Reason number 40343094390843943098430 not to own an Alexa-like device.
Amazon reportedly employs thousands of people to listen to your Alexa conversations. Don’t worry though, it’s only a limited number of them!
(Ed Note: I own one Alexa-compatible device, which is my Bose QC35 headphones. I do not have Alexa turned on.)
Why in the world would anyone be surprised at this? Of COURSE the developers are listening to a couple of thousand Alexa conversations. In order for it to improve, they more or less have to. And then they share the sound files the exact same way we would if we could get away with it. “Listen to these two morons talk about something they know nothing about”
Or the drunk chick slurring out: “Alexa, buy me shome more of those fucking wine glasses, and some carpet cleaner. Fuck! “
None of this should be surprising to anyone.
“I do not have Alexa turned on.”
Sure, not turned on…
^This.
I don’t trust Amazon for privacy as far as I can throw them. Say what you will about Apple’s overpriced crap, they do seem to care about their customers’ privacy. I still don’t use Siri though.
Why would Siri be any different than Alexa? Just because you don’t use it doesn’t mean Apple isn’t collecting your spoken words as data, it just won’t give you any output.
(Obviously it isn’t because it would have to send data and you would notice that cellular data usage, but perhaps that’s only if you’re not connected to wifi.)
I just trust Apple more to not do that. It could very well be collecting info just like Alexa like you say but I prefer Apple’s it’s a possibility to Amazon’s it’s almost a certainty.
Apple is now making a big deal of privacy since other tech companies have been dinged hard by a lack of it.
Like Brett said, I just automatically assumed they were doing this.
You think Alexa isn’t turned on. Let’s wait a few years to find out.
Alexa is always on. Not having it turned on just means it won’t do anything for YOU, it will still do plenty for AMAZON.
(I don’t know this, but it’s still the safest assumption.)
Modern rules of connected devices: If it has a way to collect audio or video and an internet connection, assume it is on when it has power.
Meh. Amazon doesn’t scare me. The question is, are they giving it to the guys with the guns?
You have to ask?

Okay. At this point I’m wondering if the Three Stooges are actually some sort of plant by Donald Trump. I mean, if you wanted to set up a situation where a group of Democrats actively sought out to alienate large numbers of suburban swing voters from their party, I seriously doubt you could do much better than Tlaib, Omar and Gulag Barbie. And even more, they’re actively pulling the rest of the party to this sort of embarrassment.
They’ve somehow managed to get even New Yorkers pissed that them. That’s no small feat.

