I’ve tried many times over the years to give up coffee, but man it’s hard. I don’t drink a ton of it; maybe 5 cups a week, but I have noticed when I don’t drink any at all for a whole week I’m really cranky.
Part of it is the caffeine, and part of it is that I really love coffee.
Like love love.
I’ve loved coffee since I was 15 years old to a degree that has been known to frustrate my loved ones because I can’t settle for just plain average coffee.
I love the flavour of good coffee. I love the process of crafting a perfect latte with velvety microfoam. And yeah, I love the pick-me-up.
So for this edition of Products You Need, I thought I’d share my favourite coffees and coffee tools.
Hario Ceramic Coffee Grinder
This is a staple in my household. I buy whole bean coffee, and grind it fresh “to order” every morning.
I dislike the traditional blade grinders for coffee because they chop the beans while this manual burr grinder crushes the beans.
The grinder attaches to any standard mason jar, but I only grind as much as I need. The grind is adjustable all the way down to Turkish.
Some reviewers have voiced complaints about the screw coming loose during grinding. I have noticed this, but that was solved by having NotUsidore tighten it for me. Tightening the screw doesn’t adjust the grind setting on my grinder.
I bought the Hario Ceramic Coffee Grinder in October 2014, and I can confidently say it’s worth the investment.
Bodum Pour Over
When I got into pour over coffee I searched long and hard for the perfect pour over maker, and after a lot of research I settled on the Bodum Pour Over.
After much experimentation with my Hario, the best grind for making hot coffee in the Bodum, use a fine-medium grind with the filter in.
But in recent years, cold brew is my preferred drink.
To make cold brew with the Bodum, a medium-coarse grind works best. Too fine and the water doesn’t reach the grinds on the bottom, which causes a weak and watery brew. Too coarse and the flavour is weak due to under extraction.
For cold brew, I pour the grinds right in the bottom of the Bodum, and then filter for serving.
Coffee Gator French Press
I’ll never forget when Thermos came out with a French Press. I was so excited. I took it everywhere because if you have a Thermos french press and grinds, you can have awesome coffee at a gas station or truck stop.
The Coffee Gator French Press is even better as fewer grinds make it into the cup. It’s quite easy to clean. If you use it regularly, I suggest soaking the filter in white vinegar once a week to remove any build up of oils.
Coffee stays hot for about 2 hours, and as an added bonus, it has a handy canister for your grinds.
If you travel a lot, especially if you do a lot of road trips, this french press is a must-have.
Primula Portable Cold Brew Bottle
For cold brew on the go, I recommend the Primula Portable Cold Brew Bottle. It’s super easy to use, and travel friendly.
Add grinds and water before bed, and in the morning you just have to grab the bottle out of the fridge on your way out the door.
This filter requires a medium-course grind in my experience.
You can also use this for making hot coffee or hot tea. It comes with a sleeve so you can avoid burning yourself.
I’ve never had any problems with leaking due to the silicone gaskets inside the lids. That said though, make sure to remove the gasket at the bottom (under the filter basket) when you clean it. I didn’t for the first few weeks and my coffee started tasting weird.
It’s fairly easy to clean.
Stok Cold Brew Coffee
I am soooo not a morning person, and some mornings I’m incapable of making coffee before I’ve had coffee. I recently discovered Stok Cold Brew Coffee.
Yes, it’s cheating, but I like having a bottle in the fridge for the mornings I just simply can’t function, and I’m out of cold brew.
It’s a lot better than I expected. I was expecting it to be filled with all sorts of extra crap like most store bought cold brews, but that’s not the case. It’s coffee, and water. Each bottle is consistent. I mix with a little soy milk, though it’s perfectly fine without.
I’d love to hear about your favourite coffee tools. Share! Enlighten me!
I need my Gaggia automatic, good quality beans, water, electricity and a cup.
You know, I used to like you.
I went through all those coffee making gyrations in the ‘80s.
Well, some of us weren’t born in the ’80s.
Also, some of us aren’t part of the 1% living large off public employee pensions.
Boy, I wish that second sentence was true. But I certainly ain’t complainin’.
