Happy Friday everyone. I may be scarce in the comments. Beer thirty came early today. I’m going to the best nano-brewery in the world (IMO) for a couple, and then bringing home some growlers. Seriously, always 40 beers on tap of their own make, across several styles, any one of which can stand toe-to-toe with the best craft breweries.
Proof:
Well, let’s just jump into today’s biggest controversy with two feet: Count me among the people who think Myles Garrett’s suspension is right, but Mason Rudolph got a complete pass for continuing to instigate. If nothing else, he should sit a game for going back to the scrum after he got hit.
I think Rudy Giuliani is a scumbag, but this really is turning into a party-selective witch hunt. Somehow, the last name of Biden or Kerry makes you immune to federal investigation? Come on. Don’t piss down our backs and tell us its raining. Next they’ll want us to believe that Epstein killed himself.
Lol. The fucking Wall Street Journal ponders Warren’s tax plan as if it were real. >100% effective rates on some rich people. Wealth and capital taxes are artifacts of dying governments. They only accelerate economic decline.
LARPers protest Federalist Society event. Go back to the RenFest!
All the talk about those judges got me thinking of this song… I think my favorite part is how dated the idea the $5 a beer is expensive.
First?, I like beer.
That’s the first one of those I’ve ever got. I’m framing it and putting on the living room wall, right next to my giant Ron Paul poster and Gadsden Flag!
I’m picturing you taking a matte knife to your monitor now.
You lucky bastard.
I lie awake at night, just dreaming of getting a first. Bloody favoritism!
You have a Ron Paul poster? That’s cool!
I still have a Ron Paul yard sign. When I’m elected to Congress some day, it will be the first thing on my office wall.
I too like beer. I will be here tomorrow:

OT but are there are any plans to team up with Man Without Pants in the Florida Man extended universe?

Zicke, zacke, zicke, zacke, hoi, hoi, hoi!
Zicke, zacke, zicke, zacke, hoi, hoi, hoi!

The founders should add this to the gif collection
She gets a corner of the hot crazy matrix.
Unicorn!
Classy.
Don’t stick it in crazy.
Fake name, uber, condom.
That would be a wild ride no doubt.
As long as I never get to know her last name I think i’d be safe.
Done.
“Who is Associate Justice Kavanaugh?”
That’s gotta be the first beer run I’ve ever made and when I got back, there wasn’t at least 150 comments on Friday Afternoon Links. Was there a nuclear war when I was out? Zombie invasion? A plague? The Rapture? Oh wait, no one here would have been caught up in that last one. Aliens?
So I’m chopped liver to you?
Howdy!
Look, someone else survived it! I’m not alone!
I give you and Yusef 2 hours before you begin dreaming of having your brains eaten by a zombie.
*I’m kidding, I’m kidding. (more like an hour)
You can make a beer run in 3 minutes? Did you mean a beer run to your refrigerator?
Dude, I was gone close to 30 minutes.
But the links were only out for 5 minutes by the time you made your comment (I think – I didn’t see them go up, but they usually go up at or around 3). And as hopping as this place gets, I don’t think it’s ever made it to a rate of 30 comments per minute.
Not sure, but I typically get done with work around 4-5PM, but today I started at 7 am this morning. I make the comment at 4:02 my time, so it was a little early for me to go on a beer run. But I was gone right around 30 minutes.
You were gone?
I’m not saying it was ?s, but it was ?s.
Lol
I, for one, worship our new alien overlords.
Amazing how much Liberals and the DNC get away with on this continent.
when you are righteous you get to get away with more.
Let that guy burn for a while he’s supposed to be a professional…
HEY YUFUS!
FIFTH!
‘sup?
Beer.
I got 45 minutes until TALL CANS. But who’s counting ?
I beer down already, I stopped counting.
I don’t have tall cans, but I have one of those quart bottles of Corona Familiar. I plan on putting it in a paper bag and drinking it out on the front lawn.
I have a stack of those paper bags, just for 40 oz-ers
I see you’re in the bag for Big Paper, as the Amazon burns…
finally get to say,
Tall Cans!
Dude, I didn’t recognize you and was just about to tell Yusef that his tall cans buddy is probably dead. *Sighs in relief* this apocalypse is not nearly as bad as I feared!
Wow what a coincidence I too felt like dancing when I opened a fifth today.
I disagree about Rudolph. A fine is more than enough.
Garrett and Pouncey should pay the biggest price with the games suspension and they did. And it’s ALL on Garrett. Like it was on McSorely and Zidane. Selfish. weak-minded and thoroughly in the wrong.
The crazy part is Randall should get a suspension for his late hit but that was set aside in all the hoopla.
I have to say though, with five seconds left I don’t know why Pittsburgh was lining up for a play. I get it’s never over but it was over at that point. Just kneel and eat the loss.
Easy to say, less easy to do when the guy on the other side is yelling “Kneel before Zod, motherfuckers!”
Whether Rudolph gets fined or not, he’ll definitely go down in history
/pulls out Vaudeville cain. Yanks PBR’s neck.
The Browns sure were Blitzen.
Rudolf the red-eared Steeler
Had a very whiny pose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it blows.
All of the other Steelers
Used to cheat and flop and and cry
They never let poor Rudolf
No the secret reason why.
Then one meaningless Thursday game
Cleveland came to say
Rudolf with your ear so bright
Won’t you be my bitch tonight
Then how the Steelers loved him
And the shouted out with glee
Rudolf the Red-Eared bitch boy
You’ll go down on old Pouncey.
Even standing up for Cleveland makes me illiterate “Know the secret reason why”
and “they shouted”
Who hook !
That wasn’t what I typed.
*one single tear rolls down cheek*
The only part that bothers me a little is the Ogunjobi suspension. To me, it looked like he was trying to break up the scrum more then anything. Unfortunately, he (to my eyes) shoved Rudolph to the ground to get in there (I’ve seen it called a blindside hit). But I’m not going to go too far in his defense, and am surprised that Pouncey got three games.
Kicking someone on the ground is… not a good look.
Also, I can’t remember if it is the Pouncey brother on the Steelers but one is a repeat hothead. NFL has to go after everyone who wasn’t just straight shoving. And Ogunjobi because he shoved the guy who didn’t have his helmet on involuntarily. I’m just saying that Rudolph could say whatever he needed to, but to keep getting back into it should carry a single game suspension. Don’t incentivize The guy who doesn’t know when to stand back.
I wasn’t expecting Rudolph to get anything, he basically got absolution (from the league) once he got hit. The game on December 1st is going to be brutal.
This.
Yeah, my guess is the NFL is very carefully choosing the officiating crew for the rematch.
I hope I get it in my area.
No. No it is not. It’s not swinging at a guy with his own helmet, but it’s not good.
You should trade for Vontaze… Oh wait he’s already suspended.
Ogunjobi pushed him out of the way from what I can tell. But meh to me.
I wonder if Pouncey got more because of the kicking. Had he just gotten a couple of punches in would it have translated into a shorter suspension?
I think this thing with Rudolph starting it is wrong. If one wants to split hairs, it looks like Garrett initiated even that when he piled Rudolph to the ground which should have been flagged given the the way the game is officiated today.
It’s like the drunk guy who gets his lights punched out for running his mouth and not walking away. Did he deserve it? No. Did he have several opportunities to not put himself in that place? Yeah. Also, watch the whole thing. He keeps going back there after his own guy keeps trying to pull him away. He’s not making it better.
Got it.
Still weird they ran a play.
Agree there. Just kneel down and go home.
I couldn’t understand Kitchens bitching about not being given the last snap (since the Steelers took a knee on 4th with 5 seconds left). I was thinking he was going to go for a field goal or something to rub in that the Browns won. Nope. He just sent in the backup QB to take a snap and a knee.
Back in the day, it used to just be a 15 yarder.

