  • A Noob Guide to Glibertarians.com

“Fuck off, Tulpa” will probably be the first reply you receive when you start posting here. It’s an in-joke, a sign of acceptance, a minor form of hazing. So chill the fuck out and be cool, ok?

Glibertarians.com, aka Glibs, is a private website owned and operated by The Powers That Be (TBTP) for the amusement of themselves and the greater Glib community. TPTB were kind enough to open this website for others to contribute material, and to participate in the comments. Just don’t be a dick, don’t throw around racist slurs, and don’t attack other people unless they are arguing in bad faith (rare here, but it happens). Attacking positions is always fair game. They will ban a troll faster than you can say “rumplestiltskin.”

All the material published here is submitted by members of the community; nobody gets paid for writing, drawing, animating, doing website design and administration, or anything else associated with this website; it is all a labor of love. Glibs accepts monetary contributions to pay the server bills, but such contributions are entirely voluntary and don’t get you any special privileges, tote bags or invitations to cocktail parties.

Glibs was born of a difference of opinion with the operators of Reason.com (TOS, formally “the other site”), the online presence of the Reason Foundation who also publish Reason magazine. Prior to the founding of Glibs, this community’s online home was the comments section of Reason where some of us had been since the very beginning of the Gillespie years, having followed him over from the seminal Suck.com website.

Tensions elevated during the Woodchipper Incident in 2015 when Reason found itself subpoenaed by the federal government because of comments left on their website.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, it was increasingly obvious that TOS was betraying core libertarian principles and blatantly succumbing to Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). Glibs is not a Pro-Trump site, but neither are we willing to buy into the hysteria and ally ourselves with progressives just because #orangemanbad. Most of us here do not like Trump, but we do realize that we would have been worse off with a Clinton presidency, if only for SCOTUS appointments.

The decisive incident came when the mother of one of TPTB was the victim of police brutality during the course of her official duties as a school nurse tending to an injured athlete during the course of a school sporting event. This incident was documented by the local press. TPTB whose mother was assaulted reported this to TOS, along with a link to the news report, and asked for some coverage. By any objective standard, this incident would have at least deserved mention in the AM Links or PM Links, the two regular daily weekday features at TOS. “Too local,” was their response.

Rather than continue to hang out at a place at which we, and more importantly our ideas, were increasingly unwelcome, TPTB decided to put up a website, and the rest is history. Here is the mission statement from our first day:

As to the tone of the enterprise – I would not seek to impose any rules on anyone else, but here are the things I’m going to strive for: no backbiting of H&R, Reason or the Reason Staff in editorial content. I don’t want this to be a bitchfest. I don’t want this to turn into something that only exists to react against something else. That way lies the shrill pettiness of blogs like “A Smarter Andrew Sullivan,” “Sully Watch” and (gods help us) “Sully Watch Watch.” Reactions to the writings of others are always fair game.

I believe that we have achieved that so far, and I am damn proud of us all for having done so. My initial fear was that we would have a good opening week or weeks, but then article submissions would drop off, then the morning and afternoon links would become intermittent and finally stop. But we persisted, and today, two and a half years after going live, we consistently have enough material to keep up a full publishing schedule with two links posts and at least two other posts every weekday. Yay, us.

So here you are in the worst little political chatroom on the interwebs, with a bunch of yokels; deplorables, even. Prickly, antisocial contrarians, the lot of us. And all our guns, pot, ass-sex, and Mexicans. It’s a nice place, very clean and family friendly! People are courteous about things that really matter. But learning what is humor and what isn’t can often be tricky. And we sometimes have legitimate disagreements about what is and isn’t acceptable.

Generally, if someone posts a comment with a position diametrically opposed to libertarian thought, i.e. advocating for higher taxes, more government, less freedom, less accountability, you can assume that person is being sarcastic or making a joke. Remember that a perfectly-executed parody is indistinguishable from the real thing. Don’t be that noob who doesn’t get the joke and tries to establish cred by flaming someone else. Because then you have to go and see Warty in his special basement “training” room.

In-jokes–yes, there are a ton of them. Too many for me to catalog here, but I encourage others to do so in the comments below. Which leads to our image as a cliquish, insular place. Yes, we are; but not deliberately so. Many of us have known each other online for decades. It is hard to break into a community like that; not because we aren’t open to outsiders, but it does take a while to establish cred here. And there may be some people who just plain ignore you.

What if you agree with libertarians on some things, but think we are whacked on other things? Debate us honestly, or decide to treasure those areas where your opinions align with ours. The greater liberty community is already too small and wracked by internal strife. For me, it was a long engagement with the Iron Laws which finally brought me around.

    Welcome to our house.

