O Henry was born on this day, if you’re into boring writing. (Aside: the Oh Henry is a pretty decent candy bar, even if its not all that prevalent.). So were: (better) writer D.H. Lawrence, football coaching legend Paul “Bear” Bryant, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, football coaching almost-legend Tom Landry, filmmaker Brian DePalma, drummer Mickey Hart, actress Virginia Madsen, Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad, crooner Harry Connick Jr, and rapper Ludacris.
The Astros got poleaxed last night. I guess they were gonna eventually work their way back to the mean, but shit. The Yankees lost as well, to the Tigers, so no harm there. The Dodgers won and clinched their division. Other winners were: the Phillies, Blue Jays, Mets, Brewers, Twinks, Rays, White Sox, Rockies, Giants, Padres, Indians, and Mariners.
France pounded Andorra, England played like ass but beat Kosovo, and Iceland got drilled, among other results in Euro 2020 qualifying. Not much else happened in the sporting world yesterday. I mean, its a Tuesday. What did you expect?
OK, now we get to find out what’s happening in the world as we get to…the links!
The NRA are suing San Francisco after the city’s government branded it a domestic terrorist organization. If they win, San Francisco government can blame them for taking the money out of the budget for cleaning junkie needles and human shit off the streets. Hell, they can probably do it anyway and get away with it. Its not like the people there ever hold them accountable for, you know, failing to clean the literal piles of human shit that are everywhere.
The GOP swept a pair of special elections for congressional seats in North Carolina. One of them was not ever considered to be in danger, but the other was. And it appears that they won it by a larger margin than the last time, an election brought with accusations of ballot harvesting by the Republicans.
Obama was a hell of a salesman for the gun industry. It looks like the current crop of Dem candidates are trying to outdo him. I sure wish people would calm down and stop all this panic-buying. Its driving the prices up, and I want to go buy a new gun, dammit!
Damn, dude, take it easy with that shit. Sorry, this just seems barbaric and backward. Next thing, you’re gonna tell me these people treat women like second-class citiz….oh, never mind.
An Arizona state trooper has been arrested. And immediately fired. And the state police are trying to find more victims of his. Hey, Chicago (and may other places): take some notes, huh? This is what’s supposed to happen to a bad cop.
The WH is floating plans to get the homeless in California off the streets. I mean, since the state has utterly failed to do so, I’m not surprised the feds are looking into doing something (since that’s what busybody governments do). But I’m not so sure the optics are gonna be right when the media start saying “Trump to throw homeless in government camps”. Better to just let the state government sleep in the mess they made. And by mess, I mean the piles of junkie needles and human shit.
It seems as if the British establishment is going to do everything it can to undermine democracy. Now the court is saying Parliament can’t be suspended, even though all of the proper steps have been taken. Oh well, they’re disarmed and certain types of speech are already illegal. Its not as if the people can do much about it anymore.
Here you go. Enjoy it.
Say a prayer for those lost on 9/11 so many years ago. And pray it never happens again. Then go have a great day, friends

…and Romania beat Malta.

You do now!

There is a USA France FIBA game right now… that is one thrift store US team
Yeah, 3rd stringers.

Well….they are special. Precious works too.

But am I shaking it at the typo or the fact that the typo seems to be what was zeroed in on?
wow you do not remember why you are shaking your fist?
Alzheimer’s is a bitch.
Are you new here?
My bet is palsy.
FWIW: I thought it was an intentional typo – close enough to possibly be a mistake but actually on purpose to convey some other connotations like those explained above. Good Job!
A John-o?
I’ll avoid zeroing in on the typo, and I’ll kamikaze the article.
The overall number of background checks recorded in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System surged 15.5%

The NRA calls the terrorist designation a “frivolous insult” — but it adds that the lawmakers’ actions also “pose a nonfrivolous constitutional threat.” The group says San Francisco is violating U.S. laws that protect free speech and association.
Kindof a moot point unless you include the recent prohibitions on Chickfila opening in a few locations and cake bakers (which I think is still being targeted by the local/state gov’t??). And I am sure there are other examples.
Damn, dude, take it easy with that shit. Sorry, this just seems barbaric and backward. Next thing, you’re gonna tell me these people treat women like second-class citiz….oh, never mind. – I though scourging was a catholic thing.
Straight up, no shit cannibalism has a tendency to evolve step by step into symbolism. In Catholicism the communion host is a relic of a much more uncivilized time, no doubt pre-dating Christianity.
Yeah, forget that Last Supper thing….
Sir, please step away from the theological analysis.
Yeah, this one is a head-scratcher. The beginnings of communion are literally traced to the last supper.
I think Sam Kinison’s interpretation was the best.
I think you can say the Last Supper predates Christianity, which would arguably have its origin at (take your pick:
1. The Crucifixion
2. The Resurrection
3. The Ascension
or if you are talking about Catholicism specifically, you may not be able to make this argument as Matthew 16:18 is pre Last Supper, although I would argue that prior to the Crucifixion Jesus would have been acting as Messiah and therefore in the Jewish tradition, and not until the sacrifice that fulfilled the law was complete could the new Christian tradition commence.
which would arguably have its origin at (take your pick:
1. The Crucifixion
2. The Resurrection
3. The Ascension
I’d add the virgin birth (even back to the conceptio), the baptism of Jesus, and the beginning of His ministry to the lists as possible beginnings.
Pentecost gets my vote.
Those are are all arguable positions, but I really do think that the voluntary sacrifice fulfilling the old testament law is the point at which Christianity diverges from Judaism.
Disclaimer: I am a respectful agnostic, not a believer, and I was raised by a Pentecostal/Evangelical Mother and a Jeffersonian Deist Jewish Father so my Theology may be unorthodox, but logically you can’t really start the new religion based in the old religion until the event that the new religion’s believers say closed out the old religion’s authority has occurred. And Christ’s voluntarily taking on the sins of the world and dying on the cross is that event.
Matthew 27:51 (NIV)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split
There is your moment.
Catholics literally and explicitly hold that the beginning of Christianity is the enactment of the New Covenant, which occurred at the death of the testator (aka Christ). Where I to have an opinion on this, it would probably align with that.
STEVE SMITH NO PRE-DATE. GO RIGHT FOR THE HOST.
Do what now?
If you’re talking about humanity in general and the prevalence of symbolic cannibalism (and ritual cannibalism in some societies) I think you’ve got a point. The point of the Last Supper is that Christ is offering pieces of himself to be taken in by his followers so that by literally internalizing part of his nature they become a part of him, and he a part of them. That’s something you see in a lot of other cultures, too, although in different contexts.
I believe it’s much simpler than that. He’s basically telling them that he’s going away and to remember him when their eating and drinking.
Those fuckers with their knives. If I believed that god was that fucked up, wanting me to cut up tiny children, I would rebel and be as devilish as I could. What a fucked up place these people live in.
And people criticized Dungeons and Dragons for including evil deities, saying no one would worship a deity known for evil.

