I watched a couple of episodes of Barney Miller a few weeks ago. Not bad. Made me nostalgic for better times. I also noticed how the old sitcoms really look like theater plays that have been filmed.
I’ll put in a plug for Naked City. NYC in the late ’50s – early ’60s; the cops are all Irish and quick with their batons, the old detective is wise and knows that patience and thoroughness crack cases, and the new detective is trying to learn the ropes. The stories were adapted from actual NYPD case files and it was, IIRC, the first TV show shot entirely on location in NYC. Good stuff.

That’s also when companies starting compensating people in other ways to avoid the taxes. Company cars. employer paid health insurance, stock options. life insurance, etc. All were schemes to avoid the tax man.
Generous expense accounts, subsidized/free cafeterias, company sponsored mortgage plans, company doctors/nurses/clinics, etc. All of those kept more money in the employees’ pockets without increasing their wages.
For perspective, $1.7 million in 1953 dollars is about $25 million in 2019 dollars in purchasing power. As a share of income, it is closer to $45million.

Undeniably economies of scale continue to bring us a larger quantity of cheaper stuff, despite all our best efforts politically to retard that process. But I think looking at it purely in those terms is, at least to a certain extent, whistling past the graveyard on the major shifts taking place politically, economically, and socially.
UCS may be an instructive example. it’s true that my life’s no better today than it was 10 years ago, and very probably won’t be 10 years hence, for reasons having little if anything to do with the general environment. But for the mass of men, accumulating wealth was certainly easier 20 years ago before we went full Japan on monetary policy, the economy shed millions of jobs, housing increased 400% in price, tuition increased 1000% in price, and business formation fell to the lowest level since the Great Depression. In the next 10 years as you start to age into the high-use part of the medical system you can expect to wait 2-3 times longer than you would have 10 years ago to see a physician for an average of 8 minutes — and that’s if we refrain from fucking things up any worse than they are right now. Survival rates for most terminal illnesses haven’t budged in 20 years. When you do wind up in the hospital, you can expect medical errors and MRSA at far higher rates. With the political movements now afoot, you may not be able to count on that accumulated wealth either.
It’s not as if it’s all doom and gloom per se, but there are trends now shaping up that are anything but an unvarnished good, and certainty about an ever-improving future is foolhardy under any circumstances, IMO.

Sure a more powerful computer in the hands of a software developer or graphic artist is a massive boost in productivity. The actual benefits of more powerful technology stopped really adding anything to the average persons life a long time ago. Sure you can play a new video game that has better graphics with that new hardware, but if neither the hardware or video game ever existed you would receive the exact same gain in happiness/quality of life playing the video games that existed at the turn of the century.

They got pretty chippy at the end of the game. One kid tomahawk chopped another kid and one kid blasted my son off the last face off with 1.8 seconds left (checking, interference, roughing, take your pick). Pretty poor sportsmanship.

The channel is never in the concrete beam bridge spans. Must have really been hitting the vodka….
Laws of physics (inertia) are a bitch. Slowing down or speeding up big heavy things, or even changing their course, is not a easy task.
My only real guess is that they had the thing on autopilot and didn’t make it to the bridge to take it off and steer in to the channel in time. It was going pretty fast on the way in, and I really doubt anyone steered for that bridge on purpose. Nobody is that dumb….

A friend of mine nearly saw a guy killed like that. He hired the guy to move his 600+ lb gun safe from a 2nd story room to a new house. He said they showed up and it was just a very large gentleman and his very skinny sidekick. Big guy was on the downstairs side, little guy was on the upstairs side pulling a rope. Big guy kinda missed a step halfway down and nearly surfed down underneath. Little guy got towed to the top of the stairs. If the guy underneath hadn’t caught himself, both of them probably would have wound up dead or horribly injured at the bottom.
One of my safes weighs one ton. When the mover guys arrived it was on a flat bed truck and they had a single dolly. There were four of them and they managed to get it off of the truck without getting killed but just barely. Rather than put it where I wanted I had them move it ten feet and against the wall in the garage.
Most people that get killed get killed doing something stupid.

The Chinese are not Nazi’s as they do not appear to have the level of demonization of some outsider group in the same way as the the Germans did in the Jews but they fit in perfectly with the Fascism of Mussolini or Franco.
It is funny for 70 years people have been proclaiming that Fascism was killed by the second world war, when I look around what I see is the majority of governments are in some way fascist and most moving ever more in that direction because the second world war has distorted our view of what Fascism is to the point where most cannot recognize it when they see it.

Basically, the Chinese communists claim that they’re in the very early stages of socialism, and that some measure of market economics and quasi-private ownership of the means of production is necessary to advance to the later stages, where they can eventually reach full communism. It remains to be seen what actually happens next.
As to the denunciation of outsiders, I don’t think the Uyghurs would agree with your take on it. But, a long-standing characteristic of the Chinese system has been the belief that it’s better than other forms of socialism, and they can transform people rather than having to kill them (not that they didn’t kill lots of people), hence converting Pu Yi to socialism vs. the Soviets executing all of the Romanovs. So the Uyghurs are sent to camps for reeduction, which unlike the Soviet gulags, they do eventually leave (at least, some of them).
Right that is the difference. The Uyghurs are not persecuted because they are a targeted scapegoat for all that ills the Chinese people and government, they are persecuted because they do not follow the party line. For those willing to be re-educated they are allowed to reenter Chinese society (albeit as a member of a lower social caste). Eventually the surviving Uyghurs would disappear and become Chinese and be fully welcomed within the society.
This sets them apart from Nazism but in every other respect they are identical to a Fascist state.

Appearance of impropriety?
The Sanders Institute, a think tank founded by the wife and son of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), is shutting down, The Associated Press reported Thursday.
The Vermont institute stopped accepting donations and will suspend all operations by the end of May “so there could not even be an appearance of impropriety,” Jane Sanders told AP.
Critics have said the think tank blurs lines between family, fundraising and campaigns.

Speaking to AP, Jane Sanders kept the door open for the institute to begin taking donations again once Bernie Sanders is no longer running for president.
“I think that was the most important thing to do — to not accept donations, because nobody should think that they’re giving money to an organization and that gains them access or favor to anybody else and anybody running for office,” she said in an interview this week.
“It just seemed the responsible thing to do,” Jane Sanders added.
If anybody should know about that, Jane Sanders might.
What ever could have happened to that investigation, I wonder.
I imagine propriety is a real concern for the Sanders. I doubt they’d get the kid gloves treatment from the IRS and FBI that the Clintons enjoyed.
Does anyone know how to block auto playing videos? I’m using adblock, chrome, ghostery, tampermonkey. I cannot get the damned things to stop. They are the ones that will pop out when you scroll past them. Driving me nuts.
I run NoScript and it blocks every one I’ve come across. Caveat, No Script can be a PITA because there are so damn many scripts running on most websites.
The only way I found was to manually block that shit using Stylish. PITA, though. So I’ve only done it for a few sites I visit regularly.
I have one on my home pc that blocks everything, but I forget the name. Keep your eyes peeled on the PM links comments and I will try to post the name of it then (unless someone does it here). Most websites become text only, and somewhat unformatted. Then you click something on a toolbar that shows you all the blocked stuff and you can pick and choose which ones you want to allow (always, once, or never) and the page will refresh. You kind of have to take an educated guess based on the names, but you will be amazed how many sites are going to 50 other places (no exaggeration). Amazon for example has their images on another site, so you might want to allow that one permanently, for example. YouTube stuff is always abbreviated ‘yt’ and you probably have to click about 3 or 4 of the blocked sites to get a video to play.
In the meantime, try an addon called RequestPolicy.
