Remember the old Charles Atlas ad that ran in comic books? I do. When I was a kid, I was sure that if you were a big enough guy you wouldn’t have to worry about anyone picking on you. That may be largely true, but it overlooked all sorts of other things. I spent the first six years of my legal career practicing criminal defense. I was exposed to nearly every kind of deprivation one person could inflict on another person. Between that and my full-blown libertarianism, there was no doubt I would become a gun owner.
Fast forward umpteen years, I’m married, own a home and have two kids. One night in our low crime suburb, we accidentally left the garage door open overnight. Wifey’s car was burglarized. No one entered our house, but she was badly shaken up. She called the police to report the incident. I was at work when she did this. I came home to be told we had to get a dog for protection.
This didn’t compute for me. I knew she wasn’t talking about getting a trained attack dog especially with two young children in the house. No, it wasn’t that. The cop she spoke to told her to get a dog for protection. I laughed and told her if we were going to do anything it was get a shotgun. No, she replied, the cop said to get a dog.
I met wifey when we were both working as public defenders. I can’t adequately describe the mutual skepticism we shared about cops. Their truthfulness, training, “expertise,” note taking, record keeping, interview skills, and on and on. There wasn’t anything we didn’t criticize. Despite all this, she was insistent we had to get a dog. I was insistent we had to get a gun. So, in the best Glibertarian tradition we did both.
I bought a Mossberg 590. I love that gun. Wifey and I both got trained by a private instructor. I definitely caught the gun bug. Wifey not as much. I started looking at pistols. Life intervened in the form of all sorts of stuff with our kids (good lord those ankle biters take a lot of time) and Moe; my best fried for the last nine years.
Nine years later, one kid is off to college, the other is a teenager, and Moe is a grumpy old man. I finally have a glimmer of getting a little bit of time for myself. I’ve engaged in idle talk about finally buying a pistol. Wifey called my bluff. For our last anniversary she told me to go buy a pistol. I told her California requires a written test and I’m not buying a gun without having some idea how to safely handle it. For my birthday she bought me a basic handgun class which includes California’s ridiculous written test.
Yesterday I attended the class. It was taught by two active duty cops. One of them aspires to having Clancy Wiggum’s physique. The other is futilely trying to stave it off. They better be good with a gun because there is no way these guys could engage in anything physical for more than a minute without being completely winded.
The class was a mix of very useful safety information, completely irrelevant cop stories, and firing a Glock 17 under supervision. We constantly joke about cops believing the most important thing is they go home at the end of their shift. This mentality was confirmed during the class.
Now that I’ve banged on these guys enough, the safe handling and shooting instruction made it all worth it. I finished the class understanding how to safely handle a pistol. The live fire instruction was very helpful. I only fired twenty rounds. The instruction and feedback on how to properly hold the pistol, aim, and pull the trigger greatly improved my shooting in a short time. Now, I have to buy a pistol and go practice.
I’m strongly considering a Sig Sauer P226 or P229. My only concern is these aren’t striker type pistols so I’m wondering if this means I’ll be pulling shots due to the action. I’d love some feedback from handgun owning Glibs.
Just got back from Vegas, Wendy is still pretty out of it, but looks and sounds OK. Thanks for all your blessings Glib people, hers this if you want to…

Get a gun,
Learn to shoot it
Have fun,
Good deal. She be out of the hospital for christmas?
Probably not til the leg is healed over, so no, lonely Christmas for us both, I’m going to be there on Tuesday, I got her a gift she will love,
It’s a Pooh thing
You bought her Xi Jinping?
Pretty much, piglet too!
Prayers sent your & Wendy’s way.
Tell her to get well soon. Keep pushing on and happy x-mas.
I hope Wendy continues to get better.
Good to hear the news, Yusef/AKA Bob
Stay strong, Bob. You are good people.
What Spud said. Hang in there buddy.
Prayers for you and Wendy! Glad to hear she’s holding up!
Go big or go home!
Just kidding. I like Berreta 92 because it is the hand gun I am most familiar with other than my fathers Luger single six which I grew up shooting. If you want gun advice you came to the right place. A plethora of knowledge in the community here on that.
Also, I just opened one of these. So not helpful with my glib fit bod, but damn this stuff is good.
I’m having Brats and potato salad with a Natty Ice, nice!
Well, I’m sure if you only drink one, you’ll be just fine.
So far today, rolled oats with bananas and blueberries, and a salad for lunch. Good. But the 4th Stella is going away quickly and there’s more beer to be drank. Not so good. I’d better fire up RDR2, that slows me down since I can’t drink and shoot at the same time.
No I bought A few more than one,
if you only drink one
BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAHA!11!!! That’s a good one. Actually, I only have one. $5 for a pint bottle so not buying a 12ver of those. I do have some back up though.
Hmmm how do you know my shopping habits so well?
Yeah, that was my best attempt at dry humor today. I have these 2 20 oz stella cans, a 30 oz Carlsberg can, 2 24oz can of those tomato juice beer things, and 3 Oatmeal stouts. I also have a bottle of vintage cachaca. I try not to drink that stuff though…
I just popped the Carlsberg and noticed that can is actually 34 oz, not 30, yeah, more beer for me!
Natty comes in 15 or 30 packs, good cheap beer
Tall cans!
Natty Bo? Or Natural Ice? They have the Natty Bo 30s at my local store. I get the 6 in the tall cans sometimes. It’s decent beer for cheap, better than Bud in my opinion.
Ice Baby!
?
Add tobacco and you have a poor man’s bloody. I like those
I sort of like it.
Bloody beer is disgusting.
I have the exact .44, but in nickle. I love it, but I’m not about to use it for self defense. Might never see it again. I use a .38 for the risky stuff.
I have a Sig p229 in 40 cal.
I regret purchasing the .40, I wish I had purchased 9mm instead. The 40 is too “snappy” for my tastes. Besides that, I am not very proficient with handguns, so I have no advice to offer. My skill is not such that I can attribute my poor aim to the DA > SA trigger pull. I intend to do more practicing and take some courses in the future, probably 3-6 months down the road.
Beautiful gun though. I have an early version, without the rail for mounting accessories. Which is fine by me, I like the “plain jane” version.
