Let see if I remember how to do this…its been far too long.
Chris Sale is out for the year, and with him go the 2019 Red Sox chances. The Astros dangled the AL West at the Athletics last week but hopefully snatched it back away a little yesterday. Let’s just hope Carlos Correa isn’t injured after leaving early. The Yankees and Dodgers are effectively waiting on the playoffs. And the NL Central is gonna be fun down the stretch. Oh, yeah…and football is around the corner with the preseason AP Poll being released yesterday. (If there’s anything less useful in the sports world, I’m not sure what it is. Except for maybe the Phoenix Coyotes.)
If you were born on this date, you share it with the following: Antarctica discoverer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, Ohioan Benjamin Harrison, writer H.P. Lovecraft, poet Salvatore Quasimodo, boxing promoter Don King, genius politician Ron Paul, sociopath Slobodan Milosevic, Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, (once-)fat guy Al Roker, “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, and “Dumbass” Demi Lovato. Happy Birthday!
OK, let’s see what’s happening as I bring you…the links!
LOL, oh England. What the hell happened to you? Let this be a warning to all those dumbasses who say people don’t get locked up for petty things.
I assume by “mistakes”, she means stealing their heritage for personal gain at the expense of someone else. But don’t worry, Indians. She’s gonna cleanse herself by giving you a bunch of free shit taken from people that never wronged you.
If you’re gonna shill bid, at least be discrete. You’re killing the otherwise sterling reputation of us auctioneers, :-0.
Chicago Teachers Union steps in shit. And they could have done it by traveling to San Francisco for less than half the price of visiting Venezuela.
And in the latest installment of “Wow, the timing here sure is convenient”, Jeffrey Epstein signed his new will two days before he died. I wonder where his interesting art will end up?
Well that’s it. Except for this, obviously. Have a great day, friends!
“LOL, oh England. What the hell happened to you? Let this be a warning to all those dumbasses who say people don’t get locked up for petty things.”
At least they didn’t choke her to death.
Yeah, Eric Garner died because he was suspected of selling “loosies”.
XOMG, someone could have a cigarette!!
He made the mistake of getting in between the State and their tax money.
That’s the state’s story and they’re sticking to it.
Thing is, if the cigs weren’t brought in from another state, then the taxes were paid anyway.
That’s not the worst of it. Then the inevitable newborn that will inhale the 2nd hand smoke. Won’t somebody think of the children?
A bit late with the reply, but he wasn’t arrested for selling loosies when he was killed. There was a fight between two other guys and the store owner called the cops. By the time they got there, the guys had left. there were some other people there, including Garner. He had been arrested before numerous times for selling loosies, but had nothing to do with his arrest that day, other than the fact that the cops recognized him from previous arrests. The witnesses on the scene told the cops that Garner had actually broken up the fight, but the cops decided they had to arrest somebody, and Garner was that somebody. So it was a false arrest to boot.
Good work, Lou.
England: America’s Future. The more laws passed, the more enforcement. More enforcement = more jail, “accidental” deaths at the hands of the police, abuses, blah blah..
Welcome to Utopia!
England: making Hell pointless
Sloopy! What are you doing here? Good to see ya!

I never left. I just updated my iOS last night and realized I’d been posting the links under Banjos’s name for the last several months. My bad.
Ah-ha! Catfishing us.
Maybe you shouldn’t be using Cisco gear to post the links.
/what I think every time I hear iOS, I blame my line of work.
Wait, there’s a non-Cisco IOS?
I’m slightly surprised Cisco didn’t try to defend that name, it’s not like they’re shy with the lawsuits.
Cisco is too pedantic and didn’t notice because of case sensitivity?
Oh, then Morning Banjos.
That’s what Tulpa would say.
Nonsense, have you seen the costs of visiting San Fran? Venezuela is waay cheaper. Admittedly, there are fewer amenities, less food, and no toilet paper, but a similar chance of random inprisonment on ideological grounds.
I haven’t heard of any public shitting problem in Venezuela, either. No toilet paper, but no public shitting.
Well, you have to eat in order to shit.
You can’t shit in public if you’ve got no food in your belly.
Maybe that’s the solution someone should propose to the San Fran leadership?
Increase the ration of government cheese?
Fuckin’ a with the color coded trash bags. I could totally see California doing that.
If I don’t immediately bring in my bins, my neighbors throw their trash in them. My biggest concern is not that they do this, it’s that I might be cited for it. (I’m not bringing their trash into my house and the city has given itself the authority to fine you if you have trash at the curb outside of the trash day window)
Since my neoghbors are assholes who routinely throw their trash on my margin if there are no cans around, I’d be happier if I could just leave the can out as an anti-littering measure.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G91NsemDTzo
Just put a note on it saying your neighbors are putting their trash in it.
Code enforcement won’t care, revenue is revenue.
You could always do this to them:
https://youtu.be/Wm9wHwCusM0
That’s the way to handle shit like that…
Two of my closest neighbors and I pay a trash service 50 bucks a month to keep a dumpster on my property and to dump it once every two weeks. They dont care what I throw in it.
I don’t have enough space to put a dumpster.
And I’d wager there’s an ordinance against having one except under onerous conditions.
My county has a dump pass for $60/year. You can throw away pretty much anything, but they get bitchy about “construction debris.”
Have you considered accidentally misplacing your bear trap collection on non-trash days?
Booby trap the bins.
If I don’t immediately bring in my bins, my neighbors throw their trash in them.
Are we talking a couple baggies of dog crap or actual bags of trash?
Actual trash ranging from McDonalds bags to rancid meat.
We have blue, green and black bins. The green waste gets composted, the black and blue cans get mixed together anyway. I’ve seen it at the trnasfer station. Technically, we have fines for not seperating the trash, but I’ve never seen one issued, yet.
Our bins go out on different days. I don’t doubt that they all go to the same place, but thankfully it’s just one green bin for trash and one blue bin for “recyclables”
Good news is, I can put the huge slabs of cardboard sticking out of the top of the blue bin and they’ll just take it. Getting the breen bin’s lid to close over the cardboard is a pain.
My City is trying to tag all the bins so that they can track where the “bad” garbage is coming from and to give you helpful alerts if your can isn’t at the curb on pick-up day. Makes about as much sense as all the bike lanes that they built for a place that is winter bound for five months a year and most of the amenities are a three mile ride uphill, including the University.
“Dear City – If my can isn’t at the curb, assume I don’t have any trash to be picked up this week. Don’t bother me over it.”
Well, yeah. They just want to track bad people like me that don’t recycle that which will end up in the landfill anyway.
Your trash is collected by the city? Out here we choose between different “family-run businesses.”
Although a third player came to town and the other two dropped their prices accordingly.
Recycling for me is when I go back on my bike. ‘I’m gonna re-cycle!’
/gently tugs collar. Nervous grin.
We have blue recycle and black trash bins. The black ones get filled with everything, the blue ones are used to store wood blocks in my camper.
We’ve got very nice blue bins for recycling that probably retail for $100, but, really, can you put a price on the employment of our less-capable neighbors? As these things tend to go, when Annapolis first did recycling everything had to be separated, which is a huge pain in the ass, so nobody did it. To sweeten the pot, the city implemented “mixed-stream” recycling, meaning you could just dump anything that was recyclable into a bag and stick it in the recycling bin. Then they made the bins bigger and nicer.
Then they decided that they weren’t going to recycle plastic bags any more, because they get caught in the machines and hand-sorting was too difficult and too labor-intensive. Then they decided it was too difficult for the poor dears to open a garbage bag to get at the recycling, so they won’t take it unless it’s just dumped in the bin piecemeal. So, unless you want a pile of stinking garbage in your kitchen (or wherever you have your indoor trash) you’ve got to basically wash out anything you’re recycling. Also, they now refuse to take any recycling if they suspect it’s “contaminated” by a plastic bag or some rogue marinara. The end result is that it’s a huge pain in the ass to deal with. I’ve wondered if they’re trying to sort of get the best of both worlds: be able to say they’re running a recycling program, charge for it, but then make it so annoying that nobody deals with it.
Our city doesn’t collect trash. But they insist that you not leave any trash bins on the curb, to keep the street looking neat.
I pay a private company $120 for three months of trash & recycling (separate bins).
The city has a yard waste collection though – where you have to keep the bags on the curb. So it won’t be neat when the city collects it – and the yard waste bags are bigger, and/or are loose piles of yard waste which block the street!
so inconsistent.
Same. We have a recycle bin, but its the same truck and they take it to the same place.
Penn and Teller Bullshit were way ahead of this. (Only a 2:30 minute clip).
I think they recanted that one
Only one I was aware they backed down on was the second hand smoke one.
Not saying it isn’t possible, but that’s one that I remember them making an apology about. I remember it mainly because it pissed me off, their entire point was freedom of association and private property, which were the correct positions.
Penn and Teller seem to be recanting waaaay too much since skinny Penn happened.
Loss of nutrients to the brain.
If he can’t do what he wants he no longer sees any reason for other people to be able to do what they want.
Actually I think its a case of TDS
When we lived in Germany, they had very limited curbside recycling pickup. We were required to take most recycling to the local center. The first time I went there I was completely lost – there were dozens of different bins, each with one of the three hundred letter long German words describing what when in the bin. It took me a year or two to figure out what went where. I would usually just take the items, one piece at a time, to the workers to point me at the correct bin.
I never knew there were about 10 different categories of paper/cardboard.
I think Warren should pretend to be an Indian, and go get a job in tech support somewhere.
it would be something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqnFnWSYzaQ
Or maybe like this

They weren’t doing nothing with it. She’s putting it to better use.

