The skies are being a bit mysterious today. No alignments or conjunctions, no occluded oppositions. Just a bunch of planets minding their own business. Or so they’d like you to think…
Usually when the sun is in your sign, you’ve got other good things going on, if for no other reason than two of the luckiest planets (Mercury and Venus) are never too far away from the Sun. Unfortunately, this week Sagittarius isn’t seeing that, so its prime influences foresight, perception, precision will be dominant without extra goodies starwise. Sagittarius’ loss is Capricorn’s gain as Venus is there this week. Also joining her is her uncle Jupiter and her grandfather Saturn. We have three generations in one of the oldest and most primordial signs, making this an excellent time to pass down skills and family lore, so get to either learning or teaching. This is also a time of family disputes, given the somewhat… troubled history between Jupiter and Saturn, as well as the fact that Venus, being produced without procreation herself, is most explicitly NOT an avatar of familial love. However, Venus is a harmonizer, which will let hhe polarities represented by Jupiter and Saturn exist in a sense of completion rather than opposition. There is a lot of power in this celestial arrangement, so make use of it while you can. Especially since there is going to be some chaos this week as the moon is in Aries. Mars and Mercury in Scorpio means… something about attacks? An attack you can see coming.
A rather grim draw this week. Lots of swords, lots of reverses including the only major.
Sagittarius: 10 of Cups reversed – A false sense of security, indignation, violence
Capricorn: 2 of Coins – gaiety, recreation, news and messages in writing, obstacles, agitation, trouble, embroilment.
Aquarius: King of Swords reversed – Cruelty, perversity, barbarity, perfidy, evil intention
Pisces: 10 of Swords – pain, affliction, tears, sadness, desolation
Aries: Page of Wands – This card has a typical reading which I’m ignoring because of this footnote “A dangerous rival, if followed by the Page of Cups.” Guess what was drawn next?
Taurus: Page of Cups reversed – Taste, inclination, attachment, seduction, deception, artifice
Gemini: King of Coins – Valour, realizing intelligence, business and normal intellectual aptitude, mathematical gifts and attainments of this kind; success in these paths
Cancer: 2 of Swords reversed – Imposture, falsehood, duplicity, disloyalty, misdirected revenge
Leo: The Lovers reversed – Failure, foolish designs, marriage frustrated and contrarieties of all kinds
Virgo: 5 of Coins reversed – Disorder, chaos, ruin, discord, profligacy
Libra: 4 of Swords – Vigilance, retreat, solitude, hermit’s repose, exile, tomb, coffin
Scorpio: 8 of Swords – Bad news, violent chagrin, crisis, censure, power in trammels, conflict, calumny, sickness
Cancer: 2 of Swords reversed – Imposture, falsehood, duplicity, disloyalty, misdirected revenge – it’s that stupid piece of code that giving me trouble? It is in fact out to get me.
Virgo: 5 of Coins reversed – Disorder, chaos, ruin, discord, profligacy,
Thanks……
Just a bunch of planets minding their own business.
Celestial libertarian moment?
Or so they’d like you to think…
Damn!
Taurus: Page of Cups reversed – Taste, inclination, attachment, seduction, deception, artifice
A tasty, clever, clingy, deceptive woman is inclined to seduce me? Huh, I’ve had worse weeks.
And it’s your fault that Aries are going to find themselves against a dangerous rival. I hope you’re proud of yourself.
9 of thugs: first game under interim manager Duncan Ferguson and they played in his style. Most tackles in Premier League this year, most by an Everton team in 10 years. 3-1 win over Chelsea. He may not be the long term answer, he says he isnt, but ride him for a while, at least thru the FA Cup match with Liverpool.
And when you do hire, make sure Ferguson is his #1 assistant.
Freddie Ljungberg should be available in a week or two.
First pistol match is tomorrow night. In a clever bit of making new people feel like they’re accomplishing something first-time shooters are given a 300 handicap for their first three matches. As bad as I am at IDPA, I am vastly worse at Bullseye.
Good luck.
Failure, foolish designs, marriage frustrated and contrarieties of all kinds
Close to normal.
Aries: Page of Wands – “A dangerous rival, if followed by the Page of Cups.”
After that I put on my travel haruspex robes (complimentary bathrobe) and examined the liver of a sheep. It was auspicious.
(I would appreciate it is a fellow Glib reminds me to increase my tip to the maid because of the mess in the tub.)
The free mutton wasn’t enough of a tip?
Your jib, I like the cut of it.
High five to fellow Aries Dbleagle!!
I’ll mail in my tea leaves report later.
When I finally make tea.
Mimosas for now.
You can also augur with the underside of the cork and the bubble patterns you know.
No need for chicken entrails?
Beer at lunch. A little more beer now. Then I gotta stop. I gotta get up early for physical therapy work at the gym.
Another Aries here. I don’t know how to interpret this week’s fortune. What do I do?!
Scratch offs. It is always buy scratch offs.
Bunch of Ariens here huh?
Taurus: Page of Cups reversed – Taste, inclination, attachment, seduction, deception, artifice

