Things to Come – Week of May 6th

“You see what I did to this animal that displeased me..don’t you let me down, or I will be wearing your hide, next.”

A bit late today…I got caught up in a dispute down on the Ricola wrapping line. Man, those things hurt when they get fired out of a crossbow. Anyways, order has been restored, and I am free to give you a sneak peek at the week to come.

Monday – Beer it Forward returns. Tulip pickles things. Hmmm… a very consumable oriented day it seems. (Animal will likely return the next Monday, continuing the Bolt Guns series).

Tuesday – Suthen talks trees. MLW talks Woke Charmed.

Wednesday – SugarFree continues to molest our minds. Not Adhan has a thought on STEVE SMITH.

Thursday – ron73440 gives us dark humor. Sensei continues his Japanese lessons via Anime titles.

Friday – wdalasio ponders culture. Cryptid of the Week visits.

Weekend – The usual suspects will be rounded up – OMWC, mexican sharpshooter, Not Adahn, and others.

Daily links will continue from me, Banjos and OMWC.

We have had a good response to our plea for materials, as you can see. However, there is always room for your contributions! As in, next week and after that…  Thank you for your continued support of our humble site.

The comments are all yours.

    I am intrigued…

Having tried making pickles of various sorts several times, I can confidently assert something that I first heard on the Andy Griffith Show 40 some-odd years ago: “Just buy the store-bought kind.”

      1. Rhywun

LOL I saw that episode in a hotel room in downtown Cleveland last year. God bless MeTV.

      2. Akira

I do love making pickled serranos, though.

Put a bunch of sliced serranos in a Mason jar or glass crock. Meanwhile, simmer a mixture of half white vinegar and half water on the stove, then add a few tablespoons of salt (I never got very precise with it) and stir until completely dissolved. Pour this mixture over the peppers so they are covered, then chill in the fridge.

They’ll be ready to eat the next day, and they’re good indefinitely (I always consumed them within a month or so). They’re excellent on sandwiches with capicola, provolone, and roasted red bell peppers.

I had a simple lime pickle recipe that I really liked. However, although it didn’t require much prep time, it did have to sit around a long time. As such, I never got into the habit of doing it often enough so that I’d have some homemade lime pickle when I wanted it and … eventually I stopped “cooking” entirely (for other reasons).

Worse still, at one point I found that my wife’s red chile was interfering with my sleep, so I foolishly leapt to the conclusion that all spicy food would interfere with my sleep, so I cut way back. Turns out, that was a huge mistake and I’m back to eating a fair amount of green chile and other spices with no downside.

      3. AlmightyJB

Yeah, I’ve tried a couple times and end up with mushy product.

        1. CPRM

Alum or aluminum or something…I’ve been awake to long.

I am PROUD of my ability to get past the double-posting safeguards of wordpress.

    4. Hyperion

Truly, the best pickled thing, when done right, is corn. You can pickle anything on the planet you want to, but you are not going to top that.

      1. Tulip

Hmm. That, I’ve never tried. Please post your recipe tomorrow.

      2. Spudalicious

Ditto. I’ve pickled and fermented a number of vegetables but that’s a new one for me.

      3. Fourscore

The only way I like beets is pickled and they are great the way Mrs Fourscore makes them. The store bought ones or at a salad bar ain’t so good

Things to come this week, Libertarian observer edition:

There will be something of both epic stupidity and mind-numbing mendacity involving Trump in some way.

Mark it down. Nostradamus, eat your heart out. Specific, timely, not delivered in cryptic quatrain and most of all, accurate.

    1. Not Adahn

Just a minute there bub. Let’s see your Prognosticator’s Union card.

      1. blackjack

Imma predict he ain’t got one.

    2. Can we call you Nostradumbass?

      1. cyto

Call me what you like, but when something stupid pops up and Trump’s name is involved, you’ll be singing my praises to the Augur’s guild.

      2. That’s Cosa Nostradumbass to you, sir.

  3. Tres Cool

I take the good time and effort to post on the previous thread, seeing that the top the hour had past and nothing new. Here we are. Fine.

    2. OneOut

We laugh but…. I suspect that most here have heard the saying with respect to a bitchy woman….she just needs a good fucking.

My ex would go into her bitchy mode if we hadn’t had sex in two or three days.

Around that time I read an article that proposed that women were addicted to semen. It was injected into them and wound up in their bloodstream and induced some sort of chemical reaction in the brain.

