Some asshole kid, who got his gun illegally, shot five people and then tried to kill himself but failed yesterday in California. It all happened in the span of a few minutes and all happened in a small area. But the cops still managed to trot out their ACPs and rifles and patrol around the entire area for hours like it was a war zone or something.
Does this count as interstellar racism? Or would it only count if it had been a white dwarf stopping a black hole from doing something? I want to stay ahead of the curve here before the SJWs set the narrative.

Students must have been outside the gun free zone otherwise this couldn’t have happened.
Not seeing how armed teachers would have helped here, the odds that an armed teacher would have their gun on their person and be in the quad and would have been able to draw fire, and injure the shooter sufficiently to end the threat before he cleared the jam and got the extra rounds off are small at best. There are certainly some scenarios where an armed teacher would be of benefit but this shooting did not last long enough to likely be one of them.
Outside of this however even taking the massively inflated statistics presented in the article that there have been 30 school shootings in the US this year as true and then inflating the by 50% would give your average school a mean time between shooting incidents of 2000 years. Events that rare are barely even worth planning for and do not justify arming a million plus teachers (with ~100k schools in the US 1 million armed teachers still only gives an average of 10 armed teachers per school)

Yes, except that that is kind of the whole idea behind criminal law. It is all very well to decry the desire for vengeance but the move from private vengeance and the feuds, mistakes, and injustice it engenders to justice subject to law and administered by the State rather than the victim or their kin is one of the most important conditions for the rise of civilizations. Look at areas where the law doesn’t provide just vengeance. The alternative is not a vengeance free society, the alternative is honor rapes and murders and lynchings.
Sadly, necessity quickly becomes an excuse for incompetence, corruption, overreach, and a whole host of other ills. Sometimes it can seem as though the “civilization” it brought is just a shared delusion hiding the continued practice of barbarism.
I understand your point and our system is flawed, but even a cursory glance at actual private justice honor societies makes it clear that ours is infinitely superior even with all its flaws and corruptions. Look at Afghanistan, almost all of Africa, much of South America, and others. People punish rape by raping the perpetrator’s female relatives. They kill their sisters and daughters for bringing shame on the family. They accuse unpopular people of witchcraft and burn them alive. They decide that unpopular religious or ethnic groups must be the perpetrator when any crime occurs and go on genocidal sprees.

I’ll admit that cases like this make me want to support the death penalty, but I don’t know where to draw the line on what deserves it and what doesn’t.
I have no ethical qualms about executing people who commit horrible crimes like this. What turned me against the death penalty though was the amount of people on death row who were being cleared by DNA testing. It was one of the things that turned me pretty much into a complete libertarian. Made me realize that the same State that can’t be trusted to dole out welfare without fucking up gloriously also can’t be trusted with an actual life and death decision.
Like I said, I don’t know how you can create a system where a monster like this kid (and the one that got me was the woman who drowned her kids in a car) can get the death penalty and double plus weed out the innocent.

Yes. Marty McSorley chased a guy who he thought had “taken liberties” and then got him in the head with a stick. I thought it was a bridge too far that they prosecuted him. The NHL had seen a lot worse (historically speaking), but it was right at the time when the NHL was cracking down and going away from the old Charlestown Chiefs mentality.

Damarious Randall was the one ejected earlier for the helmet to helmet hit with the bleeding receiver. I’m not going to argue with that ejection, but I don’t think it was a malicious hit. From the angle he was coming in, I could see him thinking the receiver made the catch. I can’t excuse him lowering the helmet to lead with though.
My breakdown on the brawl. You had a late hit from Garrett, trash talking on the ground (from both sides reportedly), Rudolph trying to pull Garrett’s helmet off (at this point there should already have been flags on the ground, and refs breaking this up). Then Garrett pulls of Rudolph’s helmet (up to this point, I can see defending Garrett). You then have two Steelers try to push Garrett back, at which point he swings the damned helmet at Rudolph, hitting him. The two Steelers start punching Garrett in the face, knock him to the ground, and Pouncey starts kicking him in the head. Ogunjobi comes up to break it up, knocks down Rudolph, and tries to break up the fight.
I predict Garrett suspended for 6-12 games, Pouncey suspended for 1 game, and Ogunjobi suspended for 1-2 games (this one I would argue is unfair, but I think the league wants to send a message).
As I said upthread, discipline for the Browns has been a problem all season, and for that I blame Kitchens (and Mayfield to a lesser extent).
Well, they signed Kareem Hunt, who, unlike Tyreek Hill, actually did what he was accused of doing.
Hunt served an 8-game suspension. I don’t condone what he did, but that’s what the NFL levied and this is his second chance.

