All here is chaos, but at least there’s a “here” here. So we got that goin’ for us. Poor SP is stuck at home trying to create small pockets of order while I relax at work all day. And of course, the first thing that’s happened on my new job is that I have to travel right back to where we started for most of next week. The folks I’m working with there are telling me, “Yeah, it’s pretty much an ice rink outside this week. But don’t worry, it will be above zero. Mostly.”
Great.
But at least Spud can take the morning off from pinch-hitting for me. And I can get back to Fun Birthdays. And today’s birthday list includes one of my favorites among the Founding Fathers, Thomas Paine, whose work is just as readable, profound, and relevant today as it was in the 18th Century. Common Sense ought to be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the motivations of libertarians. And along that same vein, it’s also the birthday of my absolute favorite US President, one who set an example that all the rest should have emulated- we’d be much better off. There’s a whole list of other notables, but jesus, these two are a tough act to follow.
Let’s go to the news.
Man, those Duke athletes never get a break. “It’s not just lacrosse any more!”
Maduro doubles down. I’m predicting either lamppost or woodchipper.
Assuming they can fight Maduro off, because he has mad skillz as a soldier. If it weren’t for the starving millions, that ass-clown would be hilarious.
This is the sort of thing that has made Chicago the financial Rock of Gibraltar that is today.
Here is a glimpse into my future.
This just seems weirdly familiar. “We want to live, Jews, give us work permit.”
Someone challenges Nikki for the title of “The Worst.”
I know what *I* want for Valentine’s Day. Oh man, what a great idea.
Old Guy Music time, yet again. If you want to skip the extraneous stuff and get to the breath-taking playing, start it at about 1:35, but some of the extraneous stuff is funny as hell. Willy Porter is a god.
Glad you’re at ‘home’ and settling in. We’re were concerned about the way things weeren’t being run around here.
Too early, typing skills need more work. Also you now have to start the Glib day an hour earlier than the Good Old Days of Chi-town. Good luck
I’m guessing Danny Ferry or Christian Latner regardless of the evidence produced.
Am I gonna have to stomp a bitch?

*Snark off* Just to be clear, Spud, OMWC, Brett, Banjos, Swiss et al have done a great job with the links. Hope you guys don’t think that giving our overlords some shit means we don’t appreciate it. *Snark back on*
^This.
These are my kind of overlords: figure it out for yourselves dammit.
^ Exactly ^ I think the majority of us know that shit giving is the name of the game around here.
Really, it would be offensive if you didn’t give them shit.
Yes, the flipping out over sarcasm was…odd.
Some might even say it was “apology-worthy”
Did I do any of that?
No
Thanks. I’ve discovered I have an amazing ability to piss people off. It’s a superpower I’d like to shed.
Don’t you get it? The government gives people money every spring. It’s like Uncle Sam’s Christmas Club, and you want to take that away.
For shame, Sir.
I tried to explain to a former supervisor that getting a big refund was a bad thing.
*blank stare*
Me: You should decrease your withholding so you have more to spend over the year.
Supervisor: Nah, I don’t want to do that. I use my tax refund to pay off my credit card debts
Me: *face palm*
I pay every year, because when my employer changed at the end of 2015, I changed my withholding do to it having been insanely high in the first few months of the job and I was going to get a ridiculous refund. I haven’t changed it since out of inertia
I’m not a high-earner, and seeing how much I have to pay by writing that extra check really shows just how much government is stealing from us all.
I was about to adjust my withholding to get a small refund next year, but I thought twice of it. Uncle Sugar can be the one giving the interest free loan going forward.
See, this is why I love our commenters. It was something screamingly evident to us that needed no explaining for the snark, yet most people totally don’t get it.
Oldsters will remember the banks’ favorite deal, the Christmas Club.
I confess, my refund will be a little bigger. “. The tax cut shows up in the refund this year. Since the law is only for 2 more years I’m gonna let it ride.
“Prez Trump has been very, very good to me”
In my Chico Esquvela voice
Yeah. Just wait until we’re in the middle of a recession and Team Blue and President Harris want to repeal the Trump tax breaks.
Just like Obama backed off repealing the “Bush Tax Breaks”.
NBC ran it as people are getting smaller refunds because Trump.
He is responsible for everything that goes wrong, you don’t like, or just appears unfair. Makes sense to me.