I have no idea if this is all true but I do no for an empirical fact that that particular woman needed an injection at least three times a week to keep her from climbing the walls.

        Go on…

    4. Spudalicious

I have no idea why Libertarian politicians aren’t taken seriously.

      2. Sir Digby’s The Golden Age of Ballooning

        Go on….

  5. dbleagle

To come this week. Obama will continue to be disappointed in the American people. The HoR will continue to act in a manner that will crash their credibility everywhere outside the NYC/DC/LA/SF bubbles. And most importantly, “The Hat and Hair” will continue to cause readers to not be able to look away.

  6. Old Man With Candy

It’s 94 degrees and 8% humidity out. Drinking is underway- after all, it’s for my health. Gotta stay hydrated.

I read that as “titties” and now I’m disappointed.

Animal titties? That’s just sick, man.

No kidding. Sagging man boobies are just not attractive.

    3. DEG

I guess I should have read the comments before commenting.

      1. Sean

Whoa! Let’s not make any rash decisions.

      2. J. Frank Parnell

Pretty sure that sort of thing will get you banned.

  8. Rhywun

One thing to come is a drink with rye – finally found some. “Bulleit 95”. Better be good, for what I paid for it.

    1. Count Potato

The other thing is keep trying Canadians until you find one that tastes rye enough.

      1. But Enough About Me

        Alberta Premium, and you’re done.

        You’re welcome.

    2. MikeS

      Very good choice.

      1. Rhywun

It was the only choice, at least in my cursory examination of the shelves. I was cold-sopping wet and didn’t feel like lingering any longer.

        1. MikeS

It’s good enough to drink straight, and not so expensive (at least most places) that you’d feel bad* using it in a cocktail.

*Yes, I know, many people use top shelf liquor in cocktails. I can see it occasionally, but if I’m paying $60 for a bottle of High West, I’m going to sip and savor that whiskey neat. I’ll make my Manhattans from the Bulleit, or Rittenhouse, or Sazerac.

          1. Rhywun

This Bulleit is about my limit for spending on booze. I prefer cocktails anyway.

          2. Gustave Lytton

I like Bulleit and Rittenhouse. Sazerac not so much.

          3. Spudalicious

Yeah, Sazerac just doesn’t seem to do it for me. I’ve even tried the 18yo and wasn’t impressed.

          4. Gustave Lytton

I just figured it was my crappy palate.

          5. MikeS

I’m glad to see you guys say so. I was kinda “meh” on it and like Gustave, thought it was me.

          6. Spudalicious

I think Rittenhouse is a better rye than Sazerac, and it’s a few dollars cheaper.

          7. MikeS

Rittenhouse is a surprisingly good whiskey for the price.

          8. Spudalicious

It comes out of the same rick house as Pikesville Rye.

          9. Old Man With Candy

If you’ve been to Pikesville, you know why you don’t want to drink that shit.

          10. We have a friend who works for aa distributor which includes Sazerac Rye among their brands. She was recently coming to our house for a dinner party and asked if she could bring anything, and not knowing her connection, I suggested Rye, and she brought a fifth of the Sazerac. It’s on my shelf to this day with one drink gone from it. Meanwhile, the Bulliet 95 next to it is going fast.

No better Manhattan than one made with Bulliet 95.

          11. Rhywun

No better Manhattan than one made with Bulliet 95.

I’m on #2. Hot damn this is tasty.

          12. Rhywun

            Sippin’ a test-shot. Tasty.

          13. MikeS

            #metoo

            Prost!

          14. Rhywun

            G’suffa!

          15. Rhywun

And now, a proper Manhattan. Holy shit, this beats my previous attempts with the wrong ingredients.

          16. Spudalicious

It’s a decent whiskey. I was pleasantly surprised at their Barrel Proof bourbon.

Too bad you don’t still live in Texas where there are no such regulations for you to be afraid of.

      1. OneOut

      2. Don Escaped Texas

I could deliver those myself next week, I suppose.

No big loss: the guy just ain’t that keen. Nice idea he borrowed that one time, and money is cool, but he’s been fulltime fubar since the IPO. Indeed, his authoritarian streak and stumbling, inconsistent, dodgy explanations and recouchings remind me of nothing so much as Herself’s 2016 campaign.

“Thank you for your continued support of our humble site.”

No, thank you and all those that make this presentation available to us. It brings us hope and cheer early in the morning, that all is more or less right in the world. Our dreary lives would be empty without one another and all the Glib world. Information, humor, music, BS, something for each of us. My plate is overfull, with intellectual calories. Thanks to all!

