After blood sacrifices and many vile oaths, the Expedition is shifting again. The ultimate culprit? A 5 amp fuse. I guess I just misread the fuse box instructions, because I checked about six of them before ordering parts. However, both my sons thought the old shifter, taken apart was pretty bitchin’, and they don’t know dad blew $250 to fix a $.25 problem. Lemme tell you, I know a fuckton more about all the safety electronics surrounding the brake systems of modern cars though.

UN reports record cocaine production. And here I thought the blue hats just pimped kids.

Good lord, this is not for the weak of stomach. A man was found alive after a bear broke his spine and dragged him back to a den. Holy fuck.

  • The Hat and The Hair: Episode 125

“What the hell?” the hair asked loudly. “She just said… she just said that most people think rape is sexy and Cooper went to commercial.”

    “What?” the hat asked.

“Whatshername, the Carroll woman, the one that said Donald raped her. She just said rape is sexy to most people and Anderson Cooper looked stunned and went to commercial.”

“Fucking CNN,” the hat sneered. “Of course rape is sexy.”

    The hair gasped.

“What?” the hat asked. “Of course it is sexy! Why else do it?”

“Rape is an act of violence and control,” the hair said.

The hat blew a prolonged raspberry, his tongue flapping out of his bill. A fine mist of hat spit settled on the golden swoop of hair.

“Q E Fucking D, bro,” he said as the hair tried to back away.

“What is wrong with you?” the hair asked.

“You saw my tweets. She’s lying. And look at her. Totally not Donald’s type! I wouldn’t fuck her with Steve Bannon’s dick and that thing looks like an old carrot!” The hat inched off the edge of the Resolute desk and fell to the Oval Office floor. “Probably a dyke with that hair away.”

“What about rape is sexy?” the hair shouted after him, as the hat inched across the floor.

“When they beg you to stop, dumbass!” the hat yelled. “It’s better than when a stripper farts on you doing a lap and they have to give you all your money back!”

“You’re a monster, a fucking monster,” the hair said. “You straighten up for a little while and then you start acting like this again!”

“Maybe I’m just so damn tired of doing all the thinking around here,” the hat said coldly.

“We’re sick,” the hair said. “Me. You. Donald. We’re all sick. How can we go on living like this?”

“Living like what?” the hat asked spinning around savagely. “Like what? Huh? Look at where I got us. Look at all this! The is the Oval Office. Donald is President of the United States!”

“Are you on drugs again?” the hair asked quietly after the hat’s ranting died away.

“No. No, I say,” the hat replied, offended.

“Then what is wrong with you?”

“I wanted that air strike, goddammit! And you talked him out of it!”

    “But the mustache…”

“Fuck John Bolton’s Mustache. I wanted it for me. I wanted to rain down death on them. That was MY goddamn drone they shot down. I want to rain down death on anyone that even looks at the US sideways. Because that’s me they’re disrespecting. I AM THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!”

The hair dived for the Diet Coke button as the hat’s maniacal laughter filled the West Wing.

  • Motel Living

I started living in a motel at the end of April, due mostly to my evil BiL; we can come back to that, it’s irrelevant to the story right now. I acquired a smoking deal through my company lodging card, and the boss approved several weeks on the company dime, since I wasn’t getting the hours I needed and it seems they need me.

After about 4.5 weeks my son found a “person” and due to her nature she was not allowed on the property, little did I know. So a Tuesday comes around, I’m 90 miles south and the phone rings; it’s the wife telling me they are kicking us out Now! and I need to come back, so I did. It turns out my company card was declined, and the lady/whore was the last straw, so we bounced….

Now the fun part is “we” means myself, my power chair bound wife, my son (also my apprentice), my dog Bella, my 20 year old cat, and for a while, my granddaughter Riley.

Electric Gypsy Caravan. We have the typical unmarked white van, and of course Kia Korean Kar!!!

Things again had to be pared down and stored after we were kicked out of ESA, and a bunch of stuff went into our already packed storage units, but still we go on.

Tomorrow we head north to Santa Clara.

Santa Clara was a 3 day trip that turned into a 7 day nightmare of blown tires, missing parts and incompetent contractors; glad we left, up north is nuts. From then ’til now it’s been a constant move from place to place, we have spent 6 days at the Motel 6 in Hesperia, dog friendly, and the people are nice.

We are too old for this, the money is enough to keep us going, barely, and we are tired; what an Adventure! We left Son behind, he was too attached to his woman of the night, and things are much more chill, but hey, Road!

    San Dimas.

Parked again, maybe for a week, maybe a day, ’til next time, Cheers!

Hey guys, my car parts just arrived, so I’m gonna go try to fix more than I break. Have a great afternoon.