5$ a beer isn’t expensive?
How much are beers, on average, at bars near you?
$2.75 for domestics. At one place I can still get a can of Strohs for $2 but I don’t like the clientele.
That’s not bad. I use to be able to pay $2 for Bud Lite at a nice bar almost ten years ago. You can still get beer for maybe $3 or $3.50 at a local spot, but $5 has become pretty much standard for most bars near me. But, I can’t get Strohs at any bar near me, so I’m jealous.
I’d ship you some Stroh’s, but it would cost more that the 30 pack itself.
It’s the thought that counts. So thank you.
I was paying $6-7 last weekend at one of the pubs near here. A German Heffe and an Ohio Porter is what I was drinking. I think Stella is $4 a glass there. But those aren’t 12 oz, I think they’re 16 oz. Makes you feel all British, mate, drinking pints you know, cheerios!
It’s called inflation, old man. Things get more expensive. Milk ain’t a nickel anymore.
Isn’t it a bit odd how easily we accept the fact that bankers are stealing 2-5% of our money every year?
*shrugs*
What are you going to do? Move to libertopia?
Our money?
HA!
Read some of them words on those bills. It’s theirs, they’re just letting us hold on to it for a little while.
I saw something that pointed out that milk is cheap at the price.
That’s about what it is at our local pub, but that’s unusual around here. $5 is about average for a Miller Lite. One bar was charging $7.50 for Natty Boh cans and had them listed as imports, but I think that was to fuck with the hipsters.
About normal for what I drink. Definitely not strip-club/ballgame prices.
I remember when $5 was strip club prices.
*fondly remembers when Can-Can girls would discard their sequined bloomers as the Victrola palyed*
We’ve got one “cheap” craft brewery. The Jolly Scholar, the low prices are probably because it’s on a college campus (Case Western). Most of them range between $5-$7 for a standard pint.
$5 will get you a 4 pack of High Life pints down at the gas station.
I occasionally buy a 18 pack at the run down rat hole looking store, for $12.
Milwaukee’s Beast Diet- $14.99/30-pack.
At my Kroger, double-deuces are $1
My Red Dog is $12 for a 30 pack. I’m a man of unrefined taste.
I pay $16 for a four-pack of Surly Aggressive Ale.
Worth. Every. Penny.
$16 is way too much to pay for 15 minutes of drinking.
Uffda. Somewhere between $5 and $6 will get you a sixer of High Life pints here.
But how much is beer?
It’s the Champagne of beers!
So only made in a specific geographic area, made with grapes, and most importantly…
Not beer?
Trump is being lit on fire for enlisting a foreign government to harass his political enemies. If he’d stuck to tradition and used the IRS like everyone else, he’d have been fine.
Exactly. You can use our government, just can’t use a FOREIGN government.
Well, except England. Oh, and Australia. Canada…Israel… the Ukraine in some instances…whatever.
It wasn’t even clear that Biden was going to get the nomination and run against Trump, so he’s not even a political opponent – just a potential political opponent. By that standard, almost every politician in the country could be considered a political opponent and thus untouchable by any investigation, no matter how stark the evidence of wrongdoing is.
By the time this “scandal” occurred, Biden had already made numerous public blunders and been caught in outright lies. I don’t know that it was ever considered likely that he would get the nomination.
Biden hadn’t even announced when the call was made. It was another two weeks before he would do so. So using logic, math and science, at the time of the call, Biden wasn’t even a candidate.
Going OT early I guess, but…
Dow Jones just went over 28k. Paul Krugman hardest hit.
They’ve completely dropped the recession narrative in favor of impeachment. It’s hard to keep your focus when you’re desperate.
Lol. The fucking Wall Street Journal ponders Warren’s tax plan as if it were real. >100% effective rates on some rich people.
Astrid Lindgren faced something similar in Sweden, and wrote an allegorical story about it that helped bring down the Social Democratic government.
having a hard time taking anything this writer says seriously after air quoting breathes as a way to simplify takes an air sample.
put my comment under Spartacus’ comment.
No, Hon, not really. Curiousity has an instrument called SAM which analyzes mineral samples, ie powdered rock, by heating those samples and analyzing the gases released. We already know the composition of Mars’ atmosphere from previous probes. But, yeah, Mars and something about gases.
The fact that the market is rocketing along says much about the impeachment fiasco in Congress. Wall Street hates uncertainty and turmoil, so the smart money is saying its all PR and bullshit, is how I read it.
I have a feeling Dean’s comment should be under something else, too. :-p
The fucking Wall Street Journal
Wall Street hates uncertainty
Nah, I’m good.
Oh yeah, and this: Nobody knows what’s creating oxygen on Mars.
I predict a new theory of second-hand climate change will be emerging any day now.
Mars plants. Duh.
What were the little bugs in the Val Kilmer/Caryanne Moss movie? The ones that lived on Mars but ate people.
Oprah.
Paul Verhoeven made a documentary about this 30 years ago.
Spoilers: Not that it’s a surprise, but Finland beat Liechtenstein 3-0 and qualified for its first major tournament.