A Vortex Spar AR set up for absolute co-witness.
I’m still waiting for a cheap 9mm upper to become available so I can try out this lower with a Tier 5 mounted on it to see how usable it will be left-handed.
Nice! I have an EoTech on mine.
Where’s the beef?
I’m trading in my Beretta 92FS in on a CZ 75 shop custom. The CZ is the best pistol I found to fit my hands and this particular one is beautiful.
https://czcustom.com/cz-75-czc-custom-2.html
I’m a big fan of both Beretta and CZ. What color is that?
Mat stainless.
The Beretta was a recent used purchase, but it has had extraction issues and needs work on rear sights.
Yeah, I passed up a used 92FS Inox last week. So pretty, but I know where my gun money is going for the immediate future.
Sweet!
Damn. Pretty sweet.
” The CZ is the best pistol I found to fit my hands and this particular one is beautiful.”
The price of the one in the link you provided is $3,095.00. Admittedly, I am not very knowledgeable with regards to these matters, yet that seems to be a very high price to pay for a handgun. What am I unaware of that “justifies” the cost?
$3k is very high, but not too atypical for tuned or semi-custom pistols. What CZ Custom, Wilson Combat, Langdon Tactical etc. do is that they take a stock pistol and do a lot of manual work improving them. There aren’t many such companies, and their labor is in high demand, and it takes a skilled pair of hands to do it.
CZ’s are one of the top brands used in competition shooting. A “custom” handgun has parts that are hand fitted and finished. They’re basically a labor of love with great attention to detail, flush finishes, and clean lines. In addition to being works of art, they are much more accurate than a gun “off the line”. People who shoot competitively or simply want a work of art will gladly pay $3K for the privilege. You don’t need to spend that for an everyday carry defense gun for sure.
I’m planning on buying a $600 pistol and having another $600 of work done on it. Admittedly, most of that is going to be vanity finish work, but still…
Interestingly enough, having the shotgun milled is significantly less expensive than having handgun work done. I can only assume that’s to a combo of manual work v. CNC and a completely lopsided difference in demand for the services.
Who are you sending it to?
I don’t see any steaks.
Kielbasa for lunch and some normal sized flat irons for dinner. Nothing photo worthy.
Kielbasa is the best sausage.
This is known.
Also, with sauerkraut.
Huh? It can be served without sauerkraut? I did not know.
Yes, with pierogies.
Usually with Haluski.
*suppresses urge to make obvious dick joke*
Shhhhhhhh don’t tell my husband. His is Italian.
Not as good as Polish, amirite?
Nice AR Lower. That mag is curved, what caliber is it ?

Getting ready to watch football with my nephew.
Holy shit, the Packers actually had a punt return.
But you can count on them not scoring on a punt or kick return. Their last was in 2014. Every team in the league, even the Browns, Bengals and Cards have more recent returns for a TD.
For reasons unknown, I read this in Obi Wan Kenobi’s voice and cadence.
Yeah, but I think they had like -8 yards on punt returns for the entire season until the first two today.
Or, as Wayne Larrivee said after the third punt return, “So this is what a punt return looks like!”

I’m not smart enough to be a mad scientist. Now if you see a story of an Ohio man dead in a house fire due to falling asleep drunk with the oven on trying to make fish sticks at 4am, then you should rightfully worry about me.

How exactly does that work? They keep a list of wrongthinkers? What about other criminals who do their time?

