I have begged OMWC to have this morning’s spot. In place of your normal links, you get…The Last Ride (?) of Don Swissxote.
The TRIAL OF TEH CENTURY (Sedition charges against the leaders of the 2017 Catalan Independence referendum) finished up. The announced verdicts were about what was expected. Then things got a bit unruly. Pro-independence groups called a general strike Friday. Here is a slim BBC blurb on that.
So here we are, Catalans. The EU is backing Madrid, of course. Nobody seems to be ready to do anything other than clear a throat or maybe give with a mild “harumph”. It is up to you. Do you want to be independent? You will have to fight for it. And I mean FIGHT. Armed combat. Killing. Property damage. Not protest, strike, and wave banners.
Some of the Basque tried. For over 50 years the ETA waged low level war. They failed…But to me at least, they were a group more “leftist” than “fighting for independence”.
So, will Catalonia take up arms?
I think they will not do so. They have had 2 years to be ready for this day…and not a whole lot else happened. What took place were the actions of a people that prefer independence, in the same manner you prefer a salad dressing. “Oh, its not available? OK, I’ll settle for ________.”
Don Swissxote can hang up his spurs.
“So, will Catalonia take up arms?”
It would cost them dearly, unfortunately and probably not win in the long run.
So, in practical terms how would they do this? Do they just field green irregulars with long guns and start sniping at government? Would they be able to ramp up training in order to have something resembling regulars?
Need logistics and local support of the people.
They could look to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
Is there a people anywhere in this world who may be prepared to do just that, whether to overthrow their government or to break away from one country to form another independent state? Would it have to be a people from a much less well off part of the world – people with much less to lose in tangible terms? I don’t know if Hong Kong is that place – or anywhere in Europe.
Is the age of revolution dead?
Enough with the questions. I’m starting to sound like Judge Nap.
The middle east?
Mebbe. Might the Kurds in general – not just the subset the U.S. has been working with (from what little I know of the situation) – ever get that organized?
They could if they had the help of someone like Swiss E. Lawrence to help them out with arms and a bold strategy.
I’d bet there are people willing to assassinate Boris Johnson to prevent Brexit.
“I’d bet there are people willing to pay someone to assassinate Boris Johnson…”
More likely scenario, I suspect – someone with bucks but not the balls to dirty their own hands, hiring someone who doesn’t give a shit either way but is happy to kill whoever for the right price. Regime change via outsourcing.
That you, Hillary ?
‘Mornin, Tres! Isn’t it a lovely morning in Monkey Co., OH? : )
This is a really great morning. I even made sausage gravy and biscuits for Jugsy.
And AIGS of course.
Biscuits & gravy were not part of my upbringing. (Mom’s mom was German, so that may be why.) Years ago I was working in a daycare center, and we were teaching the kids the days of the week. One little boy could always remember Sunday ‘cuz that was the day they had biscuits & gravy. I figured if they were good enough to help him remember Sunday, I should give ’em a try.
Biscuits & gravy are teh awesome.
Hardee’s has the best biscuits and gravy.
And why did I read that in the voice of Clevon Little in ‘Blazing Saddles’ ?
Timor-Leste would like to have a word.
Thanks for that! Vaguely remember “East Timor” mentions in the news, but had forgotten what little I knew.
It always seemed that East Timor breaking away from Indonesia was OK by UN standards because this was brown people sticking it to the brown people who had previously stuck it to the Dutch. Enemy of our enemy being our friend and all that. It’s OK when it’s other people but inside the EU family we’re all supposed to be towing the wyppipo lion.
About all I remember is that East Timor was one of Noam Chomsky’s favorite hobby-horses.
Needz moar TDS!
Even if I were so inclined, I wouldn’t bestir myself that much on a Saturday morning. I’m all about the indolence and sloth, baby!
Indolence and sloth are fine hobbies, at least for the weekend. Maybe follow up in the afternoon with some imbibing of fine spirits?
‘Round these parts, Saturday afternoon is for napping. Woke up early this morning, but with a nap under my belt and an as-yet-uncorked bottle of rose (still can’t do that accent aigu thing. Screw it!) in the fridge, I may be up for the late night Glibbing.
Yeah, I’ll m on your schedule. Will need a nap after last night’s imbibing.
Mister Napolitano. He’s no longer a judge.
He may no longer be sane either.
“Is there a people anywhere in this world who may be prepared to do just that, whether to overthrow their government or to break away from one country to form another independent state?”
Only in the USA, no one else has any guns.
The Catalans won’t do jack, at least on a large scale. They’re comfortable and have too much to lose just like most places in the West.
That’s how I see it. I grew up in a place and environment of threats of separation and have heard all the reasons and excuses for it. I’ve heard Catalans and other secessionist leaders come speak to Quebec (remember this is where that meddlesome loud mouth De Gaulle screamed ‘Vive le Quebec libre’.
Never accepted the reasons. It was all romantic with some objective reasons mixed in to make it appear like it’s worth the hassle. My impression has always been the leaders of these movements are more romantic than realistic.
Like Quebec. Way too good they have it.
All this ‘national identity’ talk is cute until the wallets are hit.
“D’accord, laisse le. Non? Alors ferme la gueule.”
Lol.
Tabernak.
Could they pull a soft revolution? One where people just stopped paying taxes as they no longer recognize the old government. It’s hard to arrest a whole province.
