The Navigation Act of 1600, part of the broader Navigation Acts, mandated that any ship bringing cargo into the “New World” had to first go through British checkpoints for inspection. Additionally, any cargo ship leaving the American colonies with goods was also required to be checked before continuing on to its destination. The purpose of these inspections, of course, was to ensure that the Crown got its cut of the loot.
If, for example, someone attempted to skirt the rules by shipping cargo to another country without first stopping through Britain, they were deemed “smugglers” and “pirates” trying to avoid taxation and left themselves open to having their cargo—and even the horse and buggy used to load the goods onto the docks—confiscated. As subjects of the crown, the British authorities had expected the colonists to help enforce the Navigation Acts from afar. However, the colonists were not so eager to enforce the abusive policies of a distant government.
Once those accused made their case in colonial courts, it became very difficult to find a jury willing to convict. But by charging the property, and not the “pirates” with a crime, the Brits had found a loophole.
Recognizing that enforcing these policies through port inspections was going to be more difficult than initially expected, Britain began incentivizing captains and crews of the Royal Navy, and other agents of the state, to do their dirty work for them. In exchange for their services, those willing to enforce the rules were allowed to keep the seized ships as prizes, which only made the practice more appealing and, thus, more widespread. Sound familiar?
Yes. Yes it does.

Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the degrading of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind and to things that should not be done.
Without getting into the argument about whether or not Islam is globally/on average worse on the issue of homosexuality (it pretty obviously is in 2019), I think it’s weird to quote the Quran as evidence that that must necessarily be so when Mo is just riffing on Paul there.

The LGBT abbreviation is totally misleading when it concerns Islam (not that it’s not in general). Transgender individuals are permitted to have gender reassignment surgeries in Iran and then treated as members of their chosen gender. On the other hand, gays are not treated with any compassion.
jesse.in.mb
Not only that but I believe effeminate gay men are shepherded down that route. I’d be interested to know what cultural norms make conformity along those lines more acceptable than homosexual relationships. Now I’m kind of curious if Persia has a historical third gender/eunuch designation like the Hijra in India that got suppressed but not obliterated in the cultural revolution and became a convenient outlet for sexual non-conformity

Tensions at a heated House Judiciary Committee hearing on online hate speech boiled over on Tuesday, when conservative commentator Candace Owens accused Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., of distorting her comments on Hitler so flagrantly for the sake of a smear that he must “believe black people are stupid.”
“In congressional hearings, the minority party gets to select its own witnesses,” Lieu began. “Of all the people the Republicans could’ve selected, they picked Candace Owens. I don’t know Miss Owens; I’m not going to characterize her; I’m going to let her own words talk.”
————
Owens’ remarks echoed those of President Trump, who has repeatedly defended nationalism against progressive attacks that the concept is intrinsically racist.
Lieu then asked committee witness Eileen Hershenov: “When people try to legitimize Adolf Hitler, does that feed into white nationalist ideology?”
But Owens soon made clear she felt Lieu had intentionally misrepresented her views to drive a false narrative not just against Owens, but also Trump and Republicans in general.
“I think it’s pretty apparent that Mr. Lieu believes that black people are stupid and will not pursue the full clip in its entirety,” Owens said.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-NY., interrupted, telling Owens, “It is not proper to refer disparagingly to a member of the committee. The witness will not do that again.”
After clarifying that she had not, in fact, called Lieu stupid,
“I didn’t say you were stupid. I thought everybody already knew.”

TAIWAN (KRON) – What was originally thought to be an eye infection turned out to be something far worse.
Instead of treating an infection, doctors at the University Hospital in Taiwan were shocked to find four bees embedded in the eye of a 29-year-old Taiwanese woman named He.
The bees were reportedly feeding on her tear ducts under her swollen eyelids, according to CTS News.
He had come to the hospital after experiencing severe pain in her eye.
The hospital’s head of ophthalmology, Dr Hung Chi-ting said at a press conference that such bees nest near graves and in fallen trees, so chances of coming across them while hiking in the mountains are high, according to Apple Daily Taiwan.
He confirmed she was at a family member’s grave pulling out weeds when she felt as if she got dirt into her eye and flushed it out with water.
After that, He says she started experiencing a stinging pain and teary eyes.
“I saw something that looked like insect legs, so I pulled them out under a microscope slowly, and one at a time without damaging their bodies,” Dr. Hung said.
Good news — He did not rub her eyes too much, which officials say could have worsened the state of her inflamed cornea. Worst case scenario would have been blindness, according to Apple Daily Taiwan.
The sweat bees were reportedly removed alive.
He was discharged and is expected to make a full recovery.

