well you were BOTH fighting!”
Also, the food is total shit.
Yeah, now they have metal detectors and “resource” cops. They’re just cops. Walking around in the halls, trying to find reasons to bust you. I feel bad for kids today.
It’s only going to get worse. The kids today have to eat Michelle Obama’s “healthy” food. If you’ve seen any of that, you’ll quickly realize that kids attitudes can only get worse.
You mean they don’t have the fried burritos anymore that still have ice crystals in the center?
I think that’s the big one. When kids are bullied for years on end but usually get no help from the school other than “just ignore them and they’ll go away“, it’s going to leave them angry, hopeless, devoid of self-worth, and hungry for revenge. Dangerous combination.
“just ignore them and they’ll go away“, it’s going to leave them angry, hopeless, devoid of self-worth, and hungry for revenge.
This is also true of hemorrhoids.
*shrug* I liked school.
I think there’s a necessary component of “batshit crazy” that needs to be present before you can lay any blame on school for possibly making it worse. That we are not identifying, or we’re flat-out ignoring, that component seems pivotal to me.
I’m just asking could it be a component. There are likely multiple contributing factors.
Meh, when 95% of the kids in america go to public school it’s hard to blame the actions of a tiny tiny tiny number of them on it. Much like when Ozzy Osborne caused those kid to off themselves, he sold a gazillion albums and was on the radio constantly but only managed a handful of victims, not very effective.
I somewhat agree with this. It’s a match being struck in a tinderbox type situation. Do you blame the match or the tinderbox, or do they both share the blame?
Personally, I think that school, especially high school, is a bit of a pressure cooker, and kids aren’t well suited or trained to have perspective on the situation. It’s a combination of one’s entire social life revolving around a bunch of kids the same age, the all-encompassing nature of school these days, the inability to deescalate or avoid social conflict, and the lack of discipline/coping skills.
School is just one piece of the puzzle, but I think it is a piece.
It’s only .00001 % of kids who do this. Obviously the rest either like it, or tolerate it to some degree. Even the kids who HATE, HATE, HATE it don’t shoot the place up and commit seppuku out of the blue one day. They just ditch a lot. It’s something else here. The level of hopelessness needed to rationalize doing this must be immense. I mean, a Texan who thinks this is the correct action to confront hispanic migration? That’s just crazy. Anyways these “kids” are twenty somethings. They’re adults.
I think that having ben bullied is sometimes a fact in these cases but not always. The book “Columbine” set the record straight, Klebold and Harris were not allied and actually were somewhat popular within their particular clique. I’d say in a larger sense its that the environment isolates kids for lots of reasons and it doesn’t just leave the least popular kids disaffected and lonely.
*factor
I bet that’s one part. It’s become a witches brew for concocting murderous psychos: prisonlike schools, constant “MUH RACISM” “MUH SEXISM” “MUH BALLS! WAX ‘EM!”, online mob behavior, nanny state, nasty and violent state, etc… Don’t know about these shooters specifically, but there is plenty of blame to go around I’m sure.
I agree with you that public school is high on the list of contenders for contributing to this crap.
Straffinrun…well, just read it. You will see.

You just linked to an article about it.

I don’t hear much about either of them anymore. I had to google to remind myself which was which.

I typically drink a pot of coffee a day. For various reasons, I didn’t have any today. Now I have a headache. My options are bear out the headache or make some coffee and not be able to fall asleep tonight. I’m not sure which I prefer.
You allergic to ibuprofen?
Cognac or Armagnac until sleep time. Expresso for breakfast. Problem solved.
There is wisdom here, that is worthy of your consideration.
Sequence confirmed.
Sounds like a good time to give up coffee for good. I suggest V8 as a replacement, you can add vodka on days that you won’t be using power tools.
Without coffee there is no reason to get up in the morning.
Beer?
I like caffeine. Ignore Hyperbole
So Hyperbole is wrong? Huh.
Don’t mess with the flower. I learned that yesterday.
I don’t remember being rude to anyone.
Not really, something about A/C being bad for the environment and therefore should be outlawed. I was with you on your response, but cracked wise about how i’d have said chill out. Get it, A/C? anyway…
Oh, I remember. Not really directed at you, just at the sentiment.
