This is the time of year when I thank Yahweh several times a day that I’m not a goy. There is so much tacky and stupid shit associated with Christmas that I can’t believe that there isn’t a massive Christian die-off from sheer embarrassment. And the shit you put yourselves through… Well, I’ll take the day off and stay in doing something productive. Or non-productive but more fun than wrasslin’ with trailer trash at Walmart “holiday” sales.
But still, the birthdays keep coming, including one of the greatest writers in the English language; a guy with some interesting figures; the ultimate American voice; the best lisper in congressional history; one of the voices of my childhood who anticipated Al Yankovic; one of my favorite screenwriters; and a guy who keeps using that word.
News, yes, that’s what we’re here for.
Yeah, yeah, stabby stabby, but any news story that features Cressida Dick puts a smile on my face. Oh, and yes.
Don’t be stupid, be a smartie, come and join the Nazi Party!
This one-ups Trump for sure. Well done, old chap.
Really, with that name, he ought to be a lot bigger.
The lingering effects of slavery.
The economics geeeeenius speaks. Funny how it’s exactly the catchphrase Warren uses to avoid answering tough questions.
I know, it’s fashionable to bag on the Grateful Dead, but there was a period when they were cranking out some great songs. Phil Lesh was sort of like George Harrison, where he didn’t get to contribute many songs, but the ones he DID get on their albums… wow. And this particular one from arguably their best album is really speaking to me today.
“DiCaprio’s environmental organization has pledged $5 million to help protect the Amazon after fires destroyed large parts of the rainforest in July and August.”
They were clearing land to ranch cattle.

Journalism! How large? Percentage-wise? How does it compare to every other year?
Who cares, right!
It’s the most since 2013.
(Don’t look beyond 2013!!)
And Fox is linking to the Guardian for support now?!
Hmmm, seems like clearing land would reduce forest fires. Grassland fires, maybe, but smaller and less vicious
Exactly. I liked the bit about ‘how the fires started’.
The farmers walked out there with a box of matches, that’s how.

Wouldn’t profits from the sale of cotton be more appropriate?
First, they need to give me back my car.
Well that’s one way to get people to stop using Pot.
pretty tough
I just spit coffee
Me too.
Hint: The farming of cotton in the US is subsidized.
A Saturday equivalent to Black Friday? How about Sara’s Sister Saturday? (That’s actually a Crayola Crayon color.)
Ok, maybe it’s not Crayola.
Scarlett and Grey Saturday. O-H!
I-O!!
Go Bucks. Beat TTUN!
That’s all I got today.
O! H!
I-O!!!!!!
Obligatory AND historic!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the original clip of that. Thank you!
Sweet:)
Awesome find!
Nice!

Go Bucks!
Six years ago today you and your lovely wife were in my kitchen cooking us all a belated thanksgiving dinner while I tried to get the wife and Liberty out of the hospital in time for the game.
Thanks, man. We miss you guys.
You’re the reason the goyim think we want to change the name of Thanksgiving.
It’s “Small Business Saturday.”
I will be patronizing the small business at the foot of the hill upon which my house is perched in order to obtain a submarine sammich that should get us through the football games.
Please be safe
I will.
I am stir crazy with not having my DL reinstated yet. Doctor put the “ok” paperwork in to the state, but they’re in no hurry.
So Im entirely dependent and have no freedom since my seizure in July.
I feel for you. My wife is nearly losing her mind. She still can’t walk and getting in to see an orthopedist is like pulling teeth. On top of that I am exhausted.
Suthen! Good to see you, but sorry to hear about the rough going. Hope things – mainly people – get better ASAP.
MOJO JOJO!!!
From black to small… ?
Old guy music
Yeah, if that’s one thing it’s old.
Nice listening music all the same.
Noice! That’s my Sunday morning listening of choice – “Vox Choral” on the SiriusXM classical channel until 11 a.m. EST, then into “Millennium of Music” (anything pre-Bach) on the same channel until noon.
What’s with the use of pronouns in this article?
https://www.archyde.com/miss-hitler-the-muse-of-the-frustrated-italian-nazi-group/
You mean the fourth link today? Links have no pronouns.
It’s about the same person. Anyway, that article alternately calls her he and she.
Whether you’re angry about sexism, racism, poverty, Brexit, capitalism or climate change, there’s a fraternity waiting to hear from you. Rage is par for the course, but using your aggrieved sense of injustice to try to turn things around is an altogether less cathartic journey. But perhaps we should all try harder to adopt the latter.
Wallowing in rage and self-pity is good for you. Keep it up, sister.
..and please continue to rage at the system by not taking the pills they give you for the high blood pressure which will be the obvious outcome. You go sister!

