I will confess to a guilty pleasure: since moving west, SP and I have been on an old Western kick. And our current binge is old Hopalong Cassidy TV shows, mostly condensed versions of the 66 Hopalong Cassidy movies. In its day, these shows were insanely popular, the first major TV westerns, with every red-blooded American kid watching the show weekly, wanting Hoppy merchandise, and cajoling parents into buying stuff from the show’s sponsors. There’s a lot of interesting backstory as well, which I may expand into a full post. Teaser: entrepreneurship, heavy drinking, redemption, and brilliant marketing. At the end of every show, Hoppy’s portrayer, William Boyd, would deliver a message to the kids, usually along the lines of, “Hello, Little Pardners! Make sure you do your homework every day!” or “Your parents love you and care about you. Make sure you listen to everything they say and do your chores with a smile!” But of all of the end-of-show messages, this one is for sure our favorite:
Birthdays today are particularly auspicious and numerous, but I must single out libertarian theorist Murray Rothbard, brilliant author and social critic Tom Wolfe, and the immortal Lou Reed, who will always be with us.
On to the news!
Orange Man is doomed! America yawns.
The Pride of Minnesota continues to delight everyone.
Jews, that’s why they’re lame.
I fucking hate Twitter, but every once in a while, there’s a gem.
He really should have listened to Hoppy.
We really did get out just in time. Holy shit, this is going to be a spectacular crash and burn.
This sort of snark will not stop the presidential crusade of Jay Inslee. Whoever the fuck he is.
There’s no shortage of non-entities crowding the Team Blue field for 2020. Too bad that this threatens to overshadow the absolute comedy of Warren and Sanders. That said, if Team Blue somehow gets sensible and nominates the staunch anti-interventionist Gabbard, and Team L fails to nominate the amazingly delightful McAfee, I may vote Blue for the first time.
As someone who has always fucking hated malls, this gives me a frisson of Schadenfreude.
Old Guy Music time. And for whatever reason, I’ve been on a Sonny Terry/Brownie McGhee kick lately. And here’s a classic, introduced by the amazingly white and overly garrulous Pete Seeger.
A new Hill-HarrisX survey, released on Friday, found that 39 percent of registered had not yet formed an opinion on Cohen’s testimony.
I agree with whatever Joy Behar has to say on the subject.
In one sense I get Omar’s confusion. Why is it okay to insist that NRA members have blood on their hands but that Pro-Israel lobbying doesn’t demand loyalty. She is just the logical extension of leftist rhetoric.
Don’t know if the same guy did the movie versions but the radio California Carson is my favorite old coot sidekick.
Also nice Old Guy Music this week.
Would you like to see my scar?
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee launched a 2020 run for president Friday making a bet untested in American politics: that a single-issue platform of fighting climate change can win.
He kicked off his campaign with a launch video in which he warned, in emotional terms, that the effects of the climate “crisis” are “being felt everywhere,” as video footage flashed of blazing wildfires and waste-deep floods. He also promised “millions of good paying jobs” in a clean energy economy.
Going straight for the 16 year old vote. Good thinking.
When the GND inevitably destroys the economy: hey I promised millions of good paying job, not millions more.
Standing in bull shit doesn’t count as waste-deep.
I’ve got 6′ snow banks in my neighborhood that are going to make me vote for anyone who promises to bring on Global Warming.
Why don’t we create the Carbon Party?
Plank 1: No more catalytic converters
Plank 2: Start burning leaves in your yard again
*pulls lever*
Wood burners of Minnesota, Unite!
Plank 2: Start burning
leavestires in your yard againWhy mess around? If you’re going to fuck Gaia, at least make it a hate-fuck.
“They kill people”
What? Well, I never…
*recoils in terror*
Cohen is a pathological liar, but we should take him at his word? WTF?
Scumbag Omar got enough votes to take office? WTF?
Indiana requires citizens to have a handgun license? WTF?
Rising socialism in America? WTF?
The grifters are still pushing the global warming scam? WFT?
Looks like team blue has gone off of the rails all the way to Crazytown. WTF?
I was only halfway through the links and I already wanted to start drinking.
Good morning all.
Hell, I’ll crack one if you will.
“Indiana requires citizens to have a handgun license? WTF?”
Only because everyone in Indiana is running guns for the rest of the country. Clearly they need the license to show it’s for their personal use.
If I remember right, Omar was elected in the same district as Keith Ellison was. Being anti-Semitic may not be much of a hindrance in that district.
It doesn’t help when the sister fuckers in WV do their best to turn her into a martyr.
Even just among Democrats, climate change is not necessarily a dominant issue.
I’ll bite. What is the dominant issue among Democrats?
Maintaining power
Maintainingpower.Who’s going in the ditches first?
This is what the identity Olympics is all about.
Funny, it’s gonna be transgender men v. women in that Olympics, too!
I had a good old time telling my co workers about that today. Can’t wait for the Tokyo Olympics now. I was just going to leave town for a couple weeks, but no way I’m missing this shit show.
I do feel bad for the girls who have practiced their whole lives for this. But will provide them with another good reason to resent their parents.
That does suck for those girls, however that transexual men competing as women is not going to fly in East Asia. Sure, they tolerate trannies in most countries, but my guess is they will be horrified once the images of some giant winning all these races pops up on their TVs.
I like to call it the “Victim Olympics.” There are few things more interesting and appalling than watching two victims try to out victim one another.
Envy.
Socialism.
Hate.
Hatred of normies. And if that means self-hatred for many of them, well, so be it.
I doubt you’d vote for Gabbard when you consider the balance of her positions. Yes, it is nice to have one anti-interventionist in the field and the Republicans had Paul last time around. See how fucking popular that is? Americans just want to stick their noses in other people’s business, domestically and abroad.
Well, if I have a choice between someone who will actually act on my number one issue, but be an idiot on everything else, and someone who will be an idiot on every issue, I’ll go with the former.