Progjection.

The only time progressives admit there is voter fraud is when the other side doesn’t let them steal an election.
I was assured over at TOS that election fraud is a fantasy.
no no, election fraud by democrats is a fantasy. Fraud by voter suppression/voter roll purges/ID requirements/robocalls by republicans is well and exhaustivly document by such civil rights organizations as the ACLU the SPLC, and the Niskainen Center.

Two things: nothing would have happened if he was white. And if women don’t want to be sexually assaulted they should not be driving.
Nowadays, when someone says” sexual assault,” I have no idea what they might mean. He might have just asked her out. Or, he might have raped her, impossible to tell, anymore.

We’ve been past that for awhile now.

Obligatory.

He said eat with your hands, not talk with them.
Bro, don’t you know dirty Italians eat with their hands. That’s why they eat dinner with the curtains closed. (this is a real-life ethnic stereotype)
The French eat entire chickens with their hands, the way you’re supposed to.
That Robert Downey Jr. eyeroll GIF is going to wear itself out these days.
Ozymandias, thanks for your articles. If my kids think of signing up for the military these articles will be brought up. I would like to think your articles (if read) would convince a lot of people to stay out.
Seconded. I’m glad the truth about those drugs they gave us is coming to light. Most of us buried them in the sand when we landed, but not before being forced to take them on ship.
As I wrote in that thread, the military was worried about the wrong thing. I came back home completely unable to run long distance because of all the oil smoke I had breathed and I was not the only only one. The Corps treated me like a shit-bird for the rest of my enlistment and the VA was clueless.
I hear you. I’ve had serious heart trouble since; couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs without my heart trying to beat itself out of my chest at the ripe age of 24. Detoxing helped/helps, and I have to watch my intake of caffeine & alcohol.
That PB stuff is basically a poison antidote. Not meant for regular use. I figured that out after a few days of feeling weird and stopped taking it.
Yes – Thanks and sorry I missed it last night. I went through all that shit in 90-91.
After we got all our mystery shots per-deployment, they gave everyone a giant penicillin shot in the ass. Except for me because they thought I was allergic (I’m not really, just had it over-prescribed as a child). As a result, I was seriously ill for a week.
That sucks, Drake. To be a mere cog in the machine must make it even more frustrating. Fuck those cuntes!
As Lance Corporal Radio Operator in the Infantry, I didn’t have a lot of delusions about my place in the green machine.
Yup. Anybody seen talking on a radio handset is immediately the main target – for anything you can shoot or launch – in a group. It doesn’t what his rank is, the equipment he is bringing to bear on the situation is probably (if you’re some local insurgent) more hardware than your side has in the immediate 15 grid squares.
Watch for the guy next to the radio operator, he’s the man in command.
“Hey, Jones, I’ll carry the radio for awhile, you look tired”
“Thanks, Lt, that damned thing gets heavy”
Sap! “Medic, medic, Jones is down”
Chips (et al) – I thank and salute you all for your service; I’m really sorry that you guys were experimented upon. For what it’s worth, what I learned when the military decided to start that nonsense again was a watershed event in my life. And Drake, I made some comments on yours in that thread. (Sorry for not being around but we had a minor medical issue last night that required me to be out at the urgent care until late.)\\
I hope you guys will ‘stick around’ to the end because I think there is some “good news” in that story… it just doesn’t happen for a while.
To be clear I wasn’t in the military.
Hope everyone is good.
Ah, got it. I kind of glommed all of the comments together. My bad.
Thank you for your comments, regardless. I don’t know that “stay away” should be the takeaway, although I suppose that’s as valid as anything. I was kinda hoping for “Let’s not experiment on our own citizens anymore” would be more of the sentiment. 😉
That should be obvious without a bunch of nut punches but I suppose it’s not.
I’ve added it to the more evidence to “stay away” or “be cautious” bin.
I see it as signing on the line with the military puts you in a very precarious position. You lose a lot of autonomy when you do that. We live near a base and see people / families come and go, dads (mostly) that are gone for long periods of time and getting jerked around with changing orders with new commanders (or existing ones).
With a corporate job that jerks you around or sends you off for extended trips you have a easier out, not so with the armed forces.
The new surge came in the wake of heightened pressure for gun control, sales bans on military-styled rifles, and limits on ammo following a spike in mass shootings.
A meaningless term in the context of 2A, considering the entire point of 2A. Someone needs to give gun-grabbers a reality check. There have been repeating projectile arms since javelin throwing skirmishers was a thing. That, bow/arrow, crossbows and muskets are all military weapons used in warfare for thousands of years. It’s almost like weapons are weapons and the “military” modifier means absolute dick.
Gun people should pool money together and buy a big ship with a bunch of big cannons because that existed in the time of the constitution
A friend’s grandfather (and very crazy old WWII Marine) owned a fully functional replica of a Revolutionary War cannon. Used to blast that thing off in mock battles and in the town-square at the end of the Memorial Day parade. He also used to shoot it for real at targets in a quarry. He used half-gallon milk jugs filled with concrete for cannonballs.
I fully support the ban on military styling on firearms. Flat Dark Earth and Coyote Brown are hideous colors.
I have an AR with FDE stock, charging handle, & scope mount. I find it to be quite tasteful – that’s partly due to the custom fluted barrel & cerakote finish on the handguards & barrel. Though I’m not a fan of FDE pistols.
Until they can make two different components match, I’m sure that anyone actually knows what color FDE actually is.
Actually.
I’m generally an old-school kind of guy (people tell me I was born in wrong time period) but I do find something appealing about a Glock 20 with a FDE frame and a black slide.
Opinion: As President, I would issue a robot tax for corporations displacing humans, and create a federal agency to oversee automation.
By: Bill de Blasio
To start, my plan calls for a new federal agency, the Federal Automation and Worker Protection Agency (FAWPA), to oversee automation and safeguard jobs and communities.
*Snip*
Lastly, my proposal would institute a “robot tax” on large companies that eliminate jobs through increased automation and fail to provide adequate replacement jobs. They’d be required to pay five years of payroll taxes up front for each employee eliminated. That revenue would go right into a new generation of labor-intensive, high-employment infrastructure projects and new jobs in areas such as health care and green energy that would provide new employment. Displaced workers would be guaranteed new jobs created in these fields at comparable salaries.
Sometimes, we can be too productive.
right there is all he wants. The rest is blah, blah, blah

