…so if you wish to call me out and complain about my links being too Mexican, not Mexican enough, or whatever other pejorative you want to lob my way—don’t bother. I’m at the gym.
I am up earlier than normal to accommodate so if for some reason you find me saltier than normal. Don’t blame me, put the blame where it belongs.
This seems fitting for Sunday morning. National Review defends…coffee? This is either Poe’s Law or they just forgot the part where they are supposed to leave out their MO for their “You know what really grinds my gears?” audience. Its called “Cold Brew Coffee.” Its not redefining “coffee” if you add a modifier. Society is not redefining a word to suit the agenda of Big Coffee, Starbucks, or caffeinated hipsters taking 30 minutes to adjust their purple sash, refit their vintage, ironic Johnny Rotten studded belt to their skinny jeans while a line 6 guys deep is behind them in the men’s room. Next they’re going to write an article bitching about pop being soda, soda being Coke, even if its Pepsi. I’m just sitting here thinking there’s a label on the goddamn can. Call it that.
Also, for your edification (Yes, thats a fucking word) “The story of the Toddy® Cold Brew System begins in 1964 when Todd Simpson, after graduating as a chemical engineering student at Cornell, tasted a cup of coffee created with a liquid concentrate made by an ancient Peruvian process.” Starbucks was founded 31 March 1971.
This is some weird shit... which one of you did it?
On the floor in front of them in a pool of blood was 30-year-old Farina Caspari, suspected of honoring Weiss’s dominator command to first kill him and Enders and then take her own life, which she clearly did, according to investigators.
Weiss and Enders left wills at their sides, presumably to ensure that the motives were clear. “Investigators suspect they were all members of a kind of sex circle with a focus on the Middle Ages,” according to RTL news quoting local investigators on the scene. “[Weiss] may have been the guru of the group.”
Gay dude running for president turns down another gay dude pining for an interview. I like Rubin, but I’m pretty sure Butt-kowski turned him down because Fox News has a much bigger audience. I’m just saying.
A third of the migrants at the border claiming asylum with the children they brought with them are NOT their children. Something they confirmed via DNA testing. Anybody working around government types might point out this is the Hawthorne Effect in action. This is body of behavioral research that suggests people will react a certain way to confirm the bias of the observer. This came about when researchers confirmed workers are more productive when their supervisor is watching (No…Shit). To break it down: when you make it known that there is only so much room for families at the detention center, and you’ll be released with instructions to be appear in court for your asylum claim…don’t be surprised when people show up with kids, claim asylum, and fail to appear in court—even if they are not their goddamn kids.
Deontay Wilder knocks out Dominic Breazeale in the first round to defend his heavyweight title; this is brutal. If the name “Deontay” drives you up the wall like the word “cold brew coffee” or you’re too much of a choir boy to watch to watch a guy getting knocked the fuck out…don’t click the video at this link.
Have some old guy music.
Am I the only one awake?
We got up early to watch some people blow something up.

Yikes – no great loss that.
The goes the Bethlehem skyline.
You’re looking at probably the biggest snowpack in the history of Memorial Day. If you can get there.
It might even snow while you’re there.
Definitely taking my skis. Before I was worried about the snow being too slushy. It doesn’t look like that will be a problem now.
69 News!
It’s 7:46 here. I’m taking a meal break (jalepeno grits with cheddar) and should be done for the ‘weekend.’
Looks like my next couple of days are gonna be pretty easy. There are positive and negatives with that.
I fucked up this polenta. I’m used to grits. If anyone has a recipe I’d love to hear. I use:
One cup water
One fourth cup polenta/grits
Cheese, salt and peppers to taste.
I didn’t have chicken stock but I normally use it. Use about half milk and half water for the liquid. Salt, duh. It is pretty good now that it’s solidified after a day, but I think I went too big too fast on this one.
PM, sorry.

“but I think I went too big too fast on this one.”
Phrasing and/or euphemisms!
I was going to mow the lawn after breakfast, but the rain started. Oops. I guess I’ll just get breakfast.
Deontay in big, strong and apparently with some skills that he didn’t learn in college. I’m not going to ask him to pay the student loan debt for the kids. You ask him, not me. Rather, you tell him, not me
Migrants are showing up with kids that aren’t theirs? Who’s surprised? I do wonder about where the actual parents are and what convinced them to send their kids.
I would have loaned my kids out but no way would I have borrowed some one else’s. Doesn’t make sense.
Perhaps some of the parents didn’t “send” their kids. Perhaps some of the kids were taken. I don’t think that is out of the question.
This is common. When my wife worked in the hotel industry, where almost all housekeeping staff were illegal aliens from Hondurus and El Salvador, they would come here without their kids first and earn enough money to pay human smugglers to smuggle their kids across the border.