They’re comfortable and have too much to lose just like most places in the West.
This. Compared to most of the world, its pretty nice in Spain.
Another form of rebellion giving authorities the vapors
Note the Newspeak name of the welfare office, two words deliberately joined up into one with the ultimate intention of getting people to think less about what the organization does.
Yup. “Department of Social Protection” sounds so warm & fuzzy. Who could criticize that?
I can’t even think of a non-euphemism for welfare. Living expense transfer payments?
Wealth redistribution?
Free shit (here)
Gettin’ paid, yo?
Alms
I see they haven’t installed the Social Credit ATM yet, so that’s good…so far.
A sign was placed… sorry-not-sorry was expressed….
Way to own up, there, IreGov.
Do you not want to pay an extra four cents [Ed.: about three percent] to ride the subway?
It looks like that isn’t what kicked it off so much as the straw that broke the camel’s back.
The free shit is too damn not high enough!
In 1970, Quebec and Canada got a glimpse of what a fight could look like when the terrorist group the FTQ wanted to spark a violent revolution for independence. They killed a politician (Pierre Laporte) and Pierre Trudeau (the smart one) invoked the War Measures Act – martial law – sending the army into the streets of Montreal.
I think people at that point said, no thanks. Even though the spill over did lead to the election of the Parti Quebecois (there have always been nationalist parties in Quebec) in 1976. On average, 25% of the population support the PQ/independence. But that’s not enough to leave Confederation.
I mean, Canada is the most docile, weak Federation in all of the West. Quebec is essentially autonomous so at this point it’s just a cherry on top they’re looking for.
This is the most famous moment in Canadian history when Trudeau said ‘just watch me’. Hence his legend grew. You have to understand, up to that point no Canadian leader ever stood up for Canada. When Trudeau did so, Canadian pride surged.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeTsQQ22Uwc
Sorry. Don’t mean to hijack. I just see similarities between where I live and Catalonia.
Let me rephrase. One of the most famous moments in history. No PM ever spoke this way up to that point.
Let them ride helicopters!
Today in identity politics derp:
Followed by lots of anguish from the usual suspects over how toxically white and male the department is. This stood out:
(Wo)man, how hard is that test?!
Please jump over this poll: It’s two feet high. YOU’RE IN!
I can’t find anywhere in the article that tells how many women pass the physical exam. Because of course, there’d be no downside to lowering the physical standard to become a firefighter./sarc
This is how the Leftist view of gender equality is seriously harmful. Military, police, and fire departments have already had lower standards for women for years. They act like it’s a big sexist conspiracy to keep women out, but it’s there because those jobs require a certain level of physical fitness so that people don’t die.
It’s just a biological fact that all other things being equal, a man is going to be stronger than a woman. It shouldn’t be remotely controversial to have physical standards and accept that more women are going to flunk out. It’s fucking clown world.
Of course, some departments/agencies have responded by lowering the physical standard for both genders, so now they’re admitting unfit men in addition to unfit women. Just doubling down on the wrong.
If that phrase makes me puke, does that make me a bad person?
That’s not what makes you a bad person. :-p
“I’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way.” (Hmmmm….change avatar to another redhead?)
The cops call themselves “The Finest”.
You’re welcome.
Is the cutoff the minimum acceptable score and the percentage invited just the FDNY saying we have X slots so we invite the top X passing candidates?
Yeah, that makes some sense. Plus some extra to account for the number they expect to fail the physical test.
It’s almost like sloppy reporting or something leads to questions like these.
Media types are just intelligent enough to sound good to the masses, but not intelligent enough to actually do their job.
Moreover, commenting on the ruling, which condemns the leaders of the ‘Catalan process’, the former Catalonian President also hit out at the EU for its role .
Mr Puigdemont accused the EU of “shutting up” in the face of the violence that was seen on October 1, 2017.
He added: “This Europe dances to the sound of the Spanish State, which prevents the representatives of more than two million European citizens from sitting in the European Parliament.”
Uhh…. if the EU takes the Catalanians’ side, that might set a bad precedent with things like Brexit.
How can the EU side with Catalonia? It’s busy consolidating national sovereignty into Brussels. Makes no sense for them to do so.
It’s as if we form a North American Union with all power funnelling into, say, Baltimore (Side Show Bob shudder) and then allowing for Quebec to leave.
Defeats the purpose of a union.
Exactly, you just can’t have people leaving. The peasants might get uppity.
I should add the last referendum we had in 1995 was extremely nerve racking. It left a really bitter mark on some, anxiety on others. To this day even.
I don’t think people appreciate the angst it produces. And this is in Canada where we don’t really have a history of political violence outside some rebellions but not in the 20th century anyway. You felt it in the air. It was truly not knowing if Canada was gong to cease to exist.
I wouldn’t recommend it.
It was truly SURREAL not knowing Canada was GOING. But gong could work because listening to nationalists, they do sound like they belong on The Gong Show sometimes.
The Fourth Reich isn’t going to let people just walk away.
And I mean FIGHT. Armed combat. Killing. Property damage. Not protest, strike, and wave banners.
