STEVE SMITH WRITE TENDER LOVE POEM!

STEVE SMITH GIVE READING FROM BOOK. BOOK OF STEVE SMITH POEM.

STEVE SMITH IN REFLECTIVE MOOD TONIGHT. HIM MISS NESSIE. HIM DECIDE SHARE POEM WITH FUNNY GLIBERTARIAN PEOPLE:

NESSIE BELLE LEE

IT WAS MANY AND MANY AN EON AGO,
IN A MISTY LAND-LOCKED SEA,
THAT A MONSTER THERE LIVED WHOM YOU MAY KNOW
BY THE NAME OF NESSIE BELLE LEE;
AND THIS MONSTER SHE LIVED WITH NO OTHER THOUGHT
THAN TO LOVE STEVE SMITH AND BE LOVED BY ME.

STEVE SMITH WAS A MONSTER AND SHE WAS A MONSTER,
IN A MISTY LAND-LOCKED SEA,
BUT WE LOVED WITH A LOVE THAT WAS MORE THAN LOVE—
STEVE SMITH AND MY NESSIE BELLE LEE—
WITH A LOVE THAT THE WINGÈD SERAPHS OF HEAVEN
WERE HORRIFIED TO SEE.

AND THIS WAS THE REASON THAT, LONG AGO,
IN A MISTY LAND-LOCKED SEA,
REPTILICUS BLEW OUT OF A CLOUD, CUCKING
MY BEAUTIFUL NESSIE BELLE LEE;
SO THAT HER ABYSSAL KINSMEN CAME
AND BORE HER AWAY FROM ME,
TO SHUT HER UP IN A BIRTHING CRÈCHE
IN THEIR KINGDOM UNDER THE SEA.

THE HIKERS, NOT HALF SO RAPED IN HEAVEN,
WENT ENVYING HER AND ME—
YES!—THAT WAS THE REASON (AS ALL MEN KNOW,
IN THIS MISTY LAND-LOCKED SEA,)
THAT REPTILICUS CAME OUT OF THE CLOUD BY NIGHT,
CUCKING AND FUCKING MY NESSIE BELLE LEE.

BUT OUR LOVE IT WAS STRONGER BY FAR THAN THE LOVE
OF THOSE WHO WERE OLDER THAN WE—
OF MANY FAR TERRIFYING THAN WE—
AND NEITHER THE HIKERS IN HEAVEN ABOVE
NOR HER KINSMEN DOWN UNDER THE SEA
CAN EVER DISSEVER MY PENIS FROM THE CLOACA
OF THE BEAUTIFUL NESSIE BELLE LEE;

FOR THE MOON NEVER BEAMS, WITHOUT BRINGING ME DREAMS
OF THE BEAUTIFUL NESSIE BELLE LEE;
AND THE STARS NEVER RISE, BUT I FEEL THE BEADY EYES
OF THE BEAUTIFUL NESSIE BELLE LEE;
AND SO, ALL THE NIGHT-TIDE, I LIE DOWN WITH THE HIDE
OF MY LOST DARLING—MY MONSTER—MY SEA SERPENT AND MY BRIDE,
IN HER PRISON IN THE DEEPEST SEA—
IN HER LOVE NEST IN THE SQUIRMING SEA.

The softer side of Steve! I’m drinking this… And you all?

It’s like you are daring me…

        1. Sean

          I double dog dare you.

    2. Ayn Random Variation

      By drink you mean…?

    3. Nephilium

I’ve got a selection of Platform beer, Sixpoint beer, Fat Head’s beers, Dogfish Head beer, Cigar City beer, and a wide range of liquor. Currently on a Cigar City Guayabera.

      1. Timeloose

I do dig the Six point Resin

      2. Timeloose

Just picked up two Omegang Beers tonight. A Belgian Porter and Imperial Stout.

        1. Nephilium

I’ve had neither of those from Ommegang, but I’ve not disliked any of their beers that I’ve tried before (and their yeast is insane for home brewers). I may have made a mistake on the Sixpoint beer though, it’s a DIPA (I usually like), but it’s a New England style one with hops I haven’t had before. One of the notes they emphasize on the package is coconut (which I hate). The one I’ve had I didn’t notice a coconut flavor, but I did notice an off-taste I was not a fan of.

    4. KSuellington

Nice. I like a nice gose, but for me one or two does it, preferably in warm weather. It’s been cold and rainy here so I am working on my first of the nite, a rye old fashioned and getting ready to go across the street to pick up some pale ales.

Nice avatar…Not. Hard to beat alcohol, tobacco and dogs.