Thanks Aus. I’m going with 9mm. I’m considering the Scorpion model because it comes with Cerakote and night sights. I really want night sights since this is a home defense weapon.
Any thoughts on the finish of your model and/or the standard sights?
You’ve fired one pistol. It is not time to choose.
My wife and I rented 18 or 20 different pistols before we narrowed it down to a 1911 (actually it was an early preference, but we kept shooting lots of different pistols before we chose).
Of the striker-fired pistols, I vastly preferred the Smith and Wesson M&P 9 and the Springfield XD-9. I still hate Glock.
I currently have a Sig p938 as a pocket pistol and a Springfield EMP 1911 with a nice shoulder harness. I mostly use the Springfield EMP-4 1911 for practice, but do also get the carry weapons out a couple of times each year.
Thanks Kinnath. You are right I should fire more guns before buying. I’m CA so my overlords have decreed only certain handguns can be sold in this state. It does cut down my choices.
https://www.sigsauer.com/store/p220-combat-full-size.html
CA compliant
I need to shoot one of those. Fuck CA compliant though. Although CO is getting just as bad with stupid mag limits and all. #Dickheads
I’m determined to add a second P220 to my collection. They’re excellent pistols.
I am not looking forward to the bullshit mag cap when I move back to CO. God willing that gets tossed somehow, because WI spoiled me with no bullshit “universal” background checks and no mag caps.
Of course, the mag ban is effectively already gutted by the recent (past year sometime?) decision making it legal to sell “repair kits.”
Thanks for the suggestion Sean. Have you fired the P226 or P229? I’m wondering how they compare.
Currently I have (Sigs) a 220, 2 226s, 1 229(40), 2 228s, a 239(40), and P6. I love them all, but the 228 with the old school folded slide is the winner.
Why? Because it’s reliable, accurate, and very well balanced. Oh and it’s a looker.
https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/Ji7ZCLZwRAKT1lTC1aW5wQ.HFXY1V4E7HdPrrS-BLwR8d
Oh, and a 2022 in .40…I’m a Sig fanboy…
The 2022 is a hell of a gun for the price point.
Thanks. Any thoughts on the usefulness of Cerakote and night sights. Whatever I buy will be for home defense.
No opinion on cerakote. I have one pistol factory cerakoted. *shrug*
Night sights aren’t a bad idea and Sigs Xray sights are great. That being said, my edc has regular sights. *shrug*
I’d probably recommend a weapon mounted light for dedicated home defense before night sights.
Thanks again. I’m planning on a mounted light. I’m considering the possibility it fails or I forgot to attach it. It’s belt and suspenders thinking.
I’m not sure the holidays are a good time to talk about fitness. I’m just trying to not eat and drink myself to death. After it’s over, I’ll go back to the fitness stuff, if I survive this.
^^
Im trying my hardest to minimize my stress level. Everything else can wait until January.
I had to just cold turkey stop working. There’s stuff to do. Sorry, but it ain’t getting done, not by me right now. I just had a team member to ask me to apply a patch tonight. I replied and said sure, if I don’t forget, but don’t expect much out of me this week. I was just burnt out as hell, gotta chill. I’m on vacation until Jan 3 and if it’s not an emergency, I ain’t doing it.
Yep, same here. I had a couple meetings to attend, but otherwise I have unplugged. Next few months are going to be a unique combo of awesome and horrible, so decompression is important.
I’ve gained 5 lb just from eating home cooked meals again, Pig Out!
It’s good for me
Progress.
I’m going for 140, ten more lb to go..
Jeebus dude, how tall are you? I was sort of skinny at 170 and now I’m about 185. not fat still, but I need to be back closer to the 170, and I’m only 5’8″. Now I was FAT at 230, I never want to be back there again. Actually I would say 185 is my upper limit.
BTW, I’m happy to hear you might be settling in somewhere now. You thinking of staying in AZ?
We got a little place in BhC AZ, now I’m hoping the money holds through the end of the year, and start working
I’m 5’10”, always been very thin, 138 is perfect
Good to hear. Wife and I have looked at AZ for retirement, along with SC and TN. AZ is not cheap, that’s for sure, but the state is beautiful, I mean I’d live there for sure.
Last time I was 138 I was probably in 7th grade. But I was about 150-160 in high school with a 30″ waist. I know I’ll never be that thin again, like I said, when I was at 170 everyone was telling me how skinny I was.
I’m about the same. 5’9″ and 135. Max I’ve ever been is 143. I like it just fine.
I have a hard time comprehending. I haven’t been 140 since middle school. Skinny is 190 for me. 205 is a healthy weight for my frame. I ran a marathon at 220.
I’ve managed to almost get myself down to pre-Thanksgiving weight. I’m about two pounds off that. Still hoping to hit 180 by April.
I want to be down to at least 175 by then. But a lot depends on how much muscle weight you have. I was at 185 at 30 and my fat ratio was very low. But I don’t think there’s any chance of getting that much muscle at 59, but I75 might be OK if I start weights again. Otherwise, I looked best at about 172 and stayed there for about 8-9 months before the holiday curse started taking hold. Shitty weather too, I don’t like cold too much, so I haven’t been walking/running as much, adds to the holiday curse when you aren’t burning off 2000 calories every day.
My body fat percentage has been around 26% the past couple of weeks (based on the bathroom scale, I’m sure it’s not that accurate, but it’ll at least provide a trend line). And I’m currently around 200 lbs. My lightest in recent times was 160, but I don’t think I’m getting back down that low anymore without dropping muscle (which I don’t want to do).
I just got back in from a two-mile walk (and I got a horse-ride in before that). Too nice a day not to take full advantage.
I’m up about 7-8 lbs, back over 200, and I’m starting on the drop now. No big holiday plans for the rest of the year, just the wife and me, so no need to go nuts cooking. The hard part is getting my exercise level back up to what it needs to be. At least tomorrow the sun will be out a little earlier!
“just the wife and me”
Same here and no complaints at all.
“The hard part is getting my exercise level back up to what it needs to be”
Same here. I get up and next thing I know it’s getting dark outside. Oh yeah, the days are getting longer again, woohoo!