What would NATO do?
I don’t think NATO could do much at all.
The US, on the other hand . . .
This does sound just like the kind of internal conflict with no particular US interest at stake that we just love to stick our dick in, though.
I’d accept some female Catalonian refugees.
It would be nice if they would just stick their own dicks in, and leave the rest of ours alone. Pricks.
Fight, whilst the CIA armed the Catalans
Swiss, would you support Quebec independence?
Just curious.
It would be good for the rest of Canada to get rid of the apartheid state in its midst.
I asked the question in all sincerity if anything to see if people see a difference between Catalonian and Quebec independence.
After the latter, is in our own backyard and would have bigger implications for the USA particularly border states in New England and NY. Regionally, Quebec is a big player.
I’ve never been to Quebec but I have spent a couple months in Catalonia and while it was decades ago, I saw (for example) no evidence of the sort of language issues I have heard about from Quebec. Everyone speaks Spanish. Some speak Catalan. Everything ‘official’ or commercial is bilingual.
So bottom line, I came to the conclusion that, if anything, Catalonia seems more “integrated” into Spain than Quebec does into Canada.
Just a hot-take.
I agree. Quebec is childish and immature when it comes to language.
They refuse to put up road signs in English even though it’s a safety issue. But here, language is political. So you’ll see French signs in Vermont, NY and Ontario but none in Quebec.
Who is more mature?
That is no English signs in Quebec.
They (rightly) assume that if they allow you to use the language of your choice English will win out. They (wrongly) assume that this is a bad thing.
One exception: the signs pointing to the U.S. border say “USA.” But it’s for American visitors .
Jarflax, yes they are. And which is why I don’t mind the efforts to protect it. But not when it’s punitive.
Grizzly, don’t follow. They have literal signs miles after the border in VT/NY and in Ontario I see them all along right until Niagara Falls.
I was saying that in Montreal the signs say USA instead of Les Etats Unis for the directions to the US border. Americans wouldn’t understand the latter.
Whenever I hear talk about some sort of American split, I ask myself what happens to the people on the wrong side? What do the Pacificafornians do with their rednecks and deplorables? Do they forcibly evict them from their land and expel them into the desert? Expropriate their stuff?
Same question for Catalonia.
It is unlikely they would have to expropriate them. They will take their stuff. That is SOP.
See Partition of India.
They never talk about this. For years we tried to ask the nationalists specifics. The answer is ‘don’t worry. It’ll work itself out. Canada will comply’ etc.
But that’s not enough. It’s a COUNTRY you’re breaking from. People and their lives are at stake.
Why I never took Quebec separation seriously is because their demands were: They would still be a part of the military , keep the Canadian passport and dollar, not pay its portion of the debt and maintain Canadian bonds. Basically, they were like the teenager who wanted to live on their own but expected the parents to pay the rent.
It got so dopey some guy wrote, ‘White Niggers of America’.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Vallières
The author has since denounced the book.
They laughably said the rest of Canada would have no choice in the discussion and just come to the table and eat their pride. As for how the United States figured into all this, only one book, as far as I know, was written about how they would react. Incidentally, by a nationalist Jean-Francois Lisee titled, ‘In the eye of the Eagle’. Rumours had it that the U.S. mobilized a military unit on the Vermont border in 1995.
As for our economy, we’re a ‘have-not’ province and not as diversified as we should be. So off the top we’re batting with one hand.
The other angle is my family owns stuff here. The uncertainty is a killer. It’s easy for someone in Alberta to say ‘fuck them let them leave’ but for me it’s a little harder. I would leave Quebec but how do I take properties with me? Already property values here are among the lowest in Canada. I wonder if there’s a Catalan equivalent to me. Someone who doesn’t think it’s a sound move because of our predicament.
These are serious questions. I couldn’t care less about cute girls waving flags. Shit is real.
I forgot to mention that in Quebec there’s the belief that if Quebec leaves. Then Montreal will secede from Quebec. Never mind the Natives want absolutely nothing to do with Quebec; especially the prosperous and capitalist Cree who kick ass.
The Natives tolerate Canada but loathe Quebec for some reason.
These are also questions the nationalists won’t answer. What will you do if violence erupts? Send the police? The SQ? These are police forces; not riot armies trained for political unrest.
I’ve gone on long enough. Just trying to add some poutine to this.
The partition of India involved ethnic cleansing because of religious hatreds. I don’t see ethnic cleansing if Quebec or Catalonia (or California) secede. Why wouldn’t you be able to keep your property, rent it, sell it at an acceptable price, whatever?
I think, to some extent, it would be ‘business as usual’.
The property we’d hold, but we don’t know what would have happened to the value of it.
Not sure I follow the question in the sense that if Quebec seceded, our economy is tied to Canada and if we ceased using the dollar, what would happen to costs, inflation, prices etc.?
Thankfully, it never came to that. However, a theory little talk about is part of the reason why Quebec real estate lags IS BECAUSE of the constant political uncertainty.
My family sold a property in the heard of Montreal (Jean-Talon market) that would fetch five times the price in Toronto.
Montreal and Toronto were once 1 and 1A Alpha males. Now, Montreal is a beta since 1976.