This video is also relevant. Although it is over broad (IMO), it isn’t incorrect in that automation is a huge part of our living standard.
He needs the cash. Right now, he is going whole hog on speed cameras. The city speed limit has been reduced from 40MPH to 25MPH and there are speed cameras popping up all over Brooklyn and Queens. I got 3 tickets in one day last week. The dirty trick is if you contest the ticket, it will get dismissed (I’m told because one can not confront one’s accuser) but most folk just send in the $50 fine. I hate NY!
That’s nuts. What about big streets like Ocean Parkway? 4th Avenue in Brooklyn? Northern Blvd?
The original plan was to only implement the 25MPH limit on all city streets that did not have speed signage (under city code, those default to 40MPH). Then, HEY PRESTO!, new 25MPH LIMIT, CAMERA ENFORCED signs started replacing all the 30, 35, and 40 signs. Some Parkways are still 40 and some neighborhoods (with large concentrations of city employees) managed to keep their 35MPH limits. Many other streets have been subject to traffic calming measures: travel lanes reduced by the installation of wide concrete medians, lanes painted red and restricted to city buses, lanes painted green and restricted to pedal bikes. It’s madness, I say, madness!
$50 is easier to pay than messing around contesting. Even the government will find the right price point sometimes.
From 30 to 25.
On my nightly commute there is a stretch of highway that just got repaved and the construction zone would move from day to day. Those cops must have made a killing because every trip to work they had some schlub pulled over and the same for the return trip. This went on for a month and a half.
We have the bonus of an eternal pissing match between CityGov and StateGov so every few months the streets by us are full of NY State Police doing local traffic enforcement to take revenue away from the City and to show NYPD who is boss.
I love how the article mentions how bloody nice it is for school-zone speeders to get violations without mentioning the rather pertinent fact that the city does not turn the cameras off outside of posted school-zone hours so one will still get a violation on weekends, nights, holidays, etc..
Dafuq? You guys only pay 50 bucks for speeding? I just paid 500 last year for my first ticket in over a decade.
That’s just for the automated camera tickets; an effort to find the price point where folk will just pay it rather than fighting it. A ticket given out by a cop is significantly more expensive.
I’ve often wondered why stories about ticket cameras being defaced with paintball guns or similar aren’t more common.
I’m curious if the CCD within could be burned out with a LASER?
Yep. Photojournalists are having real problems with precisely that in Hong Kong these days.
Of course he would need a constitutional amendment, since the constitution does not authorize a robot tax.
Buggy whips MUST come back!
Yes, can’t have the Federal Government doing anything not specifically authorized by the Constitution. No way the Supreme Court would let that stand. Nope.
Increased efficiency provided by robots lowers cost to the consumer. Why does de Blasio hate the lower and middle class?
Because he has got his. The proles be damned.
Has DeBlasio come up with a single idea that was not the worst possible?
He has not started talking about the camps he pines for…
Yet.
Give him time, he needs to concentrate on the idea first.
Just the sort of job most people are looking for. Thanks Bill!
Outlaw road construction equipment! Artisan pick-and-shovel built roads for the Road God!
Wow, look at this guy and his labor saving shovels. They should use spoons.
And of course, small-batch sustainably sourced asphalt.
asphalt?! We’ll be lucky to get ruts in the dirt. We can drive on these two-tracks with our solar powered 4X4s.
The asphalt-stirrer’s union will ensure that their membership continues to
have jobsget paid.So another pampered prince who has never had to work the rest of the day after a blister tears open is fantasizing about the joy of physical labor out of doors? We spend 10,000 years dragging our way from life as starving monkeys to being able to survive, and even thrive in comfort and ease and Team D wants to end tool building.
Of course the unasked and unanswered question is why does he need to be president for this? He’s already mayor of a respectably sized town. Why not doing it for New York workers now?
If it’s because businesses will flee, isn’t that a condemnation of the policy?
As mayor he has the opportunity to get right on this. Start by taking out those damned robot traffic lights. A cop with white gloves directing traffic from the center of every intersection should do wonders for NYC gridlock, the cop union’s membership numbers, and the city’s budget.
I think someone here described how they’d “create jobs” in Venezuela: at a deli, they would have someone the order, and then bring it to guy who would cut the meat. Then, when they needed more ‘jobs’, they’d have someone take the order from the customer, but hand it off to someone else who would bring it to the butcher. Voila, job creation.

And then there’s the precedent that if you don’t like who is governing you, you can toss them out. A little too 1776-y for leftists.
Of course lefties love the EU. It is a far-left organization AND totally unaccountable to the British voters – the best of both worlds.
I can’t explain it, but it stabs right at the heart of the progressive religion.
this sounds like like the lefties here.
They want power centered in DC and they want the president to act as a dictator. That is why they freak when a Republican is elected. They want a dictator but it has the be their dictator. If we stuck to the constitution as written it would not matter as much who is president.
The remainers are members of the credentialed elite class that has profited from the unholy alliance with Brussels. Of course they want to keep that shit going.

Saw that on the local news last night. It might be my cold, black, libertarian heart but it didn’t do anything for me. And I found the anchors fawning reaction distasteful and cringey.
But fuck this chick injecting race into everything.
I saw it differently, albeit from a libertarian perspective.

McDonald’s not bank on a de Blasio win: McDonald’s acquires A.I. company to help automate the drive-thru, its third tech deal this year
Apprente, a Silicon Valley company founded in 2017, uses artificial intelligence to understand drive-thru orders, which could cut down on service times. McDonald’s said the technology also could be used someday in its self-order kiosks and mobile app.
The Chicago-based company said it evaluated Apprente’s technology in McDonald’s test restaurants.
Apprente’s employees will be the founding members of a group called McD Tech Labs, which will be housed within McDonald’s global technology team. The burger chain wants to grow its presence in Silicon Valley by hiring more tech experts, including engineers and data scientists.

It’s troubling that they can block an RCMP investigation.
We put the “Polite” in politics (or politesse, not sure which). Yeah, it’s bullshit.
if no one stands up to him
No truer words. Even due process solutions require fillings and arguments; you can’t even begin to have a constitutional crisis until you have a ruling.
I keep coming back to this: every outrage in every government is tacitly constitutional if it’s not confronted. The Soviet Union guaranteed free speech, for example. Every lapse is just subject to interpretation, and the greatest western “democracies” are different only in degree.
So, at the end of the day, every government move is constitutional . . . unless ruled not so . . . and then the court obeyed.
Looks at Trump, Obama, Bush…
You sure about that?
Virginia Madsen! Mmmmm… Speaking of underappreciated movies from last night, “The Hot Spot” is a forgotten gem that stars the lovely Madsen, directed by Dennis Hopper and also features a young Jennifer Connelly in the altogether. Pretty great neo-noir.

Okay, that made me laugh.
Bellichuk will straighten that young man’s life out. It will be just like James Cagney in “Angels With Dirty Faces”.
He will make a come back when you least expect it.