Really, I shouldn’t be complaining, it never really gets that cold here, or rarely… I can’t remember, you live in PA, right?
Yep, about an hour north of you. Work over at Aberdeen. One of these days you need to take the run up I-83 and meet me for a beer at Gunpowder Falls Brewery.
I have 2 co-workers who live in Aberdeen. Wife and I looked at 3 homes in New Freedom and one between there and Shrewsbury. I’d really like to live up there in York Co, but WTF is up with the taxes? I’m better off just going for Carrol County, the taxes are so much less.
Yes, we should do that sometimes.
I’d really like to live up there in York Co, but WTF is up with the taxes?
Whenever I read the news in PA, I always see talk about property tax relief that never comes.
PA is no longer #1 in gas tax, I guess California got jealous.
Property tax is a bone of contention between my wife (who really wants to stay here for retirement) and myself (who wants to live somewhere the school district isn’t raping me annually).
As DEG mentions, the equity issue on per-student funding (between districts) is unreal. York city horridly lags the county at large, and the variations even within the county bugger reason. Our school district built new schools a generation ago (why is another question) so you would think we should be seeing some tax relief with the bonds all paid off. Nope, our mil rate is still going up. I could of course dig into this, and most likely uncover some unsavory shit – or just get the hell out to someplace where I will care less when that check gets written.
Lancaster Co isn’t as bad as York. If we relocate in PA, it will be out to Bedford Co – the lowest mil rates in the state.
I’m strongly considering a Sig Sauer P226 or P229. My only concern is these aren’t striker type pistols so I’m wondering if this means I’ll be pulling shots due to the action. I’d love some feedback from handgun owning Glibs.
Don’t worry about it. Just make it a habit to shoot your Sig on double action, now and then. Fire, de-cock, fire, de-cock, and so on. I prefer the long DA first pull. You have to mean it.
Thanks TLPB.
Here’s the stripped lower I got yesterday:
https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/oEz8GosFRLOb80zRYnoRRg.B0ryC1fzLThFUpMf51H8bL
Before it magically becomes a gun in PA?
Picked up the upper yesterday too.
https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/vqHeJzqRR56Zeo16mk3aTQ.X1560gs5N6Hu6JDL-Kpo8D
Also, I responded to your email.
I saw, I need to write back. Thanks!
Damn it. I read it as stripper
I’m determined to add a second P220 to my collection. They’re excellent pistols.
A 220 is the only not-a-1911 I haz a serious want for.
I just got the gun bug too…unfortunately it was right before I left for overseas. Oh well. I’ve only shot a few handguns. Your standard issue M9, which I now know sucks balls. My M&P Shield .40, which I bought on a whim because I just got the gun bug and NEEDED something to carry. I swapped out the trigger for an Apex and now it works great. I plan to replace that with a Sig P365 because extra rounds in the same size gun. I also plan on purchasing the Sig P320-M17 because that’s what my career field is switching too and I could always use the extra practice. None of this really matters to you, I guess, except to say that I kind of like Sigs (I also have a Sig 516 that is a tank and is more than likely what I’d be securing the house with anyways, because I’m extremely confident with it).
I’m interested in all of it Mustang. I am limited to a CA compliant gun.
Heh. I’ve had some Massachusetts folks (Progressive types not the folks that post here) say the same thing to me about people having guns for self-defense. I managed to not laugh at them.
Sig Sauer P226 or P229
I’ve fired one of them, I can’t remember which one. I liked it.
As for GlibFit, disc herniation pain is up and down. I tried dumbbell deadlifts with 20 lb dumbbells, and that was too painful. I dropped to 17.5 lb dumbbells, and that was better but still painful. Kettlebell swings with 12 kg kettlebells went well until the very end, and then I had to stop due to pain. Some days by the end of the day I’ll have no pain, some days I’ll still have pain by the end of the day. Mornings can be painful or they can be only slightly painful. Christmas day I head down to Pennsylvania assuming the weather doesn’t take a big dump on me (unlikely). We’ll see what the drive does to me.
On another health note, since I have every risk factor for glaucoma, my eye doc wants me to get a baseline test. He says the newer glaucoma tests are great, but you really need a baseline before you get it in order to have early detection. That is scheduled for after the New Year.
Good fortune on the glaucoma, not a good thing, I hear weed helps a lot,
“the cop said to get a dog”
Well, sure, you should definitely listen to everything a cop says, they’re like geniuses and stuff! ‘I bought a Rottweiler and it ate the baby while I was being robbed!’. Duh!
Ugh. The dreaded air poof test or even worse, the rest a device on your numbed eyeball.
Glaucoma? Just smoke more weed.
Thanks DEG. Good luck with everything.
OMWC must be doing the happy dance.
Ravens clinched home field advantage through the playoff, plus a first round bye.
Go Ravens! Beat the freaking Pats!!
(You know that will be the AFC champ game)
“Go Ravens! Beat the freaking Pats!!”
I doubt it. And if they win the Superbowl, I’m not going to visit any clients in the city for the next week, just like last time.
Sorry, I can’t root for the Ravens.
Nevermore?
Lol
My special little dance always amuses SP.
Jackson is a freak of nature.
Loved the broadcast guys on that one play – LJ: c’mon, get closer, no closer; oh look, I stepped right past you.
No, she replied, the cop said to get a dog.
“You misunderstand. I wasn’t asking.”
Why even bother having to feed a dog? If you are facing some armed intruders, just talk nice with them, bake them some cookies. Maybe they’ll just take all your stuff and go away. Geez, people are fucking stupid.
I thought you just blast a few warning shots from the porch?
I have dogs. They are very good at giving me a heads up. The gun is usually within easy reach anyway but never hurts to be forewarned.
^^This^^ I’m not too concerned, because anyone that cases my house will see 170lbs of dog, and the big one looks like a wolf.
Delta in-flight entertainment is top notch. Connected to WiFi, watching NFL network in the screen in front of me.
Last time I took American, no screens, no WiFi. Had to use your own phone to watch the crap the plane was broadcasting.
Delta is the only way to fly, in my book.
I flew to Vegas so fast I actually traveled backwards in time,
Tailwind and a Kia
Last time I took Delta was BWI to Atlanta to Brasilia. It seemed pretty nice compared to AA. Did I say how much I hate AA? They’re the Comcast of airlines.