I may have mentioned this before….if you dig deep enough every single leftist eventually admits to being nuttier than a squirrel turd. They all have a diagnosis or/and are on some kind of psychotropic medication.
They aren’t nuts from feminism…it’s the other way about.
“Simmons said the source of the funds was especially appropriate, citing the “war on drugs” that has led to increased incarceration rates among African-Americans, particularly for marijuana-related offenses….
Supporters of the program say it will help address the lingering effects of slavery and discrimination, per the Pioneer Press.”
Well, which is it?
“The idea of reparations to compensate the descendants of slaves has gained traction among progressives while a majority of conservatives oppose it.”
Democrats opposed the Reconstruction Amendments. Then progressives started the war on drugs.
the lingering effects of slavery
It’s been 170 years, give it a fucking rest. Entire ethnicities have gone from practically nonexistent in the United States, to hated, to accepted, to commonplace and indistinguishable from the rest, in less time than has passed since the abolition of slavery.
(154, 170, who’s counting?)
You still have to factor in Jim Crow, which was a significant hurdle to integration. It’s been more like 54 years.
Yes, my alternate response was to quote the “slavery and discrimination” part and say one of these words is doing a lot more work than the other. But even then, and even though some discrimination persists*, this reasoning is largely proffered by people who’ve never lived under Jim Crow, or the unnamed but nearly equivalent era of racism and persecution north of the Mason-Dixon Line. If the face of racism to you is white progressives trying to impose their gilded fantasies upon your school districts, and white conservatives forcing you to keep up your voter registration and show ID at the polls, with no grandfather clauses, then you’re not affected by the lingering effects of anything from the past so much as by the policies and proclivities of the present.
* = which is getting lost among the noise that is racism in the wider world
Well, as the Bard wrote, “What’s past is prologue.” That’s why the face of racism for me is gun “control” legislation.
Yup, the push to outlaw and/or regulate charter schools to death is another one.
Does Illinois really have to factor in Jim Crow?
Maybe they should also factor in the 100,000+ Illinois men who fought for the Union and 10,000+ who died. (hard to get a casualty breakdown by state)
Yes, of course. A second-order effect of the Great Migration was resentment among the White working class towards the ‘Negroes’ threatening their wages by increasing the supply of labor. During the early 1920s, there were many race riots in Northern American cities that were primarily about economics and labor competition. One of the most well known is the Chicago Race Riot of 1919. The severity of the riot was multiplied due to the relative inaction of the police, due to the fact that the riot was primarily led by the Irish and they were well represented in the police force.
Ok, Boomer.
‘threatening their wages by increasing the supply of labor”
Irish went through same thing. That’s how we got the minimum wage. Now it’s the Latinos.
I’ve been assured that a giant influx of cheap labor is good for everyone.
It is. But, again, one of the lessons of history is that some people like to throw hissy fits when faced with fair competition.
I have to admire the honesty of Alfred Deakin, when speaking in favor of the White Australia policy, let the mask drop when he said:
It’s also amusing to note that Deakin claimed the establishment of the White Australia policy was for the purpose of “social justice”.
Like the discrimination that if I retell a Chris Rock or Dave Chapelle joke at work and somebody whose ears it was not intended for overhears it, I lose my job and royally fuck up my career?
Or the kind where every time I go to a conference for work I get lectured on how all the country’s ills are because straight white man bad but don’t worry because the times they are a changin?
My great-great grandfather served in a Wisconsin volunteer infantry regiment, was wounded and died at age 46 from complications of his wounds. So, as far as I’m concerned, my family has paid any debt, and the reparations people can fuck right off.
Yeah but what about all the southern families. It doesn’t offset and white people still owe.
Show me how to quantify the amount owed by each family, taking into account intermarriage (both from regions, other nations and between ethnic groups) moving from area to area, and all the other variables, and we’ll talk.
Don’t worry my friend, Elizabeth Warren has a plan.
Well, the Dictator Bee is mostly assembled. Everything left has to do with the final pose. If its not too cold, I’ll basecoat it.
10.5″ wingspan? This thing is abnormally huge for a Warhammer mini.
Dammit. At some point, Thaddeus fell off my desk and his pistol hand is missing.
Did you cast that or purchase & assemble already-cast parts? Amazing detail work! (The references to “sprues” make me think you cast ’em yourself.)
I assemble from parts. They come on the sprue. This was built from parts taken from some 4-5 different models.
You must paint them yourself, yes?
Yes, the paint is my doing.
Respect!
“Disaster,” however, may be the perfect cat name.
Needz moar black kittehs. Yes, I’ve posted it before, but now that we’re officially into the Christmas season, I’ma use that as my cheap, tawdry excuse to link to this widdle guy, who will be sorely missed when he’s not under the tree this year. ***SNIFF!!!***
I read some article that black cats aren’t as popular now because they don’t look as good on Instagram.
Ugh.
Yeah black kittehs get undeserved bad press.
Mojo is a champion of black kittehs!
Yes I am the champion of black cats, but quite by accident. It would NEVER occur to me to not pick up a cat needing a home because it’s black.
Or a dog. Now, I don’t like dogs, but some of my characters do. My current heroine (Cods & Cuntes had a black cane corso guard dog (closest analog to a German shepherd I could find in 1420) she called her “big black bitch from hell.”
I will say this: I would take a calico cat over a black one based purely on aesthetics, but that’s not saying anything because I would take both cats. We don’t believe in adopting just one. They need playmates.
And you can’t get a good feel for their personalities just picking them up at the adoption place so that’s always luck of the draw.
I haven’t broached the subject, but now that he’s retired, Mr. GT might be more open to the idea of two kittehs. OTOH, now that he’s retired, HE’S more free to be the kitteh’s playmate.
When we go looking to adopt again (ASAP after Christmas,) I’m hoping for a place that can recommend a cat based on the behavior patterns we’d like. For instance, we’d like another of what Jackson Galaxy of My Cat From Hell calls a bush dweller. It would be good NOT to have a cat that’s constantly jumping up on the counters – or on the not-all-that-securely-perched surround speakers.
Get 2. One does get very lonely and without much to do and therefore more rambunctious. Littermates if you can.
Ours spent the first 6 months wrestling, fighting, and chasing each other. So adorbs.
Same with black greyhounds. WTF is wrong with people?
“Did you know that on average, black dogs, especially large black dogs, spend much more time waiting to be chosen for adoption than do light colored dogs. The same is true for black cats in shelters and rescues. This is a trend all over the country for all large black dogs, and it holds true for greyhounds.
In the adoption world, this is known as Black Dog Syndrome (BDS). In the greyhound breed, black is the second most prevalent color (after brindle), so we take a lot of black greyhounds into our adoption program. We have heard many reasons why people do not want to adopt a black greyhound. The one we remember particularly is the person who said they wanted a greyhound, any color but black, since black dogs are scary! We have also heard such statements that a black dog is not wanted because their black hair would show on the potential adopter’s light colored carpet—definitely not true! It is truly sad that this type of sentiment is out there, but it is a fact that we at BAGA have to face, as do all other adoption groups and animal shelters.”
https://bayareagreyhounds.org/adopt-a-black-greyhound/
their black hair would show on the potential adopter’s light colored carpet—definitely not true!
I have a black cat and I can say that this is wrong. The hair does show. However, carpet is easy to vacuum, and as long as you get the corners and edges too, it’s not a problem.
