Guatemala: Trump cuts aid and starves Guatemalans.
Quilinco sits deep in Guatemala’s western highlands, in an overwhelmingly agrarian region where poverty is high and child malnutrition rates hover around 70%. The region also boasts some of Guatemala’s highest migration rates to the United States. Local farmers say climate change is making it increasingly difficult to get by and is one of the factors pushing people to head north.

To get there, I rode a bus for five hours from Guatemala City and then got a ride in a pickup truck for another hour. The truck bounced up a dusty dirt road that wound up the mountains, through pine trees and a patchwork of little fields of corn and broccoli.
Virtually everyone in the town makes a living as a farmer, planting corn in the summer for subsistence. In winter, many also plant vegetables such as snow peas and potatoes for export to the United States.
Farmers and scientists say climate change has been making agriculture more difficult. This year, the problem has been drought. Rain patterns have been more unpredictable, and storms have been stronger. Two years ago, a rare spring hailstorm shredded García Ramos’ corn plants, and he lost the entire crop. I started eating Mexican food when I was around 3-4, made by real Mexicans in their street corner vending set ups. Been addicted to the stuff ever since.
This. I grew up in a farming beach town. There was one blonde girl in my whole elementary school. Place was 80-90 % mexican. I used to eat at my friend’s houses, where they would cook everything from scratch with the best of each ingredient. I’m kinda spoiled by it and a tad on the picky side now. I make my own, but I always add garlic. My mom was half Sicilian and she taught me that garlic goes in everything that’s not sweet. I also add chilis to Italian food, so there’s that.
I’ll add that there’s Mexicans and then there’s Mexicans. Think about your typical American. Some of them eat wonder bread doused in milk and slathered in mayo. Others eat like kings. In the big city, where I’m at now, there a wide range of quality to Mexican food. Much of it sucks. I’ve noticed that the hard core places like East L.A. tend to have lower quality food. You can find the good stuff, but not easily. Farming communities seem to have fresher and better food, for obvious reasons.

The lawyers for the intelligence official who filed a whistleblower complaint against President Trump that triggered a formal impeachment inquiry have expressed “serious concerns” for their client’s safety, according to reports.

In the 90s, I had a few friends who would routinely break into houses (mostly just looking for unlocked doors or windows rather than actually breaking anything) just to walk around. Sometimes they’d take stuff, but mostly they were doing it for the thrill, I guess. I was a delinquent, but that was one of the places I drew the line. It was a combination of having too strong a sense of shame to do something like that and having a very accurate conception of what my father would do to me when he found out. Even then I hated the idea of a scene, and I really valued being able to walk and have all of my teeth, so I never joined in.