Bull Moose party primaries?
Chiefs v Patriots today.
I don’t know what to believe. The Chiefs are perfectly capable of beating the Patriots—but not when it really counts. I don’t know if today counts.
Thing is, the Chiefs choke. A lot. I’ve got PTSD and am numb. My poor husband is a new zealot. He hasn’t been here long enough to be traumatized.
Chiefs v Patriots – this sounds like evil colonizers oppressing the natives
The Chiefs don’t get the flak the Redskins do. First, it’s a title of honor and leadership. Second, Kansas City’s sports teams are nobility. Chiefs and Royals, natch, but when we had basketball, they were the Kings. Yeah, they’re in Sacramento now, but they were ours once.
As always, this is relevant.

Fuckity Fuck for fucks-sake. A Bloomberg commercial? On a NFL featuring the evil Redskins? Cold weather and now a Dem commercial on FOX NFL coverage. Screw this time zone.
LOL!
Cheers.
From a political perspective, one of the few advantages of living in a “UV Blue” state with only 4 electoral votes is that I am rarely subjected to political TV or radio commercials.
I don’t know how people living in a “battleground” or “key primary” state can survive the non-stop onslaught of those ads on every media. They were even turning up on YouTube.
I used to live in CO. Its infuriating.
I first suspected that the Donald would win in 2016 when Minnesota started running Hillary ads in the month prior to the election.
I thought “Holy crap, they think Minnesota is at stake!!”
Yeah, I’m ready for the primaries to be over so I won’t get any more commercials.
You prefer the general election commercials?
No, I don’t get general election commercials.
I don’t know what to think either. The Patriots looked terrible last week, but literally half the team was sick – they even chartered a separate “sick” plane. Hopefully a healthy tight end shows up this week.
Who here remembers the Hungarian algorithm?

Some mixed messages here.
Chili dogs, for a chilly day. Wind speed is less than 50 knots (nauts?), for a change. Snow, in the higher elevations. Higher than me. Woohoo.
Just glanced at the teevee; that was an impressive glove side save by Jackson.
knots = nautical miles/hour
I use knots for wind speed, as well
I used to, but then I messed up my rope. Now, I’m a frayed knot.

I would choose the Bahamas. The Columbia river is cold.
It’s gets a bit warmer in the summer months. Not tropical beaches warm, but not immersion suit temp either.
I’ll stay dry, that’s a lot of work, fun though
I wonder if this is how Bloomberg thinks this is how he’s going to use his media arm to hurt Trump and not himself?
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-12-06/u-s-wage-growth-eclipses-mortgage-rate-for-first-time-since-72
“…wage growth eclipsed mortgage rates for the first time since 1972.” Of course, most of this is likely due to the Fed keeping rates artificially low, nonetheless, it’s funny to see more financial news that helps bolster Trump’s case on “the economy, stupid” while Bloomberg Media was promising to only investigate Trump and leave Dems alone.
Something something enemies who needs friends?
I for one find it hilarious billionaires that typically throw a bunch of money away on political donations decided to hang on to it this time around, as if to say “something something right, something yourself.”

Watched my first 4K movie: The Irishman.
The picture clarity and smoothness were scary. Don’t know if love it or fear it .
I swear my 4k version of Blade Runner 2049 looked better than it did in the movie.
Smoothness- the soap opera effect?
Kinda. It was startling at times
That’s a thing and there’s a setting.
I could not bear to watch Mr Mojeaux’s new TV with that.
I was at a hotel that had TVs with it turned on. Of course, can’t change it. Awful once the novelty wore off.
Utterly unwatchable.
Watch some of the 4K content on Amazon prime. Bosch has some LA at night shots that are striking.
This effect has been strange when going to several concerts over the summer. I found that the screens were more realistic looking than reality.
I was hit with that with the iPad retina whatever it’s called. More real than real life, which hurt my eyes. I had to turn the bright down.
Regular resolution NFL red zone channel looks great there.
NY State Rifle and Pistol v. City of New York, NY Oral Argument
These were some of the more unseemly arguments I’ve heard at USSC.
a/ Some justices wanted to wrangle cert, as if the court had not accepted the case. There was a good deal of childishness and foot-dragging on the most trivial and obvious points: some justices seem to think that they can undermine arguments by running out the clock with irrelevancies.
b/ Same justices wanted to waive away the case based on post-cert dodges by respondent. Of course, respondent wants to have their cake and eat it too: no clear limits to police tactics and free rein to carry on save a very few concessions they’ve made.
c/ Alito wasted a lot of time asking questions about safety as if USSC is going to rule on the facts. Respondent was tied up dealing with simple questions about the law’s impingement on 2A and generally disingenuous about training opportunities and the obvious transportation needs. He further implied that shooting tournaments are frivolous and different things from practice/training . . . which essentially confirms plaintiff’s arguments that NYC are weasels looking for any vector to limit gun use/ownership and happily hector owners at every turn.
General impressions: Alito is probably a prick; Gorsuch is classically sober.
Prediction: The Court will fuck over gun owners.