I will not be giving up coffee. I will have the usual pot tomorrow. I’d do the V8 thing, but it doesn’t taste anything like coffee.
Also, Already took Ibuprofen, It did nothing. I just swallowed a spoonful of instant coffee and the headache minimized in less than a minute.
Caffeine withdrawal is real. I suffer the same and also have used the instant coffee route in a pinch. Drink more coffee!
Yep. Suffered it myself, even though I only drink a cup or two a day.
Ignore Hyperbole
Always good advise.
No way! I’d rather die.
Hadda remind me? I’m going in for blood testing tomorrow. No morning mud for me.
Acetaminophen works way better for headaches IME.
Yeah, but you drink far less than the average Glib. Acetaminophen is toxic to the liver. If we’re supposed to ingest anything causing hepatotoxicity, it better well get us drunk or high.

SECOND HAND SMOKE KILLS! All smokers proceed to this box where you are both inhaling first and second smoke.
They still allow smoking there? How retro.
Starting to crack down because of the 2020 Olympics, but yeah, there are smoking areas almost everywhere.
Good grief. We are failing as a species.
Smoking “rooms” first started appearing in the 70’s. It’s been a ratchet turn at a time since then. I remember smoking in the bank, at the pool, on buses and aircraft. In the bank lines they even had ashtrays atop the cattle chute posts for your convenience. I wouldn’t want to go back to that free for all but banning smoking in bars and pubs was a step too far for me. Now I just drink at home.
Yeah, I remember the stinking office my mom worked at when I started working there after school (she and one other gal were the only smokers). I’m fine those days are gone.
But I totally agree the ratchet has gone way too far.
And I won’t go to a bar that doesn’t have outside smoking. Fortunately I have little interest in going to bars any more.
I miss playing competitive Eight ball but other than that, not so much.
You have to call the number on the stall wall.
OK. *Dials, recognizes wife’s voice*. Dammit.

Do they talk at urinals in gay clubs? Or is that still a bridge too far even there?
Talking is the least of what goes on.
Or so I’ve heard.
EEWWW, that’s where the pee comes out!
More seriously, talking is quite normal in that environment. The liquor which tends to loosen tongues helps.
Are you in Minnesota?
Speaking of things to come, would the Glibertariat be interested in an analysis of the US Bill of Rights vs. the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?
I mean, I think we all know how the analysis will turn out, but the specifics may be interesting.
Could possibly turn it into a bracket including other rights documents.
absolutely
The way I think, I can see a chart of rights vs countries showing what is documented where. Of course, even in the US, what is plainly documented is often different from what is enforced or protected. I’m pretty sure the USSR guaranteed freedom of speech, for example.
Separately, I could have some thoughts about how in every country everything is constitutional in a way.
I’ve never actually read the canadian charter, would be interested. But perhaps to expand it take a look at all the other declarations of rights, even going back to the French revolution; as most of them are proto-socialist in granting things that aren’t actually rights, but rather needs or desires, positive rights as we say now.
+1 Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Yeah! I think looking at a broad spectrum would be interesting. The criteria on which they are rated would be a good source of debate. As you say, are they about positive or negative rights? Do they cover the rights of everyone or a specific group? Are they indiviually-oriented or collectively-oriented? Do they enumerate specific rights or place limits on government?
South Africa guarantees housing, I’ve heard that isn’t working out super well.
Venezuela probably does too.
I was 17 when the Constitution was “repatriated” and I remember most of my cohort being exited about the document. Of course we were all low level criminals and miscreants at the time. Who could see the future? What teenager thinks that a pendulum swings?
Indubitably! I’ve been harping on this for years. The rest of our Canuckistani Brethren would love an article, I’m sure!
If we’re enacting your labor, I’d like to read about what rights Hong Kong’ers have (at least for now) relative to their mainland counterparts and how that’s changing over time.
Maybe everyone should take a country and send their report to you for consolidation

Am I the only one here that has been libertarian my whole life? Was everyone else once a zealous conservative or a naive hippy?
I call dibs on naive hippy!
Crap. Second.
Lots of room in the tattered tent, BP. Easy girls and shared foodstuffs for all!
What? No hallucinogens? Bogarts.
Plenty of that, new friend…
Don’t you hold some un-libertarian views on IP? and what’s your position on dog fights.
Where’s SIV?