WTF is it anyway? A dead rat next to a whiskey bottle?

        1. Spudalicious

A dead rat next to an empty bottle of Hennessy cognac. Once I saw the story, I had to have it.

          1. Rhywun

Nice. I picked up some Hennessy today. I gotta be careful with it, though.

          2. Spudalicious

The real question is, is the rat dead? Or just passed out?

          3. J. Frank Parnell

            Why not both? /Schrödinger

          4. MikeS

Uh, you said just above that it’s dead.

    6. MikeS

This. I first tried it a few months back, and wow; I don’t think you can buy a better whiskey for the money. I think it shames some that cost much more. It’s my new “daily drinker”.

      1. Nephilium

I just poured myself some of the Green Spot. A bit pricey for an everyday drinker, but it’s a good one.

        1. MikeS

Irish Whiskey is a style I haven’t explored yet. I should give this a try.

          1. Ayn Random Variation

            You’re no drinker

          2. MikeS

            *Feels shame*

          3. Spudalicious

            Only Tulpa feels shame.

          4. Nephilium

Your baseline Irish Whiskeys are Jameson (Catholic), Bushmills (Protestant), and Tullamore Dew (came into being before the other two were stratified as to who drank them). Of course all three are made by the same company now. My preference is Tullamore, then Jameson, then Bushmill, at least at the base level. If you want to get fancy, Redbreast is amazing, and Green Flash is good (if overpriced). My personal favorite, for the name alone, is Writer’s Tears. Middleton’s is the one that I only pour for special occasions.

          5. KSuellington

Agreed. Redbreast 12 is some awesome whisky ? . I’ve seen it on sale at Costco for 35 bucks a750ml. Amazing price, it’s usually closer to fifty, and worth it at that price. The Jameson’s Caskmate Stout is a great everyday sipper at about 27 bucks.

          6. Spudalicious

            $35 for Redbreast 12 is a steal.

If you ever have the coin to splurge for a bottle of Redbreast 12 Cask Strength, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

          7. juris imprudent

You hit enough high notes to be forgiven overlooking Powers. Have you had the 12yo Tullamore? I bought a bottle of Midleton but haven’t opened it yet – when I get the next job, it gets opened.

          8. Nephilium

I was at Tullamore last year, I’ve got the Tullamroe Warehouse Reserve on my shelf. I’ve had the Powers, and I also didn’t mention the Tyrconnell which is awesome as well.

I’ve made my way through 2 bottles of Midleton (and have one on the shelf) over the past 20 years. If you ever plan on going to Dublin, save your cards from the Midleton bottles, they’ll get you a free tour for two of the Bow Street Distillery.

I put pineapple on pizza #3. With chicken. And bacon. And bbq sauce.

          1. l0b0t

Our local does a BBQ chicken pizza that is positively Heavenly. They put bacon and ranch dressing on it.

          2. Rhywun

I did baked chicken breast in ranch dressing and bread crumbs tonight. It was mostly an experiment to remind me whether I like ranch or not.

            I don’t.

          3. l0b0t

Last night’s dinner was prime rib and individual Yorkshire puddings. Tonight, I took a pudding, stuffed some havarti and a hard-boiled egg (hard cooked? I steam them after sage advice from y’all), ran it through the toaster and drizzled it with Bearnaise. It was yummy.

          4. Rhywun

That all sounds ambitiously delicious. And yeah, the proper cheffy term is “hard cooked”.

Tomorrow I’ll be aiming for an instant pot beef stroganoff. And I’ll probably toss the bottle of ranch dressing while it cooks.

Isn’t defending our borders one of the biggest things the Feds are supposed to do? Why is doing that the most evil thing ever?

I might have to do a self imposed media blackout. The media freak out is quite disingenuous.

    1. Gustave Lytton

And politicians along with the (US) media used to notionally patriotic, instead of being ashamed and embarrassed at being Americans.

    2. Libertesian

I recommend a media grayout. This site is a pretty good source of news… Which media outlets do you frequent?

      1. Sean

CBS morning news, WFMZ morning news, and usually Tucker in the evening.
It’s all getting to be a bit much, even as background noise.

        1. MikeS

Dude. Turn it all off and just rely on this place for major happenings. Your stress level will go down and you’ll be a happier person. I’m not shitting you. Once I stopped watching (and internet reading) the news, it helped me be happier. Not like a night and day thing, but by degrees, for sure.

          1. straffinrun

You can’t just go into places like Vice and BuzzFeed without proper protection. I have a Hazmat suit and a necklace made of Voban around my neck. Go into places like that naked and you ended up getting rekt.