Truly sad that AA has gone so far downhill. They were great 20 years ago.
Delta still wins because they have more comfy seats, great service, and they put their foot down against emotional support animals.
orly *takes notes for future reference*
I don’t remember the last time I flew delta. Probably 10 years. I’m as exclusive to southwest as I can be. They’ve been nothing but good to me.
Delta, Southwest or Alaska. Different carriers for different destinations. Southwest has lost its ticket price advantage but I like the free checked baggage.
Christmas is not a good time to try to hold the weight down, at least not for me. Too many food gifts, people give candy and homemade cookies. I played Santa by delivering my local honey to my friends.
I never learned to shoot a pistol very well, have a couple but mostly my preferences are rifle/shotgun but even at that most of my friends/relatives that I would shoot with are old/gone. I do like a Thompson Contender but a little unwieldy and not too practical for a concealed carry.
Once upon a time I had my apartment in NJ burglarized. An attempt was made to get into my glass fronted gun cabinet, chipped the glass. A week later, Sat night, a pounding on the door at midnight. I had a shotgun behind my back when I opened the door (with a chain on it) and some guy looking for his friend. No one starts randomly knocking at midnight looking for a friend, I wouldn’t think.
I got rid of that gun cabinet and moved to TX and on to MN.
Remember those ads from the back pages of Boy’s Life.
Wasted $8 on a local gun show yesterday. So sad. Just a couple of tables of actual guns, and not a great selection or pricing on the ones I looked at. Rest and mixed in was motley collection of aging militaria, Magpul accessories (that can be gotten anywhere now), small company ammo, and prepper crap.
I find the best thing to do for self protection is to be confident. Sometimes being armed will do that, or being prepared other ways. Sometimes, just having been through a lot will get you there. The less scared you are, the less apt to be victimized you’ll be. Criminals scan people’s faces and movement patterns looking for weakness. If you look right at them and don’t avert your eyes, they will be less apt to choose you. You don’t have to be big or brandish a weapon, just look harder enough than most to take advantage of and you’ll skip the vast majority of crime. Same thing with cops (
they are basically sanctioned criminals) They look for fear and then pounce. Stop fearing them and they mostly leave you alone.
I find fear to be very powerful. It’s basically untenable. You can’t live in it for too long. If it becomes powerful enough, it’ll subtly steer you into the thing you fear. If you fear crime, for instance, you’ll show that to sketchy people you encounter. Eventually, you’ll show it to the wrong one and BAM! you’re the next victim. It works with most things. Strong enough fear will force the feared result.
This is an interesting perspective I’ve not heard before.
I think you’re right.
“I find fear to be very powerful.”
It seems to work when you are dealing with bureaucrats. Confidence and a loud voice. Car salesmen use the same trick on us, just have to be ready with a little preparation makes life easier.
I learned even as an early 20s gal that a well-written letter showing intelligence and willingness to do battle if needed nearly always defuses a conflict and causes aggressors and vultures to go away.
So, just a couple years ago?
I have always been at my most effective and successful when I had nothing to lose (and sometimes I took a calculated risk). The person who can walk away from the negotiation table has the power.
It Is absolutely true.
I’m afraid more now getting older, but I walk tall and give off the don’t fuck with me vibe, it helps….
You should be less afraid.
“Never pick a fight with an old man. He knows he can’t outright whip you so he won’t bother trying. He just shoots you.”
The version I’ve heard is, “don’t mess with a grown ass man, he’ll just kill you”.
This, I’m afraid of getting hurt, or killing someone, I’m too old to care
A cold stare goes a long ways.
Yeah. I find a dead eyed look while you imagine dismembering them sure seems effective.
It works especially well if you have reflective shades.
Stared down a dude twice my size when he got rude with my kid.
Oh, I mean, it works, because they can see themselves being assholes.
Unrelated to all of this, I found another reason to hate the Epic Game Store. Their damned launcher has no download throttling in it. If you tell it to download something (or let it patch), it’ll use up all available bandwidth to download.
This is what I get for trying to make sure there’s some games I know the nephews play on this machine before I give it to them Wednesday.
Hey since you’re in CA (lord have mercy on your soul), you are not too far from either Gunsite (AZ) or Frontsite (NV) – you can take all kinds of classes at either.
Thanks Juris. I’ll have to check those out.
When I bought my GOA life membership, they sent me a certificate for a free course at Front Site. I never got to use it. I planned to head out to Vegas, and then follow up with a trip to the Seattle area. Or was it the other way around? I can’t remember. Anyways, I was supposed to fly out to the first destination on Sept. 12th, 2001.
The trip never happened.
Anyways, I’ve heard good things about both places.
the cop said to get a dog
Because his buddies wanted some target practice?
LOL
+1 internets
Having gotten Moe and being with him for 9 years, if that were to happen it would be a dark day for everyone involved.
If the unthinkable happened here, I’m not even attempting to stop the wife from dismembering the cop.
No seriously dude, you shoot that dog, you better run like a motherfucker. I mean, unless you really want your balls shoved into your mouth.
I like your wife.
Is CA like all the enlightened states with magazine size restrictions? And if it’s like NJ where I have zero chance of being able to carry I’d suggest looking at .45ACP or 10mm full size.
I find the recoil more like push in those calibers with a full size pistol.
I loved my friends P226 and shot really well with it, but here it seems a bit pointless to have double stacked magazine.
They say we’re not quite the absolute worst, but it sure seems like we are. Background checks for ammo, one gun per moth purchase limit, 10 days gun jail for all transfers (private or not), roster of guns we can have based on a very expensive test/submission process, 10 round mag limit, red flag law, cross checking registration and going door to door trying to search and seize, scary assault weapon ban and I think we now cannot build 80% lowers without registration and numbering. Pretty damn bad. I’m missing a bunch of other crap, too.
That’s a pretty complete list Blackjack. Sensei there’s no limit on how many magazines we can have. I’m also concerned about overpenetration since I have neighbors. I’m going with 9mm.
I’ll bow to Suthenboy, but 9mm is hotter round than 45 and I believe 10mm.
I’d think you’d get less over penetration.
