Sort of last-ish minute fill in for links. We hope the variety of linksters we have had parading through this week has both confused and delighted you. If not, too bad. You are stuck with me this morning. God help you all this afternoon, if this keeps up.
But enough of that – you are here to comment. These here links are sort of your excuse to do so:
- I am quite sure this will turn out well. Maybe Bernie can take a second honeymoon. “The North Korean leader compared the site to the Mt. Kumgang tourist area, which he visited on Wednesday and ordered the removal of all the “unpleasant-looking” facilities that had been built by South Korea.”
- Man, the House of Windsor has been laid low. I guess with that jug-eared dolt for a father, and the vacuous mother, this shouldn’t be so much of a surprise.
- The only reason I am linking this story is due to the headline. That has to be the best part of the job at the paper…”remember, if the headline doesn’t make people do a double take, you have failed!”
- ““The fourth plenum will implement reform plans, and they will talk about how to improve governance, which is pressing”. No, silly Glibs, this is the CCP, not the TEAM BLUE or TEAM RED conventions!

Harry’s dad doesn’t seem to have jug ears. I did always think his mom was kind of a tramp and hugely overrated in terms of looks and brains.
Yeah, that’s got to be his dad, same facial features and hair.

I don’t think Angelina Jolie is that attractive. There, I said it. #hottake.
She used to be, but then she lost too much weight. A woman needs a healthy amount of jiggly stuff in the right places.
Her crazy made her unappealing well before the drastic weight loss did.

Meghan told guests: ‘In terms of gender equality, which is something I have championed for a long time, I think that conversation can’t happen without men being a part of it.
Men must be brought into the conversation to confess their sins and abase themselves.
Let’s see, gender equality. Hmmm, well I guess we’ll include the men. Sure, why not.

Just a ponder (probably not a noun but who cares) not a sermon… The earlier Letterkenny stuff made me think I should go beyond youtube and see some episodes. This can go two ways. I can either enjoy them or find them boring and realize all the funny parts are in the youtube highlights. But it is on hulu which is not available in advanced nations like Romania.
My usual go to to this is just torrent them. And thinking this, I realize I did not really torrent much in the last two years and no longer know any reliable torrent sites. How the mighty have fallen.
There was significant crackdown on torrents in the odd last 5 years or so, so there are fewer and fewer reliable trackers, if any. But the situation reminded me of back in the day when I always had 6 or 7 tracker sites off the top of my mind. For most of my torrenting days I think isohunt was my main one, with piratebay and a couple more as backups. Back when isohunt went down it was a period of panic for me. I don’t remember what I replaced it with, but went through several in a few years until I mostly stopped torrenting altogether.
For the early part of my torrenting days I used azureus client, until I switched to μTorrent.
In the age of BT, before torrent, were the wild days of dc++. Which had the disadvantage that if you started downloading from someone sharing, you had to finish download from that person. I had a cinephile friend who was into obscure movies, and there were special dc++ membership only channels where you could get them from people like him. Some of the bastards generally guarded their rarities and did not want to share more than necessary to remain part of groups. I remember some movies taking months to download, catching the host a little bit here and there, and maybe today maybe next week.
Anyhoo I will look for some Letterkenny and probably the latest season of Always sunny when it appears or if.
Thief.
I prefer the term libertarian agains the concept of intellectual property
I think a lot of the death of torrents is due to digital copies being made available at reasonable costs. FFS, you can buy a season of most TV shows for less then the cost of a music album. That’s not counting the streaming services (including the free to watch ones), sales, and discounts.
That is part of it but there was a crackdown
There was, but that’s one of the problems with using the BitTorrent client for piracy. The websites providing lists of trackers was always vulnerable. I know a couple of the ripping groups had private lists and the like that may still be active that would list their new releases.
I also wouldn’t trust anything downloaded from those sites anymore.
You need to start numbering them.
Fun fact – I cut that out the day I got the letter in the mail from Gillespie telling me that Preet was looking for me (but not why – I didn’t learn why for days).
Please tell me you have that framed.
Dude, I was freaked out for like a month, not knowing what the hell was going on. I have no idea where it is or if I even saved it.

Now, if she stopped trying so hard, maybe took that stupid piercing out of her nose and cleaned up a tad I think she’d be attractive. The problem is that for some reason a lot of these girls don’t seem to have a sense of dignity. They just look like drunk tramps–a friend’s wife refers to them as “cum dumpsters”–which isn’t attractive, or at least not in the same way as, say, Myrna Loy from upthread. Or Claudette Colbert. Or Catherine Deneuve. Or, actually, Angelina Jolie in her modern incarnation, much as she reminds me of a grumpier version of any of my aunts.

The board admin. Depending on the site it was usually cracked games, pr0n, or virus writing tools.
I used to keep a directory of porn and shareware games specifically for that purpose. No other, of course.
I remember Delft University had the best pr0n, but you had to download each picture in parts and then stitch the parts together before you could look at the picture.

Special K: It’s improper to investigate potential corruption when it involves Team Blue
Klobuchar said, “We have an incredibly important investigation going on right now, and the facts are there. … That’s going on. And so, I am supposed to believe at the same time, that this is just a fluke that the Justice Department would decide to bring this case, and bring at least this investigation, which, as you point out, under their standards, it has to have a factual basis. It can’t be a hunch. It specifically says that’s insufficient. And to me, the president has repeatedly called for going after his opponents, so many arrows here point toward this being politically motivated and some kind of abuse of power.”
It is just a meaningless distraction

These reports, if true, raise profound new concerns that the Department of Justice under AG Barr has lost its independence and become a vehicle for President Trump’s political revenge.

@RepJerryNadler
If the Department of Justice may be used as a tool of political retribution, or to help the President with a political narrative for the next election, the rule of law will suffer new and irreparable damage.
Yeah, I was concerned when Barr said he was Trump’s “wingman”. Or am I thinking of someone else?
Since when was it supposed to be “independent”? It’s a part of the executive branch, and the President is head of the executive branch. The courts have independence (of the executive branch), not the executive branch’s own agencies.

Nah, had to have been Barr and Trump.
The Dems have lost their minds. I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that this is part of their schtick to delegitimize anything Barr’s DoJ does that might implicate high-level Dems. The problem is once you attack the institution and tell people “it’s bad, mmkay?” you’re not simply going to be able to tell people it’s all good when you’re in charge. People are dumb, but they know and recognize hypocrisy. The Team Blue hacks will go along with anything, but I don’t think this will end well.