Last night my wife and I went to a local restaurant. While we were eating appetizers, a short Italian man walked in and I thought “he looks a lot like Andrew Napolitano”. As he was walking by our waitress said “welcome back, Judge”. Didn’t expect a star sighting in Hackettstown, New Jersey.
For a few minutes he was at the counter next to our table while waiting for his party’s table to be ready. I said “Hi Judge” to him and otherwise left him alone. My wife had no idea who he was. The hilarious part was that he has personal conversations with exactly the same verbal cadence and emphatic finishes to sentences as he does when discussing the Constitution or a legal case. It was funny to hear that voice talking about staying in Jersey on Friday and doing errands.
Cool! I saw a federal judge (Joe Scoville) at a Grand Coney for lunch once. He rode the shuttle to get there, easier than leaving the spooky federal basement parking ramp. He also taught me Con Law, he was a super tough professor. Not the same fame level as Napolitano though!
You mean he was allowed to eat a meal in peace? Antifa must really be slacking off…
Red sector of a Blue state.
Ah that’s right, they are only brave Nazi punchers when they are on their home turf and can easily slip back into the bandana wearing crowd
That’s pretty cool, glad he was able to chill at the restaurant in peace.
Very cool.
I said “Hi Judge” to him and otherwise left him alone.
It’s funny because that’s one of his catchphrases…”The Constitution is the right to be left alone
I’d be really tempted to ask him some rhetorical questions.
I was more tempted to ask what kind of wine he was bringing (it’s a BYOB).
I shall now parade my ignorance openly before the mob. What’s the deal with this Guaido guy? Was there an actual election (and did he win it?)?
He won the election of CIA spooks and Deep staters. You know, the election that counts.
He’s President of their legislature, elected by members, so kind of like Speaker of the House. That makes him second in line of succession for President of Venezuela, after the Vice President.
What if Mike Tyson were gay?
He’d be Luis Suarez?
Didn’t Ol’ Mike do some time in the slammer? If that didn’t make him a convert what would?
Prison gay ≠ “gay” gay
My guess is he was the big spoon.
Leave me out of this
“The United States is prepositioning relief items — including food, nutritional supplements, hygiene kits and medical supplies — in Colombia so they are available to reach those most in need in Venezuela as soon as possible,” a U.S. official told The AP.
What about the guns and ammo?
I’m pretty sure Colombia has lots of guns and ammo.
“As a man and as a father I hope this terrible thing stops,” he said, “and that the people of Gaza will put their children at the top of their priorities.”
I suppose if human shields are considered priorities, you wish is granted.
And there it is:
Venezuela has been in a political crisis since Guaidó, the president of the National Assembly, declared himself interim president last month.
Sounds legit.
“declared himself interim president last month”. For life
It never fails to amuse me how they don’t see the downside to that “for life” declaration. It’s like agreeing to the outcome when they come and stand you in front of the wall.
He declared himself President after the legislature excercised their Constituional perogative to declare Maduro illegitimate and install Guaido in his place. He’s also required to hold elections within 45 days but Maduro’s refusal to step down is mucking that up a bit. I expect the Military will eventually take care of business and Maduro will go wherever the countries hold reserves ended up.
From the sidebar of the Chicago story:
Mom convicted in death of baby found in maggot-infested diaper
You’ll have to read the article to find whether the baby or the mom was found in the maggot-infested diaper.
Too early, too sad. I’m all about some 4th trimester abortion of the parents.
Just put a bullet in each of the parents.
Do them like Pancho Villa used to – line them up and just use one bullet. No need to splurge on human garbage like these.
My problem with cases like these is that if the parents ever truly come to terms with what they did, they will be fundamentally broken individuals and will probably kill themselves.
If they do not, then they deserve to be offed anyway.
I didn’t click on it. My hatred of some people is already over the red line.
It can be summed up as horrifying indifference.
Old Guy Music – I’m sure the guy’s talented but he’s giving off a Dave Mattews vibe and I’m having bad 90’s flashbacks. Filthy Neo-hippies with underfed pets selling questionable goat cheese sandwichs outside of music festivals *shivers*
Other than Dave Matthews sucks and that guy doesn’t, you’re exactly right.
“Filthy Neo-hippies with underfed pets selling questionable goat cheese sandwichs outside of music festivals *shivers*”
My wife loves festivals. We drive all over the state several times per year to attend various festivals. I dont mind too much, if it makes her happy I am glad to do it.
It is the same vendors at every single one of them, so, whatever. My wife doesnt understand why I hate the smell of patchouli. I mostly just keep it to myself.
Do the dreadlocked white girls still do the spinning and bouncing in pastel sundresses, showing pit hair and lack of coordination in equal parts regardless if the music is Dead-head jam band or deth metal?
Dreadlocked white girls. I forgot about those.
*facepalm*
I just buy food and try to be invisible.
Good news! At your age you are already invisible to teenage girls.
“Filthy Neo-hippies with underfed pets selling questionable goat cheese sandwichs outside of music festivals.”
That’s beautiful, TH.
Indeed – that does paint a verbal picture, no?
From the description, it sounds like your ass will paint a picture about 3 hours after eating one of those questionable goat cheese sandwiches. Sort of a Jackson Pollock, in brown.
Hopefully only brown.
The audiences at Willy’s shows are not exactly… in that demographic. Prosperous-looking middle-aged and older white people. Mostly professional types. Never whiffed anyone smoking a joint.
Well then what’s the point?
More seriously, a few observations.
A) He gives out a *serious* DMB sound.
B) DMB is actually a very good musician and so are all band members.
C) Carter Beauford is a magician and my favorite drummer of all time.
D) DMB’s problem is their fans, not the music. (Caveat: Only listen to live versions of their songs, and even then only from their first 3.5 albums.)
In other news, I am about to get stoned and go to Conner Prairie in Indianapolis, to watch my mom/others in a living museum recreating 19th century farm life.
Everything about this is a fantastic idea.
Connor Prairie, eh? Went there on a 4th grade field trip. Riveting.
Except DMB isn’t a band, it’s a rhythm section. Their best song is the one where they brought in John Popper to play a lead instrument.
I grew up less than a mile from there. Their fall festivals are top notch.
One of my high school classmates used to be a blacksmith over there. If you see a 30 something guy who is about 6’4″, rail thin, and acts like he’s 80, that’s the guy.
Weatherpocalypse!
TW: Weather Channel
Seattle and other parts of Washington and the Pacific Northwest felt the full wrath of Winter Storm Maya as heavy snow fell Friday. In Washington, Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency as conditions worsened Friday afternoon.
“Weather forecasters predict this may be a storm unlike one we’ve seen in many years,” the governor said in the release.
For hours, heavy snow fell Friday on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and in the higher terrain elsewhere. Along the Olympic Peninsula, towns that hardly see a few inches of accumulating snow per season picked up a foot or more in one day.
No mention of Global warming, surprisingly.
Heavily implied though.
Unsusual weather = KLIMUT CHAINJZ!
Yep, even though the same thing happens about every 7 years. It’s almost like the Almanac could have told you what was going to happen.
We’re at about two inches right now with 10-15mph winds. Not exactly a storm worthy of a name.
This BS by The Weather Channel is frustrating to me. It is nothing but a marketing gambit for dressing up standard winter frontal systems. Cyclonic storms were named to ease meteorologists communicating as they kept track of them. Cyclones are “small” and multiple storms can be in a small area. e.g. During 2017 at one point Hawaii had three separate cyclones in the state’s waters.
I guess winter fronts bringing “weather” is not as sexy to TWCs viewers as “Stormagedeon Adolf” is.
The easy answer to the anti-natalists is to remind them they the option to kill themselves.

