So I realized, after I spent all day telling other people what I wanted them to do, that even though I still have plenty of actual do-the-work responsibilities, I’ve basically become management. Not sure whether this is going to end with a bender, and whether that bender is going to end with Drano, but… I’m definitely trying not to turn into a pointy-head. I really don’t love spending all day talking.
To my view, this (and Swissy’s link from earlier today) are just lesser forms of the same millenialist ideology that led the Taliban to blow up the giant stone carvings of Buddha. Lesser degree, because these toads lack imagination and ability compared to the Taliban, but it comes from the same place.
At Heroic Mulatto’s request, I pass along this link for your adolescent snickering.
Cool, now do ULA.
I smell a H&H Extended Universe episode.
NASA attacks Elon Musk and SpaceX for ‘years of delays’ failing to deliver for US taxpayer
Pot, Kettle?
NASA is jelly.
How about failing to get out of low earth orbit for 50 fucking years? In my opinion, the re-landing on the launch pad of the rocket by SpaceX? That’s more impressive than anything NASA has done in well, 50 years.
South Park (and Trey Parker and Matt Stone): Still awesome. Their official “apology” to China after the NBA’s blubbering:

I love those guys.
Nice
Stupid Mongorians!
I was not really a fan of their Al Gore apology episodes.
Are you serial?
Update: China banned last week’s episode
China banned South Park entirely.
Is it worth watching? I think I still watched South Park last year but didn’t plan to watch the new season.
It’s one of their stronger episodes in a while, IMHO.
I agree. I had pretty much written them off, but it was damn good.
Okay, I’ve just watched it. No way to sugarcoat it: very anti-Chicom.
This is why Trump bent the knee to Xi. He didn’t want to be banned in China.
I would fuck them to death.
lesson for wokemedians: that’s how edgy is done
You know who else made a cum lake?
Harvey Weinstein?
(to go with my tweet above) Randy Marsh?
Boy Scouts?

Peter North ?
You?
STEVE SMITH!
Well, there were at least 3 guys (probably more) who made Veronica Lake cum.
So ‘tarded it can’t wait for Tard Tuesday
Bonus ‘tard commentary – An unsure coward who couldn’t find Turkey on the map Got rolled…. Shocking. He equates action of any kind with “look I’m getting things done”. Meanwhile real leaders see a mark…a stone cold sucker ripe for the picking. What a clown. He has no clue what he just did.
John Bolton is the source and his “direct knowledge” is he read it in the NYT.
a National Security Council source with direct knowledge of the discussions told Newsweek.
Did he pounce on this?
Just remember kids, putting your own interests ahead of those of others is totes fascistic.
DU is pro war now? Trump literally ran on bringing the troops home and not engaging in military adventurism. Ha hasn’t been as good as I’d like in sticking to this but he has been vastly superior to the last two pres’s.
Not killing brown people is fascist.
Not killing brown people is racist.
You see because clearly all those isolationists only care about not going to war because they don’t want white boys dying killing brown boys.
We aren’t killing them all! We’re bringing the ones not killed here to the USA to vote for us! /democrats
I’d say he broke their brains but he can’t break what they ain’t got.
“DU is pro war now? ”
When weren’t they? War or not war is great if a Democrat in office. War or not war is bad if a Republican is in office.
Oh boy. Trump made some Military Establishment Bitches upset. BITCH FIGHT!
Not getting involved in another pointless war sure sounds like “getting something” to me.
If Obama would have made the same decision, he would probably get a second Noble prize and praise from all the media no doubt.
“….we are not getting something…”
I have yet to have one sniveling cocksucker tell me what we are getting out of any of these ME adventures.
Experience?
We’re keeping the military industrial complex machine well oiled and rolling. Why do you hate military contractors, Suthen?
What’s with all this leaking shit? I’m all for open government, but this is getting just plain ridicules.
Maybe Thomas Friedman was right. Being China for a day is starting to make a lot of sense.
“President Trump was definitely out-negotiated and only endorsed the troop withdraw to make it look like we are getting something—but we are not getting something,”
Sure we are . We are getting a pass from the pending ratfuck in Syria.

That’s bound to be a short goddam list, and this has to be some kind of violation. If the leaker doesn’t ‘fess up, fire them all.
David Leonhardt: The rich really do pay less taxes than you do
No… No they don’t. Keep trying.
BUT IT’S NOT FAIR
/prog
I look at that chart labeled “Triumph of Injustice” and all i can see is that clearly the 1950’s were the least just, and that according to their data, this year seems to be where the taxes are the most equally distributed.
‘In the end, the expert consensus was that, whatever Buffett’s specific situation, most wealthy Americans did not actually pay a lower tax rate than the middle class. “Is it the norm?” the fact-checking outfit Politifact asked. “No.”
Time for an update: It’s the norm now.’
And we’ll prove it by cherry picking the 400 wealthiest individuals and ignoring the rest.
And pretend that anyone actually paid those gloriously-high taxes in the good old days.
I can’t find the source, but I want to say the highest effective rate on the 1% was actually 42%.
Indeed. Moreover, the government took in a lot less and spent a ton less. In 1960, the U.S. government collected $4,360 per capita in taxes in 2018 dollars (CPI-adjusted). In 2018, the U.S. government collected $9,685 per capita in taxes. Spending was equal to revenues in 1960, but was $12,560 per capita in 2018. The government would have to cut the budget by 65%, reducing spending by $2.68 trillion, to spend on par with 1960.
Put another way, if we returned to 1960-era tax policy and everything shook out as it did then, that “$750 billion in extra revenue” would actually be $1.7 trillion in extra deficit.
It looks like he is counting all taxes – payroll, income, property (I wonder about sales taxes, though). Payroll definitely hits those making less than @$120K harder, as it phases out around that point, so the net rate goes down the more you make. At $500K, your effective payroll tax rate is multiples less than someone making $100K. That’s probably a good chunk of what props up effective rates for the middle class.
Since the Trump delivered a net decrease in taxes to the middle class, along with an increase in rates for the upper bracket (and the much-hated by the NYT SALT cap), its hard to see how the tax cut hurt the middle class. He also cut corporate rates but individuals don’t pay those. Love the conflation, BTW of business and individual taxes in an article comparing taxes paid by rich and not-rich people, you dishonest hack.
So we’re left with “tax avoidance”. Much appreciated that you didn’t really describe what that is in practice.
I think this is arguable for most non-closely held corporations, but let that pass. Remember this statement, though, next time they argue that taxing dividends isn’t double-taxation.
Fuck you, cut spending.
Also, if you are going to referenze saez, you should also remember his slavish approval of Venezuela’s Socialist Economy.
Believe me, if I could defer all my income into some other form of personal revenue I could realize, I would. However, because I don’t have huge assets at my disposal, my choices in how to negotiate my compensation are more limited.
That’s just a whole lotta derp. Raising the taxes at the margins is not about revenue, never was and never will be. It’s punitive. If you want to raise real money, you have to tax the middle class. Multiplication is a bitch.
The tax increases would bring in about $750 billion a year, enough to pay for universal pre-K, an infrastructure program and much more. Those are the kinds of policies that do lift economic growth.
No data needed for those claims.
$730B is like, 60% of current revenues. It wouldn’t even pay off the deficit.
Deficits don’t matter (thanks, Dick Cheney) so of course every dollar in extra revenue* gets to be spent on some bullshit hobby horse (universal pre-K? really? why not just get rid of parents?).
* = There will not be much, if any, actual extra revenue, especially after the first year of implementation.
Florida already has universal voluntary pre-K. My oldest went through it, and my youngest is going through it. It is 3 hours of “school” completely indistinguishable from the pre-schooling that they have on either side of it. So it is really “3 hours of state subsidized daycare”.
Pre- K is vital we must indoctrinate them into the system sooner!!!
Well, everybody (at least st UCBerkeley) knows Trump has stalled the economy. We have to try and revive the Obama years where everyone had good jobs and were getting raises.
A progressive tax rate is bullshit. Why do I care if Bill Gates pays the same tax rate as I do? What does that do for me? Nothing, not a damn thing, it’s all about envy and nothing else.
And, of course, nothing is stopping Gates, Zuckerberg, Buffett, etc. from voluntarily paying more (except the army of tax attorneys they employ, but nobody’s forcing them to do that, either).
PSA for gun glibs.