It isn’t stealing if she gave it back. Are you calling Warren an Indian Giver?
That Porsche is ugly. I’d rather have one of these Mercedes staff cars.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W31
you know who else…
Built an an off-road limousine with a 305? I’ll have to look it up, but I think at the time Mercedes V8’s were interference engines, which are a pain to rebuild, but it would still be awesome.
Ugh. Interference engines. Ask me about the Honda that I top-end rebuilt twice because the timing belt kept breaking…
Also the two clutch plates because the rear seal was leaky. Never again.
Oh man…..my favorite car I’ve ever owned was a 1985 Prelude. Bought it in 1996 for $2500 cash. I sadly had to put it out to pasture in 2000 because the timing belt broke and pretty much destroyed the engine.
I’ve decided LH has to get one of these. Firstly, it had a tube radio. Secondly, it had four fuel pumps, two electric, and two separate back-up, perfect for relying on guzzoline in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
And the tube radio is powered by a vibrator.
Ah, so the union is feeling some heat, so they have to throw these clowns overboard. And a Charter school has unionized teachers?
The Red Sox never really had any chance this year one they failed to sign a closer. As long as the Yankees don’t win I’ll be happy.

I can’t believe it is August, last week it was May.
I can’t believe I am 51. Well except in the morning. In the morning it is easy to believe.

It’s a coincidence that the EPL just started and CFB is just around the corner. I swear!
Apropos of nothing- I like how people are saying Epstein “cheated justice”.
He robbed them of their show trial and Two Minutes Hate, I guess.

Mass Brawl In Belgrade Nightclub Over Nikola Tesla’s Ethnicity

American.
He left Eastern Europe and did all his important work here.
Nothing new – the Edison / Tesla fisticuffs have been raging in America since 1888.
A couple weekends ago at the Edison museum in West Orange, I saw a Tesla in the parking lot plugged into a charging station. It kind of amused me for some reason.
IT wasn’t a direct current outlet? Sacriledge!
Maybe they should decide Warren’s ethnicity the same way.
Besides, everyone knows Tesla was American. He’s even named after a car.
Never ever ever get involved in an argument that involves Serbian national pride with drunk Serbs. Really really really bad idea.
Never get involved in an argument between Serbians and Croatians. That was the most dangerous racial strife in the Cleveland area Catholic schools through the 90’s.
What were Serbs doing in Catholic schools?
To stay out of the shitty public schools? There’s a couple of private non-Catholic schools, but they cost as much as some colleges.
My dad’s friend goes on a lot of motorcycle trips in that area (he tells me it looks like Greece but is a hell of a lot cheaper). He owns a motorcycle that is registered in Croatia, and sometimes when riding it in Serbia, the locals are very threatening towards him on account of the Croatian plates. He has to go to great efforts to explain that he’s American and he just owns a motorcycle in that country.
Think that holds true for pretty much every Slavic nationality
Get a life.
Don’t mess with Serbia. Years ago I went to a water polo match at the FINA championships between Croatia and Serbia. Montreal riot police (you never see that here) were on the premise. There was that much tension. We sat in a section that was majority Croatian. It was retarded how it felt one wrong move and the whole thing would end up in a brawl.
At one point, there was a drunk French-Canadian making jokes (as they’re apt to do) and the guy behind me tapped me and told me to tell my ‘friend’ to ‘shut up or else’. I looked back and told him, ‘on what planet did you figure he’s my friend?’ The guy wasn’t even fricken Croatian born and he was ready to create an international incident.
Which reminds me of a Croatian girl I dated during the wars in the 90s. One night her extended family was over for dinner and they got to the part about the war. Boy did it turn, they were talking about how they were ready to send their kids (BORN IN CANADA) to go die in the war. Me and her brother could but just shake our heads listening. Retards.
By the way, I diffused the situation by simply telling the guy and his father (decked in their Croatia gear), ‘Guy is drunk and ignorant.’ Subliminally telling them to chill. That pacified the father who just nodded and agreed, ‘Yes. Ignorant’.
A friend’s dad reffed for a rec league soccer league. One day it was a majority Serbian team and a majority Croatian team. He had to cancel the game when neither team had enough players to play about 15 minutes into the game.

“While staying in #Venezuela, we didn’t see a single homeless person.
Everyone is happy and well fed. They all can read, too. Unlike your students.
Also no obesity
“Wherever there is a jackboot stomping on a human face there will be a well-heeled Western liberal to explain that the face does, after all, enjoy free health care and 100 percent literacy.” ― John Derbyshire.
That must be a new talking point. Local Minnesoda Woman pens a column talking about how she went to Norway and Russia for a month and didn’t see any homeless people there either.
Well, in Norway, you only have Norwegians.
In Russia, how can you tell the homeless from the Slavs?
Because it’s too damn cold for homeless people?
So what she’s saying is she wants to state to kill the homeless.
“I didn’t see any homeless at my hotel.”
Sounds like she didn’t even TRY to score any heroin.
“Ma’am, this isn’t Norway, this is only a cruise liner. …”
We need some special camps for the homeless!
“housing insecure”
Is that when you won’t invite people over because you hate your carpet but haven’t replaced it yet?
Residentially challenged.
Housing insecure.
Actually saw that in a Mpls letter in the travel section, re: Norway, etc
Huh. I went to Tokyo for four days and saw plenty of homeless. And they kept their shit straight and neat. What’s the lesson from that?
What’s the situation in those countries with involuntarily committing people with mental issues?
= we don’t lock them in camps/insane asylums against their will
I suspect the real reason for the disparity in homeless numbers has to do with how U.S. cities manage individuals who are housing insecure. We apparently lack the political will, the resources, the imagination, or some combination thereof, to address the problem.
Incredibly, she draws the precise wrongest conclusion you possibly can. The cities who have the political will and have devoted massive resources to the homeless are the ones with the worst homeless problems.
EXACTLY! I’m continually amazed that when somebody sees a homeless person, their first thought is “Government should do something” rather than “How did government fuck over this person?” Usually a tell-tale sign of someone who has experience with government versus someone who has none.
Maybe she is blind? You can’t walk through Oslo without seeing plenty of junkies, they are not even that well behaved.
Walk? Like the Hoi Polloi? Nonsense, she never set foot outside.
The funny part is “spent a month”. I’ve lived in Chicago 50+ years and never saw a person get murdered on the street. Do you really think this person made it a point to walk through the absolute worst neighborhoods of any European city at night?
I see homeless people every day at a few busy intersections. Every single one of them is off the street by nightfall. They have to go somewhere – and they know the places to go much better than I do because they have to. The intersections they tend to “work” are the ones less than a mile from forest preserve because the cops don’t go there. They know where the cops don’t go, something a tourist is extremely unlikely to know – any concierge or hostel employee is going to tell you the safe places to go if you ask. “Central and suburban” train stations are notorious cop hangouts – you have to get into the neighborhoods far enough from the train station to find the homeless, usually within a block or two of any store that sells package spirits.
“Before I go any further in this I want to say this — like anyone who’s been honest with themselves I know I’ve made mistakes. I’m sorry for any harm I’ve caused,” Warren told the audience. “I have learned a lot and I am grateful for the many conversations that we’ve had together. It is a great honor to be able to partner with Indian country and that’s what I’ve tried to do as a senator, and that is what I promise to do as President of the United States of America.”
“Now I’ma grab me a firewater and do a rain-dance.”
I’d have a lot more respect for the injuns if they would have burned her at the stake.
“Prosecutors on Monday moved to dismiss the indictment against Epstein but have said they are considering charging others with facilitating his alleged abuse of dozens of girls”
It’s going to be much harder to go after his co-conspirators now that the star witness against them has been dealt with.