I’m sure all of those would be leaving on their own.
Mo, just saw your reply about your Vicky friend. His novel looks interesting; wish-listed.
Yay!!!
Speaking of casting out demons
Gay rights campaigners called for a boycott of Chick-fil-A, which opened its first branch at The Oracle shopping centre in Reading on 10 October.
A spokeswoman for the centre said “the right thing to do” was to not extend the restaurant’s lease beyond the “six-month pilot period”.
Chick-fil-A said its donations were purely focused on youth and education.
The family-owned company, founded in Atlanta in 1967, is one of the biggest fast-food chains in the USA and boasts about 2,400 outlets across North America.
According to US news website Think Progress, in 2017 the Chick-fil-A Foundation donated millions of dollars to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Paul Anderson Youth Home and the Salvation Army.
Campaigners from LGBT organisation, Reading Pride, said all three organisations have a reputation of being hostile to LGBT rights.
Keep it up, assholes.
The good people of Reading are better off without that tainted blood-chicken anyway.
Aren’t these allegations that they paid a lawyer baseless? But Snopes tried to cover for them?
Fake news. No business is moving into a shopping mall in 2019.
“Speaking of casting out demons

Chick-fil-A must be prepping for windfall profits next quarter. Are we sure this isn’t an inside job?

I made this last night.
Lol. That’s great:)
A comment by westernsloper was the inspiration.
Jones’ comment was actually loosely based on facts and was hyperbolic, Clinton either actually believes the Russia nonsense or she’s cynically using it because she thinks the Dem rank and file are stupid and uninformed enough to buy it. She’s a horrible person whatever the case may be.
Clinton doesn’t have any beliefs or principles. It’s all an act.
“cynically using it because she thinks the Dem rank and file are stupid and uninformed enough to buy it.”
Yeah. There are a lot of Dems who believe the Russian narrative.
Don’t disagree. But to Clintonistas, Jones is an insane conspiracy mongerer and to compare her to him would pop blood vessels, I suspect.
I wasn’t knocking your meme BTW, I liked it just fine.
Love it!
Then you;re really going to enjoy the image in this Babylon Bee article.