I do wonder about where the actual parents are and what convinced them to send their kids.
“How much for the little girl, Mister?”
That’s the easy, glib answer. I’m sure there’s some of that, but that it is also more complicated.
I assume at least some is a large family “borrows” out some kids to childless friends, cousins, aunts and uncles to get into the US with the plan to reunite once everyone is across the border. That’s the optimist in me…
Apparently Trump is going to declare total war on Iran. All that “I don’t want a war with Iran” stuff is just a smokescreen.
I had a visitor Friday night and last night, some guy in a black fur coat, apparently taking a head count of my bees. He got through the electric fence which wasn’t electrified ’cause the fence charger was dead, which I didn’t realize. I will get a new one today but maybe the damage has been done to the bees.
I reassembled the hives yesterday and was hoping he/she wouldn’t come back so soon but like a lot of other decisions made over the years I was wrong. However, the Honey Harvest will still go on, third Sunday in Sep.
Sometimes you just have to grin and bear it.
Sounds like a grizzly scene.
Damn. Sorry to hear that, Fourscore. Is there still a possibility of getting some honey or did Yogi kill the queen?
I emailed the bee folks to see if they have any leftover bees, if so I’ll get some tomorrow. Last night’s visit pretty well tore up the frames but fortunately I have a good bit of extra. I’ll check my partner’s stuff today, he’s several miles away so not in the same bear range as I am. OTOH, he’s had problems at his place in the past.
It’s actually my fault for not getting another charger yesterday so no one to blame but myself.
We need common sense Ukraine control.

F-ing autocorrect
That too.
Your local government can fix it.
Sorry.
You should march on city hall!
Given the opportunity the problem will be solved locally. It has been in the past.
So was Brave New World lying to me, or is sex on a bearskin rug even better than usual?
And how do you clean the rug afterwards? Wipe it with a rabbit?
Whoa. Some guy came and took your hives apart and left them that way? Some guy sounds like he needs an ass kicking.
I assume since he was wearing a black fur coat that he was Russian.
Probably a greasy looking guy too.
How about that Amash guy? He publishes an essay on the twatters calling for impeachment. Obstructions!
And again, I’m back to the question, “If I refuse to open the (empty) trunk of my car for a cop on a fishing expedition for dope, is that “obstruction of justice”?
Fuck it. 535 heads in a pile on the Capitol steps is looking like a viable soution.
Where is our Rubicon Crossing moment?
I would argue that it happened immediately (Whiskey Rebellion, Alien & Sedition Act).
But Teddy’s imperial interventions, the creation of the Fed Reserve, and the drug laws enacted in 1913 were probably the catalysts to all this bullshit. Not that it wasn’t going forward before that. Just an acceleration.
Not enough skulls on the skull throne yet.
“How about that Amash guy? He publishes an essay on the twatters calling for impeachment. Obstructions!”
Amash, always liked that guy. But right here, he is way out of line. You can’t impeach the guy because you don’t like him. Duh, you’re being as dumb as the dems, Justin.
BTW, if anyone really wants to understand Trump, watch the documentary, Trump, on Netflix. You get a clear picture if just where Trump came from and an understanding of why he does the stuff he does.
Sure you can – that’s the whole point. It’s just a “vote of no confidence”. Political theater.
That’s the easy, glib answer.
That’s me. Glib and easy.
Easy, like Sunday morning?

Post-
racialrational AmericaDemocratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders unveiled an education policy proposal on Saturday designed to pump billions of dollars into the public schools system, in a bid to appeal to black voters who shunned the U.S. senator during his previous presidential run.
The 10-point plan Sanders detailed in a speech in South Carolina aims to end racial disparities in the public education system. America’s education policy debate has long been steeped in discussions of race and racial discrimination.
———
Sanders said he would push for funding to better integrate some schools. He also called for a federal funding minimum and moving away from using property taxes to pay for schools. Critics argue that using property taxes results in wealthy areas having better schools than more impoverished neighborhoods.
He wants to spend an additional $5 billion a year on summer school and after-school programs across the United States and also called for an increase in federal funding for programs for students with disabilities.
Teachers’ salaries should be set at a minimum of $60,000 a year, Sanders said, and tied to regional cost of living. Schools should be required to provide free meals, breakfast, lunch and snacks to all students, he said.
He added that he wants to provide another $5 billion to increase community services at schools, including health and dental care, mental health and job training.
Why so little< Grandad? Why do you hate teh poors and the coloreds?
Yeah, why not $10 or $100 billion? Sometimes I’m tempted to enter a Dem primary and go full on crazy socialist, taunting the Liz Warrens and AOCs of the party about why they are being such tight fisted, luke warm socialists. Actually advocate “re-education” camps, worker takeover of businesses, etc.