A Visit to the World’s Tiniest Nation
Sorry for going OT so soon (I did read the links! I swear!), but wanted to get this placeholder in.
In the salad poll, Chipper asked for my wife’s potato salad directions. She sent me her recipe, which I will post here once I can type it in on something other than a phone…
This sounds kinky.
I’m a government auditor, and was issued a corresponding personality. I’m about as kinky as a beige painted wall.
Do you hear a British woman narrating in your head?
Unfortunately, no. The voices in my head are a dry, monotone voice reading actuarial tables.
I’m honored to have been chosen as your internal monologue.
That’s pretty darn kinky.
So what grade bureaucrat are you?
That information is above your clearance level, Citizen.
I remember that episode 🙂
But I’m a Grade-A pain-in-the-ass bureaucrat, at least to my supervisors. I’ve been told many times that I’m bordering insubordination – my response has always been “well, I just need to try harder then.”
Only reason I’m still employed is that I’m actually good at my job, even if I rebel against the stupidity of government.
Excellent. I appreciate it!
Kartoffelsalat/ Potato salad
5-7 potatoes. I usually use Yukon Gold
1/3-1/2 cups beef broth
4 Tbsp white vinegar
2 Tbsp yellow mustard (pref: German medium hot). Don’t recommend coarse ground for this
1 Tbsp sugar
2-3 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground pepper
2-3 Tbsp vegetable oil
½ med yellow onion, finely diced (maybe a half cup or so)
Fresh chives, finely chopped
Put potatoes on to boil. About 10 minutes at a full boil should work.
While potatoes are boiling, dice onion and set aside. Then prepare the liquid:
Microwave/heat beef broth until HOT. Add the vinegar, mustard, salt, sugar, pepper, and oil. Stir. You’ll add this to the potatoes later.
When potatoes are cooked through until just done, quickly peel while still very hot. Slice thinly. The potatoes slices may break apart a bit as you handle them, but shouldn’t be mushy.
Gently mix onion into the potatoes.
Pour broth mixture over potatoes/onion.
Add chopped chives to taste.
Refrigerate and let sit for at least a few hours before serving – ideally overnight.
Jeffrey Epstein signed his new will two days before he died.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
I have to say this actually makes me more able to believe he offed himself
Or maybe he was “persuaded” to do a Frank Pentangeli, if he wanted his family to be taken care of.
From what I read, his only relative was a brother. I could be mistaken, but the only references to children and Epstein have been in the pedophillic sense.
What if the Clinton Foundation is the main beneficiary?
The only identified trust has unidentified beneficiaries. We don’t know who’s getting the money.
RE Fake Warren. That was no ‘mistake’. She purposely chose to do that of free will and when she got away with it for all those years didn’t mind she lived a lie.
Fuck her. I hope Natives are ‘furbo’ and read through her.
Sad, really, that no one will ask her exactly what she is apologizing for.
That Porsche is ugly.
Better?
Too bad they didn’t use a wide-angle lens. They could have caught the Ford GT40 that’s undoubtedly in front of it.
WATCH: Pacifica Water Polo Team Sings Nazi Song, Makes Hitler Salute
Nazis…. Nazis everywhere……
In other news, studies show that teen-aged boys are assholes, back to you Bob!
Those ten kids are going to take over the country, and possibly the world. To stop this we should just punch the faces of all of our political rivals.
The whole article is a series of calls for the boys to be punished or reeducated. They did not harm anyone. They, like every teen boy outside adult supervision ever, deliberately did something edgy. Teen boys doing ‘Nazi” stuff is the best evidence possible that Nazi stuff is NOT acceptable in our society. If it weren’t completely taboo they wouldn’t rebel by doing it.
You know who else believed in group punishment for non-crimes?
I wonder how many Che T-shirts are worn at that school and nobody even blinks.
I hope their lives are ruined forever.
Tard Tuesday: Just Like Obama Did When He Jailed Journalists… oh wait….
“he has gone out of his way to destroy their lives”
I musta missed that one. Hell he hasn’t even had any of his enemies prosecuted.
And yet, mysteriously, all his enemies remain alive
He should hire some of those “consultants” the Clinton team uses to deal with pesky problems…
He gave them eonugh rope to hang themselves. The horror!
Or even spied on and framed for crimes….
Which is exactly what the Obama administration did in their “investigation” of Russian attempts to infiltrate the Trump campaign. Turns out, the only infiltration was people they sent there. And they actually attempted to frame one member of the campaign for taking illegal payments from overseas.
What is strange about this isn’t that it happened, it is that this is all public knowledge and yet nobody in the press seemed to notice. Guy makes Nixon look like a piker….
The Obama admin’s weaponized 3 letter government bureaucracies went out of their way to entrap political enemies of the democratic party. They ran a bunch of failed entrapment operations for political purposes, and did son in the usual inept manner of totalitarian asshats. I suspect that Trump and the people that they targeted because of their relationship to him are not the only recipients of this treatment: these victims of the nefarious deep state related to Trump are only the one instance those of us paying attention are aware of, because the crooks got caught with their pants down. I would not be surprised to find out this happened to many others that didn’t realize at all they were basically taken down by illegal activity from their own government for partisan political reasons.
Maybe it happened (and is still happening) to John Roberts. Sure would explain a lot of things.
I would not be surprised to find out this happened to many others that didn’t realize at all they were basically taken down by illegal activity from their own government for partisan political reasons.

Trump’s bluster and rhetoric is magic I guess.
Justice will finally be served.
I don’t think “justice” means what you think it means.
Oh noes!
Under Mounting Pressure From Snopes, Babylon Bee Writers Forced To Admit They Are Not Real Journalists
As Snopes turns up the heat on The Babylon Bee, its writers were finally forced to admit that they are not real journalists.
In a statement issued Monday, Babylon Bee’s editorial team confessed they have been making up their stories this entire time.
“The headlines, the copy, the quotes—they’re all fake,” said the site’s editor in chief, hanging his head in shame. “It started a few years ago. We made up a few stories about church culture, some about politics, some about everyday life, just for fun.” But the EIC said that things quickly got out of hand, as their completely made-up stories started going viral.
“It all happened so fast,” he said. “We just wanted to have a little fun and make some jokes, and I guess it got out of hand.”
Sources confirmed The Babylon Bee even hired a professional Photoshop guy full time to fabricate images of events that did not actually occur, such as Joe Biden getting hit with a blue shell, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez going on The Price is Right and guessing that everything is free, Ruth Bader Ginsburg coming back as a cyborg, and monkeys throwing poop at each other in the Senate’s chambers.
“Yeah, you caught me,” said the site’s creative director somberly. “I take real images and combine them using a program called Photoshop. None of it actually happened. I am ashamed.” He said he even used his considerable artistic talents to depict Trump body-slamming the queen of England, Bernie Sanders stealing kids’ Halloween candy, and even create a fake new VeggieTales character who is a marijuana plant.
The Fake News Police then showed up at The Babylon Bee’s headquarters and hauled away their team of writers and editors. Their computers were seized as evidence, though reports indicate they attempted to destroy phones, hard drives, and over 30,000 fake news stories before authorities arrived.
These guys are my heroes.
Can we get snopes to verify this article?
“False: It was 29,998 fake news articles”
“Mostly True:
There’s no such thing as ‘Fake News Police’. We’re called Snopes.”
Related.
Last month, the satire site The Babylon Bee lawyered up after liberal fact-checker Snopes tried to deplatform it by calling it “fake news” and suggesting the Babylon Bee did not rise to the level of satire. The Babylon Bee’s lawyer sent a demand letter, and Snopes altered the offending article. But last week, Snopes unloaded two more attacks on the Bee, and the Bee vowed to keep fighting back.
“Snopes is at it again. We had hoped that a demand letter from our attorneys would prompt changes. And it seemed to. Snopes did go back and edit their defamatory fact-check, revising some of the language that suggested we were deliberately misleading people. However, they’ve subsequently published a new rating for satire called ‘Labeled Satire,'” the Bee said in an email to subscribers.
“Their explanation of this rating says the label ‘satire’ is often misapplied to content that doesn’t really qualify as satire — and Snopes has made it clear that they feel our content falls into that category,” the Bee continued. “From their view, we’re just pretenders, using the label ‘satire’ to our advantage so we can hoodwink the masses. It’s really extraordinary, especially since they’ve acknowledged in private communication with us that there is a ‘clear distinction’ between our satire and intentionally misleading fake news. For some reason, they refuse to acknowledge the clear distinction in their published articles.”
Snopes really is just a couple of partisan lefty cunts.
I hope they barbecue those sons of bitches. Babylon Bee is clearly satire. Snopes is an unintentionally satirical lapdog posing as an ombudsman.
DNC operatives are gonna DNC operate, man.
And yet Snopes has never, not once, debunked a single Hat & Hair or Subaru Horror story. That means they’re all true, right?
Newt Gingrich, a three-star Air Force general and former publicist for Michael Jackson and Prince want to create a $2 billion sweepstakes to see who can establish and run the first lunar base
https://twitter.com/politico/status/1163476975048114178
So is Newt Gingrich a three star Airforce general or are there 3 people involved?
Just one guy, Newt is both a 3 star general and the former publicist. Really talented guy.
This is why the Oxford comma is important.
Naw, you just need to be aware of subject order.
A former publicist for dead musicians, a three-star air force general and Newt Gengrich want…
In this case, if it was one guy there would be a comma after “Prince” and “want” would be “wants”.
/pedant
Yes, and that is just a couple of typos. Occam’s razor and all.
3 people