I guess if I had the money, that would be nice.
Dammit, now I’m pondering one of those for the office.
Hmm. That’s a great idea. Business break room equipment.
I look at how much I’m saving by making it myself, versus buying it at a shop. And my last one lasted 13 years and made 18,000 cups of coffee.
Yeah, I have a Mr. Coffee or something similar, and use the store-brand flavored coffee like hazelnut or vanilla. I’m too damn cheap (well, not particularly well-to-do either).
Up at our cabin, I use a Mr. Coffee that is at least 25 years old. Still makes good coffee.
That’s what I was thinking, too. At no less than $5 per cup at the coffee shop, an espresso machine would pay for itself in under a year.
I don’t want to give up the counter space. I have aero press, pour over, 2 French presses, vacuum brewer, cold brew and moka pot all in one cabinet, hidden away.
The spousal unit and I have been using a Saeco Vienna Plus since 2004. Press a button, beans are ground, coffee’s made. And you can get ’em off of Amazon for around $400.00 U.S. Our first one was something she acquired for my birthday using rewards points at the company where she worked. We’re on our second machine.
We, like Spudster, went through the coffee gyrations earlier in life. Automation is wonderful when it works, and in this case, it works.
For me, it was tasting pump brewed coffee in Italy and France. I was hooked.
I want one of those so badly.
Hipster.
God invented gas stations so you don’t need o make your own coffee.
No, God invented Keurig so you don’t need to stop at the gas station.
But what about my morning ritual of awkwardly and ineffectually chatting up the cute girl that takes my $1.39?
Cute girl at the gas station? Pics or it didn’t happen?
As others have opined here on these boards once you reach a certain age any girl under 30 is a cute girl. But this one really is 5’nothing straight black hair, skinny but not bony, no visible tats, beautiful smile, piercing blue eyes, has that look that says she would cut you in a heartbeat, cusses like a mason…oh to be twenty and free again.
She sounds cute.
We have a chain in our area Quick Trip. It’s a classy gas station. They pay well and have several attractive employees.
Ask her if she’d rather have the same small talk over your Keurig.
My husband actually loves his Keurig.
I have a sister who is middle of the road, politically but also kind of a greenie. So every now and then, I ask her how she deals with her guilt from throwing all those plastic Keurig pods?
It’s the little things in life.
Cheap K cups with an Adderall chaser is the breakfast of champions.
And keto that stuff up with some coconut oil and heavy whipping cream.
OK, what is the correct ratio of grounds to water for cold brew? I remember Jesse saying it, but he was referencing a particular piece of equipment.
My bad, it Was Florida Man. Still, it wasn’t generic.
I use a cool brew carafe so no need to measure. Fill the insert with coffee and the carafe with water. Coffee is very individualized, so you can play around and find what you like.
I’ve found it varies wildly based on individual preferences and the roast. For 32oz of cold brew I do anywhere from 1/2c to 3/4c of grinds.
Can’t I just have a coffee PICC line put in? I could hang a bag of Irish whiskey and mix it 50/50. Sure would make the days go by better. (For a while.)
Haven’t tried cold brew myself. I usually rely on my aeropress and 190 F water. Medium grind with the Oxo burr grinder.
Also, don’t forget to revisit Florida Man’s excellent series on coffee.
After drinking all that coffee this is the product you will need.
http://imgur.com/gallery/87wNjH1
Notice the awkward hand holding at the end.
That was supposed to be a post not a reply
So, are you saying Florida Man’s series is crap? Hmmmm?
What happened to your coffee this morning?
Oh, mornings are never good for me (since I’m typically up working until 0300-0400), but much less so for my poor MIL. She’s especially confused after she wakes. I think it was somewhere around 1100 before I got any caffeine at all.
Sorry
^ this comment is # 1 ^
Nope, it just results in crap
^ this comment is # 2 ^
Did she just give herself a dutch oven?
Yes. Yes she did.
Thanks SP. I need to do the blind coffee challenge to finish the series.
I’ve been rocking the AeroPress for about a year, but that pour-over looks interesting.