Instead, he asks: What made millennials the way they are? Why are they so burned out? Why are they having fewer kids? Why are they getting married later? Why are they obsessed with efficiency and technology?
And his answer, in so many words, is the economy. Millennials, he argues, are bearing the brunt of the economic damage wrought by late-20th-century capitalism. All these insecurities — and the material conditions that produced them — have thrown millennials into a state of perpetual panic. If “generations are characterized by crises,” as Harris argues, then ours is the crisis of extreme capitalism.
I spoke to Harris about the case he lays out in the book, and why he thinks millennials will have to overthrow the system and rewrite the social contract if they want to meaningfully improves their lives — and the lives of future generations.
1) Tear down Western Civilization
2) Rewrite social contract
3) …………
4) UTOPIA!
I’m sure they would have been happier being born into 1930’s Soviet Union or 1950’s China.
Vox, go screw yourself. How about we actually operate under free-market capitalism, then we can see if your bullshit still stands. The only crisis I see as a millennial is the the ever increasing government authority and the people who are cheering this expansion.
There’s a reason they can’t see. Why the Left Isn’t Convinced by Your Economics Arguments.
They seem to not have a problem believing in shoddy macroeconomics .
Hits the nail on the damn head.
Give the TL;DR version of what to do:
Thus, the only hope in making good economic theory convincing, to someone who is not already sympathetic, lies in two things:
Convincing the listener it is possible to believe laissez-faire economic theory and still be a reasonably decent and humane person.
Present a version of history in which markets can be shown to be the most critical factor in actually and empirically improving the lives of ordinary human beings.
I like those things, and I do agree. I would definitely try those strategies with people who haven’t been “educated” so long. It’s pretty damn hard to try convincing people (at least IME the ones around my age) about any of this when all they care about is the color of your skin, “privilege”, and superficial nonsense that have nothing to do with the conversation.
Except that the leftists to whom you’re trying to explain things are NOT “reasonably decent and humane”, and aren’t interested in “improving the lives of ordinary human beings”.
They want to be in control. They tell others (and sometimes themselves) that they are these things, but these are lies. They want to be God. They will not be convinced by any logic or reason.
And not particularly informed or literate.

These people don’t know shit. When I was a pup, there were POOR people all over the place. Poor as in trying to find some food. A/C was for rich people, airplane travel was out of the question, poverty was serious.
These people are pissed because they gotta hold off on upgrading to the newest I-phone. In the hoods of L.A. , there’s nothing but shiny cars and no hint of the dirt poor that was there in the ’70s. It’s fucking sad.
What’s sadder is that, when I was a kid, I’d hear the older generation talk about how soft WE WERE! they went through WW2, the depression and some hard suffering.
Then I wonder if every generation feels exactly like this, but it sure seems like this one has a pussy assed whinyness about it that I don’t think would’ve ever happened back when…
Yeah, when I was a kid in the mid to late’60s, Pater Dean had a good job (middle management at a specialty refinery). We lived in a two bedroom, one bath house that was, at a guess, not quite fifteen hundred square feet, had one car, and a swamp cooler. That was solidly middle class. One of our neighbors had a color TV (fancy!).
By the mid-70s, after a couple of promotions, we lived in a three bedroom, two bath house that was probably less than 2,000 square feet, had central air (luxury!), and two cars, and would probably be considered still solidly middle class, maybe a little on the higher side. Bro Dean and I shared a hand-me-down car from Abuela Dean; I don’t think we each had our own car until late in college.
I frequently hear stuff that my family and I do on a regular basis being classified as poverty. Packing lunches? Only poor people do that. Buy baby clothes used? You’re poor. 50 year old house that needs renovation? You must be poor! Doing my own plumbing/electrical? Poverty. Keeping cars until the wheels fall off? Poor. Backyard garden? 75 year old poor person. Shopping at Aldi? Food desert.
Consider the McDouble. A monumental.achievement in capitalism. Cheap, yummy calories in a sammich. I’ll take 2.
This fucking junior high textbook version of the late 1800s has got to go. All classes of society got wealthier, prices of major commodities went down, and technological innovations were growing like kudzu.
Few people actually study this period in history; they just believe everything they’re told. Sour-faced capitalists in top hats kidnapping children from home and forcing them to work in factories at gunpoint. That’s all they see.
3) Eat the rich.
Human nature being what it is, why would the people setting up and running the new system be any different from the ones in the current one?
“millennials will have to overthrow the system”
Call me skeptical if you will, but I’m not seeing millennials overthowing anything. Most of them probably cannot even manage their own affairs without mum and are still living in her basement. What? They will emerge from the basements in great numbers and the glorious revolution will lead us to utopia!? Umm, I don’t think so.
Yeah many of them have issues balancing a checkbook, but they want to run the world.
Jordan Peterson said something to the effect of “they can’t clean their rooms but feel qualified to engineer an economic system.”
A lot like the furloughed FedGov workers in that regard.
It is nothing less than a call for communist revolution. I think you are right that there isn’t enough fervor amongst the young to get one rolling, but it’s not for lack of trying.
But that’s the problem, isn’t it? They’re dumb and naive enough to fall for the marxist horseshit, in spite of how many times it’s been disproven.
It takes a looooottttt of work to talk about and then set in motion a revolution. I don’t think they have that kind of drive. AOC does though. Keep an eye on that loon.
Maybe. Ocasio-Cortez has never experienced serious hardship, opposition, or anything that would reveal that she has all that much drive. So far, her life has been utterly typical except for her surprise primary win.
Millennials couldn’t over throw a starbucks