Somebody said pitch, so it must be baseball.
Don’t they know the season is over in October?
“I think Rudy Giuliani is a scumbag, but this really is turning into a party-selective witch hunt.”
Roger Stone was convicted for the crime of lying to Congress about not disclosing that others on the campaign might think that he had a source at Wikileaks (of which said source could not be proven). Brennan and Holder never faced any consequences for lying about selling guns to Mexico and spying on Americans, respectively.
Rudy Guiliani is facing investigation and possible jail time for a campaign finance violation. Rarely, if ever, does anyone face criminal prosecution for such an offense.
People are right to lose faith in the law.
It can’t be the system is in the bag/tank for the Democrats. Can it?
I’m telling you. I’m already there. After seeing that tart Justin break the law, not get investigated by the RCMP and ger re-elected, my cynicism reached a new low I didn’t think I could reach.
But boy is law enforcement good at talking a big game about ‘justice’ and kicking the average citizen around.
Don’t forget Clapper lied to the Senate about NSA data collection.
Yeah, I always confuse Brennan with Clapper.
completely understandable.
It’s easy, Clapper is the dude who played Yoda.
Oh I’m certain Brennan has lied plenty while under oath.
He repeatedly went on national TV pre-Mueller and said he saw hard evidence of Trump conspiring with the Russians. Why the fuck didn’t McConnell drag his ass in front of a Senate hearing post-Mueller and demand to know what that evidence was and who leaked it since it wasn’t in the report?
It makes me fucking sick that the “progressives” are now kissing the ass of the “intelligence community” and insisting that you’re insane if you doubt any of their pronouncements.
I just want to ask them, “You say you’re progressives, you say you care about the little guy, and you complained about the activities of the CIA, FBI, and NSA during the Bush years. So what the fuck happened between now and then? When did you decide that these organizations – and a bunch of giant media corporations – are the paragons of honesty?”
Not necessarily insane; but either that or a Russian asset.
“It makes me fucking sick that the “progressives” are now kissing the ass of the “intelligence community” and insisting that you’re insane if you doubt any of their pronouncements.”
They’re statist to the core, which is also why they will align themselves with neocon war mongers. Liberal is the one thing they are not.
Selective enforcement of laws is a hell of a weapon.
Completely wrong. They’re most definitely planning on enforcing it against all you wrong thinkers.
Said it earlier today, old system is outdates. We need a new fairer system in which your betters, who are right thinkers, decide your wrong think is a crime. Right thinking people cannot be guilty, wrong thinkers are always guilty. Equal under the law! How quaint!
The problem is, is that the left have decided that rules be damned, they have to win at any cost, consequences be damned. But I mean, what are they supposed to do? If they let bad orange man win, we’re all finished anyway, so they may as well just burn it all down, and they fully intend to do so.
I’m looking forward to the post apocalyptic world. It’ll be a nice change of pace.
First World problems solved! No more safe spaces! No more women at Ivy League colleges feeling that they are the only ones being raped 5 out of 4 times a day! No more worrying if the chicken had a name! No more worrying that climate change will kill you, you’ll already be dead!
^^ This guy gets it.
France in 1805 and Russia in 1920?
Rudy can reveal he’s running for congress, then they can’t investigate him, right?
How can we know the rules? They just made them all up again an hour ago, for the 16th time today.
Only if he runs as a democrat.
A new Razr?
Dumb.
Really dumb.
My first flip phone was a Motorola MicroTac (circa 1993?). Some days I miss having just a phone.
I’m still using the same Samsung flip phone I acquired probably 16 years ago, because I’m not into tech and I like old stuff. I can talk, text actual text (but not emojis and such), and take a rudimentary picture. I find that I have something akin to a tech “herd immunity,” since I can always ask someone nearby to look up something for me on their phone.
Also, I’m not into communicating all that much.
#metoo
my flip phone is newer but I still like it and I do about what you do with it.
I recently had to upgrade from my flip-fone because 2G won’t work on the local networks here.
So I got a ‘highspeed’ 3G phone that I can talk and text with.
A friend (flip-phone owner) just told me that Verizon told him that 3G will be phased out be the end of 2020. But they are making 4G flip phones. Well, they have a 4g flip phone.
I’ve got a flipphone for making calls and carrying around. I don’t have to worry about the glass breaking or my sausage fingers touching the wrong ‘button’ as I dial.
I have ‘smart’ phones, but I just use them like small tablets and music players. Most of the time I find them of no use.
That being said, I might need a new phone soon, but the only flip phone they have anymore at my provider is an ultra-rugged rubberized water proof paper weight that they want $100 for.
Tracphone for the win.
I have found my tribe!
It looks pretty neat to me.
Too wide. I like the idea, but not the execution.
The original production was in Fort Worth.
Those tools moved to Indonesia or Malaya around 2000, and the last of the company was bought by others a decade later.
speaking of judges, a really overblown criticism making the rounds is that Trump has put forth “not qualified” judicial nominees. Trump with a whopping 8 noms rated as not qualified. i think he’s at 158 appointments to-date. and Cocaine Mitch is still rolling.
The ABA is not a legitimate organization and Republican presidents should act accordingly by not providing nominees for interviews.
Rated as not qualified… by the ABA?
Also not mentioned: the “not qualified” comes from the American Bar Association, which was skinsuited decades ago. I was a member for a year, right out of law school, and when I saw they were resolutely left-wing, I quit.
I never joined and gave the poor girl that called my office to sell me a membership a 15 minute diatribe in which the words “communist pieces of shit” and “Maybe Dick the Butcher was right” figured prominently.
Here’s an interesting take on the ABA vetting process.
That was good. Thanks for sharing.
Didn’t Obama put someone on the Supreme Court who was never a judge at all?
But he balanced her out with a wise latinx who promised to use her special latinx skills in reading the Constitution.
Kagan is Trans?!!!!
Somehow, the last name of Biden or Kerry makes you immune to federal investigation?
Those guys have devoted their lives to making America and the world a better place. Trump is a profiteer.
Occasionally, we have work events that involve booze. One of the reasons I limit my intake to a fraction of my normal is because if I ever pop my cork on my actual views on law, politics, and society, well, it wouldn’t be well received.
I made that mistake sober. When Disney’s stock started to boom because their streaming service subscribed millions of people in a matter of days, I told a co-worker: “I don’t get it. If you knew a guy who was good friends with a pedophile and covered up his crimes and was also good friends with a guy who runs death camps would you say- ‘yeah, but I like his cartoons so I can still do business with him’.” My co-worker just walked away.
The crew here probably has a pretty good inkling of which way I hang, so nobody really raises politics or the like in conversation with me. I don’t know if they talk about it amongst themselves; maybe so, a pretty good number of them are off-the-rack libs who I am sure take everything coming from the DemOp Media as gospel.
When Disney’s stock started to boom because their streaming service subscribed millions of people in a matter of days, I told a co-worker:
I know exactly what you are talking about because i was miraculously able to buy back my short put on Disney at a profit, About and hour before that was announced.
Smart move. Pedophilia pays.
Can’t be much, if OMWC needs a job doing science shit.