Yup. George had long hair – and hated to be brushed. We have cream-colored plush carpet. Still want another black cat.
we have a black cat, a white cat, and an orange cat (and others of various shades in between). There’s no way to hide the fur. I’ve just gotten used to going in to work with cat hair on my pants. We brush them every day, to no effect.
I think it’s true that it’s harder to get a good pic of a black cat.
Got a pretty good picture yesterday of the tortie sisters guarding the entrance to their territory (aka our bedroom). If I get time later I’ll post a link.
I had a black pitbull for many years. Just absolutely adorable. Found her abandoned and immediately fell in love with her and took her in.
Our mini-Aussie is black with white and brown highlights. She was the last of her litter, maybe due to her color or the bite mark on the back of hindquarters from a neighbor dog that got into the breeders yard. Which worked out just right for us & we’re still glad she wasn’t taken first.
Different hair than a greyhound, but it absolutely shows up on a light carpet. Or a dark one. Just have to use a vacuum cleaner. It’s not that difficult and totally worth it for the bundle of fur that’s currently warming my feet.
I think she’s photogenic https://photos.app.goo.gl/Yd8sKuUxL9aX79Vi7
What a sweetie!
Looks baked.
What a pretty ghost faced girl!
Pretty
I remember that picture.
Aww, so cute
Here’s my Schwarzer Hund; my co-pilot, Steele. I miss him every time I get in my truck.
Oh, those eyes! Good doggie!
That’s an awesome copilot. I’d miss him too.
Geez, how are we supposed to get straight to commenting when you include so many quality links??
It takes 10 minutes to get through birthdays alone!!!
Try my method –
1) hover over the links to get the names of B’day people and titles of articles, 2) click only those which fully intrigue me, 3) come down and check out the banter, 4) go back to click the links which spawn sufficiently interesting banter.
Fezzik is described as adorably quirky. In my experience, that’s the equivalent of a realtor calling a refrigerator box ‘cozy’. My cat would probably be called adorably quirky. Oscar is a fuzzy demon I pretend is a cat. I say my dog has quirks due to being a retired racer. Issues would be more accurate.
Otis and Boxcart, though, seem absolutely adorable.
“Charming” means the place is falling apart.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the original clip of that. Thank you!
I especially liked the Nazi salute at the end.
How did a bunch of Italian neonazis get a French built missile?
Speaking about what to do on Christmas… The first Christmas which I spent alone was a few months after separation from my first wife and all my siblings had fled the nest so there was little reason to travel across country to the family home. I stayed at home all day watching action videos, sipping a few beers but staying sober enough to build a 1911 on a Para-Ord frame – hand fitting all the parts.
Probably one of my favorite Christmas memories.
Are you a gunsmith or was that a one time project?
You could call it a one-time project but it wasn’t my first and wasn’t by far my last. I still build guns when I am back in the US.
A major factor in me choosing to major in mechanical engineering is the deep interest I have always had in the subject. Whenever feasible I’ve always had my hands in some mechanical project – guns, cars, etc. Well, at least until I came back to Japan. Since then it hasn’t been as frequent and has mainly been related to home renovation/repair.
Pretty cool. Something I would like to get into. Especially 1911s.
I love building 1911’s – but mostly on Para-Ord Hi-cap frames. I picked up an early Para-Ord pistol just for the frame to convert it to 10mm Auto.
So now I have an extra 45 ACP slide, barrel, and a handful of parts that I could put on a standard 1911 frame… I am so tempted to order another frame to finish this up as a single-stack 1911 with a few bells and whistles I prefer.
Nobody needs more than one bell and one whistle.
I love my P12; it was my EDC for many years.
Several volunteer firefighters, who deny wrongdoing, were arrested and later released. Local police say they are being investigated for allegedly igniting fires to obtain funding through nonprofits.
——-
Bolsonaro has claimed in the past, without evidence, that the fires were started by nongovernmental organizations in retaliation for his administration’s funding cuts.
Inconceivable.
without evidence
Kind of like the claims that the fires are the worst ever or are due to “climate change”.
It’s been 170 years, give it a fucking rest. Entire ethnicities have gone from practically nonexistent in the United States, to hated, to accepted, to commonplace and indistinguishable from the rest, in less time than has passed since the abolition of slavery.
Don’t mention the Vietnamese. Or the Cubans.
I was going to say that two generations ago we were sending our sons over to kill the Vietnamese. Now, just about every American has a favorite Vietnamese restaurant and knows what they’re going to order when they get there before even looking at the menu.
I’ve never even seen a vietnamese restaurant. I’m not sure a lot of them settled up here.
That’s probably because it’s usually called a “pho” restaurant, at least where I live (technically, phở but you have to actually know Vietnamese to know what any of those accent marks do). It’s a type of soup (with different variations, although we usually get the Saigon rather than Hanoi kind here for somewhat obvious reasons).
That having been said, all of the restaurants I know of serve other food than pho. Banh mi (a sub-like sandwich) is common.
Never seen those either.
The asian population around here appears to be south or east but not southeast. (Ie, mostly Indian, Chinese, or Korean, some Japanese)
Huh. There were a lot of Vietnamese and Cambodians when I was a kid in Rochester.
That’s a few hundred miles away.
Makes me wonder if there was some “program” that drew them to my city or if it was just organic. We had an abnormally large number of Turks, too. ??♂️
Did Rochester need a lot of nail salons?
That’s Koreans. I don’t remember many of them, or Chinese for that matter.
Hey Rhy, which Rochester are you from?
New York
Cool, or should I say cold? I went to RIT for a couple years. That’s high on my list of personal fuck ups.
The Vietnamese are well represented on Oahu. Lots of good food is prepared by them. Plus they have a near lock on the barber shops. (I can’t vouch for the nail salons.)
I have no idea what most of the asian ethnicities around here are, they all open ‘Chinese’ restaurants (which feature everything from General Tsao to Vietnamese short ribs to sushi and Mongolian grill under one roof) We do have a sizable Hmong population, but they don’t seem to be the ones with restaurants.
Half the people living in my/her house are Vietnamese. Actually the nicer half and the way better cooking 1/2.
Well… We weren’t really trying to kill all of them, although they do all kind of look the same….
Part of the communists’ success came from exploiting the fact that Americans (Westerners more generally, as the French were there first) did not have many translators and did not understand regional and tribal differences. It didn’t help that the leaders favored by the West were total assholes, again due to the aforementioned lack of cultural knowledge.
Westmoreland, LBJ, and McNamara were stupid assholes who fucked up that war by the numbers. Abrams was smart and won the war, then we decided to forfiet.
…something about letting god sort them out. (Paraphrased from somebody during a crusade centuries before)
And vacationing in Vietnam.
Shortly after the Iraq War, I thought maybe someday I’d be able to go revisit where my brothers fought and died, just as Vietnam vets were starting to do (30-40 years later then). Now, even closer to that same mark and we’re still there fighting, er providing support to Iraqi forces.
After 5 years or so I got a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau. Still don’t like it much
There is so much tacky and stupid shit associated with Christmas
On the other hand, you get Hallmark Christmas movies, so you’re welcome for that.
Nature. Deadly, remorseless nature.
Two tourists were dead and another was injured Friday after falling into a natural, deep bowl formation under Utah’s iconic Delicate Arch at Arches National Park, authorities said.
The accident in wet, slick conditions on grounds covered by stone formations and “biological soil crust” was reported at 7:30 a.m., Arches National Park Chief Ranger Scott Brown said.
Rescuers arrived to find a 65-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman dead at the scene, he said. An injured 30-year-old man was flown to Moab Regional Hospital, the chief ranger said.
Ban gravity.