Fucking a chicken?
If I’m the One True libertarian, nothing I believe can be un-libertarian. And if I’m the only one to hold libertarian beliefs my entire life I am therefore the One True Libertarian.*
*It is not logical that one’s identity (name, birth date etc), which is just as much a creation as other ip can be protected if other ethereal ideas are not.
*Dogs are property, do with them as you wish, even if I may find it disgusting.
*It is not logical that one’s identity (name, birth date etc), which is just as much a creation as other ip can be protected if other ethereal ideas are not. – what? Two people can have the same name and birth date independently. Two people can have the same idea independently. One gets a patent cause he makes it faster to the bureaucrats and has monopoly on that idea?
That isn’t anti-IP argument, just an anti-how IP is done now argument.
I was a sort-of cultural liberal in a past life – because that’s all I saw around me. But I wasn’t much interested in any of it. So, mostly apolitical unless pressed on some issue.
I was raised to be conservative, but I always thought if conservatives wanted government to be small then they shouldn’t demand so much of government to enforce their values.
My mom was apolitical – that’s probably where I got it. (There was no dad in the picture.) The liberal part came from growing up in the inner city and being constantly surrounded by it. Hell, I’m still apolitical in the sense that I find the practice of politics disgusting, even if my thoughts on various matters have changed since I was young.
I’ve been a political junkie as long as I can remember. I remember staying up to watch the presidential election coverage in 92. I would have been 9. I remember in 88 when I was in kindergarten we held a mock election, and being the only one aware of what was actually going on. (sorry if that makes you feel old)
My Mother was very involved in leftist politics. She was the executive assistant for our MLA when I was a boy. MLA being comparable to a State Senator down in the land of the free. Dad didn’t care much one way or the other because it kept her out of his hair for the most part. I still have my Party card somewheres around here.
To be honest I was just a libertine. I saw pretty early how the socialist sausage was made but the girls and the drugs were too much fun to pass up. Wish I’d had a mentor to slap me upside the head.
Nope.
You’re too young to have an opinion, this is grown-up talk.
I was mostly apolitical from an ideological point of view before libertarianism. I was anti-commie and anti PSD, and vaguely wished for less corruption
Pie learned early that Penile Suction Device should not be mistaken for Mom’s Electrolux.

Do you really need me to give an answer?
Friday – Pie has a question for Scotland – mostly I could not think of an article title… Good morning Glibbies
Good morning, Pie.
Morning/afternoon Pie.
I hope it doesn’t involve sheep fucking, that is so cliche.
Burger at a kaiten sushi restaurant. I’m usually down for the bizarre, but hell no.

Are those onion rings? Hashbrowns? Calamari?
The onion rings are not good either.
No idea what’s in those buns.
Could you help explain why those are weird, straffin? I’m sure they’re not, but they look like chicken sandwiches, or burgers surrounded by onion rings. Not this.
I’d eat that without the bread.
Also, do what you’re good at. Why even try serving a burger? It’s sushi restaurant.
Fair enough, but you have probably forgotten the expectation of US fast-food patrons.
Also, I mis-wrote that sentence, as I was sure they weren’t chicken sandwiches or burgers. That said, a tuna burger could work. Just get some Altoids.
Jesus. Lovecraft didn’t dream up a horror like that.
Jesus, lettuce under the meat? what kind of maniac does that?
Not Jesus, that is for sure.
OK, just did an image search and this is way more common than I would have believed, we are well and truly fucked as a society. Let the Muslims and/or the Beaners invade it’s over.
Yeah, local restaurant here does it. I blame the Mexican cook!
Anyone want to explain this phobia?
In the last photo it looks like those two brains under glass are communicating with each other.
Abby Normal?
I actually prefer “The Man With Two Brains”. I’ll hand over my Glib passport at the entry door after my cardboard box walk of shame.
No love for The Man With the Screaming Brain?
Since when did Bruce try out for Basil Fawlty??
And, how is it that I never expected him to nail that look?