I’ve had to ask the girlfriend to not talk about my views with others when out. It’s lead to some… unfortunate… conversations in meat space.
My wife is disturbed by my opinions, so that prevents her from talking about my ideas with others.
My wife never wants to go through TSA with me because she worries they will haul her off too when I start lipping off.

Trump is not a career politician and can’t speak the Shibboleth of “normal” politics. He is wrecking their norms and I’m sure that is why they hate him even more than opposition to his policies would warrant.
They don’t even oppose a lot of his policies on the merits. His last campaign could have consisted almost entirely of Bill Clinton clips. and a few Obama clips, with Trump popping in at the end to say “and I endorse this message!”.
I do look forward to next year, though. I expect to see full, no holds barred, damn the torpedos, women and children last, red in tooth and claw, conflict. It will be glorious.
Unfortunately, I think we can count on the fingers of one hand how many Presidential elections are left that will fit the usual template (de minimis violence, voting and peaceful transition of power. Hell, we might have seen our last one already.
I think this country is a powder keg, and while a charismatic and talented leader might be able to stitch it together for another generation, a charismatic and talented leader could also rip it apart.
My only hope is that Trump wins so big everyone backs away from your model. It’s kind of like rooting for treatable lung cancer instead of pancreatic cancer, but here we are.
If Trump is elected in 2020, I expect fringe elements of the left to reenact the post-Days of Rage revolutionary activities of the early 1970s, bombings and all.
I expect many Darwin Award nominees in that scenario.
There were a few the first time around.
The 60s left made the Palestinians look positively competent.
^THIS^
Trump could have been the biggest disaster ever. If the Dems had simply told Hillary to fuck off after she lost and immediately cozied up to Trump they could easily have gotten a shit ton of progressive bills passed.
Trump has no immunity against flattery. If they had kissed his ass on gun control and the MSM had written a bunch of fawning articles on his “growth” he would have gone along with it all.
They could probably have gotten him to sign up for Medicare for All by giving him a big victory on repealing Obamacare.
Half the GOP would have mindlessly gone along with all this shit because they just want to be liked.
If you dance with the devil, then you haven’t got a clue, for you think you’ll change the devil, but the devil changes you,
I too have thought that the Dems could’ve wooed Trump from the outset to their benefit. I guess being smug outweighs strategizing.
I think that their mindset is such that persuasion is anathema to them. If you don’t agree with them on everything, you are a monster. I don’t think they would even allow you to change your mind and agree with them later.
Look at all the people they crucify because they found some problematic tweet from years ago.
You didn’t change your mind, you just tried to hide the fact that you are a secret nazi.
I think you’re half-right. I think if the Dems truly prioritized gun control and socialized healthcare they could have bent him to their will. But, Trump’s core issue, “America First”, which dictates his policies on diplomacy, trade, and immigration, is the sticking point. I don’t think he would concede much on that front, and I don’t think the Dems would have either, so I think it was inevitable that there would be an era of mutual bridge-burning. If the Dems had backed his wall and praised his tariffs I think he would have gladly folded on other fronts, the ones he doesn’t really care about, but as they instead decided to salt the earth he has responded in kind and retreated to the flattery of the populist right.
If I had been in charge of the DNC at that point, I would have gone with the tried and true tactic of enacting your stuff now, and their stuff later. The GOP falls for that shit all the time. “We’ll raise taxes right now, but the entitlement cuts won’t kick in for three years”. Then in the next budget they rescind all those cuts and give all them even more money.
OK, Donny. We’ll give you $10M this budget to come up with a complete plan for the wall. We’ll also agree to major tariffs against China if they don’t agree to some new trade deal. In return we’ll repeal Obamacare and replace it with Medicare for all. And we’ll do a complete ban on assault rifles right now.
Then after they won big in 2018, they could have reneged on the wall and tariffs.
And that would have been a smart tactic. But I think that believing they are on the right side of history has made them lazy, assuming their glorious future will just come to them and they don’t have to work for it. I’d imagine they would have used your tactic had they been led by an LBJ.
LBJ would have run circles around Trump and fucked Melania too.
LBJ would have had a man in a tower with a gun give us President Pence. *adjusts tinfoil tri-corner hat*
I think you guys are missing the real dynamic. There are 4 groups in play not 2. Democrats, Republicans, People, and the Deep State. Trump is a populist, the People foisted him on the Republicans, who can’t really get behind him because he isn’t one of them. The Democrats and Republicans have both been allies of the Deep State for ever, but the Republicans are now split, because Trump, while an outsider and anathema to the Deep State, has that R by his name, and openly repudiating him would likely end the Republican Party, for ever. The Democrats have let the Deep State take the lead in all of this, and are simply doing as they are bid.
The Deep State does not really care about any of those policies except insofar as they increase the power of the permanent bureaucracy, and they will never let an outsider mess with their fiefdoms. This is Runnymede in reverse. The aristocracy is flexing its muscle to destroy a monarch who threatened to shift the balance of power, in this case the threatened shift is to the People, In John’s it was to the crown.
Very insightful. I’m not sure I would split the Deep State and the Dems into two groups, though. They are welded together.
If so, its the Deep State/Dems, the split Repubs, and Trump/the Populists. As I despise the Deep State/Dems the most, I am not optimistic.
This guy gets it.
A profiteer, and an UPSTART!
(more) Proof of our tragic lack of investment in education
U.S. workers are failing to improve the skills needed to succeed in an increasingly global economy, according to a government agency report released Friday.
The National Center for Education Statistics asked 3,300 respondents ages 16-to-65 to read simple passages and solve basic math problems. What the researchers found is that literacy, numeracy and digital problem-solving ability in the U.S. have stagnated over the past few years.
Some 19% of the test-takers ranked at the lowest of three levels for literacy and 24% lacked basic digital problem-solving abilities.
Meanwhile, a shocking 29% performed at the lowest level for numeracy, the same as findings from the previous study conducted in 2012-2014. Almost one in three couldn’t correctly answer “how much gas is in a 24-gallon tank if the gas gauge reads three-quarters full.”