Or even go the other way when there are already five or six Dems in the race vying to out socialist each other?
Be the common sense Democrat – “Screw the Teachers Union; set minimum wage at zero to end job losses; balance the freaking budget; assume responsibility for your own life style and multiple mistakes, etc.” There probably are enough Dems left who are fed up with far-Leftists and you could win such a primary.
That could be the dumbest education plan I’ve ever read about. I mean, wow, that’s dumb.
And this is an area of great personal interest. I spend a lot of time at our kids schools, and a lot of time working with kids at church as well.
We already have free lunches and free breakfasts. Free snacks? Heck, we didn’t have snacks at all when I was in school. The fact that lots of places let kids snack at their desk is a pretty big change… but free snacks? Does Michelle Obama know about this?
Minimum $60k salary? Did he just pull that out of his butt? Teachers don’t make huge salaries, but if you factor in their retirement plan and vacation time, they are pretty well compensated for the level of education and training they’ve invested. (I don’t know how it works these days, but when I was in school the elementary education majors were not taking any classes that I would deem “challenging”. One girl I dated was taking “Bulletin Board Art”, which is an appropriate skill… but the class was really easy compared to my really easy “Intro to Drawing” class. At least we had to produce a bunch drawings that were judge by the skill on display, and demonstrate particular techniques that we were learning.)
Community services at schools… well, OK. Not sure about what exactly we are doing here. I mean, it would be better if everyone got decent healthcare and dental care growing up. But why it is directly linked to school isn’t entirely clear.
As far as the real solution to education, I think Jerry Clower covered this quite a while back….
He also called for a federal funding minimum and moving away from using property taxes to pay for schools.
“The local school boards will no longer be of any concern to us.
I’ve just received word that the Bernie has dissolved the local control
permanently. The last remnants of semi-accountability have been swept
away.”
“That’s impossible! How will Bernie maintain control
without the school boards?”
“The regional DOE staffers now have direct control over
schools. Fear will keep the local schools in line. Fear of loss of funding.”
+1
Use of AppropriateForce ChokeHuh. I wonder why nobody has thought of this before!
I wonder where the most lavishly-funded schools in America are… hmm?
Busing 2.0, dump money, ignore parents/parenting, and pretend outcomes will improve.
Fastest way to turn the suburbs Red again: “We are going to take education dollars away from your kids and give them to the impoverished areas where, as always, the money will be wasted on teachers who can’t teach and kids who don’t want to learn.”
They already do that in NJ.
Carranza looks like the perfect match for DeBlasio. He is a progressive and impervious to reality.
Yesterday – helped to put up new siding and trim as the community pool association building. Also did some electrical work, a little plumbing, and a lot of hauling. I feel beat. Raining today – but that still won’t stop the fun. My neighbor is a maniac, flitting from one project to another but the pool will be opening on time.
Dammit.
Whenever I see a EF or LH comment, I run it through as if it’s an accidental sock post by the other. Has made more than one chuckle in the past.
We need common sense account management to prevent things like this.
Two – no, three! – factor authentication!
Good for you EF. You’d think LH could help with some of that.

More about Bernie’s “Thurgood Marshall Plan”
Sanders also called for a complete ban on for-profit charter schools and a moratorium on the funding of all public charter school expansion until a national audit on the schools has been completed. Sanders will also promise to halt the use of public funds to underwrite all new charter schools if he is elected president.
His call to rein in charter schools was lauded by Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers. In a statement to CNN, she called the proposal “vitally important” and said that it would provide real checks and balances for the charter school system.
“For the last several decades the unregulated growth of private charter schools has siphoned off money from public schools, with little protection against fraud, and little attention paid to equity or quality when it comes to educating kids,” Weingarten wrote. “The Senator’s plan takes tangible steps toward making the charter school industry accountable to parents and the public.”
If Randi Weingarten likes it, it must be good.
I wonder if they will ever get around to teaching about the Constitutional limits on the extent of Presidential authority, in their cloud-cuckoo education Xanadu. It doesn’t matter. Once we get rid of that authoritarian bastard Trump, it’ll be smooth sailing for democracy.
That simply isn’t true. I get that the union isn’t going to be happy. But they absolutely measure outcomes… and overall charters do better.
I like the use of “for profit” as a boogie man as well. They used this in California to shut down the most successful of charter schools – because the guy running the school bought the building and leased it to the charter school – making a profit!! Evil! We covered this at TOS, so many of you probably remember. The kids were the most at risk, were doing really well, and the cost to the school system was quite a bit less per student. But PROFIT!!! Therefore evil! They actually called it fraud and came after him – apparently without a sense of irony that all those administrators and fat construction contracts the public school system was supporting were costing more than this company’s evil “profit” ever dreamed of.