This is the time of year when I thank Yahweh several times a day that I’m not a goy. – actually I think now you can just pick a gender. You do not need to be constrained by some weirdo. What kind of name is Yahweh anyway?
You’ve never heard of having it Yahweh?
It is what it is.
I see and appreciate what you did there.
Thank you, mi’lady.
Masterful.

My kids walked around thinking they were Allan. It got tiresome when they were in their 50s.
LOL bullshit.
Incompetent, but…
An aide to Sen. Kamala Harris blasted the treatment of staff on the California Democrat’s presidential campaign in a resignation letter this month.
“This is my third presidential campaign and I have never seen an organization treat its staff so poorly,” wrote state operations director Kelly Mehlenbacher in the Nov. 11 letter, which was obtained by The New York Times.
“While I still believe that Senator Harris is the strongest candidate to win in the General Election in 2020, I no longer have confidence in our campaign or its leadership,” she added.
She wrote that the way staff was treated during the past two weeks was “the final straw in this very difficult decision.”
“It is not acceptable to me that we encouraged people to move from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore only to lay them off with no notice, with no plan for the campaign, and without thoughtful consideration of the personal consequences to them or the consequences that their absence would have on the remaining staff,” Mehlenbacher’s letter said. “It is unacceptable that we would lay off anyone that we hired only weeks earlier. It is unacceptable that with less than 90 days until Iowa we still do not have a real plan to win.
“Our campaign For the People is made up of diverse talent which is being squandered by indecision and a ‘lack of leaders who will lead,'” it continued.
She can’t assemble a competent managerial staff, but she’s our best hope to save democracy.
That line was a fairly transparent fig leaf, wasn’t it?
She’s basically telling everyone that Kamala can’t administrate a small team. I dunno, but that doesn’t bode well for someone who’s supposed to be Chief Executive
Isn’t her sister or some similar close relative running it? That sounded like a recipe for disaster to me.
It’s all about who your enablers are, ain’t it? She just needs some Obama-grade sycophants and fawning acolytes. Then she can be a great leader too.
Campaign chair, not manager.
we encouraged people to move from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore
Why is your campaign headquarters in DC to begin with? Oh right, the permanent political staff.
I have a hard time believing any of the moron shitweasels the Dems have think they can win. They are going through the motions for name recognition and donations.