I am an anti-packrat by nature. I don’t like stuff. Unfortunately, I must have stuff for hobbies, most of which I have not been wanting to do. I jave a crap ton of keepsakes (not really).
Anyway, I’ve been thinkinh massively about what to store, if to store it, cost-benefit analysis in storing v buying new and if I will ever have to re-buy it anyway.
I don’t know where we’ll end up, but right now I am keeping my husband’s pride in check while staying in this school district (for my sons’s mental health), so it is likely we will land in a very small place (I hesitated to say “dump”).
I am hoping that once this business is behind us, my passion for crafts and DIY will reassert itself, but will I have my stuff by that time?
Now if we can get the government to consume less….
I have my stuff in storage, I want my Stuff back, all my hobby materials, electronica, recording devices, all my toys, except the Kites,
Sad Bob….
I understand, Yusef. I am so sorry.
Journalism
After all the histrionics over Amazon ditching plans to build its HQ2 facility in Long Island City, Amazon’s still set on worming its way into the Big Apple because it simply cannot take a hint when it’s not wanted.
This week, the online retail giant signed a lease for 335,000 square feet of office space in the Hudson Yards neighborhood, the Wall Street Journal reported, thus making good on earlier rumors that the company had been actively considering purchasing property on Manhattan’s West Side.
——-
So, just to run that back: After all that fuss, Amazon’s coming to New York. No billion-dollar incentive package. No ridiculous interstate battle royale to win the site. So while 1,500 jobs may seem like pennies compared to the 25,000 jobs estimated to be created by Amazon’s previous HQ2 project, it’s still significantly less of a middle finger to Manhattan.
Somebody got paid to string those words together. Is this a great country, or what?
Sick burns!
Man, the left sure hates Amazon.
Of course they do, it’s an exemplar of capitalism.
Same justices wanted to waive away the case based on post-cert dodges by respondent. Of course, respondent wants to have their cake and eat it too: no clear limits to police tactics and free rein to carry on save a very few concessions they’ve made.
But New York (City and State) gave them everything they wanted!
I hate that they are called “justices” like they are automatically a virtue. It would be like calling me a Benevolence instead of a manager.
And they all think they should keep the title after they retire.
I know how you’ll be addressed going forward.