Seconded.
In her lawsuit, Taylor claims that during training sessions in June 2017, Brown “exposed himself and kissed her without her permission.” Later in that month, Brown allegedly “started masturbating behind her and ejaculated on her back” while she was watching television at her house.
So he exposed himself in a locker-room, then tried to kiss her = rape?
Then somehow he ended up in her house? I think her story may be missing a few things in between.
Or, was she watching television at her house and he was somewhere else and still manager to ejaculate on her back through an open window? Because that would be an impressive story.
Look aSshole, you have to believe her. Every thime a fascist says he doesn’t believe a woman, a fairy dies
Ernst Rohm?
forcible rape?
I’s confused.
Rapey rape.
We needed a new term once “rape” was expanded to include bad dates, catcalling, being eyed by an unattractive man, regret, etc.
Why are you trying to mitigate their trauma?
In other NFL news the Patriots have signed John Bolton
The only way to play defense is to play offense?
Fuck yeah. Have him run a slant-pattern across the middle right in front of a linebacker. I’d pay to watch.

Has this really surprised anyone since the Ralph Sampson case?
Hey, lay off the Hoo legend!
Damn, my IQ dropped and went negative after reading that.
Nice musical choice this morning. The Cars are proof that being in a band will get you chicks no matter what you look like.
You might think
That shit looks like an advertisement for molesters.
Writing catchy pop tunes is much harder than it appears. Some bands catch lighting in a bottle once, maybe twice but those ugly fellers were at it for a very long time. They actually seemed to have some pretty good chops even though I was never a fan. Credit where credit is due.
The Cars and the Pretenders are things NewWife and I can agree on, mostly because I’m a guitar nut.
Elliot Easton is the bomb. This tune is particularly yummy in that it’s classic high school pop that is understandable by anyone; Easton’s rockabilly throwdown with the verb set for just the tiniest bit of roominess is one of the few reasons to be proud of having grown up in the seventies.
Along that line, how the hell Chrissie Hynde repeatedly finds badass, twangy guitarists in England is anybody’s guess. One of the weirdest experiences as someone born in the heart of America’s root music is to see Brits doing as good or better a job of preserving and furthering my traditions.
I find that when listening to much of the music that I discounted in my youth there is quite a bit of nuance that went over my head at the time. “My Sharona” is a dumb pop tune but the guitar player is a gunslinger. These days everything is designed by engineers, at least the most popular stuff.
That solo in the song is awesome. I like that song. Same with ‘Good girls don’t.’
Love the line ‘good girls don’t….but I do’.
One of the few reasons I ever listened to anyone as a boy or young man was guitar. I knew other people didn’t appreciate the things they heard because they didn’t play, and I inferred that the world was full of things that I didn’t fully understand because I had never done them myself.
You can be forgiven – the lead break was edited out of the single version of My Sharona.
fairly complete?
Les Paul for the win
Correct. That song was the soundtrack of my summer circa 1979. It was everywhere.
That first album was a masterpiece. Had the cassette and used to listen to it from beginning to end.
I still hear Moving in Stereo in my head when I see a hot girl in a bikini. Candy-O is still my favorite Cars album.

AOC Says Republicans Against The President’s Impeachment Must Go On the Record
Demanded!
Doesn’t she have a district to represent somewhere in her purse?
They are getting what they voted for, good and hard.
How much does a Good & Hard with AOC cost? Asking for a friend.
She seems the type to just give it away. And then decide a week later that you raped her.
She could never do honest work, like whoring.
I think there’s a real threat she gets primaried due to her uh, lack of concern with her constituents.
This is how the long march to gulags begins.
I hope the ignorant and indifferent minds who egg this illiberal buffoon on understand this part of the deal.
I agree with AOC. Her party has the House. Hold a fucking vote. I want to know who’s in favor of impeachment and not just playing #resist and I think the country deserves to have that on record headed into 2020.
If I was an enraged lefty I would be pissed at the Dems for _not_ holding an impeachment vote. Small variable but I wonder how this will play out in 2020.
YOU PROMISED!
What’s next? You gonna tall her you will still respect her in the morning?
Didn’t they already do this? And the Dems abstained.

Best TV was yesterday’s Chicago White Sox game. In the 3rd inning they interviewed the Sox’ first round draft pick, who went to college at California (Berkeley). This was only the kid’s first or second trip to Chicago and the announcer asked him what he thought of the city and his answer was “It’s a lot cleaner than west coast cities.”
You just know he was referring to the needles and feces on the streets of SF. I laughed so hard I had to take a shit – in a proper toilet of course.