Former Republican congressman Charlie Dent said Thursday some of his former colleagues in the House of Representatives have privately told him they are “absolutely disgusted and exhausted by the President’s behavior.”
Dent told CNN’s Ana Cabrera on “Newsroom” that House Republicans are standing with the President at the moment because of base pressure, but said “they resent being put in this position all the time.”
Dent, who is a CNN political commentator, cited the Trump administration trying to “pivot from the Ukraine scandal” by announcing the 2020 G7 summit at the Trump National Doral resort. The decision was later reversed.
“Moving from one corrupt act to another,” Dent said. “I mean those types of head-exploding moments are just I think infuriating these members and I think they’d like to step out but they just can’t because of their base at the moment.”
No, seriously, that’s what everybody says. They’re just too scared of their constituents. It’s horrible for them. They just want everything back to business as usual.
Meanwhile, at the White House

“Box of Rain” is a good song.
Terminology question: As an atheist, am I still a goy? Just curious.
do you eat shellfish?
I do.
I’m pretty sure that the definition is that if your mother wasn’t of Jewish blood you are Goy. It isn’t a religion thing but an ethic thing.
I’m Goy because even though my step-mother is Jewish and I made the cut, I didn’t join the team.
OK. I was wondering.
If you went that far, you could have at least played in the minors. A Samaritan, perhaps?
The closest I expect to get was when she told me I was “a good son”. Coming from an elderly Jewish woman that had real gravitas.
…even though my step-mother is Jewish and I made the cut…
I see what you did there.
Yes. Non-Jew. If you’re a Jew who is an atheist, you’re not a goy, but an apikoros.
Thanks. If I’m going to ever use a word, I always want to make sure I’m suing it properly.
*Using. Dammit.
Everyone, technically, is a “goy” as the word means “nation”. Goy Yisrael to refer to the Nation of Israel would be grammatical, though the more common term is ‘Am Yisrael. In the vernacular, “goy” is root of the calque “gentile” from the Latin “gens”, also meaning “nation,” but with the connotation of non-Israelites. It is more about ethnicity than religious affiliation.