In the struggle between Main Street and corporate America, the concern was once Wal-Mart. Today, the focus is on Dollar Stores. Consider this: there are now more Dollar Stores in the U.S. than Starbucks and McDonald’s combined – 30,000 of them.
As many brick-and-mortar retailers struggle, Dollar Stores have quietly expanded to nearly every town in America. And bargain hunters love them.
“I’m just delighted – I get happy every time I come here,” said one customer, Kimberly. “I’m like, ‘Oh, somebody’s going to change the price any minute now!'”
There are three major chains: Family Dollar (located mostly in cities); Dollar Tree (the only store where everything is actually $1); and Dollar General, now the largest retailer in the country when it comes to the number of stores – 16,000.
——-
In many communities, the Dollar Store is a real asset, a convenient place to grab detergent or batteries. But in some small towns and urban areas, the Dollar Store is also the closest thing to a grocery store, and this can be a problem.
Aubrey asked Barry Popkin, professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, “If you could talk to the executives of Dollar Stores, what would you say to them?”
He replied, “‘Shame on you. You’re killing America just so you can get richer.'”
“Wow. That’s a pretty strong statement.”
“Yeah. They have a model that is a brilliant model to make quick bucks off the backs of our health,” he said.
For years Popkin has warned Americans about the dangers of too much sugar and soda. Now, he is concerned about Dollar Stores. At a time when poor diets are linked to nearly 900 deaths a day in this country, Popkin says to look at what Dollar Stores sell: rows and rows of sugary drinks, candies, and processed foods high in salt and fat.
“It increases their risk of heart disease, mortality, cancer mortality, diabetes, obesity,” he said. “This is the worst food that they can be eating.”
Nationalized grocery stores are the answer.
better they starve than but what they want
Yep. There would be no sugar or soda in those. Or much of anything else, either.
They’re selling things the people want. How horrible.
Fuck them! I get a lot of hobby materials from the Dollar stores, I walked to one drunk yesterday for Chenille pipe cleaners, they had em
There are youtube channels dedicated to making crafts with stuff from dollar stores
I am the master, no YouTube for me,
God of Cheap!
Again with the “food desert” nonsense that’s been debunked so many times.
The food desert thing isn’t complete hogwash. It’s difficult to get stuff home when your nearest grocery store is a gazillion miles away and you din’t have a car and the bus doesn’t go there.
However, what would help is if people started cooking from scratch again. It is NOT easier to haul a bag of flour home than a sack of pizza rolls and chicken nuggets, but it won’t disappear as fast as junk food.
You also have to haul a bag of flour once for every 4 (or whatever) times you haul freezer food home.
OTOH, it takes more money, time, and skill to make a pie crust than buy one.
I know I’m preaching to the choir here. But there are tradeoffs and food deserts are not imaginary.
I object to the idea that there are very many people without a car AND reasonably easy access to fresh food. Certainly not “25% of Dekalb County” as quoted below.
I am actually thinking of inner cities. Where my alma mater is, there is a street that is a sharp dividing line between the haves and have-nots.
There are no grocery stores (or dollar stores) anywhere within walking or bus distance of this dividing line or 3 miles on either side, except one, which is a gourmet store in the most chichi part of town. The haves can afford to shop there and they can drive miles to shop anywhere else.
This just isn’t the case with the have-nots.
The food desert is not hogwash if you don’t have a car and the bus service is sparse.
I grew up in Rust-Belt inner cities but we generally had decent bus service, and even the have-nots almost always had access to a car. Maybe it was different in your area but the situation you’re describing was practically non-existent by me.
There were not what I would consider food deserts when I was growing up in the inner city, and you and I are the same age.
Now there are. There’s a reason for that and it is not a comfortable reality.
The only way I can make my point is to mount a dash cam and go exploring but it’s not that deep for me.
