Redemption Edition as Serious Play Begins
As the season rounds the first corner, a few true scrums have been had, blemishes have arisen, and toldjasos have begun to fill the inboxes of alumni everywhere. Most years have slow starts: you can’t laugh at someone for losing until they at least put their season on the line and play a competent school. So we have finally begun in earnest: Week Four was most yummy and delivered even more yucks than I could have hoped for.
Week Four Most OverRated Football Program Results
1 Utah, most obviously overrated, lost to unrated USC
2 Cal survived a trip to Ole Miss
3 Iowa was consumed by one of those marching band scandals
4 Washington State handled winless UCLA
5 Florida filleted hopeless Tennessee
5 Notre Dame scored one whole touchdown that wasn’t a gift from Georgia
5 UCF was outsmarted, outworked, and eventually edged at Pitt
5 Georgia made the biggest statement of the year over Notre Dame
9 Clemson destroyed former directional school Charlotte
9 Oklahoma was idle
11 Oregon had few problems with Stanford
11 Auburn managed a capable Texas A&M on the road
11 Boise State shot down Air Force
14 Texas awoke and survived Oklahoma State in Austin
So, we now mount that trophy on the wall as our #1 biggest takedown of the year, the largest pelt taken, the silliest ranking debunked: Utah. Notre Dame sold off although they lost to a highly ranked Georgia, but that’s the way it is with tulip bulb mania.
In other news,UCF lost at Pitt (our interesting team from last week) and moves from my miss column to my hit parade; I had said they seemed to be doing okay, but, suddenly, my initial disgust was proven right. Michigan was humiliated by Wisconsin, so I’m also overturning my earlier miss on them. Washington State is completely unranked now, so I’m moving them to my win column as well.
Off my radar, newly ranked TCU promptly lost to cross-Plex rival SMU, but I had recorded no opinion on either heretofore. In summation, we add four pelts to the wall, at least a couple of which are fine specimens.
Next week conference play now begins in all earnestness, and we’ll see who survives the grind and who is forged in fire. Here’s my latest ranking of puff toads.
Newest Week N + 1 Most OverRated Football Programs
1 Cal could barely hang with terrible Ole Miss; they are the newest king of hype
2 Iowa was recently added to the list but yet to disappoint
2 Virginia joins our list; this fever shall pass
4 Boise St just isn’t proving anything this year
5 Florida has yet to be disrobed
6 Clemson must run the table since they’re ranked numero uno
6 Georgia has made the best statement against being overrated
8 Texas has a comfy few weeks until the Red River rivalry resumes
8 Auburn is barely overrated if at all
10 Oregon is living up to the hype and might well not be overrated
11 Oklahoma is solid and might well not be overrated at all
So how has our year gone so far?
Year to Date Hides on the Wall Ratings
1 Utah lost to an unrated USC
2 Stanford was revealed by USC
2 Syracuse was unranked after Maryland
2 UCF was edged by unranked Pitt
5 Iowa State was dethroned before their decent showing against Iowa
5 Michigan State fell out of the ratings, so I was right after all
7 Texas probably over-paid for losing to titan LSU
7 Texas A&M probably over-paid for losing to titans Clemson and Auburn
9 Washington St is now unranked after becoming lowly UCLA’s first win
9 Florida was ranked down after silly pre-season enthusiasm (but are back up now!)
11 Michigan was blown out by Wisconsin
Year to Date It-Would-Seem Blown Calls Because They’re Doing Okay
1 LSU
2 UCF is now a skin on the wall after Pitt
3 Michigan no longer a blown call because Wisconsin
4 Washington State no longer a blown call because UCLA
So closes another week.

Disclosure of sources of bias: your writer has attended the University of Tennessee, Memphis State and the University of Memphis, Christian Brothers College . . . and he sleeps with an alumna of Georgia whose parents met at Washington State . . . and his son went to Houston . . . and he never met anyone from TCU he didn’t like . . . and he irrationally hates Notre Dame, UCF, Clemson, and Notre Dame.
First? I don’t even watch the sportsball, unless it’s wifey’s.
not even TCU vs SMU ?!!11??
I couldn’t give a shit about sports. Or, colleges.
You don’t watch any sports?