          2. Sean

Oh, I have protection… Trojans and an AK74.

          3. MikeS

Ahhh-ha-ha! That’s what that stuff is called? Wow, who here doesn’t have that smell permanently singed into their olfactory memory center?

Holy shit, I just smelled it. Like memory-smelled it. Crazy.

          4. straffinrun

Worked part time at a movie theater when I was in Uni. We made the new employees clean the puke. “Low man gets the Voban”. Mnemonic devices work.

          5. Fourscore

I hardly watch any TV news. 5 o’clock Fox and a little Fox business is all. I have to agree with MikeS. Feels good not to be irritated watching some of dumbest utterances to come from the mouths of pols/news/police. My world is a better place without too much non info.

          6. Rhywun

The only MSM news I get is accidentally when I turn my TV on and it starts on Channel 1 which is the local cable news channel. It’s every bit as biased as CNN or MSNBC.

          7. Drake

I do some Fox Business in the morning. That’s about all I can stomach.

    3. Ayn Random Variation

I’ve completely turned out, but the other day they had Samantha bee on a channel that just played big bang theory, so I accidentally listened to her for a few minutes go on about the new green deal and how dumb trump nazis were opposing it.
The same night I also accidentally listened to the daily show because it was on after south park, and the guy who does that show did the exact same bit as Bee, mocking people who mocked the Green thing.
I can’t imagine the nonsense that’s out there after just a couple of minutes of accidental retardation viewing

      1. Playa Manhattan

It’s almost like they get their talking points from the same place.

        1. JaimeRoberto: Gentleman, Scholar, French Tickler

          Almost.

    4. KSuellington

I have almost completely given up on listening (I drive hours each day) or watching any news media. I get links from here, Drudge and RealClear and that is more than enough. I do like Armstrong and Getty (kinda libertarians who broadcast out of Sacramento, but are syndicated) because they are hilarious, but I find anything from the left or right hard to take these days.

      1. The local SF station that plays libertarian Armstrong and Getty in the morning changes to full Lefty in the afternoon. I just started the car and there was a black gentleman being interviewed (they didn’t reintroduce him after I joined) about Reagan, and he seemed pretty accurate about Reagan’s presidency for the most part, so I kept listening– and it was nice to have something discussed besides emergency walls. But then he said the only reason Reagan was elected was he appealed to lower middle class white voters who felt he would keep the black man down.

And I wonder why this myth continues out there in general about whites. I think even those white people who might even be fairly racist just don’t have the plight of blacks at the top of their list of concerns in life, likely very low if at all. But there are black demagogues out there who are seemingly convinced that most whites spend every waking moment plotting how to keep the black man down. Why does this line of thinking still persist in 2019?

        1. Heroic Mulatto

And I wonder why this myth continues out there in general about whites.

The cultural inertia from the century that spanned the failure of Reconstruction to the End of Jim Crow in which “lower middle class white voters … [kept] the black man down”. To counter this would require a greater amount of interaction between the white lower middle class and the black lower middle class; however, the trend seems to be increasing separation.

          1. KSuellington

Unfortunately I think you are correct.

          2. Yes, I think you make a great point, HM.

But seeing how different things are today, it can’t help for people to be saying such things which are so over the top, rather than at least recognizing how far we’ve come, and using that as a springboard to get things even better, instead than acting like we still have separate drinking fountains and insinuating there’s KKK members on every block. And that interaction between those demographic groups isn’t going to improve if there’s people telling blacks that whites are their enemy and always plotting against them.

What do you think would change things? I think a lot of people hoped that electing Obama would have started us down the right road, but that didn’t seem to do it, to say the least. Or do you suspect change gradually until one day people wake up and discover it’s become a pretty integrated and sane country? One can only hope.

        2. KSuellington

Yeah, the dude after A&G on KGO is a prime example of full blown TDS proggie insanity. Amusingly, I was talking to an older Chinese lady that I know today and she had all kinds of praise for Orange Man. She did not like him at all during the campaign and the beginning of his term. I know about five or six full on Trump fans here in the Bay Area, and funny enough all of them are non whites, four of them women.

I don’t want anyone who’s interested in “going behind” my father’s saying getting behind my walls, thank you. Sounds like too much familiarity, Robert. Maybe keep to your side of the wall and I’ll keep to mine, thanks. Maybe now I know who’s always tossing over these stones, asshole.

          1. MikeS

            Such a chilly reaction.