In a separate but related action, ACSL will also file a petition for contempt of court over what they allege are violations of a 1995 settlement agreement. ACSL’s petition will request that the court fine and sanction the City of Pittsburgh, award attorney fees and costs, and hold the Mayor and Council-members severally and jointly liable for violating terms of a longstanding court order that required them to “abide by and adhere to Pennsylvania law.” The parties in that prior action stipulated that the City’s Ordinance 30 of 1994 was preempted by Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution and 18 Pa.C.S. § 6120, as it regulated the possession and transfer of what the City classified as ‘assault weapons,’ ammunition and firearm accessories. The City’s new gun control laws, ACSL says, violate that Settlement Agreement.

I think there are a few reasons. one is convention; it is what the Japanese guys use/used. They probably used it because it was cheap and plentiful. And when properly conditioned it works well for that type of thing. It has a good balance of friction, especially when wrapped around itself, yet it is pleasant enough against the skin, it has a decent tensile strength so it can handle suspensions. Synthetics are frowned on because while they are generally much higher load ratings, they don’t hold friction against themselves as well. Hemp is also stronger, but it gets soft and smooth really fast.
Not Adahn
Manilla was the preferred rope when I was in the scouts because it didn’t shred your hands to splice it, it was strong, and when it got rained on, the lashings got tighter. I imagine that latter characteristic would be a big no-no for your purposes.
i also imagine that synthetics could be made now that would be the ultimate, but there’s probably no real demand for them.

“Poverty is not some unintended consequence of capitalism,” Riley said. “It’s not just something that exists and we’ve got to figure our way out. Poverty is a necessity of capitalism. You can not have capitalism without poverty.”
Foreign Affairs Symposium executive director Kiana Boroumand said Riley was chosen for this year’s symposium because of his multidisciplinary approach to activism.
“We wanted to hear from somebody from the artist/activist world who is doing this work in multiple mediums,” said Boroumand, a junior majoring in sociology. “Boots is incredible. He’s a filmmaker and a writer and a rapper, and he’s been organizing since he was a teenager. He epitomizes our theme this year, which is ‘Disrupt.’”
Each of the speakers in this year’s symposium lineup were chosen based on the ways they disrupted existing power structures. Speakers from earlier this year include Erlendy Cuero Bravo, an Afro-Colombian human rights activist; poet and essayist Solmaz Sharif, who creates work criticizing U.S. militarization; and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
During his talk, Riley emphasized the need for actions beyond gathering for demonstrations.
“We end up selling a false idea of how power works,” Riley said of marches and demonstrations that don’t disrupt the day-to-day workings of capitalism. “We sell the idea that capitalism is somehow democratic, that if enough people raise their voice and say they don’t like something, they will change.”

It might have been the day when Donald Trump’s Washington finally slipped the limits of credulity.
The administration’s big guns — Attorney General William Barr, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin — got a hostile reception on Capitol Hill from Democrats eager to pull back a presidency they see as out of control.
Tuesday zipped by in a blur of grave constitutional tussles scented with the whiff of corruption. Surreal exchanges unfolded in Congress that left witnesses spluttering. There were superficial feuds over alternative facts.
The bizarre sideshow encompassed climate denial, a spat about Adolf Hitler, one senator’s meditation on Hollywood’s molesting actors and a schoolroom-style squabble between a top Democrat and Mnuchin.
The weird juxtaposition of the weighty and the frivolous seemed an apt metaphor for how Trump’s presidency has torn age-old codes of political custom and behavior to shreds.
In the odd new normal of the Trump era, several top Cabinet officials found themselves answering questions about topics that would have seemed unthinkable in more conventional times.
Barr faced a grilling over his conclusions about the most serious investigation into presidential conduct in years — and a report by special counsel Robert Mueller that Americans have yet to read.
Mnuchin was beating back demands for the release of Trump’s tax returns, after the President bucked tradition and refused to share them with Americans.
Both men left serious questions unanswered that offered ample evidence of the Trump administration’s allergy to scrutiny, which is knotting up the political system.
What a horror show.