You mean handing out mortgages like candy to people who couldn’t possibly afford them didn’t work? I can’t imagine why.
I’ve heard some true horror stories of people who thought they were smart getting interest-only or even negative-equity loans in the go-go days in South Florida. And not rich people with strong cash flow. I can’t imagine buying a condo that they are throwing up 50,000 more of for the interest and hoping to come out ahead*.
*Some people did, I’m sure. But much like that article about the person who paid $1000/sqft in California, you better be real sure the market is going to $1200/sqft and not $500. The odds are that if you’re not a professional real-estate investor, someone who could actually afford the place took the equity growth and you’re holding the downside. Its a dangerous market to dabble in.
You do have to wonder why people don’t stop and ask “If this is such a money-maker, why am I being afforded the opportunity for no money invested?” It’s hard to gin up any sympathy for any party involved in the schemes. And I certainly couldn’t care less if one party in the scheme wants another party to go to jail over it. One fraudster defruading another fraudster and they both lose – sounds like justice.
While you can’t cheat an honest man, most(?) of people who took out dumb mortgages didn’t have any sort of fraud in mind, they just believed the hype of those inflating the housing bubble.
We are always the last to get in on these money making sca, ooops, deals. I just found out about tulips in Holland, man, I’m am gonna make some serious money…
My understanding of the “efforts to expand homeownership” was that it was about duping people too poor to take out conventional loans into joining in the fun. And it was directed from above.
It was, as ever, good intentions gone awry;
“Middle-class people own homes. In order to move people up from being poor to being middle-class, we just have to distort the market and get those poor people into homes”.
That, of course, confuses cause and effect – home ownership is an effect of middle-class traits (largely “deferred gratification”), not the other way around.
See, also – college education.
Both too poor and also uneducated as too how credit and interest works. Zero down payment, low payments for 4 years or so and suddenly reality sets in.
“It is balloon!”
An F Troop quote! Good for you C. Anacreon.
Very good friend of mine and his wife (only a year or so younger than me) filed for bankruptcy after buying 0% interest furniture. They honestly ‘thought’ that the interest was just foregone those years it wasn’t being applied–not that it would accrue, much less, show up all at once.
/yeah, never read the contract
I knew a guy who bought – no shit – about 90% of his possessions at Rent-a-Center. We tried so many times to make him see that he’s paying three or four times what it would cost to just buy the stuff at a regular retail store, but it didn’t click. He simply didn’t get it.
The fact that I’ve known so many people like this is why I have a hard time believing that poverty is some systemic injustice rather than merely the results of bad financial decisions.
“It’s math, not magic”
I love that phrase. I hatehatehate that it needs to be used with people I care about.
“Making big stupid banks bigger and stupider was the only possible course of action.”
I’m going to defend Bair as there basically no other option. All the FDIC can do is close the bad banks, make the depositors whole up to the legislated limit and close their accounts, and sell the outstanding assets (loans). Which is what she did – she just made the buyers of those loans take on the depositor liabilities because the FDIC didn’t have enough money to make the depositors whole outright. I don’t know how many individual depositors there were that greatly exceeded the FDIC limits. The real mistake was the moratorium on approving new bank charters, but the FDIC has no say in that.
In Bair’s opinion the efforts to expand homeownership were praiseworthy objectives, but “very misguided in terms of how it was executed,” because it backfired. However, it doesn’t “excuse the banks for doing stupid things” she stressed.
No, it doesn’t excuse the banks for doing stupid things. However, it should indict the people in the government who pushed these policies? In no small part, the banks were pretty much doing what the government was setting up every incentive for them to do. Fed policy was actively pushing investors further out on the risk curve and inflating asset prices in the wake of the bursting of the dot com bubble. Investors, banks included, were being pushed into increasingly speculative investment decisions.
Oh, hey, but that was all “praiseworthy”, right Sheila? I mean, who cares that the government caused one of the greatest financial crises in our lifetime. I mean their intentions were good, right?
God, that really made me want to slap her.
” However, it should indict the people in the government who pushed these policies”
Exactly. That’s what should piss people off about Occluded-Cortex: policies people like her actively made the banks follow ended up being disastrous failures and it’s somehow the fault of the people following orders instead of giving them. This is straight out of a Nuremburg defense: I didn’t personally do anything wrong; I was only establishing and dictating policy, not enforcing it.
I think there may have been some implied enforcement, “You are not making enough loans to low income people” type of thing
Yes, the CRA was wielded like a club.
The theory being, banks were more interested in being racist than making money, so they were unfairly denying loans to minorities.
The banks merely said they were denying loans to people who weren’t a good risk – there may have been correlation with race, but it wasn’t causation.
The feds then forced the banks to make loans to people the banks otherwise would have found too risky.
You know how that worked out, in aggregate.
Who is Barney Frank for 10,000,000 Alex ?

So Brexit is delayed until Halloween, I think they should do the old school trick or treating this year.
Guy Fawkes day could get real interesting when they no-deal in October.
If they had any balls, there would be blood in the streets right now. Unfortunately their nuts are duct taped to a strap on in Angela Merkel’s Nazi-play closet
It’s free HBO on cable this week, so I started watching their movie about Brexit last night (called, go figure, “Brexit”), with all the core real-life people in the middle of the whole thing the past few years played by actors. Dr. Strange/Sherlock plays the lead, apparently an elections consultant who people give much of the credit for the victory to. I’m only about 30 minutes in but so far it seems pretty good.
“Omar spoke at a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) fundraiser last month, where she called upon other Muslim Americans to “make people uncomfortable” with their activism and presence in the society and criticized the Jewish state.”
She’s a stupid agitator. Then they have the gall to claim Trump is a divider.
Let’s keep it real: Jews and Israel have done more and have contribute more to the North American experience than Muslims have. And with shitheads like her, it’s likely going to stay that way.
When Muslim sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. On Wednesday, CEOs of the nation’s largest banks testified before the House Committee on Financial Services, of which freshman representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a member. When JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Citigroup CEO Michael Corbat appeared before the committee, Ocasio-Cortez addressed the litany of billion-dollar fines that major banks have accrued after the 2008 financial crisis and pondered whether “fines related to misconduct [are] being incorporated into the cost of doing business.”
———-
Ocasio-Cortez: Okay, in my district, I represent Rikers Island. I represent kids that go to jail for jumping a turnstile because they can’t afford a MetroCard. Do you think that more folks should have gone to jail for their role in a financial crisis that led to 7.8 million foreclosures?
Jamie Dimon: I don’t think people should go to jail for people jumping the subway.
They aren’t – she’s fucking lying.
You might get a ticket or court appearance. And even that is being done away with because the “wrong” sorts of people are the ones participating in that sort of theft.
My understanding too.
I’m pretty sure no one ever got sent to Riker’s for jumping a turnstile unless they had a fairly lengthy record or were wanted on a warrant. AOC is one of those people that actually believes the “aspiring rapper” story.
To the tune of $225 million a year, BTW.