FTA: “The average tax rate on the richest 400 households last year was only 23%, down from 70% in 1950 . . .”
The average tax rate ‘on’* the richest was 70% in 1950? Really??
* The use of “on” rather that “paid by” makes me think this was the nominal average rate rather than the true effective rate.
Wrong place, comment should under #5 above.

Neat. Earlier this week, that price required 1000 round minimum.

As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!). They must, with Europe and others, watch over…
….the captured ISIS fighters and families. The U.S. has done far more than anyone could have ever expected, including the capture of 100% of the ISIS Caliphate. It is time now for others in the region, some of great wealth, to protect their own territory. THE USA IS GREAT!
The chosen one hath spoken.
I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!)
I mean he was over there, and they made Mexican for dinner, and it was Game Over.
I thought ZARDOZ was the chosen one.
Donald Trump is far and away the biggest dumbass ever to hold the office of Presidency, and yet he’s somehow better than every single person the Dems put up against him in 2016 or will put up against him in 2020.
Also about 1000% more hilarious.
^
When he says things like this it doesn’t rub me the wrong way like Mr. “The Oceans began to recede” for some reason. It’s like he knows he is full of shit, you know he is full of shit, and he knows you know he is full of shit. It’s bluster and it is hilarious.
He’s trolling for the reaction and it is funny. You just know he was snickering when he thumbed that into his phone.
I think it’s actually the HAT and he’s back on the snow again.
Narcissistic bullshit vs. truly absurd bullshit.
Juvenile bluster, even.
^^^
LBJ has to be in the running for that, too.
+1 See my appendix scar, boys?
He’s really done an amazing job of laying out how our Betters are not, actually, better.
Just you wait until the next Republican is president and the corporate press is pining for the “honorable Mr. Trump”.
I remember when the talking point was that George W. Bush was dumb and evil (fairly accurate), then John McCain was dumb and evil (accurate), then Mitt Romney was dumb and evil…
The thing is I don’t disagree that Trump is dumb, but I also know how this game works
You’d think that would be impossible but I thought the same with Bush the Younger.
If they cared even a little bit about truth, It’s likely they could reasonably claim that Trump was more pro-gay than the next Republican president. Or more respective of transgender people (Caitlyn Jenner). Or more pro-Jewish.
“Arch-conservative” Mitt Romney. That one always got me.
Woodrow Wilson. Top that.
“Donald Trump is far and away the biggest dumbass”
*Jimmy Carter* Get off my lawn.
Donald Trump is far and away the biggest dumbass ever to hold the office of Presidency,
For certain values of dumbass, he’s not even in the top ten.

re: adolescent snickering……way back when I had a girlfriend from Kentucky, she made frequent mention of this place as emblematic of the home that she considered quite backward: “Who else would have a park named something like this?”
Euphemisms don’t change with time, this is known.
The bones in question are truly mammoth.
20 bucks, same as the state park.
There once was a girl from Kentucky…
Nantucket, Kentucky?
…who broke up with me via long distance phone call to the city across the country that we were going to move to together only she never showed up.
Sorry, is that not what you were going for?
I’d say you dodged a bullet there buddy.
Most likely. Her brother tried to warn me in a discreet, tactful manner more than once that she was at least slightly nuts.
That’s a solid man, right there.
Yes indeed. I didn’t know him much, only met him a handful of times, but every time he would say something like “You know, I love Brenda, she’s my sister, BUT…..don’t believe everything she tells you” or “BUT…..she changes her mind the way most people change socks” That last one is a verbatim quote, which I remembered because it was rather hilarious in context.
Sorry, buddy. But as Q said, you dodged a bullet.
It only still bothers me because she never gave me a reason why. The first month I was in LA, we spoke almost every day and everything was all lovey dovey, she was heading out just as soon as she sold her business (she and her brother were partners in a toner recycling business, which had led me to the mistaken assumption that she was a really grounded chick who had her shit together….ha….hahaha). Then the sale went through, but she had to stay another couple of weeks to ease the transition to the new owner. After several weeks of that, I finally asked her one day, “You’re not coming out here, are you?” “No, I’m not. I know you’ll hate me now, and I’m sorry, but that’s it.” *click*
And that was it. In retrospect, it was all for the best clearly, but at the time I wasn’t so much heartsick over losing her as baffled as to what the hell happened and fairly obsessed with finding out why.
She was banging another guy. Sorry.
It’s not really all that complicated.
Doesn’t make her less of a bitch though.
I honestly don’t think so. I’m pretty sure she would have told me that – she was a brutally forward person. She was hardly the type to spare feelings. I think that the whole thing was kind of a whirlwind and, once I’d be gone for a while, the exhilaration of the whole thing died off and she thought to herself “What was I thinking? I’ve only known this guy for a couple of months and I’m going to move to California with him?”
That’s what her brother was trying to warn me about – I suspect she had other flings where she made extravagant promises that she reversed herself on.
‘ridance. I never grieve over a chick who turns out that bad. Rejoice, it was gonna be much worse later.
The first month I was in LA,
Well, her decision not to move is looking not-crazy, anyway.
but did she call collect?
She promised that I would get lucky…
Then I met her bother named Bucky, and we did sucky fucky.