      4. MikeS

This bit of “artwork” made me realize how stupid all these “presidential” photos are, going back as far as we’ve had cameras. If a photog and an editor can make this buffoon look “presidential”…

And I’m not complaining…it’s an eye opening experience. I feel…free.

    6. Breet Pharara

Because the left wants open boarder now, but isn’t willing to make a principled argument for why we should have them. Instead they shout racist until everyone agrees. Pretty much the same strategy for everything the left wants, actually.

      1. Fourscore

I was a total and complete CSPAN junkie from the early 1980s until about 2012. The callers to the participatory content became so insufferable that I became convinced they were just DNC/RNC boiler room operations. I don’t miss it at all.

      1. Rhywun

I don’t think I’ve watched even 60 seconds of that in my life. What the hell was wrong with you? 🙂

        1. l0b0t

The live feeds from House and Senate were fun. You could watch speeches, then watch coverage of those speeches on other networks that twisted them around to say something different or disregarded the Congresscritter saying something profoundly stupid.

      2. MikeS

I was a CSPAN junkie for about 3 months in 1996. I got better.

Does bring a tear to the eye, doesn’t it?

Speaking of Poe’s works, I had a meeting of 6 around my office table, and we heard a sound that made us all swivel to the window. Suddenly there came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my window glass.

Big ol’ Beautiful raven that decided to bring his bride to the palm tree outside my office ever since. I hope they make a nest. They are beautiful, intelligent creatures.

      1. hayeksplosives

He was so insistent in his tapping at the window that I wanted to open it (doesn’t open) and ask his opinion on the issue of the day.

If he’d said Nevermore, I’d have had to take the day off.

        1. Ayn Random Variation

    3. I always liked Annabel Lee as well, but so sad …snif.

    4. Rhywun

      #metoo

I’m not even a poetry person but I remember loving that one in middle school. Poe is one of my faves overall.

      1. I remember my mom reading it to my sister and I when we were kids. She really loved it. I only recall wondering why it had to be so sad. Because it was Poe, I thought the last verse was instead going to be that Annabel came back from the dead and wreaked havoc and vengeance on the local village.

      2. Akira

I have the complete collection of his tales and poems.

My favorite are the “ratiocination” stories, number one being “The Gold Bug”.

        1. Nephilium

I think this may be the only time I’ve ever seen someone reference the Gold Bug. I had several teachers tell me it wasn’t real.

          1. hayeksplosives

It’s tough to read through the “accents” but worth it.

As an adolescent Sherlock Holmes buff (big time), I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Poe’s influence on Conan Doyle.

          2. Akira

Haha well, the narrator’s treatment of poor old Jupiter is pretty unwoke.

    1. Timeloose

      That is good stuff.

Remember the Police Police Bureau that was letting antifa and other left wing thugs run rappant over Portland, assault innocent people, and warned people to stay away rather than shut them down?

They were conspiring with right wing extremists and plotting against antifa:
    https://www.registerguard.com/news/20190215/texts-between-portland-police-far-right-group-draw-scrutiny

    1. Brochettaward

Looks more like the cops are working with the leader of the Patriot Prayer rally to decrease the chance of conflict. There’s nothing in those texts indicating a plot against the proggies.

      1. Gustave Lytton

No, but it will still be used by the progs to cow and curtail the police from interfering with their violence in the future.

      2. Heroic Mulatto

In one text Niiya tells Gibson he doesn’t see a need to arrest his assistant, Tusitala Toese, who often brawls with anti-fascist protesters, even if he has a warrant, unless Toese commits a new crime.

“Just make sure he doesn’t do anything which may draw our attention,” Niiya texted Gibson on Dec. 9, 2017. “If he still has the warrant in the system (I don’t run you guys so I don’t personally know) the officers could arrest him. I don’t see a need to arrest on the warrant unless there is a reason.

I wonder if someone else would get the same treatment.

        1. Brochettaward

I suspect if we saw the full context of the conversation, these aren’t friends talking. It’s the leader of their rapid response unit looking to minimize the amount of bullshit he’s going to have to deal with and he doesn’t even know if the guy has a warrant. It’s not his concern at the moment. He’s looking out for his own ass.

          1. Heroic Mulatto

This article gives a bit more context. It’s also worth noting that he plays both sides of the fence:

It’s unknown if Niiya has similar rapports with anyone affiliated with groups that oppose Patriot Prayer. He exchanged hundreds of texts in 2017 with activist June Davies, who at times marched alongside antifa.

Davies at times asked Niiya about friends arrested or under investigation and discussed police presence at activist events, The Oregonian/OregonLive found. Portland police said in 2017 that officers routinely communicate with organizers and activists to determine appropriate police response.