AOC’s move to call Buttigiege’s remarks “Republican Talking Points” is brilliant. Now you have Republicans yelling at her about why we shouldn’t be paying for college for rich kiddies, all but giving up the game that the government shouldn’t be paying for anyone’s college. It is not a fucking Public Good. She has a econ degree so she should know that.
When college becomes a Public Good it will become a Public Bad, as in Public Schools. The only reason for a free college is because the the mandatory government schools lack in quality. Add 4 more years of wasted time. Unions love the idea, keeps their competition tied up plus more school teachers. The job market can’t absorb all the Soc majors now.

Ocean and bay areas from Pelican Point at Crystal Cove in Newport Beach to the Poche Beach interface in Dana Point and San Clemente could remain off-limits for water sports through the weekend as the Orange County Health Care Agency continues to monitor the effects of a raw sewage spill.
The spill of about 4 million gallons was due to a broken main in Laguna Beach and was first reported at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday by the South Orange County Wastewater Authority and the city of Laguna Beach.
These are the people who want to control what everybody in the country do. Instead of moralizing about what a bunch of dumb planet-wrecking rednecks we are, maybe you should focus on keeping your shit out of the ocean.

The only reason why the main failed is because Republicans refuse to allow the government to tax the rich enough to maintain the infrastructure.
Fatties, fatties, everywhere!
Obesity, a chronic disease, is held to a different standard, despite meeting most of the criteria popularly associated with other epidemics. Obesity affects 70 million adults and 14 million 2-19 year-olds in the United States, and nearly two billion people world-wide.
Almost 300,000 deaths annually in the U.S. are caused by obesity, well in excess of the number of deaths attributed to Ebola, recent epidemics of influenza or opioid overdoses. Obesity therefore meets the criteria of prevalence and lethality.
But the progression of the epidemic and the development of the consequences of obesity have been insidious, and have therefore generated less urgency. Until 1976-1980, the prevalence of obesity in the population was stable at approximately 15 percent in adults. But by 2015-2016, it had increased to almost 40 percent among men and women. Furthermore, the lethal effects of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other diseases associated with obesity take time to appear.
——-
The prevalence of obesity, and its continued spread and lethal effects, clearly exceed those of recent epidemics like Ebola, influenza and opioids, and must be addressed with the same commitment of resources with which we address other epidemics.
For example, Congress allocated over $7 billion in 2018 to combat the opioid epidemic, and yet treatment for comprehensive treatment for obesity is not reimbursed by Medicare. Congress can start by passing the bipartisan 2019 Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, which will expand evidenced-based obesity coverage for Medicare beneficiaries. Passage of the bill would signal that Congress has begun to take obesity seriously.
But as with other epidemics, we must also invest in prevention. Policy initiatives should include increased support for community infrastructure that supports physical activities like walking and biking in the transportation bill, implementing pricing strategies that decrease consumption of ultra-processed foods, passing excise taxes on sugary drinks and sustaining the healthy standards set for school meals under the Obama administration.
If we round them up and put them in work camps, we can achieve multiple socially responsible goals.
I hear Ukraine had a very effective weight loss program in the early 30s.

Good morning from Big Sky, Old Man!
And of course the rest of You People®!
I’m enjoying the last couple hours in our cabin before we head to the airport and fly back to real life. Looking out the window, we got about 4 inches of snow last night and more is falling. Beautiful.
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and put on some extra insulation for winter.
Make it a great day and go Gophers!
Have a good flight. Going to be getting my drink on in another couple of hours.
Sounds awesome. Safe travels.
I’m heading down to a bar to watch tOSU lay one on MIchigan. And drink a gallon of Jim Beam.

It is amusing that they think there’s a difference between “the city” and “the transit authority” when it comes to who’s going to cough up that dough.
Shee had to go all the way to the Supreame Court of Canada for them to point out that she had been arrested for a non-existent offence?
Why? Because lower courts said she had been the author of her own problems buy not obeying the (unlawful) orders of the officier.
Coming soon- night of the long knives, Trump style
The current U.S. Commander in Chief has been systematically dishonoring the American uniform and flag. He sent soldiers to the southern border to fight unarmed, frightened refugees and little kids, barring access to safety to truly desperate human beings.
He betrayed the Syrian Kurds, their comrades in arms who had fought shoulder to shoulder with the Americans. He let them be ethnically cleansed while insulting them with shameless lies that they have a great relationship with Turkey’s Erdogan.
In negotiations with South Korea and soon with Japan, both strong allies, Trump is demanding that they pay protection money for their defense, turning American soldiers from heroes into mercenaries or thugs.
——-
Trump clearly wants to set enlisted men against their commanders. He wants them loyal not to the Constitution but to himself personally.
This is a road well-traveled by other dictators. Before they can assert their power in an absolute fashion, they need to suppress potential sources of resistance. The military is clearly the most dangerous one of those.
Stalin purged his generals in the 1930s, and Erdogan did so with his over the past decade (another reason why Trump loves the Turkish President).
——-
The Vindman experience suggests that the U.S. military still poses a danger to Trump’s course of subverting the U.S. Constitution and hijacking the U.S. government for his personal benefit.
Generals had better watch their backs.
Once he purges the generals, he can surrender to Russia.
I sometimes wonder if I’m living in a cartoon version of reality.
I thought Obama fired hundreds of generals during his presidency. Guess Obama only did that for the good of the country while Trump is doing it for personal reasons.
Trump is demanding that they pay protection money for their defense, turning American soldiers from heroes into mercenaries or thugs.
Sigh.
The Vindman experience suggests that the U.S. military still poses a danger to Trump’s course of subverting the U.S. Constitution and hijacking the U.S. government for his personal benefit.