Happy 911 Day! /s
I was at home that day, looking after a four month old LH Jr. I saw on the news that one of the WTC buildings was on fire. Something plane crash. I ran an errand at the grocery store and came back to find the second tower on fire. After seeing the buildings collapse, I drove out and bought some gasoline. I remember how quiet it seemed outside – and seeing a teenage girl crying at the gas station. Weird day.
I had been through the Trade Center a few days earlier for a meeting in lower Manhattan and remember how giant those building were. Was in Newark on 9/11. Could see the some out the window, then somebody told me “the tower collapsed”. I assumed she meant the radio tower at the top. It was beyond my comprehension that the entire building could collapse,
The building got evacuated and I drove out of Newark to the sound of fire / air-raid sirens. I was pretty damn furious. Knew I was going to end up back in the National Guard despite the shit I experienced in Ozy’s article while in the Marines.
I had just come back from taking the dog to the vet, and popped on the news to see the first tower on fire. It seemed at first to be an accident, but then on live TV I saw the second tower get hit, and realized some serious shit was happening. I looked out from the deck to the skyline and saw the smoke from the burning towers, and noticed there was not a single plane in the normally very-crowded sky; until a couple of F-16s went screaming by. Definitely a strange feeling.
The country was very quiet that day and many days following. You never realize how much air traffic is part of your daily listening experience until you don’t have any.
In any case, the terrorists won: TSA.
I am far more bitter about that than I am about what happened on the day itself.
If I was going to write a history, I would mark the days after 9/11 as a big turning point for the decline of American ideals. Or at least hastening the decline.
Yes. The beginning of the end for the loss of American freedom.
We are not the US Hing Kong thinks we are.
TSA, Patriot Act, Homeland Security Administration – yup, they won alright.
All that shit.
You would thought “hey, maybe we should be extra-careful about letting people in here from the Middle East (cough, cough, Muslims…). But noooo…., let’s take this opportunity to build a massive security apparatus and impose it on everyone!
I was a different person then, so in the immediate aftermath the security theater didn’t seem unreasonable to me. The very first seed of doubt was planted when we were taken to the airport from MCT at Camp Geiger to fly on to our A schools. Here you have a bunch of Marines in service alphas traveling on official orders, and some goober rent-a-cop is pulling us aside to search through all our shit. I stood there as they rifled through my garment bag thinking to myself “This is fucking ridiculous”
Ha! I flew back from the Gulf War in ’91 and the first place we landed was the public airport in Bangor Maine. I exited the plane carrying my M16 which had not left my side for 6 months and still kind of twitchy. The security guard at the gate eyed me, and I eyed him back. Then he found other things to do.
I managed to squeeze in a trip to China in November 2001 before all the security theater started.
I should add, this was January 2002 so they were especially rabid with that search.
The day after, I told several friends that America, land of the free, was dead. It was only a matter of time before a police state takes over.
Agreed. The previous model of hijacked flights was: land somewhere without a US extradition treaty, extort money. That was over that day, as evidenced by the flight to PA where the passengers fought back.
My team was driving a prototype to Portland and collecting data over 2,000 miles of various terrain and weather. There were two guys in the truck and two in the chase vehicle, and I was to fly up the next day to handle the client brass, and then we would fly back together triumphantly.
I got them on the phone and told them to under no circumstances turn in the rental. They laid around the hotel a day or so, but I had already told them to just hoof it back. They waited a day or so, then made the same drive back: four guys crammed in some little gas-sipper. They were miserable and exhausted after they finally got back.
I hate today. I hate seeing all the police and I hate all the politics.
I remember walking 50 blocks staying at a relatives empty empty apartment because I couldn’t get home to NJ.
The next day I finally got home and I remember seeing all the cars in the commuter parking lot and wondering how many of those people weren’t coming home.
My neighbor two doors down who worked downtown had the misfortune to witness the people jumping out of the towers. He also was covered with dust from head to toe and was literally hosed down before he was able to get on a train to get home.
And when you work in NYC there is no way to avoid be reminded about the whole awful day and what it has done to the country.
I was at work. Typically we listened to Democracy Now! on the local Pacifica Station, but the next day, Amy Goodman put on someone so jubilant about the day before, saying that it needed to happen “again and again” until Americans started valuing the lives of “brown people” as much as their own.
I’ve never listened to Pacifica since. And if I ever meet Amy Goodman or Juan Gonzales IRL, I will spit on them at the very least.
I was still at Parris Island – had graduated July 20, but had stress fractures in my right shin so they made me a grad hold. We brokedicks had a weekly appointment at branch medical to monitor our progress. Mine was that morning. I was done with my exam and was putting my sock and boot back on when a corpsman came into the room and told the others to put the radio on – a plane had hit the WTC. At that early stage, they were treating it like a terrible accident. I got a sinking feeling because a cousin of mine worked at the towers. A friend and I walked out, stopping for a smoke in the smoke pit, then walked back to our squad bay. Everyone was in the common area watching TV, because now the second plane had hit and it was clearly terrorism now. All of us youngsters had the same feeling deep down – “Oh shit, this Marine Corps thing just got very real”
My father was a salesman who flew constantly, so that was my next thought, is Dad flying today? After the hit on the Pentagon, the news was full of rumors of more hijackings. Later on in the morning, I talked to Mom who said that he was supposed to fly home but it was cancelled and he was stuck in Arkansas. That’s how I learned that all flights were grounded. She also said cousin Joe was safe and sound, he was late going in to work that morning. She didn’t mention it, but after I hung up I thought of something else – they were saying a lot of firemen had been in the buildings when they collapsed, and another cousin of ours was a NYC fireman. Sept 12 came, no one had heard from Danny. OK, it’s total chaos, no one knows what’s going on. Sept 13, no word, and now it looks grim. By the weekend, it was obvious he was gone.
I was doing a makeup AT at the armory that week, last week of three. I turned the tv on when I got up and they were talking about an accident. Came back to the tv to iron my blouse and they weee now talking about multiple plane strikes including an attack on the Pentagon. Started having a sinking feeling that this wasn’t good and got my pistol out.
Got to the armory and it was a long day of listening to the news and doing stupid army games. Then a candle memorial a night or two later.
I lived in the Chicago suburbs at the time and I’d just started a new job the previous week and was on my way to work. I had friend along on the ride (he’d lost his license for BS reasons) and we were listening to ManCow on Q101.
ManCow had said earlier that morning they were gonna do some sort of joke on the audience.
When they started talking about a plane hitting one of buildings I though it was part of the joke. When they started screaming on the air about a second plane I switched over to WLS to find out that they weren’t joking.
When I went to lunch that afternoon I don’t think I’ve ever been in a McDonalds that was so full, yet so quiet. Very somber. No one talked except to place an order. Everyone sat around kinda slowly picking at their food.

These @ecfr numbers are remarkable. After decades in which millions of Europeans have been protected from the Soviet Union and Russia by the United States, the vast majority of Europeans would want to stay neutral in a potential conflict between Russia and the United States

He learned this from ostriches: stick your head in the sand, and danger is gone.
Most Americans have become pretty exasperated with NATO. We like Poland and the rest of the Eastern European countries, but have had enough of Germany and France.
Global friendships will probably re-align over the next few years. Western Europe probably goes with China while we get closer to Russia if they can behave themselves on their western border. Russia is the natural counter-weight to Chinese expansion.
Maybe we could yank troops and support and let them reassess.
^This. Enough with this bullshit.
Although it’s sort of comforting to know that Germany has pretty close to zero military right now…
That’s the one part I can’t stand about Western Europeans.
The Soviets were salivating at over running their sorry asses and all that stopped them was the presence of American might.
Which somehow makes America the bad guys in their eyes. Fuck them.
Way too many people believe the wrong side won the Cold War.
Why the Left hates Russia and loves China now? The damn Ruskies (and Romanians, Poles, Czechs…) gave up on communism.
so did the Chinese to be honest
Eh. Still a totalitarian dictatorship run by a leftist elite.
Just what our betters desire everywhere.
Yeah, their economic model is a lot closer to Mussolini’s Italy or the Third Reich than Maoism, whatever they may say. Massive companies are free to make money so long as they obey the state.
Not just obey – cede partial ownership to the state.
As opposed to America?
Here’s the thing. The U.S. policy from the end of World War II was to provide covert assistance to leftist ‘anti-communist’ political parties, in order to ensure they would defeat pro-soviet political parties.
The Ivy Leaguers running the show were progressives and utterly hostile to liberalism, and consequently they kneecapped the liberal parties too.
If I were a European, damn right I’d be resentful at the U.S. The US didn’t so much protect Europe from the Russkis so much as to ensure the boot on Europeans’ necks was homegrown. Kind of like how the Soviets treated Poland. Is it shocking that despite decades of being ‘protected’ against western aggression by Russian blood and treasure, the Poles really dislike the Russians?
The European elites hate America because they
a) think of themselves as the pinnacle of civilization
b) are less capable, less wealthy, & less powerful that the uncultured boors on this side of the pond
c) want to be top dogs once again.
And thanks in significant part to the U.S.’ encouragement of the soft-socialism that passes for free markets in the old continent, they hate fee markets and fear competition.
I don’t find their dislike surprising or even unwarranted. The U.S. really should have pulled out in the fifties.
Good points. Something to consider.
Most Europeans are pretty clueless when it comes to economics. The education system is clearly of the soft lefty variety
Well, of course. The USSR had a great track record of putting lackeys and dimwits into power in their puppet states.