That said you have the possibility of carrying, so in that case I’d want smaller and lighter.
You are correct Sensei. 9mm FMJ penetrates like crazy. 45 acp, not so much. the 45 is larger and a lot slower. I give a hell of a wallop when it hits but not much penetration. The 9 will zip through walls, doors, people, just about anything.
Thanks to you both. I just learned something new.
I ended up going with .40 S&W because the ammo for the 9mm wasn’t up to snuff at the time. I do like the feel of shooting a .45.
Oh, yeah, zero chance of carry in all the metro areas. L.A. actually prohibits J frames from being sold in city limits.
I’m in Riverside County. The most recent talk is a year or less to get a CCW permit if your application is complete.
You should check out Calguns.org. Great source of info and a killer classified section. Lot of cool people and they actually lift a finger to fight for our rights, unlike the most powerful lobby on earth.
Thank you, sir!! Duly noted
Will do.
I got my workout today by replacing the broken torsion springs on my garage door. Shoulders are going to be sore tomorrow.
I sliced 5 lbs of raclette cheese, shredded another 3 lbs of Gruyere and Emmenthaler
Holidays make it hard to stay on diet.
Christmas eve eve is fondue, Christmas eve is raclette, Christmas day is ham, beef wellington, gluten-free stuffing (for mother in law), funeral potatoes, brussel sprouts (for me)
I got mine yesterday from toting $600 worth of groceries and alcohol up here from the parking lot, which is about 200 ft and 6 flights of stairs away. I did it as fast as I could and actually broke a sweat and it was 35 F outside. I can’t wait until we have a garage again, but that was a nice workout.
5 lbs of raclette? I think Swiss is already on his way to your house.
If I lived closer you’d have company for 3 days.
I’ll remember you when I break a garage door spring, my Go To Guy isn’t so young any more. (Springs are getting old, too.
Funeral potatoes, splain please,
These. Mormons serve them at funerals, hence funeral potatoes.
My mom always made a lovely crockpot of Salisbury Steak for funerals and hospitalizations.
I called it “death casserole” but man, was it tasty
I use extra sharp cheddar, cream of chicken soup, and lots and lots of green onions. YMMV.
Pro tip: need it to be “cheesier” (’cause even extra-sharp cheddar loses some of its “kick” when it heats up)?
Try using some blue cheese crumbled into the dish. It’s the trick used by some packaged mac ‘n cheese (*COUGH*Kraft Dinner*COUGH*) to amp up the flavour. Works a treat.
Seriously? That’s how you do it?! ?
WTF is blue cheese? Does Velveeta make it? Because my God, if you dared put that shit in funeral anything, no one in your town would die anymore just to save their family. Onions were considered too spicy for my grandfather before he forgot he didn’t like them.
Legit LOL ?
Too bad the funeral potatoes aren’t for mother in law amirite?
Apropos of almost nothing:
I’ve never met a man who didn’t get along with his mother-in-law except my dad.
OTOH, I’ve never met a woman who got along with her mother-in-law (except me, because my MIL is my husband’s stepmother, so she doesn’t have that bit of jealousy).
“A daughter is a daughter all of her life. A son is a son until he takes a wife.”
Ya, it was just a tasteless MIL joke. I have actually gotten along with both of my now ex-mother in laws. #1 was an angry at life unhappy woman who made her kids lives miserable but she actually liked me and we got along fine. It was weird. #2 was a sweet lady who went out of her way to be a kind person. If I don’t take the low hanging fruit for jokes around here I wouldn’t have anything to comment on.
LOL, no, it was just an observation, is all. Your comment reminded me of something I’ve noticed.
All those old Bugs Bunny and Hanna Barbera cartoons and some sitcomes when I was growing up had the running MIL-SIL jokes and it always confused the hell out of me because to me, that wasn’t the real dynamic.
Although, I do have a friend who despises his mother in law and her him. She is a rabid progressive and given his lifestyle, (guns, hunting…etc) if he pissed her off enough he says she is the kind who would have no problem calling in a red flag on him just because she thinks guns are evil.
“Too bad the funeral potatoes aren’t for mother in law amirite?”
Nah. She has been pretty good to me.
That’s good. #tastelessjokes
I get along really well with my MIL.
#pilingon
She is pretending.
I went through 4 pans of funeral potatoes in a week.
I had several pistols before the boating accident. The bedroom gun was a S&W 686+(.357). I had a Springfield XDM in .40 S&W in a clip on holster as my hiking gun, and a S&W M&P Shield in .40 S&W as an “oh shit”, and concealed carry gun. The 1911s sit in the safe because they’re too pretty to carry on a regular basis.
I agree with the advice above. You need to fire a bunch of different pistols to see what fits you best.
S&W 686+
Love those. On my list for future purchase.
I’m between that and the 66 for a 357.
I really like my Ruger GP100, but I’ve not shot enough to say it’s better than any other model.
Everyone who has the GP100 seem to love it.
I love my 4″ stainless GP100
Mine was the Talo version. It had a smooth cylinder. I swapped out the wood grips for Hogues. Sadly, it was a very nice piece.
You must be devastated. I think I saw those in the catalog. What a beauty. Love that you can shoot .38spl through it all day long and leave it loaded with .357.
Who am I kidding? It’s sitting in the nightstand loaded with Hornady hollow points. I will kill you dead and deal with the hearing loss later. I can shoot a box of .38, but only one cylinder of .357. Arthritis sucks.
Coincidentally, I had several boats before the pistol accident.
“ My only concern is these aren’t striker type pistols so I’m wondering if this means I’ll be pulling shots due to the action.“
Pulling shots to the left or right with a single/double is something that can be overcome with training. If you think you aren’t going to make it to the range very often I’d recommend something with a consistent trigger pull. Not a Glock necessarily but something striker fired or even a good revolver.
My gun instructor (for CC in Minnesota) said I had the smoothest revolver trigger pull he’d ever seen.
I was rather pleased.
I don’t have the steadiest hands so I’m not a great shot with one but they work great for some people. They’re old tech but shouldn’t be disregarded, especially in a state where your legal capacity is limited anyway.
“ in a state where your legal capacity is limited anyway.”