I tried a pour over, but I didn’t get consistent results. The Aeropress has been far more reliable.
And that video on Amazon shows why. Geez – pour in a circle, but not too much water! Then wait, pour some more, then wait…. GTFO.
Yeah, it does take more effort to maintain consistency with a pour over. I view it as a zen like activity.
I get that. I like to be intentional with somethings in life. I pour my beer in a pint glass, shave with a straight razor and roast my own coffee because I believe in taking time and enjoying the little things.
Yeah, what these two jokers said.
I haven’t tried the AeroPress yet.
Just get some good beans and an Aeropress.
Serious question: why have you tried to give it up?
I cut way back because I was having PVCs a bunch. PVC is premature ventricular contraction. Not dangerous but no fun either and can be scary.
I have coffee a few times a week.
Good reason
Yeah, throwing pvc’s would swear me off of coffee too.
“I have coffee a few times a week.”
It’s sort of weird. I was drinking coffee every morning and my wife never drank it. Now it’s like she drinks it every morning and I drink a cup in the morning 2-3 times a week.
Same here. I was drinking four cups of coffee every morning and for some reason, I now have two about three times a week.
I have a heart problem. Like Hayek, I get PVCs sometimes, in addition to some other (non fatal) cardiac issues. Won’t kill me, but it’s very physically exhausting. I have to consider my cardiac stuff and my desire to be alert when deciding to have caffeine every day.
Why do you want to give up something you love? Puritanism is bad. If something does not harm others, and does not harm yourself it cannot be wrong.
But… you’re having more fun than me!
Then I am sorry for you and wish you more happiness.
No.. Much better if you get less. That’s te way to even it out.
/BernieBro
Health issues. Specifically (non fatal) cardiac issues.
Drip maker and grinds, I’m trying to get it in my veins as quick and cheap as possible.
Back in my day we a Sanka and we liked it.
Back in my day we had lots of verbs.
You old
Verb raper!
Nobody needs 100 verbs to communicate.

Yes
Back when SNL was funny.
“I’d love to hear about your favourite coffee tools.”
Microwave to heat the milk before I add the cheapest instant coffee I can find.
Perfectly cromulent method for when the spousal unit and I are traveling.
Microwave? Milk? lookit Mr Moneybags over here. Boil water in a pan, toss in grounds, wait 3-5 minutes, pour off the coffee, get as much grit as you like.
Says the guy paying 1.39 for a cup. I would think the grounds are more expensive, but I’m not actually sure.
That’s for 24 oz. so that like what? 6 cups, also I’m paying for companionship.
Cold brewing pitcher that is no longer used bc I am buying pre-brewed cold coffee.
“Products You Need”
No one needs any products, especially more than one of them.
23 choices of deoderent and me.
23 is not enough for you.
I thought we agreed that you would change your handle.
You are still exaggerating.
Nah, he’s just wrong, again. But I totally support everyone’s right to be wrong.
I agree with Hyp’ on this.
Thanks, MikeS, you are awesome, in your own weird way. I mean like the rest of us.
Nope, he’s just wrong again, but I totally support the right of everyone to be wrong, again.
Why are you telling yourself to change your handle?
I’m glad I’m not the only one suffering with this. Despite them being quite different personality wise.
I get you and lackawsky mixed up.
WE all get you and Brett L confused as well.
Brett and I are practically twins, except we’re both the evil twin.
This is true.
I also sometimes mix-up Rufus and Trashy. I mean, all Muppets look alike, amirite?!
False! You are all Tulpa.
I’ll give you the best way to tell Rufus and I apart. I have a penis and testicles, a glorious, well shaped penis and large, pendulous testicles. Rufus is a eunuch. It’s just smooth foam down there for him.
Don’t believe me? Click my link in my username.
That kind of makes sense. We’re both relatively young with families and phonetically the start of our names are similar. We both like tool and work in heavy industry/construction.
Whereas hyperbole is a contrarian builder and Hyperion has a hot Brazilian wife.
Hyperion has a hot Brazilian wife.
YEAH HE DOES!
Ha! as if Hyperoni has a personality.