Unless the LP runs McAfee.
My point is there is no way she wins the nomination, even though most of her positions are fairly standard issue progressive. Her redeeming feature (in your and my opinion) will not be shared by the majority of Americans, let alone a plurality/majority of Democrats. I’m pretty fucking disgusted with my fine fellow citizens about that too.
Plus she is from Hawaii and thus will bring no other states electoral votes with her. I don’t see her even getting a VP nod because of that.
As a Hindu she brings some “Xtian bad” votes in, but she and her family are widely known to not be a gay lifestyle “enthusiasts. I am not saying she would do anything to restrict gay rights, but she won’t be on the forefront of expansion of them.
She’ll be at the kid table until she runs out of money and decides to “concentrate of serving her constituents”.
McAfee posts some very loony shit on twitter. I mean like drunken woe-is-me type livestreams. It’s extremely cringe-y and sad. Then there’s the terrible attempts at memes and the frequent pushing of his latest cryptocurrency scam. I really don’t think anyone should be hoping that man gets a bigger platform for his lunacy. But… to each their own.
“That said, if Team Blue somehow gets sensible and nominates the staunch anti-interventionist Gabbard, and Team L fails to nominate the amazingly delightful McAfee, I may vote Blue for the first time.”
McAfee has a good chance, Gabbard had already been targeted for termination.
It looks like team blue is about to have a full-on party purge. They are demanding absolute lock-step loyalty from their members.
Fucking pinkos, always and everywhere the same.
McAfee will legalize cocaine and whale-fucking, so I’m in.
Yes, I will finally be able to marry my coke head gay sperm whale soul mate.
A sing along to go with the cowboy movies. Hoppy, Gene, Roy and I caught a lot of outlaws together. I’ll never forgive Roy though, for stealing Dale.

Thanks
If you dig good music…this is a digitized 78rpm collection
Thanks Slammer, a real trip down Memory Lane. Already have my afternoon planned.
I have been watching some teevee news, lately. The networks are really beating Public Enemy Number One over the head with that kid who got sent to the camps in Norkistan. He’s cozying up to an authoritarian monster who personally murdered some poor little American kid! Also, Poooootun!
You now, just like they did when the Ascended One went to Havana to kiss Castro’s desiccated nutsack.
Listen. We had a plan. Continue fucking with the nuclear armed dictator until some really bad stuff happened. Then we get war. How dare Orange Man go off script.
But Obama had to do it. With the Cuban Missile crisis, we learned we needed to have a relationship with Cuba.
They are desperate for him to not get credit for any kind of victory.
Why was that “kid” in North Korea? Was he a spy?
That did fall off the news radar rather quickly, didn’t it.
Missionary.
What was I just saying about Americans that want to stick their noses where they don’t belong?
They’re doing missionary wrong?
“with Democrats now having stronger control of the legislature. He introduced a plan in December for his state to use 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2045”
I wonder if this passed if residents could sue for a clear taking in their standard of living
So he’s pro fission, good for him.
Do any of these carbon free plans have any details in them? How exactly do they plan to get energy? Solar panels – a joke. Wind – a joke.
I suspect these millions of jobs they say they will provide are grubbing for roots with a sharp stick.
Ayn Rand knew what she was talking about. I will always remember the scene where Dagny goes to the ruins of Galt’s former employer and she sees a nearly emaciated man struggling to plow a small patch of dirt with a hand tool of some sort.
It’s funny how so many people make fun of Rand and call her a terrible writer. Yet, just looking at her villains alone proves how realistic and prescient her writing was.
You can be precient, a keen observer of human nature, And a terrible writer. These are in no way mutually exclusive.
“What are you doing with that gun Lucky?”
*fires shot taking off half of an ear, surrenders nickname “Lucky”*
I’ll bite. What is the dominant issue among Democrats?
Moral preening. And total control of everything.
More proof that America is ruled by those CEOs

I see a lot of doctors in there. That isnt good. Average docs really dont make as much as most people think they do.
And they’d make even less if the government got out of health.
And the list is skewed by stats. Don’t limit it “at least 1,000” and the highest will be some public-sector worker that puts in 500 hours of overtime every week, in every state.
I’ll have to find the map, but in most states the highest paid state employee is the football coach of the state University.
I’m calling bullshit on anesthesiologists being the highest paying job with at least 1,000 people in so many states.
The median anesthesiologist’s total cash comp nationwide is $446K, with practically none making more than $600K (trust me, I’ve got good data on this). That’s good money, but they don’t have the opportunities that other specialists do to supplement their income in various ways. The number they show for AZ for anesthesiologists ($267K) is laughably low, even for straight salary with no bonuses, benefits or any other kind of supplemental income. $267K is what a internist or hard-working primary care doc with a good practice can take home in total comp. There is something seriously wrong with their data or their methodology.
That said, I don’t doubt that, as a profession, doctors are probably the highest paid group in many if not all states.
Wow, the woman on that link didn’t look like Hoppy, she looked like Julia-Lewis Dreyfus if JFD decided t take up meth 5 years ago.
Just sayin’
Ah, fuck , I was thinking of Poppy.
I blame everyone else other than me for this fuck up.
Je suis Poppy.
Aún no tienes la culpa. Te culpo.
Está bien, voy a vomitar ahora.
Ah fuck – do you speak Spanish, Raphael? Because I’m gonna have to re-phrase my pointless and unfair insults if not.
You’re still to blame.
Re San Francisco socialists. I think the various immunities granted to officials had helped the rise of socialism. If every city council was personally liable for the ATMS illeagal laws they passed you’d see more sanity.
AlmightyJB – you posted about Combat Obscura yesterday. Caught it this past VAFF (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIqc0-3Tf-o).