Seriously this guy is chapioning the guy who tried to correct the civilan leadership of the country into calling him by his rank. Fuck that guy and fuck this guy for pushing for a military overthrow just because the person he wanted lost an election.
Subverting the Constitution? Show of hands at the next Dem debate – let’s go amendment by amendment.

NPR article on school shooting that isn’t yelling “grab the guns!” Of course, they couldn’t resist some special needs pandering.
Many schools are turning to highly visible “hardened” security measures. For example, at least eight states now have laws mandating active shooter drills in schools. But there’s little research yet that shows that those drills are effective. Meanwhile, a new comprehensive report from the U.S. Secret Service underlines the agency’s previous findings that there is one safety approach that does work: threat assessment, as part of a comprehensive program of social and emotional support for students.

I saw a couple of articles after that shooting in California asserting the success and usefulness of the “mental preparation” provided by active shooter drills. If nobody had told those teachers to hide in their classrooms, the death toll would have been much higher.
“I’m determined to make a mental note of any discrimination against my gender, to open my eyes and stop editing out instances – on the television, internet, radio and day-to-day life – of women being treated differently to men. I’ve also stopped putting a man’s psychological comfort ahead of my own – at work, in the street, in a queue, at home, in the pub, everywhere.”

After seeing Rory’s reaction, Dianne says she doesn’t think any kids should have to participate in drills like these.
“Fair enough,” says Melissa Brymer of the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress. “But an emergency can happen at any point in a school day.”
What a surprise. The person who feeds on the fear of children wants to continue scaring them.

There’s a shortage of anyone with semblance of mechanical skills.
So he went to Portland State (commuter school in Oregon) and chose Harvard over OHSU for med school. Then chose to do what afterwards? If he had come back to Oregon and worked in a qualified rural area for three years, he’d get $105,000 ($35,000/year) in loan repayments in addition to his regular salary. Or join the armed forces and get similar programs. Or double dip. Cancer will still be there when he gets through with paying his debts.