“National Audit”. What an idiot.
Crusaders against charter schools are pure evil. They are plantation masters sending out bounty hunters for fugitive slaves trying to escape. In many of these shithole neighborhoods, the charter school is the only place teaching anything and the only place where a kid can go to actually learn anything. The “for profit” argument is a canard; they just can’t have those kids succeeding and leaving the ghetto. They’d lose far too many opportunities for graft if the inner city “schools” started shutting down/being forced to compete.
I like the use of “for profit” as a boogie man as well.
My favorite was the “unaccountable” smear.
Because we all know how “accountable” teachers and administrators are in the legitimate public school system.
We need common sense Ukraine control.
Sure,
TulpaHillary.I’m sitting upstairs yesterday, and I hear a kind of thump from outside. I call downstairs, the wife says she heard it but thought it was me. Then I look out side, and there’s a cloud of smoke rising off the neighbor’s field. I think, “fun with blackpowder? eh, whatever.” Then the wife, who is Facebook friends with the neighbor’s wife, says, “She says they’re sorry, they should have warned us, it’s a gender reveal party.”
So much wrong with this story.
– An organized party to disclose the
gendersex of a baby.– The act of disclosing the sex of said baby apparently involves blowing up something blue or pink.
– The neighbor wife is so welded to Facebook that she’s responding to P.M.s while she’s at a party, in a field, where things are being blown up.
That last one is just pathetic. We really are headed to “Nosedive” from Black Mirror.
Meh. Kids are the worst and all that, but I don’t care what people do to entertain themselves as long as it doesn’t affect me.
I freely admit I’m showing a lot of “stupid kids get off my lawn” here. In my defense, they are kids (relatively), and stupid (subjectively), although not on my lawn.
So you’re saying you didn’t return fire?
Pretty light crowd this morning, but those that are here can enjoy Slutty Sunday.

Got that everyone? Meritocracy and work ethic are racist. So we’re headed to a fusion of Brave New World, 1984 with a heaping dose of Harrison Bergeron thrown in for good measure. Gulag Archipelago may just be the cherry on top.
Holy shit how many administrative departments do they have in their DOE?
You couldn’t pay me enough to work in that no-shit toxic environment. Not that they would hire me.
And the brave Zoolander leads the charge
What’s the prediction for the Dark Phoenix movie? Good or bad?
I’m predicting bad. Large amount of reshoots, delays in theatrical release, and this being one of the last X-Men movies done by Fox (Age of Apocalypse was… not good).
Fox is now a Disney subsidiary. They may let them keep the studio name on the movies when they enter the MCU.
I’m aware, and while they may let them keep the Fox name, I think the trailer for Far From Home is setting up the explanation for how they’re going to blend in the Fox (X-Men/Deadpool) movies into the MCU. I also think it’s more likely that they’ll throw the Marvel logo in front of any future movie with a mutant without the name of Deadpool.
I think the alternate dimension stuff in the trailer is a ruse, it is Mysterio after all.
That’s another possibility, but it’s Nick saying it. I would hope he’s at least verified there’s other worlds before parroting it back. The trying to hide Mysterio as a villain is just crazy to me. I do appreciate that they kept the fishbowl helmet though.
Well, Endgame shows there are other dimensions, but I don’t think that will actually be what’s going on in Far From Home (That just sounds like it should be a movie about a dog and cat voiced by celebrities searching for the family that lost them)
Who? Another comic book movie with exactly the same plot and exactly the same formula as every other comic book movie?
Y’all go see it and let me know how it is.
^^This.
I gave up after the first 17*.
*Kidding. I haven’t watched one in decades.
Dark Phoenix was an excellent storyline, but it takes too much time to set up, which is why it keeps getting shittily done in every third X-men movie or so.
Old guy music is good.
Wrong. It’s excellent! ??
But it ain’t ‘old guy’
Meritocracy and work ethic are racist.
I saw some clip of Nancy Pelosi talking about how “concerning” Republikkkinz’ obsession with “merit” is.
I wonder how she’d respond if I looked her in the eye and told her merit had nothing to do with her current position and status, and that she is merely the beneficiary of random gender-based affirmative action.

Of course, grabbers will herald this as something that needs to happen in the US, in spite of Constitutionally guaranteed natural rights. But fuck that. Why not just dispense with separated government altogether and put every single policy decision up to a Twitter plebiscite?
What a pathetic decision by the supposedly freedom loving Swiss public.
We might have to spend 30 seconds online getting a visa to go to Germany! (probably still wouldn’t have happened)
Plus: gunz r bad mmmmkay?
The next war in Europe is going to be a civilian bloodbath.
Sounds like a good time to invade that place.
Or the UN. That’s what it’s there for.