Leave her alone! She’s just code-switching!
Wait, she represents inmates in Rikers? Pretty sure their votes still go to their home district.
Yeah, just noticed that. A helpful reminder that she’s both evil AND stupid.
Team Blue spin: she didn’t say those kids were in Rikers. She just said it was in her district and that kids go to jail. That could be an entirely different jail.
“Do you think that more folks should have gone to jail for their role in a financial crisis that led to 7.8 million foreclosures?”
Absolutely. Barney Frank and a litany of D congresscritters should be wearing orange jumpsuits.

Haha damn man… They took my idea. I had devised this whole spiel as a response to the typical Leftist apologia for socialism. It went something like this:
“I’m in favor of Nazism. No no, that doesn’t have anything to do with what happened in Germany. They just got the wrong person in charge. Nazism just means full employment, keeping the nation safe, and making the economy fair so that nobody gets too much wealth. Real Nazism has never been attempted. “

GAS EXPLOSION COLLAPSES BUILDING CONTAINING AMERICA’S LARGEST PORSCHE COLLECTION
Shitty story all the way around. I probably would have included the dead guy in the headline, but…
Question for the construction guys: this seems to happen with some regularity. Is it generally mismarked lines?
My guess is laziness/cheapness: proper procedure for gas lines should be to locate them (eyes on) – the existence of a gas line is generally recorded, but its exact location will be unknown until you dig it up (unless it is shallow and has been wired/taped, or is old and is metallic). If you try to get by solely off of records, you are playing roulette.
We’ve cut through live utilities, but never anything that destructive. Sometimes it’s just idiots with power tools. (My brother was one—came down on sprinkler line with a scissor lift and flooded out the site and a bookstore downstairs . BIG PROBLEM.) The company I just interviewed with does drone surveillance for project management and they gave an example of subs trying to pin a mistake on their PEs, but the drone recording that day saved them having to pay to redig it. The gas company had mismarked the site. So I’m sure it happens, too.
Thanks to both of you. I figured out had to be a combo.
I don’t know. Vlade seems to have the backing of the Latino rap community.
Second interview (different firm) went off well. They spent most of it pitching me on the job. (I’m sure it’s easier chatting about what they know than grilling me on how little I know.) But I’m pleased. It’s a shame Trump’s tax breaks killed us all because I’m loving his economy.
I’m not loving the loss of deductible moving expenses to take my new job.
Didn’t you move from Chicago? I figured they’d have kneecapped you at the Illinois border and stolen your moving van.
I usually have to pay at tax time (a lot), but I make sure to withhold what I owed the prior year to avoid penalties. This year, despite a substantial raise, I got a refund. So, I’m happy.

Congrats. I just received an offer myself. I have to mull it over.