“These results are another signal that many Americans struggle with the most basic of math skills,” NCES Associate Commissioner Peggy Carr said in a statement. “We need to better equip Americans with the numeracy skills that they need for success, starting in middle and high school.”
When will we fund our schools?
This makes me want to punch the first teacher I see.
Middle and high school seems a little late.
how much gas is in a 24-gallon tank if the gas gauge reads three-quarters full.
I can guarantee you its not 18 gallons, if that’s the answer they are looking for. The needle doesn’t start moving off of “full” until some gallons have been used, and will sit at “empty” with some gas left in the tank.
Same as propane tanks are only filled to 80% (IIRC) capacity.
^^This. It’s not about the right answer, it’s about the answer they want.
I know more than a few college graduates who struggle with multiplication and long division. Their answer is always “I have a calculator/computer to do it for me.”
I’m not gonna lie… Why is that necessarily a wrong answer? Same with memorizing dates. I think it’s good to be educated and know the basic narratives of history, but know the dates? Why? If i know what i’m looking for i can find it on the internet.
I would say that your two examples are deserving of two different answers. The ability to do basic math unaided is fundamentally tied into one’s understanding of numbers – the people who struggle with multiplication and division without a calculator will probably struggle with budgeting and project planning with a calculator. Whereas dates are not essential to understanding a narrative, as one can still conceptualize “before” and “after” without knowing the exact dates. I guess the former is the failure to grasp a process while the later is the failure to grasp details.
I’m there with you leon. I do data analysis for a living and can count on one-hand the number of times I’ve done multiplication or long division by hand. It’s just not efficient.
I’d rather see more time spent understanding the why’s behind something than the mechanical how. Like with statistics. A lot of the textbooks focus on how to do advanced statistics by hand. IMO, that’s not nearly as useful as understanding why test is appropriate and then learning how to perform that test using a program like SAS or SPSS.
Depends on what you want to do. Not being able to do “back of the envelope” mathematics in a meeting is going to make working at any higher level in business difficult.
Sadly it’s also a standard Fortune 500 interview technique to ask you to estimate something weird as part of the interview process. You’ll need to be able to that quickly and in round numbers.
For example its always good to know the US population. The US population is 327M or so you can 300m and start adding or subtracting or multiplying. The idea is to see how you analyze things not that your numbers are right. So if they asked me how many women are in the US I know that they make up more than half the population of a bit over 300m. Based on that I’m going to guess 160m. Jumping to Google – 157M
For statistics I found that manually working with the data in small sets helped me intuit what the actual statistics were doing within stat program.
And for dates I think you need to have some idea of the time period maybe +- 75 years or so?
The correct answer isn’t 160 million. It’s “I wouldn’t go around assuming what gender people choose to identify as, shitlord.”
I’m with Gadfly. It’s really useful to be able to perform mental ‘back of the envelope’ or ‘rough expected magnitude’ calculations. If the device gives an answer too far from your expected range, you recheck the calculation and if necessary your misunderstanding of the problem that led to an out of range result.
I guess I consider math you can easily do in your head to be outside that. I do quick calculations all the time.
I meant doing long multiplication or division equations by hand.
Knowing how to tell a computer to do something is not the same at all as knowing what to tell the computer to do. Being able to do basic math unassisted is a big step up on the latter, in my opinion.
Because when you get into algebraic equations it takes forever to use a calculator to divide all the coefficients, and if you can do it in your head because you memorized the tables any miscalculation on some step looks wrong and allows you to catch you error. Knowledge in your head warns you when something is wrong. Knowledge on Google doesn’t.
Yep, guesstimates are very useful to make sure ‘your phone’ didn’t fuck up the math.
If you need several vials of medication, your Med-calc is wrong.
What? You don’t think they need a half liter of sedative?
“Same with memorizing dates. I think it’s good to be educated and know the basic narratives of history, but know the dates? Why?”
I never ask my students dates (or numbers for that matter). But I do have a few chronology questions, i.e. put these four events in the correct order.
Because training memory is just as important as other educational goals? Seriously, the argument that “muh lrnin r hard. Y I need 2 no that sheeeit” is idiotic. You are learning capacities, not facts.
Not necessarily disagreeing, but I’m not training memory, I’m teaching history. And I’d rather you understand the cause-and-effect issues even if you don’t remember the date of D-Day.
Sorry, my rant wasn’t directed to you. I’m just really fed up with the dumbing down. In every class at every time you should be learning 2 things. 1. the subject 2. how to learn and think.
I’m on the fence on this. Date memorization seems pointless for the most part. However, I think you should at the very least know what decade major events took place.
Why do I think you should know that? I don’t have a good answer other than, because you should.
Agree with this. As I tell my intro-level students, we have two somewhat different goals: they want a good grade, I want them to learn something (and how to think in the future).
Hi Brett
Happy happy hour!
Sportsmouth on local radio going off on how Donnie Two-Scoops was intimidating witnesses. Apparently no one can read.
Must I give a shit?
It’s as if sports radio doesn’t even know its consumers.
“You know what this fantasy football prediction segment needs, more partisan politics. People who listen to sports radio are woke af.”
No. Also, at this point they’re walking into his trap. Every time he does something outlandish, they hurry to make him seem reasonable by saying something crazier. How did he threaten her? What actionable consequences did he state?
The Left has certainly pissed me off by forcing me to side with Trump in all these arguments. I think Trump is pretty much an empty suit and horrible on trade, but for fuck’s sake he hasn’t done anything that comes close to being the end of the world.
How the fuck can Obama drone kill a US citizen with no due process and it is a huge yawn, but Trump HAS to be removed from office because he talked with a foreign politician?
High five. Remember that dive bar we went to? Had a story from a friend of a friend where they let him pass out on a couch for 3 hours after he drank A bunch of bloody Mary’s after a long Saturday night. That’s how you dive bar!