All you have to do is leave that fakeness and just go into the towns as I did on a moped. Abject poverty.
And even then you still get the odd moron claim Cuba is awesome.
The unintentional irony is that Cuba has such a high literacy rate that everybody there can read the signs posted that say “we have no food” in all the shops outside the Havana tourist traps.
To bolster the comment about taking the state tour, please see the vice guide to North Korea. It is one of the most amazing things you will ever see, and gives you a special appreciation for exactly how dumb people like Sean Penn have to be to let these people fool them.
People WANT to be deceived.
Why do you think movies are so popular?
“How can four public school teachers go to Venezuela and declare all is well? I just don’t get the mindset at play here.”
Because to these people, starving, living in 3rd world conditions, being prosecuted by a tyrannical government, and having no future get canceled out if they can claim very high levels of literacy and free healthcare (despite the fact said free healthcare lacks all access to modern tech or medication of any kind, and amounts mostly to people being put on waiting lists to see doctors that may or not have an old stethoscope they share).
I have a coworker who is young, smart and as dumb as a bag of rocks when t comes to her lefty causes. She saved money to go down there, and there was a part of me that hoped it would open her eyes. How could you see the misery and destruction and not walk away with a different mindset?
Nope. Came back more committed to a socialist revolution in this country than ever.
And they’re fricken teaching kids!
teaching, I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
Confirmation bias is powerful.
Continuing the Andy Ogletree saga from yesterday: As part of winning the Am, he gets an invite to next year’s Masters, US Open, and British Open. At the Masters, he will play the first 2 rounds with the defending champion: Tiger Woods. When Kuchar won his Am in 1997, he played the 1998 Masters with defending champion…Tiger Woods.
After his 5 Am titles, greatest golfer in history Bobby Jones (Hi, Sloopy, missed you on this discussion yesterday) had to go invent the Masters tournament.
Another point in my argument:
Tiger’s tourney: Which one is it?
Jack’s tourney: The Memorial, which is a big deal.
Bobby’s tourney: The Masters. Checkmate.
Yeah but Tiger banged more super model types in one week than Jack and Bobby had in their entire lifetime.
We don’t know that. Things were happening in the 20s.
Red Flag laws in action. If somebody with the same name is red-flagged, you lose your Constitutional rights as well.
The John Smiths of the world give a collective sigh.
I used to work with someone named John Smith. He was on the no-fly list because well… there is apparently another John Smith out there who is on the list. So he has to prove that he’s not _that_ John Smith every time he gets on a plane.
Finally, an advantage to having an unusual last name.
“We’re not stopping enough attacks”
“Put anyone with a strange surname on the no-fly list”
Second.
America. Where you loose your rights to a list of first and last names.
I have the same issue. Every time I fly back into the US, I get to the immigration terminals where you enter your info and inevitably I get a slip with a big “X” on it, shunting me over into the line with the foreign nationals. During one trip, I was standing in line holding my brown “official” passport issued to government employees traveling on orders. A TSA agent noticed the passport and questioned why I was in the full review line. They pulled me out and looked up my info. Apparently there is someone with the same first and last names, but different middle name and birthdate, on the no-fly list.
My name is pretty common, but not to the John Smith level. TSA agent told me that a supervisory agent could fix it in the system for me, but there wasn’t one there at the time with the appropriate level of access. I’m positive they only offered this to me because I outranked everyone that was there, and that if I was just an ordinary “citizen” I wouldn’t have even been told this…
Is a supervisory TSA agent the one who actually got through high school?
No. They passed the written exam.
The no fly list is an unconstitutional abomination that shouldn’t exist in the first place.
That’s why I try to keep my name a secret.
“It all happened so fast,” he said. “We just wanted to have a little fun and make some jokes, and I guess it got out of hand.”
Making jokes and having fun- the greatest sin of all.
Especially if you’re making jokes about the wrong people.

Lol, I started down the rabbit hole on this one and have found the following claims online:
1. Thy is used where you would use your, thine where you would use yours
2. Thy is used before consonants, thine before vowels (a/an)
3. (The one I had learned years ago and was basing my comment on) Thy, and sometimes thine, can be used for the genitive case, but possessive calls for thine.
I don’t even know what a “genitive case” is.
Property of (as in trait or relation) rather than possessive which is straight ownership. Thy interest in painting miniatures rather than thine miniatures.
Better explanation here.

It was accurate for the initial Antifa, which were just the communist party stormtroopers in the Weimar. Their main opponant was the SA, who had more WWI veterans and was better at street fighting. Doesn’t mean they’re in favor of anything good.

Anything was gonna be an upgrade. I see how he got confused, but you don’t marry the genderfluid party girl.
Which reminds me of the story of a bachelor party.
It was 1998, South Beach. Peak hedonism South Beach. So we went out to the clubs on South Beach, with plans to hit a strip club later.
At this really trendy club we park ourselves in a circle next to the dance floor holding our drinks and telling stories, as one does at a bachelor party. About that time a couple of straight-up supermodels start getting more and more suggestive on the dance floor right next to us. They eventually start making out – hands under skirts and everything.
Well, that got some attention. Basically everyone stopped what they were doing to watch the show. Clothes started coming off. Things quickly escalated past vanilla porn.
And about the time that the brunette was wrist deep in the blond, the little guy who was in charge of organizing the bachelor party taps his wristwatch and says “Hey, if we are gonna make it to the strip club, we’d better get going…”
And then?
Well, unlike Penthouse Letters, they did not invite me to join them. And we have been relentlessly ridiculing Mr. “we gotta get going” for 20 years.
But did the brunette lose her wristwatch?
At a bachelor party I saw two strippers go down on each other. There was a collective hush as if everyone was afraid to break the spell.
I have only been to a couple of bachelor parties with strippers, but I assumed that was standard. But yes, it tends to get quiet during that portion of the show.
Most of ’em I went to were for poor punk rockers. They could only afford one stripper.
Once – the stripper was a cousin of one of the attendees. “Hey, cuz!” He stepped out during her performance.
I guess it was old hat for him?
One of my fraternity parties had a stripper who was married to one of the brothers.

EU Backs no-deal Brexit.
They’re going to make it as difficult as possible simply to deter any others from attempting it. This was a foregone conclusion from the beginning if they couldn’t derail it altogether.
If that was the plan, then driving the UK to the best possible outcome is a counterproductive strategy. Any deal benefits the EU and hurts the UK by tying it to Brussels in some manner.
Agreed. No-deal Brexit is the best possible result.
And if they are smart (heh) they have a free trade agreement lined up with the commonwealth nations and the US by the time it happens.
Well, the US at least has been having talks, but we don’t know what’s actually being said in those meetings.
What do you need talks for? Just Company B trading with Company U is pretty much all it takes. Yeah, the two governments want to angle their way in between, but if it gets too difficult, you go to your government and ask WTF? The problem with the EU is if you ask that, you are forced into a labyrinth of bureaucracy and eventually find the answer is FYTW; it’s not like you can gin-up a campaign against the EU since you can’t actually elect any of its bureaucracy.
The EU is literally taxation without representation – even the Brits got fed up with it.
Because the existing trade barriers require agreement/legislation to remove.
I get that you prefer it not be so, but that’s just how it is.
My point is you can go to your legislator. A little bribe, er, campaign donation, and they may try to do something. If not, toss money toward his opponent.
In the EU, there are no opponents. People and currency can cross borders freely, but goods cannot – the exact opposite of the what people thought they were getting with an economic union.
Even the Brits who originally supported the EU concept hedged their bets by not eliminating their currency. They were absolutely right not to trust those fuckers and only the life-long bureaucrats – who unfortunately have far too much power – are remainers. And that’s because they are scared shitless what will happen to their cushy jobs should a no-deal Brexit happen.
God forbid war break out in Europe while a Democrat is in the White House,
Supposedly Pelosi is going to block any free trade agreements because of the Good Friday accords.
Yep – EU is going to be nasty and irreconcilable like a bad divorce. They have “nothing to lose” – at least from their limited viewpoint.
And I have no idea why the UK sits and takes it. But I’m not a politician.
It’s because the politicians are largely remainer while the people are going more leave. I don’t trust Boris, but he may be doing the political calculus of pretend populism and might deliver something to garner a longer tenure in office for himself.
We’ll see come november if the UK finally makes its overdue break.
And the civil service even more so.
They have “nothing to lose”
I suspect heavy restrictions on trade with Britain will cost the EU plenty.
at least from their limited viewpoint.
True enough – the EUrocrats are limited enough in their thinking to not realize/not care the damage that being punitive with Britain will do to EU residents. It won’t affect their perks and privileges, so what do they care?
It’s a bold strategy Cotton that the DNC have been tying for three years now.
How US cities are scrambling to protect people from extreme heat
My wife and I were just talking about how it’s been a relatively mild summer. One heat wave in late July that never hit 100 degrees isn’t bad for NJ.
Yeah it’s been pretty mild here too. A few hot days but nothing past ~90 this past month. High of 89 today… and then a stretch of the 70s. Favorite time of summer.
Same here. Mildest summer in years.
We have had a real mild summer in “The People’s Republic of Connecticut” this year, but the last week or so has been above 85 degrees (we hit 90 a couple of days) with high humidity and everyone is talking as if this summer has been apocalyptically hot now. What a bunch of fucking tools.
I’ve lived near DC and in Dallas. Dallas summers are more tolerable, and the winters are basically tied. This scaremongering needs to be cranked up to have the desired effect.
Whoever wrote that is an idiot.
First, Miami is surrounded by ocean. It stays pretty close to 90 degrees year round..
And Mexico City is up so high that it is temperate year round.
Plus, nobody who lives anywhere other than the northeast thinks the northeast climate is desirable.
I freely admit it gets too hot in the summer in the Northeast.
But the furnace heat of the rest of the nation is worse.
When I retire it will be out to the hills or mountains where it rarely gets hot and people don’t built strip malls and office buildings.
The problem with the Northeast is people go to work in air-conditioned buildings and then go back home to their 200-year old 5-story buildings with no air conditioning and sub-par insulation.
DC has ALWAYS been a fucking steam bath in the summer. We would go up there to do touristy stuff about a once a year when I was a kid. There’s a picture in my parents’ house from the summer of ’86 or ’87 in front of the Capitol, and I looked like I had just stepped out of a blast furnace – hair wet with sweat, face beet-red, etc.
Nobody was supposed to inhabit that awful swamp year-round! Members of Congress were supposed to show up for a few months in the winter, do the People’s business, get on their horses and ride home before the planting season.
I say we ban air conditioning in DC in order to combat global warming. The less (better) government that results will be a nice fringe benefit.
It is odd how there seems to be about a 10-13 week period every year when people get worked up about the heat. I wonder what could cause that? Must be Global Warming.
Nice job. Make the predictions so far out that nobody will remember when it doesn’t come to pass (and you’ll be retired and probably dead by the time 2080 rolls around).
Also note the phrase “researchers found“. Not predicted, not guessed, but FOUND. It’s Settled Science™.
“By 2080, researchers recently found, Washington DC’s climate will resemble what northern Mississippi or Dallas is like currently.”
Sure it will. ?
Meanwhile in minnesoda, I’ve run my A/C precisely 2 days so far this summer, and even then, mainly to kill the humidity.
I had to empty two buckets of humidity this summer.
Then again, I live next to a river.
In a van?
No. Nor am I a motivational speaker.
I used mine 2-3 weeks, the missus and all. The cooling air settles in the basement and it’ll be very cool downstairs, like 68, while upstairs is 78.
ah yes, I guess my bachelor privilege is showing. That, and the fact that I’m a fairly cold-blooded programmer who works at home, in a basement office.
It’s pretzel logic, all the way down
TW: Newsweak
An ex-Antifa member is calling out the group, claiming that the far-left group is “trying to hurt” and “harass” and that its actions should be designated as “domestic terrorism.”
President Donald Trump and some Republican lawmakers have pushed for labeling the decentralized left-wing group’s activists, who fight back against far-right white nationalism and fascism, as terrorists. But unlike white nationalists and supporters of the far-right, Antifa members have never been responsible for any deaths, although they routinely brawl with far-right demonstrators at protests.
Nonetheless, Gabriel Nadales, who now works with the conservative Leadership Institute, views the ideology and its activists as a significant threat.
——
There have been numerous mass shootings and domestic terrorism attacks carried out by far-right white supremacists. Most recently, 21-year-old Patrick Crusius allegedly drove to El Paso, Texas, to carry out a mass shooting in a local Walmart. A manifesto linked to the shooting referred to a “Hispanic invasion of Texas.” Investigators also told ABC News that he later told them that “he wanted to shoot as many Mexicans as possible.” Twenty-two people were killed in the attack, while more than two dozen others were injured.
White supremacy-related violence, hate crimes and hate groups are on the rise nationally. An FBI report showed that hate crimes increased by 17 percent from 2016 to 2017, marking the third straight year of a rise in hate crimes. The Anti-Defamation League reported that extremist-related murders spiked 35 percent between 2017 and 2018, “making them responsible for more deaths than in any year since 1995.” Right-wing extremists carried out every one of those murders.
Despite the data about the the growing threat of white supremacist violence, Trump and other Republican leaders constantly equate Antifa’s actions with violent right-wing groups.
Wasn’t that kid in Texas also on the “kkkorporations are kkkilling us” bandwagon? Why don’t they obsess about that? It’s all about defining the terms and controlling the narrative.
“unlike white nationalists and supporters of the far-right, Antifa members have never been responsible for any deaths, although they routinely brawl with far-right demonstrators at protests.” So they’re just ineffectual?
White supremacy-related violence, hate crimes and hate groups are *on the rise* nationally.
Blood. Pressure. Rising.
“who fight back against far-right white nationalism and fascism”
No, they don’t.
They’re good because we cast their Actions as good.
Hey, didn’t you see that video of them fighting back against far-right white nationalist and fascist Andy Ngo?
fight back
Nope. They instigate.
Where is Dayton Ohio? And when do the Republicans practice softball?
To date, it seems the “far-right” shooters have been loner nutjobs who spend too much time on the internet.
I’m less concerned by them than a political movement of many people who seek to beat the shit out of people who disagree with them.
They are decentralized defenders of freedom. Didn’t you read the article?
“although they routinely brawl with far-right demonstrators at protests”
I mean it’s that really so bad ? That they go to events looking to beat the shit out of people? They’re fucking Nazis so they aren’t even human. You’re either against Nazis or for them.
Wasn’t that kid in Texas also on the “kkkorporations are kkkilling us” bandwagon?
That and he was an environazi. But we aren’t supposed to mention that because nuance disrupts the narrative.
My tin-foil hat tells me that this punk and the one in NZ set out to produce the exact result that has occurred: more division, more discord, and most importantly, more gun control.