Has a few interesting scenes, but as a quality documentary, The Hornet’s Nest is a much better piece. Obviously different methods, formats, etc – https://www.amazon.com/Hornets-Nest-Mike-Boettcher/dp/B071GMV237/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=into+the+hornets+nest&qid=1551534337&s=gateway&sr=8-1
Did watch Restrepo and Korengal pretty recently too, those are both worth watching as well.
Thanks LT! I appreciate the insight. I’ll check those out. We see a lot of this info from a 10k foot view (often literally). It’s interesting to see it from on the ground.
I want to watch Restrepo and Korengal, but I can only find Korengal on a streaming service. How much does it matter if you haven’t seen Restrepo?
Both are really good. I think you can watch them in either order. To see how little the military knew about how to fight the current style of warfare watch “Gunners Palace”. GP is a documentary of the war in Iraq in 2003 from the perspective of an FA unit in Baghdad. Some of what I saw in GP mirrors the experiences of my unit. Watching it and then the docs from later in the wars is interesting.
Excellant. Thanks!
Speaking of the teevee news- Yesterday, they interviewed some LGBTQRWXYZ teacher in Oakland who is on strike and whining about how she is forced to live in a (brand new Mercedes? high top cargo) van. It’s pretty well converted to an RV; hardly the lap of luxury, but a hell of a lot better than a blue tarp on the sidewalk. Waah waah waah, I and my wife(!) can’t afford a place to live on my niggardly $60,000/yr paycheck. Gimme mo munny!
That’s more than the median household income. Literally half the country makes do with less (total, not just one paycheck). Fuck you teacher hey trails. I had a teacher friend who bitched about this all the time. Look dude, you choose to be a teacher, and you knew what they were paid.
LEARN TO COMMUTE
Go teach in Omaha instead.
There are clear reasons for housing being unaffordable in these areas. None of them are due to developers not being willing to make more low cost housing.
There was a huge boom in housing in the US south and South West in the 90’s and 2000’s. The needs were met and if you were willing to relocate you could find work and a place to live that was affordable. If you were in the trades you could make a mint if you spent your summers in Greenville, research Triangle, or Charlotte making houses.
There is a obvious reason that housing is too expensive. Regulation, NIMBY, and other factors drive housing costs in places like SF, Portland, and Seattle. The Glibs in Japan, Korea, and other densely populated locations have seen the 20-30 story high rises that dot the skyline.
There are solutions, but the cities and people living in them don’t seem to have will to do it.
My view, my parking, my property values, my schools – take your pick. Maybe some day we’ll have Paris-style banlieues full of towers but much further out where there’s still empty land.
I remember ye olde 2016 when many were making fun of the Republicans for having so many nominees, can’t wait to see the circus clown car the Dem Primaries for 2020 will eventually become.
Just remember, they are still Republicans. My lastest meme creation. I’m open to adjustments, but I liked it.
https://i.imgflip.com/2v174c.jpg
True that, sadly enough. I like that meme myself. The spirit of molon labe lives on and hope it keeps on.
Nice.
Yeah I don’t get why that was so funny. What was scary was the way the Democrats only had two options.
Two?
They only had one, the other guy was just for show.
Speaking of which I keep hearing noises about her possibly running again. That will be priceless.
She’d have to be so doped up that even I would cringe at the spectacle.
Yeah, and at the same time cant look away.
I always make time to look away when it’s HRC
Tomorrow’s Doonesbury applauds “she persisted.”
They had 3 for a very short while. Who was that other guy again…IIRC, he was actual sane and (probably) not a crook.
James Webb. He was a Dem I could have considered. He was very much anti-interventionist and actually good on the 2A.
It already is.
I didn’t see that but I remember Jeanne Garafolo in 2004 celebrating the Dems for having mutiple candidates while the Republicans only had Bush.
Whatever helps them is good. Whatever hurts them is bad.
In 2008 we need a young outsider, not an old warhorse. Then in 2016 we needed the savvy Washington insider, not the crazy outsider who’d never had a political position.
When they hold the White House, the Presidency is the living embodiment of America. When they hold the Congress, it’s the People’s House, the voice of our nation.
This should probably disqualify you from getting in to either school.

Sounds like the state department is just trying to keep everyone else away for their vacation.
Jet-ski operators have been known to commit sexual assaults against tourists.
Talk about multi tasking.
Just whales fucking.
SEA SMITH NO NEED JET SKI!
They are just now finding out about that?
My son took his honeymoon to Mexico and then a vacation to the bahamas a couple of years later. I warned him both times. At both locations they were told not to leave the resort by the staff. The resorts were walled and one of them, I dont remember which, had machine-gun towers on the walls.
I asked him recently about that and he said he will never leave the country again.
Bahamas doesn’t equal the rest of the world. You gotta disabuse him of that nonsense.
Sadly I have never travelled to many places in what is considered the developed world. Backwater shitholes? I have seen plenty of them. I have no plans to leave the country either, but yeah, he should see some not shithole places.
Japan has turned from an outward looking country when I arrived first came here in 95 and now the kids I talk to are, “I’ve seen foreign countries on YouTube. That’s enough. No thanks. Looks dangerous.” It’s amazing that any human would think that the internet is some kind of replacement for actually visiting a place. But, here we are.
The internet has become a replacement for lots of things.
I can watch big game hunting and not get tick/redbug infested or mosquito bitten and after it is over I dont have to get the smell of guts on me.
I love the internet.
It is highly dependent on where in those countries you go. Some just have hotspots or areas that are dangerous. Aside from crime ridden areas countries to avoid are ones whose governments are unfriendly to the west.
*At one time the most dangerous city in the world for crime was Aukland, NZ. In certain parts of the city getting mugged in broad daylight was a certainty for tourists. Any other part of the country and you were fine. I always thought that was odd.
I’ve been to many and I just learned to be aware and don’t show any displays of wealth. Wouldn’t take my family to half the places I’ve been to, but who want to go to Chicago anyways?
Yeah I spent 2 years in Argentina and Uruguay. Never felt more danger than in any big city in the US.