It still seems a bit sketchy to me. It’s like a teacher texting one or more of his/her students. Sure, you can be ‘friendly’, but you’re not supposed to be ‘friends’.

          2. commodious spittoon

Oh, and I suppose banging is totally out of the question, narc.

I’m too lazy to look it up. Were the subsidies straight handouts or were they tax breaks contingent on meeting certain goals? If it’s the latter, then NYC isn’t really saving $3B.

      1. Rhywun

There’s some overview I got here – not definitive in any way but this guy is pretty on-the-level and there’s lots of links if you want to dig more further than I cared to.

Bonus quotes at the bottom from the “activists” are hilarious.

          This is awesome:

“If we invest in Amazon — if our government and our schools invest in Amazon, our money is funding displacement,” Mauricio Piratova from Queens Neighborhoods United (QNU) and former LaGuardia Community College student told the audience. “We’re funding the invasion of our land, the erasure of our culture…”

Sounds like he wants a wall.

          1. Rhywun

            the erasure of our culture

I remember back in the day before /. went all leftist. Every once in a while you’d have someone talk about unionizing, and get smacked down immediately by a group of people of which none of them believed they were below average.

        1. Rhywun

none of them believed they were below average

Exactly. The whole point of unions any more is to remove any incentive for making sure you’re not below average.

I once quit – and took it back on day 8 or 9 of my last two weeks after hearing a lot of my colleagues begging me to reconsider.

It was all over a monster boss I’ve mentioned before; one of those “rule by fear” types. I stayed. He moved to Virginia a few months later to terrorize some other unfortunates.

Tulip, I hope it works out.

        1. Our monster boss got fired and had to be removed with a police escort.

        2. slumbrew

I flat-out quit a new job over a dickhead boss, VP then brought me to a Hooters and convinced me to stay – I still have the cocktail napkin where he wrote down the things that got me to stay (no longer report to dickhead plus some more money, basically).

The guy I was (briefly) working for was the worst; VP thought so too but had somehow gotten saddled with him due to some BS political nonsense.

Mojeaux – after you mentioned LIW in the lynx thread, I wanted to ask if you’d read (and if not, make sure you knew about) Libertarians on the Prairie. To me, reading about the dynamic between Laura & Rose was at least as (if not more) interesting than making the case that Laura was at least a proto-Libertarian.

        1. Mojeaux

          Thank you!!!!

I have never seen that book, but the relationship between Laura and Rose, as compared to the relationship between Laura and Ma, always fascinated me, too. My mother is LIW’s biggest squeeing fangirl and does not like knowing these things.

          On my list.

I think it’s Cato that categorizes Rose, Rand, and Paterson as the mothers of libertarianism, so I suppose that would make Laura the proto.

          4. Brochettaward

Has anyone ever told you how to make Irish Water? It’s a simple recipe. You start with a glass. Any kind will do. Then you need a handle of whiskey. Put the glass away and drink the whiskey.

          5. Nephilium

Well fuck, that’s just uisce beatha. I’ve had that recipe down for years.

          6. Brochettaward

Are you sure you’re drinking it fast enough? That’s really the key to the whole thing.

          7. Nephilium

I need to drink faster? Alright, I’ll give it a try.

    8. Count Potato

Well, as long as you didn’t quit yet, you still have it, right?

    9. Gender Traitor

Tulip, I’m coming up on nineteen years at the current gig, with the same boss for almost all of that time. I’ve thought of quitting many a time, but I get over it. It helps that though the boss & I piss each other off on a fairly regular basis, there’s a foundation of mutual respect there. It also helps that I’d rather be dragged by my hair naked over broken glass than go through the job hunting process, but that’s just introverted me.

      Whatcha writing about?

      1. Nephilium

I was ten years at my last job and hated the last three years of the position. There was no opportunity for advancement, raises were under 2% a year (unless the boss could make an extraordinary argument) and the warnings we provided to the business were ignored.

They still have a call center that bases their staffing on employee preference instead of what’s needed, and have average handle times over 90 minutes in the busy season. I’m much happier taking a demotion to the new job with a 20% pay raise.

        1. Gustave Lytton

a call center that bases their staffing on employee preference instead of what’s needed, and have average handle times over 90 minutes

What color is the sky on their planet?

          1. Nephilium

For once, I don’t want to know. The managers at that call center had never worked a call center before (one was a lawyer, the other ran a help desk). It was well known in the lower levels of the company that they were incompetent, but they had been there for a while, so they obviously knew how things worked.