A much smarter Malcolm than I, Malcolm X, said you don’t have revolutions without bloodshed, and he was probably right. But we’re in a situation now where the ruling class feels so powerful and I’m not sure what it will take to change things.
I mean, we have thousands of Americans dead in Puerto Rico, and that’s an attack by the ruling class. You had all these vulture funds that swooped into Puerto Rico, threw them even deeper into debt, and eviscerated the public services, and people died because of it. That’s an attack by any definition.
Yeah, I’m not sure your Bike Lock Brigade is going to come out on top.
And, speaking of Puerto Rico- I’m gonna just say it; the best way to fix government graft and incompetence is not to make that government more powerful.

Serious to who exactly?
“The antinatalist argument goes like this: Pain is bad, while the absence of any experiences can’t possibly be bad.”
Can’t possibly be bad eh? You really need to twist yourself into some rhetorical knots to get there.
“‘There’s no point to humanity,’ Samuel told the BBC. ‘So many people are suffering. If humanity is extinct, Earth and animals would be happier. They’ll certainly be better off. Also no human will then suffer. Human existence is totally pointless.'”
Struggling to understand why this guy is wasting his time filing a lawsuit when prescription drugs are cheap and unrestricted in India. Just go buy a couple hundred Halcion and a bottle of vodka and your problem is solved before the end of the day.
This reminds me of the pseudo intellectual absurdity of The Cider House Rules intimating that being aborted is preferable to life in an orphanage. The definition of subjective good and bad are predicated on individual existence. Arguing that not existing is a subjective metaphysical good is as ridiculous as debating whether it’s better to own a cat or a unicorn as a pet.
As I pointed out above, if you’re not willing to kill yourself then it’s not that bad.
“If humanity is extinct, Earth and animals would be happier”
You first.
Earth will be happier. Earth. An inanimate object will experience happiness.
Uh huh. I see.
I second what Scruffy said.
Well, actually he implied that it would experience more happiness than it does now.
They’re 5 year olds in adult bodies. Abort babies because they look like scary monsters, don’t eat meat because the animals are sad, don’t hurt Gaia because she has moods.
What about Gaia, Suthen? Huh? Gaia would be happier without us.
Just like the people who just fake-whine “I want to die”, they should just do it if they hate it all so damn much.
This fucking new mouse… Accidentally clicked submit. ANYWAY…
I’m pretty sure animals rarely know what happiness is whether humans are around or not. Nature is not a Disney movie; most animals live horrible lives that are spent frantically searching for food and desperately trying to avoid predators. They will almost certainly die a very painful death due to predators, disease, or starvation.
Dad, you just don’t understand.
Game, set, and match.
Yeah, that cracked me up as well.
“Dad, you just dont understand.”

New home update: Above all else, The Wonder Dog hates turtles. I mean, “hates” as in “goes into an uncontrollable fury when she sees them.” So guess what our new next door neighbor does for a hobby? Yep, they raise tortoises.
This is not going to end well.
Well, the good news is that turtles/tortoises are easily contained by, or excluded by, fencing. The bad news is that some of those fancy tortoises are expensive, particularly the endangered ones.
I assume she is a turtle-gnawer?
She attempts it, then gets even more furious when they pull into their shells and don’t respond. Barking, attempted biting, pounding with paws. And she will NOT give up, it takes extraordinary means to pull her away. Turtles patiently wait it out. I’m not sure if tortoise-owners will be so patient.
Tape a slice of pizza to the back of one of ’em.
My late dog loved to chase armadillos but armadillos have a short attention span and after a few steps would forget why they were running away. When they soon ignored her she pretended she wasn’t really chasing them and would go about smelling every new thing.
How does she get to them? I would think either the neighbor’s yard or your yard would be fenced.
Oh, and welcome to AZ. If turtles are the worst of your problems, you’ve got it easy. Could be bobcats, javalinas, mountain lions, coyotes, rattlesnakes, gila monsters, and I’m sure I am leaving something out.
In all seriousness, you should look into a couple of things for the Wonder Pooch:
(1) Rattlesnake aversion training. Yes, it will likely involve a shock collar. We should probably hit the Dean Beasts with a refresher, now that I think about it. Make sure the trainer has live rattlesnakes (seriously, some just use shed skins, but I think the ones that use live snakes in a clear container are the way to go).
(2) Valley Fever. Dogs from out of state are prone to getting it. I don’t think there is a vaccine, but you should probably get her tested periodically. One of the Dean Beasts got it (we think the Little Fat One’s immune system is as grouchy as she is, and just won’t put up with it), and it can be controlled, but doing so is not cheap.
You left out owls.
A buddy of mine was having a smoke outside his house in Tucson just after the sun set. As he took his last drag he saw an owl swoop down and bound back into the night sky with his neighbor’s cat in it’s talons.
Yeah, if your pet is small enough, that would be another one. The Dean Beasts are just under 50 pounds each (that’s just over 20 kilos, Pie). It would take a pterodactyl to fly off with one.
Which we probably have, and I just haven’t seen them yet.
Don’t forget jumping jack cactus. Fun times.
Never go into the desert without a cheap plastic comb. That few cents of plastic is the most effective way ever found to remove a jumping cholla bud from man, child or beast.
dbleagle speaks wisdom.
My yard is fenced, and yet…the tortise got in.
Mexican tortoises will do that.
Look for tunnels.
I have never seen a turtle in the Sonoran Desert. I have seen plenty of tortoises. When I was growing up one moved into our yard and adopted the family for the next 36 years. If you want to make a tortoise friend, just feed it a grape. You’ll have a friend for life.
AZ won’t permit “pet” tortoises to be released back into the wild and has strict laws about “gathering” your own.
Fun fact- tortoises can’t swim so keep them away from your pool.
Good fences make good neighbors.
You know, I have a tortise in my back yard I don’t like, in fact I hate it more than the Chihuahua….