On a mission?
Yeah.
Ran into you guys many, many times in many places. We always give each other the American-dude-nod.
Nice I met only a handful of Americans will I was there. One was a couple the last two weeks I was there. She didn’t speak any Spanish, and was visibly shocked when we started speaking perfect English. I guess she didn’t surmise the two white Mormon boys were American.
I *am* a little surprised to hear this about the Bahamas. Not that I pay the slightest attention to the Bahamas other that hearing how many wealthy tennis pros live/train there. I just thought it was a sleepy tourist country & isn’t it a tax shelter too?
He should come to Romania. It is quite safe
Inviting people over is a vampire workaround the fact that they can’t go anywhere they aren’t invited.
I spent over a month in the Bahamas. It didn’t seem dangerous at all then.
It’s “Tow the Lion”
They worry that the sweeping proposals and hardball tactics of liberal firebrands could alienate centrist voters in the 2020 election, even as they hold out hope that Democratic primary voters, focused on defeating President Trump, will check the party’s move to the left.
The moderates’ concerns came to a head this week when one of the newest Democratic stars appeared to threaten her colleagues if they did not toe the liberal line, raising the specter of a cleave in the party between moderates and purists similar to a long-standing divide in the Republican Party.
At a closed-door meeting of House Democrats on Thursday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said some of her colleagues could find themselves “on a list” of primary election targets, after they voted for a Republican amendment requiring that undocumented immigrants who try to buy guns be reported to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to people in the room who were not authorized to comment publicly.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), a co-chairman of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, said he has confronted party leaders about such threats, which have also come from the Justice Democrats, a liberal group that backed Ocasio-Cortez’s primary campaign.
What? You created a monster, set it loose in the countryside, and now it won’t obey your commands?
That’s just awful.
In two years it would be delicious if AOC were the one primaried. Let’s see how popular she is when more than 12% of her district’s voters are interested in voting in the primary.
She has a gift for making enemies, it seems. Safe districts like hers aren’t for sending people who divide the party, they are for sending people who will fall in line like good soldiers until they get seniority. If she doesn’t smarten up pretty quick, I think she could have a real problem. NY is a machine; she got lucky once, but I wouldn’t count on her surviving being targeted by the machine. Especially since she stupidly managed to get the Amazon debacle hung around her neck.
Especially since she stupidly managed to get the Amazon debacle hung around her neck.
Are you kidding, she fought to have that Albatross tied around her neck and she won’t let anyone edge in on it.
Um – isn’t it Saturday morning?
No.
I blame the alcohol.
Look we’ve all had our differences about why Central Time is the only real time. The enlightened have let weirdos from other time zones prattle on about why their time is the best. We didn’t think there was any real harm. But Sunday morning? Maybe it is time to crack down on you time heretics.
John Anzalone, an Alabama-based Democratic pollster, said the perception that the party’s primary voters are enthusiastically liberal is not based on data.
“There is, without a doubt, a myth that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez somehow represents the narrative of Democratic primary voters in the country,” Anzalone said. “Almost half of them identify themselves as moderates or conservative.”
Pffft. What the fuck do they know about the fierce urgency of now?
We’ll all be dead in six years if we don’t put that five year plan into action.
Almost half of them identify themselves as moderates or conservative.
In today’s episode of Words, What Do They Mean? . . .
Sunday
This is what happens when I do links early in the morning when there’s no-one around to proofread.
Isn’t calling Saturday Sunday one if those was around not working on the Sabbath?
I’m the opposite of shomer shabbos.
You got me there I had to Wikipedia.
“In addition, a variety of positive Sabbath commandments are expected to be fulfilled, such as Sabbath meals, rituals, prayers, kindness, benignity, rest and—for married couples—sexual intercourse on Friday night.[1]”
A commandment everyone can get behind.
That’s my excuse for fucking up the post title.
Selfie slootz.

21 and 24. And 4 for the big booty.
The tight shirt on 29. Mmmm.
I have a nice piece of salmon marinating in a mix of garlic ginger soy sauce and sesame oil. Soon I will crank up the Anova. I am hungry.
Hope it is good cause it was twice the price of usual salmon because it was sashimi cut whatever that is. I only noticed the price at checkout.
I had really good salmon Wednesday night. Didn’t marinate it but that sounds good.
Now you are making me hungry.

That’s the first thing I thought as well.
Ilhan is trouble. No one should be surprised of her shitty left-wing views. Pelosi putting her in there was a stupid move.
Stupid people.
Chicago. Ouch.
Well the fellows following existential commie comics are very pro cause she a real leftist and anti-interventionist….
Illustration #5872 of ‘Every communist thinks after the glorious revolution they will be the one carrying the clipboard’.
What did team blue leadership think was going to happen if they imported zillions of commie votes and instituted commie policies? Did they think they would still be in power? The pinkos are about to be purged from the party by the true reds.
Ilhan Omar is just fine now that the rubes of WV put her on a poster with the 9/11 attacks. Now she can really play the victim card up.
“Stop talking about me hating on (((them)))! Let’t talk about how dumb people are clearly out to get me.”
I linked to the WV story above.
Like i said above, I don’t get how the Left can get upset about her comments but also cheer when anti-gunners say everyone who supports the NRA has blood on their hands.
I’m with you leon. But I’m a simple kid off the prairie.
Ilhan is trouble.
Probably not. Remember, her election is local.
So was Obama’s first one.
I think there might have been a time when I might have considered voting for a Democrat if they happened to be the lesser evil. I’m not convinced Tulsi would be that. I think she’s a typical polititian who’s willing to change positions when politically convenient. I also think her current positions on a number of important issues are unacceptable. But even if she were the lesser of two evils, I can’t vote Dem given the racist, socialist, authoritarian direction that party is racing towards. Look at the Chicago link. We’ll steal and give you other people’s wealth if you in turn give us power to control every aspect of your life. It’s scary how many democrats are not just willing but are enthusiastic about making that bargain. I won’t vote for Trump, but I will most definately not vote democrat either. I’m not voting to enslave myself or others.