“Update from @merica: when asked if the former secretary of state was referring to Gabbard, Clinton spox Nick Merrill said, “If the nesting doll fits.”
“This is not some outlandish claim,” Merrill added. “This is reality.””
Ok it’s one thing when Hillary says these things. She’s insane. But then to go along with it and act like everyone else is insane for calling it out? That’s evil.
Gab are should sue for defamation. It was stated as a fact, not opinion.
Now to watch the Clinton water carriers and hangers on come out of the woodwork to cover for this obvious bullshit while by accusing the noninsane of being Putinistas. They’re disgusting, the lot of them.
We’ve gone from “everybody who disagrees with me is Hitler” to “everybody who disagrees with me is Putin’s puppet”. Ah, the party of science. Remember when reality had a “well known liberal bias”?
I wonder how many of them actually believe this rather than being afraid to speak up and say it’s nonsense in public? It can’t be that many can it?
The rabid dominate the discussion now, that’s for sure. Getting reasonable arguments out there is a lot more difficult than agreeing with or ignoring the crazies.

I hear bitching from hourly people about so and so is an overtime hog and he’s just milking yet. I just internally roll my eyes. Yeah, ok, maybe they are milking it. But what about the first 40 hours, including standing around complaining about the milker? My estimate is even with overtime, it’s cheaper than another person’s base wages plus benefits.

That’s the question. There are a lot of Democrats in Jesusland America, with homes, businesses, roots; what do they do? Take pennies on the dollar to go live on the street in Salinas, California?
*I contemplated making some sort of hokey wordplay juxtaposing Salina, Kansas and Salinas, California, but refrained.
Why would their property be worth pennies on the dollar? Why would they have to sell?
That’s what I’m asking. I have no problem with Californians or New Yorkers. I just don’t want Washington DC ruling like an autocratic dictator.
I’ll say it again: America’s division is not between states; it’s between the cities/suburbs and rural areas. Nobody’s going to divide that.
^^^This.
In broad generalizations:
City: Ethnic minorities and white uber-woke squad.
Suburbs: Soccer mom safety obsessed. Beyond that, whatever’s fashionable.
Rural: F-150s, gun racks and Don’t Tread on Me flags.
Maybe. The thing is some of that cutters are clearly culturally more conservative than liberal. Take Boise or SLC for example. The cities are liberal, but not nearly as much as east coast
The state borders are anachronistic. Their only saving grace is they don’t change, which makes the Senate impossible to gerrymander. While I think there is a real rural/urban divide, it isn’t the only geographic division that has cultural weight. Get outside of the DC metro area, and attitudes change significantly, even in urban areas.
Sure, but I do believe the urban/rural divide is more significant than any regional divide. *shrugs* It’s all silly speculation anyway.
I might just be wearing jade-colored glasses, but everytime I get away from central Maryland, I find people to be a lot friendlier and a lot less crazy.
Some of this is probably tourist bias. I live in central Maryland; when I visit other states (PA, OH, IN), I’m a tourist, not a resident.
Anecdotally . I live in Ohio and when I have been in MD I was a tourist, and I found MD people to be crazy rude assholes. Honestly I had better experiences in Jersey than Maryland. The people in Jersey were rude in that sort of comradely rude to your buddies, but with a smile and welcoming you to be rude back. The people in Maryland, especially Baltimore, very clearly meant their rudeness.
If they know you’re a tourist, they resent the fact that you get to leave MD.
Yeah, it’s sort of like that. Which is why when you get out of Baltimore City or West of South of Annapolis, you may as well be in a different country. It goes from deep blue to deep red in a matter of a few miles. The only reason any of these states are blue is because most of the population is in the cities. Wife and I were hanging around a couple counties over from here today, it’s ever nice there, beautiful, nice people, tranquil.
It made me thinks of something. Let’s one up the electoral college and make it by county within each state, so that if you carry the most counties in a state, you win the state. Can you even imagine the epic freak out from the left?