“The research increasingly suggests that universal background checks aren’t enough to confront gun violence.”
I’m sure it does. I’d say that’s because *any* gun control measure is insufficient to not only reduce crime, but certainly to “confront” your ever-moving goal post of “gun violence”.
“when states enact comprehensive background checks alone, Webster explained, ‘we’ve not seen reductions in homicides and suicides follow.'”
Wow. What a motherfucking surprise that is.
“There’s also some evidence that Australia’s gun reforms in the 1990s, including a mandatory buyback of certain types of firearms, led to fewer gun deaths.’
…and there it is. That’s some serious control to delay blowing your load until almost the end of the article.

Fuck off. You cant have my guns. Try and take them. See what happens.
In my mind, imagining that situation, I can see myself tossing them a Magic Marker and telling them “Do me a favor and write out the contact details for your next of kin on your arm. That would give me more options than just leaving your corpse to rot in the street.”
After the first 20 or so background checks done on me, what do they think they’ll find? I should get an express pass at this point. I’ve been tempted to get a c&r, but my credit cards objected.
“One of the users of the COGAT Facebook page wrote in Arabic in response to the post by Sarhan ‘we want to live, Jews, give us work permit.'”

Ironically, that might be the best way to co-opt Arab Palestinians. If I were a voting Israeli, I’d vote for politicians who would be trying to integrate Palestinian Arabs into the economy with a path to citizenship. The Palestinian Arabs that I’ve known over the years had all been (relatively) successful in Israel and didn’t have the reflexive Jew-hatred of the people who were subsumed by the PA and never given a chance to make a life for themselves in a (relatively) free environment.
But admittedly, I’m an extremely naive person about this, living 10,000 miles away and not having set foot there for the past 50 years, and having no skin in the game, so could be completely wrong.
“[Chatman] said defending Fairfax is difficult because the idea of standing up for a man accused of sexual assault is not in her nature. But ‘even though I’m a very strong feminist,’ she said, ‘you can take advantage of MeToo and get back at someone you dated. I believe in believing women, but you can’t believe all women because some people lie.'”

Is there a genetic mutation that makes a person immune to irony?
you can take advantage of MeToo and get back at someone you dated. I believe in believing women, but you can’t believe all women because some people lie.
Progressives will never be pinned down by a principle. It is always about the principals involved.
Tell her Christine Blasey Ford was lying and watch the reaction.
“She has known him for 20 years and helped raise money for his campaign.”
I think I’ve gotten to the bottom of this. It’s also known as ‘It’s OK when we do it’.
Yes, and Anita Hill followed Clarence Thomas from job to job, even after the alleged harassment.
Wow. That is a big miss. You aren’t standing up for a man accused. You would be standing up for the rule of law, for due process. That is kind of important.
The mutation is spread by black flies in your chardonnay.
Speaking of dog-eat-dog wild west kkkapitalism
The e-commerce behemoth is reevaluating its decision to set up an office in New York that was to bring 25,000 jobs to Long Island City, according to a report Friday in The Washington Post. Amazon is reportedly considering the turnabout amid backlash from certain locals and lawmakers who haven’t been enthusiastic about the idea of one of the most valuable companies on earth — one which just raked in its highest-ever annual profit — receiving tax incentives for setting up shop on their turf.
———
While some of the criticism around Amazon’s headquarters search was about substance, such as what its arrival in a given city would mean for housing prices and homelessness, quite a lot of it was about tenor. It was off-putting to watch the whole thing framed as a contest, and to see finalist cities announced as if it were a beauty pageant. It seemed weird and self-important that many aspects of it were treated like some state secret. And then, ultimately, Amazon didn’t even do exactly what it had said it was setting out to do: Instead of rewarding a single metro area with 50,000 jobs, it split the project in two, with one campus in New York and another in Northern Virginia.
And now, the reported wavering could easily be seen as a strong-arm tactic to get New York to bend to its will. I can’t imagine that will go over well with anyone who already felt like Long Island City residents were a pawn in CEO Jeff Bezos’s game.
Laissez faire capitalism will be the death of us.
I hate everyone involved; Amazon for their rent-seeking and New York for their eagerness to carve up the goose laying golden eggs.
This.
WTF does this even mean? Oh noes, not jobs in the neighborhood on that empty piece of land over there!!
If you have so much vitriol and distaste for Amazon maybe you should be rejoicing that they will not be locating in your area.
If he relocates, he can plan to be punished by NY. You thought the settlement with your ex was high?
So, democrats keep saying they want people to have good, well paying jobs. But not, apparently, from icky companies like Amazon. I am also hearing lots of complaints about Amazon coming to Arlington because house prices will go up and traffic will get worse. Sigh.
If Amazon has received (or is to receive) tax incentives, it isn’t laissez faire. It is a fucking distortion New Yorkers get the privelage if paying for.
“Maduro doubles down. I’m predicting either lamppost or woodchipper.”
Well, Venezuelans are not beggars, he says. He just has something in common with all socialists. All of them seems to suffering from some degree of delusion, typically a massive case. I guess this can happen when your entire ideology is based on myths and lies.
They get the option of replacing a muderous socialist with one that hasn’t murdered. Yet. What a mess.
So, the young guy who’s their savior? Anyone trust that guy? No way, he’ll wind up being worse than Maduro, count on it.
I am proud to say my son has reached the age where he will admit that I was right.
What’s that Twain quote? Something like-
“When I was young, my old man was dumb as a fence post. It’s amazing how much smarter he’s gotten.”
Our parents always get revenge on us…when they have grandchildren.
Related: “The first half of our lives are ruined by our parents and the second half by our children.” Clarence Darrow
Reminds me of part of one of Bill Cosby’s old routines:
“After I did something stupid, my mother laid a curse on me. She said, “”I hope when you grow up, you have some children…and they act exactly like you do””
“And this curse…WORKS!”
Sadly, even my mother admits I did not act like my kids. What she does say is that my son is like my dad was when he was a kid (per grandma’s stories), and my daughter is very much like my brother.
Soooooooo I get to corral my dad and herd my brother.