Amazon is one step ahead with their checkout-less store. Just put your stuff in a bag and walk on out the door.
Some of the Stop & Shop locations here have a bank of wee guns that one grabs on the way in so as to scan one’s purchases on the go. When finished, walk up to self check out, plug in the gun, and pay the bill.

New Jersey has that. Of course.
And Oregon. Or rather they ban self serve (except for cardlock and non-gas such as diesel). Full service is rare. It’s all mini-serve, meaning they pump your gas, maybe swipe your card or take your cash.
The signs around here say “Full Service” but the fellows always get indignant when I ask why they aren’t filling up the windshield-washer fluid and inflating the tires to the proper PSI.

According to Rasmussen, “Twenty-eight percent of Democrats say Americans should be prohibited by law from belonging to pro-gun rights organizations like the NRA.”
The same poll shows 32 percent of Democrat voters support “declaring the gun rights group a terrorist organization in the community where they live.” Only 14 percent of Republican voters supported such a declaration.
Why would any Republican support that declaration?
Just look at the distribution for IQ and you’ll realize that 14 percent of any large group of people are morons and fifty percent shouldn’t be allowed to vote.

Strange development. Went to interview at a school. They had me fill out a bunch of paperwork, including written answers to various questions. No real interview to speak of. They looked at it briefly and said what level I wanted to teach. They wanted me to start *the next day*. I said I couldn’t do that and we tabled it.
Other better-speaking coordinator came down and we spoke. They suggest I start on Friday. Hilariously, they thought Friday 13 would be super superstitious for me so I start on Monday Sept 16. That’s when I wanted to start anyway so I went along with it.
Great that the job is closer to home and seems to be less micromanaged, and the curriculum is already laid out for me. Seems more like a school that just lets you get on with your shit the way you see fit. They let me take the books home, and easy-peasy. I get to teach 10-13 year-olds so none of that kindy shit.
Not making a ton of money but I’ll trade it for happiness. Teaching for a month and then Fall break kicks in. It’s a lot easier to quit jobs here so I’ll stick it out for a month and then see if I want to stay. Life finds a way.

Question for the more woodwise of you. I recently moved into a house on 3 acres of lightly wooded land and this morning saw a spider (in my bedroom) that looked very much like a brown recluse (or I suppose a very brown yellow sac spider, but it was very much the brown recluse coloration). I did not get a close enough look for my old eyes to discern the fiddle marking. The question is this: How big can they get? This one had a leg spread a bit larger than a quarter and I had always thought they were smaller than that.
As big as your head. Something like this
If I see a spider that size I am capturing it and naming it Fido.

When people start to work here (from out of state,) I tell them about how careful they need to be around brown recluses. Most think I’m kidding until I show them pictures on the internet.
The dehumanizing of those deemed “others” is among the most chilling of fascism’s tenets. In this, President Trump excels.
I thought it was the government control of the economy.
Yeah the whole, ” we will murder you if you don’t do what we say” was what I found chilling.
Protection racket
Lawmakers in California have advanced a bill aimed at ensuring minimum wage, workers’ compensation and other benefits for contract workers in the gig economy.
The state Senate passed the measure known as Assembly Bill 5 on Tuesday evening, in a move that’s likely to have major ramifications for on-demand delivery and ride-hailing companies, such as Uber, DoorDash and Lyft, whose business model classifies most of their workers as independent contractors.
——-
“This is a huge win for workers across the nation!” the California Labor Federation said in a statement posted to Twitter. “It’s time to rebuild the middle class and ensure ALL workers have the basic protections they deserve.”
Protect those workers from autonomy and self-ownership. Way to go, California.
“This is a huge win for workers across the nation!”
Except for the ones utilizing Uber, DoorDash and Lyft, who will be pulling out of CA.
Taxicab driver unions don’t want to actually compete for their customers.
If my catholic upbringing has taught me anything (other than how to eat with my hands) its that, no matter how well you do the math, the pull out doesn’t work out like you expect.
“Well if you can’t convince someone to pay $70 for a ride to the airport, you didn’t deserve that job anyway.”
Rand Paul, libertarian wack-bird
Tuesday on Fox News Channel’s “Your World,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) commented on the departure of National Security Adviser John Bolton from the Trump administration.
Paul said, “I think the threat of war around the world is greatly diminished with Bolton out of the White House. I think he had a naive point of view for the world that we should topple regimes everywhere and institute democratic governments and we would make the world perfect or remake the world in our image and frankly doesn’t work that way. There’s a lot of history of getting rid of strongmen in the Middle East and having them replaced by vacuums or chaos. Or actually making the place more hospitable for terrorist training.”
He added, “I think his idea that the way you deal with Iran is topple the government or the whale — the way you deal with North Korea is topple the government. The president is talking about not having regime change and finding a diplomatic solution of some of these conflicts around the world, and I think the president deserves to have somebody who’s his national security visor who actually will try to further his policy and not try to stymie it.”
Saw a few comments saying that Rand Paul is a dangerous isolationist. I don’t get where using diplomacy, trading with other countries and refraining from involvement in their internal affairs instead of bombing them is “isolationist”.
>> a dangerous isolationist
tallest midget? Army Intelligence? ::gazes at navel::
I always ask people peddling the ‘isolationist’ smear if they pump a few rounds into a neighbor’s home every few months or so to let em know you care?
Some people get the point. Most don’t.
” if they pump a few rounds into a neighbor’s home every few months or so to let em know you care?”
That’s their servants’ job.
Conservatives still count a lot of war mongers among their numbers.

The People never get nuance. If you do not support every action by the military and every war you are a naive pacifist and probably a commie. If you support any military action to protect the people and property of the United States you are a war monger.
Nuance is kind of important to morality. Shooting your neighbor when he is climbing in your window with an erection and a machete is not wrong. Shooting him when he is cutting his grass is not right.
8. Meaning comes from context.
If nuance was ever alive, the Internet killed it. You either like or hate something, you’re either 100% on our side or you’re the enemy, etc.
The People never get nuance.
I’m not sure I agree. Sure, partisans never get nuance. Because it’s their job to not be nuanced. But, people, most people at least, get what they’re used to. And we’ve been on hyper-interventionism for the better part of a quarter century. If the government were to lay out an alternate policy, and stick with it, people would get used to that.
These would be the same people who think we need to funnel billions of dollars to Iran every year so they don’t bomb us. Their attitude is “If they’re basically peaceful, bomb them to keep them afraid, and if they’re basically violent then cower in fear and pay them whatever extortion money they demand.” I guess it’s consistent…
In his op-ed, published in the Sacramento Bee, Newsom asserted that the misclassification of employees as contractors has helped exacerbate income inequality.
“Workers lose basic protections like the minimum wage, paid sick days and health insurance benefits. Employers shirk responsibility to safety net programs like workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance. Taxpayers are left to foot the bill,” he wrote. “Reversing the trend of misclassification is a necessary and important step to improve the lives of working people.”
That job sucks. I’d rather see you starve.
InfoWars so buyer beware and I’m not sure if I believe this or not, but if it is true SMOD would be justified.

