The Night Shift for November 16, 2019

Baby, it continues to be cold outside!  OK, for some of you more fortunate glibs, it continues to be pleasant—maybe even tropical.  I, myself, have taken a couple of holiday days off, in order to attempt some follow-up/closure on my previous spleen issue.  Might as well get some other things done, while everyone else is working.  Eh, I’ll probably just watch some TV and have a few White Claws.  In that same spirit, here’s the weekender ephemera:

This starts off so promising, but things have to go and get violent.  And, a bit sexy.

Is it OK to hate everyone in this story?  Ugh…I can’t even any more!

Well, it IS Hollywood, after all.  (Insert movie industry jokes at your leisure.)  There seems to be some hand-wringing regarding this guy not still being locked up.  I’m not really sure what they are expecting.  Me?  I figure she should have been allowed to be armed.  Might very well take care of any ‘revolving door’ angst. Please note that I sympathize with the lady, and get the concern about violent mental illness.

Why do they call her ‘Joy’?  Is it to be ironical?  With her, maybe we should call it ‘Skanksgiving’.  And, by the way, Mr. Berkowitz (yeah, I went there)—there’s nothing “sort of” about you.

Feces II:  Feces Harder.  Denver sees LA and says, “I’ll see your homeless problem, and raise you a citation on a productive member of society!”  What is it with these bums?  Don’t they know they can just go to Starbucks for this?  Yes, I did consider an Electric Boogaloo reference, Mr. Falcon.

Do you just hate you some Jews?  Well, have I got the perfect city for you!  Seriously, kids—WTF?  Familiarity breeds contempt?  Did they take yer jerbs?  Look, Al Sharpton isn’t gonna bang you, so stop being a tryhard.  OK, maybe just a handy…

Whoosh!  It’s an oldie, but a …oldie.  I have always had a good laugh over this story.  In fact, you should look into what happened to the guy.

Sorry, my loyal (and not-so-loyal) glib friends, but I am running out of time for completing the post. Life intrudes on what should be my TG holiday time off. Feel free in jump in with your own closing music. I will, hopefully, be able to continue next week, but family care is pressing. Do me proud, and glib it up tonight.

Well, it IS Hollywood, after all. (Insert movie industry jokes at your leisure.)

    Feces II: Feces Harder.

Remember the “shithole” Trump kerfuffle? He was talking about wrong countries.

    1. Sir Digby

Well, just leaving one off the list.

      1. Pan Zagloba

I had..something about calls coming from inside the country? But fuck it, I have to watch the clock for database reboots, so I’m not all here. Or all there.

        1. Sir Digby

          Hey–you’re in good company.

Or, bad. Haven’t figured it out, yet.

          1. dbleagle

  2. Rhywun

Where’s the family of all these mentally ill persons dumping diarrhea (or pushing people in front of subway trains, or tossing bricks at passers-by, etc.etc.etc.)?

    1. Sir Digby

      Who wants to claim that??

    2. Pan Zagloba

Odds are good they have no idea where these people are, or if they even know they’re alive. And as they get older, there’s less and less chance of there being a close family member who would even think of them.

And if they did find them…what do you do when Brother Larry says no and fucks off somewhere again?

      1. Rhywun

I saw an article recently about some town in Italy where these types roam more or less freely like here but are kept in check by family and shopkeepers and such. No idea if it’s relevant here but it was food for thought.

        1. Sir Digby

          but it was food

          What you did there….

        2. BakedPenguin

I mentioned this previously, but I had a friend who became increasingly separated from reality. I’d try to visit and keep him centered, but when I stopped working near where he lived, it got harder. The last I heard from his brother, he was homeless in Colorado. Not much you can do about that,

Note: he was nowhere near the “poop on the street” level of crazy the last time I saw him. He did think InfoWars was actual news, though.

        3. Pan Zagloba

Yes, works a bit better if your culture is more family-oriented, and less migratory. But, California has a pull, and a lot of the people move there, families lose touch, and then illness gets worse with time.

It’s a fucked up problem with no non-coercive solution.

          1. Rhywun

            Yup.

An anecdote: in my NYC neighborhood – been here ~10 years – is a population of about 5 or 6 permanent homeless. I’ve seen them around the entire time I’ve lived here. I frequently see one of them in a bodega getting a free cup of coffee or a pizza place getting a slice, etc. etc. I don’t exactly approve of this “solution” but I have to admit it’s better than any alternative I can think of.

          2. Rhywun

To clarify: Obviously, this sort of thing won’t work with more serious cases.

      2. Chafed

What PZ said. Especially for the more serious cases, there is just so much family can do.

Will do, i I ever get em

  5. Rhywun

New York City has had problems with antisemitic violence dating back for more than a century, but in recent years it truly seems to have found new legs.

The Crown Heights riots would like a word.

No, what has “new legs” is bullshit panicking and fear-mongering.

  6. Gender Traitor

Official theme song of the impeachment hearings so far: “Take It On the Run” (“Heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who…”) or this?

Take any opportunity to emphasize just how much Bruce Springsteen and the entire E Street band loathes Trump.

Is that supposed to be pro- or anti- Trump?

Thanksgiving advice for all family: eat, drink, and be merry; for tomorrow we die.

In other words, don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s all small stuff in the grand scheme of things.

Pass the mashed potatoes and Kerrygold butter and stop judging me, bitch.

So, since my reboot seems to have gone OK, but we’re waiting on performance tests, and I’m bored:

Midway or Ford vs Ferrari, anyone seen either? I want to catch a movie soon, and these seem the top picks, but I’m leery of Hollywood Historee.

    1. Sir Digby

Have read that Midway is better than expected. Have no idea by how much.