One more for the pile: apparently some teenagers convinced Mike Gravel to run for president again, with the sole goal of getting into the debates to stir things up. Apparently the current rules for getting in the debate require only 1% interest in polls or 65,000 individual donors spread across the country, so they’re trying to get a bunch of people to give the minimum donation so he qualifies for the debate. I went to TOS for the 1st time in more than a year to read that Rico article about the comic and the very first comment my eyes fell upon was some handle I’ve never seen accusing Crusty Juggler of being a brand new Libtard troll. Sigh…
Awww. I miss Crusty
#metoo
I wish he would have joined us.
+1
He is funny.
Was. Now he’s just bitter.
How bitter, compared to Sparky?
I still get the e-mail updates from TOS (mostly in case something really big happens and I want to know what might be happening from that point of view). But I find that I very rarely click through to whatever they are blathering about. More often than not I check in here first to see hat the buzz is about.
I can’t go there anymore, it’s like they don’t “get” me now.
Starting the party late so as to weed out the non-committed. I see how this works.
I assumed it was Swiss unplugging the server until people promised to stay OT, accordingly:

I laughed out loud
Does anyone have experience with the pistol sized Pelican cases? I’m trying to decide between the Protector 1150, the Storm iM2050, or the Vault V100 and was hoping perhaps one of y’all had some 1st hand knowledge of those models.
The only Pelican case I have has the capacity to fill a table at a gun show.
Yep, that’s the situation I’m in. I love their products but the only ones I’ve used have been the very large models. I’m sure any of the smaller ones would be great but I’m ordering from Amazon and don’t have an opportunity to handle them.
I have one for a laptop that is nice, but nothing as small as a pistol case.
I was worried the site got added to the filter list in our firewall, thank ZARDOZ it wasn’t!
I momentarily had the same fear.
*shudders*
SP actually does have the red button. If we encounter another Preet situation, one press and everything is gone and we can honestly respond, “Sorry, we just don’t have the information you’re looking for.”
I don’t think you’re supposed to tell people this
Luckily, the site is registered in someone else’s name. I think maybe yours.

It involves a boating accident.

Manually move end effector to approximately 0.065″ from the scan starting position… ok, now they’re just fucking with me, right? Anybody have a 0.065″ feeler gauge?
All y’all broke the site so I’d have to drop in. You could have simply invited me over for cocktails, instead of inconveniencing your fellow Glibs.
It was Brooksie. We warned him.
Brooks didn’t snub us. So she likes him far more than she likes you.

Wow. Every time I see a big white dog I lament for what could have been.
It was Charmed that done broke the server.
Sorry to be needy children, SP. You’re the best.

it’s only original once. The nice thing with this is you clean it up and fix all the systems and you can drive it without worrying about a stone chip. OTH, it looks like a beater.
I doubt you’d get your money out of it.
Fix it up and drive it.
This one isn’t original anyway. Swapped tyranny and not numbers matching motor. Still worth coin, but not nearly as much as all original, so enjoy it!

Oh Florida man.

Hmm. “Carrying an unlicensed firearm” sounds like a bullshit charge. None of my guns have licenses and I purchased several of them legally in FL.
Probably an illegal carry charge, not a charge for the gun itself being unlicensed.
A parable for the welfare state grand enough for a Shakespearean outing.
Democrats in legislature are passing their current wet dream of gun control, until they come back for more. State gun rights org is trying to get the R’s to walk out to deny cloture on the vote. Pointless & depressing for a state that was mostly sane on gun “rights” (hardly rights if the whim of a legislature can take them away) until recently.
which state?