Does Foxy boxing count?
No, unless I’m watching OU play with wifey. Even then…
OK, I’ll watch the very occasional UFC bout, but even that is rare, as I don’t follow it at all. That would be just about the only sport I watch, and I worked for the Stars for 3.5 years.
Between that and your culinary likes, you and UCS may have been separated at birth.
I did try to warn you.
baseball has at least four kinds of gloves
Here’s how I score that one:
* no TCU girl has been able to live with me for more than 20 years
* no SMU girl has been able to live with me for more than 20 weeks
it would seem the SMU lasses are slightly smarter
I consider myself much like water, or a bogart, in that regard: I take on the form needed. If she likes SMU, I’ll play along–“Yay, ‘Stangs!”
If she like an Oklahoma team, I can do that, too.
I’m close behind you. I don’t know a thing about college sports.
I like pro sports but yeah completely ignorant of college stuff.
I probably have less interest in sports than Sir Digby. One of the great things about attending college at UTEP in the early 1980’s was the football team was a very minor presence on campus. For a school where the Texas state flag was on the breeze every day* that is a rare environment.
* People who state that El Paso is in Texas definitely have never spent much time there.
you forgot Miami.
they were ranked by someone?
I’m trashing the AP poll until the playoff committee meets
By some
https://247sports.com/college/miami/Article/Miami-Hurricanes-Football-viewed-as-a-top-15-team-in-2019-by-college-football-expert-132978159/
Based on narrowly losing to a supposedly great florida team in a terribly played early game, people were talking them up. Losing to mediocre-at-best UNC and then playing really, really weakly against Central Michigan wiped that out.
FWIW, they didn’t get a single vote in the first 2091 AP poll.
oops, I was dead wrong: they go 70 votes, but that’s not enough to make the top 25
You’ve got the 2091 polls? do you have access to any other future polls?
Yeah… 2091 is useless for me. Get me the rest of this year and next year… that, I could use!
They shouldn’t have. But if they had not played like a pickup team in that first game, they would have beaten Florida fairly easily. (among other things, penalties were 11-1 at one point)
And if that had happened, I guarantee they would have been immediately pimped as playoff contenders. People are really, really irrational about big-name programs.
This is interesting even though I don’t routinely watch the NFL’s semi-pro league.
LOL
I do not get into college ball. I did, my freshman and sophomore years of college at BYU. That was awesomely awesome. My actual alma mater, University of Missouri at Kansas City, is a commuter and professional school, so sports are way down on their priority list. I mean “’Roos.” Really? Ain’t nobody got time for that.
As for BYU, I have very little loyalty because I have no interest. I have better things to do on Saturday than look for and watch a game in a rinky-dink conference of a school I did not graduate from.
I live between KU Jayhawks and MU Tigers, mostly on the KU side of things. I do not give a shit about either.
I do not even have a backup NFL team I want to root for. Hi and bye, Chiefs.
But…but…muscular young men in tight pants! Bending over !!! What’s not to love?
Isn’t that why anyone watches?
Things I saw today:
1. Kamala Harris on Anderson Cooper in long format interview. Both agree that using your office for “personal gain” in the form of political gain is illegal. Say investigating a political rival is reason for Barr to go as well. And she says Rudy should be disbarred and anyone at state dept who worked with him should resign or be fired. Not a syllable about how this set of standards might apply to Obama administration actions.
2. Big document dump from Ukraine purports to show that American lawyers for the Ukrainian company that supposedly wasn’t under investigation when Biden got the prosecutor fired met with said prosecutor and apologized for spreading lies about him via US officials.
3. Rumor is that “corrupt prosecutor” was a disinformation campaign out of the CIA
4. Rumor is that the “whistleblower” is actually a confidant of Brennan and was specifically placed to spy on administration for this very purpose.
5. Schiff actually looked reasonably competent today. They have a new strategy – take the “Trump pressured Ukraine to ‘manufacture dirt’ on Biden” as an obvious given fact, and focus on minute details of secretarial functions in order to cast things as a cover-up. So the debate is to be moved over to details of a supposed cover up instead of debating anything about phone calls and Biden’s activity.
