I vaguely remember seeing that, or part of it, somewhere. Probably on a flight. My memory was that it looked like the director wanted to make some kind of 1960’s beach movie but was given a script and budget for a WWII epic so he wedged as much of his boy-girl romance story into the given script as possible.

I was watching that on the news on the TV in the gym. I saw them dumping water from a fire hose on the roof. Hm… isn’t a roof designed to shunt water off the structure? Shouldn’t they be dumping that into the structure somewhere below the roof? The roof tiles weren’t going to catch fire so I’m not sure what the point was.
The report says it was the replica constructed in 1992 that burned. It is unfortunate, but surprising they didn’t include sufficient fire suppression. The Japanese are good with the fire codes.
Almost all “historic” buildings in Japan have been rebuilt at one time or another in the centuries since they were first constructed. AFAIK very few old buildings in Japan are as old as you might believe when visiting them. I have seen some specific beams in historic buildings in Kyoto which were the original wood from centuries ago but those are rare.
In the case of the Shuri castle I’m pretty sure it was just a structure similar to the original castle, built on/near the original site. It’s been decades since I visited it so the details in my mind are thin.