That still should not be illegal unless she raped him, which I seriously doubt any half way decent looking woman would have to do to any 16 year old boy, I mean if he likes women. I don’t see any abuse there. Kid to an extra Christmas and Birthday this year.

Rampant misogyny
“The thing we know for sure is that Hillary Clinton is a Donald Trump asset,” Amash, a vocal Trump critic, tweeted late Friday. “Hillary does — and did — drive many people into the arms of Donald Trump. Her attack on Tulsi does likewise.”
———
Clinton on Friday warned during a podcast interview that Russia was poised meddle again in the next U.S. presidential election through online disinformation efforts, and she said Moscow could attempt to sow chaos by encouraging a third-party candidate.
“She’s the favorite of the Russians. They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her, so far,” Clinton said in an apparent reference to Gabbard, who has faced unfounded speculation that her campaign is being amplified by bots and online trolls.
Gabbard later Friday unleashed an attack on the former secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, calling her the “queen of warmongers” and the “personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party.”
“From the day I announced my candidacy, there has been a concerted campaign to destroy my reputation. We wondered who was behind it and why. Now we know — it was always you,” she said, challenging Clinton to join the primary instead of “cowardly hid[ing] behind your proxies.”
Good response from Gabbard. Don’t take that shit from her.
Nice. I like Amash’s response. Though I think it’s a bigger boon for Tulsi than Trump.
I’m waiting for “As a woman who actually has dodged sniper fire…”

Race war averted
Firearms belonging to the suspected leader of a neo-Nazi group who was thought to be preparing for a “race war” have been seized under a “red flag” law in Washington state, according to court documents.
Authorities removed five rifles, three pistols and other gun components from Kaleb James Cole, 24, under a state law that allows authorities to take guns from people deemed to be a risk to themselves or others for up to a year, authorities said. Cole has not been charged with any crime.
Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes believes the seizure, which court documents indicate happened Sept. 26, may have prevented a massacre.
“This is a hate-filled human being, but unfortunately one who possesses really alarming numbers of weapons,” Holmes said.
Alarming numbers of guns. Hateful. Scary. Unmutual.
People like this must be ground to paste by the benevolent agents of the precautionary principle.
Who the fuck knows, the guy might really be one meaningless slight from gunning a church full of black Southern Baptists (or one parking ticket away from bombing City Hall), but I do not trust the Red Flag Brigades one bit.
Five rifles and three pistols is “alarming numbers of weapons”?
He was going to start a war with those, lol.
Anyone who thinks 8 guns is an “alarming” number is there to squash your rights, not protect the community.
Nothing to see here, citizen – move along.
“It isn’t a crime, he’s not being charged, he’s not in jail … it is a way to slow things down.””
Seems like a slam dunk for his lawyer on conspiracy to deny civil rights.
Yes, it’s a way to slow things down until you can actually take everyone’s guns. We get it.
3 things to note:
1) The guy is a piece of shit, but there is zero evidence in the poorly written article that he had committed a crime or was about to.
2) The paper did not allow comments on the article.
3) This article was on the front page, top right corner. The same day as the antifa protester that brought a gun to the Trump rally was arrested. The antifa protester article was not in the paper.
“Death Threat”

Remember when Internet death threats were recognized as the low-effort emotionally stunted inconsequential nothing they still are?
^^^Clearly a racist, Nazi, hate-criminal.
Remember when the Daily Beast wasn’t a cesspool of clickbaity derp?
(Actually, I’m not sure if there ever was such a time but roll with me here.)
em>”So, that was enough to convince this judge that at least temporarily — let’s take a time out. Let’s take these guns out and see what we’ve got here,” he said. “It isn’t a crime, he’s not being charged, he’s not in jail … it is a way to slow things down.”
Thought crimes require special procedures.
Nothing is going to calm things down like disarming people for vague and specious reasons.
It really didn’t take long for these (already unconstitutional) laws to start being abused.
“Abuse” was the purpose from day one, and everybody not wearing their “bipartisan compromise” glasses knew it.