Apparently, my Windows 10 computer has upgraded the USB drivers and rendered my old printer unusable.
I fucking hate computers.
More or less than Photoshop?
No, that’s me.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/theoatmeal-img/comics/printers/hate_machine.png
Just as bad as in 1995? Someone doesn’t remember dot matrix printers.
It’s a good point. For some reason, even printer software is godawful. I picked up an OfficeJet Pro when our Canon died, and honestly the best thing about it is that the software seems to have gone through user testing, quite possibly by someone who speaks English.
I was pleasantly surprised with the dirt-cheap wireless Canon I bought a couple months ago. It “just works”.
I bought a brother, because racism.
My old printer is almost a large plastic paperweight now because the Win 10 drivers barely work. The software just locks up all of the time and I have to reboot. Takes forever to print or scan anything. Time for a new printer.
I’m surprised anyone has an old printer. We end up getting a new one every ~5 years because buying a new set of ink cartridges ends up costing more than buying a new printer. Not very “green” of them.
That was the HP model for a long time. I remember in the early aughts buying a printer in Target for $30. The ink cartridges also cost $30. Oddly enough, it was a pretty decent printer.
Good gawd, do not buy new ink cartridges, ever. Buy the refilled ones on Amazon.
Cheap Chinese cartridges FTW!
I’ve been using ones like that since I bought my printer 5 years ago. They work and saves tons of money.
Ya know…I’m an intelligent guy. I really am. But every once in a while, for some unknown reason, I need my hand held and to be spoon fed information. Thanks Mo’ and Hyp for snapping me out of my name-brand-ink-cartridge-buying trance.
“By Unknown” LOL
I wonder if “Unknown” makes Canon-compatible cartridges.
Just ordered, Thanks Mojeaux
Welcome!
Just ordered 10 XL capacity cartridges for 2/3 the price of ONE HP cartridge. SMDH Thanks, Mo’!
Brother laserjets are like $80 and print about 6 billion pages before you replace the cartridge.
I will only use Okidata and HP printers any more. Driver support on all others is pathetic to nonexistent.
I prefer Okidata simply because they don’t try to install all sorts of printer monitoring crap on install and they have been mechanically reliable.
Wow, they’re still around?! Seems like they made every dot-matrix printer I used in the 80s and 90s.
Not as readily available, but they are around. I use them for all of our B&W laser printers at work.
“It doesn’t make sense that while [the Venezuelan people] migrate for hunger and need, supporters of the dictatorship enjoy these benefits and enter our country, using this card, to shop, among other things,” Christian Krüger Sarmiento, the director general of the migration agency (Colombia), said in a statement.
Fuckin’ A.
Last night while perusing YouTube for musical selections, I noticed something…odd. Since I mostly use YouTube for music videos, my “suggested videos” is always full of music videos of similar artists to the one I am listening to. Except last night I noticed there was always one link to the Colbert Show. Same link, every single video I watched. I finally clicked the … on the suggestion and “Not Interested” of some such option was listed. Did that, and then on the next video, a different link for a different late night show was in the list. Rinse/repeat and no more “ads that aren’t ads” showed up.
Anyway…not too surprising, but my main point was to let other YT users know that you can tell YT to bugger off with that nonsense.
Good morning, Old Man!
Thanks as always for the lynx, but thanks especially for today’s Old Guy Music!
I did not expect to hear that voice come out of an accountant. And the guitar is so cool – never seen one of those before.
10/10 will listen again.
Oh, and here’s one for you. Sort of a local gal.

Another good one.
What with all the rape and bigotry, college must be the worst, most dangerous place on Earth!
https://rudermanfoundation.org/podcast/episode-9-the-crisis-in-the-ivy-league-school/
If you visit a campus where mostly the soft sciences are studied, you’d be lucky to even see a male. So who’s doing the raping, the women? Or is it only in those bastions of STEM white toxic male privilege that the rape is going on? I thought no women were allowed in STEM studies? So how are they getting raped?
More dangerous than Somalia or prison. Time to shut them down.
It’s like those evil California Republicans; the fewer elections they win, the more powerful and nefarious they become!
Mostly women, eh? Are the campuses overrun by spiders?
They’re also all synched up. Once a month, the trash cans look like a crime scene clean up.
The way I’ve heard it presented is that, a lot of times, it’s non-students who see the campus as a target-rich environment. Usually no data to back that up in the claims I’ve heard…
It is an epidemic of demoralization…indistinguishable from mental illness.
What a big surprise.
Hockey update (mostly for Tundra). We won our second game and then our first bracket game this morning. This afternoon we take on Dallas and then the championship game is tomorrow morning. I have no goals so far but a few assists and today I went coast to coast around 3 guys for the first time. Goalie made the save though.
Great news, Kev! Are the boys staying relatively sober between games? I played in a gigantic tournament in Rochester where our goalie was so wasted we were on the verge of drawing straws to see which one of us defensemen was going to suit up in goal!
Needless to say, there was no hardware for us…
Good luck today. Beat Dallas because they are complete fuckheads who stole my favorite franchise.
You don’t like the SouthStars?
No.
There can be only one.
We might drink at night after games but if we were visibly drunk they would probably sit us for future games. We get that lecture every year. We represent the Blackhawks and any bad conduct will get you off the roster. They pay for our travel and equipment so they expect that from us.
One of our ex teammates plays for Dallas and she’s talking trash. We gotta beat these guys.
I would have crossed checked you in the head. No one is going coast to coast on my shift!