Morons are gonna moron.
It is the only logically consistent end game for the anti abortion people.
Their entire argument is that the fetus is vested with full human rights at the moment the sperm meets the egg. If that is true then it means that abortion is murder, not just murder but the most heinous sort of murder in that it is the murder of a defenseless innocent. There is literally no logical argument you could make which has abortion being illegal and a woman who seeks one not being the mastermind of a criminal conspiracy to commit that murder.
Now of course this is not the goal that most abortion foes seek because they know they would be smacked down hard for it so they equivocate and come up with weak rationales for why the mother should not be held liable for the murder she sought and paid for even though had she hired an assassin to kill someone she would face a harsher penalty than the assassin.
Course it gets worse because those same rights also guarantee an investigation should you die under mysterious circumstances to determine if there is anyone legally responsible for your death so it means that we need to begin treating every single miscarriage after the first trimester and possibly some sooner than that as a potential crime and every woman who has a miscarriage has to be forced to undergo a forensic medical exam to determine if there was any action she or anyone else took which caused or contributed to that miscarriage
There is literally no logical argument you could make which has abortion being illegal and a woman who seeks one not being the mastermind of a criminal conspiracy to commit that murder.
Mens rea. Do they have the intent to murder, or just an intent to have an outpatient procedure?
An outpatient procedure which is illegal and results in the murder of the fetus. Sorry it is literally impossible to argue that they lacked mens rea. THE ENTIRE POINT OF AN ABORTION IS TO END THE FETUS’ LIFE. The only way she would lack mens rea is if she had no clue they were performing an abortion on her.
Literally if you believe that abortion is murder then that makes the mother the mastermind of a criminal conspiracy to commit murder for hire there is no way to have it any other way.
it means that we need to begin treating every single miscarriage after the first trimester and possibly some sooner than that as a potential crime and every woman who has a miscarriage has to be forced to undergo a forensic medical exam to determine if there was any action she or anyone else took which caused or contributed to that miscarriage
This is no less bullshit than the last few times you trotted it out only to be shot down.
I’ve yet to see anyone even begin to propose how it is wrong.
If I wake up dead tomorrow for no apparent reason someone is going to check to see why because I might have been murdered. If the fetus turns up dead tomorrow why does it not get the same protection? If you refuse to grant the fetus that protection then you literally cannot outlaw abortion because all anyone needs to do is to claim they had a miscarriage and well, with no investigation into the death of the baby they get away with it. Kind of hard to convict someone of a crime that you patently refuse to investigate just because the alleged perpetrator says the right magic words.
So please if the logic is so obvious lay it out. What is the moral rationale for not treating post first trimester abortions as potential murders when we treat unexplained deaths as such and conduct an investigation to determine the cause of death?
By the same measure, the only logically consistent position for pro-choice people is to acknowledge that some people are more equal than others, by insisting that some entities who are undeniably alive, genetically homo sapiens, and genetically distinct from any other such entity, are nevertheless something other than a person.
I put no stock in genetically homo sapiens so yes I freely admit it. I put no stock in that clause because I do not limit my conception of rights as thing that solely belong to homo sapiens but rather to ANY conscious and self aware entity whether homo sapiens or not. Given that then yes a fetus while alive, genetically distinct, and homo sapiens does not possess rights until it reaches a minimal level of mental development.
Good to know that killing someone in their sleep is perfectly fine for you, since such an entity is neither conscious nor self-aware at that time.

Well that was impressive. Two and a half minutes from surface to space. Wow.
Be wary when it transmits the coordinates to Allan’s Snackbar and starts reentry.

That was fucking AMAZING!!!!!

Roughly a 33% participation rate. I call bullshit. You couldn’t get me to take one of these surveys with a gun to my head.
However these were forced onto employees there was some mandate from the employers. I know my company plays this game with employee satisfaction surveys participation rates. As a result because I like my boss I every question is the midpoint answer. If no midpoint I randomly alternate.
They separate questions into company as a whole v. direct manager. Conveniently, nothing for the department leadership.
It’s working exactly as it was intended.
What a ridiculous waste of time, money, and effort. Utter mumbjo-jumbo.

Oh, go fuck yourself. The whole thing is no better than the parts “taken out of context”.
Here is the thing. Let’s assume it is true.
It is still better to be a 2nd class Muslim citizen in the US than to be a first class citizen in any of the Muslim shitholes around the globe. Pick one, but either way shut your pie hole.
But it is NOT true and I’m sick and tired of hearing politicians trying to tear the country apart. She deserves every bit of pushback for that crap.
She is a piece of shit. Period.
The proggies here are terrified to consider it, though.
Any rumblings of her getting primaried, yet? Whats the chances of a Republican beating her if she doesn’t get primaried?
Fuck, who knows?
As Leap says, Minneapolis proggies have a special ability to pretend nothing is wrong.
Minneapolis proggies after voting for Omar.
I know, and I agree, My point is that they have it better here. I hate to be all ‘America, Love it or Leave it’ but for types like her, it is true. Because the complaint isn’t about being treated as less than, it is that they want to make our society like their shitholes and they can fuck right off.
How about this. Keep acting like assholes and I’ll consider you unwanted intruders.