  • Things to Come – Week of October 14th

    For this week anyways.

You, our readers, contributors, lurkers and staff have made TPTB here at Glibs reflect in wonder at this little site of ours. We have been going for quite a while – frankly, longer and stronger than most expected here at Glibs HQ. You have our thanks and our gratitude.

OK, enough of the sappy sentiment – here is what is upcoming, and the comments are yours!

Monday – More of “Growing Up With Animal” and Trigger Hippie speaks of the punchfest between Hagler and Leonard.

Tuesday – Tonio has a bit of a guide – to explain us Glibs. A Florida Man post later on. I was afraid to look at it, so you will just have read it yourself. Prepare for further teeth gritting, reading the details that Ozymandias lays out before us.

Wednesday – DOOM…  I mean, Sugarfree. Then trshmnstr finishes us off. My brain hurts already.

    Thursday – SNP! Crossword!

Friday – The Glibbening continues. Cryptid(s) links, advice, mayhem.

Weekend – the continuing misadventures of OMWC, Spudalicious, Sir Digby, Mexican Sharpshooter, Not Adhan, et al.

Weekday Links from sloopy, Brett and subs as needed.

  • Things to Come – Week of October 7th.

I tried to get STEVE SMITH to fill in for me tonight…but he just promised HIM FILL SOMETHING IN! So, I sort of ran from having him substitute.

Here is the week to come:

Monday – Animal tells us of another Shitlord of Renown. Yusef writes from the road.

Tuesday – An RC Dean book review, Florida Man changes tack and moves to The Big Things. Later night, prepare to simmer at the further telling of the tale of the DoD Anthrax case.

Wednesday – Hat and Hair…’nuff said. A cross word for your evening.

Thursday – SNP! Mojeaux waltzes into a minefield…er, gives us Christianity 101. Football ranking savaging, late night.

Friday – We hear of the the making of a Libertarian. Cryptid(s) late on.

Weekend – Sir Digby, Mexican Sharpshooter, Not Adahn, OMWC, Spudalicious, et al keep us informed and entertained.

Weekday Links – Sloopy and Brett keep us in the know!

  • Coming Attractions: September 30th – October 6th, 2019

Monday: Animal continues his Profiles in Toxic Masculinity series and Tonio draws us a Portrait of a Grifter.

Tuesday: Pie tours us around Bucharest (he’ll make you yokels sophisticated Europeans yet,) Hyperbole has a crossword for us and Ozymandias presents Chapter 9 of his on-going series.

Wednesday: I terrorize the collective will with a new Hat and Hair, but the night slot is a new cartoon by CPRM.

Thursday: Baked Penquin gives us another glimpse into the mind of Secret Nazi President and Chafed has the night slot with the provocatively titled What to Expect When You Are Expecting Death.

Friday: The noon slot is just sitting there open right now, slutty and inviting. Slatternly, even. And the second half of the Tonio doubleheader, with Chapter 10 of The Glibening takes over the night.

Saturday and Sunday are smooth and blank for now, two luscious eggs of possibility…

  • Things to Come – Week of September 23rd

A week o’ fun and mischief!

Enough of my slacking… I am back to Sunday preview duty! Fortunately, you the Glibertariat, have provided us with enough material (in addition to TPTB contributions!) for another week. Here is what you can expect to see:

Monday – Animal discusses 1911’s. The shooty kind. Not cars or biplanes or such. Somewhere Robert Francis O’Rourke cringes. Later on we get an update from Yusef. From the road.

Tuesday – Leon informs us how to annoy people, via a winning argument. Or, by winning arguments, rather. Jarlflax goes through checks and balances, later on. And late, we get the next chapter in the Anthrax Saga of Ugh from Ozymandias.

Wednesday – Buckle up for The Hat and The Hair. Not that it will do you much good. Just lie back and take it. Later on Florida Man speaks of the little things.

Thursday – Zenu comin’! SNP’s insidious plans revealed again? Later on, Sensei continues teaching Japanese via Anime!

Friday – The Glibs staff reveals their reading for the month. Later on, we suspect a cryptid visit with links or advice or both.

Weekend: Mexican Sharpshooter! Not Adhan! OMWC! Spudalicious! Sir Digby! W00t! W00t!

Weekdays: Sloopy, Brett possible substitutes! Huzzah!

The comments are open. Do yer worst.

  • What’s Happening This Week?

Huh, seems the usual previewers all had lives or something today, so I’ll tell you what’s upcoming this week and then you can go about a Sunday Night Open Post!

Monday: Animal’s autobiography continues; Yusef has a dispatch.

Tuesday: Tonio stops by; The Hyperbole has a crossword for us; Ozymandias continues his excellent series on the DOD Anthrax Vaccine.