Never heard of them. Looks like an ASC that went bankrupt or otherwise had to close. Many ASCs are physician-owned; they come and go.
And sometimes they get busted for fraud (which would explain bankruptcy). The article doesn’t actually describe any kickbacks, so I’m a little mystified by exactly what Pine Creek did wrong.
Pissed off a bureaucrat?
Between 2009 and 2014, Pine Creek paid for advertisements in local and regional publications, billboards, radio and television and spent money on upgrades including to its websites, brochures and business cards to encourage physicians to refer patients to the hospital for surgery, according to DOJ.
Marketing yourself, which is all this is, is not a kickback.
Paying for advertising and marketing for referring physicians can be, but that’s not what’s described. Its almost undoubtedly physician-owned, so maybe they crossed a line by marketing for their owner’s private practices – the lines can get blurry. Naturally, a highly-compensated expert attorney can keep you out of trouble, but physicians are usually cheap fucks when it comes to hiring lawyers, so . . . .
Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half

LOLWTF!?!?!
Oh, that’s awesome. And look who showed up first!
A Donnie Two-Scoops/Crazy McAfee partnership would be insanely entertaining.
I fell for it too on another Trump tweet – that’s not McAfee, it’s some scammer pretending to be McAfee.
I assumed that is what that is. While I can see McAfee doing a btc drop, the fact that you have to send in X btc to get 2X back screams scam.
And it says something about twitter that they allow that to continue while banning other stuff.
That scam appears in McAfee’s feed every day.
Twitter’s a platform, so there’s nothing they can do about it. Sad!
It says John McAfee, but the actual Twitter handle is @EastCrabCL98
Love all the “replies” – “I just got 83 btc – thanks!”
What is that, like a zillion dollars?? LOL
Ah, I didn’t look carefully enough.
I stand by my conclusion, though.
I wandered over to street view of greenland… it took me a while to find a street.
The biggest town they had reminded me of sad mid-canada municipalities without the trees.
No offense to Greenland, but the name was what we now refer to as “creative marketing” on Erik the Red’s part to convince people to move there from Iceland. Because the previous colonies died off and nobody wanted to go there. Because it’s a shithole.
The vikings settled greenland during the medieval warm period. It was lot more green then than now.
They actually had working farms there for a while. Ice Ages are a bitch
SCIENCE!
Four years after California became one of the first states to expedite the removal of guns from people seen as a public danger by family members or law enforcement, its “red flag” law appears to be helping to reduce the chance of mass shootings, according to a study released Monday by the UC Davis School of Medicine.
The initial findings by the school’s Violence Prevention Research Program were made public just hours after Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that he is interested in receiving a group of pending bills that would significantly expand the use of so-called “extreme risk protection” orders.
——
UC Davis researchers examined 21 cases of individuals who had firearms removed from them or purchases blocked because of court orders. The researchers found that none of the individuals was later involved in gun-related violence.
“We can’t prove that the orders are responsible for the outcome,” said Garen Wintemute, a professor of emergency medicine and the director of the Violence Prevention Research Program.
“But there is an obvious logic to this — that if somebody is posing an imminent threat whether it’s to others or to themselves, and firearms are a part of that threat, recovering the firearms can help reduce the threat,” Wintemute added.
Assume a can opener.
UC Davis researchers examined 21 cases of individuals who had firearms removed from them or purchases blocked because of court orders. The researchers found that none of the individuals was later involved in gun-related violence. This new learning amazes me.
What about the millions whose purchases were not blocked who also didn’t later get involved in gun violence?
Can’t have law abiding citizens owning guns, man.
You can’t mix populations like that. Those millions are good, upstanding people. This was a study of subhumans, defined by their gun ownership and, i assume, insatiable lust for death that all gun owners must have.
In other words, they can’t establish a relationship between the two variables but it sounds likely to them so, you know, a scientific consensus has been reached.
Considering how unlikely mass shootings are, using a sample of just 21 is pretty much worthless.
WOW.
So if I find 21 cases of American Muslims who were placed on the no-fly list and did not commit any terrorist attacks, they’ll concede that the no-fly list is a wonderful idea that saves lives every day?
Now you’re getting it.
I can find 21 gun owners who never committed a mass shooting, so I can only assume giving guns to everyone will keep tigers away.
I did a study finding that on there were 21 days where I drank less than 3 cups of coffee, and on which mass shootings did not occur in the US.
I have not yet determined whether the appropriate action is to outlaw the drinking of more than 3 cups of coffee per day, or of somehow restricting society to exist only on those 21 days.
these never get old
I love happy coincidences!
We can’t prove that the orders are responsible for the outcome. But . . .
Wonderful. Another self-licking ice cream cone.

“It is impossible to know whether violence would have occurred had [restraining orders] not been issued, and the authors make no claim of a causal relationship,” the study concluded. “Nonetheless, the cases suggest that this urgent, individualized intervention can play a role in efforts to prevent mass shootings, in health care settings and elsewhere. Further evaluation would be helpful.”

So Ministry of Love it is, then!