    2. Gustave Lytton

Someone posted a mini review of Midway near the end of the thread today. Maybe the beer one?

      1. hayeksplosives

        From the Beer One:

dbleagle on November 16, 2019 at 4:08 pm
I saw “Midway” last night. It was disappointing. No, let me amend that. It was what I feared.

If you know little to nothing about the history of the early PTO, actual effects of weapons or how naval and air forces fight you may enjoy the computer graphics.

If you know about these things then the movie will probably keep your teeth grinding.

In several spots a small scene of 1 minute in duration would explain how significant a later scene is, but in the headlong dash of this film they skip that at multiple times.

The number of errors for the rest of the movie are too numerous to mention without putting me at danger of a stroke.

I will give a spot of credit where it due. I was skeptical about Woody Harrelson playing ADM Nimitz. But Woody did very well. So a kudo there.

Plus the credit to the Japanese and American sailors at the end of the movie grates on my nerves. The IJN sailors died serving an evil, expansionist government. They do not deserve credit with the Americans sailors who defeated them at Midway. This statement really pushes my hair the wrong way. The same way as when Merkel at Normandy thanks the Allies for “liberating Germany”. No, fuck you. The Western Allies conquered a nation supporting an evil socialist government. Later, we offered a hand up and for the course of the Cold War Germany was an allied nation. (Formally they still are but in actuality……….there are questions to be debated.)

I am hoping for better in the Ford versus Ferrari movie

      2. dbleagle

I saw Midway and posted the mini review near the end of the beer thread.

If you have any knowledge whatsoever of WWII or actual military operations do not waste your time. (But Woody Harrelson actually played ADM Nimitz surprisingly well.)

        1. Pan Zagloba

So, bad movie, but better than Pearl Harbor?

          1. straffinrun

“You’re my best friend and you fucked my girl, but the goddamn Japs”.

          2. dbleagle

I never watched “Pearl Harbor” but “Midway” is not as bad as the Russia movie about Stalingrad. But it is close.

    3. hayeksplosives

Dbleagle had a scathing review of Zmidway.

I trust the Eagle. He knows what he’s about, knows Pacific war, and I’ve met him in meat space so he’s real.

‘Two court employees told investigators that they saw Thompson attach the suction device to his penis, while five jurors reported hearing whooshing sounds, which they thought were coming from either a bicycle pump, blood pressure cuff, or an air cushion on the judge’s chair.

After a search of Thompson’s former courtroom and chambers yielded items that tested positive for seminal fluid, investigators secured a search warrant to obtain a DNA sample from the ex-jurist.’

Hey, you can’t fault a guy for having a strictly timed training regiment, and honestly, who among us hasn’t left trace amounts of semen around the workplace?

    ***
The report finds that of the nearly 889,000 applicants for the DACA program, 110,000 had arrest records. Of the more than 765,000 approved for DACA, 79,398 had arrest records. Of that number, 67,861 were arrested before their most recent DACA approval, while 15,903 were arrested after their most recent approval.

The offenses incurred by DACA requestors who were arrested before their most recent approval include battery (3,421), assault (3,308), burglary, breaking and entering (1,471), rape (62), murder (15) and theft or larceny (7,926). The largest population arrested were suspected of driving-related offenses excluding DUIs (23,305) and immigration-related offenses (12,968.)

      ‘Night!

  24. Thank you all for your well wishes. They were felt and very appreciated.

We are home from the hospital. I will spare you the drama that got us there, but my son will be in intensive therapy for the next year. They did not have enough to admit him. I will say this: I do not now believe it was a wild hare that led me to sell my guns today.

@Trigger Hippie re my daughter and our inkling that she might have fibromyalgia, and your suggestion about shrooms. We have actually discussed the possibility of CBD oil. We haven’t had time to research much yet. Mr. Mojeaux’s fibro friend swears by it. Even if it’s just migraines with a constellation of symptoms surrounding them, we think the CBD oil will help. She is 16, much taller than me, and weighs about as much as I do, but carries it much, much better than I do.

    @Tulip

I got migraines (and twice yearly ear infections) until I got my wisdom teeth out. So, go see an oral surgeon. It made a huge difference in terms of quality of life.

That is very interesting. I’ll research that, thank you!

@Jarflax So I didn’t take 4 Tylenol PM tonight. I just took Benadryl. Let’s see if that knocks me out.

Lastly, beef tongue IS delicious. Nice and chewy like chicken gizzards.

  25. Gender Traitor

This song has been on my mind for the last couple of days, and this seems like just as good a time as any to share it.

    Nighty night.

        ::thunderous applause::

        Damn those Cowboys…now, they’re taking people’s eyes!

        America’s Felony team.

  26. Sir Digby

Any lite-nighters have an update on Festus?

    1. Sir Digby

      Lite, late–whatevs

    2. Tripacer

Or Evan? I do hope the jungle hospital has treated him ok.

  27. Derpetologist

I feel like the last guy in a bar, a dubious distinction I have earned a few times.

A skeleton walks into a bar and says gimme a beer and a mop.

  28. Derpetologist

    OK, I’m calling it.

    Bugger off song:

      Bugger well, friend.

        1. Sir Digby

Wow, Q…this is something of a stamping of my posts, isn’t it?

Or, have you done this before, and I don’t remember?

  29. robc

When the cost of a product skyrockets, while its benefit decreases, the obvious answer is to stop buying it.

Do High Schools not teach basic econ any more?

    1. Sir Digby

What’s the product being bitched over?

      1. robc

College in 1 of the links.

        1. Sir Digby

Ah–the Boomer shit. Yeah, shit doesn’t stay the same, especially when you bring Authority into the picture to attempt to control it.

But, let’s prog harder, because, obviously, you just weren’t doing it enough.