One of the first complaints they had when I was there switching them over to the new phone system was that they were getting too many calls. That’s because they’re old telecom guy had the queues just dump calls to a busy signal once 25 calls were in queue. We expected them to answer calls in queue. The truly frightening thing was that they didn’t even know their cost (or revenue) per call.

I’m glad to be out of that environment.

I’m assuming all three have money and have lawyered up with at least respectable representation. Assuming they aren’t enemies, I don’t know if the cops are going to be able to force the matter here.

My own guess is that they simply didn’t have enough to continue to hold them and they couldn’t charge them.

        2. Playa Manhattan

To be clear, I don’t actually care what happens to Smollet. He’s an unstable liar, and behaved as such.

What I do care about is the corporate media and politicians who absolutely knew that this was bullshit, and pushed the narrative anyway. Scum.

          1. KSuellington

They were actually stupid enough to believe that it wouldn’t get disproven. They were betting on CPD being inept enough not to follow through, and even with a shakey story, it would remain unproven and therefore true. Their mistake was that it was so massively obvious a fake it couldn’t be true as told.

          2. cyto

I’ve been on the media thing for quite a while, and what is really worrying me now is that so very few people seem concerned about it.

This last couple of months of propaganda has begun to delve into blood libel levels of evil. They’ve been pushing “white male Trump supporters are evil, racists who will attack minorities anywhere, any time” for quite a while now, full time. The catholic school boys vs fake Vietnam vet Native Elder was ridiculous and they just kept pushing it – and then backed away without comment.

Event after event, they push the “we all know they are all a bunch of racists” narrative, and they don’t even bother to get real events.

The demonization of a group of people as a political gambit is an old game, and it usually doesn’t end well. The fact that this particular belief set is being taught as religion in our colleges only complicates things further.

But since nobody else is worried about it, maybe I should just check my privilege.

  17. Stinky Wizzleteats

    Several interesting graphs:

    https://www.visualcapitalist.com/crime-rate-perception-gap/

Does the crime rate match the perception of the crime rate?

*hint* fuck no, things are much better

    1. Nephilium

Hell, I had a newbie on a help desk say that (a relatively safe part – South Euclid) of Cleveland was the most dangerous city in the country. I laughed at him, and asked him to go to the bad parts of LA, New York, or New Orleans as a comparison.

      1. Stinky Wizzleteats

Throw in Detroit, Philadelphia, and Atlanta and we agree.

      2. Rhywun

Crime is down like 80% even in the worst parts of NYC.

From stealing with guns to stealing with taxes?

        2. l0b0t

Indeed. In 2005, I moved from the French Quarter, New Orleans to Crown Heights, Brooklyn and was totally overwhelmed with how safe and quiet NYC is compared to NOLA. New Orleans has packs of feral dogs (both I and a neighbor lost cats to a marauding bunch) and packs of nearly-feral teens. NYC seems to have those behind in the 1970s.

If Trump thoroughly stole and bitch slapped the proggies with the fake news narrative here stateside, it remains potent just about everywhere else:

International “fake news” committee to demand testimony from tech giants

An unprecedented group of international lawmakers investigating “fake news” is set to demand a public meeting with an extraordinary collection of leaders from the world’s largest tech companies. The “International Grand Committee” — a collection of members of parliaments from countries around the world investigating disinformation, fake news and election meddling — is set to hold its second hearing on May 28, in Ottawa, Canada.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/international-fake-news-investigation-to-demand-testimony-mark-zuckerberg-sheryl-sandberg-jeff-bezos-tim-cook-sundar-pichai/

If only the tech giants actually had some balls.

    1. Stinky Wizzleteats

It looks like the prime requisite for being the head of a tech giant is being to bullshit in front of a bullshit committee that’s pretending to get at the truth.

  19. slumbrew

“Strange Days” on the TV – I remember thinking this was a great movie. Now I’m thinking, “boy, Angela Bassett is a wild over-actor”.

Also, “Juliette Lewis is super-annoying and not particularly attractive”, but, TBF, I thought the same thing at the time.

Finally, Bradley Cooper looks exactly like Ralph Fiennes in this movie.

    1. Rhywun

I like it. I have to suspend disbelief that 2000 is The Future! though.

    2. Nephilium

I love that film. Angela Bassett is still hot, even though she’s over a decade older then me. I had a girlfriend who looked like Juliette Lewis at the time. And I appreciated the twist. I just wish they hadn’t set the year so hard in 2000, add a couple decades on that and the story still works (and the tech makes more sense).

      1. slumbrew

My complaints aside, it holds up really well for something made in 1995.