REASON #975 I hate people. My brother and his wife came over today, my brother helped me cut up an apple tree that fell in a storm. I’m grateful for that, as I don’t trust myself with a real chainsaw and my little electric one would have taken hours to the job done. But his wife decided she needed to clean in the house at the same time. Fine, I’m not great at cleaning. They decided, without consulting me, to throw away my living room drapes because they stank from my years of smoking. Ok, fine they did stink. I simply asked for affirmation they would replace those drapes with ones as well insulated (as those windows cause major drat in the winter). And my brother goes off about how he has spent so much money replacing things (none of which I asked for, in fact I had to spend my meager life savings remodeling a room because his wife didn’t like the ceiling and they demolished it without my consent).
C, even I am beginning to dislike your family.
And these are the ones I like the best.
Really–just sell the land and move here. You can visit as needed. I’ll even see about getting you a window A/C unit.
Ugh. Next time they’ll show up with a camera crew in tow. Boundaries, how do they work?
There is a reason I moved 333.3 miles away from family.
That’s a very specific distance. I suspect that Numerology is involved.
::nods three times in agreement::
::counts fingers toes and penis three times fast::
So, is OCD just Numerology that gets out of
handcontrol? Most of my family remains within 155mm howitzer range of the parents. My ex’s family had multiple people living on the same block as the parents. I moved out to go to college and never looked back. I then spent 30 years in the Army living far far away. Today I live three time zones away in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and sometimes that is too close.
I live just far enough away from my old drinkin’ buddies that none of us are willing to venture the distance because laws. Works for me.
Tossing you fixtures and appointments without so much as a “by your leave” sounds a bit beyond the pale. I can’t think of anyone who would be cool with that. Not even a little bit, actually. In fact, they have these people who offer commercial services in cleaning drapery… that’s gotta be cheaper than buying new. So yeah, I’d be pretty pissed.
But it also sounds like you guys have an odd relationship. It certainly sounds like he feels that the need is there to be a caretaker in the relationship. I don’t know either of you, so I’ll ask a question as a disinterested arbiter: How would your brother describe your lifestyle to a third party? Would it be a little more critical than you’d be comfortable with? And would it be closer to the truth than your own self-assessment?
I have a sister-in-law that might say the same thing about her sister. She gets a lot of help from us. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been over there in the middle of the night to fix something or counsel her through some depression or the other. We recently bought her about $500 worth of furniture because she had guests coming over and didn’t have anywhere for them to sleep. She’s just terrible with money, and not much of a housekeeper. So her sister comes over and helps her clean up every so often.
And after a bit of unsolicited advice from her sister, I can definitely see her making the exact same complaints. In fact, despite the fact that I’ve sent a healthy 5 figures her way, I’m quite certain she’s said the same thing to her sister about not asking for the help.
Sibling things are complicated. But in the end having someone care enough to overstep their bounds and toss your drapes without asking is a net positive, so take some solace in that. (But yeah, you gotta address that part – not from the “hey you owe me new drapes” point of view. From the “Hey, that’s my house – you can’t just remodel or destroy stuff without my say-so” point of view. Even hoarders get more respect than that.)
Did he ask for that specific “help”? No, he asked his brother to cut up a fallen tree, not to let his sister-in-law start Martha Stewarting hither and yon. As always the correct reply is “Fuck Off Slaver!”
Yeah, that was kinda my point. There definitely has to be some boundary setting. But not about who is giving money to who, or who is buying this or that.
The boundary has to be more of “I think it is great that you guys care about me and want to help…. but you just can’t change things in someone’s house without asking first. And you definitely can’t destroy things without asking. I know you mean well, but that’s just not going to be OK with anyone. ”
Arguing about “hey, you owe me new drapes” is the wrong frame. That puts the whole thing in a “you gotta gimme stuff” frame for them – which is not the crux of the conflict and allows them to see things as “ungrateful and greedy” instead of understanding the deep trespass of coming in someone’s house and tearing stuff up. Good intentions or not, that’s just out of line.
So If you frame it that way, and wrap it in one of those complement sandwiches that they talk about, then maybe they’ll be able to think about things more clearly.