Back in the ’90s Memphis State and (I think) Arkansas were playing and there was a bench clearing brawl. The last time, I was at a local pub, maybe a month ago and I overheard a lady at the next table say something like ‘and I was discombobulated’. And I’m thinking ‘wow’, I’ve been on this planet all these years and never heard that word actually ever used before in a real life situation.
I say it out loud whenever the situation warrants it, and at least once this week. My whole current life situation is discombobulating. Discombobulated is a great word because it is neutral, not good or bad.
Which is to say, bad stress is stressful. But good stress is also stressful and there is little physiological distance between the two.
My work yesterday, started yesterday morning at 9am and concluded at 2am this morning, and started again this morning at 7am. The only break has a quick lunch at my desk, a quick dinner at my desk, a commute home, 4 hours of sleep last night , and quick breakfast at my desk.
I don’t feel discombobulated. More like, ‘come on 5pm, I’m headed down to the pub for beers’.
No, that’s not discombobulated, that’s just temporary hell. This, too, shall pass. Like a kidney stone, but it will pass.
Monday: Brother comes into town, which is always an Event. Whole fam goes out to eat (not routine schedule).
Tuesday: Mom has cardiac ablation (ugh), but it fixes her severe atrial fibrillation and 2 flutters (yay!). I spend the night at the hospital. I accidentally yanked her bursitic elbow, which was painful, but apprently jerked it in sich a way that it took her pain away and gave her full mobility back.
Wednesday: Brother buys a car, wants to register it in Missouri. Husband and I participate in this adventure. I go back to the hospital to await mom’s discharge, which is 4 hours later that they said, but exactly what I predicted.
Thursday: I go out to run 1/2 hour’s worth of errands. Brother got his rental car towed. I carted him around for the rest of the day getting that straightened out, then went and looked at a rental property. One of my errand contacts doesn’t show.
Friday: Today, DMV. Brother goes back home. I still have errands to run (purging, taking shit to the thrift shop, packing).
All things to good ends, but I have clients to tend to. I have a book to publish on December 1 and it’s only half proofread, and haven’t even been able to sit down at my computer. Routine just blown.
Ooops. Didn’t mean to write a novel. Note to self: Nobody really cares.

Ah, yes. I kind of did that to my husband last night. I had put something on the calendar weeks ago for last night. I planned my whole day around that event (trade school orientation for XX). We had discussed it three times earlier in the week. We never discussed logistics (my fault? I don’t know). He forgot and got home (running errands on the way home) too late to go, so I was pissed off.
I assumed he would get the calendar notification and plan accordingly, then come home on time and we could go. Didn’t happen that way.
So I guess it was my fault for not arranging the logistics and confirming the schedule.
I don’t know about your relationship dynamics, but my husband would not have remained silent if I had run down what he didn’t get done of I’d kept him doing other things all week.
My wife is dealing with a) helping her dad run his company while he is supposed to be handing the reins over to the new manager (something which he is allergic to) and b) dealing with her mom who stopped eating a couple weeks ago and went from assisted living to a hospital and being fed by IV.
She has enough on her plate emotionally so I give her as much space as possible.
Oh that is rough. No wonder, and what a good hubby to understand. Mine would do the same.

Yes, and there’s a lot that can be done with standard openings and implied threats/support based on build orders and the like. For me, it’s a matter of separating what happens on the board and in negotiations with the real world. Sounds like you should be playing as one of the less civilized nations. Your ability to wage war in that game is restricted by your culture – if you are a warmonger civ (vikings, mongols) you can launch wars to grab whatever you can get. If you lead a nation that believes in rules of ownership beyond mere might, you must follow them (or at least pretend to – fabricating claims and murdering opponents is open to all).
History says, that’s still laughable. Sure the war started trying to decide who rightfully owned plot A, but once my sabaton was upon your neck, I could dictate terms beyond the excuse that started the fight. Or just execute you, your entire family, and install my own puppet vassal.
But that would break the theme of the game to allow that. The game does a splendid job of modeling that. Yes, it is frustrating to run into those limitations, but if they didn’t have them you’d never have to deal with the espionage and diplomacy systems (i.e. every game would play as a viking or mongol run, but half the fun is trying out the different cultures and dealing with their strengths, weaknesses, and limitations).

I am suddenly reminded of a local bread company. It had a reliable profit margin and stable demand for their product but kept getting dumped by owners because they couldn’t manage to make it more profitable due to market saturation with competition. They’re still in business, still turning a modest profit, but have gone through multiple frustrated owners who can’t appreciate reliable returns.
If you can’t turn a profit with a punitive wealth tax, you don’t really deserve to be in business.