Hey! You got a new avatar!
Thanks for noticing C. Hope you and the fam had a blast on vacation. One day I’d like to make it over to some of the islands there.
I’ll second that. I saw your note about the puppies well after the thread died, but I’m glad it provided a nice diversion. We didn’t wait in line either, but made sure we took our morning walk when we knew the dogs were on the beach.
KSuellington, it’s my favorite warm weather vacation and one of the only ones we’ve gone more than once. It’s amazing.
Sweet! It’s on the bucket list.
What I will say about Turks and Caicos is that there’s not a lot to do besides beachside activities. We did a lot of snorkeling — an underwater national park was right in front of our condo, with tons of big turtles swimming about and colorful tropical fish – and my son rented a small sailboat several times and went off on his own exploring, but there was not much use for the rental car besides trips to the store and going to restaurants in the evening. But all the more reason to just relax on the beach every day and not feel guilty that we were missing some sightseeing obligation. In my wife’s words, we ‘perfected the art of doing nothing.” It did mean that our duty-free rum seemed to disappear pretty quickly though. Overall a really great trip, a true ‘vacation’, if you will.
I agree with that.
Our summer vacations are waaaaaay more active. We tend to go to National Parks and hike our asses off.
T&C is the place we just chill and enjoy each others company. Breakfast, walk, beach. Simple and beautiful.
And of course then there’s this.
Nice! When you lead a really busy life (as I know you do) and have all the hecticness that comes with living/working in a metropolis it is really nice to go on vacation and not really do much at all. The spot we go to a lot is on the Sea of Cortez north an hour from Cabo. Often we see more goats than people, which is a damn fine way to spend a week or two.
That’s pretty astounding. I wonder how may Reps are pro-abortion.
Depends, is it their wife’s baby or the mistress’?

Have you had High West’s Bourye? It’s on sale at my local store for $65.
I’ve not had that one. At that price, I have some pretty high standards. I haven’t bought a bottle of Rendezvous Rye or Campfire since they jacked up the prices.
I’ll pick one up tomorrow and let you know what I think.
I HAVE A PERSONAL TASTER!!!!!11!!!!
Seriously, I look forward to your review. Also, I’m curious what you pay for it. My store has a real good selection (I mean, for NoDak), but I am starting to figure out that the “average” stuff prices seem to be pretty much in line with Minneapolis, but when you start getting into the better stuff, the mark-up starts getting a little more than I care to cover.
Whoops. None available in Idaho. Sorry.

Didn’t the Olympics already greenlight this idea? There’s no chance the Feds will mind their own business on this issue after that.

Yes. Chinese social media outrage is particularly ugly. Swarming nationalists that would make Il Duce or Herr Hitler blush.
It helps that a bunch of them are getting paid for it.
Yeah, the Party pursued a blatant policy of whipping up nationalistic furor after 1989. It’s achieved its objectives swimmingly.
I’ve been there. It’s pretty damned amazing.
On a capitalist note, they were found by a farmer who was digging a well and came across pottery shards. He quit farming and set up a table in the gift shop, autographing copies of the book on the terracotta warriors for a fee. I’ve got one. He’s probably dead by now.
That’s cool! When was this? I was there in 2001.
I think it was in the ’70s when they were first discovered. I was there in 2004. It was an entire complex with structures built around the dig sites with elevated walkways, so you were looking down on the dig.
My wife lived near the museums in Philadelphia when we were dating. I would never consider touching something that old. That guy is an idiot.