In fact, Mueller’s report identifies multiple examples of conduct satisfying all the elements of obstruction of justice, and undoubtedly any person who is not the president of the United States would be indicted based on such evidence.
— Justin Amash (@justinamash) May 18, 2019
I’d say this is more of an indictment of the current state of the American legal system than an indicator about Trump’s fitness for public office.
I like many of Amash’s opinions; he’s one of the more libertarian-ish congress-critters. But I have to admit I’m flummoxed by this.
If the Dems take the bait, it would be colossally stupid for them. The Clinton impeachment fiasco was pointless and almost wholly politically negative for the Pachyderms.
Right at this moment, sad to say, I think Biden would probably win. However, those odds flip if the Jackasses lose their shit and impeach.
Apparently he has coownership of a Chinese tool manufacturer that sells here. I’d imagine he doesn’t care much for the tariffs.
This was brought up last night, and I maintain, ok well then charge him already I am sick and tired of hearing about it and think the only reason most congress douches even bring up Trump is to fund raise from the TDS crowd. But I woke up this morning thinking about the whole “any person who is not president” would be indicted. I have been hearing from Pelosi, Schumer Harris, on and on and on that nobody is above the law blah blah blah. Ok then, impeach Trump I don’t give a fuck but lets also even out the laws. Make congress open to FOIA. We want to know what you assholes are emailing each other and what donors are asking for. Open congress up to liable. The days of just accusing someone of gang rape and not being liable should be over. Why are they above the law? Let’s see their taxes. How do many of them become millionaires within years of taking office? How much gov money has Nancy Pelosi funneled to her daughters non profits? On and on Congress has rights and protections the great unwashed do not have. Even it out or STFU. I am sure there are more examples but I just finished breakfast.
The whole point of this push is to distract Orange from doing his job. Amash is no different in that regard.
I’m reading the Mueller report now, and it does make a case for obstruction. But if I were on a jury, I wouldn’t convict. First, there was no underlying crime. Apparently according to the law, there need not be an underlying crime for obstruction to occur, but the law is an ass. Second, much of the so called obstruction was stuff in the President’s constitutional power, like firing cabinet members or the pardon power. Third, it’s simply wrong to come up with this bullshit investigation into Russia, and then try to entrap the President for obstruction.
That is what bugs me. Somebody investigates you for something that turns out to be completely legal. During that investigation you do a bunch of perfectly legal stuff. And they throw you in jail for obstruction.
That doesn’t sit right with me.
How much Trump’s “obstructionist” activity took place after an honest prosecutor would have closed the investigation because the allegations were transparently BS?
Most of it is my guess.
If I were on a jury… I would approve any and all measures taken by Pres. Trump to arrest the entire leadership of the FBI and the CIA and send them to Guantanamo Bay. That’s how a coup d’état should be dealt with.
He provided millions of pages of requested documents. All requested as a matter of fact and allowed everyone requested to testify to do so even when it was within his power to deny them to testify.
They are trying to say he obstructed by verbally bitching about the I investigation.
Let the Dems impeach him. It will only come out in his favor.
I’m sitting here, chatting with you fine folks and watching the birds out my office window. Within 5 minutes we’ve had Baltimore Orioles, a Swainson’s Thrush, Goldfinches, Grackles (I wish these pigs would go away) a Brown Thrasher, and four different species of sparrow all at the same time. I really like sparrows. They are fun to watch, and they can be difficult to identify, so that appeals to the detective in me.
Yesterday, I had to rescue a Clay-colored Sparrow from himself.
GAY
This winter I saw a shrike swoop in, grab a sparrow, kill it, and carry it away. It all went down about 20 feet out my window. How’s that?!11!?!

Bird watching is totally GAY and for fags.
Louisiana is a bird watcher’s paradise. I probably see three dozen species on a half hour canoe trip down the bayou.
That includes ibises, herons, kingfishers, various ducks, grebes along with the usual sparrows, tits, cardinals, blue birds and bluejays. Bonus: I regularly see the most unusual bird in NA, the Anhinga.
Oh, I left out the raptors. Take your pick, we got ’em. I saw half a dozen Mississippi kites hunting together a few days ago. Amazingly agile on the wing. Just amazing.
Yeah, water, trees, and warm makes for a birders paradise. We do OK up here in the warm weather months, especially during spring and fall migration, but it’s slim picking for birds during the winter.
Shouldn’t you be watching out for alligators?
Meh, they leave you alone unless you are fishing. They pop up every now and then and then disappear.
Different story if you are casting bait. they hang around and wait for you. to hook something. Good luck getting that bass in the boat.
Some robins set up a nest in one of my rhododendrons. Their eggs hatched and I saw two chicks. The nest is now empty. The chicks were there long enough to leave the nest, so I don’t think a predator got them.