I can think of a few products I need. Like, if I could get P-mags in 6.8 SPC that would be great. They never seem to be in stock when I look for them.
Who needs hot wax when you have hot coffee? Kinky.
I dunno. My wife told me to find a place here they do Brazilian Wax. Fuck I don’t even know what that means. Well, I sort of do, I mean razors are a lot of work. I just don’t see a problem that needs solved. / American
you should get a Brazilian wax – it really changes things for the better.
And it’ll take five seconds off your lap time in the pool!

Random AF. Thank you.
I was disappointed to find that it Boss Coffee, and not Coffee Boss.
ha, seems like a real-life instance of this.
Marcus Welby drank Sanka, and that’s how you know it was safe.
Coffee make me nervous…
Jim Henson > Don Draper imo
The gents over at Black Rifle are subtle about their coffee.
I’ve seen that before. Just awesome.
#metoo and it never stops being hilarious.
Lol
Never gets old.
They have a lot of good videos. The background on the giant black dude (Crispy) is excellent,
Found it
I saw a still shot of Max Best running the 1919-A4 from the standing. I would like to see a video of that – I have one of those and would like to see how he maintains a stable stance with that machine.
Wait. You have one of those?!? That’s awesome!
Here’s a video.
He’s a pretty interesting dude. And big.
Yeah, registered full auto 30 caliber Browning MG.
It weighs about 30 lbs – but holding it up isn’t the challenge. When you fire it about half that weight is bouncing back and forth inside which makes it difficult to keep on target.
Vehicle mount ftw.
Can I come over?
Yeah, when I lived in the US I had a ’71 Ford F-150. And, yeah, I made a pintle mount for the 1919 in the bed.
*cue Olivia Newton_John*
“Let’s get…technical!”
Seconded.
course grind on a capresso burr grinder and bodum SS French press. I have other tools, but that is my go to.
He doesn’t talk about my coffee that way…
Every year the Splosives household makes a few targeted donations. Usually to non profits for tax purposes, but right now I feel like coming to the rescue to some orgs doing the right things who might be under nefarious pressure to shut up and go away.
So this year’s winners are:
Rand Paul, Justin Amash, and Thomas Massie re-election campaigns.
Glibertarians
Babylon Bee
And one charity: Lutheran Bible Translators Andrew and Alexis Olson, who are in Africa translating the Bible into dozens of tribal languages that have no Bible translation yet. Andrew is an amazing young man who has a true gift for learning languages. He went to Uganda as a teen and learned local tribal languages in just a few weeks. No linguistic training at all. Just a gift. Now he’s married and back in Africa to carry on.
https://lbt.org/project/rev-andrew-alexis-olson/
Oh, and we know them personally since he was worship leader at my Minnesota church for a couple of years.
He walks the walk.
Amash is done, I don’t see him coming close to being re-elected. I know he is standing on principle, but I wish he would have kept quiet about impeaching Trump so he could go on to more important fights. Now he might be replaced with a Democrat.
Amash lost me entirely. He made it very clear that he was focused on being contrarian rather than principled. Calling for Trump’s impeachment on libertarian “he exceeded his authority” grounds would be fine. Calling for it based on the Mueller report? Screw you. I wish Amash ill now.
Well, maybe I’ll rethink that one then. He pretty much doomed himself by changing party affiliation to Independent.
Now there will be a GOP primary and he will split the non-lefty vote with the Elephant, thus turning the seat D.
I’m crushing it this week.
What was the astrology prediction for cancer this week?
Ass. It calls for ass cancer.
Cancer is in Uranus.

“I’d love to hear about your favourite coffee tools. Share! Enlighten me!”
Well, let’s see. I have a pyrex quart measuring cup I bought at yard sale. I think it’s from the 50’s. I have a Flint stainless steel strainer. I have a stainless steel tea kettle. I think I bought it at a K-mart? Walmart? Whatever, it around 25 years ago. I heat up water on the stove. Then I pour it through ground coffee in a paper filter in the strainer perched on the measuring cup.
Last night I broke the seal on a Ron Paul decanter
That looks like Mises
I soaked the label off a Rothbard Jelly Bean jar.