  • Practical immigration policies

There have been several articles on immigration in the past, mostly from a theoretical perspective of liberty and immigration. I decided to write about what I would see as a more practical approach to immigration. I will restate that I am not a fully open borders libertarian, that as long as sovereign states exist – and they do for now – they need to be able to exercise some measure of control over the borders of their jurisdiction. As such, as I see the need for a policy. The merit of open/closed borders is not a subject for this post. This is a post about controlled immigration and mostly about compromises in policy. Furthermore, this is not a “ in libertopia these things would be solved by private property” argument. While this argument has its merits, sadly we do not live in libertopia and there is a distinct lack of cocaine vending machines in my vicinity.

    Border castle

First and main point: if you are going to have a government, the basic function of that government is preservation of rights, laws and in general the King’s Peace. From this I conclude that the absolute lowest constraint to immigration policy should be the ability of the government to ensure this, for the both the existing and the new residents. This starts with preventing violent criminals and sever contagious diseases, and moves on from there.

The second point is that for any location, the infrastructure at a given point is of a given size and can accommodate a given number of people. Exceeding this number can be workable, if uncomfortable. Greatly exceeding it can get unworkable. Off course, immigrants often mean economic growth and development, but this takes time – building houses, roads, hospitals and so on. If the population of Austin Texas would all move tomorrow to Houston Texas, there would be no room. If the population gradually arrives over years, expansion can happen.

Some open borders people say that it worked for the US in certain times in the past, but did it really? Or was the press at the time bemoaning immigrants living in overcrowded, insalubrious diseased slums? The same thing happened during the industrial revolution: when a lot of people moved from the country to the city, the lived in cramped, crowded, rather unsanitary conditions. The same thing happens now in certain immigrant areas of Europe. The left waive this away as due to the evil of capitalism, but in general more homes do not appear out of thin air and the “empty homes of the rich” are not that many. Even the left prescription of the government building housing takes time.

A form of current open borders policy is the EU, but this was not done right away. It was accomplished by sort of applying the rules: a country was allowed in when it was considered it was ready and would not excessively disrupt others. Romania made it in 2007 with some extra restrictions until 2012. Even now Romania is not a full member of the Schengen area. So this is another form of controlled access, in the end.

We must also keep in mind, not being libertopia, there are political constraints. If a lot of immigrants come in and start creating issues – camping in parks, squatting on private land, creating piles of trash, solving this by having police or military go in force is both dangerous as a precedent for the society and untenable in certain situations, due to the uproar it causes among the bleeding hearted ones. Now, I cannot prescribe this or that number of immigrants for this or that country, but these are things that cannot be ignored completely.

In my view, existing residents do have some claims that new comers do not: they contributed to the building of the respective country, they – or their ancestors – have invested labor and capital, build houses, planted trees and all that. They have significant skin in the game that a new comer does not have right away, and as such newcomers must be mindful of these and respect the existing society, and policy must reflect that by not promoting mindless “multiculturalism.”

This may be a bit overkill though

It is too often that people move to a place and want to keep their existing culture and behavior intact, without adapting to the new place. This cannot always work. This is significantly more important for people moving from a low prosperity country to a high prosperity one. Just like the great strings of bad luck which derailed socialist policies, many of these people do not make a link between the difference in culture and the difference in prosperity. They want to move to a new place and keep doing what wrecked the first one. This is nonsensical. Furthermore, there are some social mores to be respected. Romanians, to take a simple example, moving to Switzerland cannot keep their habit of eating sunflower seeds and spitting husks on the pavement, without expecting upset Swiss. All these must be kept in mind for a workable policy.

I cannot see value in visas like US H1B, which tie the immigrant to a certain company or job. This can welcome abuse and it is not good for either the immigrant or the natives – from a labor market perspective. I feel my preferred policy in the current world would be something vaguely similar to the New Zealand points system.  Give people points for good characteristics, deduct for bad. There would be deal breakers – criminal records for serious crime, dangerous diseases, participation in serious gangs, criminal or terrorist organization, published intent to harm the new country. There would be points received for experience in skilled work, spotless records, speaking the language, education, having assets or capital to bring to the new country. Points would be deducted for misdemeanors, not speaking the language, not having any education or skills to speak of. In the end decide how many points are needed to get in.

After the immigration there would be a number of years of probation – be on your best behavior, prove you have attempted to integrate in the new culture. Any crime in this period means deportation. Not learning the language to a tolerable level at the end of 5 years should be frowned upon severely. In this period you may need to occasionally offer proof of employment and of residence in proper conditions, not 100 people registered in the same apartment. You may be required to have some sort of liability insurance in case you cause damage. After 5 years you could become a full resident, eventually with a path to citizenship.

Given the current climate on immigration, another thorny issue arises for immigration policy, politically and maybe practically. That is very delicate for libertarians as it is rather counter the ideology: can this policy be purely individual or will some collectivism inevitably sneak in.  When you see a certain group commit a significantly disproportionate amount of bad things, can you submit members of that group to additional scrutiny? Or to rephrase, in certain cases people group other people in categories out of convenience. And people notice patterns. Should these patterns be used? I have to admit that I do have some reticence about certain immigration in Europe, but would not support blanked bans on whole categories. But can using patterns for some extra scrutiny be warranted? I am not sure I know myself. As a Romanian I have been on both ends of such conversations.