” we’ve had Baltimore Orioles”
I saw some of those driving down Pratt Street the other day. Oh wait, those were just fans…

As Vice President Mike Pence gave the Saturday morning commencement address at Taylor University — a Christian school in Pence’s home state of Indiana — dozens of graduating seniors and faculty walked out in protest.
The small demonstration came after Taylor students and members of the surrounding Upland, Indiana, community started an online petition to bar Pence from giving the address, citing concerns that it could be construed as an endorsement of President Donald Trump’s policies. Many of those who remained at the ceremony but objected to Pence’s presence sported buttons that declared, “I am Taylor Too,” which intended to show that the university houses a multitude of viewpoints in contrast to those held by the administration.
Close to 10,000 people signed the Change.org petition, although only a fraction of the roughly 500 graduating students actually ended up walking out of the speech. Still, the demonstration marked a rare instance in which a member of the Trump administration was rebuffed in what many considered to be friendly territory.
The inheritors of the legacy of Nathan Hale.
“although only a fraction of the roughly 500 graduating students actually ended up walking out of the speech”
I get what they’re saying, but this is meaningless. Did all of them walk out? If not, it’s still a fraction. Actually, even if all of them did walk out, it’s 1/1, so… a fraction.
/math pet peeve
Probably intentional.
/Newsweek
I have never understood the point of commencement addresses. Hey, stand in the sun for an hour while some asshole lectures you on irrelevant BS. Why anyone attends those things is beyond me.
Not to forgot hey pay $300 for an outfit you’ll never wear again.
My son is graduating high school and is adamant to not sit through a 2 hour, 600 names just to get a piece of paper for a school that he had nary an interest in until 6 months ago.
I approved and he will just get it in the mail.
Walked out or woked out?
Did all of them walk out? If not, it’s still a fraction.
What if the crowd had been decimated? Would that have been better?
Speaking of annoying logical fallacies and absurd arguments-
I saw a(nother) article about the gender wage gap(!) a day or two ago. They claimed GDP would be boosted by [insert fantastic number] if women were made equal in the work force.
It occurred to me that such a claim is largely equivalent to this:
Steve Young was a left-handed quarterback (If I recall correctly). He had a stellar career in the NFL. If we snatched some random left-handed schmoe off the sidewalk and put him on an NFL team, he would have a stellar career. Because magic.
Every dollar not paid to an employee goes straight into the Scrooge McDuck vault.
Glossing over the fact that the wage gap has been proven false so many times it’s at the level of the flat Earth theory.
From each according to xis ability…
Anyone who gives credence to the wage gap nonsense can be safely ignored.

Went to Costco yesterday afternoon cause it was pissing rain and kids were ensconced in front of the tube. Picked up a 1.75 of Kirkland Irish Whiskey for 27 bucks. God bless America. Also picked up a whole duck. I haven’t cooked duck since the last time I hunted them, which unfortunately was 20 years ago. Never cooked a farm raised bird. Any particularly good recipes, besides of course just roasting with butter, salt and pepper?
All I know is to score it to render out as much fat as possible.
If you have a smoker, smoked duck is the absolute shiznit.
In fact, I think I’ll have some for dinner.
You left out the bacon. Wrap that quacker in bacon before roasting or smoking. I typically filet the breasts out and wrap them in bacon before roasting over coals.
Thanks guys. Yes, this one looks quite a bit fatter (obviously) than wild birds. Unfortunately don’t have a smoker, but have been eying them at Costco as well.
You……dont…….have……a….smoker……?
I can’t even……
https://www.wired.com/story/some-us-cities-moving-real-time-facial-surveillance/
Uh, um, perhaps the Constitution prevents the use of the technology. Ever think of that assholes?
Does it?
I value my privacy as much as the next healthy male with an internet connection, but “private” is pretty incompatible with being “in pubic.” How would this be different than stationing a cop on every corner with a book of mugshots?
With facial recognition I would say that such a system is not just comparing face in a public venue to a set of obtained photos [mug shots], but is actively gathering every face and adding it to a database.
In your scenario, there is most likely a valid reason that police are comparing faces, in AI assisted facial recognition, it is capturing all faces for unknown reason without regards to innocence.
Yea, having facial recognition cameras on every corner has the potential to create a log of where every single person has been throughout the day. Having cops walking the streets looking for one particular suspect does not have that dangerous potential.
After the NSA fiasco, it’s going to be a looooong time before I accept any excuses for why the government should be given more expansive surveillance powers.
TERRORIST!!!!
/sarc (to make sure our betters understand)
Oh I’m not saying that I like the idea, or that it won’t be abused. I’m just saying I don’t see where in the constitution it’s prohibited.