Poll: 51% of Americans are retarded and/or hate freedom.
Depressing new data from the Campaign For Free Speech. No wonder those two idiots at UConn face criminal charges for saying the N-word: Although it’s unconstitutional under the law we have, it wouldn’t be unconstitutional under the law most Americans wish we had, apparently. No fewer than 52 percent in this poll thought that government should have the power to restrict the views and speech of “racists.”
CFFS asked people if they agree with the statement, “The First Amendment goes too far in allowing hate speech in modern America and should be updated to reflect the cultural norms of today.” Not only did a majority agree, but a strong majority of the benighted cohort you and I know as “young adults” supported the idea.
That’s 51/42 overall who believe the First Amendment is too permissive of hate speech, but the age split is stark. Baby Boomers are mildly opposed to the idea (47/48) while Gen Xers are only tepidly in favor (48/43). You need to sink down to Millennials before you reach robust support at 57/35. It may be that the phrasing of the question is encouraging the division by age, though, by stressing that the First Amendment is more than 200 years old and contrasting it with “the cultural norms of today.” Obviously a young adult will be more likely to take a position that associates him or her with “today’s” values rather than “yesterday’s.”
Thank you so much for this, RS. I’m going to use that in an article I’m writing for here.
When I was a yute:
https://youtu.be/D5_oPyavUaw
While this is concerning, there is some comfort in knowing that attempting to ban speech has a long history in America, yet the First Amendment still survives mostly intact. But then again, there is also the fact that “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction”, so vigilance is ever warranted.
Not so depressing. Those fuckwits have always been around. They usually come around when the barrel gets turned on them.
Youtube won’t make you racist. It just lets your inner racist shine through.
YouTube is the biggest social media platform in the country, and, perhaps, the most misunderstood. Over the past few years, the Google-owned platform has become a media powerhouse where political discussion is dominated by right-wing channels offering an ideological alternative to established news outlets. And, according to new research from Penn State University, these channels are far from fringe—they’re the new mainstream, and recently surpassed the big three US cable news networks in terms of viewership.
The paper, written by Penn State political scientists Kevin Munger and Joseph Phillips, tracks the explosive growth of alternative political content on YouTube, and calls into question many of the field’s established narratives. It challenges the popular school of thought that YouTube’s recommendation algorithm is the central factor responsible for radicalizing users and pushing them into a far-right rabbit hole.
The authors say that thesis largely grew out of media reports, and hasn’t been rigorously analyzed. The best prior studies, they say, haven’t been able to prove that YouTube’s algorithm has any noticeable effect. “We think this theory is incomplete, and potentially misleading,” Munger and Phillips argue in the paper. “And we think that it has rapidly gained a place in the center of the study of media and politics on YouTube because it implies an obvious policy solution—one which is flattering to the journalists and academics studying the phenomenon.”
Instead, the paper suggests that radicalization on YouTube stems from the same factors that persuade people to change their minds in real life—injecting new information—but at scale. The authors say the quantity and popularity of alternative (mostly right-wing) political media on YouTube is driven by both supply and demand. The supply has grown because YouTube appeals to right-wing content creators, with its low barrier to entry, easy way to make money, and reliance on video, which is easier to create and more impactful than text.
“This is attractive for a lone, fringe political commentator, who can produce enough video content to establish themselves as a major source of media for a fanbase of any size, without needing to acquire power or legitimacy by working their way up a corporate media ladder,” the paper says.
According to the authors, that increased supply of right-wing videos tapped a latent demand. “We believe that the novel and disturbing fact of people consuming white nationalist video media was not caused by the supply of this media ‘radicalizing’ an otherwise moderate audience,” they write. “Rather, the audience already existed, but they were constrained” by limited supply.
Why do I assume anything which promotes the western cultural tradition is being classified as “right-wing”?
Off the bat, I notice some interesting things:
1. Their definitions are not based on self-identification but rather external labels, including the oh-so-neutral Anti-Defamation League.
2. Despite saying that there is a “shared audience”, the “alt-lite” and “intellectual dark web” (protip: if it’s on YouTube, it’s not the “dark web”) channels combined account for (at least) 2 orders of magnitude more views than the “alt-right” (read: racist) channels. Even just comparing the most-viewed channels in each category, and assuming unique viewers is roughly proportional to views, that means 90% of the audience is not shared.
3. Their “control” group is all left-wing content. Granted, this is YouTube, it appeals to popular demand, and I don’t know how much demand there is for content that isn’t obviously left- or right-wing, but to call it “control” is a bit misleading.
4. Their more in-depth analysis of community similarity is based upon unique commenters not viewers. That a comments section selects for different people than the content itself should be obvious, although perhaps I’m just aware of it because of my time at HnR.
5. Their graphs also show a growing overlap between commenters on “control” channels commenters on the other groups, especially for “alt-lite” and “IDW” channels, which implies that the commenters aren’t just going the “alt-right” direction.
6. They call the “alt-right” an “infection” and use terms like “severe infection”. Really, you couldn’t have bothered to pick a more neutral term?
7. Their own findings show an initial surge of activity followed by tapering off. I guess the “infection” heals itself over time?
I can safely ignore anyone who considers Jordan Peterson alt-right, because they’ve already shown they’re retarded and/or disingenuous.
Peterson is labeled a member of the “intellectual dark web” not “alt-right” although the study is doing at least a little lumping of its three non-“control” groups together.
He was called alt right by some
No matter how untrue it is, you can make a label truthy by appending “-adjacent” to it.
JP may not be technically a racist alt-righter bigot homophobe, but he’s definitely alt-right adjacent.
I’ve seen on numerous occasions him being referred to as ‘alt-right’.
How anyone can watch Peterson and conclude he’s ‘alt-right’ is beyond me.
His bible lectures are fantastic. But of course, bible = religion = Christianity ergo ALT-RIGHT. Or some such to the illiberal mind.
Not Progressive is alt-right. It’s pretty much that simple.
I’m sure Naomi Klein is part of the intellectual dark web too, right?
NK is more intellectual-adjacent than actually intellectual.
I safely ignore anyone using the term ‘racist’.
Because that’s what defending Western culture is to them. ‘Right-wing’.
They’re acting EXACTLY how intellectuals and journalists did during the war years praising communist and fascists alike – two LEFT WING ideologies. But they have managed to convince they’re ‘right wing’ when in fact they’re just to the right of Marxism/socialism. In order to be ‘right’ they have to have evolved from classical liberalism or conservatism which they clearly did not. They evolved from socialism/Marxism and found power and expression in the power vacuum when classical liberal collapsed after WWI.
But the popular consent is they’re ‘right wing’ ergo conservative. This has to be rectified.
The real threats to liberal democracies isn’t the ‘youtube alt-right media’. These channels are reacting and challenging the real threats to it: Progressivism. Progressivism is an enemy of liberalism because it’s ILLIBERAL by its very nature and content of its rhetoric and policies.
Those who control the intellectual ‘purse strings’ control the information and right now buddy boy, the left has that in lockdown.
Aside from the fact both the Liberals in Canada and the DNC actively cheer curbing free speech (of which we have an endless stream of examples not even reported or seen on YouTube but in plain media reports), there are two recent examples that point to this obvious reality: One, the DNC holding impeachment hearings in SECRET. Hello. How is that ‘liberal democratic’?
And with Trudeau, he was found guilty of FOUR ethics violations including flat out assaulting the rule of law in the SNC-Lavalin scandal. The Liberals are the most un-transparent government in modern Canadian history.
Both parties project onto others the very anti-democratic sins they purport to fight. Yet, the most despicable ‘objective’ media chooses to side with them. Just the other day, with the PPC decimated, the Globe & Mail ran a headline saying, ‘Canadians rejected your politics of fear, Bernier’ as a direct attack on his character. He did NO SUCH THING. The LIBERALS use the language of division (via the vague Marxist language of diversity and equality). For the love of God, the recent election directly bears this out. Of course, they will say ‘see how racist everyone is?’ and won’t learn a single lesson and in fact, may just double down.
They’re the illiberal faction threatening Western ideals, values and liberty.
Not the rest of us.
Them and them alone.
There are some problems with calling fascists “left-wing”.
1. While their economics is left-wing, their other policies generally aren’t.
2. When they’ve come to power, it’s been in alliance with, or at least with tepid support from, right-wing factions (conservatives, traditionalists, even aristocrats and clergy at times)
3. While the Nolan chart is far from perfect, at the far end of authoritarianism “left” and “right” aren’t that far apart. I think it’s more accurate to say that communism and fascism in practice are just about power and control; ideology is a fig leaf after awhile.
They’re both collectivist ideologies. One formed around economic divisions , the other around traditional institutions (corporatism).
I would say one tries to destroy traditional institutio the other keep them as a fron but alter them to the point they are nothing like the original and made to serve authoroty and collectivism. In the end the institutions are destroyed, wherher a shell is kept or not. A private company that takes all orders from the state is no longer private
Yes, fascists seek to subvert the traditional institutions to the State and retain them for their cultural sway. Communists seek to sweep away all of the old institutions in favor of the new regime.
That’s a good way to put it.
I think “reactionary” is the best term to describe fascism, but of course it is loaded with connotation (for one thing, some people see reactionary, fascist, and Nazism as synonyms). They are not traditionalists, indeed the fascists often trumpeted their shiny new accomplishments. They are, in some sense, engaged in a different kind of skin-suiting. Instead of taking over respected institutions to push them toward radical politics, they take over respected institutions to push them toward convergence with the “nation”.
Nazi socialists were brown shirts. Fascist socialists wore black shirts. Both beat up international socialists and communists. It’s all a family retard fight in drag.
I think lefr and right is bullshit mostly as they are not meaningful anymore. Also fascists had some support from the right because they were conpeting with conmies and seemed less worse.
I find fascism so different from mainstream right as to not be able to include them as far right… but in the end it dont matter. I see myself as neither left nor right so who cares it is a lost fight
Indeed. Left and right, as often pointed out, date back to where people sat in the National Assembly around the time of the French Revolution. Even then the distinction was somewhat murky, and applying those same labels to modern ideas and groups is no less so. Is capitalism and populism right-wing, or is mercantilism and monarchism? Is communism and revolution left-wing, or is socialism and democracy?
Given that China, and to a lesser extent Vietnam, have a system closer to most definitions of “fascism” than “communism”, it’s hard to label fascism as definitively “far-right”.
Hence, they’re ‘right’ under the umbrella of Marxism or socialism.
That conservatives aligned with them may just suggest they had to pick a side or die. Maybe it was just cold political calculating.
Mussolini was willing to strike a deal with the Church whereas communists would probably rather burn it down. I can see why traditionalists and conservatives supported it for purely survival reasons.
Numbering is racist you know.
the popular school of thought that YouTube’s recommendation algorithm is the central factor responsible for radicalizing users and pushing them into a far-right rabbit hole.
There’s a list of “recommendations” or “”suggested for you” or “Users also watch” on YouTube and all sorts of streaming websites. So fucking what? You still have to click and watch them.
I fully agree that DerpTube’s algorithms are silly. Within 2 or 3 videos, regardless of what I initially started with, they give me either a FOX News video or the Cult’s She Sells Sanctuary . I have never, ever, ever voluntarily selected either of those, but they show up every damn time!

Well what would you expect to learn by studying women?
/runs and hides.
Define men
Cisgender, identified at birth by shitlord doctors. Ditto women.
Until transmen and transwomen constitute significant numbers, they’re not really a factor in terms of votes.
That was a joke about what a man should be…

Newly discovered beetled named after Greta Thurnburg. I think it was done in poor taste because the beetle has no eyes and can’t fly.
Does the beetle display multiple symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome?
Not sure what an FAS Beetle looks like, but there’s a picture of both Greta and the Beetle in the article.
There is only One True Beetle.
Ted Kord/Jaime Reyes would like to argue with you about that.
Well, that chick bugs me.
Good morning Swissy and a good morning to the rest of you liberty-junkies.
You won’t believe this, but it’s cold here. Really.
I swear I thought the socialist spa article was the Bee. Too bizarre.
Poor QE. She’s gotta be freaking out a little at what a joke her spawn have become. Too bad, she’s a pretty cool dame.
Here’s a song about a different Queen.
Make it a great day, peeps!
Still in the 40’s-60’s here in the CLE. We’re in that gray period of perpetual clouds and rain though.
?????
Dont tell me what to do!
It’s for your own good, Pie.
“Dame” is far too low of a style for Her Majesty.
It was a compliment.
I like dames.
*impatiently waits for UCS to explain the joke*
While we’re waiting, enjoy some more dame music.
Stock up on popcorn – Durham is now leading a criminal investigation.
I expect the goatee will be visiting the Hat and the Hair before long.
Nothing will come of it but maybe a low level patsy or two being railroaded IMHO but I hope they surprise me.
I agree. I wonder who is the highest level who could go down without sparking a civil war? I think McCabe. He’s already been fired and disgraced so getting rid of him could be easier.
Word is Lisa Page changed Flynn’s 302s and lied about it
More details for anyone interested:

Yikes, a quick read shows Flynn really did get screwed.
Damn, Stinky. Thanks for the link. They (Lisa Page, anyway) edited the 302s! That is an absolutely amazing filing.
FWIW, I’ve practiced before Judge Sullivan. Even when things didn’t go my way, I have to say that he’s a very fair judge. One of the few in DC who isn’t afraid to slap the govt around.
And not to give away info from my own writings here, but Sullivan was the very same judge who found the govt’s anthrax program was illegal.

Not good for her. No wonder she’s staying under the radar lately.
I won’t give 2 shits until 1) whoever released Flynn’s name to the press is identified and prosecuted and 2) the FBI’s policy of no recorded interviews is definitively smacked down by the Supreme Court.
I doubt any of this leads to anything.
Use threading like normal people
That lets me out. Loophole, FTW!
I think it lets everyone here out.
Hey Pie, have some hot Letterkenny action (link expires in 24 hours).