I understand the conflict really well… my ex wife had a cousin show up with kid in tow one summer – uninvited. She stayed for over 2 weeks. Two… Weeks. And I’ve only met her maybe twice. And she goes in my kitchen and moves everything around while I’m at work. And cooked a bunch of my food – and this lady was the absolute worst cook I’ve ever encountered. So I had someone wreck my kitchen and ruin hundreds of dollars worth of food – that I had to eat and pretend to like just to keep the peace. The wife finally had to kick her out. For 2 weeks she kept faith with family and wouldn’t hear of any criticisms… but I knew I had her when I was working in the yard in the 100 degree heat (literally) and she came out to help me turn over a bunch of hard clay to make a flower bed. If you are a 105 lb woman and you are swinging a mattock in the 2 o’clock sun in a heat wave in Georgia just so you don’t have to be in the same building with your house guests… it is time to make a change.
My housing situation is…complicated. Suffice to say, I live on sort of the family homestead, and I encourage my family to come and spend time here. My brother and his wife want to some here with their kids, I encourage it. They don’t think it’s clean enough, ok, they can clean. But they sometimes go to far and my brother rolls over and then gets mad when I don’t do the same. I live here 365 days a year, they come here maybe 30; and they get upset when I don’t want them to start a project I’ll have pay to finish.
See Rhywun’s comment above, Comrade.
I like my house though. I’d choose it above any people I know.
Oof. That sounds really complicated.
I missed out on today’s discussion so I could work with kids at church. So I didn’t even know about the second shooting until this evening.
It was kinda nice being out of the loop for that one.
But the wife was all fired up. This pushes every button her mom-genes have – well, except that nobody snatched a kid. So she taped CNN and put it on later.
Aaaaaand that’s what I have to comment about. They covered the Donald making a statement. So, as he’s walking up to the microphone they repeatedly mention that he’s coming back from his golf weekend. The way they kept emphasizing that I’m gonna guess that they spent the day talking about how he was so insensitive to be playing golf. But I didn’t hear that part, so that’s not really fair.
But I did hear this: After he offered platitudes and said things about hate having no place, they come back to the studio reporter who does the classic “what he just said” synopsis that may be the dumbest thing in all of television. And once she’s finished, they transition to
spinanalysis mode. And immediately, I mean immediately, the first thing they say is “the President did not mention white supremacists in his statement”. 3 or 4 times in the next minute and a half to two minutes they made that point. “He didn’t mention white supremacists!” Dude says hate has no place, but no.. not good enough. You are a complete racist if you don’t call out the white supremacists.I don’t know where we are on the final determinations of motive, but I’m dead sure that they hadn’t determined anything at the time he was speaking. Well, the FBI didn’t. I’m sure CNN’s crack team of facebook reading interns had the whole thing sussed out within 5 minutes.
Anyway, the fervor with which CNN went after tying these shootings to the President was kinda breathtaking. They were really all-in on the “Trump caused this” spin. And they were also kinda desperate to get a second shot at the “he said Both Sides!!” slander.
I know, you wonder why I would subject myself to such things… well, when the wife has a full-blown case of TDS, you gotta do what you gotta do….
I read an article, or heard a newscast, I don’t remember which; the other day where they said Trump said ‘and I quote’ where what they repeated was not a quote, but a parphrase. To quote a Geico ad, “that’s not how that works. Jesus saves you 15%’
Well, Geico ads ARE quite a bit more entertaining and informative than newscasts.
Maybe we could combine….. Nah; that’d be stupid.
I’m struggling to process this, TBH. Isn’t CNN pretty much the same any time you turn it on…?
You are struggling to process it? I have to live with it. She even rewinds stories if she thinks she missed something, so I have to hear it 3 times. If I ever blow my brains out, you’ll have a pretty good guess as to why….
Wait. Are you our friend from Illinois with a wife who does exactly this and stared referring to herself as an “activist” after the 2016 election?
I think there were a lot of wives who developed full blown cases of TDS after that election.
After the shooting story she was ranting about nobody needing multiple clips that hold so much ammunition. This from a flyover country girl who’s family serves me venison in everything every time we visit.
“hey, want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? It has venison peanut butter – you can barely taste the venison!!”
(that’s an exaggeration. But only just.)
It’s so tiresome. I have no love for the man (or any politician), so I really, really resent that these insane TDS people make me have to defend him when they start in with this crap. There are so many actual reasons to complain about him (and the rest). You don’t have to make stuff up.
Yep. I didn’t vote for the man, I won’t vote for the man. But they intend to turn me into Gary.
I’ve actually read a couple of leftist columnists starting to say the same thing. Stop making me defend Trump!