+6 Haiku
I don’t got coffee tools, but seeing the ones here, I’m getting quite a few ideas.
Starbucks French Roast (I buy on base so the price isn’t so bad) ground in a Mr. Coffee auto grinder.
Then I make the coffee in a Breville Café-Roma machine – I guess you’d call it an Italian pump? – same machine for about 16 years now. Basically an Americano.
I can’t stand milk/cream in coffee – I don’t mind the flavors separate but don’t like them together. Mixed, they are about the same as beer in milk to me.
I’d spent more than 6 years making cappuccinos with a Breville machine. But it took a lot of time to make a cup. So a year and a half ago I switched to this Jura. Now I just press a button.
Pussy.
Better Jura: http://www.melandrose.com/istar.asp?a=65&image=/istarimages/mp/91759-12127.jpg
Booze. Coffee needs booze. Preferably Bailey’s.
Mmmm. Booze. Bailey’s now has a vegan version that I’m eyeing. Irish cream is one of the things I struggled to give up when going vegan.
I don’t know if I could give up Irish cream.
Wifey turned me on to the wonders of the French Press, so now it’s a Planetary Design press with 8 O’Clock coffee. For my taste, 20oz. press takes 5 tablespoons of coffee and 5 teaspoons of sugar. I nurse one of those on my overnight shifts.
I’m unfamiliar with that brand. Thanks!
Aeropress. Love it. I’ve had many other machines, presses, etc, but this is my fave. I only have one cup a day now, so breiwng a pot is irrelevant.
Usually Caribou espresso with heavy cream.
I really need to try AeroPress.
The best $30 I’ve ever spent.
Thanks for the heads up on the grinder!
I used to grind but I don’t bother any more. Pre-ground Lavazza espresso (or anything dark and finely ground) works great with the AeroPress for me.
I’m a fan of illy’s.
Hell yeah.
Bit pricey, though. 🙁
It helps I’m the only one who drinks coffee in my house.
#metoo and I only drink 1 cup a day. I suppose I can afford it, but it still gives me sticker shock when I look at all the other brands on the shelf.
“”Prove it. Prove that you are not controlled by the NRA,” says Parkland shooting survivor @davidhogg111. “When you go back and forth and you get caught up in these debates, that shows how you think politics is a game, but when people think politics is a game, people die.””
https://twitter.com/CNN/status/1164348854625591296
NRA mind-control rays. Alex Jones is canceled, but this asshole is still on TV.
How is “Protecting your rights I swore an oath to uphold” reduced to “controlled by the NRA”?
I love how the NRA is portrayed as this political gorilla – almost like a John Wick level boogie-man – imbued with supernatural powers. As weak and wishy-washy as they are for my interests I still think they are worth the money spent decades ago to become a life member.
The first John Wick was great. Both sequels are crap.
I liked the second, but not the third.
And they all talk as if the NRA is donating a billion dollars to each GOP candidate, but when you look at the actual numbers, it’s small change. Like, if that’s all you need to buy a politician, please do tell me what the hundred thousand from Planned Parenthood, unions, Bloomberg’s various astroturf orgs, etc, are buying?
This^^ The only thing the NRA brings is large numbers of fervid single-issue voters.
Yeah, I suppose it is understood that when the NRA mentions that they have 5 million members on the rolls there are probably several times that who will vote in line with their recommendations. Maybe not a lot in a nation of 300 million but when you look at how few people actually vote that is a significant number. That is where their power is.
Prove a negative. Well that’s easy.
I don’t know that I would ever have bought Keurig machine, but it came with the house and it’s darned convenient.
We’ve been the recipients of three Keurigs throughout the course of our marriage. I don’t use it, but my husband (NotUsidore) loves it. He enjoys when I geek out about good coffee, but left to his own devices he’d rather get his coffee as quick as possible.
I use them at Holiday Inn Express or Hilton Garden Inn, but they need about 4-8 cycles of clean tap water to remove the coffee sediment. I like being able to pop in a hot chocolate, tea, or my own coffee but I’d never buy one for home. They just don’t get the coffee right like my drip filter.