Wow, I haven’t seen that one in a VERY long time. It used to be on HBO all the time when I was a kid.
James Garner correct?
Yes, and James Cromwell in a very early role as one of the villainous cops.
I’ll just leave this here although it encourages stereotypes

Poor QE. She’s gotta be freaking out a little at what a joke her spawn have become. Too bad, she’s a pretty cool dame.
She should have Princess Markle sent to Tyburn before she can do any more damage. Put Harry back in the chopper.
Prince Harry is a Communist?
Not to beat a dead giraffe, but any solutions to the website format issues? It looks fine on phone, but Chrome with windows is still fudged.
The format has been stable for me for the past couple of days, but the avatars are still being detained.
#metoo, but I don’t really care. Going invisible kind of works for mine.
SP has a lot going on now. As long as it’s readable let’s just bear with it for awhile.
Gotcha. Just wasn’t sure if it was on my end or not. I’ll try to persevere 😀
^This. All kidding about OMWC aside, anyone who cares for their dementia afflicted Mother in law deserves all the sympathy and help we can offer.
It may be possible to fix this up in monocle/eyepiece/whatever the glibs are using these days. The correct image is in the srcset attribute but the src attribute is just set to a 1×1 placeholder GIF. I also have this problem in Firefox on Windows.
New Dan Carlin out! Supernova in the East #3!
I just got a 32 hour Audio Book, plenty of podcasts to catch up on… When will i make time for that?
Yes! started listening on my way in to work.
My podcast listening schedule is going to be jacked up for weeks now.
cool thanks!
Yesterday, I saw a Subaru station wagon with a bumper stick which said (something like):
“Hearing crazy voices? Turn off FOX NEWS!”
Also, a “Visualize World Peace”
Bozeman gets the intellectual creme de la creme, I tell ya.
Pretty though.
When see stupid shit like that, I visualize a pop-up minigun like in a presidential motorcade turning someone’s vehicle into Swiss cheese.
Remember Jeffrey Epstein? Because our corporate press sure seems to have forgotten about him (again). Strange how that works.
An american entrepreneur and philanthropist ?
He has fallen off the radar along with Maxwell and his creepy fashion world procurer hasn’t he?
does this surprise anyone, he had a ton of connections to anyone with money or status including a litany of whose who in media and newsrooms. The national media more than likely wanted this story to go away faster than even Clinton did. What’s hilarious to me right now is how the media is treating NBC’s den of rapists and sodomites and that California congress critters bizarre relationships with her employees.
A) that broad is crazy like loon. She actually took meds for mania.
B) she won via ballot “harvesting ” they certainly don’t want any extra attention paid to the “harvested” dems.
C) the law against grongress people consorting with staff is new enough that she actually voted for it ( while secretly violating it, har!)
The district she reps is pretty conservative. It is where most of LA’s cops live. She wouldn’t have won it without some creative tactics, likely.
Ah, I was wondering where she was. Wikipedia calls her district “even” (not +D or +R).
most of LA’s cops
So a heavy pubsec union presence. Would explain some Dem votes.
Was that one of the people who died the the Las Vegas shooting?
I will never ever not think that that whole thing is a coverup for someones gigantic fuckup. Either the FBI or someone facilitated that attack in some non zero way or the Casino interests have bought and paid for more politicians and federal agency’s than I thought was even possible.
My personal theory, is the ATF/FBI and Obama admin fingerprints are all over some of those guns from some dumbass sting operation like Fast and Furious.
Why else would you suicide the guy? The whole point is to make it go away without trials and evidence and coverage.
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/tulsi-gabbard-says-she-wont-seek-re-election-congress-2020
“Third-Party Run? Tulsi Gabbard Says She Won’t Seek Re-election To Congress”
That’s a real loss for Congress. Whoever replaces her will likely have the same bad economics, but none of the good foreign policy or support for individual rights like Tulsi did. Plus, they will likely not be as hot, because Tulsi is a smoke show.
On the other hand nothing would get done wither way. But the lone voice in congress is good to have i suppose
I think she’s been thoroughly disillusioned with her party (not the policies)
I’d love your thoughts on a TG third-party run. Like, article-length thoughts.
My commitment to vote for her was specifically limited to her getting the nomination! (yeah I was making a totally symbolic gesture deliberately lol)
RC Dean the other day said “Gabbard/McAfee 2020”, Hot/Crazy.
I chortled and took that to FB. One of my humorless friends took it seriously and without humor. “She’s crazy all right.” Lighten up, Francis.
I’m stealing that
One perk of retiring from band-gigging: I’m much less obliged to spend time on FB being our Goddess of Shameless Self-Promotion.
But if I get to the point where I need to be plugging my writing, I suppose I’ll have to wade back in. ***SIGH!!!*** Oh, well – it’s been a nice break.
If you want to sell anything, sadly, yes. That is where the readers are.
Dem establishment whispered in her ear that she would be primaried for upsetting the apple cart? Or she’s going to go full time into public exercise videos?
Yusef, if you are about, this is Geo-Hex, the terrain I’ve been using since about 1986. The fellow stopped producing it in 2003 but came back in 2016. The modular design is a key feature; being able to mix and match amongst the sets to get the battlescape you desire is great. https://www.facebook.com/geohex/
It’s still a popular shape/style of WG surface, you could build custom features on the here’s and sell them I suppose, hmmm
Move along, nothing to see here.
“I think it’s quite clear we have a surfeit of evidence that corroborates in full every aspect of what happened and the policy they were pursuing,” Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-VA), a member of the House Oversight and Foreign Affairs committees, said in a statement to the Post.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) told the Post:
“This is the role that whistleblowers play: Whistleblowers are the people who set off a process by telling the truth. The whistleblower will go down in history as a hero for kicking off this process. But the whistleblower is no longer integral to the investigation in any way.”
Appearing October 13th on CBS News Face the Nation, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) said the so-called “whistleblower’s” testimony “might not be necessary.”
Meanwhile, Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have called for the so-called “whistleblower’s” identity to be revealed and for he or she to testify publically.
Parallel construction FTW
Of course, how this works when there’s nothing there, who knows.
“Whistleblower” is going to be one of those words that gets plastered all over the place for the next few months and then get trotted out by pols for the rest of my days. Like “lock-box”, “electronic town-hall”, and the appending of “gate” to things.
I find it infuriating. Actual whisteblowers will continue to get fucked by the legal system. But “whistleblowing” to score pro-Democrat political points will be all the rage.
As QE is named after me and has my birthdate, I haz a sad for her.