*brain cells start popping like popcorn*
Because Obama didn’t get us in more conflicts across the globe?
Nick Sarwark agrees.
Amazingly, the first sentence actually makes sense to me. Obama started the war in Syria (in addition to countless interventions) and if you listen to the current LP chairman or read TOS you’d think that the problem with orange man is that he doesn’t war hard enough.
“Libertarian foreign policy” pretty much means neocon foreign policy at this point if we’re being honest.
(also, Lindsey is a wiener)
*likes ftfy
…too much… stupidity… brain overload…
*dies*
The phone didn’t self destruct at the contradiction when that sentence was typed?
Lindsey was melancholic and missing John McCain today.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen “Obama-libertarian” used before. Is failure of statism through incompetence libertarian, or do libertarians just celebrate the failure?
“Liberaltarians”….you know, the Niskaninnies
After Sarwark’s debate at the SoHo forum and the past three LP presidential nominees, consider that the public at large views “libertarian” as meaning just as hawkish as Democrats and far more than Trump.
Well, yeah. Because there’s no such thing as an “Obama-libertarian” foreign policy.
The Obama-libertarian foreign policy
I…um…what?
Graham really is a dumb motherfucker.
His buddy John told him they were a bunch of “whacko-birds”.
He just really loves blowing up people.
He just really loves blowing

So, Miss Lindsey thinks Obama is a libertarian just because Obama is a different flavor of statist than what he is? Makes sense.
I can claim to fall within six degrees of separation from the original pointy-haired boss.
I worked IT for Company A, which wound up being bought/taken over by company B.
I was a member of the software architect team and one of my colleagues was on a ‘due diligence’ conference call between upper management of the 2 companies.
The question was raised “we’re nearing the end of a software development methodology re-engineering project and we understand you’re going through one as well. How much difficulty can we expect when we merge our efforts?”
VP says “oh, we both hired the same consultant to drive the effort, so it shouldn’t present too much difficulty.”
If he’d stopped talking, I wouldn’t have a great story. But talk on he did: “yeah, the guy used to be Scott Adams boss at PAC Bell.”
OMFG, I worked for not one, but two, companies that thought hiring the pointy-haired boss to help “re-engineer” software development practices was a good idea.
I was gone by the end of the year.

If I was Scott Adams’ previous boss I would suppress that knowledge as much as possible.
The fact that he didn’t indicates that the character of the Pointy Haired Boss is closer to real life than I had anticipated.
Nah, if you were as portrayed by Adams, you’d be boasting about how famous he made you.
Yeah. I was left with the impression that this was not widely known. This VP was a known shit-stirrer who didn’t give a f*ck.
It’s one of two moments from my professional life that I only know through hearsay and would give anything to have been present for.

I mean Kinky, but we try not to shame anyone here.

“Cory Booker: ‘If You Come After Joe Biden, You’re Going to Have to Deal with Me’”
Totally scary, I’m sure that no one will dare now.
After reading SF’s description of how Booker deals with people…let’s just say my cornhole’s gonna be covered!
Oh wait, I get it, he’s saying that he’s buds with Corn Pop and you know, Corn Pop is a bad dude?
Cory Booker emulates Kevin Hart.