“Cannibalism is Common in the Animal Kingdom – Here’s Why for Humans it’s the Ultimate Taboo
We suspect that we could adapt to human flesh if need be. Many people develop disgust for all kinds of meat, while morticians and surgeons quickly adapt to the initially difficult experience of handling dead bodies. Our ongoing research with butchers in England suggests that they easily adapt to working with animal parts that the average consumer finds quite disgusting.
Thankfully for most of us, there is no need to overcome our repulsion for the foreseeable future. Some philosophers have argued that burying the dead could be wasteful in the context of the fight against world hunger—but there are much more palatable alternatives on the table than a haunch of human. We can shift to eating more plants and less meat to conserve resources lost by feeding plants directly to livestock. Insects can meet our protein needs, and there is the prospect of cultured meat technology.”

Progressive.
Anybody who’s watched The Book of Eli knows the answer to why we don’t do cannibalism.
“More poor people are eating meat around the world. That means they will live longer, healthier lives, but it is bad news for the environment”

“… Insects can meet our protein needs,”
Maybe insects can meet YOUR protein needs. I’ll have the steak.
Even on Papua New Guinea, where large fauna are rare and protein sources are valued so much that tribes murder each other for the rights to hunt in their habitat, people only eat bugs as last resort.
+1 cassowary stew
That’s anti-Semitic
Old glass french press, water, pan and bottom shelf coffee. Then a 4 and 4 and a sausage muffin through the McD’s drive through for the drive to work. I might look into the bean grinder contraption because, why not. Thanks Webdom.
I’ve found that the grinder can make a big difference even with generic store brand coffee.
I like good coffee, but I don’t like the sweaty, sticky palms and the ADD that comes with it. As such, it’s a “break glass in case of emergency” pick me up for when I’m falling asleep at my desk.
I’ve done the gyrations for making coffee, but I drink way to much to spend that much time on it. 4-5 mugs every morning and 2 or 3 in the afternoon.
We had a guy in the office who imported beans that he roasted himself; he started coffee club at work and asked for $10 to support his hobby.
I punished him for thinking he could make money that way.
I burn thru Costco sized boxes of K-cups ever couple weeks.
My sister’s boyfriend says I should go into business roasting coffee because he liked mine so much. Going from small batch to commercial is not even in the same league and collecting money and selling sound like a nightmare.
How much does your sister’s boyfriend make a month online? Enuogh to by a BMW?
He could say, but he needs to move some money around and if I give him my account number he can put some money in there for me.
Yeah, I’ve had people tell me I should open a Mexican restaurant when they’ve eaten my Carnitas. The difference between making dinner for 8 vs dinner for 80 vs lunch & dinner for 800 (where the profit starts to make it worthwhile) are completely different things.
No thanx
I’ll come over for dinner and provide the after dinner coffee. ?
Ha! It might be a bit out of your way.
One time I was in Army MOS school soldiers in my class were passing around a slow cooker and making lunch for the class. I made about 8 lbs of Carnitas – two guys in the class Both of whom had emigrated to the US from Mexico as teens) asked if they could take some left-overs home (they happened to live in the area) to show their wives.
Recipe?
I love that Amazon has “recurring delivery” turned on for this espresso machine. https://amzn.to/31PRo3o
Hot coffee, black. I don’t have time to fool around in the morning, I need my fix fast. I have the M. Coffee ready to go at night, wake up, immediately through the switch, take care of a personal chore of short duration, coffee’s ready and so am I. About a 20 ouncer at 0530, another at 0930 and the last one in mid afternoon. Quality is important but time is more important. Caffeine is a helluva drug…
My old man had an almost identical routine. He had a cast iron coffee pot which he never washed. “Adds flavor” he’d say. He wasn’t wrong.
With a K-cup, the next mug is always fresh, which, to me, is the most important thing.
Oh… And good tasting water.
GOTS to have good water.
Old standby Cuisinart drip coffee maker with beans we grind the night before, locally roasted by our buddy Joel at Mysterium Coffee. I am convinced that the timer on a coffee maker is the greatest invention ever devised by humankind.