Rhy, I would not have wanted to be you during the Woodshipper Time.
Does this comment count as Brooksing?
I think it’s more along the lines of Suthen’s omnibus catch-up posts he does from time to time, but I don’t think we’ve reached the stage of giving that a label yet.
Omnibus
That’s what I call it. When I need a good summary and response because I don’t have time, ctrl-f “suthen” enter.
Then, in my head, “Yeah, what he said.”
Done. Back to work.
So from now on, that’s a Suthen? I like it.
Seconded? Do we have a quorum? I vote “aye” that we call summation comments a Suthen.
Aye
The Chinese are learning from us.
Chinese Communist Party: Criticizing LeBron James is racist
It’s good to see the chicoms standing up for a rich capitalist.
LOL, from one of the most racist regimes on the planet.
Nèi ge, please.
Well done, Sir! When I first got to China and heard them speak, I was like, “They can’t be saying what it sounds like they’re saying.” I had to wait awhile to work up the courage to ask someone what that actually meant.
I learned that “nèige” is a colloquial form of “nàge”. But that was after my visit to China so I wasn’t aware of which one people used more. When I was there I couldn’t say anything more than “hello” and “where is the toilet”.
They’ve been playing the victim card for centuries.
Something, something, throw stones in a glass house, something, Uighurs
Meanwhile, Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have called for the so-called “whistleblower’s” identity to be revealed and for he or she to testify publically.
Sixth Amendment? Pffft.
The Constitution is just a fucking piece of paper.
I really don’t get why the Dems won’t dispense with the bullshit and open a real impeachment vote.
Wait, I get it. They don’t want to and they want to drag this out until after the election.
Getting real investigative powers – discovery and everything that comes with that – is their brass ring. They had it with Mueller, and they are pushing for it in various state and federal courts – NY Attorney general, private lawsuits, etc.
Clinton’s “politics of personal destruction” are in full effect…. Trump just refuses to play their game. Dude has no sense of shame, he’s had F.U. money his whole life, and just absolutely doesn’t give a crap.
Man, the House of Windsor has been laid low.
In fairness, that “Gender Equality” conference actually seems to be focusing on places that don’t have a great track record of treating the sexes equally. FTA:
I visulaize the scene as soon as the Royal’s plane lifts off. “Imagine those fucking rich white Eurotrash come here to tell us what to do.”
Joe Biden, man of integrity.
The former vice president, who is besieged by questions over his youngest son’s business dealings in Ukraine and China, made the comments when asked if Trump’s children have “acted properly and avoided conflicts of interests” since he entered the Oval Office. After initially claiming that he was not “raised to go after children,” Biden said “their actions” spoke for themselves.
“I can just tell you this, that if I’m president, get elected president, my children are not gonna have offices in the White House,” Biden said. “My children are not gonna sit in on cabinet meetings.”
He further added that it was “simply improper” that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the president’s daughter and son-in-law, held high-level roles in the administration.
“The idea that you’re gonna have [to] go to the extent that he has gone to have our, you know his children, his son-in-law, et cetera, engaged in the day-to-day operation of things they know nothing about,” Biden said.
He needs his children posted in foreign countries in order to peddle influence.
That’s hilarious!
I think there is near universal acceptance that Ivanka is by far the most formidable of the group, and much brighter than dad.
Meanwhile, Biden’s kid had multiple no-show jobs that he had no qualifications for other than being related to a high US government official. How do these guys parrot their DNC-approved position with a straight face?
Hey now, Hunter is a very qualified drug tester.
How do these guys parrot their DNC-approved position with a straight face?
Legions of NPCs cheering them on, on cue.
Unlike his son, for instance, noted management consultant, financier, and natural gas engineer Hunter Biden.
“After initially claiming that he was not “raised to go after children,”…”
Suffer the little children. Hunter Biden is 49 years old.
“I can just tell you this, that if I’m president, get elected president, my children are not gonna have offices in the White House,” Biden said. “My children are not gonna sit in on cabinet meetings.”
“So tell us, Joe, was JFK appointing his brother as Atttorney General a bad thing?”
alternately
“I doubt Hunter would have time to sit in on cabinet meetings. I’m sure his dealings with Ukraine and China keep him busy.”
This morning’s Today show revealed the top priority for this news cycle. Discredit the investigation of the FISA abuse at the root of the Russia investigation.
They had an entire segment that was exclusively a hit piece on the investigation. Commercial to commercial, filled with clips from top democrats telling us that this is an unprecedented politicization of the Department of Justice, clips of Trump “attempting to discredit the Russia investigation for years” followed by a list of all the “truth” uncovered by Mueller – proving the legitimacy of the investigation.
They are really, really worried. They have been gaslighting this thing from the jump, and the announcement that it has moved into a criminal probe has them in fits.
Yeah, NPR was doing the same.
The Media has it’s marching Orders.
I got into a conversation with a friend and he said Trump displays all the attributes of the rise of fascisism, one of which was an attack on the free and independent press.
I had to disagree, as it seemed to me that during the rise of fascisim Musolini and even Hitler (until he “went bad”) got several tounge baths from the media. It’s something i will have to look into. But I think the basic premise is flawed. Was Obama not against a free and independent press because it was enthralled with him? He was pretty harsh on any outlet that was critical of him. The only difference is that Trump sees them as political rivals. Because that’s what they are. The ties to Democratic operations are so apparent, that treating them as an arm of the opposition party seems utterly reasonable.
It isn’t even arguable any more. In fact, they don’t pretend. They are propaganda, not “independent news organizations”.
The New York Times openly admitted that they were attempting to bring Trump down with their coverage of the Russia investigation. They openly and publicly lamented that they failed in this endeavor. And they openly announced their plan to pivot to a new topic to attack Trump and ensure the election of democrats. They were going to pivot to issues of race and racism. This became their 1619 project. They did not attempt to hide it in any way. They were quite proud, in fact.
CNN has been outed by an insider. They held regular meetings in which the news room was ordered from on high to push impeachment all day, every day. Again, not really a secret, but something they are quite proud of. In fact, the disagreements from staff seemed to be about *how* to attempt to bring Trump down, not whether that was an appropriate focus for a supposed news organization.
NBC was working closely with Chuck Schumer and the democrats to oppose the Kavanaugh nomination. Savanna Guthrie was at a 2 am meeting at Schumer’s NY penthouse apartment the night before the letter from Blasey-Ford leaked (from Schumer’s office).
They don’t really hide this stuff any more.
Remember when they tried to claim they were not biased? They don’t even bother with that any more. Now the only “don’t say that” line is that they are actual propagandists for the DNC. I don’t think that is at all arguable at this point – you really can’t explain their behavior as simple “bias” in reporting.
Critics of Obama were racist. There was no other reason to criticize him or his policies.
Was Obama not against a free and independent press because it was enthralled with him?
The same Obama who prosecuted more leakers than all other presidents combined? Whose administration harassed organizations critical of him? Obama was more harsh towards his critics in the media than Trump, he just had way fewer of them.
They had an entire segment that was exclusively a hit piece on the investigation. Commercial to commercial, filled with clips from top democrats telling us that this is an unprecedented politicization of the Department of Justice, clips of Trump “attempting to discredit the Russia investigation for years” followed by a list of all the “truth” uncovered by Mueller – proving the legitimacy of the investigation
I know i’m not smarter than the average retard, but don’t have my head up the DNC’s ass. But wouldn’t the fact that nothing came of it and Mueller said there was no russian investigation kinda validate his “attempts” to discredit it.
They are already rewriting that history.
from the NBC news piece: “Mueller documented 140 incidents of contact between Russians and members of the Trump campaign, and 10 attempts at obstruction of justice by Trump”.
This, following several clips of Trump saying “It is a witch hunt” which were described as “attempts to discredit the investigation into Russian interference in the election”..
There is so much wrong there that it would be hard to fully address it all. The thing that really boggles my mind (and kinda scares me) is that these people all went from “Trump is so crazy – that guy actually claims that his phones are being tapped” to “It is a great thing that the FBI is spying on a major candidate for president and then president elect!” in a matter of days.
I’d love for 1974 Woodward to come have a talk with 2019 Woodward. Sneaking a peak at the opposing party’s plans was the highest of high crimes back then. Now, sending spies into the opposing campaign and using the apparatus of state to undermine the incoming administration is not only fine and dandy, it is laudable.
When Reagan said he outlawed Russia, he was joking. Somebody should let the MSM and establishment know.
After Reagan made that statement all US intelligence services were running full bore for a few days watching all the responses from the Soviets – that little “ping” gave us a lot of information on how they would respond to what they believed to be real threats. Very valuable for that time.
So a politician is not allowed to say anything in their own defense? When did this standard start? Because I’m pretty sure Hillary said all kinds of things about the “investigation” into her activities when it was going on.
They’re just flailing now and it’s most excellent.
I’ve decided I want Trump to be re-elected, so long as the Dems increase their House majority and take the Senate (all three things looking likely now).
Absolutely nothing would get done for 4 years. It would be glorious.
Remember: no matter who wins, the sclerosis and dysfunction will increase, and so the real winner will be the American people.
Sclerotic Brezhnevism was one of my favorite takeaways from Moldbug.
I prefer Republicans keep the Senate and act as brake on a neocon democrat.
A neocon can be swept into office on the fervor/vigorous flag-waving platform (better behave, Venezuela) by the truck drivers without needing a towering socialist agenda. Then the Senate refuses to pass his budgets or approve his appointments.
Absolutely nothing would get done for 4 years. It would be glorious
Ahem: Red Flag Laws
That scenario would allow them to effectively block any reform of the Executive branch.
Except Democrats have been letting their authoritarian freak flag fly as of late. I want as few of them in positions of power as possible.
If by “absolutely nothing” you mean “nonstop impeachment theater”, then sure. The real election will be for VP, then.
As disappointing as Mitch is on some/many fronts, he acts as a brake on the worst impulses of both the Dem House and the President.
Also, I cannot believe that allowing the Dems to dictate court appointments for four years is better than Trump and the Repubs.
A Repub Senate has some advantages. I will agree that a Repub House appears to be pretty useless, and it might as well be Dem, for the gridlock.
This. For gridlock, Trump with a split Congress is the way to go. If Trump had an opposition Congress, it’s possible he’d give in to some pretty bad things to try to make a deal with them, but as long as Congress itself is divided he’ll stay within acceptable bounds.
Google And Facebook Are Making a Photo Gun Registry Complete With Serial Numbers
Taking a picture of your weapon and uploading it to the internet in an identifiable manner always struck me as a foolish thing to do anyways.
Thankfully, the only guns I’ve taken pictures of are C&R guns I have to keep records on anyway.
Shocked! Shocked, I say. Seriously though, this is why I don’t post photos (particularly of my kids) online.
This.
My Family is upset cause my wife and i don’t do the Facebook/Instagram thing with our kids.
Taking a picture with your gun seemed like a dumb thing to do. Just wait until the Feds decide to subpoena the registry, just like they have subpoenaed DNA registries. It’s easy to get around the constitution/laws when you have private companies willing to do what you are not allowed to do yourself.
I think a big risk is that the big tech companies will become pseudo-nationalized at some point. If I were a deep state swamp creature, this would be my strategy:
1. Wait for a major data breach at Google, or purposely create one if it’s taking too long
2. Put out a message (through media collusion) that these big tech companies can’t be trusted with data and that the government should do something about it
3. Come out with a proposal to “regulate” these companies. Insist that they’ll still be private but that the government will merely step in to help them keep their data secure.
4. Implement the regulations kind of like HIPAA, so that the government is theoretically just ensuring security but actually has access to all of the data.
5. Snuff out competition by implementing “cybersecurity regulations” that make it impossible for anyone to compete with the big tech companies.
Boom – now if you communicate electronically, you basically have to do it over a medium where the government can see the data. Crazy conspiracy theory? Maybe it is right now, but when I look at the activities of the NSA, FBI, and CIA, I don’t think it’s that far down the bunny hole.
assume the majority of firearms posted online are ads for sale.
Posting photos of firearms on-line in any way that can be tied to you or your address is an invitation to thieves. That is just the first reason to never do it. What the above article points to is just one more reason not to do this.
Intentionally, or they’re just scanning all photos for any easily recognizable data like characters?
I have to believe its intentional. Serial numbers are tiny; I’m surprised they can read them at all, and assume they can only do so by looking for them specifically.
Also, why would they save the serial numbers so a search turns them up? I know Big Data loves accumulating data, but I have hard time believing every image with any text can be retrieved just by looking for the text.
I have to believe its intentional. Serial numbers are tiny; I’m surprised they can read them at all, and assume they can only do so by looking for them specifically.
Eh, OCR doesn’t really work that way. It can detect patterns whether the patterns are big or small in the image, and it can detect color contrasts (like engraved/stamped numbers) that are difficult for the human eye to see. I’ve had OCR pick up text that was obviously written on a different piece of paper and imprinted through onto the scanned document.
Maybe my second question could be tested – post an image with some tiny text in it, and see if it comes up on a search of that text.
I tried a handful of attempts from random (and clear) online gun pics. I was able to find 2 P210s from the serial # in the pics, but failed to find several other handguns & ARs.
I always Crack up when motorcycle people tape over the last few digits of their Vin numbers. They don’t seem to realize that they visible to everyone who sees that bike, anywhere and always. Like the guy taking a picture of his car with his finger blocking the plate, while it’s parked at the curb in front of his house. Google Earth shows it parked right there three months ago.
From the Chinese government conference article:
Sounds like there’s some positives to the trade war, here.
Off topic (can you be off topic in the lynx), one of the things I’ve been discussing with my therapist lately is that my issue isn’t my diagnosed mental issues, but that I am just completely and utterly burned out on everything. I don’t get enjoyment out of much, I have little or no drive to do… anything. I’m stuck in a rut with nowhere to go.
How do y’all get out of a rut like this? Without alcohol or other mind-altering substances.
I was going to answer until I read your last sentence.
I’ve found, as much as I’m loathe to leave the house, that sunshine and exercise work wonders for me in that regard.
It’s still 90 degrees and humid out, much as I’d love to spend more time outside.
That’s a tough one. I find I’m most optimistic and energized when I’m starting a new endeavor of some kind, anything from looking for a new job to doing a project around the house. Basically, taking on a new task that requires attention, planning, and focus.
Date a hot 19-year-old?
I don’t know. My drug dealer has been a little stymied because the last three times I’ve gone to get my refills on my head meds, I can only say, “This is my life and it sucks. There is no pill for that.” So she just listens to my list and writes my rx.
What I really fantasize about is a cruise (never been on one) or a vacation on one of those all-inclusive island resorts.
Regarding cruises. I grew up on a sailboat (a 32′ schooner, Colleen) and was raised to look down upon power boats and despise cruise ships. I never had any interest in cruising whatsoever. Then, in 2008, MiL decides she wants a family cruise for her 65th birthday. Seventeen people, 8 of whom are ultra-orthodox Hasidim, taking a 7 day down to the Bahamas. I was terrified. All I could imagine was that it would be like being at a cheap motel that you were never allowed to leave. It turned out to be quite nice. The included food was decent but the pay restaurants were bloody amazing. We dined in their steakhouse most nights – OMG… those Wagyu sliders. I would definitely do it again.
Good to know! People warn me off cruising, but they do seem fun in the commercials.
The group stuff was annoying but I’m disinclined to such things regardless. I endured the cloying, asphyxiating, cigarette smoke to win a couple hundred dollars on the Roulette wheel (by pure happenstance – I’ve never played the game but got a sudden, irresistible urge to Wesley Snipes it “Always bet on black” and I won 2 consecutive spins). The highlight was the kids pool area; it had a waterfall/shallow pool/HOT TUB, was on the bow, and was unoccupied most of the time. I spent hours and hours relaxing in that hot tub at night under the stars without seeing a single other human.
My wife is big into them and has talked me into two of them. They have their ups and downs. I generally dislike crowds and I’m a cheapskate, so that already makes me not ideal for many cruise activities. However, our last one had movies at night on a huge screen by the pool area, and it was a lot of fun watching under the sky while relaxing in a hot tub. Got a lot of fantastic sunrise/sunset pictures from the deck. Reading in the sun while on the deserted back deck, watching the wake, was oddly soothing.
As lobot said, there’s great food but you’re gonna pay extra for it. The included buffet is okay – not great, not terrible. There are a lot of options so usually you can find something decent enough to eat. The kids love that there’s a free soft serve machine available 24/7. On both cruises we told them that they could eat all the ice cream they wanted since we were on vacation, and they took advantage to the max.
I much preferred our second to our first – the first was to the Bahamas in August and it was ungodly hot. The second was Canada and Maine, with temperatures much more to my liking. Halifax is a pretty city but really expensive.
Yeah, I could let my kids disappear for the week and never care if they fed and watered and slept themselves.
“… I grew up on a sailboat (a 32′ schooner, Colleen)…”
Origin stories are all the rage right now. I would read that if you wrote it.
I like sailboats. I have this crazy dream about buying one and sailing around the world.
#metoo
My drug of choice for getting out of the dumps is exercise. Intense cardio in particular.
I have also been in quite a rut recently and to counter that I try to schedule time running or in the gym.
stick it in crazy.
that seems to make life unbearably exciting!
Now that the serious replies are out of the way, I’ll suggest you ask everyone what type of gun to purchase. Repeatedly. Then ask to get banned. Repeatedly.
Take care of the basics, first. Get rid of any crap in your diet. Take a media break. Go on a long hike in the woods.
Try to get out of your routine: start a project, volunteer, etc. Something that distracts you from your circular thoughts. The rush of creating something or helping someone can do good things.
I like self-improvement projects that require discipline (waves at GlibFit). Having a mission really helps me smooth out the bumps.
I like the fact you are looking for non-chemical strategies. Good luck, dude.
DIet and exercise can be huge for kicking depression.
Of course, on of the big things about being depressed is that you want to sit around by yourself and eat like crap.
fuck it dude, let’s go bowling.
I got into some trouble over insinuating this yesterday, but I’ll try again: most people feel best when their lives (jobs and outlets) align with our human nature. So, you need to find things to do, at least as hobbies, that create the feel of the human urges. For men, this includes
* serving or protecting eg: assistant scoutmaster
* hunter / explorer: hiking, golf, cycling (none of those shorts or bike lanes!!!)
* building: carpentry, farming, woodworking
* chase chicks
Scouting and golf were best for me: you get out, you exercise, you’re in the company of other men.
I dare not have opinions on what exercise and fellowship for women should look like.
Why did you get in trouble?
I have grown to appreciate golf for the man-escape it is.
My husband, who has trouble making friends, has found a dude bro pal to do things with and is very happy. So is dude bro pal, who seems to not wear the pants in the family.
Depends. A change of scenery or trying out new hobbies may help. There’s a reason alcohol and drugs are popular.
1: Read the great philosophers, starting with Epictetus
2: Do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
3: Reflect daily on how you’ll be dead soon and so will everyone, and it’s nothing to be afraid of, because the unalterable universal law of cause and effect has decreed that what’s going to happen is what’s going to happen
4: Be outside more and cut down trees and split firewood by hand and shit like that
5: Lift weights
Warty has spoken with sage advice hear his wisdom. Also I have beef with one as book learnin is for faggots.
WHYCOME AINT U BURNIN AT ERE FAGGOTY BOOK U FAGGOT
Oh yeah, and following these rules help you pound more snizz, which also helps.
Pounding snizz helps quite a bit.
“I’ve been marching towards my death since the day I was born” – Seneca
He’s is a good one, and so is Marcus Aurelius. Reading those two guys has helped me with the depression/demotivation issues.
The cool kids change genders these days.
I am just completely and utterly burned out on everything. I don’t get enjoyment out of much, I have little or no drive to do… anything. I’m stuck in a rut with nowhere to go.
How do y’all get out of a rut like this?
Let me know when you find out. I have a hard time calling what I have depression or anxiety when I can define the root cause and simply can’t change it. My job is dysfunctional and has grown from a 40 hour/week job to a 45 hour/week job to now getting closer to 50 hours/week. Add in that the coping mechanisms that worked when I was single (alone time, gardening and other hobbies, tennis) don’t make the priority list when I have a wife and a kid.
The things I’ve found help (when possible) are 1) sticking to a schedule and not letting work exceed those bounds 2) getting outside for my lunch break 3) having some event to look forward to each week 4) talking with coworkers.
4) talking with coworkers.
REEEEEE!
…as you fantasize about methods of torturing them.
Find that thing that makes you laugh. You’re problems will still be there, but at least you’ll have a smile on your face.
One thing I have seen is the conflation of cause and effect in mental health.
One popular meme is that a cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind – so having a neat environment is good for mental health. However, in my personal experience it runs the other way. I’ve seen people close to me begin a depression spiral and then letting their environment collapse around them. Then they look at the mess and say “all of this mess is causing my depression”, when it is my opinion that the depression caused the mess, not the other way around.
So the same goes for all of the items you list – do these things cause burnout and pull you down, or is your mental state pulling them down?
Impossible to say from here…. but there is a possibility that the distinction isn’t important. One thing that I’ve seen work in a few situation is “acting as if”. Meaning you act like you are healthy. You have a positive attitude. Work out, throw yourself into work and hobbies.. Including a change of scenery if needed.
Because these things tend to be a feedback loop, anything that breaks the loop has a chance of working. Whether that be pharmaceuticals that snap the bad thought cycle, or environmental changes. Or both. (probably both is better, if drugs are an option)
I think this relates to the work that has been done recently with psycho actives like hallucinogens and MDMA. Kick the brain out of the loop and quickly rewire that piece and you have a shot.
One lady I know went from fat and depressed to an obsessive marathon runner. She’s a lot happier… still has a healthy dose of underlying crazy, as the obsessive behavior over working out attests. But she’s healthier and happier than she was. Work is better. Relationships are better. Not great, but lots better.
I think a big part of the problem is breaking out of a “local minimum”. Like in chemistry or physics, where you have a stable state, and you have to add more energy to reach another, more stable state. Like a ball in a bowl on a table. Push it a little and it will roll back and forth in the bowl. But push it hard enough and it will roll over the edge of the bowl and fall to the floor.
That’s my mental picture of these situations. It can be really, really hard to break from an environment (that might be of your own creation) and move to a more healthy one that might be more stable long term.
Medication might be an important tool for accomplishing that…. but finding a competent doctor in that field? Yeah, that’s a tough one.
Cleaning up my space works. My space gets nasty when I’m on a roll of productivity. It’s when I crash and burn that I look around and it reminds me that I WAS productive and now I’m not and the guilt sets in.
Journaling everything in a stream of consciousness (just putting the words down no matter what—I once wrote “anger” down for a page or two) works to an extent. When I am super depressed/stressed/out of my mind with soul-pain, I do not journal. There is too much.
When I am in that much soul-pain, I disappear into writing a new book and don’t come up for air, which makes everything 10x worse. Just did that.
I specifically left out art and literature.
I sketch, I play guitar, but I’m careful. I don’t want to get stuck in some Motherwell loop trying to paint the perfect Holstein blob over and over . . . or run up against my motor skills threshold and sad out because I can’t play every Lester Flatt riff . . . or listen to too much Townes Van Zandt and end up wanting to just sit around and drink.
Art and expression can be good, but it’s a minefield.
There’s a point where you’re really as good as you think you are/want to be, when it just becomes a fun ride that turns out awesome.
I’m on a roll, high as a kite, and I want to STAY THERE, and I do, and I have abandoned everything (including eating and sleeping) to go lie in a gutter somewhere and drink my problems away as if it will help.
Narrator: It never does.
That sounds about right. Being insular causes damage… and makes you want to be more insular.
Don’t ever claim that God (or the universe) doesn’t have a sense of humor.
Anyway – at least we are glad you are here! Just like Carl the Greenskeeper, you got that goin’ for ya.
“Clean your rooooooooomm!!!11” – Jordan Peterson
… Seriously though, I enjoyed 12 Rules for Life, and I picked up some notions from that book that have helped me through similar depressive/demotivated “ruts” in my life. I’d recommend it to anyone struggling with that kind of thing.
He is talking about picking a simple starting point that doesn’t require major preparation and training, and that gives you an immediate emotional return on your invested time, more than about the meme.
I know I know I stepped on the joke. I have been down a JP rabbithole Since Mojeaux’s religion post and he is really striking chords with me.
Watch “Harold and Maude” or read “The Phantom Tollbooth.”
Harold and Maude is a great diagnostic tool.
If you watch that and say “Hey, now there’s a good idea…”….. you need to seek immediate help.
HEY! That Jag/hearse conversion is awesome. I’m not crazy for wanting one.
You are posting on a libertarian comment board. A spin-off, libertarian comment board. About a 40 year old Robert Altman movie.
You wanna rethink that conclusion?
You’re right. This IS a libertarian site; I should have been bloviating about Tanner ’88.
Excellent movie!
You are young. You can still switch horses and finish well in the race. I have seriously been considering taking Peterson’s https://www.selfauthoring.com/, but at 52 it is much more daunting to start a new path.
Daunting, sure, but maybe necessary. I’m also 52 and I’m getting bored.
Mrs. T and I have been talking about making some new, aggressive life goals.
If you go through the SA process, I’d love to hear feedback.
We’re 5 years away from an empty nest. Since we married late and had a baby immediately, we haven’t had much time alone with each other.
Daunting, sure, but maybe necessary.
That is kind of where I am. I do not get any satisfaction from my work and not nearly enough from other aspects of my life and right now I am wavering between terror at making drastic changes (especially since I don’t have any real idea what to change to) and a growing realization that if I continue as I am am that I’m pretty much giving up.
I’ve let myself drift along paths of least resistance for most of my adult life. I do not recommend that.
I am just completely and utterly burned out on everything. I don’t get enjoyment out of much, I have little or no drive to do… anything.
Textbook depression, it sounds like.
How do y’all get out of a rut like this?
I think it takes a fundamental change in your life, at least, when I was depressed that’s what worked. New job and, in my case, new spouse.
And change avatars.
That’s my political tshirt for this election cycle.
Mrs. Dean opted for “Giant Meteor 2020: Just End It Already”.
Your avatars have been mostly awesome.
Thanks! It’s coming on Halloweenie, so I’m going to change it across all my social media as I usually do.
new spouse
it is so easy to get up and make breakfast for a girl who is not going to bitch about something stupid I said in 1986
it is also very easy to get up and make breakfast for a girl who was born in 1986, but that gets old after a few months
Yeah, that’s why I stopped making breakfast for my ’86er.
OK, it’s because she is usually out the door at 4am and fuck that noise.
For me, it was accept that I’d moved somewhere that I didn’t like, find out (to my surprise) that my spouse didn’t like it much either, and make/execute plans to move someplace more advantageous (in several sense of that word). Worked a treat, though it’s had unforeseen consequences with at least one family member at the previous location who’s thrown a temper tantrum that we’re no longer there.
Can’t satisfy everybody.
No, you can’t. And if the person at the top of your “must satisfy” stack isn’t your spouse, there’s a problem.
Agreed. The temper tantrum (from my eldest brother, 67 years old) was both a bit of a shock and laced with projection and implied threats. The wife read the text message and said “This isn’t even rational — there’s no point in responding. He might calm down in a while, or not.” Fortunately for my mental/emotional health, I’ve always been mostly a stranger to him (and he to me), because he left the rest of the family four decades ago to start a new life on the coast. Thus, his implied threat to never speak to me again struck me as mercurial and unwise, to say the least.
Go out of your way to help people. Strangers or whatever. If you see someone with a flat tire, stop and change it for them. Go collect a bunch of toys and bring them to the hood and pass them out. Spend your time being concerned about others. It works for me.
THEN drink and use drugs.
You get a house! You get a house!
It reads like a Babylon Bee article. SMDH
+1 Cabrini-Green
tenant-owned
That sounds positively awful. Is the whole place trashed?
Unless, i guess, she could be talking about condos?
I read past that phrase the first time though.
Doesn’t my house count as “tenant owned”?
We had to have our AC and our refrigerator replaced in the same week and the landlord did it without complaint. I vote to keep my responsible landlord.
Curious: are you “rent stabilized”? Did they charge you for the replacements?
Why would they charge for replacements. You don’t own it. They do.
When I rented, I had a good landlord, but I can think of a lot of ways a landlord could avoid paying at least some of the cost of the repair. Not to mention, they’re obligated to fix it, they’re not obligated to fix it right now.
I am “rent stabilized” and you guessed it, they charge you for new appliances. Just another part of the scam.
Do they at least let you paint the walls in colors you like?
I’m not aware of any restriction on painting. I have no interest in doing it, but I could.
No, market rate, newish build (2011), townhouse style buildings. Landlord ate the cost of appliances. We have a good relationship; I can do most maintenance/repairs myself, so we rarely have to bother him and we try hard to stay at least 6 months ahead on the rent.
As God is my witness,
I thought turkeys could flyI will never own a home again.People who have not watched that episode are not to be trusted.
Also, phone cops.
These are important life lessons.
I have vivid memories of watching that episode with my parents when it aired. My dad’s dad, and all of his brothers worked for Southern Bell and I thought dad was going to pass out he was laughing so hard about the phone company.
This is terrible! Oh, the humanity!
As usual, all I hear is a WHOOOSH. No idea what y’all’re talking about.
‘Turkeys Away’ one of the best episodes of WKRP In Cincinnati. https://youtu.be/p00nBSNIPwg