But how are you supposed to hand out patronage and graft doing it that way?
United States Department of Peace
Isn’t that, at least theoretically, what the State Department is supposed to be about?
00 percent for the idea of a Department of Peace.
But I think making this logo pink sends unhelpful gendered messages. It makes peace seem like a feminine idea, when it’s an interest irrespective of gender.
I think green would be a better color. Growth. Nature. Positivity.

Is this bullshit? This sounds like bullshit…around an inch every decade?
tectonic rebound from the loss of glacial mass is higher than that.
Yes, and its been doing so since the first continuous tidal gauge readings where taken, in about the mid 1800’s iirc.
So it is increasing but it’s likely due to some other process.
Yeah it predates the massive CO2 releases caused by human industrialization.
I don’t actually know that it’s increasing. I know that there are hocky stick graphs where direct measures are at a seemingly constant slope and then projections starting like next week ramp up on an unprecedented acceleration (aka making shit up).
I wouldn’t rule out that the same ret-conning the warmistas are doing to historical temperature records is also being done to historical sea level records.
Incredibly, NASA issues press releases touting “hottest whatever in history” by reference to ground stations (and thus ret-conned temperature records), and ignores ITS OWN SATELLITE records, which support no such thing.
Here’s Tony Heller talking about that.
Here’s one of the things that bothers me about the entire climate change discussion. I’m willing to entertain the possibility of anthropogenic climate change. But, beyond the claims of disaster, I can’t get a straight estimate on actual costs or consequences beyond “We’re DOOOOOOOMMMMMEDDDD!!!ONE!ELEVENTY!”. Without any kind of estimate on consequences, it’s impossible to make any kind of rational assessment whatsoever about what sacrifices are worthwhile and which are downright counterproductive. Yes, before anyone comments, I know that, to the advocates, this is a feature and not a bug. The spider article points this out. I’ve read for years that global warming wasn’t going to lead to an increase in the incidence of hurricanes. Yet, they pull this as an underlying assumption incredibly casually. If you’re openly dishonest when discussing things I need to make a decision about what you’re telling me, why should I trust you on anything?
They are out there. I can do some digging if you really want me to, but they are shit. They all assume a near 0 discount rate, when everything else we study is given a 2-5% discount rate. When those rates are applied, its a near zero present day cost.
Yeah, but that’s just the sort of thing I’m talking about. The near-zero discount rate is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s also the short-shrift given to offsetting consequences (e.g. enhanced food production), the evasiveness about timing and extent of warming, and the evasion of the fact of human mitigation activities. It’s all just a fancy way of saying “We’re DOOOOOOOMMMMMEDDDD!!!ONE!ELEVENTY!”.
It’s a political movement, not a scientific endeavor.
Scientists who buy into the process are destroying the reputation of their fields.

Straws. Start small.
DO YOUR PART.
So what you’re saying is, I need to stock up on plastic straws.
Agreed, and I know I’m preaching to the choir but it’s typical of the emotional social-signalling that’s behind a lot of this stuff. There’s a lot of sentimentality involved in the environmental movement as well as anti-capitalism. It’s why discussions with the true believers go absolutely nowhere; they won’t rationally assess these things in terms of marginal utility, so there’s no metric by which to decide whether something actually poses a problem much less to decide between various responses.
Sometimes, you can get people to look at marginal utility but only how it directly affects themselves and others like them (the seen) and not how it affects others unlike them (the unseen). This becomes an especially poignant problem when discussing the budget; there is no serious caucus for actually reducing spending, so any money taken from one program will predictably just be shunted to another. And why support that, when the current allocation benefits you and the new one won’t? Lather, rinse, repeat and the whole budget becomes untouchable.
I think the issue with the budget is even simpler than that. The vast majority of people who are fiscally irresponsible continue to be fiscally irresponsible. They spend beyond their income, borrow the difference, and when the credit card bills get too high do a cash out refi. Then when it gets unsustainable they lose the house to foreclosure, everything else to bankruptcy and start the cycle over.
Government is just doing the same thing. Getting it under control always means doing without something ,someone in the ‘family’ wants, and while humans are very good at sacrifice when there is some grand God or challenge involved, but very bad at it when it is for something as mundane as balancing their budget.
The cycle may start over but now they’ve taken to demanding others pay for their fiscal irresponsibility.
Ironically, that same cycle is heavily propped up by government today. People faced harsher consequences, and typically self-corrected sooner, in the past.
We’re already 20+ years into proving that, if anthropogenic global warming exists, we can deal with it ad hoc without some massive government scheme bordering on socialist revolution. Despite the wailing of the sellouts at Niskanen et al. it’s pretty obvious that people will just do as they’ve always done, adapting to a changing environment as it becomes necessary.

Glad that is finally settled.
“Porsche” Nazimobile
The Type 64, also known as the 60K10, was built to compete in a Berlin-to-Rome Axis race that never happened. As such, it was definitely built with clear propaganda goals: bring attention to the allegedly upcoming Strength-Through-Joy (KdF) Peoples’ Car (you know, Volkswagen), and to generally flaunt German National Socialist industrial prowess to the rest of the world.
Really, you could argue that nearly every German racing car of that era was designed to be propaganda for the Nazis; the legendary Auto Union Silver Arrows, those V12 and V16 mid/rear-engined racing cars built in the late 1930s are a perfect example of this.
——
You can’t just peel off the swastikas and pretend nothing happened—that’s not going to help anyone. At the same time, it’s crazy to ignore these cars because of their awful origin stories. The cars themselves are inert machines and have no more prejudices than they have growing fur in their wheelarches. It’s not their fault they came into being as a part of one of the worst chapters in human history, but that’s still part of these machines.
There’s plenty of blood to spatter for many, many cars here, too. It’s not even just German cars, though they tend to get the most focus, because, duh. But there’s blame to go around—should we have similar qualms when Model Ts go up for sale, because Henry Ford was a virulently anti-Semitic ghoul who sent Hitler birthday money and published years of hateful screeds in his newspaper?
By all means, tie yourself in knots over this shit. Show us the depth and breadth of your awareness. All those murderous Nazi bastards wore shoes, too. You know what you have to do.
No, it was boots, shiny black riding boots. With hobnails so they could keep smashing in your face. And tatoos – they, SS in particular, were fond of them. And beer.
Obviously we should send all of the existing Nazi cars to the crusher.
“Mercedes-Benz’ displays of a 1936 W150. It’s interesting to see how uncomfortable these cars make people; look at this odd video made when a Mercedes-Benz 770 made specifically for Hitler went up for auction”
Both of those cars are gorgeous. It’s idiotic to blame a car for the politics of its owner.
Why not? If we can blame a gun for the actions of its owner, seems like we can blame a car for the politics of its owner.
People are so fucking afraid of history. It’s disgusting.
And no more flying 109s and 190s at airshows because nazis.

Harvard Climate Loon: Keto Dieters Are Killing the Planet Because Bacon and Butter or Something
Walter is a disingenuous cunt. He’s so hurt that his low-fat, high carb diet advice turned out to be utter dogshit that he spends his days railing against any paleo/keto diet. You know, the ones that fucking work.
Fuck off Walter.
More people dying of diabetes, heart attacks, and obesity would lower the population, so he’s not totally wrong.
Good. Walther, I eat keto because I hate your children and your grandchildren. They’re the worst.
GF was telling me she was watching some nutritionist on TV dance around LCHF diets and refused to use the word “keto”.
Makes me suspect nutritionists are just butt hurt over it.
I happened to be at a trade show that was in the same convention center as a dietitians’ conference. I was astonished at the huge number of obese dietitians.
I assume it’s the same pathology that makes crazy people study psychology.
I see you met my aunt.
Absolutely, Tundra. Masking low self-esteem by finding faults in others.
The entire “professional” of “dietitians/nutritionists” or whatever the fuck they call themselves was funded by constituent members of the American Beverage Association (i.e. Coke and Pepsi). It is not accidental that these people advocate high-carb diets. There’s an Aussie doctor named Gary Fettke who gives a great talk on the origins of the government’s diet recommendations – it’s religious doctrine. (I’m not kidding. Look it up).
These people are morons. Wait until I do my next article on hydration and the “GatorAde Sports Science Institute.”
If you haven’t already read it, Death By Food Pyramid is quite good.
I’ve said it before: that food pyramid has probably killed more people than cigarettes.
I’d be interested. I generally stick with a Nuun bottle and a water bottle for my hydration on rides, with a hydration pack for the long rides (if nothing else, having a backpack full of ice water keeps you cooler). The calories come from carb loaded snacks, which can be measured better.
Depending on the use, gatorade is a perfectly comulent supplement. Liquid carbs are the fastest way to get glycogen back into muscles. Simple carb snaks are usually fine, but not quite as fast.
The speed you want the glycogen to come back is directly related to the intensity of the activity. Your bike riding is likely not at max intensity, so sold carbs should be ideal. For a competitive cyclist, liquid carbs would be preferable. My endurance activity is hiking/backpacking, and I eat a mix of simple carbs, complex carbs, and fat aka trail mix.
Plus sports drinks have more electrolytes than just NaCl.
…because that’s what plants CRAVE!
Yep, for the high intensity endurance things, gatorade and sports drinks can help. I’m not a fan of much of the flavors, and find that sticking to water and Nuun (which is another sports drink with electrolytes) with measured carb intakes works to keep me from bonking. I’ve tried the gels and really dislike them, hence chews and bars for on the bike, beer for recovery at a stop.
On one of the long supported rides I did, one of the stops had popsicles and ice cream sandwiches available (it was at about the 50 mile mark for a ride at the beginning of August). We were cheering the support staff at that stop.
I’ll miss the Hotter-N-Hell 100 again this Saturday