Mind you, I am not defending the alarmists and activists and white-savior elitist do-gooders here. There are legitimate reasons for food deserts, the biggest one being that stores don’t want to move into high-risk areas.
My objection is to the reporting (the spin), and to the lack of (intellectually honest) analysis (therefore uncomfortable) as to why there are food deserts.
Also. More mom’n’pops would set up shop but for onerous government regulations.
Also also. Many people would resent someone of X race setting up shop in a heavily Y race area.
Sooooo many factors involved. It’s nit being reported honestly and do-gooders have the wrong motives to try to fix it.
But food deserts are not hogwash.
“There are legitimate reasons for food deserts, the biggest one being that stores don’t want to move into high-risk areas.”
There are DAs on it all over the country. They are fixing that by making shoplifting essentially legal. Food deserts will disappear any day now.
Yep. That’ll totally help. ?
Tide detergent is a form of currency, you know.
There are very few people who aren’t within realistic walking distance of a grocery store in the United States. The places that aren’t aren’t getting obese because of so-called “food deserts.” Let me put it bluntly for everyone: No one in the history of homo sapiens has EVER starved themselves fat. Ever. It has never ever fucking happened.
Fasting is an option that many, many, many people – myself included – need to start exploring with more regularity. It is our nature and a much more natural way of living and eating. It’s shocking how much better you feel once you get through the first day’s pangs and the absolute drug like craving to eat – especially carbs.
The food desert thing is complete horseshit. We’re meant to go days without eating. It’s how we evolved. Agriculture doesn’t come first in human evolution.
No, it’s not but we will have to agree to disagree. I don’t see this argument going beyond “Yuh huh!” and “Nuh uh!”
Moj, I think you and I might actually agree, just not in the same exact way. But the food desert idea doesn’t make any sense unless the idea is that somehow people are “starving themselves to obesity?” Now the argument here seems to be that the dollar stores are ONLY offering the things that cause all of these horrible outcomes and cost a ton of money, as well. As you note – and with which I agree – it is govt interventions in the form of regulations that create these so-called ‘food deserts’ (Let me just concede that you may know of what I believe are rare places in the United States on a comparative basis). Additionally, at least she’s right about some of the things (soda and anything with HFCS) that are causing the bad health outcomes. But here’s the problem -as you’ve already concluded: it’s the govt’s hand in all of it making a mess. The government subsidizes HFCS-55, which is Coke’s entire product line – flavored HFCS 55. That is underwritten by the US taxpayer – thanks to the US govt’s involvement. That doesn’t include the ethanol mandate for corn growers, nor does it even get into the govt’s hand in the food pyramid and those horseshit nutrition guidelines for the food programs, which is what is making these kids fat in the first place! I want them out of all of it.
Maybe we can simply agree that anyone arguing for govt involvement needs to STFU.
The government’s hand in the sugar trade is criminal.
I would like to explore this more but I’m on my way to Walmart for ingredients for funeral potatoes just because I had a hankering for some. LOL
Yep. A complete, straight-up horseshit lie. It is both cheaper AND quicker to run into a grocery store and buy some healthy – and tasty! – protein, and perhaps a piece of fruit, or even a little starch, and some healthy, essential, yummy and appetite satiating fat. And for the overwhelming majority of the populace it would also be faster, too. Fast food isn’t and the government’s “health foods” aren’t.
We live in a time of unprecedented access to good food, like nothing the world has ever imagined, and government has been the single biggest factor in bending, distorting, and otherwise fucking up that bounty with mal-incentives begat of their cronyism. Drives me fucking insane because I’ve seen so many aspects of it and because it impacts so many disparate areas of our society, including our economy, healthcare, health sciences, physical education, etc. It’s incredible how fucked up it is and this is just another excuse for the retards to stick their noses in and fuck it up some more.