Ah, OK. That was one of those shows that was big during the years when I was stationed overseas and I never really caught up with later.
As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly I will never own a home again.
My rule of thumb is that the housing market is sufficiently efficient that there is no meaningful economic difference between renting and owning, unless you actually own outright (no mortgage) which few people do.
The reasons to pick one over the other are mostly subjective.
Mr. Mojeaux feels deeply in his soul that “owning” means he made it and renting means he failed.
That’s only because it’s true, Mojeaux.
For us, buying in NYC (apart from being absurdly beyond our reach) isn’t a good deal. We are renting while still putting aside a fund to purchase property when we retire to Florida. Our house here in NYC was purchased for $500,000.00. To me that is BLOODY INSANE! I’ll stick with my $1800 monthly rent and keep my sights set on a future Sarasota/Charlotte County spread.
I’m of the same mindset.
No way to confirm it now, but I think that mindset has probably taken six figures (and likely not with a “1” handle) off my net worth over time (mostly from having bought houses, put money in them, and then needing to sell them within 3 – 5 years). At the margins, in specific cases, owning or renting can be economically superior, but owning mostly comes out ahead if (i) you own it for a long time and/or (ii) you catch the market cycle right.
Why would you buy to own for a short time? Selling assets is a failure.
Why would you buy to own for a short time?
Wasn’t the plan. Kept getting tripped up by my inability to hold a job.
you catch the market cycle right
I’d encourage people to think of housing as an expense, not an investment: you gotta live somewhere. And the net at the end is not much useful except to your heirs.
So, for me, the cycle doesn’t enter into it. You can’t sell high and buy low unless you rent high in the meantime.
Considering all the money we have poured into this black hole, I consider us to have failed 3 years into our “ownership.”
I’d encourage people to think of housing as an expense, not an investment: you gotta live somewhere. And the net at the end is not much useful except to your heirs.
Yup. We’ve lived in our current house for six years. We bought it at crash prices, hundreds of thousands less than it cost to build. Based on our out of pocket – interest, “improvements”/repairs, taxes, and insurance, we are probably still not to break even, in spite of something of a market recovery. Maybe a little ahead of renting, but its all unrealized gains anyway, as you point out.
I will tell you right now, dead serious, that that was truly hurtful. I will not make the same mistake I made with CPRM by telling you to fuck off.
We have poured over a decade of our earnings (which are not shabby) into keeping this house from falling down and absolutely nothing to show for it.
One bad decision and we have lived in misery for over a decade because we “own” a home and this apparently means we “made it.”
No. We fucked up and then one of us kept hanging on because he felt he made it and would not give that up. I have spiraled into a mani depression TWICE because of it. And so. Now we have a way out and I put my foot down.
The conversation was not pleasant.
I’m sorry.
I see that it was in poor taste, and I want to let you know I did not mean to be hurtful.
Thank you. I may have overreacted.
Ownership gives you more control, renting gives you more flexibility. Economically , as people have said, it is often a wash with ownership having more upside potential but also more downside. If you are actually knowledgeable about housing and the trades ownership is a clear winner because you can make an informed choice when buying and can handle repairs and maintenance much more cheaply. If you are not knowledgeable about those things it is a pure crap shoot and you are at the mercy of the market, the weather, and plain old entropy.
At the end of the day I think Don is right. Your home is not an investment. Investments are things that give you a return. Your house is a consumer good, and should be selected as such.
Get a room, you two.
Kidding! I thought UnCiv’s post was amusing (and intended to be so), but could definitely see how it could strike a nerve.
My boss once asked me why I didn’t buy. I had to struggle mightily not to laugh in his face. “Um… because I’m single, don’t want a two-hour commute, and you didn’t get me a good enough raise?”
It is true that I am overly touchy about that right now.
Thank you. I have felt this for a long time, but not known how to articulate it. My only argument for the last five years has been “We have to have a roof over our head. Why can’t we have one we don’t have to sink more money into?”
I didn’t quite realize how much it hurt, and accept all due blame. I’m not generally mean-spirited, and striking that nerve was accidental. I truely hope you can find a more joyful state.
Thank you, UCS. I should’ve waited a while and cooled off. I try not to pop off in public and I do believe now that I overreacted.
The democrats are well past “If you like your ‘x’ you can keep it.” They are full blown: get rid of every private relationship that doesn’t give us more power/ we don’t like.
I see that they want housing to become utterly unaffordable.
Hey fuckhead – look up Section 8.
Then go walk some Section 8 properties.
Then fuck off.
The neighborhood I used to live in back in Pensacola was a nice little neighborhood, but right outside it by the main road was a huge apartment complex that was heavily Section 8 subsidized. What a dump. It actually looks decent from the outside, but the apartments themselves are falling apart. I remember a couple of meth addicts did a home invasion in broad daylight in one of those apartments. They weren’t satisfied with merely robbing the woman inside, so they tortured her and cut a couple of her fingers off before they left.
Some of these types are seriously floating the idea of eliminating private landlords. Because not enough Americans are living in falling-apart, lead-poisoned rat traps.
It’s like the Great Society all over which didn’t turn out very well.
So what? Cover important shit like Michelle is going to be on the Today show next week, and isn’t Megan so cute in khakis?
Strzok to Page: “I made your edits”