How I would abuse this if I were a cop:
I pull a guy over to do a random stop and search. When challenged on it I claim that my bodycam ID’d the guy as being a parole violating child molester.
Double bonus points for doing it to someone that won’t show ID.
Random stops and searches are not unconstitutional?
Those are already happening. This just adds another pretext to “smelled marijuana,” “furtive movement” “object near waistband” and “driving the speed limit.”
My thoughts on it are they are searching you against a a list of suspects in a crime. Why should being in public automatically make you a suspect? They have no right to randomly search anybody. They need a reason to search you whether you are in public or not.
Yeah, I have a feeling the government is going to win this battle.
Unless they really can’t figure out a way to make the technology not racist.
Or this gem from Better off Ted

So they spent money on something they supposedly aren’t using? Who got disciplined and/or fired for that?
“We’re not using it. ??”
“…as far as you know.”
I suspect your neighborhood is the same as mine: we already damned-well know who’s committing the crime, the same 10,000 guys over and over; cameras, constitutional or otherwise, won’t move the needle on crime. We can’t lock them up in any volume that is effective; there is apparently no punishment or system that will dissuade people that breaking into houses and cars to steal stuff to sell for dope money . . . ’tis the normal way to live. Breaking into houses is actually one of the normal ways to die around here, and yet the reservoir of offenders remains full, utterly bottomless.
There is a fraction of folk that are immutably broken. No amount of policing can change that. I will carry on peacefully, minding my own business on my own property, for as long as they will let me.
I get called to break ins almost every day here. Funny enough, even here in SF, where there is a property crime fiesta going on, I rarely see home break ins. There are tons of car window smash ins and lots of thieves getting into common areas and storage areas of larger buildings to steal bikes and whatnot. I’ll see even front gate break ins as there are lots of tunnel entrance homes here, but rarely into the house itself.
Going into the house might tip the crime from a misdemeanor to a felony.
That is the reason why. They actually consider that a crime here and will punish it. That, and the fact that even here there are tons of people with firearms that make that a much more risky proposition. Breaking into a common area of a condo or apartment building will get you a couple nights at Bryant Street at most. Almost all of the home break ins I have seen have happened during the day, and they likely rang the doorbell first to make sure no one was home.
“…perhaps the Constitution prevents the use of the technology.”
Only with regards to private ownership of guns. That is totally different.
More than a necessity many SE Asians wear breathing masks as a fad it seems to me. How long before such a fad hits here?
Already has out here
Really? I did not know that. I know LA is in a kind of bowl and smog used to be bad there but I thought that problem had mostly gone away.
BTW, those paper masks with the rubber bands are a cargo cult item. They are useless.
Much like the tiger penis, it is a placebo.
There are tons of SE Asians here and yes masks are quite common to see. If I go twenty blocks up to the Asian shopping area, I will see at least a few. It’s not for the air quality, it’s a germ thing.
A germ thing? Good Lord. They are huffing warm, moist air on that material all day long. They have a damned Petri dish strapped to their snout. How many times per day do they touch doorknobs, grocery cart handles and steering wheels then reach under the mask and scratch or pick their nose?
Oh, now I get it. I had it backwards. I thought they were trying to keep germs OUT of their respiratory tract.
I haven’t got a certain answer if it is to keep germs out or to keep them in. It’s one of those though. The air quality here is generally fantastic for a city. There is an almost constant northwest breeze from the Pacific.
According to a mask-wearing woman on a plane I sat next, to, it is to keep germs from getting in. She told me she gets sick easily and didn’t want to be sick for a wedding she was attending so she was wearing the mask as a precaution.
Clown masks. I will go with a clown mask.
RACIST!
“Uh, um, perhaps the Constitution prevents the use of the technology. Ever think of that assholes?”
Pretty sure the new FYTW clause of the Constitution fixed that little problem.
Surprised no one took the bait about cold brew coffee. Which I brew myself, since I think it tastes better than heat brewed. And I can make a batch and be done making coffee for a week plus.
@me too
I meant to take the bait but started reading and forgot.
OFFS.
You hear about these “Goliath sues David” lawsuits every so often. While I sympathize (usually) with the little guy, the unpleasant truth is the companies have to or they risk losing control of their property. IANAL
I find myself sympathizing with the little guy less and less, mostly because such stories get framed as “how dare those people who have enough money to make me jealous have rights too”.
For 50 years I’ve heard theft rationalized, particularly (as a grocer’s son) shoplifting. Somehow the value of a firm or its income justify petty theft. Conversely, I correct every trivial commercial miscue, even over-paid change: I don’t want a cent that isn’t mine.
Relativism, situational ethics, and the other post-modernist BS are destroying civilization. Any three-year-old understands property rights, but somehow we raise each generation with less understanding than the last. The prospects for enduring liberty, much less any libertarian moment, are eroding on this same arc.