Yeah, it’s not the best version… I think I saw him tell it on Letterman or something. I about peed laughing. It was great.
I’m currently enjoying a Blood Orange Wheat beer brewed within 40 miles of my house. I am complimenting that with a Glencairn (or 3) of 100% Rye whisky distilled within 40 miles of my house. And the majority of ingredients in both of them were grown no more than 100 miles from my house.
I fucking love America.
I’m enjoying a vodka distilled 3,000 miles from my home with Fresca cloned in a laboratory somewhere.
I also fucking love America.
I just had a Yeungling that was brewed somewhere.
I, too, fucking love America.
I was at a happy hour years ago, and this dude ordered a Yuengling because, and I quote: “I like Chinese beer”
I hope your response was “konichiwa bitches!”
I never made that mistake… out loud.
/never heard of them until recently or seen it in a store
‘Merica’s oldest brewery!!
oldest, or oldest continuous? Because most breweries shut down during prohibition, whilst Miller and Annheiser switched over to yeast production (at least on the books)
I’m always amazed that the oldest brewery in the world was started in 1040 (maybe earlier). Its older than the crusades.
They need to up their game then. Do they even advertise?
Weihenstephan, right? Or am I mis-remembering?
You are correct Mike. Also a great beer incidentally.
Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen might be my absolute favorite beer. It’s certainly top 5. Top of my bucket list is a trip to Germany, and a visit to Weihenstephan is a must.
Road trip!!!
I, too, love fucking America.
This one?
Pottsville PA or Florida
You’re right. I guess the most impressive part is that the beer has blood orange juice in it, which obviously grows nowhere near here.
I fucking love capitalism!
I’m drinking Pepsi. Perhaps it was bottled at the plant 15 miles from me
KK! So, I FINALLY started listening to Mike Rowe’s “That’s How I Heard It.” I’m hooked. And I am also going to be very disappointed in a couple weeks when I get caught up on 3 years of back-episodes and can’t listen to 10-20 installments a day.
Also; how’s the genealogy hunt going?
Yay!!! He is a national treasure.
I have been in touch with a number of my brother’s cousins, but they all disappear after exchanging a few messages. My brother’s 1/2 brother knows about him, has his email address, but hasn’t been in contact. People puzzle me. That’s your brother. Oh well.
No DNA matches with close family on his father’s side yet.
Just putting this out there with no ill-intent, but maybe people who tend to put their children up for adoption are more dysfunctional and tend to have less fellow-feeling for their family members.
So, maybe not *that* unexpected of a response, assuming there is any genetic or situational cause and effect there.
They mostly seem pretty normal, but yeah, I get the feeling there was some fuckupedness going on.
One of his cousins sent me a Facederp message with a Richard Spencer-style screed. I have only exchanged a few messages with her previously, and only about DNA stuff. It was a bizarre non-sequitur.
I agree that he is a national treasure…or should be. I grew up hearing Paul Harvey on the radio. Mike’s tribute to him is so spot on…it’s hard to explain how happy and nostalgic it makes me.
And, even if Paul Harvey never existed, Mike’s story telling is so interesting that they stand well on their own. Very good stuff.
I grew up listening to Paul Harvey too. It’s why one of my all-time favorite Simpsons bits was Grampa and others at the nursing home listening to Paul Harvey on the radio finishing up one of his trademark “bet you didn’t know”-style stories with “and that little boy who nobody liked……..grew up to be………. Roy Cohn!”
Yup, my dad loved to listen to talk radio and I also grew up loving Paul Harvey.
Good day!
Both you guys owe it to yourselves to check out his podcast. Episode 53 is currently my favorite…more for the actual story than anything Mike says. It’s O. Henry levels of irony.

Really good hockey.
ALLCAPS
REALLY GOOD HOCKEY!!
LEAFS 4 BRUINS 1!!
When hitting people is written into the actual rules, rather than being superfluous aspect the refs let go, then I might consider hockey a sport.
You live in Wisconsin and don’t consider hockey a sport?
It isn’t there, shockingly. All that ice and they waste it on fishing and crashing.
In hockey, what are the rules for hitting someone?
On a very basic level, you can do it if they control the puck. So, you know, it actually is written into the rules.
But what are the rules? In a football play it is very clear who can hit who and when. I think in football the rules should allow for more hitting, but I despise ‘sports’ where it is even less clear. If you can’t hit anyone, it’s not a sport, it’s a game. The more that is blurred, the less of a sport it is.
You can absolutely hit the puck carrier. You can’t leave your feet or go for the head. You gotta keep your hands down. You can’t deliberately go knee-to-knee. Cross checks (using your stick in both hands to drill the guy) is a penalty, except in front of the net (which I consider complete bullshit).
Slashing and spearing are both penalties.
Physical play away from the puck is fine, too, just not checking.
The idea of the check is to separate the man from the puck. Big hits are mostly entertainment.
Hitting is in the rule book and definitely a huge part of the game.
So only the guy with the puck can get hit? Or can other people be hit when deemed?
Not checked, but contact is fine.
Watch carefully some time. It’s pretty clear. During a face off, for instance, the two centers and two set of wings will attempt to physically get position, not dissimilar to basketball or football. You can’t grab or check. The guy with the puck is fair game while he has the puck – again, under the rules – or has just passed it (finishing the check).
It’s actually pretty controlled. Just really fucking fast.
So one guy? That’s it? Fucking ice fags.
Lol. I’m getting the feeling you’re not on the verge of being a fan. But I muscled through in case there were others who were curious.
I guess you can say I’m stuck in the middle!
You’re either trolling or being willfully ignorant. Likely both. There’s all kinds of physical contact that Tundra spelled out for you.
Fucking ‘Sconies.
No, I like the hockey fights and hits, but I hate how the rules limit it instead of encourage it. Unrelated, an Alt-Rock song I like, no clever way to link.
Well that’s just silly. What sport encourages fighting? Other than boxing or martial arts type stuff. Football sure as hell doesn’t.
You know I’m right. Don’t have a breakdown, just admit it.
In football, anyone within 5 yards of scrimage, even now in the pussified game, is legal to hit, why limit it even more? Hit some one damnit!
Carolina coming on strong late.
It will feel like home again when the Caps choke. Just like the Vikes.
Empty net!
OMG long range empty net goal!!!
Canes were better than I expected.
I’m a little scared about the potential for heavy drinking this weekend. The wife and I are bringing 5 bottles of red wine to a friends house for a weekend visit.
We’ll be making homemade pasta and drinking wine, booze and beers.
Somehow my wife purchased 5lbs of mozzarella at the restaurant supply store.
It’ll be interesting.
Mr. Turtle reading a book, 5 bottles of wine equals about 2hrs of drinking between adults, so I advise you buy more.
I’m with CPRM; I think our definitions of “heavy drinking” may differ.
You understand this is what I’m bringing to a house full of booze and beer.
Ahh…gotcha. A gift for the hosts. You kids have fun.
Also; your wife’s purchase of 5lbs of God’s Cheese let’s me know you will be in good hands.
5 lbs of mozzarella? Sounds like you’re gonna have a Cheese Plug https://youtu.be/jGu2HDwE0gM
I’m still unclear how she thought this was a good idea.
They sound like David bynre mixed with the cramps.
Ditto. Four adults, weekend, five bottles = underboozed.
Ahh. A “gift”. I’m looking forward to Monday’s report.
See above. This is my good faith gift to the host or “thank you for serving me booze all weekend”