DeBlasio scoffs at Chicago. Not ready for prime time. We think in billions in Ne York.
I’m not convinced Tulsi would be that.
I’m convinced she wouldn’t be that. She’s on board with the Green New Deal. Total boner-killer. I don’t care how good you are on other issues, supporting an insane proposal that could only lead to the utter destruction of our current economy, and thus the world economy, and lead to complete social collapse is just bad. There’s just no coming back from that.

Much brave. So courage.

The left’s hate cult. It keeps growing. Can you imagine them with a super majority right now?
Yes – California.
And how long until CA implodes with all the taxpayer goodies being given out, increased regulations, corruption, etc.?
It’s beautiful where I live in southern CA, and I do love my job. But, it’s going to be hard staying here until my wife retires (she makes more and has a better retirement package).
Fuck, I sound like a broken record.
It seems the only hate crimes anymore, real or faked, are committed by the left. Huh. Imagine that.
Holy shit, that’s the exact grocery store Mrs. A and I have been using on my Joisey gig.

I own 4 different style MAGA hats.
I have one currently being delivered that’s an exact replica of the MAGA, but says Made You Look
Indiana man. No holster appendix carry. Hi-Point. He shouldn’t have a penis.
“Sunday Morning…”
Um….
Technically it is as of 2 minutes ago.
Swiss would narrow his gaze but you probably can’t tell the difference.
Maybe somebody missed their turn and OMWC had to post tomorrow’s links today. Or maybe it was the move messing with his mojo (what’s the Hebrew word for mojo). Or maybe he’s just old and senile. Which is it SP?
From the mom thread last night:
National socialism (fascism) is a different brand of authoritarianism than international socialism (democratic socialism, socialism, communism, and other variants), but they all have the same root. I could draw a Venn diagram to clear things up if needed.
Per Popper, that root is Hegel.
Marx.
Hegel is a century earlier. Marx comes from Hegel.
That Hegel came before Marx does not mean Marx came from Hegel, any more than de Tocqueville did. Although both were clearly influenced by him. So were the existentialists, psychoanalysts, phenomenologists, etc. and arguably every other Western philosopher since Hegel. If “Marx comes from Hegel” then why weren’t Freud and Nietzsche communists? While Hegel was a statist, he was not a socialist. He was also very Christian, and believed freedom and self-determination were essential to ethics.
I didn’t write Open Society and it’s Enemies Volume 2.
They are all just different flavors of shit. The outcome of all of them are the same: you end up eating shit.
And waiting in line to get it.
The Nazi higher-ups were explicit about their Marxism. This is a matter of historical record.
They’re just a flavor of socialism.
Indeed. I just listened to this podcast, where both Carlin and Danielle Bolelli complain about how recently people are trying to call Nazis socialists and part of the left when for decades most people understood and agreed it’s an extreme right wing ideology.
https://dchhaddendum.libsyn.com/ep7-hardcore-history-on-fire
I can agree with their argument that Hitler was very clear in Mein Kampf about his hatred of the left. Still, I think we need to consider what “left” he was talking about. The only right wing thing I can find about Hitler and Nazis is the nationalist bent, and the desire to conserve a tradition of “Deutschland Uber Alles.” Besides, racism isn’t right wing or left wing.
Asses were covered. Or were they?
The Washington Post issued an editor’s note Friday over its early coverage of a viral exchange between a student from the Covington Catholic High School and a Native American veteran.
The paper said subsequent evidence, including reporting, unsurfaced video and a student’s statement clarifies the interaction and either contradicts or fails to confirm The Posts initial stories.
“Subsequent reporting, a student’s statement and additional video allow for a more complete assessment of what occurred, either contradicting or failing to confirm accounts provided in that story — including that Native American activist Nathan Phillips was prevented by one student from moving on, that his group had been taunted by the students in the lead-up to the encounter, and that the students were trying to instigate a conflict,” The Post said.
Weak.
I hope that was accompanied by a big fat settlement check. If not, let the jury sort it out.
Editors Note:
The story we ran appears to have no basis in reality.
And you know what? Defamation law doesn’t care about subsequent retractions or clarifications. The original defamation stands on its own (which I think is as it should be, since it is what most people will see and remember).
The judge/jury may take subsequent retractions or clarifications into account when calculating damages, but the later and weaker it is (and this is some weak, late shit), the less it will help.
I think these cases will come down to whether the defamatory bits were presents as fact or opinion.
In my non-lawyer mind, it seems that if anything, a retraction helps the claimant (right word?). It’s basically an admission of guilt, right?
This is getting out of my wheelhouse, but I think that for a lot of torts, anything the defendant does to remedy the alleged “problem” is inadmissable as an admission there was a problem. For example, if you get sued because somebody fell down and claims you need a handrail, subsequently installing a handrail doesn’t mean you were negligent in not having one before.
Maybe. I’m going back thirty years to law school for this. I’m a boardroom lawyer, not a courtroom lawyer.
Ahh, I see. Thanks for the clarification on that.
“Get people excited about climate change”
Go with: “warmer temperatures will lengthen bikini season!”
That’d get me excited. I’d do my part by going out and burning some tires.
It is funny we keep hearing about global warming and all of it’s attendant disasters yet the numbers simply dont bear any of it out. Statistically there is no warming, no super storms, no sea level rise, no plagues of locusts, etc.
they are literally making this shit up out of thin air.
Here’s my idea: brand climate change as “Climate Progress.” Those who want to prevent this progress are “Climate reactionaries.”
Shhhhhhhhhhh
Counter point: Won’t you think of the beavers?
I do. All of the time in fact.
I was at a concert last night so it appears I missed a great discussion on the metric system and how many hands tall everyone is.