I’m sure there was a lot more, but there was so much it keeps getting pushed off the other end of the table as more and more gets piled on.
This is the longest break we’ve had since Rushin’ Colushion! They’ve got him this time for sure!
Where did you read the document dump?
The Hill had it, among others. I didn’t read any of the actual documents yet… just the representations. John Solomon apparently is connected and gets the dish.
https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/463307-solomon-these-once-secret-memos-cast-doubt-on-joe-bidens-ukraine-story
I thought that was where the docs were, but I don’t see them. Google said look here:
https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2019/09/26/former-ukranian-prosecutor-viktor-shokin-sworn-affidavit-outlining-joe-biden-shakedown/
More from that fallout…. Mitt Romney’s national security adviser is also on the board of Burisima. Might help explain Romney’s strong denunciation of Trump on Ukraine.
So, Kerry’s kid, Biden’s kid, Romney’s former Natl security Adviser… that’s a lot of folks who are highly connected to US politics for a Ukrainian company to have on their board.
Honk honk!
What a shitshow. At some point you’d think the MSM would be worn out from all the spinning they have to do to keep on top of this shit.
Democracy Dies In Ukrainian Board Rooms
I’ll bet a good number of news outlets have no idea and didn’t think to ask.
Watching Anderson Cooper interviewing a democrat Senator who says that “using government authority to investigate political opponents is criminal” and having him not ask anything at all about how that might apply to the Obama administration and the Russia investigation was…
Well, I was gonna say painful… but it was more… just… well, expected.
They had a pretty long list of things that they thought were unconscionable for any US citizen, let alone politician. Every one of those things were things that the Obama/Biden administration did x 1000.
Solomon’s piece is more than I’ve seen in any one place before.
Other thing I saw today. NFL replay on pass interference is a joke.
Obvious pass interference not called. Challenged.
And of course…. the ruling on the field stands.
Useless.
Worse than useless, because now it is even more arbitrary than just having a guy on the scene making a snap judgement.
The Eagles v Packers Game?
Yup.
Just had another example of useless replay. Packers caught a 7 yard pass. Looked like a trap. Play stops for injury…. we watch replay….. yup, no catch.
Absent challenge from bench, nothing happens. Instead of 2nd and 10, pack gets a gift and has 2nd and 3.
NFL, your replay system needs a little bit of work.
I can’t believe the Packers didn’t even try to run when they were at 1 yard.
I can’t believe the packers had 2 goal line turnovers.
I know. Awful
I don’t watch a lot of football but it’s interesting that the exact same thing is happening in soccer with VAR (what they call video review). It’s making the game more tedious with constant interruption and not actually catching the obvious errors the refs miss. Because what the ref says still goes. “Clear and obvious!”
That’s my beef. If you are gonna use replay, you gotta be competent.
In college football I see it a lot – you watch the replay along with the guy reviewing it and he still gets it wrong. That should be impossible. But if you still have disagreements after replay – maybe don’t use replay. It just makes fanatics think there’s some sort of fix in on the game.
As I understand it, the replay doesn’t mean shit unless the evidence that the ref was wrong is “clear and obvious”. And apparently, the VAR refs are really reluctant to contradict the ref on the field.
This state of affairs exists because the head refs don’t want to give up their power.
Yeah. If you are going to have that much reliance on the Refs, then don’t use replays
Well, What a way for that game to end
Despite Knowing they were overrated, That loss to USC borkw my heart. Just like they do every year.
Stanford or Utah?
USC is a solid middle second twenty team and undid the hype on both that I had called very early on.
In fairness, the Utah game was a pick-em, but it’s not my fault that the AP had Utah tenth.
The Utah Game. Utah always let’s me down, and I know they are overrated (they always get overrated at the beginning of the year)
People are really, really irrational about big-name programs.
We have a winner, ladies and gentlemen.
Which bullshit exception allowed Cal to fly to Ole Miss for the game?
https://oag.ca.gov/ab1887
Clause FYTW
maybe a pre-existing contract ?
That is an excellent question.
Like bans on non-essential travel, WTF are CA employees traveling out of state in the first place?
Cops sometimes have to go out of state for extraditions and the rare investigation. Beyond that, it’s all junkets as far as I can tell.