A chicky boom boom down.
Some mellow 80’s music.
Groovy. Interesting backstory on the guy, too.
It’s my go-to mellow out music. And yeah, he had some interesting follow ups, although I’m not real into what developed. The dynamics and melodies of the Gymnopedies and Gnossienes are amazing (to me, at least). Unfortunately, that’s pretty much what his successors threw out.
I’ve been listening to this 70s-riffic soul funk jazz fusion for my mellow times:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_6z5UsTtlg
If you didn’t click, my link was classical music from the 1880’s – I was being a dick. (Although not lying about it being mellow out music).
As a bassist, though, I’ll always enjoy a funky bass line with a groove.
I will only use Okidata and HP printers any more. Driver support on all others is pathetic to nonexistent.
The printer in question is my antique large format Epson, which I need to print large light blocking acetates to burn silkscreen images.
Hopefully, the next time I need it for that it will run off my equally antique Mac OS9 machine.

You smoked yourself retarded.

“the LGBTQ people, and people of color facing high barriers to entry.”
So all of those laws against cannabis, those only applied to LGBTQ and people of color? ‘Yeah, occifer, that is marijuana in the bag, but I’m a straight white guy, so you can just let me go, OK?! /derp
Aren’t “women in the industry” in it to make money? I have this crazy idea that if the ads aren’t effective, they’ll probably stop using them. And if they are effective, what’s the problem?
Using sex to sell shit? NO fucking way!

Amy has long had a rep for being a bad boss. She was expecting a tongue bath, not questions.
It bothers me that the people saying she’s awful all stay anonymous. She does have defenders that show their names. I also think the descriptions of the mistakes show the anonymous accusers were, at best, sloppy. She should have fired them. But throwing binders at people, unacceptable.
This HuufPo article may change your mind.

Panera Cares closes.
What possibly could have gone wrong?

“Where Panera Cares may have failed, the pay-what-you-can restaurant model has proven itself viable in some cases. Denver-based restaurant SAME, which helped inspire Panera Cares, opened in 2006 with the goal of allowing every customer to dine with dignity regardless of their ability to pay full price. The restaurant is continuing to fulfill that mandate today, proving that there is occasionally such a thing as a free lunch.”
I know there are some Denverinos around here. Anyone know about this place? How does it manage to function after 13 years?
How does it manage to function after 13 years?
They are a 501(c)(3), so I would say through donations.
It says Denver-based, which means the restaurant could be in some incredibly wealthy place like such as Aspen.
Because it’s not in: “Panera Cares operated five locations, including ones in Dearborn, Michigan; Portland, Oregon; Boston, and Chicago.” those locations? If they’d opened in, say, Provo, Utah, Laramie, Wyoming and Missoula, Montana, they might still be viable.
What a shocking result. Never would have seen that coming.

Kkkapitalism ruins everything, ch 6,904
Last month, JPMorgan Chase initiated the city permitting process to demolish its 52-story headquarters at 270 Park Avenue. The decision to raze 270 Park, which would be the tallest building in the world to be intentionally destroyed, sparked an outcry from architectural critics and preservationists.
Aside from tearing down a structure deemed to be a modernist landmark, some expressed concerns that such demolitions fly in the face of sustainability. But then again, the rezoning was meant to spur such drastic overhauls.
“One of the goals of the rezoning was to incentivize replacement of existing buildings by allowing larger ones to replace them, so that inherently runs counter to sustainability,” said Kyle Johnson, a board member of Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sights and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement (DOCOMOMO)’s NY/Tri-State division.
DOCOMOMO was among the groups who opposed the rezoning, citing sustainability as one of the reasons.
Of course, the headline is about a Trump building (not owned by Trump) targetted for the wrecking ball.
It’s unlikely there will be any tears shed for the Grand Hyatt, at least in its current form. Under Trump, who no longer owns the building, the Beaux-Arts-style building was wrapped in shiny bronze-colored glass and aluminum. In 2011, the Hyatt underwent an $130 million renovation, in part to rid itself of some of Trump’s tacky design choices.
Originally named The Commodore after “Commodore” Cornelius Vanderbilt, the hotel once boasted the “Most Beautiful Lobby in the World,” which was also said to be the largest room in the city. Although popular with tourists and business travelers for decades, the hotel went into decline in the 1970s.
But underneath its glassy Trump-styled exterior, the more refined brick façade of The Commodore remains hidden, for now, at least.
“I wish someone would strip off the glass slipcover over the historic building, rather than demolish the structure altogether,” Johnson said.
“Somebody oughtta” do that. What are you waiting for? Get your checkbook out.
The real reason for the uproar is buried halfway down on another page.
Sorry… it’s still hideous. And the “sustainability” horseshit isn’t fooling anyone.
Just getting head start on the Green New Deal’s demand that all structures in America be energy efficient.
Question for the Glibs:
There’s a position open locally with NAGR. I honestly don’t know very much about NAGR other than they shit on the NRA for being too accommodationist and the proggies view them as Hitler squared. So far so good right?
I’m doing a bit of research into NAGR now to decide if I want to apply for this job, but I figured this is a good place to ask if there are any substantial red flags I should be aware of.
Danke!
NAGR, please!
How to make a NAGRoni cocktail? Mix equal parts gin, vermouth, and campari. Rub the rim of the glass with Hoppes #9 and garnish with spent brass.
I’m doing a bit of research into NAGR now to decide if I want to apply for this job, but I figured this is a good place to ask if there are any substantial red flags I should be aware of.
NAGR?
Sounds racist.
That’s the National Institute for Gun Rights.
Looking for some advice. What would you say to someone using this as an example on why the free market needs to be heavily regulated?
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/02/09/world/americas/brazil-dam-collapse.html
Besides fuck off slaver
Thanks
Point out that it was regulated and still happened.
regulatory capture. The end.
The mining industry *is* heavily regulated, including in Brazil where this happened.
The problem there is that they were not using first world level engineering techniques and controls. And due to the amount of corruption that has been prevalent in Brazil over the last couple decades, it was very easy to get away with stuff like that. This is the 2nd time this has happened in the last several years. They constantly experience all sorts of infrastructure failures. What they need is more capitalism, not less. Socialism doesn’t give a fuck about standards, safety, or anything like that. Just look at China for more example.
Thanks guys.
Yep. Worst dam disaster in history, by far, happened in commie China in the 70’s.
The one is MG that we are talking about was pretty horrific. Wife and I were watching the Brazil news right after it happened. The area right down stream, where there used to be a town, looked like the Grand Canyon of mud. That’s all I could think of. It looked worse than the Mount St. Helen’s eruption. They may as well have nuked it, there was nothing left except a canyon of mud.