You are correct. That would solve heart disease, mortality, cancer mortality, diabetes, obesity. Well, maybe not the mortality, but the rest, yes it would solve those. It would also solve the prescription drug epidemic.
https://www.univision.com/univision-news/latin-america/empty-shelves-a-day-at-a-venezuelan-pharmacy
It’s going to get (re)solved one way or the other. It just may not be the way people think. There is a tsunami of diabetes coming – worldwide – and there are no pu blic health solutions possible for the kind of demand we’ll see in those areas. And not at those costs. The zombie apocalypse isn’t going to look like people think, but it’s coming. The international diabetes federation did finger sticks on something like 90K Chinese people, ran the A1C’s and did the stats, and said, “You’ve got 492,000,000 pre-diabetics.” That’s in addition to the 114million already diagnosed Type-2 diabetics.
Their problem is slightly worse than ours expressed as a rate. All the Obamacare in the world isn’t going to matter.
Is it bad if I think the herd needs to be culled?
(I am including myself in that also.)
So,the keto adapted shall inherit the Earth?
Consider Dekalb County, Georgia, near Atlanta, where there are a total of 68 Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, and Dollar General stores.
County Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson said 25% of Dekalb County live in a “food desert” –a low-income area with limited access to supermarkets. She worries there are just too many Dollar Stores in these neighborhoods. “They tend to highly saturate areas,” she said. “When you look at the trends and you look at the pattern of growth of the Dollar Store as well as the areas that have the highest levels of obesity, hypertension, high blood pressure, there is a direct correlation. We see that in the data.”
That’s one reason why Fort Worth, Tulsa, Birmingham, New Orleans and Kansas City (among others) have already passed restrictions on where new Dollar Stores can open.
——-
Back in western Iowa, grocer Chet Davis has one last store open in the town of Kingsley. But it’s unclear for how long. Dollar General is building a new location there, too.
Aubrey asked, him, “Are you worried?”
“Oh, definitely.”
“You are essentially asking people to come into your store and pay a little extra so that you can stay in business. Is that a hard sell for people in your community?”
“Well, that’s definitely a hard sell, because everybody’s trying to save some money,” Davis replied. “It’s up to the people of the community to really think hard and decide what they want. It’s completely up to them.”
Not if Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders can help it.
Food desert? You can always shop Walmart, a lot of food is cheaper there, but tape and batteries? Dollar tree
You’re not living in DeKalb County without a car. If you have a car, there is no such thing as a “food desert”. County Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson is a bullshit artist.
People that run successful businesses have no idea what they are doing. What they need is someone like County Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson
(Lorraine Cochran-Johnson is originally from Greenville, Alabama and an eighteen-year DeKalb County, GA resident. Lorraine attended Troy University where she received a B.S. Degree in Political Science and Criminal Justice; a M.S. in The Administration of Criminal Justice; and, received the M.P.A. in Public Administration with a concentration in Economic Development and Grant Writing from Auburn University before attending John Marshall Law School.)
http://commissionerlorrainecochranjohnson.com/commissioner/
to explain to them how to do it properly.
What a fucking clown/petty tyrant she is.
Bachelors and masters degrees in criminal justice yet has never worked in that field, a lifelong history of grafting, and a carpet bagger, yet DeKalb voters voted her in. They really don’t have anyone to blame but themselves.
*history of grifting. I have no idea about her grafting.
A Masters in grabbing the tax cows money? Fuck Auburn. Then law school on top of all that. Hey DeKalb County, I think I found one of your major problems and it is not food desserts.
Mmm, dessert.
How is it a food desert if Dollar General sells food?
The entire southwest quadrant of my town is a “food desert”. I checked on the “Food Desert Locator Tool” on the USDA’s website.
Within this food desert is:
– A newly remodelled Kroger (which I hear is the biggest one in the state; huge fresh produce section too)
– A family-run market with local meat and produce
– A bulk health foods store
– Tons of small restaurants
– A farmer’s market in the summer months
The food desert criteria is fucking bullshit.
This has been my experience too.
The real criteria that seems to ‘create’ the food desert is enough people without cars. The actual availability of stores barely affects the metric.
In inner city Rochester when I was a kid even the poorest of the poor had at least a beater they could drive to Wegmans or Tops.
Good lord, same looking at the nearby “deserts” near me. Multiple grocery stores, including a Winco.
The funny thing is, even by their rural measure (more than 10 miles from a supermarket), they don’t map large areas of actual deserts (by their own standards) but label swathes of BLM/National Forests as such. Everyone involved at the USDA should be fired on the spot over that atrocity.
A and B coexist, therefore A causes B.
Politician logic.
Now do government handouts and the data.
Speaking of industrialized agropoison, I saw some hot pockets breakfast treats at the grocery store, earlier (bacon/egg/cheese version). I resisted, but the power of Satan’s food conglomerate may be too much for me to resist.
Don’t do it! Go Jimmy Dean for quick breakfast meals, they Rock my motel microwave