I don’t understand how he’s able to do it. Instead of attacking him for the stupid stuff he actually does, they keep going on these insane tangents.
I know I’m way out on a limb with this one, because history has already decided it, but the whole “good people on both sides” thing is a perfect example. Everyone in the media (and consequently everyone else) got every single detail of that story backwards. And Trump saying “there are good people on both sides” is exactly the right thing – everyone should believe that. Because if you don’t, what you are saying is that “my political enemies are all evil and irredeemable”, and we know exactly where that sort of mentality leads. And what is funny is, they can’t see it. They project so hard, they all think it is the other side that is violent, blinded by team-think and stupid.

Don’t know if this made the rounds. I got it forwarded from a different twitter, but this is what google coughed up.
It’s because the MSM have an agenda and an unsympathetic president who makes it easy for them to pound the country over the head with their agenda every second.
^^ So much this.
I might be OK with it if they, and their ilk, were this negative with virtually every other politician/political act that didn’t result in legislative roll-back, but Noooooooooo! They just gotta bend over for people in power.
I’m convinced at this point that the MSM want nothing less than a race war. Imagine the ratings!
They put Al Sharpton on his own show. They stick a mic in front of him any time they think he can provoke some conflict.
Of course they want a race war.
That dude actually got people killed with his BS. Not “ooh, I’m drawing some oblique conclusions”… Actual no-arguing with it murdered because of his rhetoric.
You put that kind of person on your station, it isn’t because you are all about diversity.
You just need to find a wood working or mechanical project that takes you out of the room. Either that or bring home a puppy.
My father in law used to spend all of his time in the garage. Every time we went up to the great white north to visit them, he’d be out in the garage. He had a little black and white TV and a fridge for beer. He’d hang out in the garage all day. This is in the dead of winter, with single digit highs. As a single guy, and later as a newlywed, I thought it was a strange thing to do. Why watch the game on a little black and white when you have a big screen in the living room?
After 15 years of marriage and three kids… yeah… I get it.
Was there any mention of Trump causing the two mass shootings in Chicago this morning? 25 people were shot before 5am this morning in Chicago, including 2 separate incidents where 7 people were shot.
Hmmmm…. didn’t see CNN break in with that story….
‘Those n*****s don’t matter’ -CNN
Well, finished my newest article, and have submitted it for approval (fingers crossed).
And now, let’s stir the pot a little. Circumcision, deep-dish, and HOAs
HOA’s can lick my taint but if you bought, you get what you paid for. The only reason that I’m not living in Victoria right now is that I couldn’t find fee-simple property. Everything in my price range was leased land. Fuck that noise. I moved back up here where i have clear title to my shitty little corner of purgatory. Sucks because I really liked living down there, the job paid well and I could golf on Xmas day.
“ America is terrified.”
Pathetic, weak appeal to “authority” from a rag that used to defend freedom.
Fuck you, New York Post.
I used to hide under the covers when I was a toddler, too.
‘Ban Weapons of War’, well we did that already.
It’s toddler mentality. “Ban it!” Yeah, that works. Fucking morons.
Please, NYP Editorial Board–DIAF.
What they don’t get right we could almost cram into the Grand Canyon.
I hope they are wrong about “America is scared”.
Sure, these nutjobs are evil and killing all these random people is terrible and sad and even tragic.
But scared? The murder rate is half of what it was when I was a kid. Half. And I used to run around unsupervised for 12 hours a day in the summer. We sure as hell weren’t scared back then when you had more than twice the chance of getting murdered or raped, and probably 5 times the chance of being killed in a car crash.
It is weird. It is like the safer you make things, the more afraid people get. I suppose that is why the safest people on the planet – kids at expensive colleges – are so terrified that they need a safe space to run to when someone says words they don’t like.
Yeah, my 80 year old aunt thinks things are worse now they have been in her lifetime. In that time Congress was taken hostage by Puerto Rican Nationalists, the Manson family was on the prowl, the Weather Underground was bombing people…But there was no national news focused on the danger narrative, therefore things are worse now.
I heard someone talking about the terrible loss of life these days due to war – caused by the evil rich people who profit from war. “We never used to have this much war”….
Uh… yeah.
Peace is breaking out all over the world, but Trump is presiding over the most war-mongering nation in history.