C’mon Don, a little optimism is in order. ‘Those darned kids today’ have been destroying society for thousands of years. They grow up…most of them. As you pointed out there are some that are irrevocably broken, but most of them snap out of it.
Give ’em a little time. They will come around.
Liberty, as much we can expect, seems to exist inside a homeostatic system.
We’ve had this conversation before, of course. I’m just expressing exasperation, not decrying the youth, in the same way that others are in charge of deciding who has a punchable face; it’s a piece that’s disappointing, maybe not epic.
I will argue that there are people who argue that petty theft is defensible in a way that didn’t much exist in our childhood: those thieves knew they were wrong.
I had a former roommate of mine tell me, in all seriousness, “Steal from corporations not people. Never steal from people, only corporations.”
Something I’ll never buy, but that is totally unenforceable.
This is pretty clear infringement. They didn’t create the wonder woman character and they are using it to make money. It’s like Taylor Swift using someone selling mugs with her lyrics on them. Not theirs to profit from.
If Wonder Woman’s attire were highly differentiated. But it’s a motiff that existed before Wonder Woman dressed like that. It would be like DC stopping everyone using a knight character because they own Shining Knight. But, because it’s a derivitve idea in it’s own Dirk the Daring can look almost identical.
Surprised all the commentators here are in favor of a government created and enforced monopoly in IP, especially when defending derivative works rather than exact copies.
Is it the tiara? I’m not sufficiently versed in comic book heroines enough to know whether WW is the only one who wears one.
She’s a princess so the tiara is okay.
Is the jackass in the back supposed to be Schumer?
Too flat.
Here’s her nemesis: https://i.imgflip.com/31cya4.jpg

Soon to be lunch, with protection. They are about 1 lb each.
Heh. Another photo of Sean’s pistol with props.
Acktually, those are some pretty nice looking props.
?
You had to shoot it? Talk about some fresh beef.
Aged is better. He shot them last week.
*Last night wife took an ambien. She fell asleep in front of the TV so I got her up and escorted her to bed. She never opened her eyes but was just awake enough to walk on her own. Just as I was tucking her in she said….
“I’m hungry”
Damned pill munchies.
“Lie down, you will be asleep again before you hit the pillow. I promise I will cook for you in the morning.”
Thin, aged ribeye, an over-medium egg in the hole, half of a fresh sliced tomato with salt, pepper and sweet basil, buttermilk biscuit – half with tons of butter and seedless blackberry jelly the other half with brown pepper gravy and an extra large mug of dark roast coffee.
I don’t know for certain which I enjoyed more…the cooking or the eating. I know which part she enjoyed the most. She is snoozing on the couch now and I am about to join her.
I biked up to a local burrito place and had some nice breakfast tacos with bacon, chorizo, potato, egg, cheese, and hot salsa.
Nice. Almost 1/3 cap, which is the best part.
I’m off to spend a few hours with my mom for a belated mother’s day (She was on her way back from Mayo last Sunday) and I’m going to also change the thermostat on their Trailblazer.
+1000 best-son point!
Have a glorious Sunday, Glibs!
She never opened her eyes but was just awake enough to walk on her own
How are things at your house: ribs mending? I think I remember more than one crash lately?
Oh, geez. Thanks for asking. Hers healed a lot faster than mine. I am about three weeks out of any perception of the pain. Mine seemed to take forever to heal. As best as I could tell she cracked two, me three and she was back to normal a month before I was.
Cracked ribs are a mean-ass beeotch.
I had that once when I was in my 20s. It does hurt a lot for a while.
You know what I like on a Sunday morning? Sidebars. There’s nothing better than a good weekend sidebar.
I’m trashed and I don’t know why. Cool and wet today, I’m going to take advantage of it and do nothing.
* make her breakfast
* eyeball cats eyeballing birds

Just completed a 5 load laundry operation. Wife is making breakfast; leftover pork chop, leftover steak, leftover mash potatoes fried, bacon, eggs. I’m gonna hit the liquor store and grab some brews.
Chilly and drizzly here in Long Beach. Sofa surfing and Netflix. Meeting with some friends for cocktails and dinner later. Relaxing.
Call your buddy among TPTB and have him schedule the horoscope.
Working on it.
Got up, made breakfast. Walked to the deli to get some 24oz cans of Pacifico Clara. 4 mile walk, there and back. Freaking hot outside. Drinking some beer thinking about what to make for lunch.
84F in Balmer and 64% humidity. It really feels hotter than that, I had to turn the AC on.
58 and raining. In Southern California.
WTF happened.
Reading a post from Suthern and all of a sudden there is overlay about the website in general and then I get switched to the next thread about horoscopes.