OT: Poor EF has been so tired because of her new job – and the additional fun of driving to courts in different counties.
Last night she was sitting on the sofa while I was reading on the rug below her. I start talking about our last trip to Asheville and she suddenly blurts out “North Kent Mall!”
Apparently she dozed off and thought I was talking about a mall that closed twenty something years ago. After a laugh about that … she dozed off again and said “Brush your teeth!”
So yeah – the whole full-time 8-5 work is a new thing to her since she’s mostly worked part-time and/or had more of a roaming work-for-yourself job. She is making some good money now but the change is having side-effects with more LH Jr responsibility for me, and less time with EF. Is it worth the $$? Dunno.

I’m not sure he wants to, she fell asleep during his work.
There was a bit of discussion about um, hair down there around the pool a few weeks ago. As far as I could surmise, if you went with a Three Stooges classification, the woman down the street was Larry, my wife is Curly, and the woman next door is Moe.
If you play violin, does your wife’s “boxing” improve?
Heh…..I remember when I used to have to stay up till the middle of the night to call my wife from Okinawa. I’d frequently start dozing while on the phone, and she’d be much amused when I’d do the same thing as EF and randomly mumble things that had nothing to do with the conversation.
Good morning Sloopy and the rest of you freedom-loving freaks.
Thanks for the lynx, as always.
I still hate this day. The collective we never seem to learn shit. My wife was pregnant with our daughter, so she has never spent a second on earth when we weren’t at fucking war. She interviewed me for a class last year about the most significant event in my life – excluding 9/11 – and I chose the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was so fucking cool and it did feel like shit was finally breaking the right way. Then, 12 years later we fucked it all up again. And we are still fucking it up. Reynolds posted this today, regarding the brave dudes on Flight 93:
I’m not sure about that.
That is a GREAT answer!
The fall of Berlin is a good one.
I tend to put the resignation of Tricky Dick (74) and the Fall of Saigon (75) into one kettle. It meant that I would not be heading to the war that I grew up with.

Solve homelessness with this one weird trick
At least a dozen Trump administration officials are now in Los Angeles, meeting with Mayor Eric Garcetti’s staffers to discuss the issue of homelessness in the city.
Led by Ben Hobbs, President Trump’s special assistant for domestic policy, they toured the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles, which is home to thousands of homeless people, the Los Angeles Times reports. An estimated 59,000 homeless people live in Los Angeles County, up 12 percent from 2018, with more than 36,000 in L.A., an increase of 16 percent.
——-
Garcetti staffers said they welcome the dialogue, and have been saying more federal funding is needed to get a handle on things. A spokesman for Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), Nathan Click, said in a statement that if Trump is “willing to put serious solutions — with real investment — on the table, California stands ready to talk. He could start by ending his plans to cut food stamps, gut health care for low-income people, and scare immigrant families from accessing government services.”
Sprinkle more
moneymagic pixie dust on them, and they’ll disappear. In a weird way, I hope there are strings attached to that largesse.
Report: Trump, Fed-Up With Dems, Orders White House Officials To Combat C.A. Homelessness
The Post reports, “Top officials representing the White House and the Department of Housing and Urban Development arrived in California this week for a round of meetings. A particular focus has been the ‘Skid Row’ section of Los Angeles, officials said. The president is directly involved with the initiative, officials said, and has asked for updates. Officials representing the Justice Department were also part of the tour, according to two government officials.”
The Post stated that ideas under discussion include “razing existing tent camps for the homeless, creating new temporary facilities and refurbishing existing government facilities,” according to two administration officials. The Post added that, on Tuesday, city officials hosted officials from the Veterans Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Domestic Policy Council, the Justice Department and HUD on a tour of the Jordan Downs housing project.
Judd Deere, a White House spokesman, told the Post, “Like many Americans, the president has taken notice of the homelessness crisis, particularly in cities and states where the liberal policies are combining to dramatically increase poverty and public health risks. President Trump has directed his team to go further and develop a range of policy options for consideration to deal with this tragedy.”
And everyone involved pretends that throwing more money and building more government programs will fix it.
What needs to change
Overturn 9th Circus insane ruling that cities can’t enforce vagrancy and no sleeping rules unless they provide accommodations. That right there is the problem. It’s not up to government or society to provide proper housing. Hell, the bums don’t have to either. What they can’t do is sleep/shit/live on sidewalks or parks. Start from there and the problems subside.
*sobs in the corner of his tent
It will be useless both practically and politically. He’s volunteering to get blamed for it by inserting himself; just let the Left Coast metropoli drown in their own river of feces/stupidity.
Sure, but now the media are all focused on the issue. A lot of people who knew nothing about the homeless problems are getting a crash course.
You stole this post from The Early P Brooks.
Speaking of monotonous drones
There’s a numbing sameness to political life during the presidency of Donald Trump. A series of scandalous stories break and fade, and appalling presidential behavior sparks outrage that quickly recedes into oblivion, only to be followed by another round, and then another. Yet even in the context of this seemingly endless cycle of scandal and outrage, the past 10 days or so has managed to stand out as unusually jam-packed with an almost surreal procession of astonishing events.
——-
Nearly every day the president shows serious signs, not only of pervasive corruption, but of psychological impairment. Yet he almost certainly will not be impeached. Nor will he be removed from office by way of the 25th Amendment, which speaks of a president who is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” On the contrary, Trump is planning to run for re-election. He’s certainly vulnerable, but his defeat is far from certain. Which means that it is quite possible that a president who regularly displays a thoroughgoing lack of fitness for the office he holds could well end up serving as president for two full terms.
Which means that, far beyond Trump himself, it is the American system of government itself that is not well. In fact, it is badly ailing, and we haven’t got a clue how to heal it.
——-
In the U.S., Trump is insulated from challenges to his power by a rock-solid core of support from roughly 42 percent of the electorate — and nearly 90 percent of Republicans — that shows no sign at all of abandoning him. With those votes in his pocket, Trump can do or say just about anything, no matter how deranged, without fear of having to face a fundamental challenge to his presidency.
Democracy is broken. We know this because our attempts to expel an elected President who has the support of people we don’t like have failed.
What’s even more frightening is the likelihood of a second term, because those hicks and deplorables and Nazis will vote for Public Enemy Number One again. Our shining city in the swamp will be reduced to rubble.
Switch Trump out for Biden and this article could be prophetic.
Here’s what I find particularly insipid about all this – Donald Trump isn’t demonstrably more corrupt or unfit for office than any of the other recent presidents. And if you even mention that to people like this, citing chapter and verse, you’ll only be accused of “whataboutism”. If you’re arguing that the current president is singularly corrupt or unfit, the relative context of that behavior kind of matters. But, nope, you’re supposed to take it as dogma.
These people used to at least maintain a patina of intellectual seriousness. But, they’ve dropped even that.
This is pretty cool;