The death of malls means the death of many time-honored traditions:
1) Salivating over the Cinnabon smell.
2) Furtively gawking at high school girls’ asses.
3) Free samples of “bourbon chicken”.
4) Running up the down escalator.
5) Getting lost in Dillards while trying to find the mall entrance.
I haz sadz.
6) After-hours snu-snu in the mattress shop before running from killer robots.
Sherman Oaks Galleria. Also in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Drastically altered, but still sorta there.
Hot Sam’s
I once did a title search on our local mall. The damned thing sold every four or five years and hadn’t made money since the late 1970’s.
I cant believe there are any left now.
Without zoning laws some of those malls would have little (or large) warehouse, manufacturing or residential uses. But noooooooooooo
Was that just last week?
You can’t gawk furtively. The two are contrary.
Fuck off, slaver
A proven technique in peace talks, labor disputes and many other types of difficult negotiations is to begin by finding some type of common ground upon which antagonistic parties can agree. But in today’s political climate, everything seems difficult.
So why not seek the common ground of helping our young people benefit from the experience of service — service of a kind that changes almost everyone who does it for the better.
Presidential, congressional, state and local officials should endorse the idea of at least a year of national service, not as a legal obligation, but as an increasingly widespread cultural, political and moral expectation for all able, young Americans.
We won’t force you into “serving” your country. Not yet, anyway.
Come on, America. Be a part of our communitarian wet dream. Arbeit macht frei.
service of a kind that changes almost everyone who does it for the better.
I mean look at how much it helped all those conscripts in the 60’s and 70’s
https://voxeu.org/article/impact-mandatory-military-conscription-crime-and-labour-market
When do young ladies start pinning a white feather onto the lapel of any man who hasn’t “volunteered” to spend a year putting on a puppet show for inner city youth extolling the virtues of diversity and fully accepting trans people?
Women have no power over Men
Hitler Youth started out as a voluntary group too. But once a majority is convinced to join anything, then look out.
Sounds legit. We could have them all wear matching clothes with some kind of nifty arm band maybe.
“It’s hard to find common ground. So you should believe what I already believe, so that we have common ground. Get on that or you’re an obstructionist asshole.”
Just asking – what position, besides non-interventionism, does Tulsi Gabbard hold that is non-insane, if any? I seriously don’t know. It seems like basic due diligence to know the answer to this before voting.
Not sure if she’s for scaling back the War on Drugs, so I’ll say other than that, everything else is insane. And if she’s running against someone who doesn’t even have one thing in the “sane” column, that would push me in her direction. If she were anti-WoD, that would push me even further.
And if she’s running against someone who doesn’t even have one thing in the “sane” column, that would push me in her direction.
You’d vote for her over Trump? Because if she gets the nom, that is who she will be running against. And, frankly, she and Trump are both anti-interventionist (by current standards, anyway). Given the way the Deep State/Military Industrial Complex has submarined Trump’s anti-interventionism, I have little doubt they would do the same to her. I call it a tie, or close enough, between the two of them on that front.
And I can’t think of a single other issue where I prefer her over Trump, and some where I definitely don’t. But I haven’t exactly studied her policy positions, either. There may be something.
You’d vote for her over Trump?
Yes. Trump is anti-interventionist talk but has ended exactly zero of our involvements, and is currently promising Victory In Eurasia. He doesn’t really have a foreign policy vision beyond self-promotion. I give a higher probability that Gabbard would actually say, “Fuck you, we’re out of Afghan and Iraq and Syria like tomorrow, and the rest of the shitholes next week,” and then do it rather than our incumbent hem, haw, backtrack, do some symbolic things, and keep things going.
Obama fooled a lot of people into thinking he wanted to get us out of Iraq too.
Yep. But look at the bright side, one of his first official acts as President was to close Gitmo, and… shit.
From her Wikipedia writeup: “Gabbard has co-sponsored bills that would ban assault weapons and institute background checks for all gun purchases…”
She doesn’t seem to have articulated a position on the WoD.
I’d like to like her more, but her position on guns is a dq for me.
Yep. It’s my first checkpoint now.
I wouldn’t say I’m a single issue voter, but that’s a big one.
I’m skeptical that the president could do much about it. Look at Obama, he actually drove gun sales.
And she at least knows how to handle a weapon.
As an alternative to Trump, where I have strong disagreement with him on every single issue important to me, I’d be less unhappy with someone I disagree with on every important issue to me except one- and it’s my #1. My only qualm is the Supreme Court, and if a candidate promised to appoint justices who had an expansive BoR protection mindset, that might sway me. Gorsuch has been better than I had hoped, but Kavanaugh is just another big government guy, so Orange Man is not making me comfortable about the next pick..
Let me expand that a little. Pretty much every Dem is going to have some sort of gun-grabber baggage. But co-sponsoring a bill is what pushes it over the edge for me.
Also, if even Kamala Harris can come out for decriminalization of MJ, then Gabbard is way behind the curve. Not that I believe Harris on that, and she obviously has her own record to run against. But even the uncool kids are at least paying lip service to MJ decrim.
I don’t believe a word Kamala Harris says. Last I heard, she was claiming she wanted to decriminalize prostitution.
Only for herself. Those other Hos can rot in jail.
^This. She is clearly running away from her own record on social issues. Much baggage.
Gun grabber. That is a solid deal breaker for me.
I am a one issue voter. One’s positions on the second amendment is a pretty good indicator about their other positions. It tells you what that person thinks of you. If they think you are chattel or not.
She’s a rabid socialist, gun grabber, will make it impossible for people to get medicine they need, and thinks the “war against terrorism” is totes cool. But no wars of regime change, at least until she “grows in office” and changes her mind on that one issue she’s not completely insane on.
Well, no one else surprisingly seems to have commented on it — but I can’t let it stand without a compliment.
Re: your twitter gem, thanks for a big belly laugh this morning, OMWC. That’s a great one!