Yeah, in no way did any of my glocks make it out here with more than a 10 round capacity..:
That’s great, because a good revolver trigger pull transfers over well to a pistol.
I still think if I had an intruder and a split second to choose, I’d pick up the revolver.
Just more “mileage” and comfort with it.
Definitely go with what you’re confident with. I need to get my old .38 out. I haven’t given it any love for a long time.
Revolvers just work every fucking time. If you get a dud round, just pull the trigger again and the next one will work. No other concerns like a semiauto.
This is why I’m leaning so hard on a revolver for my CC, if/when I get one.
I’m going to make roasted green beans and a pan fried steak. I’d grill, but it’s windy and raining. So, first time using a convection oven. We’ll see. The condo has a microwave/convection oven combo. If it works out, I may replace my microwave with one. It’s probably the only way I could get two ovens, and I’ve always wanted two.
Where are you vacationing? I saw you say beach earlier. Wherever it is I am envious.
Florida, near Daytona
I have some bakers in the oven and a couple of lamb shoulder chops marinating right now that I’m going to pan fry.
I picked up a half steer raised by a friend of mine yesterday. Tonight is grilled t-bone with Basque croquettas.
A lovely art piece for our (((friends)))

A dragon guarding his gold?
I do think the artist is hinting that.
I like the dredel
A Jooh dragon. They run the world’s monetary system, dontcha know.
I thought gold wrapped chocolate was a (((thing))) at Hannukah.
It is. It’s Chanukah gelt.
Happy Chanukah, buddy.
SNL actually does something funny, by reviving something old.
Eddie’s showing his age. Good that he’s getting enough to eat. He’s still the same funny guy though.
Ha!
I don’t think I imagined the recent NYT article proclaiming her to be a genius.
Your Speaker of the House
“I’m strongly considering a Sig Sauer P226 or P229. strongly considering a Sig Sauer P226 or P229.”
Excellent choices! Triggers vastly Superior to a Glock. I just spent some range time with my buddy’s 229 about a month ago and it was dead on accurate. My only nit would be the long decocker, but you’re not decocking until you’re done shooting so that is just a nit:) I would say go for it.
Thanks Almighty JB.
You might want to think about the RX version if you can afford it. Optics are the way things are headed and it’s cheaper to buy it already milled for an optic than send it to a gunsmith later. The sights on the Sig’s are excellent so not saying you need the RX at all but just an option to consider when purchasing.
If you’re looking at California compliant Sigs, definitely consider the P225. It’s a single stack 9mm.
Before the tragedy of my canoe turning over I had nearly 100 pistols. I shot my first one when I was 4 years old. I had two pistols in my collection that belonged to great grandfathers and pistols that belonged to every generation since. I have burned through nearly 3 million rounds in my life. Holding a pistol is one of the most natural feeling things I can do. I am also an old fucker so stay the fuck off of my lawn. Consider that with my advice.
I carry two.
1) a Sig P938. It functions exactly like a 1911 yet small enough to carry in my pocket
2) a Smith and Wesson J-frame 38 special with a 3″ barrel.
First time pistol owner I recommend the Smith and Wesson. It is plenty of firepower yet not too much recoil. Simple operation: point, pull the trigger. In double action it is a long heavy trigger pull which functions as a safety. It is nearly impossible to have it fire accidentally. It is also extremely reliable. It isn’t going to malfunction. Perfect gun should the wife need to use it. On a 1 to 10 scale I put it as a 10 and the next best as a 5.
https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearms/performance-center-model-442-crimson-trace-lg-105-lasergrips
My .38 is my wife’s favorite gun.
My gf is not a fan of my 642. ?♂️
But then, she has her own boating accident bait anyway.
My 686+ had a three inch barrel. I think it’s the perfect length for self defense.
I’m going to read by the fire and drink this.
One of, if not my favorite stout.
Enjoy it. This year’s was the last planned release according to Founder’s.
Glad you mentioned that. Have to get my fill at the pub before they run out!
I think I’m going to make gingerbread today. Not sure.
Fun and yummy.
I have whipping cream left over from Tday and I don’t want it to go bad.
Oh shit!

I hate to laugh, but I can’t help myself.
Damn. That looks like something out of Blues Brothers.
Interstate pileups are no bueno.
The speed some of those trucks are traveling should be cause to lose a CDL given the conditions.
The camera man should be staked out for the next truck going through for filming that whole thing in portrait mode.
How about that Philip Lindsey eeh?!
Not supposed to be a re.
I think I am going to break down and buy another gun soon but I cant really justify spending the money. Ugh.
I really really really want a long slide 10mm double stack 1911 or this: https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearms/model-69-combat-magnum
That Dan Wesson Bruin is pretty sharp.
I would love to own one of these.
https://www.edbrown.com/executive-carry/
No doubt. Ed Brown is way out of my price range for a pistol though.
I can’t justify the price, so I don’t own one.
Yes it is. It is a single stack but the double stack isn’t a hard requirement. I could live with a single. That pistol is already on the list.
I’ve had a lot of 3rd gen s&w autoloaders on my gunbroker watch list recently.
I’ll probably cool off a bit with the new AR build pending. Probably.
?
Always been an M1A1/Mini-14 guy but lately I have been toying with the idea of an AR-10.
Again, I cant really justify spending that much on something like that. It’s not like I didn’t already have something for everything.
Yeah, we’re way past “needs” here too. But we’re still having fun shopping.

3k in centerfire in the past 2 weeks.
I’ve heard about reliability concerns on the ar-10 platform. Any legitimate concern there?
I don’t know, I dont know enough about the ARs. The only advice I have gotten so far is ‘dont try to build a 308 on a platform designed for 223. Get one made specifically for 308.’
I have a Sig 716 and love it. Great shooter. Does have an adjustable gas system but I’ve never had to mess with it.
Mini-14 is a chick gun.
Unanticipated effect
Truck drivers in California are bracing for the devastation from the state’s new “gig economy” law that could threaten up to 70,000 jobs.
The law is intended to target the gig economy by revising the standards by which independent contractors are classified in order to force companies like Lyft and Uber to pay them like employees and provider employer benefits.
But the unintended consequences of the law appear to be spreading to other industries, including truck drivers.