I didn’t find any problems with Angela Bassett’s acting, and thought Juliette Lewis was totally hot.

      1. Rhywun

I didn’t actually remember that Juliette Lewis was in it. ??‍♂️

I do remember Ralph Fiennes being rather fetching, though.

My heart was ripped from my chest in 1993.

I dig the Knights, but they are kind of a weird all-star team. The Sharks have a bunch of great players, but can’t seem to find the magic. Ovi is one of my favorite players, but he got his cup and now I don’t care, even with Oshie there.

We need a Cinderella run. Who’s it gonna be?

        1. Rhywun

I generally follow teams that I have some sort of personal connection to. In the NHL, that means the Sabres and the Rangers.

    3. Spudalicious

Who? What? Your words make no sense.

      1. Playa Manhattan

        Women’s field hockey.

        1. Tundra

          Damn. Good idea Playa!

          Field hockey it is!

    4. hayeksplosives

San Diego Gulls?? I got tickets, baby!! Woot

      1. Tundra

I used to have a Gulls t-shirt. Next time I’m out there, will you take me to a game so I can get another?

        1. hayeksplosives

          Sure thing, man!!

    5. Gustave Lytton
      1. Tundra

        Fuck.

        No.

        1. Tundra

          Whoops. Didn’t notice the link.

          I can work with that…

  21. Stinky Wizzleteats

In a recent thread a lot of the Glibs, including myself, were bewailing the state of popular music:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK7egZaT3hs

I guess it ain’t completely hopeless, these guys are pretty damn good.

    1. Spudalicious

My youngest son is a guitarist on the side who play techno death metal. Yeah, I don’t get it.

      1. Count Potato

        “techno death metal”

Now you’re just making shit up.

          1. Tundra

He shouldn’t wear so much eye makeup. It makes him look cheap.

            I like the music, though.

          2. Rhywun

            I’m not feeling the techno.

    2. Stinky Wizzleteats

Wait, that was ten years ago? Nevermind.

      1. Tundra

        Lol.

There’s plenty of great music pretty much anytime. I’ve been listening tonight to a band called 4 Eyes that I heard about here. Album is from 2004 and they have all of 39 followers on Spotify. And they’re great.

Every single day, someone is making beautiful sounds. I completely reject the “music today sucks” thesis.

        1. Stinky Wizzleteats

Yeah, I agree, I’m just stirring the pot. That being said, the ’70s were the best music decade and those of you that disagree are communist bastards.

          1. l0b0t

Except for that part of the 1970s where white folk went and ruined Disco – Brothers Gibb, I’m looking at you.

          2. Watch Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (a hilariously awful movie) and listen to their rendition of “Nowhere Man”. They had the three-part harmony to pull it off.

        2. Old Man With Candy

4 Eyes? Is that Seela Misra’s group?

    3. Rhywun

I remember that song when it came out. Honestly have no idea how “popular” they are. In any event, I have zero problems finding all kinds of great new music. The main difference is I don’t find it by listening to the radio or any current radio-analogue.

      1. slumbrew

I know that song, and the band, therefore they were quite popular.

I’m still listening to Kruder & Dorfmeister, and Nikka Costa, so if I know it, it’s hit pretty big.

        1. Rhywun

I know they were popular enough that other bands mentioned here recently are being compared to them, FWIW.

        2. Is that Dorf “The Dwarf” Dorfmeister?
Tell him he owes me money.

          1. slumbrew

The K&D Sessions is a seminal piece of electronic music, IMO. All remixes, but originals in their own right.

I love the Lamb so much.

          2. KSuellington

Yup, it is indeed. Have you ever listened to another Suzuki? It’s an old Dorfmeister project. Excellent stuff.

            https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mNk9cbJqtjs

          3. slumbrew

I bought the CD when it was released 🙂

Tosca never quite got to the K&D level for me. dZihan & Kamien were the closest to that K&D magic that I’ve found.

          4. Gustave Lytton

I like their Chocolate Elvis album.

          5. slumbrew

I have a distinct memory of listening to Opera (the album w/ Chocolate Elvis on it) on my fancy MP3 CD player (for you youngsters: a portable CD player that could play CDs filled with MP3s) while flying to… Germany, maybe? Good times.

NB: tech is so much better now.

          6. Gustave Lytton

Yes! That’s the album. I found it from Elvis Mitchell’s podcast, where he used it as theme music.

          7. slumbrew

I’d be remiss in not mentioning Brazilification while talking about seminal remix albums.