I was going to post it yesterday, but then it turned out fake news.
-8F, more snow.
Forgive me if I do not appear to be panicking about imminent global overheating. If the glacier in my driveway were to melt, I would feel no remorse.
Good morning, Old Man.
Pete Seeger was a weird old coot, but it was good to see him just being a musician.
Fake news!

“Con-artist fools academia” is dog-bites-man at this point.
Of course, it’s Trump’s fault.
““You have to understand that in the world where people use—even the President of this country uses Twitter and creates falsehoods every day,” Sendler said. “How do we then quantify the degree of guilt that you can do, right? Because, you see, if the most powerful man can do this eight, nine thousand times… and he doesn’t care. He still does his thing, and people still support him because they believe in the agenda that he executes.”
He is right, in this case. If someone can inflate their business accomplishments for years, then become a world leader who rules by sowing chaos with constant distortion—what’s to stop a confident, charismatic serial liar from manifesting a psychological career and being treated like a medical luminary?”
Never mind that the con started long before Trump’s campaign even.
Out of curiosity, how many Mormons, ex-Mormons, or jack Mormons do we have posting or lurking here?
So far I count me, Leon, and one of the few female glibs (forget her handle — not much coffee in me yet).
I’m of the “don’t believe in, or practice (see coffee above), the theology any more, but still carried as a non-tithing member in moderately good standing on church membership rolls due to deliberately sloppy bookkeeping, so solidly in line for The Second Best Heaven TM” persuasion.
I’ll be they’re overly represented in libertarian ranks because of the Mormon culture of reliance on self and a voluntarily chosen community, rather than government.
That could be said of any religion though.
Oh, I dunno. There’s at least one religion that doesn’t seem real big on the voluntarily chosen bit.
I think there might be some history of tension between the mormon church and the government. A little anyway.
Yeah, just a little. Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Mojeaux. Also, Gadionton (sp?).
We’re gonna need a bracket-style for you folks.
Yes, me and Gadianton and Michael.
I think it was CPRM who did [[[them]]] or something.
Square brackets do seem appropriate for Mormons.
[golf clap]
I’m almost afraid to ask, but… What do us atheists get?
⚡️
And, you know, I’m OK with that.
I think Derpetologist was raised Mormon, but i might be wrong. I’m fairly practicing, though i’ve always been fairly colorful in my language.
Considering that I’m drinking home cold brewed coffee flavored with TX whiskey (and coconut milk and white chocolate creamer) with the woman I’m sleeping with but not yet technically married to (got the marriage license yesterday), I might be a tad out of compliance with Mormon Best Practices TM.
You, sir, are an exemplary jack Mormon.
Mormons are like Irish pubs. No matter what city you are in, you can always find one.
Woah – yesterday had a crazy night. Somehow going out to dinner with the neighbors had us ending up at a Finnish couple’s house, and down in their sauna without a stitch of clothing on. Men first and then the ladies. Alcohol was definitely involved, including tar schnapps, which tastes like a burnt out campfire. I uh, got to see my neighbors in a whole new light.
Pics?
So just enjoyed a standard Finnish evening huh? Did they have willow branches to beat themselves with? (Wait, that might be for the second sauna.)
Tables were turned
Berkeley — which prides itself as the birthplace of the 1960s “free speech movement” — has long been a hotbed for political protests. In 2017, groups associated with white supremacist views descended upon the progressive city after school officials canceled appearances by Milo Yiannopoulos and other conservative speakers due to student safety issues.
The ensuing protests and counter-protests, which cost the city and school millions in damages and sometimes turned violent, pushed the university under a national spotlight. Politicians pontificated on the role of growing anti-fascist movements on campus, while the school repeatedly released statements indicating it was committed to free speech.
In this latest episode, UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ reaffirmed the school’s commitment to tolerance and inclusivity.
“Let there be no mistake, we strongly condemn violence and harassment of any sort, for any reason,” Christ said in a statement. “That sort of behavior is intolerable and has no place here. Our commitment to freedom of expression and belief is unwavering.”
Antifa hero punches out conservative agitator, is inexplicably charged with criminal assault.
Newsweek is on the case.
“…every word that follows these out of my mouth is going to be a bald-faced lie.”
Charged is one thing.
Convicted is another.
And jailed is yet another.
I’m not holding my breath.
Do people usually do jail timer for dotting someone’s eye? I can see house arrest or probation, obviously, pay and medical/cleaning bills. Assuming no priors or other aggravating circumstances I don’t think giving out a shiner or two should put you in a rape cage.
In Soviet California, the Rap Cage is Put in YOU!
I’m sure it varies. Maybe one of the resident criminal lawyers (no, not that kind of criminal lawyer) could say. This is probably not an aggravated assault, but without looking at the CA statutes I couldn’t say. I don’t think its misdemeanor assault, but again, CA statutes, etc.
Depends. Some years ago some guy was killed in a dust-up in the grocery parking lot. One punch, he fell and hit his head on one of those concrete parking markers. All of the cops, lawyers and judges around here remember that.
Getting into a physical confrontation shows not only violent tendencies but also extremely bad judgement. If I were a judge, yeah, it would mean jail time.
OMWC, now you have me fascinated by classic, serial westerns. That discount card illo – the seal contains symbols that appear to be a writing system. Any idea what they mean?
Racist dog-whistling at shitlord kids.
Well, of course. But which sort?
This sort.
Oh, you little tease…
Nope. They did a lot of that stuff on the show, there would be some signs on the trail and Hoppy would read a few paragraphs of meaning, translating them for everyone.
What about Wagon Train? Tried that yet. I watched a boat load of it when the heir was a newborn, and I was trying to stay awake in early AM feedings.