Mr. GT inherited – but we do not use – his mom’s old stovetop percolator. It’s name is “Killer.”
(S/B “Its,” dammit.)
I stand corrected about the coffee maker as well: it was a dripolator. According to one of Mr. GT’s friends, its last cup was as good as anyone’s benzedrine.
Heh I actually bought a percolator a dozen or so years ago; I guess because I “heard things”.
Worst cup of coffee I’ve ever made.
Percolator? That sounds like a move STEVE SMITH uses.
Not the neighbors dog talking to you, I hope?
Damn it Harvey get back in the house and stop recommending coffee enhancers to the neighbors.
That’s ruff.
I drank a lot of percolator coffee in my younger days when camping. But that was when you picked which canned, ground coffee you liked best. We were a Folger’s family.
Ancient Cuisinart Mill & Drip maker with a 12-cup insulated carafe. The cone-type burr grinder gave up a while back and apparently, the sucker isn’t repairable. Being cheap, I went out and bought a refurbished grinder ’cause the rest of the pot works fine. Nicaraguan beans from Costco.
Do we have an opinion on this mess yet?
https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2019/08/22/patrick-byrne-ceo-of-overstock-corp-resigns-and-admits-to-participating-in-fbi-political-surveillance/
Story is about Overstock CEO claiming that Peter struck had him spying on presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio …..
By opinion do you mean over/under on how much longer he’ll be alive?
I sure don’t. Good Lord, if it’s true. The $1 Billion dollar bribe sounds like utter BS, though.
That was one of my thoughts. How could you even possibly pay that? You can’t move that kind of money.
The only way there could even potentially be something like that is if you are talking about government contracts
I can’t even begin to make head or tails of that.
Do I think our government is up to shady stuff? Yes. Do I think Byrne is telling the truth? No. A $1 Billion bribe? Come on keep it realistic.
So here is my newly-minted Theory
He is about to go down. The SEC or some other government agency has something on him and he knows it. So this is his method of getting out in front of it.
In other words, another McAfee.
Is he a Hillary supporter?
The weird thing is that Byrne had no reason whatsoever to do this. Overstock was rocking, he’s proven himself to be a damned good dude, and then he comes out with this story. One of two things, he’s had a complete mental breakdown, or he’s telling the truth.
Here are my coffee making tools.
Mmmmm.
That dude has balls on his chin.
Got that exact one at work.
I think that’s the same one I have, which broke. I started to try to take it apart, but it seemed it would become quite a project.
G-d dammit we are brothers. Rock on my K cup home. ?
I don’t drink coffee, so couldn’t care less about coffee makers. But this posting is a lot more fun to read than those Megan McArdle posts that would go on and on about some new
kitchen gadget (or how passionate Peter Sudeman is).
My well-used keurig broke, so now I just use a gaggia classic .. grind starbucks french roast or verona as needed .. good to go.
Anyone here ever try Kopi Luwak? I don’t drink coffee so I have no desire regardless of the bat poop.
I have. It is nothing special. At all. If someone does not tell you what you are drinking you would not know. I had it in a tasting of like 8 coffees and it came ion 4th alrhough it was bu far the most expensive. Also it is cat poop not bat poop
“Also it is cat poop not bat poop”
autocorrect is a hell of a drug.
Drinking this right now. From the website, it appears that I am approximately 25 years older than the target market. And I am not (solely) using it as a vehicle for intoxication.
But, it is good. It’s too sweet to drink neat for too long, but I’m really digging the peanut butter taste.
Hit send too soon.
I think it would be good (maybe great) in coffee. Especially if you had some kind of chocolate blend.
Peanut butter whiskey? Huh. I’m intrigued.
Hard pass.
Check out their PB&J Old Fashioned recipe. It’s intriguing.
I’ve never tried that, but I have tried bacon flavored bourbon, which was a decent novelty (and supposedly is a good mixer) but you don’t want to drink very much.
I have bottle of “Uncle Bob’s Root Beer Flavored Whiskey” sitting on my bar. I bought it just for the name, but it is surprisingly better than I’d thought it be. One glass with ice goes pretty far though.