——-
The law would effect “owner-operator” truck drivers who own their own trucks and take jobs from different companies in order to determine their own schedules and negotiate for better wages.
The debate over the law forced one California state lawmaker to face a protest by exotic dancers in San Diego by bringing a porn actress to debate her support of the law.
The law has already led to hundreds of writers for the sports site SB Nation being unceremoniously fired by Vox Media through a tweet on social media.
The “gig economy” law goes into effect on January 1, 2020.
Stevie Wonder coulda seen that coming.
Gawd I’m so glad I’m out of that state.
Hell yes…..
hundreds of writers for the sports site SB Nation being unceremoniously fired
This statement is supposed to garner sympathy?
Yes, because those are good people. Uber and Lyft drivers are bad people.
“When they see the reality of their world of social justice, they won’t like it very much.”
No. Shit.
Bullshit. They will bitterly cling to their precious social justice in defiance of all facts burned into their eyes. And calmly and smugly announce “it’s for your own good”.
So true. The law’s sponsor was confronted with the job losses among writers. She doubled down on her shitty law.
Apparently they are done destroying their electric utilities.
Have they nationalized it yet?
Turns out that “What did commies use to light their homes before candles?” isn’t a joke.
“unintended consequences”.
On Red State they have some stories about the Cunte that helped write the new law and her tweets defending it. It’s as rage inducing as you would expect
This is infuriating. I’ve done contract work for decades and it’s not easy. Juggling schedules for 8,9 or even 10 jobs, but it was my choice. I wanted the freedom and flexibility to do what I wanted. They are screwing with people who don’t want to do the one company thing. Anti-freedom assholes.
Harder to keep track of.
The 1099 is a fairly tight leash, but I have a billionaire client and he paid me quite a bit of money last year. But for him it was pocket change and he didn’t even think about sending me a 1099.
This is what the government doesn’t like.
Yep. It’s like having a psychotic and over possessive girl friend with her own SWAT team.
It’s also why I don’t have a problem with people hiring illegals under the table.
IMO, the black market is an essential part of any healthy economy. It’s especitally essential in an environment of overregulation.
^good point & food for thought
If you start at “The government forcing me to give them my money is immoral and unethical,” suddenly a whole lot of things become moral.
Not to mention fucking over people who have a full-time job, can’t commit to a second one, but can make extra money by doing gig work. The gig work is also a great backup in case you lose your primary job. It may not provide a comfortable living, but I’m sure it eases the situation by providing at least a little income.
Fuck them. They want everyone either working for a giant corporation or living on welfare. Can’t have people improving their lot by their own initiative.
Maybe I don’t get how Uber and Lyft work, but are they actually playing the drivers or do the drivers pay them a fee to use the app. Not that i imagine that would matter to the assholes in government trying to horn in on the business just curious.
I think I am going to break down and buy another gun soon but I cant really justify spending the money.
Same here. I am teetering precariously on the brink of buying an 80% 1911 frame, before California and New Jersey get the ATF to ban them.
Because just because.
Trying a new Christmas beer I picked up at a local brewery. It’s a spiced brown ale brewed with coffee. It’s a nice change of pace from all of the other spiced ales around at this time.
One of the local breweries does an annual barrel aged stout in several styles. They did one with chocolate and orange this year. All the orange adds is a bit of citric acid to cut through the richness. I had one of these today.
https://untappd.com/b/sockeye-brewing-kiss-of-death/2935969
Speaking of barrel aged stouts… there’s an upside to the Sam Adams/Dogfish Head merger. Utopias Barrel Aged World Wide Stout is coming next year.
I’ll keep an eye out for that.
If it’s as good as the oak-aged vanilla bean variant that came out a couple years back, it should be pretty damned tasty. It’s not on the official release calendar yet, so here’s hoping it’s currently just sitting in the barrels aging instead of still being fermented.
I have a CZ P-07 which is a double-action hammer gun. Used the Beretta M9 in the military and a shooting buddy has the Beretta Px4 Storm – all also double-action. I find I prefer double action. You really have to want to fire that first shot if the hammer is down – which I like. After the first, the trigger is light and smooth which is great if you are into an actual fight at that point. I never cared for striker pistols since every shot is with a mediocre trigger.
You might want to find a range that rents handguns. Try any stiker like a Glock and compare to a double-action like Beretta if they have both types.
They will bitterly cling to their precious social justice in defiance of all facts burned into their eyes. And calmly and smugly announce “it’s for your own good”.
They are trying to make the world a better place, but the wreckers and kulaks keep taking making them look bad.
I’m considering getting a .38 special snub-nose as a CC gun? Something like this. Thoughts?
I would look at the S&W M&P Shield. It has a thinner profile.
https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearms/mp-9-shield-0
That’s what I have. Nice gun.
I added Talon grips and it’s just right.
See my recommendation above. You cant beat that with a stick.
Incidentally, if you get one like that get the 38. There is no point in putting 357s in a short barrel like that. You will get the same velocity as the 38 but a lot of excess powder will burn out of the barrel making a blinding flash. At night the first shot will temporarily blind you.
BG38 is only rated for +P, not .357
Yep. Planned on 38 for the reasons you stated. That, and I already have a lot of 38 on-hand for “plinking” with my GP100.
Try that and a 642 and see which one you like better.
It’s kind of ugly…
https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearms/model-642-0
Sexy and no lock. ?
I’m more of a function over form kinda guy.
But that is a pretty gun.
No lock? And that? Sign me up.
I’m considering getting a .38 special snub-nose as a CC gun? Something like this. Thoughts?
Rock Island makes one. The price is attractive.
They do one in hammerless, too.
Ruger makes a great 38 snub that’s is very light with a great double action trigger.
LCR is my carry pistol.
Now we’re talking. This just jumped up my list. Thanks, Brooks.
(I neglected to mention in my OP that I am also a tight-ass)
How about that. Denver won.
You won’t feel so bad when that Rock Island snubby accidentally falls out of your pocket as you’re crossing a bridge, either.
*knowing look*
This sort of thing is part of the reason I’m looking “cheap”.
I have another problem, well, We have another problem.Wendy had her foot amputated on Saturday and after I left today she had a stroke, they just called and told me everything going on, very nice of them. My problem is Facebook, as soon as I tell one family member it’s splashed all over with drama, Wendy doesn’t want that and neither do I, what to do…..