“A New Jersey man accused of killing a woman he had sex with posted a picture of her dead, naked body on Snapchat before calling for help.
Michael T. Gaffney, 21, from Maywood was charged with reckless manslaughter last month over the death of Francis Victoria Garcia, 19.
Garcia was found dead in a car that was parked in a detached parking lot at a high-rise in Hackensack, New Jersey, after a Halloween party.”
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7691147/Woman-dies-rough-sex-car-taking-prescription-drugs.html
But was it a Subaru?
She was cute. He should be executed for reducing the number of attractive women.
Like I said the first time this was covered: Nobody’s daddy is going to aske the State to go easy on you when you make his daughter the rough sex girl. Bad play.
Am I missing something? It sounds like he strangled her. How is that “reckless manslaughter”?
The same way autoerotic asphyxiation is not suicide?
(guessing; dnr)
Don’t bother. Both articles I’ve read don’t dig any deeper.
But I will ask, under what circumstances does a dude find himself with a dead chick with neck bruises on his hands and NOT get charged with murder? She’s not exactly around to say, “Oh, it was just rough sex. Pinky swear!”
Agreed. Also, taking, and then posting, a nude pic of her dead body makes me inclined to not believe his description of how the events transpired.
“Shia LaBeouf admits he is ‘deeply dissatisfied with life’ and says ‘his most intimate moments in life happened on set’ as he poses alongside Kristen Stewart on the cover of Variety”
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-7689837/Shia-LaBeouf-dissatisfied-life.html
Christ, what an asshole.
There’s nothing stopping you from offing yourself, Shia.
Sure there are: courage, fortitude, commitment, testosterone…
You’re listing things Shia does not possess.
Shia recently revealed he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a result of his time working as a child actor
NO.
Fuck you.
Unless you were acting in child porn, just NO.
I don’t know, this is pretty traumatizing.
The Coreys would like a word. I kind of assume any child actor was molested at this point.
Did you see “Holes”?
I’d be mad too. Being a big star and you get paired up with Kristen Stewart? I mean even if you were some deviant who found her attractive, she wouldn’t be down for the fun times because she likes girls too.
Or maybe you aren’t butch enough for Stewart and that is what makes you despondent?
I think it was bold of Kristen to display her acting chops by pretending to experience emotions in that photo shoot. It looks like she’s added a second facial expression to her repertoire.
The human mannequin.
I mean, I can’t hate her for finding a way to make a bunch of money, but my God she’s the worst actress. I don’t get it.
As Dorothy Parker said about Katharine Hepburn, “She runs the gamut of emotions from A to B.”
To be fair, Shia is used to working next to robots in those Transformer movies.
Hooo boy, there’s a guy who definitely bottles his own farts and has a cellar full of his own impressive vintages.
Now that I actually read the article, he claims he caught a bad case of the PTSDs from being a child actor.
Uh, are you saying that you don’t do that?
Money doesn’t buy happiness and all that, but when I hear stuff like this all I can think is that this dude has been so insulated that he thinks he’s the only person who’s ever had a dark night of the soul. People who aren’t rich also have self-doubt. You know what’s worse than not feeling as if you have direction in life? Not knowing how you’re going to keep your house out of foreclosure at the same time. That sucks that he’s in a dark place. He should invest some of his pile of money, get out of show business, and figure out something else to do. He’s got that option, unlike most people.
Get laid off from your job when your wife is 8 months pregnant and then get back to me about stress and anxiety.
I can’t match that, but getting fired while your house is being comprehensively demo-ed for a massive renovation is pretty stressful, too.
maybe he could switch spots with me for a few days, that will fix his punk as right upi
Can’t wait for posts from “Shia drives a Kia”.
By the way, how did he become a “star”? Did he ever do something where everyone agreed he was super good? He seems like one of those people who got “famous” more because of a good PR agent than because of anything they actually did.
I’ve never heard anyone pan Holes or his performance in it
He was a pretty good digger, maybe he should have paid closer attention to his real calling?
See my snark, above.
Disturbia was pretty good, but not really because of his performance or anything.
I liked him in Constantine, because he gets killed.
I’m not alleging gay sex but…Steven Spielberg.
Transformers where the CGI characters were the better actors
He did almost single handedly reinvigorate the flailing Indiana Jones franchise.
He’s an actor. Why do people insist on taking actors seriously? You don’t get worked up when a rent boy espouses a stupid idea, why do it when an actor does? It’s not like there is any difference except pure luck.
YOU WILL NOT DIVIDE US!!!!