let the heads roll.
I remember when Flynn was first indicted and i overheard one of my co-workers talking about how she was glad that someone was going down for what happened (TBF to her, this was the height of the “Russian Collusion” story). I wonder if she will A) even hear about this. and B) Feel glad that someone is going down for railroading this guy or Feel sad because we know he is obviously guilty, and that he’s getting off on a “Technicality”.
If it doesn’t come from the NPC media, it’s a safe bet she won’t hear about it.
She’ll be one of those people who upon hearing it from others will ask for a ‘citation’ and then refute the citation based on the source they may not like.
NPC for NPC is how they operate.
I hate when they play that game. They try to dismiss and discredit sources like WikiLeaks (who have never been caught lying or misrepresenting anything) but immediately believe anything that comes from the mouth of documented liars like Clapper, Comey, Mueller, Clinton, and so on.
The fact that FBI interviews are dependent on agent notes instead of two separate audio recordings stored in separate locations is a fucking travesty in any case. This only serves to illustrate how broken the FBI procedures are.
That they are accepted as gospel and not laughed out of the courtrooms is a travesty of justice.
They’re the creme de la creme of moral actors. Why wouldn’t you trust them implicitly?
Yeah, you should be able to simply point that out in court and get anything they say discredited completely.
Shit. It just hit me that’s exactly what Comey’s memos after meeting with Trump were. No wonder he expected those to be treated as transcripts, not uncorroborated Dear Diary entries.
I’m hoping that this new reported grand jury manages to get a few of these guys in a vice. Because I’m quite sure that once they start climbing the ladder and the question becomes “what did Obama know, and when did he know it”, Mr. Comey is just exactly the kind of weasel who has a memo filed away that documents exactly when Obama approved this operation, and exactly how.
I think there’s two directions to go from “This [FBI, DOJ, whatever] is an institution that is vitally important and needs to be protected.” I think a lot of their insiders believe that, so the question is, which way do they go.
The swamp creatures go the direction of “And therefor anything that threatens its legitimacy and status needs to be buried.
The other direction is “And therefor any bad actors have to be rooted out so that they don’t delegitimize the institution.” Here’s hoping Barr and his prosecutor are the latter.
Getting back to the pc after subway phone typing I am gland [sic] of English language redundancy
I only get the avatars on my phone. You were the guy with the cat but photo, right?
If you are going to have an honor guard armed with pikes shouldn’t they also be in armor? Modern dress uniforms and pikes don’t work. Swiss, you need to show China how this is supposed to look.
Thanks
I’ve decided I want Trump to be re-elected, so long as the Dems increase their House majority and take the Senate (all three things looking likely now).
I think that would be a disaster. Without a Republican Senate to tamp down the
good intentionsmost moronic activist urges of a Congress being goaded farther and farther down the road to Hell, we’re doomed.Oh we’re doomed. I think a win by Trump and a decent showing by the Republicans gets us to 2024 before the war starts.
Or it starts the war ala Lincoln
Hillary blames her 2016 loss on “dark web” videos. Mark Steyn is very funny.
Is it any wonder the DNC leaked like a sieve when she was around? The woman is a technophobe/idiot of the highest order.
-1 Seth Rich
She sounds like she is seriously deranged. I think it’s a combination of the embarrassment of losing to Donald Trump and being surrounded by yes-men and yes-womyn who are (rightly) afraid to tell her she’s wrong on anything.
It’s a combo of her health, being permanently pickled with alcohol all day every day, and dementia + terminal TDS.
Imagine if she did get the nerve to run against Trump again, it will finish her off, they’ll toss her into the back of that van with one shoe off for the last time.
Poor Ross. Got sent up the river by govt people like that.
It seems to me that she regards maintaining security of information to be an issue for underlings to worry about. As if being one of the “smart people” and having authority gives one a power to push your way past all that effort and mundane practice. She just doesn’t seem to get that e-mail can be read by anybody with the skills and resources to go after it.
I have to believe that deep down she knows Comey’s comments one week out from election day is what cost her the swing states. But Comey is a current hero to the TDS crowd, so she needs to blame others (except herself, of course.)
My my, Hillary. Just like that great Republican conspiracy, Russian agents, and things wiped with a cloth, the Dark Web simply does not exist. Now, back to your vodka and tonic, and piss off.
Finally out of bed at 10:30. Nice to sleep in. Cup a Joe, then going to put on some sausage patties.