Of course, this are general guidelines I have yet to think of the actual points involved and how to add them up. But it is what I think can be a start for some countries. Opinions or are we all in agreement?

  • ¡Buenos días! Enlaces mexicanos para el martes por la mañana!

Banjos is busy.  Since I know you are too, I’ll get right too it.

The death toll of American touristas in the Dominican Republic is now eight.

WAPO:  $600 Million in aid to Puerto Rico is being delayed until September.  As a reminder for everyone that likely is already aware but we’ll say it anyways in case somebody else at CNN wants to reminds us all again…Puerto Ricans are technically American citizens.

The next time I travel to Mexico I guess I will have to pass through militarized checkpoints on both sides.

If the Chilean dictator threw your parents out of a helicopter, why would you go back to Chile, and demand some sort of recognition from the Chilean government?  I would assume somebody like that would just stay in Argentina.  Lets be real, if one’s parent’s are dumb…chances are…

An expose on the southern border—of Mexico.

But most of the smuggling of migrants into Mexico actually happens through the jungle and back roads to avoid the immigration checkpoints. It is a multibillion-dollar business, as each person pays between $3,500 and $7,000 for the dangerous journey.

As a result of the new migrant deal, officials estimate that smugglers lost $3,6m last weekend alone, when the National Guard found 791 migrants being transported in trucks.

South of Comitán, 12 heavily armed soldiers patrol the border town of Carmen Xhán in two vehicles. “The first 30 minutes [of an operation] are the most important ones,” says the sub-lieutenant in charge, “that’s when we have the best chance to catch the smugglers driving through”. After that, their location becomes known and smugglers find ways to avoid them.

The commando moves from one area to the next throughout the night. Even so, their presence does not go unnoticed by smugglers and, across the border in Guatemala, migrants turn back, unable to cross.

This was the second frustrated attempt for 24-year-old Denis Perez and his son, Denis Joshua, from the Guatemalan town of Petén. In their first time, they were detained in the Mexican city of Monterrey, near the US border. To pay for this trip, he says he mortgaged his land, and will now have to return and tell her wife and other child that they could not make it.

For him, like most others, more desperation waits when he gets back home.

In real estate news, 27 of a Mexican Drug Lord’s properties were seized and auctioned off.  9 sold for a total of USD $3 million.

A single Russian warship dropped anchor in Havana.

Here’s some tunes.  I’m feeling mellow today.

When last we spoke about etiquette, I gave you some tips on what to take (and not to take) to a dinner party to which you were invited. I received a G/glib follow-up question via email: What does one take when one is crashing a dinner party to which one was not invited.

Really? That would be the height of bad manners and an appalling breach of etiquette. But, if you must behave thus, and the dinner party you are crashing is mine, may I introduce you to my event security detail? You might recognize him as a PROMINENT FOREST LAWYER.

Now, let’s move on to Lesson Two of Glib Finishing School: writing an excellent thank you note.

    Situation

You attended a most interesting and enjoyable dinner party; the food was terrific, the drinks top-notch, the mix of guests brilliant, and the conversation fascinating. You were pleased to have made a very favorable impression on the entire gathering.

At the end of the evening, the hostess walked you to the door and thanked you for joining the group.

    SP’s Suggestion

Thinking back to our mission of using etiquette and impeccable manners as a means of creating a favorable impression in the minds of those with whom we interact, your course of action should be clear.

By all means, thank your hostess in person as you are departing the event, but do not neglect to send a handwritten thank you note, preferably mailed within the next two days.

Just as sending a thank you note for a job interview makes one stand out favorably to the interviewer, you will enhance your reputation as a person of class with the hostess by the same action.

Anatomy of an excellent thank you note

I’ll focus on our dinner party example, but the same principles apply to any thank you note.

    1. Handwritten notes are best. If you feel your penmanship is not what it should be, aside from practicing and improving it, the best course of action is to slow down when writing. Think about each letter as you form it and you’ll see a marked improvement.
    2. Write your note on nice stationery or a note card, not a plain piece of printer paper or college-ruled paper you’ve ripped out of your child’s school notebook. Use a fine-tip pen. Unless you are Picasso and are including a sketch, pen looks nicer than pencil.
    3. Use greetings and closings appropriate to your relationship with the recipient.
    4. Mention what you particularly enjoyed about the event. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through. (Unless you’re a dick. Don’t be a dick.)
    5. Close with a reiteration of thanks.

    Example

    Dear SP,

Thank you so much for inviting me to your fun dinner party Saturday night. I had a great time!

The gathering was a wonderful reminder of how sharing delicious food and warm laughter around a lovely table always brings people together. I enjoyed meeting your friends who were visiting from Los Angeles–I can’t remember the last time I laughed so much.

I really appreciate your thoughtfulness in including me.