Why do you need to pay. You just to look at the 30 sec clips.
I mean several in a row. That is.
What do I do with the other 15 seconds?
Who pays for porn?
Well, I made it out before traffic, so instead of 90 minutes, it was only an hour. At least half of what I bought was not listed on their website.
Now I need a recipe using smoked duck breast. I’ts labelled as fully cooked, but it’s also an ingredient I have no experience with. Suggestions?
I serve it with fired eggs and hash browns for breakfast. I’ve also had it in a sandwich with cornichons.
To clarify: I’ve never used what you bought, but I have used (and really like ) this. The way it’s cooked, the meat sheds easily. I imagine it would make fantastic tacos. If what you’ve got is drier and more like bacon, I don’t know.
I haven’t opened the packaging. They vacuum sealed it.
Slice very thin for a charcuterie plate (cheese, olives, crackers). Eat.
^^^^
Sandwiches with a sharp cheese are good. Shredded and warmed in a hunter or sherry based sauce it is good over rice. Or hell, it’s duck just eat it.
Well, it seems sandwiches are the current leading recommendation.
What? It’s tied 2-2.
You recommended carets.
Up arrows are consensus. It’s in the rules.
you didn’t mean duck and carrots?
Hmmm. Smoked duck shepherd’s pie would be excellent
I suspect you could try it both ways.
Uh uh. Not now. This has become a thing.
*drops gloves*
This makes me so happy.
Duck is good. This is sufficient. Eat it many ways.