HITLERHITLERHITLER. The answer is always HITLER.
“When people try to legitimize Adolf Hitler, does that feed into white nationalist ideology?”
His parents weren’t married?
What a farcical shitshow. These people are fucking insane.
There is a YouTube video of her testimony. When she was told that she replied, “ yet I was just called xxxxx ( I can’t remember the derogatory word ). Whit a look on her face that showed disgust.
Priceless. I recommend watching it.
‘How dare you not sit there and be disparaged by the committee members!’
“I didn’t say you were stupid. I thought everybody already knew.”
I thought she actually said that. I was gonna write her in for president just because of that.
Yahoo! News already told me what to think of this already.
I didn’t realize I was subscribed to their little newsletter, so I immediately unsubscribed.
To be sure, her original comments about Hitler were pretty stupid, but I don’t think she was trying to legitimize him.
Woman’s infection turns out to be bees living in her eye, feeding on her tears

Schadenfreude bees?
4 bees implanted in eye using tears for sex lube.
That is unadulterated, high-test nightmare fuel right there.
Are He’s pronouns he?

Any of y’all paying attention to the dumpster fire that is the Lakers? I remember show-time, back when Magic/Bird was the hottest thing in basketball sports. I mean, it is a case study in dysfunctional organizational behavior. Bring in beloved but unqualified emeritus employee to run things, hire the biggest hot shot in the business but give him free reign to act like a jackass, toss over your frontline employees and undermine your frontline managers. Good lord.
Magic Gone
I am. But am not sad about it. Magic done fucked up imo. Now trade Lebron and start the fuck over.
That is what should happen, but I ain’t gonna bet that is what /will/ happen. But none of the top free agents are going to want to go stick their dicks in that hornet nest.
should have gotten jerry west in the first place
And even if they trade for AD, so what? Lose the young core, you have LeBron, AD, and … that’s about it? That’s not a top 4 team in the West, and you’re probably behind the Bucks/Raptors/Sixers too.
wonder what trade value Ingram has now…
Magic was truly a horrid GM.
I don’t trust whoever they get to run the team next is going to be any better, since they’re just going to let LeBron run things into the ground to placate him.
Exactly. What exec who is worth a damn is going to take that job knowing Bron-bron has veto authority, will ignore the coach with impunity, and etc. Anyone capable of turning the ship around has to be able to see what a cancer James is and want no part of it.
The guy has amazing physical gifts and talent. But he has no discipline and he’s rarely had anyone tell him ‘no’. It makes him a poor leader and weak, and that’s why he’ll never be the GOAT. Which is why I find this whole thing amusing.
No. My attention is more drawn to a couple dumpster-fires in progress in NY.
Devils and Rangers got picks 1 and 2. Doesn’t sound too bad to me.
Yeah, saw that. I don’t pay attention to the Devils but yeah that’s good news for my Rangers. So, OK – maybe fire averted. Still some burning embers, though.
The other dumpster-fire I had in mind is the much bigger one at NYCFC. I’d be surprised if they don’t just fold in the next year or two.
NYCFC won’t fold no matter what. Sheikh Mansour has plenty of oil and enough slave labor to keep all his teams afloat forever.
Good point, I wasn’t accounting for Emirates dough.
I want to know if he’s willing to undergo a shakedown in order to finally get a fucking stadium built.
Also, I have to admit that – as much as I utterly loathe them – being Man City’s farm team does have its perks.
Rangers will either get Hughes or Kakko. Big time talent boost there. They actually will have a rather nice collection of young forwards with one of those two, Chytil, Kravtsov, Buchnevich, Andersson. Plus, they could end up with as many as three more first round picks depending on what happens in the playoffs.
Kakko. Devils would be insane to Pass on Hughes.
Don’t make me have to root for fucking Tampa Bay.
I didn’t get a chance to comment on your post yesterday. A question:
Why jute? When I was into ropecraft, jute was considered the dregs of he fiber world, below sisal even.
Interesting. I didn’t know that.
Royals. Got enough dumpster fire right now.
Yost should have left in 2015. No way they were going to repeat & he could’ve left a winner.
Royals, 2045!
As a Warriors fan I have really enjoyed what Magic has done with the Lakers.