There is no pleasure too small for the scolds to try and eliminate it.
I wish I could just come out and say that any car touched by some miserable Nazi fucker is not worth saving, but the truth is I don’t believe that, not really. There are interesting cars with horrific pasts, and they’re worth keeping in historical and technological context.
I think context is absolutely key here when it comes to selling or collecting these cars. If a collector wanted to buy the Type 64 to be part of some Aryantastic Museum of Superiority, then I think it’s pretty clear: the car has become, again, an instrument of hate.
But I don’t think it has to be that way. The Type 64, and cars like it, should be able to be appreciated on their own merits, as just a car, in the context of other cars that came before and after it, but the circumstances of its creation cannot be washed away or forgotten.
These cars, I think, can still be collected and appreciated, but with a good dose more responsibility expected of them than just buying something like, the first Volvo P1800 or that V4 Mustang prototype or something.
To handle these sorts of cars right, sellers have to believe in the idea that they represent more than just a car, and be willing to exercise judgment about who they sell them to, that is, if they care. If Richard Spencer set up a GoFundMe to buy the Type 64 so he can paint swastikas all over it and sit in it as he stares at himself in a hand mirror and tearfully jerks off, then I suppose a seller could have taken his idiot-money and handed him the keys.
But, hopefully, people with cars like these do appreciate what their significance is, good and bad, and are willing to find contexts where these cars can be preserved, without turning them (back) into instruments of hate.
Good grief.
Jesus Christ what a load of shit. Too much to even begin to break down.

Bernie Sanders Arrives In Hong Kong To Lecture Protesters On How Good They Have It Under Communism
Beto O’Rourke is planning on joining Sanders to inform Chinese citizens how lucky they are that they don’t live in a racist country like America.
Is the crowd going to tell him to “Shut up round eye”?
Fake news. Bernie is a Soviet Commie. He would never support the Maoists.
I doubt Sanders could tell you the difference between Maoism and Marxism-Leninism anymore without having to look it up. He probably also would have difficulty explaining what, exactly, the current government of the “People’s Republic” of China actually is.
It’s fascist. ‘Private” corporations largely owned by, and under the thumb of, members of the all powerful bureaucracy, with no aspect of the society not controlled by the bureaucracy.
Yep. It also has the racist angle; the government could accurately be called Han supremacist. And if Xi Jinping is any indication, they are also trending toward dictatorship.
China always reverts to the Imperial model.
Something, something, Red Tsar…
[Current leader] is always the first one to tell you that democracy is “not compatible”.
Yes, indeed. The only thing keeping it from being obvious to everybody is the lack of a dictator. Which as kbolino points out, may not be the case for much longer.
There’s also the problem that the fascism of China today is Strasser’s and not Hitler’s. But people don’t realize there is fascism outside of Hitler.
A cluster-fuck?
That too. Of course, it thrives on the appearance of being very orderly.
He wouldn’t need to exposit the doctrinal nuances between Maoism and Stalinism. He’s been a member of Team Soviet from way back, and Team Soviet and Team ChiCom have never gotten along.

Well, doctrinal differences aren’t why the Soviets and Chicoms fell out, either.

Ahh the GOP of New York is at it again. The Elephants might be better off if they stopped including members from New York and New Jersey.
Republicans for fucking you in the ass.

It is a strange world we live in.
The Democrats want to create more laws but pretend to dislike the cops who are going to enforce them.
The Republicans love the cops but pretend to dislike the laws they are enforcing.
Together, they help forge us to a future with more laws and more power for cops.

Just like the toast landing jelly side down we always get more laws and more enforcement.
There’s your mistake, you’re putting jelly on toast.

I can already tell that I’m going to have to spend far too much time explaining that fluorene is not the same thing as fluorine.
Why, what happened?
Transvestite frogs instead of gay frogs.
Some
jackassprocess engineer built a TEOS/OMCTS stack, topped it all off with spin-on hardmask, and wanted to know everything that would outgass off of it at 675K.So, take reactive monomers and silicon(e) precursors, mix, heat and then ask me to ID everything that comes off. THEN during the report they are going to want to know how HF contamination happened. And I’ll say “no, no, not fluorine with an I, fluorene with an E.” And they will stare blankly at me. And then the process will repeat with every latecomer who enters the meeting.
Noooo…I’m pretty sure it’s what I said…
You should make a t-shirt with the explanation, and just point to it.
This would make a good t shirt

Plus the library/ID algorithm on the GC-MS is horseshit, so I have to double-check everything. “Bisthiopyran with a 95% match? WTF is the sulfur coming from? Oh, it’s really pyrene. That makes more sense. Fuck you Agilent. “
that’s no better than just comparing spikes to known graphs in the old days
I would be willing to be that that this library is a collection of customer-generated ones, considering all the different nomenclature schemas that pop up. Plus some really nit-picky IUPAC names that are just wrong.
And apparently one of the major datasets was from a drug lab — we are constantly having amphetamine and cocaine showing up as possible IDs (I wish they were correct matches, that would make things vastly more entertaining around there.)
Well, you expect the vendor to come up with their own datasets when these other premade sets are available?

An Oregon court is ordering that a 13 year-old girl with cancer must have surgery and other medical treatment for the disease despite objections from the girl’s mother. . . . Dixon has said that after Kylee went through six months of chemotherapy, she could no longer watch her daughter suffer.
They’ve gone heavy handed after several rounds with followers of a faith healing church.
https://www.oregonlive.com/oregon-city/2017/03/followers_of_christ_investigat.html
“she could no longer watch her daughter suffer.”
What kind of parent puts her own wishes ahead of her daughter’s in a situation like that? I don’t like watching my brother suffer cancer, but I’m trying to be strong for him, not pushing him to give up. Other family members though feel the exact opposite and they seem to pounce on him on his bad days to stop their own suffering. I realize everybody has a breaking point, but the kid is the patient, not the mother.
It’s a terrible position to be in. My wife and I have talked about this as some friend’s daughter died from cancer a few years ago. When she was going through treatment we discussed when treatment and trying to live through a possible cure is worse than just living while you can. They pressed on for a long time (and had some successes) but within a few weeks of her dying they put her on hospice and were praying that God would take her.
My wife and I both agreed that for ourselves we would not put ourselves through misery to possibly save our short life. As we believe we will be going to heaven, why should cling to every straw and reed possible to stay here?
What kind of
parentbureaucrat puts her own wishes ahead ofher daughter’sa parent’s in a situation like that?Sucks they have an ad-blocker blocker and I can’t read the story, but this is a child, whose own wishes are, well, a child’s. 13 is on the cusp of being able to exercise the kind of agency necessary to make a life or death decision, and this kid may be there.
So, what does the kid want? Does the article say? If the kid is begging for more chemo and the parents are refusing, that’s one thing (although the parents may still be taking a defensible position if more chemo is futile).
You’re making a lot of assumptions, finger. You may be right that the parents are sick of the kid’s whining and want her dead already. But there is definitely a zone where the docs will be happy to keep making money off you with futile treatments that inflict and prolong suffering. Maybe the kid’s in the zone; maybe the parents are making a good faith call that its her time. In my experience, people very rarely make the call to send to hospice too early, especially with kids. It may be that the state really needs to step in here, but its not the way I’d bet.

Rev. Jacek Kowal, pastor of Collierville’s Catholic Church of the Incarnation, wouldn’t let a black woman, LaShundra Allen, clean his living quarters because his German Shepherd is reportedly aggressive against people with darker skin.
Well it is a German Shepard, you know who sheparded Germans?
Otto Von Bismark?
his German Shepherd is reportedly aggressive against people with darker skin
I’ve known several dogs like that. I’d really like to know why. Picking up subliminal cues from their owner? Flagging darker skinned people as other and outside the pack?
Flagging darker skinned people as other and outside the pack?
It’s basically this. Dogs don’t like “different”. so they are suspicious of anyone markedly different than what they are used to. You can sometimes get the same behaviors with uniforms.
So then, Bella likes Gingers?
I think it’s a touch of the latter plus subliminal cues from black people. A few of our dogs were less than wild about black people when I was growing up just because not many black people came around. Our two current fart monsters don’t care because they’re used to seeing black people in a family and friends context. Dogs are simple (as opposed to dumb) and while they rely on scent they use sight, too, and most dogs will cue on seeing something different in their environment.
Interestingly, my cousin-in-law’s ex-boyfriend told me about the stereotype about black people being particularly nervous around dogs being a thing in families with southern roots, kind of a hold over from the Bull Connor days. Ironically, his family had dogs that would bark at white people. I think dogs are just particularly keyed in to spot the not.
Hell, growing up I had a German Shepherd who was my age, raised as a puppy with me, and she’d lose her mind if I was wearing a hat. She’d bark and lunge at me like she was going to kill me, but she’d go for the hat, yank it off my head, and then be alright. Maybe it’s just that German Shepherds all need therapy and medication.
Ze hat iz not part of your uniform!
Imagine that, you breed a species to guard your tribe’s camp from outsiders and it acts hostile to people unlike its owner.
Bella does the happy dance! You win a prize!
I have a large lot. We have a portion of it fenced off to keep the dogs where we can find them.
If I am standing on the wrong side of the fence, then will bark until I leave.
FWIW my cats are terrified of anyone who isn’t me.