I no longer have the ability to sleep in. Or rather, 08:00 is about the latest I can stay in bed until, regardless of what time I go to bed.
Hey Nep’ – just thought I’d let you know I figured out my Nintendo problem and fixed it for the most part. I think talking it through with you kicked loose some ideas which lead to a solution. Thanks!
Glad to hear you were able to get it fixed. All I did was spitball some ideas (it’s part of what comes from decades of IT and systems troubleshooting).
You know how it is when you’re stuck on a tech problem – just talking it through with somebody helps to kick ideas into place which you should have been thinking about.
The other end of that conundrum is spending undue hours on your own trying to figure out some trivial non-issue and getting nowhere.
Neph wrote yesterday of the joy of getting the 0 and 1 lined out.
Takes a special type. I had to scan a document yesterday, hadn’t done it in a while, and spent five minutes infuriated by my system when the only problem was that the default setting was “feed tray 1” which I never use. Five minutes. And there’s not so much as a cold idle screw on that scanner anywhere.
I guess with that jug-eared dolt for a father, and the vacuous mother, this shouldn’t be so much of a surprise.
Maybe. It seems like his brother is relatively stable. I think they let Harry act like a “cuck” because it really doesn’t matter. It’s William who’s going to be king and, therefore, it’s he who has to keep up appearances.
“Meghan has joined The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust and One Young World to look at how young leaders are driving meaningful change for empowering women.”
By marrying princes?
An admirable strategy on the part of the royal household. Give the girl something to do she feels like she’s important and is kept too busy to get her nose tucked in with people looking to leverage her to push their agendas.
It’s all a Massive LARP game played by a group of European families. Gosh i’m so glad we got rid of the monarchy…
Meh. I’m a republican and don’t much care for monarchies. But, I do get it. If you have the right monarchs, you have someone the most of the country can rally around despite their various disagreements. Of course, the risk is you wind up with someone like Charles or Harry taking the throne.
As Frank Drebin said, “No matter how silly the idea of having a queen seems to us, as Americans we must be courteous, gracious hosts.”
I have no problem not being an Ass to people who are her subjects, and I think the Queen seems to be a nice person. But i’m not going to hold special deference for the Royal Families. We kicked them out 200 years ago, and deserve only common courtesy that i would extend anyone else.
Yep. I don’t understand the bowing and curtsy’ing and “your majesty” bullshit.
Eh, its her title. We call foreign prime ministers “Prime Minister”, even though they aren’t our Prime Minister.
The bowing, etc. goes beyond common courtesy, in my book.
Saw this at Instapundit:
Truth.
Oh, poor Meghan … American, half-black, divorced, actress, older than Harry, and, worst of all … a commoner.
The POC romance writing community was absolutely swooning that one of “theirs” was the princess at the ball and “made it,” which I thought was BS because she lowered herself into that golden cage, lowered herself to tow a strict and nit-very-pleasant lion. You saw what the press did to Diana and you’re okay getting in it and now you complain about it?
Then the other Twitter I follow (hotep, black chill Malcolm X but capitalist pig types) that generally wonders why black folk pander for white folks’ approval and their stuff instead of building its own wealth and community, went apeshit wondering why it’s so dreamy that one of “theirs” was accepted into a privileged monarchy of white people.
The juxtaposition of those two Twitter streams was surreal.
Well, yeah. Mixing American-style celebrities with monarchy is just a dumb idea. Monarchs aren’t supposed to be just “super-A-list” celebrities. They’re supposed to be something transcendent beyond that. They’re supposed to be the national ideal and, to some extent, personification. That’s a whole different game than celebrity. If you’re a celebrity, the key is fitting in with “the beautiful people”, being part of the in-crowd. The whole woke stardom spiel is just a facet of that. They’re woke because that’s the fashionable thing to be. And not being woke will mean risking not being one of the cool people. But, a monarch is supposed to be above that. A monarch is supposed to understand that “the beautiful people” and the in-crowd are still below him or her. And the monarch’s role is to stand-in for the entire people. I really don’t think a celebrity can ever really understand that.
How can I look important? I got it, Climate change! Gender equality! It’s never been done before! Pompous self obsession and attention seeking.
“Are you miserable because you’re sick, or are you sick because you’re miserable?”
And the answer is…..
Yes!
Find that thing that makes you laugh. You’re problems will still be there, but at least you’ll have a smile on your face.
This is always excellent advice.
Clapper seems a bit shook up. Not to be confused with “literally shaking”.
Is that the guy who played Yoda in those Star Wars movies?
All shook down.
The sad thing is that nothing will happen to any of those people, no matter how guilty they are. I mean a few low level guys or business associates might go down, but Clapper and his deep state buddies, not a damn thing will happen to them no matter how guilty they are of anything.
It would be better if justice were actually served. But, maybe having a Clapper be discredited and his allies kept away from the levers of power might be enough to ask.
I liked this version better
I’m not sure what criminal activity may have prompted this.
Deny, deny, deny.
Now do the “impeachment” proceedings, you sociopathic piece of shit.
Yep, Clapper’s shook.
Seems like cutting off his fingers will just increase his desire to steal more sheep.

Maybe this was covered and maybe it is an American thing I don’t get but can someone explain this fucktardery? A official state twitter account tweeting this shit?