I have no doubt they would be happy to rebate your annual membership fee.

        1. OneOut

          They have already done that.

I’m considering suing for opportunity cost.

Are you a lawyer or know one who is so broke they would take this case on a contingency basis ?

          1. Spudalicious

  14. Animal will return next week with part two of the bolt guns series, at least if that submission makes it past the editors in time. Working on part 3 even as we sp… er, write.

I can vaguely remember watching -and liking- this show as a kid.

I hadn’t thought about it in decades, but instantly remembered the theme song and intro.

            Excellent.

I was watching the shit out of that show until we unhooked the DirectTV

          3. Fatty Bolger

            Now we’re talking.

I watched the entire series when it was on Netflix some years ago, really enjoyed it. I didn’t know that Tom Selleck was featured on the show in a couple of episodes. Great role, basically the anti-Rockford.

          4. straffinrun

Didn’t he live in a trailer and drive a Firebird? Loved it.

          5. MikeS

Yep. And he must have averaged about 1.2 concussions per episode.

I’m probably going to watch the silent movie version of Dante’s Inferno tonight. Yes, I’m a 1900s-1930s history dork.

Although whoever put that god-awful new age bullshit soundtrack on it deserves some creative punishment in Hell. I plan on muting it and putting on some Bach organ music instead… Seems a bit more fitting.

      1. Tulip

She’s devout enough to wear a head scarf and burkini, but she’s appearing in a magazine issue that is all about exploiting the way women look for men’s sexual gratification. Makes sense.

Killing Eve is just an awful project, but the components are excellent. NewWife loves it, so I sit through it mostly for the euro experience, but the plot and characters are mostly ridiculous. I feel pretty much the same ’bout Game of Thrones: watch the pretty pictures with her ’cause it makes her happy.

Killing Eve is one of those shows that should be good, but it just isn’t.

Thanks: that’s what I was trying to say.

    2. LJW

Apparently I’m the only person who enjoys GOT. I agree the show has kind of fallen off the tracks in a hurry to finish, but overall I have enjoyed the series and the books.

      1. Threedoor

I’ve enjoyed it so far as well. Not as much as I enjoy other shows though. For example I’ve never liked cop shows and love Bosch.

        1. MikeS

Prime has been trying to get me to watch that. What’s the story? Is he a cop? Private investigator?

          1. Raven Nation

Cop. And it’s definitely a pro-cop show. But, for the most part it’s decent. Spends time on the politics of policing and how it affects decisions on the ground. Seasons 1, 2, and 4 were solid for me. I thought 3 was a bust. S5 was OK but a lot of it revolved around the righteousness of the WoD so that was kind of problematic.

          2. Plinker762

I can’t watch cop shows any more.

          3. Pan Zagloba

If you have Prime, watch Comrade Detective. It is really, really good.

          4. cyto

Bosch is really good. The novels and the series. The books have also been made into a few movies.

It isn’t high art, just good detective story pulp fiction.

It is almost a trope – hard-boiled detective is divorced and has run-ins with the boss, reporters, guys at work who are less competent. Big Bad Guy (serial killer, mob boss, etc.) ends up coming after detective, his daughter, his ex, his girlfriend, etc. Detective gets bad guy and saves the day… but generally making himself worse off in the process.

The series is probably the best of the bunch because the actor is so good at playing the character. But I’d start with the books, because they are always better because of the added detail and insight into character motivation. But it works in any order, books, movies, series….

I dislike cop shows. I make an exception for Bosch. It is just so well done that it’s quite enjoyable to watch.

          I prefer Makita

        3. Read some good stuff about Backstrom on pjmedia a few years ago, but I’ve never seen it on any streaming site and I don’t care enough to try ordering a hard copy.

However…for something really weird – if you’re import-capable (may have shown up on Netflix by now) – look up the Norwegian show “Hellfjord”.

I like watching the fan edits which follow one character or event. I have never actually watched a full episode on HBO

I enjoyed season 1 of Killing Eve. 2 eps into season 2 and I’m not impressed. It seems to be going the way of Orphan Black, a show with strong and complicated women that refuses to let a woman be the villain (or even responsible for her mistakes).

There’s a magic where someone can get others to project their notions and desires onto the first’s actual behavior and be embraced with little critique and nearly no cognitive dissonance. Trump has this in spades; Bernie only has a taste.