Sweeeet. Thanks for posting.
That was a good read. Thanks for that. Scary stuff the lengths that engineers have to go to to deal with high voltages.
I would happily buy a whole book of stories like that.
Reminds me of some of the stuff Lachowsky has posted here. Engineering and operations of a steel mill. I like stuff like that. Of course, I read books about concrete construction, building skyscrapers, the history of banking; I just like to learn how things work. People actually doing things is cool.
That was fascinating. I wonder how it’s going, 30 years down the line?
Haven’t been able to keep up with the Assange drama. The only “evidence” I heard of Assange breaking a law is that he encouraged Manning to steal more classified info. And that info is thin gruel. Something along the lines of, “Guys like me always want more leaks.” Has the US govt released any other evidence that Assange is this monster?
When do they arrest all of the NYT?
Exactly. The MSM is disgusting for not standing up for this guy.
While I do think Assange has broken laws, the embrace of Manning and Snowden should logically mean that assage should also face lesser charges…but then again, with this whole second Red Scare, I haven’t heard any word of Snowden..
While I do think (every person the War Boners in govt wants to shut up) has broken laws,…
FTFY.
While I may agree with the stated goals of Assange, I do not know the unstated goals, and certainly do not agree with the strategy he has used.
Someone like Snowden did the whistle blowing thing in a manner I’d prefer, but I still am going to give whistle blowers a lot of latitude. To get back to my original question, what exactly did he do that was illegal? And was it illegal because he was being targeted for embarrassing the powers that be?
He took info from all and shared it with all. No editing, concerns for sensitive subject matter, or checking with the powers that be first. You can’t have that. He is dangerous to those in power and a hero to those concerned about freedom and openness.
I am in zero position to judge any of this and I don’t trust to media to offer the slightest bit of fair or accurate coverage.
I really can only watch from afar and shrug my shoulders at the whole thing.
Well, I’d say the military tactics and information Manning gave him where a breach of security and endangered soldiers, even if I don’t agree why those soldiers were there, that is certainly a breech of law and a bad thing to do. I’ve had a lot to drink, my argumentation may not be strong. But I’m more in favor of doing the right things in the right way than the right things in the wrong way. If pot is illegal, then everyone smoking pot should be prosecuted to the fullest extent, if only to show the stupidity of the system.
From what I can glean from the reporting, he assisted in Manning stealing data, not just releasing it. So therefore he’s charged as a coconspirator to the crime Manning was convicted of.
Thanks, Spud. That’s where I’m going with my question. The only evidence I’ve seen that he assisted Manning is that he is alleged to have said that he’ll publish more if Manning has it. The NYT, WAPO etc I’m sure said something similar to the people that gave them the Pentagon papers.
The other cloudy issue is that Assange is a foreign citizen who was operating outside of the US. He doesn’t have Constitutional protections.
It’s ‘gleam’ as in Gleaming the Cube
I always confuse that with Solarbabies for some reason.
Btw, is that a QUILTBAG crab on the front page?
That sounds made up, but fitting.
is that replacing LGBTQ+?
The pronoun debate is getting out of hand.
To support my Twitter friend Lou.
Hah! That’s good.
“They” is the one I hate most of all, though. Using “they” to avoid gendering. I’m sympathetic to the desire to accommodate trans people (I’m not, not really, I think it’s faddish claptrap), but this resort to “they” offends my sensibilities much more than I care what gender some trans dude thinks he is.
I was bitched out by my college English professor circa 2001 for using they as a third person singular, which they (hah!) thought was improper usage, and shit has gone way down hill since then..
We have a perfectly serviceable neutral pronoun: he. He’s used for the pinnacles of excellence and the depths of depravity. He’s emblematic of what we love least and hate most. He doesn’t carry any baggage, he’s a perfectly adequate descriptor for all that is generic and sexless. You start throwing around female pronouns, suddenly you’re incorporating undue specificity. But you use he and it’s utterly sanguine. He is odorless, flavorless, you could mix him into your coffee and never know the difference. Masculine pronouns are just fine as neutral pronouns.
Having to go from “he” to “he or she” or “man” to “man or woman” ends up with some hilarious results
Okay Jeffery, put away the drill and let the asian man go.
There are languages where none of this is an issue. Turkish, for example. The fact that ‘o’ means both ‘he’ and ‘she’ has clearly led to the progressive utopia that is Turkey.
Erdogan agrees.
Oh jeez, she’s a breathy speaker. “I w(H)ondered wHat He w(H)ould tell me, how Hard it w(H)ould be to discuss his Horrific crimes.”
I actually provided said professor with evidence of ‘they’ being used in the third person singular from historical writings, they aquiested when proven wrong, other profs pushed back only to be defeated when I confronted their facts. College was fun in that way, the people who were wrong would cower to not be proven a fraud and lose their jobs in front of a class…
Two different “theys”. The historical one conveys the notion that one does not know the sex of a person who is not present. The modern one conveys the notion that one celebrates the desire of a person who is right there to confuse you with their gender fluidity.
I know, I’m talking about how 18 years ago third person ‘they’ was historically ignored, while today it is mandatory, or even insufficient.
My objection is entirely aesthetic, I realize I’m probably on the wrong side of history, but I find the current usage ugly and ungainly, and political and cynical and I know I’m a reactionary, but God how I hate it.
If you were really such a reactionary, you’d have no problem with her use of the voiceless labialized velar approximant.
I have no problem with the third person usage of they, it’s when I’m told to gender my pronouns to the liking of the reader that I get upset. Third person they allows every ready to identify with a character. While he, she and xe exclude readers from the experience and he or she is unnecessarily bulky.
I think you mixed up reactionary and fucking nerd. But you did say something about labia, so at least you ain’t queer.
So I guess “it” is right out then.
From what I’ve read, that’s the new term that some in the Alphabet Mafia are using.