No, it’s New Jersey being New Jersey.
I was actually quite pissed when I had to deal with someone else at the pump because I ran too low on fuel shy of the southern border.
imagine pumping your own g- ??imagine pumping your own ga- ??? nvm can’t even say it ???? ??
What a little bitch.
That’s for the People of Walmart out in the huge states of Flyover and Redneck.
I’ve never seen a full service station here in MD. And I don’t think this is flyover. The only 2 states I have seen a full service station at in the past 30 years is NJ and it was either WA or OR, can’t remember.
Mobil used to offer full-service in NY – dunno if they do any more.
The funny thing is, is that I can never remember even once ever heard anyone outside that that guy, complain about pumping their own gas.
Imagine checking out your own groceries! The horror! I bet that guy has never even changed a tire in his entire life.
Those stupid machines won’t let me go as fast as a cashier, and have a smaller grocery capacity.
Depends on where you’re checking out and who’s doing it. People at Fresh Market are fast, at the Asian market, they’re blazing fast. But if you get in the line at our local supermarket and happen to get some zit faced teen, it goes like this:
Uhh, what is this?
Cilantro.
Uhh, what is this?
An avacado.
Uhh, what is this?
Jalapeno.
Uhh, what is this?
Really, are you kidding me, it’s a lime!
You have to pick your cashier approriately, to be sure.

No, no, no. I don’t want to leave the car when it’s hot, cold, snowing, raining, dark or dangerous. I don’t want to smell like gas. I support people having a job. I don’t use self service checkouts either. It’s a very small luxury. The only ones who will benefit are the owners.

Poor, poor snowflake, run to your safe space now.
Ellen, You only smell like gas if you manage to spill it all over yourself. Also, I’ve never met a service station where there wasn’t a rain canopy over the fuelling bays. These usually have lights on them that allow you to see what you’re doing.
Hot or cold – now you’re just a whiner.
But, but… that stuff is the job of them poor brown folk that I love so much!
Funny, the guy in Joisey was a fat italian.
They learned it from Trump.
Fuck NJ. That is all.
It has to be the asshole of the world. Worst state ever, can we give it to Mexico or Europe?
New Jersey is the only state that doesn’t trust people enough to pump their own gasoline into their vehicles.
Having been to Jersey they may be right.
For sure having them leave their car is bad for everyone else around them. Also, having them in their car is bad for everyone else on the highway. Let’s just nuke it from space.
Pugs kicked off flight
“Flight DI7181 from Gatwick to Austin had not yet departed when the captain took the decision to offload emotional support dogs and their two owners at the gate due to the dogs showing signs of distress in the cabin,” Anders Lindström, a spokesperson for Norwegian Air, told USA TODAY in a statement, adding, “The safety and security of our passengers and crew is always our number one priority.”
Good. I’m tired of the trend for people to treat the entire world as if it were their living room and everyone else in it as the help.
I was in the security line at the airport last year around Christmas, and there must’ve been 12-15 people with dogs, most of them college students. I asked one college student, in the politest way possible, basically “What the hell’s the deal with the dog?” She said something along the lines of, “You just get a note from the doctor. It’s cool.”
*urge to kill rising*
Oh it gets better than that. A client of mine had a nightmare tenant with an emotional support pitbull. The dog tried to attack anyone who came within reach and the owner thought it was hilarious, but some slimeball shrink had written him a diagnosis. The house was a duplex and my client had 2 tenants break their lease in the other unit (he let them because he understood) before he finally managed to persuade the asshole to move.
Poison.
Reason #45 I don’t fly anymore.
This stuff is so far out of hand it’s ridiculous. Around here the odds that you’ll *not* see someone with a dog inside a public building of any kind are lower than the odds that you will. I remember not too long ago when I worked in the restaurant biz that having an animal in your establishment was a really easy way to get in deep shit with the health inspector. Now you’ve got people strolling up to the bar with their yellow Lab or carrying a chihuahua in a bag like it’s no big deal. Meanwhile, restaurants are banning nuts because, apparently, in the past six years or so people have developed nut allergies so severe that if they’re in a building in which a nut used to be they’ll fucking die. But waving your Yorkie around at the buffet is totes fine.
Honk fucking honk.
But waving your Yorkie around at the buffet is totes fine.
Euphemism CONFIRMED

This nonsense needs to stop.

Credible source
A senior government official appointed by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos resigned Thursday, saying the current student loan system is “fundamentally broken” and calling for billions of dollars in debt to be forgiven.
A. Wayne Johnson was hired as the chief operating officer of the Office of Federal Student Aid, which manages the country’s $1.6 trillion outstanding student loan portfolio. He later worked in a strategic role, directing how student loans are serviced for borrowers.
——-
Johnson told The Wall Street Journal he reached his conclusion after watching climbing defaults and realizing that a majority of student debt will never be repaid.
Indeed, five years into repayment, half of student loan borrowers haven’t paid even $1 toward their debt’s principal, according to the Education Department’s own data. And 40% of student loan borrowers could default by 2023, according to an analysis by the Brookings Institution.
——-
“Wayne Johnson got an inside look at how student loans are hurting borrowers, and he could not deny the evidence: America’s student loan program is a massive failed experiment that is hurting borrowers and our economy,” said Julie Margetta Morgan, a fellow at the liberal Roosevelt Institute.
Johnson joins a chorus of government officials and presidential contenders calling for student debt cancellation.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has proposed canceling $640 billion of the debt. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said he’d erase all $1.6 trillion of it. At a recent campaign event, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., hinted that she’d be rolling out a plan to forgive the student loan debt of families who earn less than $100,000 a year.
“Johnson’s plan is more expensive than Warren’s but less expensive than Sanders,’” said Mark Kantrowitz, a higher education expert.
Yet Johnson stands apart from the others in a more critical way. “It’s the first Republican support for widespread student loan forgiveness,” Kantrowitz said. “That makes it a bipartisan issue.”
I don’t think anybody disputes the notion that the system is broken. How to fix it is a matter of some debate.
What happens to all those “assets”? Whose books are they on? How does the accounting work? Most importantly, do you just call for a do-over, and re-start the same broken system, or will there be sweeping reform (as in, wiping out government involvement/guarantees)? What will happen to the zombie colleges? Where will their faculties and staffs go? How will they eat?
He’s not wrong, but the solution isn’t to cancel the debt. I wouldn’t be against the idea of allowing those loans to be more easily discharged as part of a bankruptcy, but then you’ve got to live with what that will do to the loan market. I think you’d find that lenders start getting a lot pickier about handing teenagers $100k for a BA in Art History if the government won’t step in to bail them out when they default.
My solution:
1. Cancel the program, no more guanteed loans.
2. Student has 2 options:
A. Pay debt
B. Cancel debt, with appropriate hit on credit record, with debt to be split evenly between 4 sources:
Student, issueing bank, school, and feds.
The Feds have basically taken over the student loan market. They not only guarantee the debt, they mostly own it now, too. The schools have already been paid, so the only thing debt cancellation would do at this point is wipe them from the Federal books. That’s going to create inflation, hurt the fedgov’s credit rating a little bit, and increase the already mounting cost of financing fedgov’s operations. However, in the grand scheme of things, it likely won’t be that severe. The real question is, what happens next? Is college effectively free from that point onward, or does the debt spiral just start all over again?
Oh, and the grifters at Sallie Mae will lose their jobs.
I don’t understand the political ploy of student loan forgivness. It is a policy that favors rich privledged kids over the poorer types who didn’t go to college and against older folk who have finished college and paid off or didn’t pay off loans. Student Loan debt only seems to be a problem for those who foolishly aquired the debt. Why do the democrats push this so much?
Because their base is now mostly young, privileged, college-educated people.
Because a titanic wealth-transfer from Gen Xers to Millennials is only fair.
Buttigieg actually had a fairly sensible response to the student loan thing, which was something along the lines of “college grads are a wealthier group, so I can’t get behind a program that would basically be a wealth transfer from poor to rich“.
Most importantly, do you just call for a do-over, and re-start the same broken system,
The tool who resigned isn’t calling for that. In classic government fashion, in fact, he is calling for good money to be thrown after bad.
Good riddance.
The feds taking over student loans was part of quantitative easing. The Fed moved all that debt onto its books, which makes it a federal obligation and increased the money supply, is my understanding. Taking it off the Fed’s books will tighten the money supply, I believe, causing interest rates to go up. As a contraction of the money supply, it might be anti-inflationary. Not sure – “high finance” at that level makes my head hurt.
“Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has proposed canceling $640 billion of the debt. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said he’d erase all $1.6 trillion of it. At a recent campaign event, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., hinted that she’d be rolling out a plan to forgive the student loan debt of families who earn less than $100,000 a year.”
Yeah, easy for you shitheads since you won’t be the ones paying for it, and someone IS going to pay for it, the tax payers.
My understanding is the official has called for the fed. gov. to get out of the student loan business entirely (great).
He has also said he favors up to a $50,000 tax credit for those who have already paid their loans. SLD aside, I suppose that makes the whole debt-forgiveness thing a little more tolerable for those of us who, you know, have been paying down our damn loans (I left law school (2016) with $70,000 in student loan debt; now it’s down to $32,000). I would still get hosed on the $20,000 I managed to pay. Why should the asshole with $250,000 in student debt whose never made a payment get all of it wiped out?
Also, would the feds count student-loan forgiveness as taxable income? How will it affect individual credit scores?
And it raises the question of what other types of loans might be “forgiven” by the government. What’s that going to do to interest rates for those? Once you establish that the government can alter loan agreements ex post facto, you’re kind of opening the floodgates. Is there going to be a movement to forgive mortgage loans? Auto loans? Where does it end?
It seems like “progressive” policies are designed as a hard slap in the face to those who made the right life decisions…
Took out massive student loans without being reasonably sure that you’d have an income sufficient to pay them off? We’ll just tax people who skipped college and those who worked to pay off their loans.
You want a raise? We’ll just force the government to raise your wage to the level of those who have been there for years and worked hard to get to $15 per hour.
Came into the country illegally? You’ll just be handed all the benefits of citizenship, the same as those who spent years doing things the legal way.
Worked hard and saved your whole life to build wealth to pass onto your children and grandchildren? We’ll tax it away because inheriting money is not faaaaair.
Presidents throwing out first pitches
W and Jimmy C are the only ones with the ‘ol pepper”.
Obama should be ashamed of himself as per usual.
The transition from a ceremonial toss from the stands to the modern on the field hoopla is interesting. A bit symbolic of the increasing interference of the Feds with life.