I’ve basically become management
When I was 12 I aligned with Yossarian: everything is stupid, bureaucratic, and probably dangerous.
When I was 45 I realized I had become Dreedle: can everyone please just shut up, put on your damned uniform, and fly the mission??11/1!!?
I just realized today that we should not leave Afghanistan, because of all those people who helped us there. We can’t leave because they will be endangered. Also the Northern Alliance helped us and they might be endanger if we left. We need to stay. Forever. There’s no other way
+1 South Korea Status of Forces Agreement
I also realized that we should have never left Vietnam. Look at what happened to the Hmong who were left behind. Sure we could have brought them over here, but still we can’t rescue everyone who is there. We really never should have left. Ever.
Just dawned on me too that we really can’t leave Iraq. We can’t bring back everyone and some of the people that are still there that helped us don’t want to leave, but at this point the only responsible action is to stay forever. That’s a rational position.
American soldiers died. Are you going to make their sacrifice meaningless?
We should have never left the Philippines, Granada, Mexico, Cuba, etc. Never ever ever leave ever.
You: What exactly are we doing in Syria? Assad won. We even funded ISIS to try and topple him and that blew-up in our faces
Me (totally smart and totally an expert): Why do you love Putin, coward?
Hotel California Policy?
If this is in response to me in the prior thread it is not at all what I said. By all means end the wars, all of them, and above all don’t start new ones without forethought. But it is also not a great idea to end them by announcing one afternoon that you are leaving and just shrugging as everyone who helped you gets butchered. Leave the Kurds weapons and make it clear to the Turks that genocide will have consequences (which is how I read that tweet, so I like it).
It was not in response to you or anyone in particular. I’m just realizing how we should never leave any war ever. No matter how illegal, because bad things happen when we leave. Only sunshine and rainbows occur when we invade.
Trump announced withdrawal from Syria in December, though. It wasn’t just this afternoon that it was announced
Seriously, this wasn’t in response to you or anyone.
It is strange though how I don’t remember people being so deferential toward those who were arguing against an Iraq withdrawal because of its impact on the Kurds or Sunnis. I must have missed that “but what about the Kurds” with that one.
Not sure what you are referring to here, but in my case I argued vociferously that we should break off a Kurdish homeland when we left Iraq. I also support Catalan and Scottish Independence, and more “romantic nationalist’ positions. Federations only work if the constituent nations respect each other’s right to local autonomy and existence. (ours may be past its sell by date)
I’m referring to when Obama said he was going to pull out of Iraq (which lasted all of a couple months) the Republican talking point was “We can’t leave. What about the Kurds and the Sunnis”.
It’s weird because I don’t remember a lot of people taking that talking point seriously.
Nah, i doubt he’s attacking you for that.
I thought TGA was being sarcastic.
Yes, but I’m at least partly on the other side than him here. I do believe you have an obligation to protect allies when exiting a war. It is in fact a primary reason I am against us getting into wars in the first place.
What about Afghanistan then? We have allies there that will be endanger if we leave.
Offer them asylum, if they want to stay leave them weapons and whatever guarantees we can negotiate, the world is imperfect, but we have an obligation to do what we can to protect our allies since they are at risk because we asked them to help.
The Kurds were not our allies in that conflict, though, if we’re being honest. We were looking to oust Assad. The Kurds were looking to survive. The Kurds were fighting ISIS. We initially armed and funded ISIS.
We want to paint a rosey picture on what we were doing there now, but the facts are inconvenient. Things have died down in Syria, because Assad won and ISIS was defeated. Us staying there is only going to necessitate some other ISIS type organization to meet our ultimate objective
The best thing we could do for the Kurds would be to stop interfering over there
I guess the question is, at what point do you decide enough is enough? I think you have to draw a cut-off line and say we’re out (see: Vietnam). You can try to negotiate the best possible deal for your allies on exit, but you can’t be there indefinitely.
Just put the Afghans on Medicaid and give them an EITC while we’re at it.
Slate’s Click Bait (I did not click, you can find it if you want it).
Trump Invites a New Killing Field
The president’s betrayal of the Kurds isn’t just immoral. There’s no strategic reason for it.
If it weren’t so pathetic, all the Lefty pro-war propaganda being churned out today would be downright hysterical.
Make Love; Not War.
Be prepared for both.
Si vis sexus, para incellum.
If we were ever going to help the Kurds we would have done it when we invaded Iraq. We should have divided the country three ways – Kurdistan, a third given to the Saudis, and a third given to Iran. But that was never going to fly, ever.
Hence why we never should have gone in there in the first goddamned place.
We should have listened to Joe Biden.
Pre-stroke Joe Biden was occasionally correct.
“We should have listened to Joe Biden.”
Shoot them through the door with a shotgun? I mean, I really can’t remember anything else he’s ever said that anyone could actually understand.
Elizabeth Warren✔
@ewarren
Americans will lose trust in our judicial system if they no longer believe that our judges will be held to the highest ethical standards.
Like the man who appointed him, Brett Kavanaugh should be impeached. #ReclaimTheCourt https://twitter.com/PPact/status/1180877374721789952 …
They really do view the court as simply a political mechanism to get what they want.
Cunte
That should have become obvious when they started threatening to expand it to N+1 justices the next time they had power.
Lessee: Trump, Pence, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, Pompeo, Barr…who’d I miss?
There’s no sugarcoating it, Americans are stupid.
“If you don’t like abortion, don’t have an abortion” is not remotely similar to “don’t like guns, don’t buy one.” It’s more like “If you don’t like murder, don’t kill someone.”
So, about those Clinton appointees…
Or is this an admission RBG is dead?
I mean I don’t like Kavanaugh. His record after this last session seems to indicate he will be a detriment to liberty. But have any of them outlined any reason to remove him other than “Well he was appointed and passed by those icky republicans?”. Everything that they bring forward was known at the time.
I tend to agree that this is about A. Power and B. De legitimizing the Court so the dems feel fine to flaunt any of it’s conservative opinions.
Warren is an actual authoritarian. She would happily schoolmarm us to death.
But have any of them outlined any reason to remove him
Uh, they proved a sexual assault that occurred 30 years ago. #BelieveHer
He didn’t bow and scrape to them. That’s about it.
The problem is, although YOU may not really like Kananaugh, and neither to I for what it worth, it’s for completely different reasons. You probably don’t like him because he’s not always going to interpret the Constitution in the way the founders intended. They don’t like him because they’re not convinced he won’t interpret the Constitution in a way that rubberstamps everything the left wants.
“convinced he won’t”
convinced he will
Warren would appoint Preet to SCOTUS.
*vomits uncontrollably*
Worse than that, she’d appoint both Hillary and Obama. Just how close we are to actually losing our Republic and all our unalienable rights because of a few SCOTUS picks is terrifying.
Oh, we’ve already lost the Republic, it’s just how long we can delay the end; that big-gubmint ratchet only turns one way, and it’s not our way.
Why do you think Mrs. Animal and I are looking at places in Alaska? We want to be well out of the way in case the shit hits the fan in our lifetime.
You’re gonna miss all the fun.
They view everything as a means to an end.
Exactly, a leftist sees themselves as on the right side of history and anything that does not go along with what they see as the right side of history is evil, because they have the moral high ground and can never be wrong. This is never going to change because to ever believe they are wrong about anything destroys the foundation of their entire ideology and they will have no more purpose in life. Everything is about their religion, and it is a religion. Which is why for them, everything is about politics.
ESPN is on in the break room and what I’m getting is protesting the national anthem is free speech, but tweeting that the Chinese government shouldn’t stomp on HK is racist.
AYFKM?
No, why would I be surprised at that? ESPN is owned by Disney and Disney would feed ten thousand kids to alligators to appease the ChiComs.
So you’ve stayed at Disney World?
Our pro-China elites.
Not too long ago, people were mocking Winston for rightly pointing out that our elites will defend the Chinese communists to the end. That’s more true than most want to admit
Why would any leftist be against or even criticize the Chicoms? The Chicoms are their heroes, they started the great revolution, along with the Bolsheviks, which of late has fallen out of favor because Trumputin, or something.
No; we mock Winston because his monomania is tedious.
I thought they were supposed to stay clear of politics.
ESPN personalities talking politics is MSNBC only one level below. Not sure what level is lower than retard. Comatose?
Sub-Moron.
“I thought they were supposed to stay clear of politics.”
Bwaahhahaaahaahaahhaahhahhaaa!
Yeah sure, just like some of my clients who have in their official employee handbooks that employees should not engage in politics at work, yet they churn out political propaganda emailed articles, 24/7, every one of them very left wing.
Of course. ESPN knows where its bread is buttered. The NBA is, by far, the bedrock of their programming.
::ESPN (the “P” is for “Programming,” NOT “Politics”) wades into wokeness::
Sports fans: “C’MON, MAN!!!
Is this even woke, though? Or is China in because Russia is out?
China is in because $$$.
I can’t keep up. Is China woke? They’re not very friendly to gays, Muslims, or dissenters, but they’re “communist”, run by a cabal of technocratic elites, and they tell everybody how to live.
Can it be that the “woke” don’t actually care about gays, Muslims, or dissenters?
If there’s no good signaling to be done, yes, that. Signaling is more of a local things, so sorry gay and Muslim in China, no points to score, sorry.
I believe many of the rank-and-file bougie woke do actually care about gays, Muslims, and dissenters, and I also believe most of them get a rush from the approval they garner for being so caring.
I also believe that they have found themselves caught in a web of competing causes and compartmentalize each identity/cause so they can continue to feel moral.
I remember long ago a strident denizen bordering on troll of the romance novel community tweeted out that she just realized that two of her pet woke causes (which I don’t remember what they were) were mutually exclusive, and she had an existential meltdown on Twitter. It was glorious.
She had also decided that she would give up a romance novel trope she liked because it wasn’t woke. She very loudly struggled with this too, and everyone told her how great it was she was willing to give up that trope after having defended it for years.
So yes, I do believe that many people do care. They just don’t follow the logic all the way through to the end.
Wokeness ain’t got nuthin’ to do with this particular issue.
It’s about ESPN and the NBA making money in China.
See: Hollywood
But, you’ll never see a bunch of progressives protest Xi or get him banned from a college campus. Duly elected Polish, Hungarian, and English Brexiters are not as lucky. I think that says a lot about the moral bankruptcy of wokism
I agree but I was only addressing the original comment about watching ESPN and hearing that “tweeting that the Chinese government shouldn’t stomp on HK is racist”.
Right. My mistake
“China is in because $$$.”
Muh cheap stuff! I gets my gardeners from that Mexico and I gets my cheap stuff from the Chineymen.
“Or is China in because Russia is out?”
Yes, Stalin is now not so cool, because Trump, now Mao is the top hero cool dude again.

UNPOSSIBLE
Everyone knows purely random actions are the only moral ones.

Even if she did, you still participated.
If you are both drunk off your ass, you are both incapable of giving invalid consent, so clearly there is only one correct outcome.
You do hard time for rape.