          1. Urthona

          3. CPRM

Never saw that, I’ll look for it if I remember coming off this no sleep bender. I liked that mostly Te Station Agent could have been done with any other actor, the main story arc (as I recall it, it’s been about 15 years since I saw it) didn’t hinge on him being a dwarf, it was ancillary I could imagine the film could have been made without that being an aspect without affecting much of the plot.

          4. CPRM

The same pretty much can be said about Pete Smalls is Dead.

          5. Rhywun

Ugh, one Manhattan ‘g’ too many.

          7. CPRM

I might go on a bit of rant here: I really love when movies don’t worry about characteristics the way they do now. Growing up two of my best friends were a *dot* indian and a *feather* indian. When we were young, the only thing that mattered was that we liked the same stuff. I never thought of them as anything other than my friends, but at some point they got ingrained with identity shit. And then our past history didn’t matter. As a budding film maker I wanted to make films where none of that shit mattered, cast the best available actor, but that got harder as the years went on. Surprisingly, the most recent film I saw that took this path was Goosebumps 2. One of the characters is black and it isn’t even mentioned, the part could have been cast with anyone. Ok, I’ve been up for 21 and 1/2 hrs and had a metric ton of beer…

I read all the books that are out but I doubt I will the last 2 should they ever be published. Although I may be tempted to see if it goes better because teh last few of seasons of the show were bad plot wise (casting acting and filming it is still fairly good)

  31. DenverJ

First! Had my second allergy attack in the last few weeks, yesterday. Never had one be before, well maybe I have a vague recollection from very early childhood. Felt it coming, swung into a Walgreens and bought a bottle of liquid benadryl. I was standing in line when I started to lose my breath, and said fuck it, I’m taking some now. Both the person checking out ahead of me and the cashier said things to the effect that they were wondering why I was waiting. My brain wasn’t working great, and the cashier had to open the bottle for me, and the customer in front of me poured a dose into the plastic cup for me. Helped almost immediately. Then the manager came back, he’d gone to fetch the pharmacist, who he had, indeed, fetched. Custom told pharmacist how much she’d given me, pharmacist said give him that much again. Rest of the day I was out of it, probably from the benadryl.
Guess on Monday, I need to make doctors appointment.

    1. straffinrun

Yeah, don’t skip that doctor appointment.

    2. CPRM

      Which Doctor? MUHAHA

    3. Sir Digby’s The Golden Age of Ballooning

Good lord! When I think of allergy attack, I think itchy eyes and skin. Maybe some sneezing. What was setting it off?

      1. DenverJ

I suspect the attack a few weeks ago was from a preservative on a frozen pizza? The one yesterday must have been triggered by the Aleve I took for my hurting knee, I hadn’t had anything else but a small glass of pop. But two attacks within a month, at age 49, without any attacks for at least 40 years (aforementioned possible memory from very young age), is weird.

        1. DenverJ

And, the bottle of aleve was half full, because over the years I’ve taken it, and never had any reaction.

        2. Sir Digby’s The Golden Age of Ballooning

A preservative, huh? Is that something you’ve been ‘sensitive’ to? I’m just curious–I don’t actually have any advice or special perspective.

I’m just used to dander and pollen…maybe a little dust, too. Of course, I say ‘used to’, when it should be ‘overly familiar with’.

          1. DenverJ

Naw that’s the thing; other than some hay fever and mild allergy to cats, this kind of thing has never happened to me before.

          2. Sir Digby’s The Golden Age of Ballooning

Someone here mentioned using Benadryl as a sleep agent some time back. I went out and got some…damn, I wished it worked for me, but, it was all a big nothing.

          3. Gustave Lytton

It’s the same ingredient used for Tylenol/Advil PM or Zequil.

          4. Sir Digby’s The Golden Age of Ballooning

Both of those have worked for me many times. Benadryl-never.

    4. Rhywun

Yikes. Glad I’ve so far managed to escape any of that hell.

      1. DenverJ

First one started with itchy balls, then itchy scalp, then hives the size of quarters, goose bumps, light headedness, flushed and swollen face and extremities. This second one had all of that except the itchy balls and hives, but substituted throat closing up. Really bizarre.

        1. Sir Digby’s The Golden Age of Ballooning

Sounds like after a night at Hilary’s…

Denver, what have you been getting up to???

        2. Rhywun

I have an early, vivid memory of my mom dragging me to a doctor’s appointment where they pressed a plate of needles into her back – and she was allergic to everything. I dunno what they did but in later years I don’t remember her being allergic to anything.