Fool me twice… Damnit !
Speaking of succession, I think it is a super long shot, but I support the creation of the State of Jefferson. Of course, this succession would be from Caliunicornia, not the US. Every time I go up north or to the Sierras I see plenty of large signs, banners, and stickers supporting it. I think the only way it would stand a chance of happening would be if Puerto Rico became a state. There is something about 51 states that wouldn’t sit right with people, and of course the two Team Blue Senators would need balance with of the SoJ Team Red (or maybe libertarian, it is a liberty focused movement) in order to pass Congressional approval. I would love to have an option to move to that offers more liberty. I’m a native Californian, and don’t really want to leave this state because of all the fuckheads who moved here over the last several decades and seek to make it into commieville. I’d buy land there in a heartbeat if I thought succession was going to happen. It’s gorgeous up there.
Yes, it’s really beautiful up there. I’d move up there too if I thought they had a chance.
It’s economically fucked due to all the regulations and purposeful killing of livelihood there from the greenies that live in El Lay and Ess Eff. I think that would change for the better under self rule. I have a friend who moved to Nevada City this past year and is trying to convince me to move there. It’s tempting, but I don’t want to be a weed farmer, and I have three little kids to support.
It’s really sad what has happened to this state in my lifetime. It was an absolute paradise and a beacon of opportunity at one point. You used to be able to build a house here, now the amount of fees, permits, taxes and bullshit make it prohibitively expensive.
After visiting the UP of MI a few weeks ago, I could get behind them becoming their own state, but I gather they’re too dependent on Lansing for that to happen any time soon. Too bad. They don’t deserve That State Up North (sez the Buckeye.)
Is there an independence movement up there? They’ve been trying to bring about the Jefferson since the 1940’s here, with the last decade or two ramping up the efforts. They have to get permission from the proggunists that run this place though, and I can’t see that happening. They are just fine with the status quo.

Per WikiP,
Linky thing. I’d still prefer the name “Yoopertopia.”
Love the name.

PS. nothing says “diverse” like being canceled by a mob of people of various hues.
Ha! Nothing says “liberal” like forcing you to stay when you want to go. I’d imagine that if put to a vote up there, it would stand a very good chance of passing (not that that would do much good).
As you mentioned, why would they give up being able to lord their power over people? Politicians are in it for power. Full stop. Any lens through which we view succession has to be viewed this way otherwise is it’s just delusion.
They need a port.

We’ll tax our way to prosperity
Chicago is considering sticking ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft with a new tax that would add a few bucks onto each ride. Mayor Lori Lightfoot has proposed a $40-million-per-year tax increase as part of a broader traffic plan modeled after London’s famous congestion fines. That means not all rides would be subject to the same fees, but each trip taken within the city would still cost a little extra.
While congestion charges are all the rage in Europe, they’re uncommon in the United States. New York City recently decided to financially penalize every driver taking a trip below 60th Street (something I’m not thrilled about), positioning Chicago as the second major metropolitan area in the U.S. to move forward on congestion fees. Lightfoot claims it’s a necessary first step “to improve mobility and further our goals of ensuring sustainable, affordable and reliable access to transportation options in every neighborhood.”
Currently, Chicago mandates a flat 72-cent fee per ride. According to Crain’s Chicago Business, the new congestion pricing would tack on a minimum of 53 cents a trip — with some trips downtown adding as much as $3.00. Some of the revenue would be diverted into the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) to establish priority bus zones on the South and West sides. Higher fees could also encourage residents to take public transit more often, especially for trips downtown.
And you can spend the money on
schoolsfree daycare.I seem to recall that congestion fees were pitched as a way to encourage ride sharing…
I don’t see that flying in any American city besides NYC which is I believe the only one where a majority don’t own a car.
Where’s Evan from Evansville?
Festus, hope this finds you well on the recovery path. Hospitals aren’t always our best friend.