So, I recently got roped into a Star Wars debate. My two cents are as follows. Does anyone think I’m completely off base?
Our introductory Jedi in the series is Obiwan Kenobi. He literally lies to Luke Skywalker to get him to believe that his father was actually the man who murdered his father. He then proceeds to train the boy in the skills that he would need to exact revenge (and only a moron wouldn’t be aware of that as a likely motivation on Luke’s part). So, our introductory Jedi is a guy trying to manipulate an uneducated farmboy into patricide. The Sith may be evil. But, there’s no way you can say the Jedi are good.
It always struck me as very Greek in structure that way.
I think he meant metaphorically killed his father but he probably should have clarified.
^
“It’s true, from a certain point of view.”
Did Obiwan Kenobi know that Darth Vader was Luke’s father? I don’t remember that part.
What I heard was that Lucas didn’t decide on that plot point until after the Empire Strikes Back (which, as a writer, I can totally believe).
“Did Obiwan Kenobi know that Darth Vader was Luke’s father?”
Yes.
And the Jedi are the unaccountable enforcement muscle of a massive bureaucracy. They probably suck.
This was a huge problem for me in the prequels. I had always imagined the Jedis as similar to Bhuddists/Curtis Sliwa-type Guardian Angels group that would help people however they could and do good deeds, etc.
I never originally thought they were the police force for an Empire.
Did Darth know Luke was his son?
Yes.
Canonically, I think Vader isn’t supposed to figure that out until the end of A New Hope. He thought his children died with his wife in child birth.
When A New Hope was written, Lucas claims Vader being Luke’s father was always part of the story, other sources say that part wasn’t invented until Kasdan started writing Empire. However, in the universe as it stands with the prequels being cannon, ugh, Obi-Wan for sure knew, he’s the one who delivered Luke to Uncle Owen.
Luke spent the entire series trying to redeem his father, once he found out anyway.
And then decided to slaughter his nephew.
“Hey kid, I knew you’re father. He was my best friend. Now he’s Space Hitler. Want to come with me to save your sister you didn’t know you had before your Space Hitler dad kills her?”
Or, as my husband would say, “Plot.”
My point was, I think I’d lie to the kid to.
Well, Leia just makes Kenobi’s lies even more repulsive. Set the boy up as an age-compatible rescuer to a young woman where neither of them are aware a relationship would amount to incest.
So you can train him to kill his dad who you’ve just told is the guy who murdered his father.
Submitted without comment.

The divide in the West is often framed as “nationalists” versus “globalists” which is really not true. It’s better explained as “domestic nationalists” versus “Chinese nationalists”.
So….. I know that the reason is that “It wasn’t legal in North Carolina” but if Congress refused to seat that congressman for vote harvesting, why don’t they refuse to seat the entire Californian Delegation?
To me it would seem that if a process is so bad that it is illegal in some states, and Congress sees its violation as bad enough to not seat the rep for doing it, then any rep should not be seated regardless of whether a state has passed a law to legalize it.
PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE don’t seat the entire California delegation. Can we unseat the whole state government too?
Absent a coup, ballot harvesting is about as naked a power grab as you could possibly make.
How, exactly, do they maintain a chain of custody to show the ballots haven’t been tampered with?
They don’t. Just keep “discovering” ballots in the trunk of cars until you win.
How, exactly do you explain Orange County turning blue, after all the normal red team guys were winning until the harvested ballots were counted? The house was stolen by this bullshit and no-one seems to care.
Polls can point to a problem, but ultimately the only count that matters is the election itself (and don’t they know it). That having been said, this seems pretty transparently broken. Two can play the game, but if it’s a game why bother with ballots? Just announce the result beforehand and save everybody the wasted effort.
Suburbanites are never out of fashion.
The power of “keeping up with the Joneses” is underestimated
Feature, not bug.
How, exactly, do they maintain a chain of custody to show the ballots haven’t been tampered with?
The way they do ballot harvesting in AZ is with mailed ballots. We are so effing stupid that we make it literally impossible to have a defensible chain of custody for ballots. We drop millions of them off in the wild, and assume when they show back up all filled in that it was the named voter who did it. Even worse, in AZ, there is no requirement that the ballot be delivered through the mail. You have people literally bringing in boxes of completed ballots and dropping them off, and all of those ballots are presumed valid.
There’s a couple of variations, as I understand it.
One is just straight theft – they steal them from the Post Office or from people’s mailboxes.
The other is more olde schoole ward: They “help” the elderly, the stupid, people who don’t speak English with their voting.
NY, in its new role as a permanent one-party state, just passed some package of laws to make it “easier” to vote and the usual suspects are tickled pink. Looks like voting by mail is in there. What a fucking joke. I see no point in ever voting again.
How much leeway are the states still allowed anyway with regard to Congressional elections? Originally, the elections were entirely state-level affairs but like everything else the Feds took over and mucked with everything.
Not sure anymore. Candidates have to comply with the Various Campaign Finance laws, and the states have to meet the Voting Rights Act. But congress has always been able to refuse to seat a delegate, as is it’s prerogative. I just can’t see “he broke the law and commited election fraud” compelling if you then seat an entire states delegation despite them all doing what he did, and the justification being “The state made it legal” there.
Who?
“I believe that Trump is trying to do to Joe Biden what he did to Hillary Clinton, that he’s trying to take a public servant that has served honorably over the years and muddy their reputation with false accusations that, in this case, have been investigated,” Castro told Garcia-Navarro.
“I disagree with Vice President Biden on immigration, on health care, as people saw at the last debate, and a number of other issues,” Castro added. “But I believe that he’s fundamentally an honest and honorable man.”
The interview then shifted towards impeachment, and Castro was asked whether he believed “it’s the best thing for the country.”
“Well, I believe the best thing for the country would be not only impeachment, but removal,” Castro replied. “This president has violated his oath of office. He has abused his power. People can read that in that transcript.”
Castro then claimed Trump had used his position as president to “boost himself” and his own interests.
“In unprecedented ways, he has used the office of the presidency to boost himself and put his own self-interest above the national interest,” Castro asserted. “How much more evidence do people need that this man should not be anywhere near the Oval Office?”