Greetings one and all,
This is completely off topic, yet I think that this may be interesting to some of us (it is testimony from a law professor regarding the current impeachment proceedings.
I have not been following the proceedings/investigations/et cetera, for various reasons, yet I think it interesting that a self described “progressive” also covered the testimony in this manner.
Well just got 90% of my Christmas shopping done on Amazon. All but one item being delivered on my work from home day this week. Gotta love that:)

Mental issues, probably.

They’re expensive.
They can be….. We own three right now
The thief stole the wheelchair while the owner was sitting in it. I’m guessing he will make a whole bunch of new “friends” in his new digs.

Huh. So are they trying to tell illegals that they need to return to their town of birth, even if it means uprooting their established lives and families, because the government tells them to do it just like Jospeh did?
Pretty sure Joseph was jailed for not paying his taxes.

Thanks for the tip. I don’t own a microwave, but I bet they heat up just fine in an oven.
They do and you need a nuke machine you heathen..
Shit. I had a huge post typed out (phone) (at church) and it says I need to be logged in. I AM logged in, dammit!
When I speak of food deserts, I PERSONALLY (and this is probably where the disagreement is happening) am talking about areas where, within a reasonable walking distance (e.g. 2-3 miles), how much the food is marked up for convenience (e.g. Walgreens), how much you can carry home 2-3 miles. I am not talking about areas where there are stores and some elitist hack thinks the food is not good for you.
I am speaking strictly of distance amd the basic ability to carry your shit home.
Yes, that’s an issue in some places. And Dollar General and other small stores are often the solution. But they don’t count, apparently because they make money by selling people what they want.
I am not arguing that point. Dollar General has adequate nutritious variety at a good price. Are the spices fresh? No, but they have them and they’re cheap. They have flour, sugar, shortening, butter, milk, canned veggies and meats, and protein in their freezer case. Everything you need to cook and eat healthily (no produce) you can find there.
To the extent that there are Americans who are both too desperately poor to buy a car in an area where they need one and also don’t have fresh food within walking distance – a number that I contend is pretty tiny based on my observations over the years – I think we can all agree that the government just makes it worse.
Yes, it indeed always does.
The food “deserts” in my area are almost entirely due to government imposed zoning and land use planning.
Yes that too. It is a problem even in taxpayer-funded “development” zones. They don’t zone for grocery stores.
WON’T* zone
If there is no store in a place it is because the people in that area don’t buy the stuff that non-existent store sells. Food deserts, if they exist, exist because residents create them. I assure you, if a population wants to buy something someone is going to take advantage of that opportunity and sell it to them.
I am trying to say, delicately, is that food deserts exist because people steal other people’s stuff and break other people’s stuff and ruin it for everynody else.
Stores are not absent because no one wants what they’re selling, they’re absent because they get destroyed.
I’m reminded of that time when an EBT glitch caused people’s cards to have no limit at a Louisiana Walmart
Classy.
A lot of stupid around that, including imbecilic design on the cards that fails open, but this
Unless she was trying to leave the store with unpaid merchandise, wtf?
Wow, you can type-swear in church and no lightning bolt?
Also, dick jokes but I haven’t done that in a while.
Hah!
Speaking of (your) church, did Gadianton disappear after his excellent series?
He told me he had new job duties including a different shift that made participation difficult. He lurks sometimes.
Since you don’t need to walk your food home, how is it you know so much about these so called deserts? This isn’t the 20th century
I have reasons to be in such areas for reasons I do not feel a need to enumerate.

some more recent derp highlights:
-heard a report on NPR that tipping should be banned because it is racist; supposedly white servers get more tips that non-whites
-also on NPR, new CPR mannequins will feature boobs because men are more likely to get CPR than women; supposedly male good Samaritans don’t give CPR to females for fear of sexual assault accusations
Interestingly enough, I would say my ratio of doing CPR on men versus women was about 10-1.
Arise, *Sir* Spud, Knight of the Derp Table.
Bravo on your lifesaving efforts.
You are the 4th recipient of this prestigious award.
He just said he applied CPR, not the number of lives saved. The last couple of CPR instructors seem to hammer home that CPR is often unsuccessful.
Regardless of the success rate, it was a noble effort.
Three in 30 years. It wasn’t until AEDs and citizen CPR became a thing that success rates went up. By the time we show up, it’s usually too late.
Wait. I thought that males were looking for nothing more than to sexually assault wimmin? So wouldn’t that mean we would be more willing to press on the chest of a womyn and later claim it was CPR?
(True tip. If you have to perform CPR and have a way to mark the proper spot for compression, mark it. It will speed up finding the spot again, and if you have to perform CPR for any length of time you will be messing up the chest. It will aid you in finding the correct spot in a chest of a large mushy spot.)
supposedly male good Samaritans don’t give CPR to females for fear of sexual assault accusations
Yeah, no valid reason why a random stranger would feel reluctance at all, let alone removing interfering garments like an underwire bra. And that’s not even getting to applying AED pads.

Would.
Someone told me about a Freakonomics article that concluded that tipping IS racist. It also said that blacks give smaller tips themselves. So my first question would be: Since most waitstaff probably work in their own community (doubt anyone is commuting to bus tables) it’s entirely possible that blacks are receiving smaller tips, but what’s left out is that it’s not white people’s fault.
It reminds me of how people point out that blacks are shot by police at a higher rate (which has been called into question, by the way) but you never hear the fact that most people shot by police are shot by an officer of the same race.
For me, the real point is that even if tipping disproportionately benefits whites, banning it will make *all* those workers *poorer*.
Yay socialism! Dragging everyone down to the same level since 1848.

I really enjoy listening to Romo’s commentary. He really knows the game and how to talk about it.
Yup. The NFL had to ask him to stop analyzing so well real time because teams were listening and changing their approach accordingly.
After his debut commentary season, reporters asked if he’d be doing the same level of predictions next season. He said “I make no predictions about making predictions.”