My brother worked in state IT during such a frugality wave and he’d mention about how it was hurting them by not being able to attend user group conferences and such, unless it was held instate. I just nodded my head.
Why don’t y’all have a proper playoff at the end of the season?
in college football ?
Yes.
We have one here. And while Canadian football sucks, at least we know who won at the end of the season.
I’m no fan of single-game playoffs, but the four team bracket hasn’t overlooked anyone or delivered any surprises so far.
I guess my issue is the bracket based on sketchy rankings and not head to head competition.
Like, take the top team out of each conference, plus wild cards to make 16, then a serious playoff.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Football_Playoff#Appearances
The history doesn’t indicate anyone being overlooked to me; sound off if you notice something.
One thing that is different about NCAA football from other leagues and other sports is the legacy of immense space. Conferences were always regional, and national championships were generally mythical or arguable until 1999; a few consensus champions had been agreed, but it was never important, and in some years several teams claimed to be best. The facade is that we’re dealing with student athletes in a very, very tough game, and guesses are all that can be reasonably had after the few games they can be expected to survive.
The statistics part of me could never care because there isn’t even a meaningful notion to champion other than “team that won out.” The best team doesn’t always win, and the post-season team is often very different from the the regular season squad due to injury and guys going pro. Small sample size always meant that football could never be more than exhibition matches for bragging rights and an excuse to get dressed up and drink with your girl and 100,000 friends.
I thought Obama fixed that.
LOL hey guys did you know FIFA is corrupt, and I oop?
No way!
Hey, how can you say that? They’re carefully regulated by the EU!
Im glad I was sitting when you told me.

It’s a trifecta tonight!
Which one is the odd one out?
None. I’ll keep them all warm.
One!! One vampire hooker! Ah Ah Ah Ahhhh!
Two!! Two vampire hookers!! Ah Ah Ah Ahhh!
THREE!!
/and, well, you get it.
Cookies?
Wrong monster.
Get Rufus in here–he can straighten all this out.
I noticed that as soon as I clicked. Enh, I’m sure they did a duo at some point.
You would hope!
How dare you talk about Pie’s sisters that way!
Now, that is a crying shame, Chafed! Talking smack about pie when he hasn’t risen yet…er, I mean, hasn’t awakened yet.
For you Q, from the straff’s link last post
https://youtu.be/uV-wmXxY5eo
moderately nsfw
That’s what I love about my fellow Glibs. You share.
Seems like a club I’d be interested in joining.
Relocated a rubber boa out of the garage tonight. Only a little guy, about 10″ long and 1/2″ diameter at the thickest.
He was just looking for a warm place to curl up with a good book and mouse.
Check for missing pets.
That’d have to be a pretty small pet.
I’m riffing on comical drawings of snakes with like a dog they swallowed. Work with me here.
Or an elephant.
Awww…
mouse
That’s what bothers me most. Already have bait stations and traps in place.
Well, there’s no proof he actually found one, is there?
“10″ long and 1/2″ diameter at the thickest”
Some ladies prefer long and thin.
My wife is not happy at finding boas in the garage.
How about in your pants?
Apropos: https://youtu.be/u6ONiIwfLLU
I had no idea he had a solo career.
Based on the evidence from the video, I can see why.
I’m not certain but I think he only did one solo album.
I’ve got a new “pet”. I call him (her?) sink gecko. It’s a gecko that lives in my sink. Gets plenty of water, but I’m pretty sure SG will die from lack of food at some point.
Hurrah! I finally trapped Sink Gecko in between 2 plastic cups and released him back into the wild of the back lawn!
Didn’t even lose his tail.
Excellent!
Well done BP. Also, good job with the latest SNP.
Appreciated, Chafed.
And yeah, guys – happy to let the little guy go, even if he does make more insurance commercials.
Geckos live all over the house here, inside and out. One bathroom gecko is comfortable enough with me that I can place him/her on me after a shower and they don’t just jump off. They’ll explore and drink the water drops.
Less fun is when one decides to explore your face while you are asleep and you wake up with a start.
Still all in all I welcome them since they eat insects, but it would be nice if they were better housebroken.
Um… I am perfectly content living in a region where uninvited lizards don’t crawl over my face YMMV sksksks.