This is an old article (and there are others like it) that discusses the reality of our involvement in Syria (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/03/us-isis-syria-iraq). You may be surprised to learn that it never had anything to do with “fighting ISIS”. That is a myth that was created after the fact to justify our continued involvement in Syria. Then orange man ended the program (https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2017/07/25/dem_rep_tulsi_gabbard_president_trump_ended_obama_era_program_which_funded_al-qaeda_in_syria.html) and Assad won.
The Kurds were actually fighting ISIS for their very own survival. The Americans were there to topple Assad. The Kurds achieved their objectives and the US failed.
From the first article:
“On Monday the trial in London of a Swedish man, Bherlin Gildo, accused of terrorism in Syria, collapsed after it became clear British intelligence had been arming the same rebel groups the defendant was charged with supporting.
The prosecution abandoned the case, apparently to avoid embarrassing the intelligence services. The defence argued that going ahead with the trial would have been an “affront to justice” when there was plenty of evidence the British state was itself providing “extensive support” to the armed Syrian opposition.”
AND
“Reports were cited that MI6 had cooperated with the CIA on a “rat line” of arms transfers from Libyan stockpiles to the Syrian rebels in 2012 after the fall of the Gaddafi regime.
Clearly, the absurdity of sending someone to prison for doing what ministers and their security officials were up to themselves became too much. But it’s only the latest of a string of such cases. Less fortunate was a London cab driver Anis Sardar, who was given a life sentence a fortnight earlier for taking part in 2007 in resistance to the occupation of Iraq by US and British forces. Armed opposition to illegal invasion and occupation clearly doesn’t constitute terrorism or murder on most definitions, including the Geneva convention.”
Because trying the intelligence ministers for Terrorisim is out of the question.
That’s actually accurate. Look what happened to John Kiriakou. We was charged with espionage by the Obama administration. But, he was a bad whistle blower or something
Wait, when did Syria get spun as anything other than anti-Assad? That was the whole point, the “red line”, the chemical weapons nonsense, etc.
Mittens and Hillary both said that we “cannot abandon our allies”. ISIS was our ally. Not the Kurds.
Of course that’s inconvenient to the narrative that the US brings sunshine and rainbows to everywhere it intervenes, but reality doesn’t change based upon our ability to stomach it.
Strictly speaking, it was the “Syrian Democratic Forces” that were our “allies” in the fight against Assad. However, the line between that group and terrorists (ISIS being just the contemporary name at the time) was always pretty blurry.
Yes. I remember all the talk about “moderate allies”. The El Nusra front was presented as “moderate”. It’s hilarious how much a foreign policy is just a jumble of lies plastered over with euphemisms.
So Foreign Policy is like my sex life?
*insert thunderous applause gif here*
The Kurds were our allies in Iraq. We betrayed them when we decided under the lightbringer to pretend that the anti-Assad flavor of Islamic State was somehow different than the flavor we had been fighting with Kurdish assistance in Iraq. Again, I agree with leaving. I just don’t like encouraging Turkey to invade, and I think we should absolutely have made North Iraq a Kurdish State when we had the chance. We keep going to war over there, we also keep making sure we don’t piss off Turkey or the Saudis when we go to war. It means we can’t actually achieve anything worthwhile, because Turkey and the Saudis have competing, and not at all benign desires for everything in between them.
The Sunnis were our allies in defeating Al Qaeda in Iraq (the Sunni Awakening). The Kurds had their northern province secure as shit. The Sunnis were getting killed by Al Qaeda there.
Al Qaeda in Iraq then, once defeated, wandered into Syria, but had no arms or support until we started arming and funding them to overthrow Assad (in order to appease the Saudis after the Iran deal).
I think the US taking orders from Turkey and the Saudis is messed up too. That’s why we should eliminate NATO. But, we’re in Syria to appease the Saudis so I’m not sure how our staying there changes that.
I agree with your concern for the Kurds, but there is never a correct time to leave. But in this instance, the US’ actions are so disgraceful that using the Kurds to defend our current policy is disingenuous. And you obviously aren’t trying to do that, but Mittens and the foreign policy “experts” are
Not setting up a Kurdish state in Iraq was a tremendous mistake in my opinion. You don’t get opportunities like that often in world events, but there’s a situation where you had a regional power that could actually establish and maintain security and infrastructure in a region with some assistance. Instead we stuck with the government under Fuckface McShittyballs, aka Nouri al-Maliki.
Asshats didn’t think it through.
Their plan was literally:
Step 1: Invade Iraq
Step 2: Celebrate
Step 3: Everyone in the ME will adopt democracy because Iraq is so wonderful.
Dick Cheney deserves whatever is waiting for him in hell.
Angry quail, with shotguns.
I used to think this way, but now I’m not so sure the Turks wouldn’t have invaded shortly thereafter and commenced what might have become a genocide.
When it became a useful argument
Turkey is bad and the Kurds are good. No disagreement among rational people.
But, the US was never a good actor in that conflict. Now we’re just inventing reality, because the truth is fucked up.
There are two options:
1) US is spreading beautiful freedom to the great unwashed masses.
2) US is an evil colonialist power bent on murdering as many brown people as possible.
Any nuance is not allowed.
I’ll settle for incompetent assholes.
If it’s 1 or 2 or both, I still don’t want US dollars spent there.
Say what you will about killing people with your tax dollars and propping up a terrorist group, but murder and barbarism is about the only thing the federal government excels at

Yikes. Who finds that attractive?
Frida Khalo
No one. No one finds that attractive. We’ve just reached the point because we’re supposed to treat ugliness as beauty because our woke superiors have told us to.
That’s not a woman, that’s a man bab…. well, actually if she’d just go get her brows done, I mean WTF? I’m confused, that looks like a pretty woman with some sort of werewolfe or Brezhnev syndrome going on. Is she doing that shit on purpose? Because that has to be intentional, although I have no idea why.
Because the fashion industry is woke. And woke culture doesn’t believe that women should have to conform to standards of beauty. So, now we’re all supposed to pretend that a woman who lets herself go or doesn’t see fit to groom properly is the epitome of desirability.
Yeah, I get it. But I still have no idea what advantage she believes that bestows upon her. Classic beauty is a great advantage for anyone who has it, and love from the left is something anyone sane should run like hell from.

