The Park
We live in a motel right next to I-10 in Ontario Cali; not a bad place and it seems they built a park. Why? We’ll get to that. Bella has insisted we go behind the building next door when walking, so we did, and found this.
Then we noticed a larger park on the other side of the street and went there, and found this.
Founders Garden: A tribute to the Chaffey Brothers and Segundo Guasti, who basically made Ontario bloom into the city it became. Let’s continue…
The rest is Roses by Armstrong, Olives by Graber, and Grapes by Guasti.
A nice park in the middle of a commercial area: A gem in the sea of buildings and concrete that make up most of SoCal; glad we found it—take a look.
Sluices and water towers, [of course] olive trees, and some roses,
This is a walking park. No facilities, recreation or even trash cans. It is however, spotless, and we saw very few people walking.
In the retaining pond for the water tower we found a few ducks hanging out; not an easy picture to take with Bella on the leash.
There are nice benches scattered throughout amongst the olive trees; suitable for quiet contemplation or just chillin’ with my little villain, Bella.
Considering where its located, there is a serenity, maybe a zen kinda feel to the place. If your ever stuck in the IE, I recommend a visit.
Oh yeah, there are no signs prohibiting alcohol. Just to be safe I brought a Dogfish Head Sea Quench session sour ale; really good beer. Even though its 4.9% abv.

Ontario CA, that’s rough. I lived in Redlands for 3 years, I’ll never go back to the IE. Nice write up Yusef. Scratch Bella behind the ears for me.
Nice pics! The lack of people kind of freaks me out though.
This concrete park reminds me a bit of Exchange Place adjacent to the ex-employer, where my favorite statue ever is located. A wikipedia history dive led to this photo and the revelation that this piece was going to be moved (i.e. buried) because it was deemed “too controversial”. Thankfully they came to their senses.
A new phone helped, I hope water doesn’t become controver….. oh never mind
When I dated NYC girl who lived in Park Slope, she was big on going to Prospect Park, and had a thing for Grand Army Plaza.
I cant count how many hungover/still-drunk morning walks I was dragged to there.
I saw Luna in Prospect Park – only time I’ve ever been there and I’ve never had reason to see Grand Army Plaza. I’ve only lived in Brooklyn for 10 years.
A heterosexual woman in Park Slope?
LOL
I found one.
I actually met her in Lexington, Ky when I was doing boiler testing for UK, and she was doing a presentation for Lexmark.
I lived in Manhattan’s Chelsea for two years. All my neighbors were heterosexual. What a rip-off.
I thought Chelsea was gay af.
The gays were getting priced out even 10 years ago. Still lots of rich ones, sure, but it’s nothing like the “gay ghetto” the media used to portray.
I haven’t hung out in nyc in ages.

I lived in Hoboken in the mid 90s and Chealsea was where I wished I could have lived.
And I’m saying that as a straight guy…
I lived in Hoboken for a couple months around 97. Shit, it was like a heterosexual young-and-reasonably-well-off paradise. Why the hell would you want to have been in Chelsea?!
Cars triple-parked in the street?
Wanted to be in Manhattan proper. But I’m not knocking Hoboken.
However, I got tired of city life in general. Happier in the ‘burbs but not so much about NJTransit…
I thought you were in Japan.
Lame, should have the bayonet piercing the back of the guy’s skull instead of his back and the tip could be exiting the eye socket, could have his eyeball still impaled on the point with a few tendons hanging from it, they could make them out of that Flexseal stuff so while weatherproof they could still flop around in the breeze a little bit.
I like the cut of your jib.
I never knew that statue existed. I too am happy they weren’t able to bury it.
LOL. The article is from April 2018. So, the Russians installed their puppet in the White House, meeting with a Russian is likely a treason or at least the Logan Act violation. But it’s also politically incorrect to remind people of other bad things they did. Too confusing.
Yeah, it was only in the last few months that the plans to move it were shelved.
Silver cans are a dead giveaway. You don’t even need to brown bag a green can.
Hence the Sea Quench, and a nice walking beer it is,
After he got hit with a $100 fine, my underage drinking brother wised up and used to pour his beers into a Coke can and stroll about unimpeded.

Nice Yusef. The lack of people is eerie, but so like SoCal – house to car to store/work to car to house. Looks like a great place for a few hundred homeless. The place really needs the color a lot of blue tarps can add. Does Ontario bus them to LA?