It was a dreary day. The Old Man wanted to liven things up. What kind of snitching goes on these days, he asked the college kid.
Oh, there are so many, said the college kid: the Department of Hurt Feelings, The Preferred Pronoun Police, the Bureau of Microaggressions…
OK, I get the idea, said the Old Man. Say, pick one of those places and put them on speaker phone with me.
You got it, said the college kid. The sound of a ring tone filled the room washed over the room like waves on a beached whale for a few moments.
Department of Emergency Re-education, state your denunciation, said the robo-voice.
The Old Man adopted a falsetto: yes, this is Sue DeNim of 123 Fake Street. I wish to report a misgendering I witnessed at the Veterans of Antifa Post 1138.
A Bias Response Team has been dispatched, shouted the robo-voice before the call abruptly ended.
Call another, said the Old Man. The college kid scrolled his EyePhone for a moment. More ringtones.
Hate Speech Hotline, please describe the thought crime, chimed a robo-voice.
The Old Man did a bad Colombo impression: My name is Hugh Jass, and ah, I live close to the, ah, Antifa Vet post…
The robo-voice spoke again: stay on the line, citizen, this is a serious matter and it is a felony to make an incomplete report.
It sounded like a talking smoke alarm that just found out the airline lost its luggage.
The Old Man stayed in character: well, lemme just ask ya one thing- is it a crime when some Antifa guys don’t use the right pronouns?
A sympathy squad has been dispatched with extra crayons and puppies, screeched the robo-voice.
Call one more, said the Old Man with satisfaction. Even the ringtones started to sound like stifled laughter.
Misogyny and Mansplaining Ministry, chirped the robo-voice. Please describe the nature of the sexism.
The Old Man did a bad John Wayne impression: Well, pilgrim, my Name is Mike Hunt, and if there’s one thing that gets me angry, it’s sexism.
Go on, said the robo-voice, like a microwave announcing a freshly cooked bag of popcorn.
The Old Man continued: well, ah…the thing is, the sexists are the guys from the Department of Re-Education. One of them said…something so awful…
Go on, pleaded the robo-voice. There was a faint hint of an old dial-up modem in its speech.
The Old Man continued with feigned angst: xe said…xe said…there are only 2 genders! Oh, it was just the most problematic thing!
Gender Studies commandos are on the way, shrieked the robo-voice.
The Old Man breathed in slowly and sat in his recliner. And now we sit back and watch the fireworks. Put on NPR, he said.
The announcer was somber: Tragedy struck today at Antifa post 1138 as multiple goodthink enforcement agencies rushed to the scene of a badthink hatecrime sadcry.
In the ensuing chaos, the puppies escaped their expert handlers, ate most of the crayons, and had accidents all over the post’s rec room.
The holoprojector displayed a court-room style color pencil drawing of twig-armed cretins screeching at each other while puppies shat everywhere.
We reached out to a Jedi Moonshine Lumberg, one of the veteran survivors of today’s incident for comment, said the announcer.
A bald old man with a nose ring and a haggard face spoke haltingly: today was terrible. It was almost as bad as the time I sprained my wrist from throwing a milkshake.

No way the Onion was ever this good.
Not even close. I recall picking up the Onion pretty regularly during its heyday in the 90s/ early aughts, and the headlines were by far the best part (they were pretty funny). The actual writing was not in the same league as the Bee.

Looking at Falarca’s outcome she did win. The thing is, with a sense of entitlement like hers she will fuck up and do something seriously wrong (and get caught) again.
I have repeatedly commented that the point of the criminal law is that vengeance is a natural desire and ceding the right of revenge to the State allows us to have vengeance without sacrificing justice. If the courts are declaring a group or groups immune from real punishment vendetta will return and that is a bad thing. It is not as bad as having groups that are immune from punishment however.
That is actually part of the plan. They are dead set on destroying the civil society and they are making amazing progress. For the true believers….well, as our friend Yuri Bezmenov put it “When they see the reality of their world of social justice and equality, they will not like it very much”. For the cynical power mongers it will look like victory.

NPR had an amazing story tonight.
First: They have started calling Israeli Arabs “Palestinians in Israel.”
Second: Jooz are bad because they aren’t policing the “Palestinians in Israel” enough. Apparently there is a lot of violent crime in P.I.I. neighborhoods, and they re protesting demanding that the Israelis do something about it.
The Palestinians can be thankful that the Jews’ history makes them completely unwilling to engage in the extreme responses the Palestinians’ behavior seems to beg for.

Our democracy is not in peril—we do not live in a democracy. The image of our democracy is in peril. The deep state—the generals, bankers, corporatists, lobbyists, intelligence chiefs, government bureaucrats and technocrats—is intent on salvaging the brand. It is hard to trumpet yourself as the world’s guardian of freedom and liberty with Donald Trump blathering on incoherently about himself, inciting racist violence, insulting our traditional allies along with the courts, the press and Congress, tweeting misspelled inanities and impulsively denouncing or sabotaging bipartisan domestic and foreign policy. But Trump’s most unforgivable sin in the eyes of the deep state is his criticism of the empire’s endless wars, even though he lacks the intellectual and organizational skills to oversee a disengagement.

It’s the birthday weekend, so I’m taking Saturday off. Not telling the wife or kid. Kind of sneaky, but otherwise they’ll fill up the day with shit I don’t want to do. RANT: I was randomly checking the stock market on google finance and scrolled down to the “news” section and clicked on an article blurb from CNET; not something I commonly do.
Shortly after arriving on the CNET article, one of those scammy “YOUR PC HAS A VIRUS CONTACT MICROSOFT SUPPORT” ad-things hi-jacked the webpage. Not a pop-up, but the take-over-the-page / re-direct type.
I marveled at it for a moment, in all it’s nostalgic glory, poor grammar and all. I typically use ad blockers or Brave so it’s been a long time since I’ve seen one.
Got to thinking, how are these things still possible on so-called mainstream websites? Isn’t anyone policing these things? Or, are these companies so desperate for revenue that they permit these things to occasionally slip through the cracks.
Likewise, I’ve been a long time fan of Instapundit and my-god the ads there are some of the worst, scammy crap I’ve seen in a LONG time. Reynolds was begging readers to turn off ad blockers for a moment; hell no! Maybe I would consider it if the ads weren’t so horrendous. Furthermore, before I installed Brave on my iPhone, pretty sure my apple ID was hacked via an instapundit hijack style ad. Someone spent $50 on my Apple ID, although it was refunded. (Hey thanks Apple for basically FORCING me to link a credit card to my Apple ID)
In conclusion, thanks to TPTB at Glibs for not resorting to that shit. I will continue to throw a few measly bucks every year as appreciation.
I’ve never seen anything that scammy, even in the rare moments I’m not using an ad-blocker. Yikes.