You sir, are no HM. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or a diss.
I certainly take it as one.
Oh jesus,, jUst heard a “omg” story. So this morning I drop the kid off for school and I see that there’s a cop car blocking the route forcing all the cars to turn on the cross street. So traffic is stacked and then the ambulance comes through, so it’s obviously been an accident.
So this evening the husband asks “so were you on the drive this morning? becuase that was *almost* me.”
Get this, three lanes of traffic. He’s in the left lane, there’s two cars next to him. The car in the far right lane HITS SOMETHING (he thinks a parked car) and then is fucking AIRBORNE. The car next to him, swerves left/ he swerves left to avoid that car. The right-hand car, some kind of SUV, FLIPS OVER onto its roof, crashing the hell out of its front window and hood. So he pulls over and calls 911. Luckily he’s ok and the car wasn’t hit by anything. But he says the aftermath looked like a bomb with shrapnel just all over the road for twenty yards.
Sometimes God has your number, and sometimes it’s the person two lanes over. phew!
It is known.
Known and made into movies.
Heh I love that brain-dead series.
Brain Dead.
Michael Bay directing traffic in your area?
It’s amazing what people do on the road. Glad he remained unscathed.
Twenty years ago I was driving back from golfing with a couple buddies on the freeway doing 65 in my Jeep puckup. All of a sudden I saw a flash. I look in my side view and see taillights in the fast lane. Some ejit flew by me at 80 mph going the wrong way on the freeway. Two lanes over.
Jesus, Collins!!

I really don’t want to antagonize the Rt. Hon. CPRM…
But, I gotta give the late-niters some Freedom Toons.
Oh, yes–I would just like to point out that this is truly the Golden Age of Ballooning.
Is ballooning what they do in those PornHub videos where zaftig ladies gorge on comestibles so as to make their tummies visibly swell?