Bonus points for the meth binge look.
Also: “arrested Friday for having sex and oral sex with a student between April 1 and July 31”
I know teenagers have a lot of stamina, but having sex for four months has gotta be some kind of record.
If your erection lasts over 4 months, contact the Guinness folks immediately.
In the rare case the erection should last more than twenty-four hours, call a friend and brag about it.
“Bonus points for the meth binge look.”
She’s missing the sores all over her face. Must not have the good Balmer meth.
I didn’t see where it says how old the student it. I mean, let’s assume 16. I don’t see any crime here, except her face. If I’m 16, I’m going to be happy to get some milf tail, where’s the victim? Who was harmed? I mean maybe he put a bag over her head. I fail to find a victim here, case dismissed.
Minor + in Loco parentis + position of actual and perceived authority makes for a pretty damned coercive environment, “teenage boys would fuck anything” aside.
We need to start over again, I don’t see a crime. No victim = no crime. Victimless crimes are a big part of the continuing destruction of the Republic.
At what age does it become criminal? 14? 12? 6? 4?
At what point do we cross the line where children can be manipulated by adults in authority positions to believe that they want something that isn’t in their best interest?
Isn’t that kinda the whole point of majority? Minors are categorically considered not experienced/wise enough to handle their own affairs without parental involvement and oversight. Same reason you can void out your 16 year old’s induction into a MLM even though “like, im gonna make millions of dollars”
I think it has to be case by case. Of course if teach is pegging her 6 year old student, that’s a crime. If she’s fucking her 16 year old student, ‘dude, you feel bad because of what happened? No? Case dismissed’.
Disagreed on the case by case part. Like I said, this is the whole point of majority. It’s worth mentioning that I think the age of majority should be 15, but there’s a whole lot of libertopia that needs to happen before it makes sense to go to that.
There’s a third party involved in the 16 year old fucking his principal… his parents. He’s a ward of his family, and unless he decided to get emancipated, they still have a say in how he conducts his business.
That said, if they sign a permission slip for him to boink the principal, the criminal element goes away in my eyes. I still think it’s highly unethical and that the principal should be ostracized from the teaching profession.
@trshy: If you put it like that, it’s a horse of a different color I suppose. If parents are liable for the minor’s behavior, then parents have the final say in that behavior. Which would mean that a minor cannot consent to sexual shenanigans under any conditions, I suppose.
Which would mean that a minor cannot consent to sexual shenanigans under any conditions, I suppose.
The law is a muddled mess on this, but if you can’t deal directly with minors in any other context, I’m not sure why sex would be any different.
I prematurely submitted, but I’ll condense the rest of what I was gonna write.
Sex is clearly treated differently because people become sexually mature between 12 and 16 years old. That’s part of the reason why 18 is a stupid age of majority.
Yeah, in the current environment, there is no way in hell I want 15 year olds voting. (Assuming that’s included under “age of majority”.)
I think the key with sex is that babies can and do happen, and happen more easily when you’re in that sweet spot of sexual maturity, which inconveniently shows up at a young age for some. Which is to say the problem isn’t that little Billy isn’t emotionally mature enough to handle Mrs. Robinson when he’s 15, it’s that if and when he gets her knocked up and she carries the baby to term you wind up with some whacky custody issues.
Eh, I can see both sides of this. People in their twenties and older are sometimes manipulated by people in positions of authority to do things that aren’t in their best interests. People in their teens are expected to have some degree of foresight and common sense, which is why we allow them to have provisional driver’s licenses, work (with a permit), etc. By the same token, you can’t just say, “Well, I was moron until I was 34, so it’s probably fine if that teacher bangs a 12-year-old.” You’ve got to draw an admittedly-arbitrary line somewhere, I think.
My arbitrary line.
Step 1 abolish child labor laws
Step 2 if you are capable of self support you’re an adult
Step 2 rules out more than half of the current adult population.
I’m ok with that.
Yeah, well, 16 ain’t it. Every reasonably normal 16 y/o I knew (when I was 16) had sex. NONE of them were devastated because of it. NONE! If a 16 y/o can’t handle sex with an older woman, he’s been raised by pussy assed parents to be a fucking pussy! Likely, he will become a born again INCEL. Fuck all these pussy assed people!
I like blackjack’s optimism.
I agree that 16 should be old enough to consent, but I think there should probably be a caveat that the age of both parties is a factor. Teenagers are bangin’ each other senseless, and it’s fine. Well, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, but they’re both equally dumb at that age so it’s different than if one half of the equation is 45. I mean, I started having sex a few years younger than that, but it was with girls who’d matured early and were in the market, not with the Acting Arts teacher who used to bum smokes from me between classes.
Like I said upthread, though, it gets complicated because you could arrive at a situation where a baby happens. Then you’ve got a minor parent. A minor parent causes a whole bunch of legal issues, such as who’s on the hook for child support (in most states, the parents of the minor) and who has legal custody of the baby.
NB, It’s the parent’s job to mitigate that, not the prison’s. Anyway’s, odd are way higher that a schoolmate is not protected than a grown assed woman. We don’t ( I’m sorry, SHOULDN’T) use prisons to prevent bad choices. It’s a concrete cell, with yard time next to murderers. No place for a 30 y/o broad who’s hot for 16 y/o boys. It’s fucked up to even contemplate.
I don’t think it should be a criminal offense in and of itself, but when parents send kids to school (which they have to do by law, of course) they ought to be able to expect that no adults are going to try to bang their kids even if their kids are down. Pretty much the definition of “teenager” is “person who enthusiastically and repeatedly makes terrible choices”, and parents, rightly or wrongly, trust schools and school teachers to act in their stead and at least not help them do stupid things. But I mean, I also think you can’t get too worked up when you’ve got teachers graduating college and getting a job at a high school where they’re going to be three or four years older than the “kids” they’re teaching in some cases.
When I was in high school there were two instances of this stuff, neither of which were ever reported and presumably which didn’t have any negative repercussions. In one case, a late 20-something chick who was an art teacher just happened to run into like half the lacrosse team in Ocean City during Senior Week and was seen carrying armloads of booze into their condo, where I’m sure they poured all of it out while singing hymns and then read the Bible until they fell asleep. Rumors that by 11:00 PM they were running train are probably just a misunderstanding.
The other case was a guy who as near as I can tell was some kind of teaching assistant or something. He was in his early 20s and all the girls had a crush on him. It was an open secret that he was banging this one senior. Turns out after she graduated they got married.
She’s probably a lot better looking when she’s not been balling her eyes out over being arrested, fingerprinted, and mugshotted.
Man, if you’re high school aged son is having sex with a teacher, he knows exactly what he’s doing. He ain’t no precious baby being molested. It’s truly disgusting that we put people in prison for having sex with people who are at an age where you could kick them out of your house, legally. If your 16 y/o son will be shattered by sex with an older woman, you are an abject failure of a parent.
I don’t get where this “shattered”, “devastated” test comes from. If you swipe $5 out of my wallet, I’m mildly inconvenienced. Doesn’t make it any less of a crime.
I f she blew me, I wouldn’t be mildly irritated, especially if I agreed to it in the first place. Are you suggesting that we send people to prison for 10-20-life if they mildly irritate us? Nobody gets life, or even 10 years for swiping 5 bucks ( at least not commonly) and nobody would suggest they should.
Sex does not take anything tangible from either party. Unless you claim that it damages them psychologically there is no argument for prosecuting these ‘crimes’, and generally speaking we don’t accept that regret is damage, so some permanent or at least lasting serious psychological harm seems necessary before it makes sense to treat the sex as felonious, I don’t think ‘shattered or devastated’ are inappropriate terms for lasting psychological harm.
True, “shattered and devastated” are both appropriate terms for psychological damage. Sex is not an appropriate term for psychological damage. Prison is not an appropriate sentence for someone who had sex with a person of an age where 75% at a minimum of others have already had sex. To put people in prison for that is sadistic. Period end of story.
I’m not sure it’s the actual sex that’s the issue here. It’s the impropriety of the relationship. She’s a teacher — it’s probably in their guidebooks not to have sex with their students.
“County records contradict @ewarren’s claim that she was dismissed after her first year of teaching because she was pregnant, showing school board unanimously approved a second-year contract”

An injun lied to get what she wants? You could push me over with a feather.
And how!