States that sued over the administration’s settlement with Austin-based Defense Distributed said that allowing people to print untraceable guns at home would put law enforcement officers at risk. The company argued that posting the information was a matter of free speech.
“Given the agency’s prior position regarding the need to regulate 3D-printed firearms and the CAD files used to manufacture them, it must do more than simply announce a contrary position,” Lasnik wrote in his decision.
Lacking such an explanation, the reversal was an “arbitrary and capricious” violation of the federal Administrative Procedure Act, according to the ruling.
The administration of President Barack Obama had blocked the company’s effort to publish the files for years, arguing that it would violate an arms-export law. But the State Department in June 2018 gave Defense Distributed the green light by settling a lawsuit with the company in a Texas court. The company’s website called it “our most famous victory.”
Chad Flores, a lawyer for Defense Distributed in Houston, said the company will appeal.
“The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech from all abridgment, including indirect censorship efforts like this one,” Flores said in a statement. “And states aren’t allowed to commandeer the federal government to do their unconstitutional bidding, even under the guise of statutory technicalities.”
That “puts law enforcement officers at risk” argument is so infuriating it makes my brain ache.

White House unveils rules requiring online disclosure of hospital prices

“List” price versus negotiated in the healthcare world is a really complicated sticky issue. I’m not sure a White House rule can cut across all the conflicting layers of federal and state regulations.
The hospital knows all their negotiated prices. If customer puts on insurance info, it should take them to correct amounts.
I just went through this with an MRI. There was a $1200 difference between two scenarios. It was nice to be able to price compare and I didn’t give a shit who actually performed it.
Medicare does a lot to fuck up the pricing system just by itself.

I saw that. Its bullshit. A brief overview:
Hospitals have something called a “chargemaster” which lists “prices” for every single frickin’ thing. Its a relic of the days when hospitals were regulated like utilities and had to get their price increases approved. It had a brief period of declining relevance when insurance contracts were for a percent of chargemaster pricing. Now, everybody gets paid as a percent of Medicare rates. Nobody, but nobody, pays chargemaster pricing. Worst case, you are uninsured and your nominal bill is based on chargemaster, we give you a huge discount and a payment plan to try to get something.
Chargemaster price transparency, then, is completely meaningless. The prices that matter are the prices that the third party payors negotiate (or impose). Around half of all hospital bills are paid by Medicare or Medicaid. For Medicaid, there is literally zero copay, deductible, or any payment by the patient. Medicare varies, depending on whether you have straight Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. But, government payors don’t negotiate prices, they impose them, and that entire price list is published by the government already.
That leaves commercial insurers. They, too negotiate prices with hospitals. Those prices are confidential. To the extent we are forced to publish those prices, it will either have no effect, or lead to some increase as the hospitals who have low-paying commercial plans see that the local market will actually bear higher pricing, and negotiate accordingly.
“Price transparency” assumes the patients shop for hospitals by price and/or negotiate pricing. Practically nobody does. Pricing is negotiated by insurers. The patient share is dictated by the insurance plan, and is downstream from the price negotiated by their insurance company. Publishing managed care pricing in any way will change the dynamic of the negotiation between hospitals and insurers, but in ways that are currently illegal under anti-trust law – business-to-business competitors aren’t allowed to tell each other what their0 negotiated pricing is because if they do, pricing goes up, not down.
The fine is $300/day, or just over $100K/year. Probably less than it would cost us to actually comply.

Price to the consumer is mainly affected by two things: in-network or not, or in-hospital or not.
Once you hit your deductible (easy to do with hospital care), the deductible is irrelevant.
Your co-pay is a co-pay of the price negotiated by your insurer.
The only thing that matters is the price to you. Which is a function of your coverage, not hospital prices. Publishing hospital prices is meaningless to patients.
Now, good functionality on what your out-of-pocket will be under your coverage is what people need. Publishing hospital prices is irrelevant to that.

Some Boise High School students face possible criminal and school consequences after a BB gun was discharged off-campus.
Boise Police said a report of shots fired came in at about noon. Officers found the suspects quickly and performed a high-risk traffic stop.
Five people were detained from the car without incident. Officers searched the car and found two BB guns.
“The occupants, who were all juveniles, could potentially face misdemeanor crimes,” BPD said. “The investigation remains ongoing.”
As a precaution, two schools in the area were put in “shelter in place” mode but were never found to be in danger.
In a letter to parents, Boise High principal Robb Thompson said the gun was discharged while some students were on their lunch period.
There was no safety risk at school, Thompson said in the letter. The students are cooperating with Boise Police, he said.