Okay, a confession: I’ve put broccoli on pizza. I’ve put pineapple on other pizzas. And I liked it. It’s not what I usually put on there, and I actually haven’t done it in years. But mint fucking chocolate?? That’s a bridge too far.
There’s no shame in broccoli on a pizza. Pineapple…well, everyone’s experimented with alternative lifestyles at some point. So long as you don’t do it right where everyone can see. You know, don’t make a habit of it.
Broccoli is great in a stuffed pizza, also known as a calzone.
So, either college or prison? Got it.
If I remember right, the broccoli was part of a “spring vegetable” thing. I think it also had onions, bell peppers, zucchini, Roma tomatoes, and jalapenos.
The pineapple was on something that some would call pizza and others were not – it had leftover roast chicken, BBQ sauce, and pineapple. Would you find it in a classic NYC pizzeria? No. Was it tasty? Fuck yes.
Broccoli or pineapple on a pizza can be forgiven. What I cannot forgive is the absolute abomination of using mayo in lieu of cheese. This curse is too fcuking common in Japan and drives me nuts.
(Sitting down in a restaurant in Tokyo – looking at the menu) “Oh, they have pizza! I really feel like a pizza tonight. Great…. wait a minute – is that mayonnaise? (throws up a little in his mouth) …OK, I’m not hungry anymore…”
I… can’t even. ?
I cannot abide by mayo in any form, except in potato salad. To me, it’s the anti flavor. It’s right up there with wonder bread and american cheese.
The flavor? The smell shoulda warned you up front.
I like mayo. A good one has a nice mild spiciness – not everything has to be in your face.
But on pizza? No thanks.
And mayo is the best moisture barrier for the bottom piece of bread on a sandwich. Without it, you’re buying a one way ticket to Soggytown, USA (unless you eat the sandwich immediately).
I’ll eat mayo toast, nut ew on a pizza.
Nut ew, indeed!

What I hear
I’m sure there’s some of that, and a whole lot of childless urban Marxists who instinctively root for “the worker” which in practice means “union hacks”. That stat, if accurate, is just shocking to me.
Also, I’m thinking many of the white progressives in nyc (and other places expensive to live) send their kids to private school.
Absolutely. There are so few whites left in public schools that people are starting to question the “toxic whiteness” narrative that racists like the school chancellor are pushing.
Anyone have a link to the poll he cites?
I played bass guitar in high school. Never really good at it but learned to appreciate bass lines.
Like this.
Or this
Or this.
I’ve seen Rush four times, the first in the mid nineties, and Geddy Lee played his bass, a harmonica AND keyboards simultaneously during Temples of Syrinx. All three of them are virtuoso’s. I would go see them annually, if they played here that often.
I find Neil Peart pretentious af though.
Can’t disagree, but he’s a top notch drummer by any measure.
And he rides motorcycles
The last time I saw them was at the Greek theatre in Griffith park. That morning I met some friends at a Starbucks near there. Some guy pulled up on a yellow BMW. I was gonna go talk to him about riding, but I was in my truck. I hadn’t seen any pics of him in forever. That night, they show him on the jumbo tron and sure enough, it was him. The same bike was parked near an out building at the venue also.
I was getting worried until I hit this.

Lovely article Yusef. Eerie lack of people.
For having seen the first episode and then the last half of the last episode of this season… I’m happy with the way it turned out. It wasn’t nearly as dumb as it could have been. It’s not like they killed off the big bad in the third episode by having Arya just kinda materialize behind him. It’s not like Danny just waltedz into King’s Landing, or did anything unbelievably dumb and out of character. And I figure they must have wrapped up all the loose ends, you know, the really interesting meat of the series, much more interesting than who gets the big chair at the end. Things like the Prince that was Promised/Azor Ahai, or what Arya’s real purpose was, or giving Bran’s story a satisfying culmination after eight years of buildup and mystery. Or at least have someone, anyone, in that family acknowledge that Rickon is dead. They must have put all those years-long stories to bed with a satisfying conclusion at some point between episode one and halfway through episode six. Otherwise, this whole series was really pretty stupid after all.
I guess they didn’t just forget Rickon after all. I didn’t watch much of the last couple seasons either.
Fuck you, Martin. And fuck you, Rothfuss. Lazy, indulgent pricks.
At least this dude finished his series.