          8. KSuellington

Good stuff. I agree on Chocolate Elvis and Fila B are great. Never heard that one. It’s going in the mix.

This guy is one of my favorite Brazilians from the 70’s
            https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T8VPn_h7ApI

          9. slumbrew

That’s pretty great. I suspect you can draw a direct line between Bossa Nova & Downtempo.

          10. KSuellington

They share a great deal. You have very good musical tastes. I love it all. Nowadays we have every song available, it is unbelievable riches.

      2. Chafed

I miss turning on the radio to discover something new and great.

        1. Rhywun

Enh. If I missed it, I could easily get a similar experience on Pandora et al.

Turns out I much prefer word-of-mouth or website recommendations. We tend to forget that listening to the radio also meant sitting through tons of crap waiting to hear something good.

      1. Rhywun

        +1 cheerleader chick

        1. Tundra

          Is she someone?

          1. Rhywun

No idea. I just remember giggling over that phrase every time I heard the song.

          2. Gustave Lytton

Sarah Sebestyn. She had her own very minor career later on.

            https://youtu.be/PJs3PTnR2gM

            Just turn your computer sideways.

          3. Tundra

Apparently she peaked in the Nada Surf video.

          4. Gustave Lytton

Well for some, high school is the best it gets.

          5. Rhywun

            Rub it in. ?

    4. KSuellington

I love the Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band

    Random bottom of thread thought:

The go to phrase for describing the media is “double down”, but I think a better poker phrase is “go on tilt”. Doubling down is part of going on tilt, however, there’s more to it than that. Once you are “on tilt” you assume that your opponent’s hand is crap and even if it isn’t, you’re gonna bluff your way to the pot. The problem is that once your opponent correctly identifies your “on tilt, you’re fucked.
The Covington, Buzzfeed Cohen report, Smollett debacle all happened after we knew the media was on tilt. We know beforehand that they’ll double down and if you consider normie public opinion as the chips in the pot, they lose.

    1. straffinrun

Tell me this doesn’t describe the MSM.

      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1BiJZjMUU6Q

    2. Stinky Wizzleteats

The normies read the headline, remember it, and that’s it. The Primacy Effect holds true:

      https://psychology.iresearchnet.com/social-psychology/social-cognition/primacy-effect-in-attribution/

      1. straffinrun

That’s where the battle is going to be in the internet age. Trust in media is in the toilet. That’s the first step and we’ve won that battle. Next battle is for alternative media. It’s leaning towards the non hyperactive, but that could change. It’s a fun time to be active online.

“New evidence” according to the CPD pr flak

      https://twitter.com/TomAhernCPD/status/1096610696522055681?s=20

      1. straffinrun

This is great example of the media tilting. How many normies are going to continue trusting them when it’s easily provable that they lied to them? I have enough faith in the American public that they’ll be pissed when they find out the media pulled another fast one on them. Even if my faith is misplaced, what other strategy is there?

        1. Gustave Lytton

Gell Man Amnesia as the next story queues up.

Defeatists! Stiff up lips, boys. We’re not in bomb shelters yet.

          2. KSuellington

As a child of the 70s/80’s that is not a small thing. There was still the lingering expectation that the Russians were going to nuke us, like literally.

          3. KSuellington

I have that album and haven’t listened to it in maybe ten years. Great stuff.

          4. KSuellington

            “Against the 70’s!!!”

          5. 61North

            Yeah.

Reading an article about an employer was a complete mindfuck when the author, who called multiple times, got even the most basic facts and names wrong. This wasn’t even malice, but sheer incompetence. I can only image what the author would have written if she had an axe to grind.

          6. Rhywun

            So you’re not gay?! NTTAWWT.

          7. 61North

“Six simple words: I’m not gay, but I’ll learn”

  23. 61North

I made it home to Anchorage tonight due to a miraculously timed weather break that allowed the plane to land and take off in a narrow window of not total garbage weather. It was a BYOB flight, so it went by quickly.

    1. KSuellington

I thought those flights were a thing of the past. Where were you flying from if you don’t mind my asking?

      1. 61North

They are, kind of. Apparently if you bring booze on flights the attendant can open the beverage and pour it for you to make it above board. So if you throw some airplane bottles in your carry-on, then you’re good.

I was out in the Aleutians for work, so things are pretty relaxed and there’s sure as hell no TSA bullshit.

      2. Gustave Lytton

It’s totally dependent on airline policy. Some will serve BYOB, some won’t. I hear more and more flight attendants announce that you can’t drink your own booze per the FAA as part of the on safety brief. That’s incorrect. The FAA just prohibits you from serving your own alcohol.