Wednesday:  Hat & Hair, should SugarFree bless us; Winston’s Mom has something to say in the evening.

Thursday: Secret Nazi President, courtesy BakedPenguin; Mojeaux has an evening rant; Don Escapes Texas with some more NCAA snark late night.

Friday: Raphael shares a travelogue and some insights from his experience being back Stateside; a cryptid (or more than one) stops by with advice/links, maybe both, Friday evening.

Saturday: MexicanSharpshooter drinks something on your behalf and Spud brings evening links.

Sunday: Not Adahn foretells the week.

Along the way, we’re sure to have links from Sloopy, Brett L, OMWC, and perhaps others as needed.

OK, then, on to the Open Post! Have a great week, Glibs!

  • Sunday Evening Coming Attractions

Alright so for those of you that decided today was not a day to watch football…I am not included in this. I’ll be quick.

    This weeks coming attractions!

Monday:  Morning Links, Midday by Animal, Afternoon Links, and maybe an evening post.  I dunno, we’re competing with Monday Night Football.

Tuesday:  Morning Links, Midday by Tonio, Afternoon Links

    Sugarfree. Now here’s a guy that…um…sorry….It’s been a while since I got a boner…

Wednesday:  Morning Links, Sugarfree’s family funhouse, Afternoon links, Evening crossword by Don Escaped Texas.

Thursday:  Now it gets murky.  I can guarantee morning and afternoon links.  You might get an SNP, or something.  You know Kindsbury.  If you didn’t play this “secret offense” bullshit and actually ran a few reps during preseason…your quarterback might not be sacked by his own right tackle?  Just throwing that out there. So SNP…I don’t control that.

Friday:  Even murkier.  You’ll get links.  You’ll get ZARDOZ, STEVE SMITH, or Winston’s Mom or something. Dangit!  Wide open!?  This is DETROIT,  you are getting owned by DETROIT.

    Oh nice.  Fitz’s streak:  continues!

  • Thing To Come – Week of September 2, 2019

Our fine readers have stepped up and given us enough material to stagger along another week. Search your soul and your conscience (I know, this I say to a bunch of Glibs?!) have you written up that post you meant to get to? Isn’t there something you’d like to share with us? Plz.

OK, my weekly plea is done – here is what will be gracing our site this week:

Monday – Animal discusses are really, really good gun (ZARDOZ is pleased, I bet). Tulip makes a very dangerous choice…. ’nuff said!

Tuesday – Not Adahn takes a crack at Whiskies of Nippon. whiz gives us some of the early bookie thoughts on 2020 POTUS FEST. Get your dull anger on, with Ozymandias and the DoD Anthrax saga late night.

Wednesday – Double barrel blast to your mental wellbeing – SugarFree opens the assault with the Hat & the Hair, and finishes us off with a Subaru Horror Theater. I…I don’t know if I can manage both.

Thursday – SNP! Baked Penguin willing. Later on, a warning re: Kaliforneeyah. By Yusef.

Friday – Another Glib Crossword! Don Escaped Texas takes a turn in the barrel. Cryptid o’ the week links later on.

Weekend – Mexican Sharpshooter, Spudalicious, OMWC, Not Adahn….what is not to like?

Weekday links….I dunno. Maybe sloopy keeps going. It has been cool having him back in the mornings. Brett will get to some afternoons, if he doesn’t fall down due to exhaustion. So expect a pinch hitter every once in a while.

  • Sunday Evening Coming Attractions.

    *clears throat*

I’m going to channel the movie announcer guy….

What do we have in store this week?

Tomorrow Animal has another lesson on Toxic Masculinity with a delightful crossword puzzle in the evening.

Tuesday Pie in the Sky presents a thought provoking piece on competition in the public sector, and another poll in the evening.

Wednesday, Sugarfree once again either gives us reason to consider suicide by cop or just risk being fired for drinking at work.  One or the other.

Thursday Mr. I.B. McGinty pens something I certainly hope you uncultured troglodytes actually read.  Seriously, its good..stay tuned.

Otherwise we have the usual links, by the Old Man, Brett, Banjos, Sloopy, ZARDOZ, STEVE SMITH, Spudalicious* and everyone else that may or may not get called in from the bullpen at the last minute.  That’s what makes this place so damn exciting…even we don’t always know what’s in store.

I don’t know about you guys, but for some reason skyline chilli is being made in my house.  Why?  I don’t know and I’m not stopping it.  Mostly because it at least looks better than the abomination they call pizza in South Korea.

    Enjoy what’s left of Sunday.

*as in the Spud Man,  The Spudster.  Spud-master Flex.  Spuddin around dropping Spud like hot fiery spud….