Agreed, dbleagle. If you live in a semi-tropical climate, it’s nice to have help. Also, they’re generally inoffensive. Weird thing is, I live in Florida, and my apartment has the fewest roaches I’ve seen since my year in New Hampshire. Just geckos and spiders…which might explain why I never see roaches.
Rhywun: Florida geckos aren’t nearly as friendly. I had Sink Gecko around for about 4 days before I was even able to trap him/her.
Oh yeah, and NYC has rats on the West Side, bedbugs Uptown…
Boas in the garage or geckos on the face. You guys and your phrasing.
Unranked Irrelevancy
Memphis bested Navy a few miles from here tonight by 12, more than twice the margin expected. At 2 – 0, they drew 42 votes; now at 3 – 0 and with Houston taking the year off, their stock will rise. They are a third twenty team, maybe a little better, but it would be funny to see them ranked.
I fear it may be a rough year for Navy fans. As long as they can beat Army…which they haven’t for three years now… : (
Digby:
“unless I’m watching OU play with wifey”
Who is OU and why is he playing with your wife?
Are you going all “Ted” on me, boy??
Fine: Unless I am watching OU play, due to wifey watching it.
Happy?!?
I’m not unhappy.
I suppose I’m glad I maybe made someone’s day….?

Other ‘Umans?
Oh come on, you have to at least mention the Wash St vs UCLA game more than that. How often in football do you get a BASKETBALL score? 67-63.
The spouse is a Bruin, and even he had to admit that was hilarious.
I handled WSU earlier in the season: their early overratedness was already called, bagged, and mounted.
Well, not their offense, apparently.
She’s going to need a much better answer in the general election.

Funny how this isn’t ever mentioned during reoccurring longings for some ideal post WWII bipartisanship collegiality.
Totally unrelated, but how is RBG feeling these days?
Probably like a very popular Skeletor. She got merch, yo. A sitting Nazgul…merch!
Can we get an overrated/underrated Glibs?
I find I’m pretty overrated, myself. So, I got that going for me…
We’re definitely cellar dwellers, you and I. But, we’re turning these franchises around.
Just like Kathleen Kennedy!
Wait……..
That’s quite intriguing
but I’d never admit so in public
Well, Skinner IS an odd fellow….
Haha, that was good. Didn’t know anyone else here was a fan of Steamed Hams edits.
My personal favorite:

… And I have like six more. I seriously fucking made a YouTube playlist of those.
No, I love Steamed Hams. I actually just love the regular scene the most.
I love any opportunity to use my Chalmers voice, a la “Aurora Borealis!”
I also find this one quite charming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUNBpeUHKXQ

OK, that one may turn me off of Steamed Hams….
I prefer whimsical to trippy in this particular venue.
You’d probably like this one then; it’s another version of the “Skinner tells the truth”:

I do like that.
Akira: I tend to bow to Playa as far as being THE Simpson’s fan on Glibs.
That said, I think I earn a strong 2nd place.
Slow down Tubby; you’re not on the Moon yet!
So, I’m “mercurial” when it comes (phrasing) to my avatars. However, I am kinda diggin this new one.
Makes me think I should be more….naughty. Kinda like an homage to Crusty, as it were.

I know what ZARDOZ would say. I’m still not sure how the husband was able to send a picture of his junk as his wife seems to be in possession of them. ‘Please can I get her number and take a picture with her?’ WTF?
“He told me he’d sent her a picture of his privates.”
Unless he’s a drill sargent…
I like this plot twist!
Probably needed to see a bill (online, I would think) to see the number he used to call.
I don’t get why people who screw around ever feel the need to tell the one person who least wants to know about it. No matter if it was a brief, drunken mistake or a full-on love affair – bury that shit deep and keep it to yourself. If you have to do something then break it off and forget it. I’m not even sure of you should bring it up if you’re in an “open relationship”. Half the time when I hear that I expect the wife is just testing him.
I’m with Nancy on this one – just don’t do it. And if you did live your life as if you didn’t.
As this is somewhat on-topic, I’mma leave this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz-mwKV-O4g
I can’t say this has much bearing on my attitude towards college sports, but, the part that it does is negative.