This is why we really need VR and augmented reality. We need an app that can create every woman who has ever lived in all of history in VR and let you browse all day picking out the ones you want to fuck. Sexbot version coming in 2021!
Humanity will be destroyed by full immersion VR or life like sex robots. It’s really just a race to see which destroys us first. I’m rooting for FIVR.
Come to think of it, this could be the filter that keeps intelligent life from colonizing the galaxy. Sex Bot technology comes before warp drive on the tech-tree.
It would be somehow fitting if we never made it to the stars because we were to busy finding new and interesting ways to fap.
Hey, I’ll get around to finishing up my warp engine just as soon as I finish Teentail 17! I just unlocked the multipenis dlc!
First they laughed at my prediction, now they weep as they fap realizing I was right.
A robofap is so much better if the sexbot is crying.
Disturbing, yet intriguing.
So Winston has been repeating for the better part of six months that, essentially, Western elites will defend the Chinese communists to the death, no matter what. And now the NBA has basically proved his point (and will suffer exactly zero consequences from advertisers for this) and we’re all going to pretend that it’s not disturbing that Winston was right?
I find it more disturbing that you’ve paid any attention to anything he says.
His mom is hot.
the vacuuming in lingerie redhead, yeah
He expresses himself awkwardly but his points are often valid.
I’m pretty sure ‘Winston has been repeating” is just pretense for TGA to harp on his latest hobby horse, because fashion dictates that he does.
I have a friend who is now a consultant in the IC who had called this a year ago. The Chinese own or lease ports all over the world, including a bunch in the US, and because of the nature of the Chinese economy, that really amounts to the PLA owning those ports. They’ve been doing it for decades, but they’ve really ramped up lately.
Bingo
On the flip side, the Chinese are going to eat some serious losses when a global recession kicks in. Port operating expenses don’t disappear when there’s no shipping.
I didn’t pay much attention to anything he might have said about China, but if that’s what he said, I would not have disagreed.
“So I realized, after I spent all day telling other people what I wanted them to do, that even though I still have plenty of actual do-the-work responsibilities, I’ve basically become management. Not sure whether this is going to end with a bender, and whether that bender is going to end with Drano, but….”
Been there. I was reluctant to give up the day to stuff and got reamed for not delegating. Then I delegated and got reamed for not doing enough work. Realized I couldn’t win and checked out til they fired me. I’m not managment material. Hated the meetings and politics and false egos. I just want to work and go home.
Hated the meetings and politics and false egos. I just want to work and go home.
They just laid a guy off in my department in part for expressing to his boss that he was happy in an individual contributor role and had no interest in managing projects. Guy was great at his job, but since he didn’t want a promotion, they canned him for not being ambitious enough.
Is the Peter principle your organization’s mission statement?
Is there a management principle for making it up as you go and not bothering with things like plans and principles?
The Calvin(ball) Principle.
Government
you need a person like that in every department. They probably replaced him with some slick kid who thinks grunt work is beneath him.
Well, that was stupid.
“I’ve basically become management.”
I’m not a spreadsheet guy for the most part. Then, two summers ago, I was excited when I figured out how to create a graph from an Excel spreadsheet (yeah, I know, basic skill). Then, I quickley became depressed that I was excited.
My old boss used to find a way to shoehorn pivot tables and charts into everything. We made fun of him for it.
My boss is always requesting that I change the colors on my Excel charts. He used to work at Microsoft so I just tell him to get his buddies to change the defaults.
every job I’ve had in last 10 years required knowing how to do pivot tables. somehow I’ve never had to use this function, so I just lie now. Pivot tables? I love pivot tables! I make the most beautiful pivot tables you’ll ever see.
Heh they CAN be very useful but yeah I’ve rarely NEEDED to make one.
I used concatenate and my boss thought I was a witch.
I told people you could use the ampersand to concatenate instead of typing out “=concatenate()” and they were stunned. I’m very good at Excel. I just wish it was more powerful and faster.
I never considered myself much of a numbers chick. I did OK, but I was more drawn to the verbal side of knowledge. I was surprised when my SAT Verbal & Math scores were only 10 points apart.
Fast forward many years later, and I discover Excel. I LOVE Excel. My boss (CFO) knows if he asks me to create some sort of spreadsheet, I’ll be happy as a clam. I was never so proud as when I figured out how to set up a nested IF function.
My boss has tapped me to help him lead an Excel training session this week. I will have to work hard to restrain the zeal of the convert.
Just wait until you start playing around with something like Python…
Euphemism? (Oooh! I hope so!)
::DuckDuckGo’s Python:: Oh. So you’re saying I could LEARN TO CODE??
That actually might be fun…
Wait, “learn to code” doesn’t mean have a fatal heart attack?
Python’s really fun. You can do a ton of stuff with it and it’s easy to learn. And it’ll never go away.
I can’t believe how popular it’s become. I remember when it was more niche but suddenly it’s everywhere.
Right? I’m convinced that it’s so popular because the required-indentation-as-flow-control BS inherently eliminates petty squabbles over code formatting in distributed coding projects.
Willfully avoiding Python is getting to be career-limiting for me, but every time I say “okay fine I’ll start writing in Python,” the next thought is “formatting code in columns is for COBOL programmers, fuck this.”
Hmph that’s one of the things I like. I hate noisy punctuation. I only play around with it rarely; haven’t used it for anything serious.
I came up on C, and later, Perl, I like my curly braces.
I will say there is a huge body of modules for Python, you can use it for pretty much anything. Where I work, there is a lot of genomics, bioinformatics and machine learning; a lot of those workflows are in Python.
This.
/built a library to extract all of the data from my excel files into python
Or PowerShell. I built a data integration process in PS but the DBA’s didn’t like it so I had to re-do it in SSIS to make them happy and it took like ten times longer. Sigh.
Nerds.
Hellooooo!
Just booked my ticket here for next March
Scarier than Gibraltar or Hong Kong? Anyway, enjoy yerself!
Badass.
March?!?
Bring a jacket 😉
Actually sounds like a blast. Well done!
That’s cool. Very safe, because Charlie don’t surf.
Hi Tulpa! Wait, that’s not right, is it?
I wonder what the maintenance is on those planes, splashing around in salt water like that?
At any rate, if the weather looks iffy, I’ll skip Barra and stay in Glasgow. My itinerary will not allow for me to get stuck there, as beautiful as it is. I gotta get back to Londinium for some plane spotting and possible flirting.
I went to London, Ireland and Wales. London was the low point, by a wide margin. Next time, I’ll go to Scotland and rural Ireland and just skip the overpriced fish and chips. It was cool to see Churchill’s bunker. They just dropped the pens they were writing with and walked away. It’s EXACTLY as it was on VE day. Pretty cool. I skipped the tower, so I could visit some motorcycle related places, but I did do the bus tour, the lame assed changing of the guard and a performance of the miserable play in a bitchin old theatre.
Shorter, I’d rather get stuck on Barra, than go to London.
This trip is all plane spotting, all the time. I won’t even get into central London, except to transit between London City Airport and Heathrow.
And the person I’m hoping to flirt with won’t be on Barra 😉

strafforism, #1
Free will is suppressing the desire to beat your philosophy professor to death.
strafforism, #2
Lesbians hold grudges forever. They’ve always got an axe wound to grind.
(And these are my two best! Downhill from here!)
Lesbian stoners don’t hold grudges, they lick them in the bud.
Like a stone aged lesbian, a lickalottapus?
well they are women. this woman at work still won’t talk to me and still gives me the stink eye 5 months after the fan incident
You only think you suppressed that desire. You only think you had a philosophy professor. You only think you think. You only think there is a you.
I think therefore I think?
Is I an entity or a process?
I is an imaginary number.
See? It’s fun to make nonsense sound smaht.
+1 climate change. I still can’t get over the pure genius of calling it that. The global cooling thing didn’t happen. the earth stopped warming for about 10 years. people laughed when they said it’s too cold because of global warming. the heat hiding at the bottom of the ocean thing didn’t fly. Every prediction and model: wrong!
presto change-o let’s call it climate change so anything that happens proves we were right all along.
I drink therefore I am
JATNAS called and wants his schtick back.
What happened to JATNAS? Anyone know?
He still pops in from time to time.
Brevity!
