In high school I worked in the school cafeteria with about 7-8 other classmates. We got free lunches, all we could eat, extra desserts when we finished washing the dishes (pre-plastic) and we got paid. There wasn’t a better job for a teen age boy. The cooks were super nice, some had their own kids in school. Lunch cost .15 but even at that a few kids bagged their sandwiches. My parents were happy and I’m guessing the other families were too.
I went to a private school and worked the lunchroom to get a reduction in tuition. It was great. I got to eat before anyone else got their gross hands into it.

Our kids’ public HS has free breakfast, and not just cereal – custom omelettes, etc. It’s mind blowing.
We have free breakfasts as well, but its all simple carb with no protein or fat in it. Every once in a while they have low-fat turkey sausage (the school gave up trying to offer any kind of pork, which makes sense given the demographics, but turkey sausage is just cruel).

Nothing like picking up a rental car and having to spend the next 30 minutes trying to figure out how to set the AC and change the radio station.
The 2019 Jetta rental we last had was actually pretty easy to use. Heater/AC control were still knobs. Radio didn’t take too long to figure out. Mileage, with the 1.4T engine, was amazing considering the mountain driving we were doing in North Carolina. Averaged 36-40mpg mixed. Just a fyi.
My Mustang – thankfully – is all knobs and buttons. Switching between audio sources is pretty painful though getting to the submenus is something I don’t like to do while driving.
My buddies get all excited with the stupid gadgets. I just got a brand new Volks and a lot of the features are pointless and unnecessary. For the heck of it I read through the options and realized I’m never going to use – let alone remember – half the stuff. Really superfluous and opulent for its own sake.
Fiddling around a touch screen is no different than texting.
Know what I use? THE FUCKING RADIO and that’s it. I still use maps and if we have to use the GPS I have my wife look at it on her phone as I focus on the road.
I don’t use the radio part of the ‘radio’, in fact whenever the stupid car switches to the radio because it fails to properly detect the media I’m trying to use, it pisses me right off. I ended up replacing it with an MP3 player.
I’ve never understood the whole “setting one temperature for the passenger and one for the driver” thing. We’re in the same damn box two sitting feet from each other.

Sounds like he is saying the detailed digital thermostats are not helpful, and he preferred the old analog sliders or knobs. I tend to agree that temperature setting to 1° Fahrenheit is needless (and inaccurate given the geometry of a car interior), but also don’t see the difficulty as lowering the number is exactly the same as moving the know toward the blue side.
That said I consider the touch screen controls dangerous. The more cool displays I can switch between and fiddle with the more likely my ‘glance’ at the display has moved from a single (not very dangerous) second to a perceptually identical (but getting very dangerous) 5 or 10. We are critters that have a very hard time evaluating how long some short duration task takes, and at highway speed that trivial 10 second look at the screen is quite a distance.
We also need to bring back nixie tube output.

The operators of cars, ships, and airplanes rely on muscle memory and the shape of physical controls to change system settings without looking at them. Touchscreens are an issue in these applications.

I’ve been hoping for a long time (in vain) that touch screens are just a fad. They are okay for some applications, but not everything. When I’m messing around with a touchscreen iPod there are way too many mistaken clicks.
The walkman I have has a physical switch to disable the touchscreen. Even then, there are mistaken commands when I forget to switch it back to the proper ‘off’ position.
I do think we’re going to move away from touch interfaces in places they don’t belong, but keep them in kiosks, because they’re easier to clean than physical buttons.

I got a deep scratch on one lense from the corner of a metal shelf, luckily had my glasses on. Went back and got it replaced for free, even though it was my own negligence, because of the warranty/time frame.
The anti-glare coating scratches up something terrible. I used to rub my lenses – pre-glare – on my shirt with no-long term effects. Latest glasses – which have every little add-on, scratch easily. So now I have to carry lens wipes with me.
Yeah, I have all the bells/whistles too. I only clean mine with the spray and lint free cloth. Sometimes they are pretty dirty but I wait ’til I can clean them with the right stuff. I have had similar problems as you mentioned before I got tired of scratched or buying new glasses.
These are the best for cleaning glasses.
I have some extraordinarily expensive lenses (progressives with all the extras) and I rely on those to keep them clean.