A delightful tidbit which warmed my heart on an otherwise grim day: My favorite clueless proggie mom (“I don’t want free stuff,” she loudly proclaimed without realizing she was actually asking for free stuff) has reported that her kid has started obsessively going through the trash and questioning every disposal. Serves mom right since mom is one of those recycle everything, screech at the bag boy in the grocery store kind of women.
Unfun fact – UPS does not deliver to PO Boxes.
I ended up waiting in line at the post office. The clerk claimed media mail didn’t get shipping labels, and the post office opens media mail boxes before pasting the shipping label on the box seams.
I was probably in a strange state of mind because the remark that “This needs a return address in case they can’t deliver it” was funny.
Most probably, the clerk was oblivious to the fact that it was going to a PO Box, but I prefer to think she admitted that the Post Office had been known to fail to deliver to itself.
the post office opens media mail boxes
What? Why?
Because it’s cheaper, but you’re only allowed to ship certain types of items with it. So they spend more money checking the chesp shipping boxes. But the fact that she slapped the label right over the seam made me doubt they actually put the effort into it.
Yeah, when I took my first full-time academic job I shipped a TON of books. Used USPS media mail but the guy at the post office told me to bring them all down unsealed. Two trips in my 2002 Saturn, about 30 boxes, all unsealed. So, once he’d checked them, I’m at the counter with duct tape and address labels.
That’s because the government* jealously guards its monopoly on delivery to official PO boxes as an extension of their monopoly on letter mail. But I think that UPS contracts with USPS for some last-mile deliveries.
(*)I’m aware that USPS is technically a “private” entity, but that is a charade since USPS is a government-chartered corporation that is the successor organization to a government agency and which retains government powers (USPS Postal Inspectors, etc).
Meh, if your company was explicitly created by an Act of Congress, then you are not a private entity. I’m looking at you Federal Reserve.
Yes. We often get UPS packages that were delivered to our local post office for our rural mail carrier to deliver to our house.
I get most of my UPS stuff at the po box. Most of my media mail outs are in bubble envelopes and get no shipping labels , probably ’cause they are cheaper postage.
UPS has some sort of contractual arrangements with Amazon and the PO.

I’m in need of a new AVR. Was all set to pick up an NAD because of their focus on sound first, but doing my homework saw this
https://www.soundandvision.com/content/nad-t758-v3-av-receiver-review-test-bench
What the hell kind of curve is that?
For 2/3rds the price I can pick this up.
https://www.soundandvision.com/content/yamaha-aventage-rx-a3060-av-receiver-review-test-bench
I’m not sure I actually will hear the difference and the Dirac Live with the NAD is likely better, but on some supposed to be music focused that makes me scratch my head.
Audio has gone to shit since the Bluetooth and sound bar crowd.
Dirac is great. I use a different DSP because I don’t use commercial amplification.
Thanks!

Vice President Mike Pence continued the Republican attacks on what they claim is socialism infiltrating the Democratic Party, making the dubious claim Friday that it was “freedom, not socialism, that ended slavery and won two World Wars.” Pence, speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, did not mention what started slavery in the United States.
“It was freedom, not socialism, that ended slavery, won two World Wars and stands today as the beacon of hope for all the world.”
If it was freedom that ended slavery then presumably it was also freedom that allowed it, with a provision written into the Constitution that specifically referred to slaves and the “three-fifths compromise,” whereby they were counted as less than free people. Moreover, Southern states continued to argue for the freedom to keep slavery in place as the country descended into the Civil War. It was also not capitalism, which Pence appeared to be referring to, when he said it was freedom that ended slavery. Indeed, many historians have noted the explicit links between slavery and the birth of American capitalism.
Pence’s claim about the ending of the World Wars is also historically questionable. The Soviet Union, under communist control, played a crucial—to some historians the most crucial—role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War II. The country also paid the heaviest price during the war as it battled Germany on the Eastern Front, losing an estimated 26 million people, including about 11 million soldiers.
Yeah, whatever, dude. Take your meds.
Newsweek? Theyre still around?
I mean remember how free the soviet union was. Definitely weren’t any slave labor camps there?
Don’t mischaracterize the reeducation camps for crimethinkers.
Totes different than slavery. Cause socialism – true scotsman socialism – is bunny hugging and rainbows.
Socialism is slavery you lying sacks of shit.
As I recall it was the early socialists whose main complaint about slavery was that only blacks in the US were enslaved. They advocated that everyone save the elite (socialists, of course) should be enslaved.
It is incredible how mendacious the left is.
Just like with Napoleon, the Germans were defeated by weather, distance, and the Russian willingness to sacrifice men and resources in order to exhaust an invader. None of this has anything to do with communism, although it might be argued that the Russian view of peasants as simultaneously a source of cultural pride and an expendable resource might have made them fertile ground for communism.
Cops hate it
The Kentucky House on Friday passed a bill that would allow people to carry concealed firearms without a permit or training.
The GOP-led state House voted 60-37 to approve the legislation and send it to Gov. Matt Bevin for a potential signature, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported.
The legislation had passed the state’s Republican-controlled Senate last month on the one-year anniversary of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting.
———–
The bill was opposed by the Louisville Metro Police Department and the Kentucky State Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).
“We are supportive of the rights we protect for all citizens but have safety concerns with this bill as it stands,” the FOP group said in a tweet before the vote. “We are concerned this bill could have potentially deadly, unintended consequences
————
If the bill becomes law, Kentucky will become the 15th state to adopt a permitless carry or “constitutional carry” laws, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) signed similar legislation into law in January.
The horror of Constitutional carry. Who will save us?
Have a judge in Hawaii Strike it down because it violates a Californians right to get to New York without having their sensibilities infringed.
15 states. This gives me much hope.
Do KY police think that there are criminals who don’t carry concealed weapons because it’s currently illegal to do so without a permit?
Who would Gabbard nominate to the Supreme Court?
Maybe the best timeline is one where we get a term of Trump, who packs the courts with originalists, and then a term of Gabbard who actually pulls American troops out of the Middle East.