Damn, Bob. How bad a stroke? Very mild, hopefully? Did the operation knock a clot loose or something?
Sorry 🙁
Same. Good thing about Facebookulosis is that the cure is simple.
Blessings to you both!!
The Stroke was minor as such things go, I thought she was just high on her pain meds, from experience, they said it was bacterial blockage as opposed to plaque, so maybe not so bad, she can speak still
Wow. I would just keep it off FB until you’re ready to deal with the drama.
This. FB is the devil.
Second.
I don’t do Facebook but the fucking Stasi come out of the woodwork and try to screw with our lives whenever she gets ill
That’s a good sign.
I am sorry to hear that. Geez, you cant win can you.
Welcome to the party. My dog wounds are all healed up, Wife here is sorta back on her feet. The break has mostly healed and she isn’t stuck I n the chair all the time anymore and……I got some kind of eye infection. Left eye, bottom lid swelled up enough to block my vision. I have no idea what it is but it is a bitch.
Shit, every time you turn around….
I’m used to life, and enjoy those moments of happiness, sometimes few and far between, hey We ain’t dead yet…
Back in love again?
You’re in my prayers
Sorry.
In good news, Cowboys are losing.
SHUT YOUR DIRTY WHORE MOUTH!!!
? = ?
“All he’s gotta do is hang on to the foo…”
Nice run. Smart move to not score and keep from giving the ball back to the Cowboys.
What say you Glibs, is this a good movie?I

Until the end of the world directors cut.
Never seen it but 5+ hours? Nobody needs a five plus hour movie. I’m going to, without evidence, declare it a pretentious slog.
From Wikipedia: “The original version of the film ran 20 hours”
My god.
OMG.
I swear I read a review recently (don’t remember where but somewhere I trust) that praised it.
I say go for it.
My favorite movie ever is Once Upon a Time in America, which runs about 4 hours. I’m not sure if anyone has ever sat all the way through it with me.
Director Sergio Leone wanted to make multiple movies of several hours, like the Godfather trilogy, but the studio wouldn’t go for it. The original US release was a disaster. They cut it down to 1.5 hours, and put it in chronological order, which ruined the whole flashback nature of the film. It totally bombed at the theaters. However, years later the 4-hour version was released on DVD, and it has gained a small following since then.
Even the 4-hour version is somewhat damaged by being cut down to that length. There are a few plot points that are never fully explained. Still, I think it’s an excellent mob movie that would have been up there with Goodfellas and The Godfather if not for the dumbass 1.5 hour version souring a whole generation of moviegoers on it.
We made it about 2.5 hours through. It’s still sitting on our Amazon queue to finish.
Yesterday I attended the class. It was taught by two active duty cops. One of them aspires to having Clancy Wiggum’s physique. The other is futilely trying to stave it off.
Not Melville, but good writing. Give me a pop reference and I’m a happy glib.
Some of the worst gun discipline I’ve seen at the range was cops. Just because they’re carrying gun for a living, they think they know better than everybody else. Anf there are other cops I’ve known that feel exactly the same way.
I think it was funny when there was that list being passed around by Leftists purporting to show hundreds of school shootings in the year 2018, except the only criteria was a gun being fired on school grounds.
Several of the entries were “school resource officers” negligently firing their guns.
“Not Melville”
No one wants to read some stupid story about a giant white fish nowadays anyway.
Right? And “Whitefang” was such a stupid name for it anyway.
Oh, and if anyone out there tried the sketch challenge, time is up this week. Be ready to put up your work and don’t worry if it didn’t turn out as well as you hoped. Mine actually look worse than when I started, but I gave it a shot. DT’s, half blind and no skill to start with. *Shrugs* Fun anyways.
It really has been fun.
I’m not a Glockboi or an ACP addict, but I have carried a G30 for years. It replaced a SW686 that was the epitome of a supremely accurate personal hand cannon, but that bitch was thicc; it just didn’t work in the car or under a tee shirt and was basically open carry in the summer no matter what concealment you tried.
I thought long and hard about Sig, but I never got happy with the idea that DA/SA ideal. I enjoy it at the range, but I don’t like thinking about it. The heavier DA opening round seems like a mistake; I just can’t get happy about the two modes. The Glock always squeezes off the same and patterns tight, even for me, a recovering accuracy whore.
I adore the 1911: its trigger speaks to a guy who was raised by one-shot-one-kill people; but I wanted more rounds and more confidence in EDC than the old cocked-and-locked single-stack. G30 delivers 10+1 of .45ACP. I went with Trijicon in 6mm green because those square stock Glock sights just put me off. Mind you, I shot them well years ago qualifying in Texas in a course much like your own: bring $100, your thumbprint card, and 100 rounds and walk away with a nice kit to mail off for your state credentials; there is absolutely nothing wrong with a NIB Glock for off-the-shelf shootability: I put boxes of rounds in the same hole that day and had never hardly seen much less shot a Glock before.
I believe in delivering girth. Have a look: the HST repeatedly and flawlessly blooms to 0.900: there will be blood. At 400 ft-lb but only 900 fps, every dyne downrange will stick in the bad guy . . . no punching through him. You’re getting to hit him with a sledge-hammer that will core 3″ diameter rings through his guts and jugs. I don’t participate in the caliber debates much: it takes 1,000 foot-pounds to reliably stop a 200 pound mammal with one round WHICH NO REASONABLE PISTOL ROUND CAN DELIVER. So when you carry you’re committing to repeatedly shooting until the threat is ended. For these reasons, I think .45 is a defensible defense round.
So instead of playing shooting gallery and cutting nine-rings with a Kimber 1911, I’m learning to run a G30. I’ve never held a gun so firmly before; I’ve never compromised so heavily for speed over accuracy, but getting lead in the air is the answer in combat, and tiny groups on paper are irrelevant to filling up center mass; I didn’t make the rules, but I must acknowledge them.
I agree with everyone: rent everything, shoot everything. You’ll practice with what is fun, and what is fun is what fits and hits. If that’s 9mm single stack, so be it. If you swing Sig, we will still be friends.