@’splosives
I was not being snarky last night when I asked about legal spouse. I read it as being someone you had already left but was still married to.
It is easy for us to say “Leave the fucker” (better, “Kick him out”), but I have volunteered in a battered women’s shelter and I have watched how not easy it is to do that.
You are the breadwinner, no? If so, that gives you all the power.
Dovetailing from this also @splosives: it sounds like he has a serious drinking problem. If he gets drunk and abuses you, then acts nice as if it never happened the next day, that’s pretty classic alcoholic behavior. I have a cousin like that and in spite of how smart or nice he may be when he’s sober, he’s become a family pariah because of how he treats his children after he starts drinking (he’s already going through divorce with wife #3).
It *is* easy for us to armchair quarterback, but I really think you need to pack up and move out, at least for now. If he’s a potentially violent drunk, you could be in legitimate danger.
I think it’s HER house. IIRC, he’s along for the ride.
Well, she can call the cops and have him taken away, but regardless they need to not be in the same place. Having the cops take him away could either be a wakeup call, or it might piss him off and have him coming back for revenge. Physical safety is #1.
My daughter took 30 years to get out of an emotionally abusive marriage, her self-esteem was so low she worried about everything, spent a month at the women’s shelter, finally got the courage to make a decision. She’s off to TX, laughing again. She waited 29 years too long. We’re supposed to be happy in this life.
She clearly just needs a good deep-dicking.
We’ll never know if we don’t try. If it frees just one woman from a life of misery and hopelessness, it’s our duty to offer her solace.
STEVE SMITH OFFER TO HELP!
Today I might drag out my Christmas tree. Normally I would have done it yesterday but I’m not feeling it.
Un/fortunately, XY took it upon himself to put lights up on the gutters and ridgeline of my jouse (first time it has ever had lights) because I asked him if he’d be upset if I didn’t decorate for Christmas.
Like my post-menopausal libido (no, the DHEA is not helping) (or maybe it’s just my life), my Christmas spirit is on the edges of my will. I can see it, I can feel little bits of it poking at me, but not enough to get me wound up.
If you need some help upping the libido I can send you some of my homemade belly dance videos.
I bet the skin tag makes it extra hawt.
It’s gyrations are mesmerizing.
MAKE AMERICA GYRATE AGAIN
Watching said videos will destroy your pre-frontal cortex causing extreme disinhibition; kind of like dementia.
It’s like watching the trailer to The Human Centipede. Do NOT watch that trailer!
Hey, I took belly dancing classes!
10/10 would recommend.
Yeah, I pretty much just go through the motions myself. I’ll catch a glint of it here or there, and we’ll watch a couple movies, but mostly just waiting for it all to be over.
Flibanserin or cabergoline.
Thanks for the suggestions. It may just be my life right now, so we’ll see what happens once we’re settled in a new place and the bk has been discharged.
I’m traveling this Christmas, so this is the extent of my decorating :https://photos.app.goo.gl/pVaCUBoeeQcxnTzY7
That’s neat.
Oh that’s adorable!!! There are a bunch of flower and vine dresses like that on Pinterest and I’ve seen a Christmas one or two.
I’m jealous of your closet space.
The ones on the right are for the furnace and water heater. So, not that much space.
Way to ruin it for me!
As I thought. I asked XY if he was decorating because he REALLY wants me to put up the tree and he said yes, so…… I guess I know what I’m doing today.
In the aftermath of the Columbine attack in 1999, in which two Colorado students killed 13 people at their high school and injured more than 20 others before taking their own lives, the Secret Service published its first review of similar incidents. Back then, 71% of attackers had been bullied. Since then, Alathari says, “it’s interesting”: Despite two decades of anti-bullying legislation, anti-bullying assemblies and anti-bullying curricula in schools, today the incidence is even higher.
Huh.
Actually, I cannot help but wonder if that claimed increase in bullying is based on real behavior, or a vastly expanded definition of “bullying”.
Bullying is human nature. Kids are going to find ways to do it and they do is more passive-aggressively now, gaslighting and such–which is absolutely crazy-making because if you react, you look like a crazy asshole, meanwhile, you’re getting paranoid and questioning your sanity.
I think one of the worst things they do to kids being bullied is tell them, “Just ignore them and they’ll stop.”
That never works, ever. Not one time in history ever. It just marks you as a “bitch” who will take any abuse you’re given and makes the bullying even worse.
Isn’t the current idea about anti-bullying a version of “lay back and think of England”.
As long as we can keep ignoring this, sure let’s go with “bullying”.
The state encourages children to use it to bully-by-proxy people they don’t like.
I’d love to see this guy’s MCAT scores.
What really matters here is that Harvard was able to rack up diversity admissions points.
Afternoon all… time for an off topic query for the other PC builders here. Looking to upgrade my machine, and pass down the motherboard, RAM, Vid Card, and CPU to my nephews for Christmas (they’re not yet teens, I have parental approval, and it still runs all the games I’ve thrown at at). Currently looking at this build for the replacement:
Ryzen 7 3700X processsor
Asus Rot STRIX B450-F motherboard
32 GB of DD4-3200 (may up this to 64 GB)
EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super
Any thoughts?
neeeerd
no one needs more than 8 GB of RAM
fun fact: one of the scripts I wrote crashed with out of memory on machines under 100 GB of RAM. I send it to a 200GB machine on the server farm and it worked. So all you need is enough memory.
The current machine has 16 GM of RAM; however, the video card I’m looking at does only have 8 GB of RAM.
this is Dude, aka Mr Mojeaux. Sounds like a solid combo, provided you are using an Asus ROG board and not a Rot board. ? Amazon has the Ryzen for $299
Stupid typo… yes the ROG board. I remember needing to pull up spec sheets for the various components in order to make sure they’d work together. Figuring out the jumper settings… double checking all of that, hooking it all up, and hoping. Now you just go to PCPartPicker through in a couple of items and all the compatibility checks are done for you. Then the motherboards auto-detect everything. It’s also looking like I won’t need to buy a new Win10 license, as there are quite a few reports that you can register a Win10 installation with a Win7 license key now. With EOS coming up, and the machine going to be used predominantly by kids, I figure having an auto-updating security patched OS is going to be important.
If you’re going AMD for the processor, you could go AMD for GFX too, their modern build allows crossfire between the core and card to boost performance; but then again AMD cards always seem to have bad support by the gaming industry.
I’ve heard that the newer AMD vid cards are better, but I got burned by some of the older ATI cards (before AMD purchased them). I have once tried an SLI setup, but it was a minimal boost for a very large cost increase.
i’d get more memory
Get two hds, at least one solid state.
HDS I’ve already got. 500 GB SSD and two 2 TB drives. Those will be staying, for the kids, I’ve got some spare 1 TB drives sitting around.
Bullying is human nature.
Bullying is part of that “socialization” process so precious to the folks who hate homeschoolers.
my Christmas spirit is on the edges of my will. I can see it, I can feel little bits of it poking at me, but not enough to get me wound up.
I have never been much of a celebrationist; birthdays, Christmas, whatever. Too much work.
The best holiday for me adultish-wise was/is Thanksgiving, because (since I wasn’t cooking) it’s low pressure. Just hang out, talk, eat, drink.