Yeah, pretty much. I’m not even religious but was annoyed by those books.
I just got back from a visit over to Vox. There’s an article on the signifigance of Sansa’s hairdos. Check it out. It will make things all better.
What/
I’m with you.
And dragons know what thrones are and know the symbolism of destroying them, I guess
I’m just glad that the dragon, when all was said and done, pulled a Chuck Heston at the end of Planet of the Apes moment and raged against the foolish shortsightedness of a people so obsessed with power that they pursue it to their own destruction. Really, if they’d just listened to the dragons to begin with, it would’ve all been fine.
It says in the books that they are supposed to be highly intelligent, believed by some to be even smarter than men.
They come across as dog-level intelligence in the show.
Thus proving the point
Yes, in the show, as slumbrew says, they are just big attack dogs that obey anyone with Targaryian blood (apparently). then out of no where it burns the thrown, because the writers wanted to be witty.
My stepson says they (Xers and Millenialls) were discussing GoT at water cooler today. Couple of 20 somethings walked by and said “Nerds!” I know lots of Boomers who feel the same way (probably those who know every line of dialogue from first Star Wars movie.)
Well, it seems that GoT did what pretty much no other concept could do: Bring you guys together with the likes of Vox and NR!
Thanks for taking us with on your walk, Yusef. I have Hughes.net, so picture heavy posts are tough for me. I’ll check it out at work, tomorrow.

That show looks terrible.
Blasphemer! There is only one true O’Connell and Jerry is his name!
I’m pretty sure it started Jerry O on his way to getting mountains of snatch*. It wasn’t so bad for 80’s Canadian sci-fi TV in syndication.

He got Rebecca Romjin and I didn’t so he wins. But Jesus Christ that show looks like an independent station reject.
Can’t find the scene where Jerry and his brother play the meatheads in The New Guy.
Hmmm……yeah. Can be both, actually.
Never heard of that either.
I never heard of it.
My Secret Identity? I’m not really surprised.
CPRM is the only one I would have put $ on to know it.
Yeah, like I said I rewatched the first season last year.
Sliders was good, then kind of fell apart in the later seasons.
Seasons 1-2 of Sliders was great.
And, I watched MSI, and not sliders.

Have you considered buying a wrist rocket along with a box of ball bearings?
There’s some dickweed on this block who bought a shitty-ass Fisher Price mini-bike with a malfunctioning muffler, and he thinks it’s some kind of badass Harley-Davidson or something. When he flies down the street on that thing, he looks like a redneck version of one of those circus performers who rides a comically undersized tricycle.
He’s really testing my commitment to libertarian principles (since he’s recklessly riding a non-street legal vehicle all over the neighborhood) and I’m pretty sure he’s in violation of the local noise ordinance.
Maybe I’ll get lucky and he’ll crash and break his collarbone.

Silence is violence. Can’t wait to see how this is received.
I only watch actual sporting events, not “news”, so this was never really an issue for me. I guess it also helps that I don’t watch the big three leagues which is where most of the politics seems to be jammed into.
I watched (past tense) it occasionally at home and fairly frequently when I traveled for work. The moment I started hearing politics I stopped. Fuck them. Sports is escapism. I don’t want your blowhard, empty headed sportscaster telling me what to think.
Dammit, Switzerland, you had ONE job!
At least they voted for it. I mean, it’s stupid but hey that’s their choice.
That IS cold comfort. Do you give it up willingly, or, make them take it?
Yes they did. Makes me appreciate the antimajoritarion nature of our Constitution.
Good point. The US would probably join them if was put up to a popularity-contest vote.
It’s only common sense.
That would put us on the right side of history…

Well, Glibs…it’s that time of the night. Where we turn down the lights; kick back, and relax. And talk about cocaine comedies from the 80’s.

I clicked on a lamp and sure enough, I saw a rodent ducking behind an end table. I immediately sprang into action, slipping on my shoes and grabbed a broom from the closet. When I cornered it the rodent it tried to run under my bed. I pinned it down with the broom head and quickly bashed its head in. When I stopped I really noticed the size. Holy shit! This thing’s the size of a large rat! Then I lifted the broom. It was a hamster…pretty sure I just killed somebody’s missing pet hamster…Good morning!