Smash the system! Why hasn’t anybody thought of that before??
It’ll work this time.
How are people this ignorant of history and the rest of the world? You need “capitalism” for poverty? WHAT THE ACTUAL IGNORANT TOOL WOULD SAY THIS?
I need time-travel to take all these morons back in time to Egypt in 1000 BC and see how they enjoy their “pre-capitalism” vacation where there was “no poverty” (modern times in another country doesn’t work, because their poverty is always capitalism/whitey’s fault, so you gotta go back.)
“I dont think that word means what you think it means”
Capitalism. Poverty. When he uses these words he means productivity and inequality. He says one thing, you hear another.

Johns Hopkins charges probably $60 grand a year so they can invite some third-rate nobody rapper to give infantile lectures. Sounds about right.
You’re very close on that tuition number.
At least when I was there, they had interesting people, like Yeltsin and Farrakhan.
Instead, he told attendees they should be working with organizers to create a mass, radical labor and social justice movement centered on the strategy of withholding labor.

Trump’s America
Chicken Little was an optimist.
“climate denial”
bahahaahhahahaha
Also- Never forget. Never let go. ROOOOOOOSHUNZ:
The kind of chaos now unfolding in Washington — with American set against American and skepticism rife about the legitimacy of the President — is the kind of result of which Putin can only have dreamed at the start of the Russian election interference effort.
It may not be a coincidence that he chose this moment to offer his most expansive remarks yet on the Mueller probe, which appear calculated to sow even more discord.
Choosing talking points similar to Trump’s own, Putin said in St. Petersburg that the scandal was “total nonsense aimed only at a domestic audience.”
This is totally new. Nobody ever questioned the legitimacy of Bush or Obama. Nobody at all.
Putin stating the obvious is sowing discord? Oooohh-kaayyyy.
Collusion and obstruction were duds. I sense a return to the ever popular “Republicans are making the country ungovernable” theme.
Down the rabbit hole I go. I just downloaded a 40gb torrent of old TechTV content (Call For Help, Big Thinkers, Fresh Gear, The Screen Savers, Extended Play, etc.) and am about to get my Leo Laporte fix while I learn about the cutting edge tech of 1997 – 2002.

Mike Gravel is the guy who is known for reading the Pentagon Papers into the Congressional Record and also for a campaign commercial from when he was seriously(?) running for president in 2008 in which he threw a rock into a pond and contemplated the ripples.
if you want a vision of the future under Cory Booker, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – forever. and every once in a while it stops for an inspirational lecture on how we should never stop dreaming
— Mike Gravel (@MikeGravel) April 6, 2019
I believe he’s got it right there.
How much further left does it need to go? Full on communism?
They aren’t full-on commies now? Their policy recommendations look identical to the USSR’s policies to me. Free everything, guaranteed (mandatory) jobs for everyone, complete redistribution of wealth, control of the media, a command economy.
Need? How much further left is possible?
Well, Beto said they would “allow” the

Is Gravel still live? He must be about 150 years old.
He’s old as dirt.

I expect somebody in the Democratic Party to propose a “solution” to the affordable housing crisis which involves a quasi-government nonprofit assigning families to the homes of people with “extra room”.
*Like that part in Doctor Zhivago where the guy goes home to discover dozens of strangers living in the old family homestead.

Oh, and I think they have done it already in one of the Scandinavian Utopias.
Get rid of a bunch of regulations and then they can build their own shanty towns.
Everyone needs a place to call home.
Sure, those tiny homes would be perfect and fairly inexpensive but square footage restrictions make that almost impossible.
Man, I was worried I’d have to find another libertarian community for a bit. I even visited the libertarian subreddit. Ugh, what a squishy group. They’re more focused on “we’re totally not Trump supporters” than anything else.