Yeah, I’m thinking this will be in my liquor cabinet for a couple years or more. Just hanging out, waiting for the right company to stop by, or the right mood to strike.
no thank you.
I have a keurig at home that my wife uses every morning and I use if I’m in a hurry. I have a Keurig at work that is in my office. The office model is what they called their industrial model. Over 7 years without an issue other than the occasional blockage of the needles that can be prevented with cleaning.
I use an Areo press on weekends when I have time to spare.
Holy smokes. ‘The Predator’ is a terrible piece of shit. Shane Black should have made this an Alan Smother movie.
So much wasted acting talent. Such a waste of a rich backstory.
‘Smithee’. Not Smother.
On a barely related note: why is Breaking Away never on cable?
That is a fantastic sports movie and it’s never, ever on.
It’s worth watching for the AMF bikes.
I’ve tried many times over the years to give up coffee – why? It’s generally good for you.
When I make coffee at home, which is usually in winter, I use a Porlex Tall Hand Coffee Grinder and a moka pot. But I have this hipster roastery / coffee place 7 minutes walk from me and this higher end chain – local affair like 10 locations, better than shit like Starbucks but worse then the hipster place – 3 minutes walk for me so most often I just go buy from them.
Today being a work from home day, I will go to the chain because they open at 7 while the hipsters open at 8, but in the weekend I go to the hipsters.
On non work from home days we have free coffee at the office, mediocre but good enough for a work day.
Good morning glibs
Good morning, Pie.

Closest I found to Melita’s filter holder before they went and fucked it all to hell.
That’s my backup, and my go-to before I went AeroPress last year. Best $3 coffee maker in my collection.
How is it fucked now?
Used to be a solid cone directly on top of the mug New ones are open around the base of the cone. Unstable and lets the coffee cool too quickly.
Can’t sleep? On the stupid west coast which is certainly not the best coast even though it is but it isn’t because I’m not there*? It’s time to watch our favorite music videos, young and old.
I will start with one that will keep you awake for hours.

Best drum line ever.
The Fuzz, man.
Spoiler — Last Star Trek movie was pedestrian, but the music choice was pretty good…
You should watch the truly excellent Amazon show Patriot – season one is incredible, and one episode features “Root Down.”
Sure Shot is the season 2 theme song.
Perpetual Grace Ltd. on Epix has many of the same actors and much of the same “feel”. If you liked Patriot, you’ll like that.
Steve Conrad did both shows.
Thank you. I love Patriot and I will surely explore this show.
Undiscovered Country wasn’t that bad.
Not that bad, not that great. To differ from the original cast, they make their odd number movies better than the even numbers.

I don’t know how you make coffee but I’m interested.
meh… weird shape boobs
I use a Keurig. It’s fast, easy, and makes a decent cup of coffee.
My wife has gotten into something fancy that involves her grinding beans every morning. I hate that fucking, electric grinder. It sounds like someone started a lawnmower in the house. I can live with it when I’m up for work. When she does it on the weekend I want to punch the wall.
Who do they think they are fooling?

The unasked question is why does it matter to SF’s government unless they’re committing a new crime? If they’ve done their time, they’ve done their time.
Did Twitchy just get taken in by a Babylon Bee article? This sounds too crazy even for them.
I’m late again, but I’ll play, boiled water over a rounded tablespoon of Nescafe classic dark roast instant coffee, in a large mug. Thick and creamy, very strong, yum…
I couldn’t resist. I ordered the grinder; thanks Webdom.
I had a LavAzza Matinee espresso machine for my old Craft Services gig. It is a fantastic machine. The pods come in 2 packs and work out to about $0.45 per cup.
the only issue being the taste
I really liked it but YMMV. Do you not care for espresso at all or just dislike the LaVazza brand?
I dislike all large coffee brands as I like lighter roasted Ethiopian coffees. Lavazza for me is generic crap. I drink it on occasion when I have no alternative.
But most commercial coffees are roasted to much, generally lack flavor and usually you get them way to long after roasting