Huh, turns out ordinary, average people can do cool shit. Largest sea evacuation in history. Over 500K people in less than 9 hours.
And exactly 1 Coast Guard boat.
Vanity Fair’s mind reading skills on display
President Donald Trump may be preparing to step up and take on the current homelessness crisis in America’s cities—but it won’t be because of some pure-hearted motivation to help the poor. The Washington Post reports that the Trump administration is preparing to launch a “sweeping effort to address homelessness in California,” which is being done at Trump’s direction. “Like many Americans, the president has taken notice of the homelessness crisis, particularly in cities and states where the liberal policies are combining to dramatically increase poverty and public health risks,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said. “President Trump has directed his team to go further and develop a range of policy options for consideration to deal with this tragedy.”
——-
As part of their efforts, a number of Trump officials went to Los Angeles on Tuesday to survey the city’s homelessness crisis, touring Skid Row and learning more about how the city government is taking action. (“They’re just not thoughtful—and, quite frankly, not smart enough to know what we’re doing,” Breelyn Pete, chief of state and federal affairs for L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, said at an event Monday before the visit.)
——-
Unsurprisingly, Trump’s newfound desire to help eradicate homelessness is likely being done with selfish intentions. With the homeless crisis largely centered in Democrat-run cities and states like California, drawing attention to the issue and publicly taking steps to address it allows Trump to demonize the liberal areas and falsely equate their policies with a spike in homelessness, as Deere’s statement suggested.
Trump obviously is incapable of empathy. He’s just concern trolling progressives for political reasons.
And Republicans are much too stupid to realize our policies are ineffectual solely because we have not yet thrown enough money at the problem. We just needs more studies, and more grants, and more NGO parasitism.
falsely equate their policies with a spike in homelessness
You’ve had complete, uninterrupted control of these places for decades.
More:
California officials were reportedly caught off-guard by the news of Trump’s planned anti-homelessness efforts, though many realize the motivations behind it are almost definitely impure. “Yet again this is bravado for Trump’s base with no interest in the actual policy experts’ recommendations to solve an issue,” Rep. Ro Khanna told the Washington Post, while Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf called Trump’s actions “pre-election political posturing at the expense of our most vulnerable residents.”
——-
But the president’s seeming intention to scoop up the homeless and throw them into government facilities clearly isn’t the solution Californians want. Bob Erlenbusch, executive director of the Sacramento Regional Coalition to End Homelessness, told USA Today the idea feels “like internment camps for people experiencing homelessness,” while David Garcia, policy director at the University of California, Berkeley’s Terner Center for Housing Innovation, noted that “any strategy that focuses on removing homeless camps and displacing the homeless lacks compassion at best, and at worst exacerbates the challenges.” “We need federal support and resources to build more housing for people living on our streets,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a statement. “But simply cracking down on homelessness without providing the housing that people need is not a real solution and will likely only make the situation worse.”
Listen to the demonstrably incompetent experts, dammit!
I don’t get the feeling the homeless are looking for houses.
Just sayin’.
though many realize the motivations behind it are almost definitely impure.
Color me shocked that politician seeking office wants to score political points. I don’t think it is a federal issue, but it is ironic that, assuming the feds could do anything measurable to help (which they can’t…) other than throwing more money down the drain these people would prefer it not be done because intentions are, to them, more important than results (which is a position that has racked up quite the death toll.).
But here’s what’s really going on: what if Trump actually *does” do something and – God forbid – it actually helps reduce the problem?!!?? Oh, fuck, can you imagine how that will play??
There is some serious pants-shitting going on by the Progs in Proggie-fornia right now.
Put them on a cargo plane and drop them off in Central America. If they walk back, we might let them in.
removing homeless camps and displacing the homeless lacks compassion
As long as this is the driving force, nothing will change. Clear the illegal camp outs. Fire parasites like David García and shut their empires down.
Like… a homeless shelter?
Oh, but in another California city, someone build housing for the homeless and the government destroyed it.
This is what proves that a significant portion of “progressives” are not just well-meaning people who let their emotions get in the way and sometimes lead them into bad policy ideas – they are actually evil. They are racketeers who profit from big government and won’t let anyone undermine their cash cow, especially not voluntary sector people who are solving the problems that the government can’t.

Tucker hails firing of John Bolton
“It is great news for America. Especially for the large number of young people who would have been killed in pointless wars if Bolton had stayed on the job. They may not be celebrating tonight, but they should be,” said Carlson, noting that oil prices dropped on the news of Bolton’s firing, since global investors “knew for certain that Bolton planned on launching another Middle Eastern conflict that would inevitably spike energy prices.”
In his opening monologue on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Carlson looked back on his March 2018 interview with Bolton, recalling that Bolton displayed “selective amnesia” about the consequences of “regime change” in the Middle East. …
“If you are wondering why so many progressives are mourning Bolton’s firing tonight, it’s because Bolton himself fundamentally was a man of the left. There was not a human problem John Bolton wasn’t totally convinced could be solved with the brute force of government. That’s an assumption of the left, not the right. Don’t let the mustache fool you,” said Carlson, accusing Bolton of “promoting Obama loyalists within the National Security Council.”
Carlson said he had long warned about Bolton and that he’d been itching to start another war in the Middle East. He said Bolton was invited on the show Tuesday to respond and the offer still stands.
“In some ways, the story isn’t simply about John Bolton, it’s about the countless John Boltons who currently staff the federal bureaucracy. Deeply mediocre lifers, drunk on hubris, protected by bulletproof job security. They’re more likely to die on the job than be fired and they know it. As a group, these people have done a lot to make this country poorer and sadder and more divided,” he added.
A friend just said firing Bolton the day before 9/11 is like firing someone on Christmas Eve
Nice.
Carlson really knows how to sweet-talk a guy into being on his show.
True story – there’s a guy that looks *exactly* like John Bolton who works near me. I see him at a chinese place I go to at lunch some times. Exact same stache. I want to go and see if I see him today.
NGOs have been doing this all along, no reason to think that the Dems wouldn’t directly be doing it.