It is just bizarre. And it isn’t just WWII, WWI, Civil War, etc. they are forgetting – they think that before western society, people just didn’t go to war and people didn’t die in wars in great numbers. Holy crap…. the further you go back, the more continuous warfare becomes. Stone age people were killing all the time. Don’t believe the history written in the skeletons we’ve found, just go ask a researcher who works on one of those tribes like the Yanomami.
Paging Dr. Evil.
I mean, are they trying to tie warfare to the number of people on the planet….? Which, even then, doesn’t make much sense.
Really… I think they managed to off more people in a couple of hours in the Civil War than we’ve managed to lose in this entire post 9-11 debacle.
The wife kept repeating “nobody wants to take away all your guns!” as she said we have to do a buy-back of all of these guns that can shoot so many people so quickly….
Ok, skip the lack of understanding that “guns that can shoot so many people so quickly” kinda covers “all your guns”….. they absolutely and unequivocally want to take all your guns. They don’t really hide that – unless they are on a more mainstream program trying to get incremental gun bans. But go to DC or New York and you’ll know. They don’t want anyone except the police to have guns.
But the news kept repeating that talking point, so it comes out the other end as if it were an original thought.
Oh, police unions:
NeverPlease changeAnd still the tax reason why Garner was killed goes on unabated. Fuck.
Gotta get that green!
Only a racist would point that out. The true reason for his killing is because cops are racists.
One thing you’ll never see the Big Gov types say-
“Well, cops ARE racist! So, the government shouldn’t take money that comes in from policing!”
Cue the horns
Hey, El Paso Asshole: When you kill the smart people, all that’s left are the your fellow fuckwits
Not saying he should have killed these people…just making a point.
Also, the shooter apparently attend class this year at the campus where I work.
::long sigh::
Just to underline the stupid….
The efficiency of natural gas as a heating fuel is 100%. You heat water – Near as makes no difference 100% efficient. Heat an oven… same deal.
Electric power? Well, now you have transmission losses. That currently averages about 6.5%, but it varies greatly with distance and load. And this is California, which is notorious for having to buy out of state power and for having brownouts under heavy load conditions – so I’m gonna guess that theirs is worse. And then there’s the efficiency of the power plant. 60-80% there, depending on the source.
Anyway, you get the picture. Maybe you have 1.5 lbs of CO2 emitted by the power plants for every 1lb of CO2 that would have been emitted out the house. Maybe a little more… But, maybe 40% of that power will come from renewables…. so you are back to where you started from, give or take. Except you don’t get to cook on a gas range or on a gas grill out back.
Well, California can’t NOT virtue signal. It doesn’t matter how much virtue they actually lack, or, who will be hurt by all this.
Maybe if they mandated that all power must be generated by burning plastic straws….
Hey…..that might just work!
Up here they’re still fighting a Hydro project that will inconvenience ten farming families. There are plans to build a plastic manufacturing plant and the City Council is trying to implement a plastic bag ban. You can’t make this shit up.
Did we get overloaded on stupid? Woe be to us glibs!
Dunno what happened.
I’m just waiting for my sourdough baguette to come out of the oven, then it’s off to bed.
I……ummm…..OK, well get your kink on, I suppose.
“snert”
Hey, ditching most bread types , because “carbs”, has been so not fun.
In fact, I’m tempted to say it’s been a huge pain in th-Oh, right….
You know that when it gets to be the wee hours of the morning for the majority of us, things quiet down here.
Several of the DerpBook GW/40K groups of which I was once fond have really succumbed to the woke crowd; artists like John Blanche are wholly unwelcome. Observing the Left’s Long March is depressing.
Who uses facebook?
I was stationed at Ft. Bliss for a spell and came away with a rather unfavorable impression of El Paso. Ciudad Juarez, however, was quite nice in the early 1990s – good food, nice people, cheap booze; it just sucked that it was often off limits to US service personnel.
I’m really enjoying these Lindybeige videos. The story of Jack Renton – The White Headhunter, is amazing.
Yeah, I’m thinking I’m going to need to stop watching the news in the morning.
The whole “shootings are Trumps fault” & “GUN CONTROL!” is just too much sensory overload. *Waves at DNC guy*. They’ve really got their talking points set for this week.
How about some Catfish and the Bottlemen – Cocoon to get your day started?