Dick’s Sporting Goods considered stopping all gun sales in early 2018. A shooting at the high school in Parkland, Florida, had killed 17 people. And the company was shocked into action.
“We did have a conversation about that,” CEO Ed Stack told CNN Business earlier this year. “At the time we felt it was a part of our DNA and we should stay in it. So many people in the country are law-abiding citizens who use firearms to hunt, to use from a recreation standpoint. We didn’t think it was right to exit the business completely.”
That could be changing. Dick’s, one of the country’s biggest gun retailers, has been quietly testing the water on whether to pull out entirely from what it calls the “hunt” business, including firearms. An announcement with the results of the test is expected Thursday, when it is set to report quarterly results.
———
Two weeks after the Parkland shooting on February 14, 2018, Dick’s decided to drop the sale of assault-style rifles that are frequently used in mass shootings, as well as high-capacity magazines that can allow a person to fire more bullets without taking time to reload. It also raised the age for the sale of any firearm to 21 from 18.
Rather than sell off its inventory of assault rifles to another retailer, Dick’s had the weapons destroyed. And it hired lobbyists to work on gun safety and gun control issues. The moves won praise from gun control opponents and anger from gun enthusiasts. The backlash has probably hurt the sale of rifles Dick’s continued to sell. As a test, Dick’s last fall stopped selling all hunting gear, including guns, in 10 stores. It replaced the guns with other goods, such as apparel of a local sports team and other popular items.
The experiment was a success. “Those stores outperformed the balance of the chain pretty meaningfully,” Stack said.
Destroying inventory, instead of generating revenue? Sounds like a winning strategy. They should offer Colin Kapernick a spot on the board of directors. They need to get in on that Business Roundtable “Shareholders? Fuck those guys” manifesto.
In a functional legal system for corporate governance, the CEO would be writing a check to the company for the retail value of all the inventory he ordered destroyed.
The size of the check for the damage to the company’s reputation and goodwill would be harder to calculate. But should still be payable.
Yeah, no way those stores were cherry-picked.
Would love to see the store performance of the Cabela/Bass/gander stores closest to those 10 cherry-picked stores.
So, granted, I’m in an unusual area because it’s irredeemably blue but a lot of people around here hunt, but it has honestly never occurred to me to go to a place like Dick’s or Modell’s for guns or ammo or anything. Everyone I’ve ever known around here who hunts either goes to a local place, Bass Pro, or maybe Wal-Mart (or K-Mart back in the day). Some place where the staff wear zebra stripes? Wouldn’t even register.
There’s more involved in hunting gear than just the guns. Dick’s removed more than just the guns.
Right, but how many people are gonna go to a store that sells all the hunting gear you’d want, buy a shotgun and some shells, and then make a separate trip somewhere that won’t sell guns just so they can save three bucks on a jug of fox pee?
Shoot, hit the button too soon. Meant to add:
And how many people would have a hunting-specific store in the area and then choose to go to a separate, generic store for a tree stand or duck decoys or whatever even if they don’t need the stuff that goes boom? Unless that’s the only store in town, in which case it’s probably not an area where many people hunt.
Even before Dicks was haphazard mishmash. Couldn’t decide if it wanted to be an outdoor store, or sporting goods, or clothing.
They went right after Sports Authority, which was mostly golf stuff, kids soccer gear, and workout fashions. Their baseball section was youth baseball/softball and adult softball and that was it. I don’t know what the fuck high school kids do for equipment. I was hoping when Dick’s opened that they would have more of a baseball selection, but it was actually even lamer. It got to the point where a couple guys in our league started making bats because there were literally no stores carrying wood baseball bats apart from manufacturer overstock.
Future CEO Boss Hogg agrees.
God damn, those are some stolen bases. Dick’s never sold “assault-style” rifles, CNN can’t give a working definition of “assault-style” rifle that doesn’t accidentally include firearms nobody would dream of considering in a self-defense context, and “high-capacity” is an extraordinarily relative term that in most states with “hi-cap” limits tends to include the standard magazines generally sold with common firearms. I mean, shit, are there any bases left to steal???
*steam pours out of ears*
anyone else see the annoying Dick’s ads with the CEO last year and say “Should call it Cunt’s, not Dick’s” like I did.
allow a person to fire more bullets without taking time to reload
Reloading is a matter of a few seconds. Besides, didn’t the Parkland kid use ten round mags?
a few seconds? 2 seconds is slow.
Look, I only have one magazine, and I have to put the bullets into it before it goes back in the gun.
They need to get in on that Business Roundtable “Shareholders? Fuck those guys” manifesto.
Does anyone else feel like they’re living in Atlas Shrugged?
It’s patently obvious what the Roundtable thinks they’re doing. By sidelining shareholders as just another group of “stakeholders”, these guys think they’ll get to do away with any pretense of having any check on management control of the corporation. They’re aiming to make the agent the principal.
But, they haven’t thought one minute beyond the advantage of the present. What do they say when a President Warren or a President Harris turns around and insists they have to cede control of the company or the Board to a (government selected, of course) panel of stakeholders? Their own statement cedes the issue to them. The company is there to balance the needs of all of the relevant stakeholders. Who the hell is management to try to decide what stakeholders’ claims get precedence?
“Does anyone else feel like they’re living in Atlas Shrugged?”
I’m way too good to admit to reading Rand.
*slowly inhales own farts*
Her heroes were cardboard cutouts. But, her villains were dead on.
Sadly, the villains were also cardboard cutouts. They just fit better than the heroes.
This. Boards have been neutered lapdogs for decades who don’t give a shit about the investors. They’re there to validate the CEO’s decisions and party on the shareholders dime.
The reality is that most of the CEOs don’t give a shit as they rarely get fired and the rotating pool of executives among large corporations is a club. You could bury one company one day and go on to lead another within weeks simply because you’re well-known.
And if they really screw up, they go into politics. See Carly Fiorina.
So, what you’re saying is the shareholders need to fire the boards, replace them from outside the club and go to town on the C-suites.
Whoa, hold on! You can’t just put any rando on a board. They have to be connected Top. Men.
They should do exactly that. Unfortunately, the various state governments and the Feds have pretty much neutered the rights of shareholders. They’ve legalized a maneuver in which management can dilute the stock while forbidding certain shareholders from buying any of the additional issue (the poison pill), as just one example.
Meanwhile, the pay is enough to get fuck you money many times over. The mainreason for sticking around, or going back for more, is ego and drive.
(That’s not a bad thing, but trying to point out they don’t need to land another job or do anything besides camp out on a golf course for the rest of their life after sending a company down in flames)
What do the CEOs care? They could go full state control and retain their perks. There’s no real downside to cozying up to government for them.
Oh, I agree. I was trying to speak to the general don’t give a shit attitude of execs. For the most part, the only reason some would oppose a government master is the perceived lack of freedom to do what they want and more oversight/control. There are very few if any principled CEOs these days. Rip Wendell Willkie.
the only reason some would oppose a government master is the perceived lack of freedom to do what they want and more oversight/control
In big corporations and heavily regulated industries (where the CEO has already been broken to the yoke), I would not argue. In healthcare, a lot of the CEOs are just dying for single payer of some kind. They don’t see that when they have a single payer, they are owned by that payer, and its a matter of time before full socialization occurs and they go from 7 figure pay packages to GS-something pay, if they even still have a job.
its a matter of time before full socialization occurs and they go from 7 figure pay packages to GS-something pay, if they even still have a job.
Exactly this. They think they’ll be feasting on the sacrifice. They just don’t get that they’ll be the sacrifice.
Everything you’re saying is true. But, this is pretty much doing away with even the pretense of a responsibility to shareholders. And I think they’re going to pay for it, as I suggested. Why not let the government appoint a Board, what moral or intellectual foundation would you have to protest after declaring the company nothing more than a balance of competing interests. After shafting the rights of your shareholders, what claim on your authority do you have left.
Why do they want authority? It’s better to be a well-paid figurehead.
Maybe so. But, you can bet your bottom dollar that the government officials looking to dictate the new Boards will have plenty of friends just as interested in serving as a well-paid figurehead.

I’m holding out for the big reveal that this whole deal is just one huge piece of performance art. “Ha, ha, gotcha! You goof, of COURSE there are two pronouns! It’s English! C’mon!”
how rich is it that pronoun is a gendered word (el pronombre) in spanish (and I assume, many other languages)
You know the French word for someone who wears clothes of the opposite sex? Un(e) travesti(e), and the word’s gender changes based on the sex of the person it’s referencing.
Here’s an illustration of the Hegelian Dialectic in action:
Thesis: The Democratic Socialists are the revolutionary vanguard who will overturn Capitalist structures and usher in a glorious new dawn where the workers of the world are free of oppression.
Antithesis: The revolutionary vanguard is easily upset and will collapse in a quivering heap upon hearing “trigger words” such as “he” or “him”, clapping, or raised voices.
Synthesis: The Worker’s Paradise will happen in an underground, soundproof bunker that must never be referred to as “Tom’s mom’s basement” on pain of banishment, and will last until the soy patties run out.
I hadn’t heard that whole discussion.