“Even gay dudes love boobs.”
Is that true?
Ffs. Pocahontas is in Lawrence MA telling the virtuous story of how women in the textile mills organized 115 years ago and made life better for everyone.
Those mills are long closed and all our textiles come from Asia now because unions made it too expensive to produce them here.
Irony lost on everyone present.
Now she’s calling for class warfare.
Grandma & Grandpa Penguin worked in mills like that, but non-union. They managed to remain open until the early 70’s.
Huh. I’m shocked. Shocked, I tells ya.
For some reason, when Trump tried to bring mfg jobs back to Murica, it was bad. But when a leftist commie wants to do it, it’s good. Go figure. It’s almost like they have no principles.
I have a better chance of winning than she does.
The mining towns here look like same as they do in PA. Hard to understand. Seems like putting CAFE rules on cars and requiring weight reductions to meet said rules was an unintended consequent. Naw, people just like to save money driving small cars instead of those monsters we enjoyed in the old days. You can have my F150 when …..they outlaw pickups, only outlaws….
Surprise
The World Health Organization has suggested that cannabis should be downgraded, or “rescheduled,” given the mounting evidence showing that the drug could prove beneficial in treating a number of health problems.
This marks a significant change in WHO’s position, which for the last 60 years has said that cannabis should not be used in medicine, according to an article in the BMJ.
The WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence has recommended that cannabis resin and other marijuana products should be downgraded from a schedule IV to a schedule I drug under international law.
Schedule IV is the strictest category outlined in the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs Treaty, meaning that cannabis is currently treated in the same way as heroin, severely restricting scientists who want to investigate the plant in the search for potential therapies.
Cue drug warrior outrage.
“mounting evidence” you mean like the mounting evidence that if you jump off Half Some at Yosemite, you’ll die? That kind of evidence?
It’s not at all harmful to a person if you throw them in a rape cage for possessing some plant material, or if the cops break down their door in the middle of the night and shoot them dead.
It took 60 years to figure this out?
It’s useful to be reminded that drug war stupidity isn’t confined to the US.
I think though, that it might be relevant to say that the US is responsible for exporting it to the rest of the world. I could be wrong, but it seems that way.
Yeah, some of it, to be sure.
A lot of countries have carried it further than us, though – and will continue to regardless of what we do in our own borders.
Aspiring socialists might want to pay attention to China. Drugs will get you re-education camp there. The fact that they think once their glorious revolution is ushered in, that they get to keep their weed and whatever, is extremely naive.
No, it should not be on any schedule. All that will mean is that you will need to get it from a doctor and that will effectively end recreational weed, because it will be classified as a medicine. It’s only OK to use medicine when it’s supplied by a pharm company sanctioned by the FDA and prescribed by one of their sales people, AKA medical doctors.
We don’t live in the best possible timeline, we live in what, to people in other timelines, is the most amusing one.
We’re still just hairless monkeys. We’re hairless monkeys will cellular communication devices, driving around in 6000 lb steel death machines. But make no mistake, we’re still just as primitive as save chimpanzees, especially in regards to how we treat our fellow monkeys.
This is no shit.
Penaltax as new swing vote?
No one could have ever predicted that.
That’s why replacing with Bader-Ginsburg with someone who is more textualist/originalist is so important.
Roberts’ weakness has been known since he actually changed his vote to overturn ObamaCare. Which is highly, highly unusual, since after they vote the assignments are made to write the opinions; changing your vote fucks up the assignments, and I believe you can see in the dissent that it was originally the majority opinion.
With Roberts a fairly reliable “living Constitution” vote, a solid majority of textualists/originalists is needed to marginalize the living Constitution crew.
Matt Whitaker Headed To Trump Hotel After Hearing And People Are Talking
Twitter sleuths are on the case. What’s funny is that these are probably the same people who think Alex Jones presents a danger to society.
Given that it’s one of just a few places for Trump appointees to dine without being harassed or hounded, why would this be surprising?
From the sidebar in the ‘gays are controlling the world’ story: https://nypost.com/2019/02/08/woman-eaten-alive-by-pigs-after-collapsing/
My grandfather told me that it was not uncommon when he was young for people to die in the woods and never be found. They would fall off of a horse, drown or step in a hole or injure themselves working and pigs would eat them. We still had open range in Louisiana up to the end of the century. He said “We would just find their shoes. That’s how we would know what happened.”
As a kid the idea that they would only find their shoes really creeped me out.
